... a new year, new work and new collaborations, as well as long-standing associations with the fabulous Celtic Connections Festival and the Glasgow International Comedy Festival. Our first main house show of the season will be a co-production with Ankur Productions, and Shabina Aslam’s directorial debut with the company, Mwana, the coming-of-age story of a young Zimbabwean man educated in Glasgow, exploring family, race, tradition and secrets. We follow this with the famous Belfast company Big Telly’s Melmoth the Wanderer, where comic surrealism meets shock horror in Nicola McCartney’s terrifying tale of temptation, torture and immortality; and we welcome back Stellar Quines later in the season with their spectacular co-production with Montreal-based Imago Theatre, Ana, which will take audiences on a journey of creativity and madness. Tron Theatre Company is delighted to be able to take to full production this season, one of the shortlisted finalists in our 2010 Open.Stage Playwriting competition, J.C. Marshall’s Plume, the beautifully written story of one man’s grief and anger following the death of his son in a terrorist attack on an aeroplane. We’re undertaking building work on what was originally the Tron Box Office this season, which has an impact on our Changing House programme as this space will become the temporary home to Tron Participation workshops. That said, we are pleased that Random Accomplice return to our studio space after the sell-out successes of Smalltown and Love Hurts last year, with Double Nugget, two hilarious, ingenious and incredible stories; and we’ve two sitespecific pieces in the Vic Bar – Grid Iron with their award-winning show Barflies and Alistair Rutherford’s new romantic comedy Passing Through. As ever, the Vic Bar is also home to a full programme of music, cabaret, life-drawing classes, performance poetry, and this season, Shakespeare. With the economic climate being as it is, we’re having to work all the harder to generate the income we need to keep the Tron in business, so we’re opening our doors in January for a church-fête-style fundraiser where we’ll have master-classes, tours, workshops and perhaps even the chance to sponge the Artistic Director (not my idea! What about the critics?). In the evening, we’ve gathered together a glittering array of Tron friends for a gala variety performance – good old-fashioned entertainment – and a guaranteed great night out for a bargain ticket price! We hope to see you down here, you’re always very welcome... Andy Arnold

TRON THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS

PLUME BY J.C. MARSHALL

DIRECTED BY ANDY ARNOLD

Glasgow, 2009. In a non-descript budget hotel room, a grieving father prepares to leap to his death as a high profile press event gets underway across the road. Twenty years before, his son William was killed in a terrorist attack on an aeroplane. Mr Peters has been picking up the pieces ever since, clinging on to the fragments of memories, the childhood imaginings that have become the only salve for his anger. With Jon Snow in the lobby, a former justice minister making last-minute changes to his speech, and an abandoned bird perch at the window, can bellboy Maller talk her old teacher down from the ledge; or will the mystery bird carry him off in an epic, unimaginable rescue? Plume was one of the final three plays shortlisted in the Tron Theatre’s Open.Stage Playwriting competition in 2010 and received a rehearsed reading in the Changing House in October of that year. West Yorkshire Playhouse subsequently commissioned J.C. Marshall to develop the play further and we acknowledge their role in the script development process.

CELEBRATING BIG TELLY’S 25TH YEAR AND FOLLOWING THE SMASH HIT PUCKOON... Five chancers present a terrifying tale of temptation, torture and a traveller desperate to find someone to take over his pact and release him from immortality. Who will take on his curse? His only surviving relative? A stranger in the depths of despair? An innocent child raised on a desert island with no knowledge of the world? Or the clowns compelled to play out this extraordinary tale of temptation, desire and cannibalism who may well have bitten off more than they can chew...

Mwanawashe is a salad boy : neither Western or African, he is a young Zimbabwean educated in Glasgow, conflicted between his love for the West and the traditional values and expectations of his heritage.

Comic surrealism meets shock horror in this series of ridiculous situations where innocent eccentrics struggle to survive. A random playground of the bizarre inspired by Saw, Psycho, Tim Burton and Fawlty Towers using projection, animation and squeaky toys, this is the sort of delirious chaos that sets Big Telly apart.

