Weekend jazz event May 17-19 to celebrate Illinois Jacquet, benefit The Nash

'Papa' John DeFrancesco began playing the Hammond B3 Organ in the Buffalo, New York area in 1959 after seeing Jimmy Smith live. In the late '70's, he put aside his successful performing career -playing with the likes of Jack McDuff, Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff, George Benson, and Houston Person -- to concentrate on raising his son, Joey DeFrancesco. 'Papa' John must have done something right, as son Joey started touring as a member of Miles Davis' band at the age of 17. With Joey grown and on his own, in the mid-'90's 'Papa' John resumed his own performance and recording career. His most recent album, A Philadelphia Story, released in 2011 on the Savant label, is "...smoking B-3 jazz with kick, swagger, and funky butt grooves. It marks the welcome return of a master jazzman," says AllMusic.com. See this formidable jazzman live and up close at Jazz in AZ Monthly Sunday Party @ The

The "2013 Desert Winds Jazz Weekend," benefiting the Illinois Jacquet Foundation and Jazz in Arizona/The Nash, takes place Friday, May 17 through Sunday, May 19 at The Nash, MIM and Talking Stick Resort. Throughout the music-filled weekend, attendees will not only mingle with jazz royalty, music lovers, jazz enthusiasts, performers and celebrities, but also help to further the philanthropic efforts of the Illinois Jacquet Foundation -serving as a testament to the lasting contributions of one of jazz music's most influential talents, the late jazz tenor saxophonist, Jean-Baptiste Illinois Jacquet (1922-2004). Co-founded in 2005 by Jacquet's daughter and Scottsdale resident, Dr. Pamela Jacquet Davis, the Illinois Jacquet Foundation provides positive motivational programs that inspire learning, leadership and personal growth. Through community-based involvement, events and outreach across the music education spectrum, the foundation is able to offer financial assistance, annual sponsorships and grants to jazz music students at some of the most prestigious institutions throughout the United States. Ultimately, the Foundation empowers those involved in music studies to make a positive impact on the future of the jazz music genre. The "2013 Desert Winds Jazz Weekend," begins Friday, May 17, at The Nash and closes with a jazz-inspired brunch on Sunday, May 19, at Talking Stick Resort. The premier gala event of the three-day affair, "Desert Winds, An Evening of Jazz," takes place at the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) on Saturday evening, May 18. The event will include the presentation of two very special awards, designed by Tiffany & Co., honoring three individuals whose efforts embody the joy, the promise and the pursuit of Illinois Jacquet's legacy, which continues to shine through their work in support of the greater jazz community. The honorees are Herb and Lorene Ely, Jazz Patrons of the Year; and Julius Tolentino, Jazz Educator of the Year.

events with the likes of Mike Kocour and Danilo PĂŠrez; and let's not forget the Grand Opening Concert in October with Houston Person, Russell Malone, Cedar Walton, Christian McBride and Lewis Nash -- we are about to open our Education Annex adjacent to The Nash and kick off an initial schedule of nine educational programs in June and July...PLUS the 2013 rendition of Catch a Rising Star!

Summer Education Programs The Nash will be offering educational workshops and seminars throughout the summer. These programs are designed to augment, rather than compete with or duplicate, other educational offerings. Students who participate in week-long summer camp programs will find one or even several of The Nash summer programs to be of interest, affordable, and compatible with their schedules. Adult students are welcome. All programs are being taught by top Valley jazz educators. Tuition for a typical four-session (2 hours each) workshop is $100, which is a fraction of what comparable hourly private instruction would cost. We encourage your donations to provide financial aid to potential students who may not be able to afford the classes, which can be made to Jazz in Arizona and restricted for scholarships at The Nash by calling 604-795-0464. The schedule of summer courses scheduled at The Nash thus far: Jazz Rhythm Workshop: How to Play Odd Time Signatures Eric Rasmussen - June 3, 10, 17 and 24, 6-8 pm The Rhythm Section: Support and Interaction Will Goble - June 4, 11, 18, and 25, 6-8 pm Brass Playing Boot Camp Ryan Haines - June 30, 3-5 pm Jazz Combo: Various Approaches to Improvisation Ted Sistrunk - July 7, 14, 21, and 28, 1-3 pm Latin Percussion Dom Moio - July 1, 8, 15, and 22, 6-8 pm Practice Concepts

'Catch a Rising Star' Series This summer's concert series features performances by young artists based in Arizona. Curated by The Nash, the series provides a platform for these emerging artists to gain prominence in the jazz community. The 2013 series features headliners of young artists ages 12-26. This year, the Catch a RisingStar program is very much an educational program as well as a performance series, as all Catch a RisingStars groups will be offered a free clinic by an experienced local jazz educator in advance of their performance at the Nash. Watch www.TheNash.org for the schedule of musicians and dates.

But wait, there's more! Jazz in AZ has partnered with the long-established big band program, City Jazz (now under the auspices of Phoenix Center for the Arts), and the band will be meeting at The Nash on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the summer beginning on May 28th. The band will be under the new direction of Phoenix trombonist/arranger/composer/educator Mark Witt. For more information on this program, visit http://phoenixcenterforthearts.org/classes/city-jazz/ and click on Schedule and Registration.

