New Latin Alley band takes the stage at Nov. 18 JiA party By Joel R. Goldenthal
The Jazz in AZ party on Sunday, Nov. 18, will feature Latin Alley, an exciting new combination of players featuring accomplished Valley musician Dan Pinson on sax and flute, whose dynamite CD, South of The Border (1997) showcased his impressive Latin chops; and Cuban-born EVENT pianist Marcos Crego, a relative newcomer to the Valley and the U.S., who is fresh from two 2011 Latin Grammy Award wins for his performance on Edwin Bonilla's CD, Homenaje a Los Rumberos. Maybe you heard Crego at the March JiA Party with Sancocho, or caught him sitting in at The Nash recently. Memorable!) Add rhythm masters Felix Sainz on bass, John Herrera on drums and Caleb Michel on percussion, and this musical match-up is destined to produce an exciting party with expressive, energetic and explosive music. Born in Phoenix, Pinson started his music career playing clarinet at the age of seven. Changing lives, cont’d from page 1 The two biggest factors in my jazz education have been private instruction with a great jazz teacher and playing every week in jam sessions at The Nash. You can only learn so much about jazz in the classroom; nothing compares to the challenge of playing on the fly and testing your skills with other musicians at a jam session. It makes you grow musically and lets you know what you need to work on to improve. The Nash is easily the most important venue for jazz education in Arizona, especially because it has no age restrictions – not to mention all of the great jazz musicians that I've already heard playing there. During three decades, Pinson studied with jazz and classical music educators including George Cables, Gary Foster, Eric Kloss, Joe Corral and Chuck Marohnic. Pinson's performance career has taken him to jazz clubs and festivals in the U.S., Mexico and Europe. He has been a roster artist with the Arizona Commission on the Arts since 1992 and has Marcos Crego provided workshops, master classes and lecture-demonstrations to more than 25,000 students in elementary and secondary schools, community colleges, universities, musicians' unions and community centers throughout Arizona and Mexico. Marcos Crego was born in Havana, Cuba, on July 12, 1978. He followed in the footsteps of his father, the great trumpet player Jose Miguel Crego (“El Greco”), and started studies at the Dan Pinson Manuel Saumell
Conservatory of Music in his native city when he was five years old. Crego was inspired to play with his classmates in a variety of musical groups. He then attended and graduated from Amadeo Roldán Music School. After graduation, his career took off with opportunities to perform in jazz festivals with many notable musicians. When he was 21, he produced his first album, Mi Musica, which launched his career as a musical producer. He also collaborated as a pianist and keyboard player on many albums, leading up to his recent Grammy wins. He currently teaches piano at the New School for the Arts and Academics in Tempe. Both Pinson and Crego have extensive Latin-jazz repertoires, so this party will be a showcase for some great charts. Divas in December at Kerr: One night only, Dec. 5 By Joel R. Goldenthal
This year, the Valley Jazz Divas concert will star vocalists Margo Reed, Sherry Roberson, Delphine Cortez and Renee Patrick. The Divas show is part of the Jazz in AZ-Kerr “Jazz in Concert” series made possible by generous support from the EVENT Jazzbird Foundation. The concert is at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, at the ASU Kerr Cultural Center in Scottsdale. Tickets are $24 for general admission, $29 for reserved seats and are available at the Kerr Box Office, 480-5962660 (save on fees), and online at www.asukerr.com. Jazz in AZ members may take advantage of a $4 per seat discount. Margo The Divas concert is like four sensational concerts for the price of one. Each of the singers has her own unique style -- from overall presentation to the way she phrases and feels time. It's a study in contrasts. Margo Reed is widely regarded as the icon of Valley female vocalists, having paved the way for the musical Reed family to relocate here in the mid-'70s from Kankakee, Illinois. Margo, a recipient of a Jazz in AZ Lifetime Achievement Award, is known for her “in-
the-pocket” swing, as well as “lovemushy” ballads, profound message songs and lowdown blues. Sherry Roberson came to the Valley in 1959 and has a long history of club and concert performances in the Valley, as well as stints in Istanbul and Bangkok. Sherry brings a blues orientation to the mix, along with a freight train-like drive and a propensity to “play with time,” moving phrases ahead or behind the beat, as the spirit moves her.