ANA BY CLARE DUFFY + PIERRE YVES LEMIEUX DIRECTED BY SERGE DENONCOURT

A bittersweet, emotional rollercoaster of a story about two disappointed women waiting at the candy floss machine on Irvine Moor. On the surface, there are the overlapping stories of the women who share a light-hearted secret and a love of psychics. Underneath lies a tale of deceit, loss and betrayal. Both of them are unaware how they’ll change each others’ lives forever.

SEVEN YEAR ITCH This true story of the brutal slaying of an office worker in America is interwoven with the delightfully flamboyant tale of two Glasgow co-workers, one of whom is obsessed with Dolly Parton. Seven Year Itch is for the daydreamer who looks at the stapler with murderous intent, for anyone who thinks about shredding their co-workers fingers and for those of you who sing out loud and proud at your desk.

‘...a tremendously vivid show… features an unobtrusively excellent script that turns on a sixpence between looming tragedy and brilliant comic one-liners… ’

★★★★ THE SCOTSMAN on Seven Year Itch (2009)

Born before history – before even the gods – in the house of stars, ANA is a strange and wondrous being. She is a delight and a terror. An abomination, a deity, a freak and the star of our carnival show. ANA is not bound by the same laws that govern the lives of us mere mortals. When this creature is caught in the mouth of inescapable decision, she deceives fate by splitting into a new self, multiplying at every crossroad, escaping her own terror to survive, to be free. But the selves she leaves behind still

8

exist and go on living to this day. Now, completely overcome and bewildered by her many incarnations, ANA must face her selves to reconcile her countless existences. This daringly bilingual play takes audiences on a journey of creativity and madness. Combining the rhythms of Scots-English with Canadian-French, ANA dissolves barriers between languages to explore a space that words alone cannot describe. www.stellarquines.com/ana www.imagotheatre.ca/ana

THE COMEDY PROJECT: SHAKESPEARE’S THE COMEDY OF ERRORS Boy meets girl. Boy marries girl. Boy’s identical twin brother that Boy did not know existed comes to town and things get messy. The Comedy of Errors starts here, then adds twin servants, a sister-in-law, a courtesan and a motley crew of townspeople all convinced that Boy has lost his marbles. Did we mention that the brothers are both named Antipholus? Stone Soup Shakespeare’s staged reading of this classic comedy starts a five-year mission to uncover just what ‘comedy’ really is.

PASSING THROUGH BY ALISTAIR RUTHERFORD Passing Through is set on a wet winter’s night. At the Dockers Social Club there’s been a terrible mistake. They booked ‘The Ace of Spades’ thinking it was a Motörhead tribute band but they got Tommy the Magician instead. Tommy made a sharp exit and is nursing a pint and a bruised ego in the pub down the road when Alice stomps in from the rain. She’s soaked, been stood up and that’s it, she’s had it forever with romance.

What neither of them know is that some magic might just be around the corner. Or is true love just another conjuring trick, a sleight of hand? THE CAPTAIN’S COLLECTION

Melting Pot Theatre Company’s dynamic production marks the centenary of Woodrow Wilson Guthrie (1912-1967) and features four multi-talented actor-musicians – playing guitars, fiddles, banjo, mandolin, dobro, autoharp, dulcimer, jaw harp and spoons – who bring to life both Guthrie’s own colourful, arduous story and the rich cast of characters who shared in it. Featuring around 30 classic Guthrie songs the show pays a fittingly heartfelt, uncontrived and freshly topical tribute to a towering folk icon.

Originally the brainchild of Blazin’ Fiddles’ Bruce MacGregor, Dogstar Theatre Company’s awardwinning music theatre production vibrantly dramatises the life and work of Captain Simon Fraser – fiddler, composer, publisher, dispossessed laird and Empire soldier. Directed by Alison Peebles, the cast comprises Matthew Zajac (winner of Best Actor at the 2009 Critics’ Awards for Theatre in Scotland) and Gaelic singer/actress Alyth McCormack, with live music from Jonny Hardie and Ingrid Henderson.

