experience matariki arrowtown lights

Join us for the second annual Matariki Arrowtown Lights celebration in Kā-Muriwai Arrowtown on Friday July 14. This one-day event marks the changing of seasons and the start of the Māori new year, 'Ngā Mata o te Ariki Tāwhirimātea.' Local schools, including Arrowtown Primary and Pre-school as well as Wakatipu High will showcase the art of kapa haka, bringing their passion and talent to the stage as a fundraiser for Arrowtown Preschool. The historic buildings of Kā-Muriwai Arrowtown will be illuminated with beautiful projections illustrating the essence and story of Matariki.

This year we are excited to announce the addition of fire pits on Buckingham Street where people can gather, share stories, and enjoy delicious food from expanded kai/food stalls that will line either end of Buckingham Street. The fairies and fire dancers will also amaze and delight spectators once again.

We are thrilled to welcome back the popular Professor Brian Boyle, a renowned astrophysicist, who will share his profound knowledge about the astronomical and cultural significance of the Matariki star cluster. His captivating insights will leave you enlightened and inspired.

Arrowtown Promotion and Business Association Manager, Nicky Busst, in collaboration with the Arrowtown Charitable Trust, expresses their gratitude for the tremendous support received. Thanks to the APBA board, new sponsors Millbrook Resort and Ray White Arrowtown, and funding from Queenstown Lakes District Council, Central Lakes Trust, Community Trust South, New Zealand Community Trust, and Te Hau Toka Southern Well Being Trust, this event continues to thrive. Don't miss the opportunity to be part of this unforgettable celebration. Join us on July 14 for an enchanting evening filled with culture, heritage, and education.

olive leaf centre

From time-to-time AVA becomes involved in resource consent hearings. This is driven by the AVA being the guardian of the Arrowtown Community Visioning Report 2017 & 2022, where heritage and character are identified as key pillars for Arrowtown.

Since the formation of the Noleaf Group in 2017, the AVA have supported objections to a new modernistic “Olive Leaf” building being proposed to the east of St. Patrick’s Church on Hertford Street within the residential historic management zone. The building is intended to provide an extension to the Church’s facilities with a community space and accommodation. Noleaf and QLDC both claim that the proposal does not meet the primacy, spaciousness and simplicity requirements as noted in the Proposed District Plan and the Arrowtown Design Guidelines (2016).

A long-term involvement has been undertaken in the Environment Court following the appeal of the Olive Leaf Centre Trust’s proposal. Resource consent was first declined following a hearing before 2 commissioners in September 2020 but an appeal was lodged in 2021. With the latest hearing process recently completed, the Arrowtown community awaits the final judicial decision over the next few months.

Through public donations and community fundraising 2020 – 2022

Noleaf has raised $41,142 to cover Heritage and Planning Expert costs for both hearings. Todd Walker Law were pro bono for the first hearing and funded by a member of the community for the appeal hearing which has been greatly appreciated.

A dedicated group of locals wanted to restore the old ice rink in Bush Creek. Three years of planning, improving clearing the land, and building the rink has brought the winter magic back to the area. Playing outdoors is such an important part of our village life.

Arrowtown has long been well known for ice. The largest of the rinks in the area was the Nairn Street rink (now Wilcox Green), which ran from the 1950s through to 1983. According to the Lakes District Museum, hundreds of people would come to Arrowtown from all over Otago and Southland, especially on bus trips, to take part in the fun. Lots of memories were made here! Arrowtown had an ice hockey team called the 'Arrows' and our wee town even hosted the New Zealand Ice Skating Champs in 1966. The current volunteers have renamed their Sunday social ice hockey team the 'Arrows' as a tribute to the ice hockey pioneers. Eventually, a new town water supply sourced from a bore had less air in it which hampered the freezing process. Along with milder winters, this led to the rink being shifted to a colder site in Bush Creek where it ran until the early 1990s.

With permission from the land owner to use the shared space for the community, the Bush Creek Ice group set about getting a rink reestablished.

Various methods were tested, and after lots of trial and error and volunteer hours, there has been success this year with the help of an experienced ice maker.

The rink is free and accessible to all! The Bush Creek Ice group ask you respect the area, the environment, and use it during daylight hours unless you notify them via their Facebook page so they can maintain the surface.

Volunteers are always needed so if anyone is interested in helping or contributing you can contact the group via their facebook page: 'Bush Creek Ice'.

Give their page a follow and you'll be kept up to date with all of the icy goings-on in Bush Creek.
