open day

On Sunday the 29th of October the Arrowtown Volunteer Fire brigade officially welcomed in their new medical first response vehicle. Supporters were invited to the station to see the vehicle up close, witness the blessings, lead by kaumātua Darren Rewi and Pastor Carlton Johnstone. The brigade presented recognition gifts to their major sponsors and supporters. After light refreshment the doors were opened to the wider community and public, where people came from far and wide to see the new vehicle, including the brigades 3 other fire trucks. Mr Whippy was on hand, dishing out an astonishing 135 ice creams!

glorious choruses concert Stirring and well-known choral works, delightful Christmas carols and talented guest artists will come together in the Central Otago Regional Choir’s Glorious Choruses concert on November 24. The choir’s three young guests are sure to impress. Teddy Finney Waters, an 18-year-old classical singer from Dunedin is the current leader of the NZ Secondary Students’ Choir, has studied under Judy Bellingham for four years and plans to study Classical Voice and Law next year. His beautiful voice belies his youth. Boudewijn Keenan studies cello performance under Dr Heleen du Plessis at the University of Otago and was the 2023 winner of the Dunedin Concerto Competition. He regularly plays with the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra and Cellists of Otago and in this concert will play pieces by Rachmaninoff and Paganini. Honours student Cameron Monteath has won several prestigious awards for both piano and composition. He plays in the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra while also studying a BA in French and German. Cameron performed with the choir in 2022 and returns to accompany both Teddy and Cameron, along with a solo performance of El Puerto (The Gate) from Iberia by Isaac Albéniz. The choir’s programme includes beautiful arrangements of lesser known traditional carols, with conductor Richard Madden ramping up the energy and volume for Sir Edward Elgar’s Land of Hope and Glory, the dramatic and inspirational O Fortuna from Camina Burana, the beautiful but sad Lacrymosa from Mozart’s Requiem, Verdi’s Va, Pensiero (better known as the Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves from Nabucco) and finally, Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus from The Messiah. While this is often performed at Easter, it is equally appropriate at Christmas, and will leave audiences in ebullient mood. Come along for a wonderful concert of exciting music, Friday, 24 November at 7.30pm Athenaeum Hall. Tickets $30 (students free) available from choir members or Lakes District Museum, Arrowtown. Door sales from 7pm subject to availability.

arrowtown village association news The AVA’s year closed out in October with our Annual General Meeting held at the Community Rooms. This is an opportunity for us to reflect on the year, farewell committee members and welcome new ones. The AVA has sought to engage with the community in new ways, we attended the Arrowtown Farmers Market in December 2023, selling Arrowtown’s popular calendars, our Annual Survey was conducted for the second year in January, helping us to understand the priorities of our members 1. Urban Development, 2. Infrastructure Quality and 3. Heritage Preservation. We conducted online Zoom meetings with topics including the Tewa Banks Community Housing Project and the work to improve Lake Hayes water quality. An Arrowtown Podcast was also launched, talking to community members, event organisers, councilors and businesses, stay turned for more! We also continue regular communication here in The Loop and thanks to Alison Dench for managing our Facebook Page and newsletters. We held two large community meetings, first in March regarding the work to improve our natural environment and long term intentions, spearheaded by the Arrowtown Choppers and their successful Beech party events. In September we held a meeting and provided information on proposed urban intensification plans which would increase height limits outside the historic zone by up to 12 meters. We welcome new community members Mel Seyfort, Renne Haenga and Toni Clarke who join Nick Fifield (Chair), Dave Harding-Shaw (Treasurer), Graeme Morrison, Mark Hose, Nell Hunter, Nicolet Spice and Emma Wilson (Secretary). Special thanks to Ben Teele, stepping down after 7 years who was influential in contributing to wilding and predator control, as well as reforestation and Daniel Sim (Deputy Chair) after 4 years, for his contributions to environmental and urban planning discussions in particular. – Nick Fifield, Chairperson

arrowtown business news As longer and warmer summer days start to creep back, we’re excited to announce that the second stage of our bike racks into Arrowtown CBD will be installed in mid December outside Postmasters Kitchen + Bar and then another two bike racks outside the Gold Shop, replacing two car parks mid January. These will be beautiful planter box bike racks, custom made for Arrowtown, by Arrowtown Engineering and planted with white carpet roses to really brighten the main street. It was a great win last week for the No Leaf Trust to hear that the judge over-ruled the Environment Court appeal by Olive Leaf Centre Trust for their building in our historic zone, which APBA as s274 parties have been involved in for the last 7 years. We’ve also been busy in support of our business and residents of Arrowtown with council submissions which have included submitting against the PDP Urban Intensification Variation and feedback on the Social Housing Plan Change, ORC Transport Business Case, Solid Waste Bylaw, Speed Bylaw and the Blue-Green Network. Thanks to funding from Te Hau Toka we were able to purchase web arrowtown.com

a wheelchair & walker for day use in Arrowtown, hired for a koha/ donation. These are stored and booked through the Lakes District Museum. There are several events happening in Arrowtown throughout November & December, resulting in a few road closures or traffic management in place around Arrowtown, two of those being both the Queenstown Marathon next Saturday 18th with a Stop and Go on Malaghans road between 8-10am and the Long Table down Buckingham Street on Friday 1st December. Promotional wise we’ve got our brand new Arrowtown Guides hitting the streets later this month, which are distributed throughout NZ and we’ve reactivated both our “Love Local” and “Shop Local this Christmas” digital campaigns to support our business community during the next few months. Lastly a huge welcome back to Sawa and Kei who opened Cave (in the Old Chop Shop building) now for lunch as well as dinner.
