by Patricia Myers UNESCO, in partnership with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, is organizing the second International Jazz Day on April 30 to raise awareness in the world about jazz's virtues as an educational tool, as a vehicle for peace, unity and dialogue, and for enhanced cooperation between peoples. The year 2013 marks the beginning of the International Decade for People of African Descent, consecrated to the theme, "Recognition, justice and development for people of African heritage" in honor of the origin of jazz roots. Istanbul, Turkey, will be the official host city for 2013, that country having a longtime tradition of jazz. Munir Ertegun, Turkish Republic's first ambassador to Washington in the 1930s, opened his embassy's parlors to African-American jazz musicians, who gathered there to play freely in a socio-historical context which was deeply divided by racial segregation at the time. Inspired by this legacy, the ambassador's sons, Ahmet and Nesuhi, later emigrated and established the United States' first jazz and gospel label in 1947, Atlantic Records, which was seminal in spreading the beauty of jazz music around the world. Jazz in AZ will celebrate this special observance at the monthly party on April 21 at The Nash, featuring Fred Forney-trumpet, Frank Smith-alto sax, Charles Lewis-piano, Will Goble-bass and Dowell Davisdrums performing tributes to jazz giants. In April 2012, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Herbie Hancock and the Monk Institute spearheaded and

Five outstanding musicians from our community will be featured in a tribute to a giant of jazz: Fred Forney-trumpet Frank Smith-alto sax Charles Lew is-piano Will Goble-bass Dow ell Davis-drums The show, hosted by KJZZ's Blaise Lantana, will be recorded live for broadcast on KJZZ FM, HD and the internet on Tuesday, April 30th at 8 pm to commemorate International Jazz Day. organized events that took place around the world. Jazz legends gathered together for key events at UNESCO's Headquarters in Paris, at the United Nations' Headquarters in New York, and at the emblematic Congo Square in New Orleans. From Algiers to Buenos Aires, from Kuala Lumpur to Warsaw, from LomĂŠ to Santo Domingo, more than 100 countries celebrated. Soon after the UNESCO General Conference in November 2011, April 30 was declared International Jazz Day. More information is at www.unesco.org/new/en/jazz-day#sthash.GqZRAtDo.dpuf

The Buzz: The Buzz: The Dennis Row land benefit at Kazimierz in March was a huge success in assisting with expenses related to his stroke; he has not yet returned to performing. Friends and fans began to line up outside at 6 p.m. When the doors opened a half-hour later, the rush for tables and bar seats looked like a Black Friday at Walmart. By 7:30, there was a long line waiting to get in after the fire-code capacity was reached. Dennis stood in the side room to speak with people, looking dapper as he leaned on a cane. His wife, Sydney, was smiling at all the loving attention given to Dennis. The evening hosted by Kaz owner Peter Kasperski included a silent auction organized by events coordinator Samantha Dickerson. A jazz octet of high school students called Vinyl Jazz has emerged on the local scene, playing in jam sessions and for paid bookings, including May 8 at Birt's Bistro in Surprise and May 19 at Elevate Coffee Company in Phoenix. The members are co-founders Joe Allie-guitar, Emily Clocksin-alto sax and Michael Gregoire-bass guitar-alto sax-tenor sax; also Scot Madison Quiggle-piano, Courtney Schradebass trombone, Jacob Smith-drums, Daniel Vogt-trumpet-bass guitar and Stephen White-trumpet. Six of those eight were selected by the director of the Glendale Community College band to perform in its combo jazz band or invitational jazz band. The "Chickfest" at the March 17 monthly Jazz in AZ party attracted a full house to hear 10 of the Valley's top female vocalists, who were imaginatively supported for two non-stop hours by "The Judy" (as Renee Patrick calls pianist Judy Roberts). Among the highlights were Alice Tatum crooning "Danny Boy" as a salute to St. Patrick's Day; Carmela Ramirez singing "Besame' Mucho" in Spanish; Blaise Lantana singing her original lyrics for "Blue Bossa"; Margo Reed's fervent delivery of "Don't Misunderstand"; Delphine Cortez telling how she sang "Light My Fire" for a half-hour while waiting for Roberts to come to a Chicago club to hear her; and Nancy Gee capping the afternoon concert with a dynamic version of "Am I Blue?" George Benson was a surprise guest at the Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra concert at the Mesa Arts Center last month, thanks to ever-enterprising Randy Vogel, MAC's assistant director for theaters and operations. The Valley resident stepped from the wings to scat the changes to "Blues in Hoss' Flat," the longtime Frank Foster hit by the Count Basie Orchestra. Two elements likely produced this cameo: Benson's upcoming Nat King Cole tribute album for Concord Records is with a 42piece orchestra that includes Marsalis; and Foster won a Grammy in 1988 for Benson's composition "Basie's Bag" as best instrumental jazz arrangement. Earlier in the day, 1,500 students were brought to the center to hear the orchestra, but minus Marsalis--who arrived later by car from Las Vegas, as usual eschewing domestic air travel from the band's previous booking. I reviewed the concert for