Delphine
Delphine Cortez hails from Indiana and performed at top clubs on Chicago's famous Rush Street before coming to the Valley in the mid-'80s to cover a gig for Margo. Delphine continued to get booked by top Valley restaurants and clubs, and never went back home! Her diverse repertoire and unique arrangements range from standards and bossa novas to jazz interpretations of “Moondance,” “The Look of Love,” “Put Your Records On” and other pop songs. Renee Patrick is from Philadelphia
and was born into a musical family. Her father, George “Pepi” Grant was a member of George Holmes' Ink Spots, and was inducted into the 1996 Hall of Fame of the United in Group Harmony Association as lead singer of the Castelles. Renee's mother, Teresa Botial, also was a professional singer who recorded duets with Terry Johnson of the Flamingos in Detroit's Motown Studios, alongside greats such as Smokey Robinson and Marvin Gaye. Renee's voice is honest and emotional, and her R&B roots bring an added dimension to her jazz vocals. Whether you are a jazz aficionado, familiar with the traditions of Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, Carmen McRae, Ella Renee Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Nancy Wilson and other jazz greats reflected by the four Arizona divas, or you just love tunes from The Great American Songbook by the likes of the Gershwins, Cole Porter and Duke Ellington, you will be thrilled by the repertoire and world-class delivery of Margo, Sherry, Delphine and Renee. Jazz fans can become aggravated when people around them are talking often during performances. I really want to ask them to stop chatting, or at least lower their voice levels, even when jazz is played in clubs or restaurants, which are more social settings than concert halls. Instead, I am appealing to “newbies” at jazz events to consider the live music event the same as attending a film or a play, and only talk during intermission or when the event has ended. The same goes for activating lighted cell phone screens at concerts, movies and live performances of any kind; that's inconsiderate, too. The Buzz: Mesa Arts Center was one of 788 not-for-profit national, regional, state, and local organizations nationwide to receive an NEA Art Works grant. MAC received a $58,000 grant to support the Jazz from A to Z program. Jazz from A to Z is in its third year as a collaborative program between Mesa Arts Center; Mesa Public Schools and Arizona State University, also the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and leader Wynton Marsalis. Its goal is to enrich the historical and cultural knowledge of Mesa students and teachers with a cross-curricular study of both jazz and American history that includes live
performances. The program is organized to reach more than 10,000 students and several hundred teachers, said Randall Vogel, MAC's director of theaters. NEA chairman Rocco Landesman stated, “The arts should be a part of everyday life. Whether it's seeing a performance, visiting a gallery, participating in an art class, or simply taking a walk around a neighborhood enhanced by public art, these grants are ensuring that, across the nation, the public is able to experience how art works.” “Hot Chocolate Midnights," a bossa nova with music and lyrics by longtime Jazz in AZ member Bill Hammers, has been accepted by a large music library for use in movies and TV. Bill, owner of Altissimo Recording Studio in Scottsdale, has a master's degree in jazz studies from ASU and a master's in arranging from Berklee College of Music. Musicians' News: The “new kid on the drums,” who performed recently at Sacred Grounds as part of Russell Schmidt's CD release event, is Tim Rachbach, who attended the Tucson Jazz Institute. He was part of the TJI Ellington band that competed in the 2012 Monterey NextGen Conglomerate Big Band

Division, along with Gibb Mandish on vibraphone. The band took first place in that division, earning a slot at the Monterey Jazz Festival in September. Based on his audition recordings, resume, and recommendation letters, Rachbach was one of three drummers selected to participate in the 2012 Dave Brubeck Summer Jazz Colony at the University of the Pacific. Rebecca de la Torre donated $500 to Jazz in AZ from her CD release party in September at the Rhythm Room. The vocalist-keyboardist said, “I want to help Jazz in AZ continue its education of young musicians in jazz, whether or not they go on to become professionals in jazz, pop music, film-score writing or another area of music.” She performs regularly at Warren's Jazz Bistro in Chandler.
