autumn festival 2023

The 37th Arrowtown Autumn Festival was a huge success over Anzac weekend. The action-packed programme had something for everyone with 58 events over six days. Our beautiful town shone in all its glory with magnificent autumn colours and the weather gods on our side. The region attracts so many talented individuals and it was great to showcase some of these performers, artists and musicians at the festival. Day one started on a high with the Arrowtown

Primary Kapa Haka group and the Mini Belles stealing the show. The special ‘Unsung Hero Award’ was presented to Jean & Bob Britton for their significant contribution to the community. The local Quiz Night was a hit thanks to Mullet Man & Mim, Andy McRae’s prize wheel and the amazing line-up of prizes donated by local businesses. Our lead partner Mora Wines & Artisan Kitchen hosted two delicious culinary events with a surprise visit from guest speakers Nadia Lim & Carlos Bagrie. Market day was popular with record numbers of over 10,000. Three stages provided entertainment and there were 132 stalls showcasing the best of NZ arts, crafts and food. The Parade was full of colour and creativity with the best community float won by the Arrowtown Scouts. There was plenty on offer for tamariki including a captivating puppet show, kids art workshop, skate lessons, circus shows, a scarecrow trail, a duck race, dog shows, fun runs and more. The Highland Fling was a blast with the Highland Storm band, bagpipes, highland dancers, kilts and haggis pies. Ben Hurley, Mullet Man and local comedians were entertaining at our inaugural comedy night. And of course the Pie, Pint and Pinot did not disappoint, a fabulous afternoon of entertainment and a range of delicious pies, craft beer and wine.

A big thank you to the Autumn Festival Volunteer Committee, our volunteers & sponsors and the Arrowtown community for theirsupport. The festival is truly community spirit at its best! If you are interested in being involved in the organising committee please get in touch. See you at next year’s festival, 24-28 April 2024.

a busy autumn

What a fantastic Autumn season Arrowtown! It was magical to see locals and visitors soak up what's arguably our most famous time of year. The Autumn Festival clocked up its 37th year and what an amazing week it was. Over 50 events ran like clockwork under mostly blue skies. Well done and thank you to our festival organisers and volunteers.

Congratulations to Melissa White who is our newly elected councillor for the Arrowtown- Kawarau Ward. Mellissa replaces Neeta Shetty, joining Lisa Guy and Craig “Ferg’ Ferguson in making sure Arrowtown has a voice in the QLDC chambers.

Soon over 100 mature Pine and Douglas Fir will be removed from the Arrowtown Golf Course. Submissions were invited, with a mix of support and opposition being received regarding specific species and in particular the row of larch along Centennial Avenue. The council took on the feedback and the larch will be left for now as decisions on replacements are still ongoing.

April saw a number of successful autumn native planting days, notably over 150 volunteers planted 3000 trees in 2 hours up Sawpit Gully, as well as planting days at Arrow Junction (1500 trees) and Bush Creek (850 trees).

The AVA is hosting a guest Zoom on the 24th May where you can listen to Mike Hanff from Friends of Lake Hayes update on what progress has been made with water quality over the summer with Mana Tahuna’s work in the water catchment. Check out our Facebook page for details. Finally, if you haven’t already discovered it, Arrowtown now has its very own podcast. It’s hosted by AVA Chairperson Nick Fifield and features interviews with local personalities and identities. Make sure you check out “The Arrowtown Podcast’ on Spotify or other podcast platforms.

27 colourful years

This years Autumn Festival farewelled a special member of The Arrowtown Buckingham Belles –Carolyn Crum.

Carolyn has been the longest serving Belle since 1996, and this was her 27th Autumn Festival, still as vibrant, sassy and high kicking this year as she would have been back in her 20’s. With a farewell gathering of past and present Belles, crowds were entertained by all getting in to kick up there heels for Carolyn's last Can Can. Carolyn loves dancing. She comes from a very musical family, learning Highland Dancing and ballet as a little girl, at her primary school, St John’s Girls’ School in Invercargill. One of her other talents is singing, she has sung in choirs, taken part in theatre and musical theatre groups. As a Buckingham Belle, Carolyn has performed at countless events, both community events and special events. Some of her favourite highlights have been performing at the Arrowtown Gold 150th celebrations in 2012, getting to fly to Shanghai with the Queenstown and Southern Lakes Highland Pipe Band to attend the Shanghai Tourism Festival in 2018. As well as Performing with Celtic Sounds in Invercargill. Her favourite Belles events have always been the local community events here in Arrowtown. She recalls, with much love, the Community Concerts that were organised with local groups, the fun and laughter backstage. Working with the Fire Brigade to put on shows, swishing with the Miner’s Band, dancing for the Senior Citizens tea, collaborating with the Pipe Band, 'that’s been the best fun' Carolyn says.

Carolyn has enjoyed making lifelong friends with some amazing people along the way. She has been a wonderful support for the Belles group as a leader/teacher. So whilst she has decided to “hang up her skirt” and will be hugely missed, the current Belles hope that she will always be around to keep a keen eye on our Can Can, and will be their number one supporter. The Arrowtown Buckingham Belles are always looking for ladies!! Do you love to dance? Are you a team player? Do you enjoy dressing up and entertaining others? Are you 18 or over? Then please get in touch via our Facebook page or call 021 062 5747.