AllAboutJazz.com @http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=44199#.UVpeZFeQO_0 Francine Reed was in town from Atlanta for a week, and sat in with sister Margo at Remington's on Thursday, as did Renee Patrick, Larry Reed and Phil Hendricks.

Arizona Musicfest took a bold step during its 22nd annual series by booking roots-blues performer Keb' Mo' and his trio to perform with the 52-piece festival orchestra. I reviewed the concert for AllAboutJazz.com @ http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=44090#.UTd5oVdXLoM

The 36th Paradise Valley Jazz Party w as diverse, rew arding An A-team of 20 East and West Coast and Arizona musicians dissected and reinvented a multitude of jazz favorites, newly igniting them with swing riffs and bebop licks at the 36th annual Paradise Valley Jazz Party, March 23-24 at the Scottsdale Hilton Resort. The sounds ranged from intimate trios to exciting ensembles, organized in10 nearly non-stop jam session-style sets by producer Don Miller. The party also featured Cow Bop, a Western swing quintet, and the Arizona State University Jazz Band, directed by Michael Kocour, this year's guest of honor. The weekend's headliner trio featured Shelly Berg of Florida on piano, John Clayton of Los Angeles on bass and Akira Tana of San Francisco on drums. They and local rhythm players were variously joined by New York imports tenor saxophonist Houston Person on tenor sax, Warren Vache' on cornet and Wycliffe Gordon on trombone and vocals, as well as alto saxophonist-clarinetist Eric Schneider of Chicago, trombonist Harry Watters of Washington, DC (of the U.S. Army Band) and guitarist Bruce Forman from San Francisco (leader of the Western swing-style Cow Bop). They were complemented by nine Arizona musicians: guitarist Stan Sorenson; pianists Kocour, Beth Lederman and Nick Manson; bassists Ted Sistrunk, Chris Finet and Dwight Kilian; drummers Greg Warner and John Lewis, and Max Goldschmid of Tucson, 18, who was equally proficient on tenor sax, trumpet and trombone.

at The Nash

The weekend offered nearly 10 hours of first-class jazz for $100, compared to an average $50 admission for four recent 90-minute concerts by touring jazz aggregations at local arts centers, which factors out to $33 an hour. Another perq of the party is that audience members could chat with musicians between sets in the ballroom, green room or cafe. Each of my 36 years attending the Paradise Valley Jazz Party has been an unparalleled live-jazz experience.

"Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most" is on display through the end of May. This show features 11 local artists: Crystal Coughlin, Bill Manson,

Overheard: "Michael Reed has performed at Kazbar in the past with his sisters Margo and Francine. When you think about it, any family with that much musical talent would have to have a last name like Reed...or maybe Brass." Peter Kasperski, owner of Kazimierz and Cowboy Ciao.