Also at The Nash this summer: Every Wednesday at 7:30 pm - The Superstitution Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Milas Yoes. This will be an open rehearsal for the band, welcoming to sit-ins and to arrangers/composers who want to hear their charts performed. Every Friday at 7:30 pm - Either a contemporary jazz ensemble or Catch a Rising Star Most Saturdays at 7:30 pm - Mainstream Jazz Sundays at 6 pm - Jam Sessions

President's Message by Steve Douglas

We've come a long way, baby!

Some advertising slogans stick in your head, and the one that immediately comes to mind is "You've come a long way, baby". Well, Jazz in AZ is not Virginia Slims, but you sure have to be impressed with what's happened over the last 2 years. When I first became involved on the board we had maybe 19 events a year -- 12 monthly parties at Kazimierz, six Kerr concerts and a Father's Day dance. A lot has changed since then; overwhelming and awesome to say the least. The monthly parties have now moved with great initial success to The Nash, the Kerr concerts continue with an upgraded sound system, Father's Day is on the calendar again with the Extreme Decibel Big Band and... drum roll....we had 18 events at The Nash in April! Can you believe that? What two years ago was a dream, a vision, an inspired hope for the rejuvenation of the legacy of jazz and the role Jazz in AZ would play, has come to fruition. Last week, there was an impromptu, last-minute luncheon at The Nash at the special request of Lewis Nash to show the center to his touring Monterey Jazz Festival sextet. Once again surrounded by some jazz luminaries -- Christian McBride, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Chris Potter, Lewis, Ambrose Akinmusire and Benny Green -- I had to pinch myself that we have accomplished so much in so little time. I heard Lewis say to Dee Dee, "I still don't believe it, and I don't know what to say." Well, I know what to say: Jazz is alive and well in Phoenix, make no mistake about that! The thought of some 200 events a year at The Nash is beyond my comprehension. From First Fridays to workshops, clinics, jam sessions, big band concerts -- and education programs coming into full swing this summer with seven four-hour workshops and two seminars already scheduled for June and July, to be taught by some of our finest Valley jazz educators. I'm really dumbfounded at the speed things have ramped up. My thanks to Jeff Libman for finding and scheduling some great music, and overseeing the development of our education programs; and, of course, to the tireless efforts of Lorene Ely, our board secretary, and Joel, our executive director. "(We have) come a long way, baby!"

War declared on jazz radio station!

That headline would shock many, but it was true last June after Boston's NPR radio station WGBH-FM ended a 27-year jazz show and decreased airtime for another longtime one, replaced by more news and public affairs programming, in order to compete with another area NPR radio station, WBUH FM. A "jazz funeral" outside the radio station, organized by Boston musician Ken Field, was reported by Nat Hentoff, jazz columnist/historian, in JAZZed magazine, a publication for jazz educators, musicians and fans. He wrote that Field launched the event "with a slow dirge-like performance of 'Just a Closer Walk with Thee' and ending with a rousing up-tempo finale . . . with a little hope for [these marching musicians'] work continuing somewhere, somehow, into the future." He added that there was "a lot of press, a lot of instruments, a lot of people. Passing drivers honked their support . . . for jazz, a uniquely American art form." Hentoff opined that this "jazz rebellion" might inspire jazz communities in other cities where public and other radio stations will have stopped or greatly reduced jazz programming, as has KJZZ FM here (removing the first weekday evening hour of jazz and totally eliminating the longtime Saturday night favorite, "Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz," for more news hours). As a result of the Boston funeral-rally, the executive director of JazzBoston organized a public meeting of musicians, broadcasters, educators and representatives of cultural organizations. Some wanted to start another public-radio station; others suggested streaming jazz and related talks to digital devices. The result was the Boston Jazz Radio Master Plan with long-range goals of bringing live jazz and other music into schools and supporting its teachers. What struck Hentoff was the contrast between jazz-community supporters with the continuing public lament that jazz is dying. The naysayers cite diminishing audience numbers and sales of recordings (contrary to results logged by Amazon and other websites) and fewer young musicians interested in jazz (contrary to rising numbers of jazz courses, students and bands throughout the nation). Hentoff then quoted the late saxophonist Sidney Bechet: "You can't keep this music down as long as people are able to hear it," and concluded that WGBH unintentionally proved just that. Hentoff recalled, "Whenever I was invited to talk about jazz and play recordings in schools, the kids, although the music was new to most of them, got excited. Some got up to dance. In one second-grade New York classroom, so did the teacher."

At outdoor events with live jazz, watch how young children react to the sounds. That is the future. My belief continues to be that jazz is not dying, but continues to need the visible and ongoing support of its fans to stay linked to contemporary society. Suggestion: Plan to forego TV programming one night a week, and go out to hear a live jazz performance. There are more than 50 jazz concerts in the month of May, and more than 54 venues to hear live jazz in the metro Phoenix area, plus another 18 elsewhere in Arizona.

