March 2013

Message from Jazz in AZ Board President, Steve Douglas WOW! I'm still recovering from the awesome community that showed its love, talent and generosity at the Dennis Rowland benefit held at Kazmierz on Feb. 28. There was an unbelievable lineup of the finest musicians from the Valley, wonderful donations for a silent auction, and powerful positive energy directed toward Dennis' amazing recovery. Special thanks to George Benson for his support, to Joel Robin Goldenthal and Greg Warner for their planning and logistical management, and to Kazimierz for hosting the event. Dennis was there, all smiles, proving he's a fighter like no other. I want to personally thank everyone who made the evening a success. Speaking of success, The Nash is coming up on almost a year since our soft opening concert gala at MIM. The Nash is now the face of Jazz in AZ, and it has become a beacon of our mission to expose jazz to all, to offer instruction and to continue the legacy of the genre. We anticipate well over 150 events a year just for starters; and by summer, we'll be in full swing with classes, workshops and "Camp Nash." Our second phase is starting now, and we're all excited at the prospects of really putting The Nash on the map as not just a great national jazz venue, but a world-class education center as well. The dream is becoming a reality. And speaking of legacies, I invite you to consider making The Nash part of your legacy with a gift of cash, stock, life insurance or other charitable bequest to Jazz in AZ. For jazz lovers, The Nashprovides an unparalleled opportunity to provide for the future of jazz, while potentially creating tax advantages for you. For more information, contact Joel Goldenthal, executive director, at 602-750-7045. Steve Douglas Jazz in AZ Board President

Corea won two Grammys, for Best Instrumental Composition for "Mozart Goes Dancing," a track from his Concord Jazz duo album with vibraphonist Gary Burton for Hot House, and Best Improvised Jazz Solo (title TRACL).Corea and Burton were both soloists on the latter track so Burton also won a Grammy.

"Chickfest" has come to be an annual event where celebrity pianist/vocalist Judy Roberts invites a bevvy of divas with whom she has worked over the years to join her for a 2-hour "all girls" vocal romp! The lineup will include vocalists Margo Reed, Nancy Gee, Sherry Roberson, Delphine Cortez, Renee Patrick, Alice Tatum, Carmela Ramirez, Vicki McDermitt, Jan Sandw ich, and Blaise Lantana. Trumpeter Arturo Sandoval's Concord Jazz issue "Dear Diz (Every Day I Think of You)" won for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album. The album acknowledges the influence that Dizzy Gillespie had on Sandoval. The co-producer was Gregg Field, Count Basie Orchestra drummer when Dennis Rowland was the band's vocalist. Best Instrumental Arrangement honors went to the Gil Evans Project's arrangement of "How About You" as part of Ryan Truesdell's project "Centennial: Newly Discovered Works of Gil Evans" (ArtistShare). THE NASH - Jazz Happens Here!

The Buzz: Drummer Al Greenw ell amazed and entertained the audience at Winfield's in January and March with his energy and inventive percussion work in the Arizona Jazz Big Band. He played drum rolls with one hand while performing a drum solo with the other. He also writes arrangements for the band, of which he is co-leader with trumpeter Tom Williams. Greenwell, 83, has led and performed in big bands for the past 50 years, including Woody Herman and locally with the Tommy Reed Orchestra.

The Nash is the performance and education center of Jazz in Arizona, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the cultural treasure of American music history, showcasing live performance and ensuring the future of the iconic art of jazz for generations to come. Check our website for updates and new listings of events at thenash.org. B.Y.O.B except First Fridays or as otherwise noted with event listings.

At the opposite end of the age spectrum, vocalists Olivia Freeman and Ira Hill were enthusiastically appreciated by the audience at the Jazz in AZ concert in January at ASU Kerr Cultural Center. The concert theme by Joe Bourne was "Gentlemen of Jazz," which honored Dennis Rowland, who continues to recover from a stroke suffered on Dec. 19. Both young singers have had instruction and coaching from Dennis Rowland. Ira, an ASU student, sang "I'll Remember April; Olivia, a high school junior, sang "It Don't Mean a Thing" and also harmonized with Bourne on another song. Charles Lew is took his legendary "Langston Speaks" poetry-music program on the road as a Black History Month performance for the officers of the Tucson Police Department and Border Patrol. Earlier in the month, he presented the program at South Mountain Community College. Carmen Fanzone, a 1970s Chicago Cubs player, stopped in at Remington's to play flugelhorn with Judy Roberts while he was in the area for Fantasy Baseball action. William " Doc" Jones, trumpeter and pianist, former owner of Doc's Place (formerly Johnny's Uptown), relocated last year to New Orleans where he started 504 Magazine. He and his vocalist daughter, Nayo, often perform around the Crescent City. Danny and Denny Gutenkauf, twin brothers who play bass and guitar and also sing, were among those performing at the Hodge event. They have lived in Arizona since 1978, performing for conventions and private parties throughout the Southwest, and were inducted into the Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005 with their original band, Rhythm's Children. Arizona Musicfest made a bold move in February with a booking of roots-bluesman Keb' Mo' to perform a sold-out concert with the 54-member Musicfest Orchestra, directed by Robert Moody. The 22-year-old festival began as a classical series, then jazz elements were added under the guidance of the late Buzz Katzen, a former Jazz in AZ board member.

Gaynel Hodge, co-writer of "Earth Angel" and co-founder of The Platters, celebrated his annual visit to Phoenix from The Netherlands by performing in January at the Rhythm Room. His trio was Felix Sainz on bass and Jason Johnson on drums, as well as drummer-vocalist Paul Stubblefield of Las Vegas (who said, "I drove five and a-half hours to be here - - that's more than I do even for a woman in my life"), supplemented by many local musicians. Hodge has been performing solo shows in Rotterdam and Schiedam, and a ''Remember When'' program of songs from the World War II era to the 1970s in neighborhood centers and nursing homes in Holland. He has five videos on Youtube.com (gaynel Hodge alle tonen). Four members of the Cactus Shadow s High School Jazz Ensemble earned first-chair honors in this year's Arizona All State Jazz Ensemble, led by Gary Wykoff, chorus and band teacher. Eight members of the ensemble auditioned and became part of the high-level ensemble: Garrett Becwar-tenor sax, Austin Boici -trumpet, Rhys Kelsotrombone, Chris Light-alto sax, Reid Riddiough-guitar, Stephen Steffen-bass, Trent Teixeira-trombone and Max

"Two recent developments highlight Nash's brilliant drumming and career. The first is the release of his fifth album as a leader, The Highest Mountain (Cellar Live), with pianist Renee Rosnes, saxophonist Jimmy Green, trumpeter Jeremy Pelt and bassist Peter Washington. The second is an Arizona jazz space that bears his name: The Nash, Phoenix's newest jazz club/cultural and educational center, is a place where jazz will be observed in master classes, performances and outreach events, all endorsed by Nash himself, a Phoenix native who maintains his ties with the local jazz community."

Wieden-drums. By having four members in a 17-member ensemble, nearly a quarter of the band is from Cactus Shadows, more than from any other school. Recently I participated in a program about jazz and blues for Vital Voices, an organization that brings together people to talk, listen, and connect through literature, language and performance in cultural spaces around the Valley. The event featured a student jazz trio from ASU, a vocal-guitar jazz duo and a poet. An audience of mixed ages and races participated in an open discussion led by music professor Richard Mook, sharing stories about how the music influenced them. I told about the abundance of local jazz and blues venues, and related my experiences as a music reviewer, seeing the separation and racial bias experienced by black musicians in Arizona in the 1960s and '70s. Vital Voices is a partnership between Arizona State University's Project Humanities and Performance in theBorderlands with Savvy Pen Consultations, a local arts and social-justice program developer. My live-jazz reviews for the AllAboutJazz.com website have logged more than 80,000 views, and my annual Paris Jazz Diary reports more than 53,000 views. During the 1980s and '90s, while employed fulltime at the Arizona Republic, I also wrote regularly for Jazz Times magazine, contributing musician profiles, festival and CD reviews. My articles are archived on the two websites.

Overheard: "Greg Fishman on clarinet is the best of small-R reeds, and Margo Reed is the best of the large-R's." P.J. Erickson at Remington's when Fishman performed there with Margo Reed and Judy Roberts. Final Bar: Gary Hughes, vocalist-pianist-kick-bass (called his left foot "Leroy"), Jan. 7 in Prescott; Clare Fischer, 83, pianist-composer-band leader, Jan. 26 in Los Angeles; Claude Nobs, 76, Montreux Jazz Festival, Jan. 10 in Switzerland; Patty Andrew s, lead singer in Andrews Sisters trio, 94, Jan. 30 in Los Angeles; Butch Morris, 65, cornetist, Jan. 29 in Brooklyn; Donald Byrd, 80, trumpeter, Feb. 4 in Delaware; Paul Tanner, 95, trombonist with the original Glenn Miller and co-developer of the theremin, Feb. 5 in Carlsbad, Calif.; Norman Magnan, 86, trombonist with Igor's Jazz Cowboys & other bands, Feb. 17 in Phoenix.
