GET A HAIRCUT AND HELP SAVE THE PLANET!

You may be surprised to learn that the salon industry sends more than 1,500 tons of recyclable aluminium back to landfill each year in Australia and New Zealand alone.

Unfortunately aluminium doesn’t degrade easily, it actually contaminates the soil for 500 years. Add to this the waste of plastics, colour tubes, cut hair and more, and you soon see that beauty at any price is no longer an option.

After joining Sustainable Salons, local salon D’OR is set to change all this.

D’OR now recycles up to 95% of its waste by using the comprehensive resource recovery program offered by Sustainable Salons.

music from mozart to madden

The Central Otago Regional Choir will perform “Magical Music from Mozart to Madden” at the Athenaeum Hall on Saturday 3 December, - a rare opportunity for the choir to not only sing several works written by the highly regarded New Zealand composer Richard Madden QSM, but to have that same humble but very gifted man conducting the performances. Richard’s music has often been composed for special occasions of a deeply personal nature, such as weddings for family or friends or for church services. The poignancy of his writing is immediately appealing.

His anthem How Beautiful Upon the Mountains was the one chosen for the memorial service for Sir Edmund Hillary in 2008, in the presence of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, with Richard’s son Nick Madden, a Lay Clerk in the choir of St George's Chapel Windsor singing the tenor solo. Nick, one of only four singers at the funeral service for Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh has introduced his father’s music to his fellow singers and the Queen’s Six have performed and recorded Set Me as a Seal. Both works will be included in these concerts. The choir enjoys providing opportunities for young artists to perform and this time is delighted to feature Sarah Hubbard (soprano), the only South Island finalist in the the Lexus Song Quest opera competition, previously won by Dame Kiri Te Kanawa. Need a dose of positivity in our troubled times? Revitalise with the MAGIC of the MUSIC in this concert series! You won’t be disappointed!

Tickets $30 from Life Pharmacy Wilkinsons, Queenstown; Unichem Summerfield's Pharmacy, Frankton or Lakes District Muesum.

arrowtown village association news

arrowtown's urban boundry

The AVA has long advocated for the protection our current urban boundary, this is the reflection of our community's desire to protect and preserve the unique heritage and character of our village. This is detailed in our original 2017 Shaping Our Future Community Visioning Report and its recent review in 2022. Nonetheless, there have been a number of previous and ongoing attempts to develop the rural land on the outskirts of Arrowtown, mainly on the western side of MacDonnell Road, effectively stretching the Urban Boundary the community has sought to protect. The AVA has supported moves to resist development by providing submissions and referencing relevant community documents.

Despite development applications for subdivisions being turned down by the QLDC, the Environment Court and in one instance the High Court, developers have gone on to make applications via the Proposed District Plan process to have the land rezoned. If this were to be approved, it would effectively open the door to subdivisions similar to those that have already been disallowed. This could set a precedent that would potentially allow further expansion of the current designated urban boundary, impacting the character of our village which many work hard to protect.

An Environment Court hearing was held in late September which the AVA made representations to and there is a further hearing starting on the 13th of December. A group of residents, led by the Hanan family are representing the community in Court in opposition to further development. menzshed busy building libraries

The Arrowtown Menzshed recently completed the making of six Lilliput Library boxes for the Library at Remarkables Park.

These will be placed outside the library and are currently being customised in colours and designs relevant to members of local ethnic groups. The idea is that each Lilliput library will contain books from six of the overseas communities that are prominent in the Queenstown area.

All materials for the project were donated by Mitre 10 and the first of the painting sessions was held last Saturday outside their Megastore.

Current projects that the Menzshed are involved in are basic furniture repairs for locals, plus projects that individual members initiate.

12 bells of christmas

The annual Christmas Show returns this year 11 December at Queenstown Event Centre, with another spectacular display of talent and entertainment thanks to Queenstown Lakes District Council.

When Granny shares the family tradition of collecting 12 bells for Christmas, the children have one mighty task ahead of them in this timeless story of the true meaning of Christmas; family.

Featuring some of the most promising bright young singing, acting and dancing stars from the Wakatipu area including our very own Charlie Pagan. This is Charlie's third Christmas Show, having played the Snow Angel and rocking out last year as a busker. In 2022's The Twelve Bells of Christmas, Charlie plays Rebel, a leather jacket wearing, accident prone kid looking for Granny and her twelve bells. "We love having Charlie in the show as he brings so much energy and musical talent" says the director, Lisa Clough. Tickets $10 adult and $5 kids, for more info www.christmasshow.co.nz

fair fun!

The Arrowtown School Fair was a huge success and signalled a welcome return of the usual community events. With pony rides, candy floss, bouncies, delicious food including Royalburn Station gourmet burgers, and La Rumbla paella, a haunted house, lots of baking and crafts made by the children there really was something for everyone.

Contact Clint Sanson on 021 444 799 or email clint@chopperfirewood.co.nz

“We were so lucky with the weather” said PTA Chair Euni Borrie, “and when the rain came we were all packed away.”

With donations still coming in the final tally isn’t certain, but the organisers say its looking close to $45,000 which is fantastic.

“A huge thank you to all the businesses, parents, and the community who contributed to the success, and especially our sponsor Bayleys, which ensured that everyone who came along had a great day.”

The next fair will be in two year time, as 2023 will see the return of the Hangi to raise funds for the school Kapa Haka.