The Simon Bradley Trio brings together three award winning multi instrumentalists – Matheu Watson, Anna Wendy Stevenson and Simon Bradley – with a polished, lush and dynamic sound reminiscent of The Easy Club/Fine Friday/Django/Session A9 – ‘traditional swing’.

This season pupils have had the chance to watch video diaries of a day in the life of Andy Arnold, Artistic Director, read weekly blogs from the cast of Days of Wine and Roses and compare the rehearsal process with similar weekly blogs from Mister Merlin panto rehearsals. Pupils also had the chance to support their studies by getting behind-the-scenes on the new Liz Lochhead play Edwin Morgan’s Dreams and other nightmares, with detailed interviews with Liz Lochhead and set designer Kirsty McCabe available for download. Meanwhile, teachers could download workshop resources and a supporting film for Catherine Wheel’s Kes which we hosted in September. TRON THEATRE

SUN 15 JANUARY 12-4PM With a ‘church fête theme’, we were a Kirk once after all, will be opening our doors in January for a fundraising afternoon of workshops, tours, Tall and Tiny Tales and a whole host of stalls, activity and entertainment in every nook and cranny of the Tron.

TINY AND TALL TALES Every parent wants to give their little ones the best start possible. Participating in cultural activity can do exactly that. The Tron believe that our young theatre-goers are entitled to the same quality experience, whether workshop or performance, as our adult audience, after all they are the theatre audience of the future. PETER HOWSON

ROBERT McSPADYEN

Peter Howson studied at Glasgow School of Art between 1975 and 1981 alongside Ken Currie, Adrian Wisniewski and Steven Campbell, before returning to complete his Masters in 1979. In 1993 he was appointed the official war artist for Bosnia, where he produced some of his most shocking and controversial work detailing the atrocities, which were taking place at the time. Much of his work cast stereotypes on the lower social groups and was shown in major exhibitions at the Imperial War Museum, London and Bosnian Harvest at the Glasgow Print Studio.

Godard said all you need to make a film is a girl and a gun. This credo plays out obsessively through Robert McSpadyen’s vivid, seductive screenprints, which re-imagine Warhol’s Factory run by a co-op of Cahiers du Cinema, Kenneth Anger and Creem magazine. Robert is building a shrine to a deeply personal pantheon of the late 20th century’s sharpest icons, all abstracted into impossibly vivid Technicolor. The titles of the prints set up a pop culture feedback loop that tells you everything you need to know about the inspiration behind these glamorous, covetable images: dazzling reflections from a hall of mirrors where a superheated dialogue between rock‘n’roll and cinema echoes into infinity.

Works by these artists and many more are available at Glasgow Print Studio,Trongate 103, G1 5HD. 0141 552 0704 www.gpsart.co.uk An internationally acclaimed centre of excellence in fine art printmaking, Glasgow Print Studio is located in Glasgow’s new centre for the arts and creativity Trongate 103, the organisation is registered as a charity in Scotland, is foundation funded by Creative Scotland and supported by Glasgow City Council.

BSL interpreted performances allow people who are Deaf or for whom British Sign Language is their first or preferred language access to live performance. BSL interpreters provide a linguistic and artistic interpretation. The interpreter mostly stands to one side of the stage but sometimes interpreters are involved in the staging or the performance. We have no restricted view between our seats and the stage. All our seats are suitable to see the signer. BSL performances:

LIVING THEATRE WORKSHOPS

FACILITATED BY EMMA HAGEN SCOTTISH PSYCHODRAMA NETWORK

Living Theatre invites a public audience to engage with a live theatre event in which they are the creators of the action. Workshops have no rehearsed content, instead the starting point for a session will be a theme, based on a play in the Tron season. The workshop aims to shatter the divide between stage and audience, allowing a platform to explore ideas, feelings and inner responses to the drama. These workshops are not acting classes and no previous drama training is required. Workshop participants can choose to be actively involved, offer contributions from their seat or can be silent observers. As a pilot project this season, the Tron Theatre is offering Living Theatre workshops for two productions:
