This classic American program kicks things off in high style with Bernstein’s Three Dance Episodes from the 1944 musical, On the Town, George Gershwin’s Piano Concerto performed by Mr. Lefèvre and concludes with the essential American symphony, Aaron Copland’s Symphony No. 3.

A love of trains and the romance of train travel inspired Dvorřˇák’s seventh symphony.

His recent performance of Prokofiev’s Spanish influenced Second Violin Concerto was hailed by The New York Times as “a workout that balanced thoughtfulness and visceral power.” A new work by TSO Composer-in-Residence Dan Coleman opens the program and the soaring crescendos of Brahms’ First Symphony bring the concert to a powerful close.

Kimberly Toscano, TSO principal timpanist, makes her solo debut performing William Kraft’s Timpani Concerto No. 1, casting a spotlight on an instrument of the orchestra most often seen from a great distance. “The piece explores the extent of the instrument,” explains Toscano. “It is a masterfully composed work and an extremely rewarding experience for performer and listener alike.”

George Hanson brings his tenure as Music Director and Conductor to a fitting and inspiring close with Gustav Mahler’s massive Symphony No. 3. By doing so, he continues his acclaimed conducting of Gustav Mahler’s work that has identified him as a “Mahler specialist” in Europe. The Symphony No. 3 may provide the finest illustration of Mahler’s musical philosophy that, “The symphony must be like the world. It must embrace everything.” Perfect music for a springtime evening or afternoon, it was composed in the summer on the shores of beautiful Lake Attersee in the mountains outside Salzburg with the sounds of nature, man and emotions. Kernis: Musica Celestis Copland: Appalachian Spring Saturday, October 18, 8:00 pm Sunday, October 19, 2:00 pm In her second season as TSO Concertmaster, Lauren Roth makes her solo debut performing the concerto Gian Carlo Menotti composed in 1952, one of three mid-twentieth century works on the program. Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring won a Pulitzer Prize in 1945 while Samuel Barber’s Souvenirs is a playful, waltz-like ballet suite with memorable melodies. The program also features Musica Celestis, one of the key orchestral works by another Pulitzer Prize-winning composer, Aaron Jay Kernis.

de Falla: El amor brujo Ballet Suite Brahms: Serenade No. 1 Saturday, January 10, 8:00 pm Sunday, January 11, 2:00 pm The program starts with an Italianate work of Mozart’s, the Symphony No. 32, so brief it has been performed as an overture, and follows with de Falla’s sumptuous, well known Andalusian suite, El amor brujo. Brahms’ Serenade No. 1 completes this joyful concert with its jubilant melodies of a young Johannes.
Embark on a musical journey starting in Italy with Rossini’s brilliant, humorous and energetic overture to The Barber of Seville. Then visit France with the romantic, beautiful story of Pelléas et Mélisande by Fauré before ending in the city of music – Vienna. Schubert’s Fifth Symphony is one of the most beautiful early romantic pieces, very often praised for its resemblance in character to the music of a W.A. Mozart.

George Hanson comes full circle with Schumann’s uplifting Symphony No. 2 from the first TSO program he conducted, February 2, 1995. Sean Chen, an American Pianists Association award winner, was also a prize winner at the 2013 Cliburn Competition, the first American to make the finals since 1997. He will make his TSO debut performing Mendelssohn’s Italianate, technically virtuosic First Piano Concerto with its rapturous themes.

George Hanson moved the performances to Catalina Foothills High School, explaining, “It is one of the best acoustical halls in the state of Arizona.” Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon performances began at Catalina Foothills in the 2003/04 season, the TSO’s Diamond Jubilee Season celebrating 75 years of great music.

EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT The TSO has long believed that great music is for everyone. To that end, TSO’s nationally recognized, award-winning Education & Community Engagement programs reach more than 75,000 children and adults annually. From early years through adulthood, the Tucson Symphony Orchestra educates and enlightens, encourages creativity and fosters musical talent. Adult programs include recitals and orchestra concerts in communities throughout southern Arizona. TSO’s education programs include the school-based KinderKonzerts, Music in the Schools, Young People’s Concerts, Making Music Mine, and programs for serious young musicians.
MASTER CLASS SERIES
Learn from TSO musicians and guest artists as they share their expertise and experience with advanced student musicians. Master classes are a special opportunity to see great musicians behind the scenes as teachers! These events are free and open to the public; no tickets or reservations are needed.
