tewa banks

garden + galleries

The Tewa Banks project on Jopp Street is well under way with government funding confirmed for 15 Public Housing places, including 6 Senior Housing. The plans for seven house types are uploaded to qlcht. org.nz. Breen Homes are confirmed to start on site in January for the first 15 homes, including 10 rental properties for completion in Spring 2024, being 6 x 1-bed properties for Senior Housing. The expected final completion of the project is mid2026.

Locals have the rare (and limited) chance to go behind the gates and into the private gardens of the region’s finest properties. Gardens+ Galleries, a Plunket fundraiser, showcases an astonishing 26 + gardens and galleries through the weekend of February 9-11. Amongst the featured garden retreats are Golden Hills, Thirlby Domain, Birchwood, Springbrook Grove, and the Giverny sculpture garden. Let’s not mince words. The weekend is huge. The Wakatipu’s “garden estates” have become a genuine phenomenon. They are a unique combination of what nature specially delivered – added to by what humans have privately dreamed. Apart from the spectacular gardens, there are artist talks at galleries, a landscape design workshop by Paddy Baxter, various special art exhibitions, a look at Millbrook’s “industrial scale” vegetable patch, and of course, a grand opening night. In 2024 the Arrowtown Creative Arts Society (ACAS) has put its marketing and membership base behind Plunket, to substantially build on what had already been a fine event on the Plunket calendar. The tickets, whose profits go entirely to Plunket, are $65 for a one-day pass, and $100 for two days. Following purchase, you receive a full guide to the destinations you’ve accessed (For privacy reasons the full listing is not visible to the public) The organisers advise to book early because there are several numbers restrictions – not on the main gardens, but on some of the specialty talks and functions. Tickets from at Te Atamira website, www. teatamira.nz/events/gardens+galleries

showing favourites An exciting exhibition featuring a large number of New Zealand and overseas artists will open in the Lakes District Museum’s gallery on February 9th. ‘Showing Favourites’ is an exhibition made up of favourite artworks lent to the museum by friends and members of the museum society and is a part of the Arrowtown Creative Arts Society's 'Gardens and Galleries" series. “We are absolutely thrilled with the generosity of local people who were willing to lend their beautiful works. They were happy to be able to share these paintings with the wider public” said museum Director Jane Peasey. “It is rare to gather a collection of this variety and importance under one roof in the Whakatipu. There are over 40 artists represented including Ralph Hotere, Colin McCahon, Tony Fomison, Evelyn Page, Douglas Badcock, Grahame Sydney and Max Gimblett. They give a great glimpse into the history of New Zealand art.” The exhibition runs from February 9th to March 17 and the museum is open every day. museumqueenstown.com 8

THE GARDEN OPERA

“unmissable” “10 out of 10” 11 February

It keeps getting better - this year’s Garden Opera (Arrowtown’s fourth) is the grandest yet. It’s a new record. Seven stars are booked for the “never-miss” outdoors concert on Sunday February 11. They’ll perform a robust program of opera favourites and “big-voice” popular. The concert’s become such a big hit, because it weds a gorgeous location to a very particular way of handpicking talent. “We co-produce with Auckland Opera Studio, whose job is spotting the very best emerging new talent, then helping its development,” says Paul Rea, chair of Arrowtown Creative Arts Society (ACAS). “So, we see big names like Amelia Berry, and also preview the best new stars. Four of this year’s ‘coming names’ are Pacifica – special voices who have moved from harmonized church music into the “big-time” of Opera.” The concert, supported by Walker & Co Realty, is set in the Stalker family’s Springpointer Gardens, which look out to the magnificent Remarkables. Gates open at 5pm for a sixish concert start, with BYO picnics as simple or as lavish as you like. Or order delivered hampers from Arctic Kitchen. Admission $90 ($80 for ACAS members). Tickets from Unichem Arrowtown Pharmacy or electronically from www.acas.nz under “events” tab. 11 11
