Close friends and family of The Exponents were treated to a secret(not so secret) gig at the Arrowtown Bowling Club on Monday night. They have been staying in town over Easter rehearsing for there National Tour which started on Wednesday at Invercargill's beautiful Civic Theatre and the big finale is at the Auckland Town Hall on Friday 28 April. Celebrating 40 years of the classic album Prayers Be Answered, Dance Exponents are reforming for their first shows in 36 years, playing all their hits from all three albums including ‘Victoria’, ‘I’ll Say Goodbye’ ‘All I Can Do’ and more.

Contrasting songs in three languages and spanning three centuries feature in the Central Otago Regional Choir’s concert to be held in Arrowtown on Friday, May 12 at 7.30pm. Exquisite sacred songs from Ola Gjeilo and Morten Lauridsen open the programme, with conductor Richard Madden leading the choir sometimes à capella, at other times accompanied by Alison Frude on piano. Jaunty movie and show tunes arranged by Mark Hayes follow with the inspiring addition of two local musical legends, Lyall McGregor (bass) and Peter Doyle (drums). In the second half it’s back in time to the 19th century for richly harmonic 8-part unaccompanied madrigals Lay a Garland and Great God of Love. Again these are followed by a lighter selection from Lerner and Loewe and Henry Mancini, and Hayes works his magic on New York, New York and Summertime, with the rousing finale, Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend. Dunedin born-and-raised guest soprano Cathy Highton-Sim has extensive experience performing and teaching here and abroad. Showcasing her versatility, Cathy’s programme ranges from Mozart to Rodgers and Hart, and she’ll be accompanied by Otago final year music student and award winning composer, Cameron Monteath.

Rounding out the programme, Wanaka based chamber music group, Aspiring Quintet will play two movements of Schubert’s Piano Trout Quintet.

Don’t miss this concert which is sure to delight a wide range of music lovers.

Tickets $30(school students free) available from choir members, Life Pharmacy Wilkinsons, Queenstown; Unichem Summerfield’s Pharmacy, Frankton or Lakes District Museum, Arrowtown.

Arrowtown Autumn Festival

After a two-year hiatus, the Arrowtown Autumn Festival is back with a stellar line-up of 50+ food, wine, music, art, sporting and community events over six action-packed days (20-25 April).

The leaves are starting to turn and it’s time to celebrate our beautiful little town as it shines during the autumn months. Now in its 37th year, all the favourites are back on the programme – Mora Autumn Lunch; Pie, Pint & Pinot; ASB Market Day; Bayley’s Parade; Quiz night and the Bayley’s Autumn Art Exhibition.

New events to look out for are the comedy night with Ben Hurley, Mullet Man & local comedians and the Highland Fling featuring highland dancers and a Celtic fusion rock pipe band. Chinese and Māori communities play an important part in Arrowtown’s history and we have added a number of events to the programme to honour this, including Chinese musicians, dancers and storytelling.

The town will be buzzing on the Saturday with the flagship market day and parade, featuring local favourites the Buckingham Belles and Miners Band as well as other local performers. Entertainment starts at 10am over three stages, so bring your family and friends along for a great day out. Parking is limited so walk if you can or park in Johnsons Common.

The majority of events are free to attend and most of the ticketed events are close to selling out, there are still tickets available for the Fun Runs, Highland Fling and Comedy night. Help us spread the word to your customers and friends by sharing the programme.

A big thank you to the Arrowtown community for their ongoing support and in particular to all of the volunteers. We are still looking for a few extra helpers so please get in touch if you would like to be involved in the festival.

trail lovers can win an ebike

Queenstown Trails is launching a new look fundraising campaign today inviting locals – and visitors – to become official Trail Lovers. Replacing the organisation’s Friends of the Trust appeal, the new campaign aims to connect with, and garner support from, all trail users.

“Whether walkers, runners or bikers, we’re asking everyone that loves the trails to join us, and help support our mission to further grow and enhance our incredible trail network,” says Queenstown Trails CEO Mark ‘Willy’ Williams. “This is a great opportunity for the community to show the trails

some love. We have big plans and with every dollar donated going directly back into trail expansion and improvement, the more funds raised the more we can do.”

The backcountry Coronet Loop, a collaboration with QMBTC to develop Hot Rod and Upper Hot Rod and the revamp of Bush Creek are just a few recent Queenstown Trails projects.

Currently underway are the Arthurs Point to Arrowtown trail, Arthurs Point to Tucker Beach and Sunshine Bay to 7Mile. Plus plans for trail infrastructure, such as shelter, water stops and toilets, are also on the agenda.

To supercharge the appeal the good guys from ChargeAbout Queenstown have kindly gifted a Moustache Ebike valued at $6,495, so anyone who donates and becomes a Trail Lover during April automatically goes in the draw to win this fantastic ebike.

The Arrowtown Choppers would like to say a big THANK YOU to the community and sponsors for your valuable contribution to the April 2023 'Arrowtown Beech Party Planting Day'.

We planted 3000 Beech, Ribbonwood and Totara in just over 2 hours, with the help of 160+ volunteers. It was awesome to see so many happy faces, including children with their parents and grandparents creating a legacy for future generations of Arrowtowners.

In total we have now planted 11,000 trees around the Sawpit Gully track in the last two and a half years. This is a recurring event in the Arrowtown calendar, and we look forward to seeing you in October 2023.

Thank you all for helping, we really appreciate it.

We would also like to thank the Arrowtown Scout Group for planting 500 Olearia, Coprosma and Kowhai at Bush Creek in March. This adds to the 2000 plants already planted in the area, with more planting to come in Spring 2023.

If you are interested in helping with wilding pine control, planting days (including the preparation and maintenance of the sites) or future plant nursery planning, then contact us at: arrowtownchoppers@gmail.com

Business UPDATE

With most members trading as normal this month and Arrowtown coming into all its autumn glory, we are anticipating a strong trading month. We have our autumn photography competition finalists on display at the Lakes District Museum from Friday 21st April, in conjunction with the opening of the Arrowtown Autumn Festival.

Thank you to everyone who replied to our annual survey, we got some valuable feedback and this is currently being reviewed by the Board. This will feed into our key focus areas and budget as part of the APBA Annual Plan for 22/23 and be viewable online from May. Don’t forget you can have your say too with the consultation open for the QLDC draft annual plan and community grants. Submissions close on Wednesday 26th April.

We also have a by-election this month with voting papers coming out next week. Please take the time to get to know the prospective candidates and vote. AVA's Chair Nick Fifield has launched "Arrowtown Podcasts" which you can download from Spotify and listen to John Glover & Melissa White’s thoughts on why they wish to represent Arrowtown.

It has also been a sad month as we farewelled several Arrowtown businesses. Sawa and Kei closed Chop Shop, though we will see them return in Spring with a Japanese restaurant in the same space. After 13 years, Jane & Hal closed their doors on Provisions which reopened this week under new ownership. Also Hilary at Stitchwallah is closing her doors and moving down to Lumsden. We wish them all the very best on their next chapter.

I am sure I will see many of you at the Autumn festival events planned over the 5 days (20-25th). A shout out to Catherine and her team of volunteers that have done a remarkable job on the line up of events this year. Ka pai!