The Buzz: Summer soon will be upon us, the season when some venues slow or stop having live jazz. Jazz in the Hills will change from weekly to one or two Fridays a month, and a few other venues will curtail bookings until mid-September. Jazz fans always could count on Remington's for five nights of high-level sounds, but that may not be the case this summer. Changes for June are being discussed that would shift jazz on the nights that Danny Long and Judy Roberts perform their exceptional sounds, moving them to two weeknights, and ending the Thursday musical magic created by Judy and Margo Reed that usually goes on hiatus in July and August. On the positive side, The Nash will continue its every-Friday events, Saturday mainstream jazz, Sunday jam sessions and Jazz in AZ monthly parties (Papa John DeFrancesco combo on May 19), and Sacred Grounds coffeehouse will continue as usual on Thursdays throughout the summer. Jazz at Lincoln Center announced its 2013 inductees into the Nesuhi Ertegun Jazz Hall of Fame as drummer Art Blakey, vibraphonist Lionel Hampton and trumpeter Clark Terry. Each gained the majority of the popular vote cast by jazz fans around the world between March 6 and March 31. The three will be inducted on June 4 in a ceremony at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola, at JALC's home, Frederick P. Rose Hall in Manhattan. As a longtime member of the international Jazz Journalists Association, I participated in voting for the 2013 awards, and was pleased to see that many of my choices won. Winners in the 17th annual voting were Wayne Shorter, Lifetime Achievement; Sonny Rollins, "Emeritus Jazz Artist/Beyond Voting"; Wadada Leo Smith, Musician of the Year and Trumpeter of the Year; Maria Schneider, Composer-Arranger of the Year; Small Ensemble of the Year, Wayne Shorter Quartet; Best Male Vocalist, Gregory Porter; Best Female Vocalist, Luciana Souza; Trombonist of the Year, Wycliffe Gordon; Multi-reeds Player of the Year and clarinetist of the year, Anat Cohen; Alto Saxophonist of the Year, Rudresh Mahanthappa; Tenor Saxophonist of the Year, Chris Potter; Baritone Saxophonist of the Year, Gary Smulyan; Soprano Saxophonist of the Year, Wayne Shorter; Flutist of the Year, Nicole Mitchell; Guitarist of the Year, Bill Frisell; Pianist of the Year, Vijay Iyer; Keyboards player of the Year, Dr. Lonnie Smith; Bassist of the Year, Christian McBride; Violinist/Violist/Cellist of the Year, Regina Carter; Percussionist of the Year, Bobby Sanabria; Mallets Instrumentalist of the Year, Stefon Harris; Traps Drummer of the Year, Billy Hart; Player of Instruments Rare in Jazz of the Year, Edmar Castaneda, harp; Aaron Diehl, pianist-composer (Wynton Marsalis bands), Up and Coming Musician of the Year; Large Ensemble of the Year, Ryan Truesdell's Gil Evans Project; Record of the year, Centennial: Newly Discovered Works of Gil Evans (ArtistShare); ECM, record label of the year. In addition, JJA this year honored Jeff Haskell, Tucson pianist-educator, as one of 26 Jazz Heroes. A previous Arizona Hero was Don Z. Miller, producer of the Paradise Valley Jazz Party and one of the nine founders of Jazz in AZ in 1977. Longtime jazz supporter Jo Wittens celebrated her 91st birthday in April at a brunch party hosted by Willi and Jack Ulman. After Margo Reed sang her special version of the birthday song, Jo declared, "It's not my birthday unless

Margo sings to me." Doc Severinsen, former "Tonight Show" bandleader who will be 86 in July, led his San Miguel Five in two hourlong concerts at the Musical Instrument Museum on May 2. The trumpeter, who moved to Mexico in 2006, impressed the audiences with his ability to hit and sustain notes in both the high and low registers, and deliver complex multiple 16th-note patterns. As expected, he wore flamboyantly colorful garb of orange shirt and purple leather pants with a strongly patterned sport coat (he said he still wants to add sequins to it). Guitarist Gil Gutierrez dazzled with quicksilver runs during the quintet's flawless performance of Latin sounds with a jazz flair, lush ballad and the gypsy-jazz swing of Django Reinhardt.

Musicians' News: Dennis Row land has been seen out and about, including at the Monterey Jazz Festival 55th Anniversary All-Stars concert at the Mesa Art Center in late April. Looking strong and dapper as he greeted friends and fans as he recovers from a stroke in December, he said he's scatting but still "working on the lyrics." Frank Darmiento's "Revelation" was performed by the Arizona Big Band last month at Winfield's, capably delivering its time changes from 3/4 to 4/4. The band, co-led by drummer Al Greenw ell and trumpeter Tom Williams, will return May 31 to the coffeehouse at First Baptist Church of Scottsdale. The venue has live jazz every Friday, including the Red Mountain Big Band, directed by David Bacon, as well as small combos. Pianist Joel Robin composed and recorded a solo-piano chart for his wife, singer Delphine Cortez, "Delphine's Bolero," that recently was aired on Blaise Lantana's nightly KJZZ jazz program.

Quotable: "There are wonderful things in real jazz, the talent for improvisation, the liveliness, the being at one with the audience." Henri Matisse, French artist.
