GET A HAIRCUT AND HELP SAVE THE PLANET!

You may be surprised to learn that the salon industry sends more than 1,500 tons of recyclable aluminium back to landfill each year in Australia and New Zealand alone.

Unfortunately aluminium doesn’t degrade easily, it actually contaminates the soil for 500 years. Add to this the waste of plastics, colour tubes, cut hair and more, and you soon see that beauty at any price is no longer an option. After joining Sustainable Salons, local salon D’OR is set to change all this.

D’OR now recycles up to 95% of its waste by using the comprehensive resource recovery program offered by Sustainable Salons.

beech success

On 2 October we completed the 4th edition of the 'Arrowtown Beech Party' Planting Day. Karl Walker would like to thank everyone who has provided support to these planting days and contributed to the great success. The attendance record showed we had close to 150 people who took part, with the AWESOME volunteers managing to get 2000 trees planted in under 2 hours. In total we have planted 8000 trees up on the Sawpit Gully track, with our aim to get this to 12,000 before the end of 2023.

how’s life? survey open now

Queenstown Lakes District Council’s (QLDC) annual Quality of Life Survey is open now and the Council wants to hear your take on life in the district.

Your response will help shape key strategies, policies and plans by providing insight about the current issues and challenges facing our communities. The survey helps QLDC and public service providers plan for a better tomorrow and ultimately improve the quality of life of our residents.

Participation in the online survey is easy and fully anonymous, taking around 15-20 minutes to complete.

Council still wants to hear from people who have participated in the survey previously, and questions have been streamlined this year so it is faster to complete. Past survey results have helped prioritise projects such as the Climate and Biodiversity Plan and the Queenstown Lakes Homes Strategy.

Last year’s survey found that overall quality of life was rated as extremely good (26%) or good (50%), while 18% said their quality of life was average and 6% poor and extremely poor. While the impacts of COVID-19 were still being felt across the district, the results showed respondents were re-adjusting to a new sense of normal.

Residents aged 18+ who live in the Queenstown Lakes District are encouraged to take part. All responses go in the draw to win one of four $250 prezzy cards along with a $50 spot prize drawn weekly. The survey is open until Sunday 6 November. To find out more and complete the survey head to https://letstalk.qldc.govt.nz/qol

arrowtown village association news new voices

With a newly elected Mayor, new Councillors, including 3 representing the new Arrowtown-Kawarau Ward, it’s clear much change is ahead for our district. Post-Covid new thinking and new voices need to be heard, to help steer our community and our precious village into the future. We look forward to hearing from our new ward Councillors at our AGM as well as an update from The Community Housing Trust on the commenced work at Jopp Street. Always seeking new members for our committee, we would love to have a broad range of voices and walks of life represented for the residents of Arrowtown. Our meetings are monthly on the fourth Thursday at 7.30 pm.

AVA have key community liaison with QLDC, ORC and APBA and give financial admin support to Arrowtown Wilding Group, Predator Free Arrowtown, Arrowtown Choppers and Arrowtown Community Response Group.

The recent review of the SoF Arrowtown Community Visioning Report 2017 is set to adopt a new vision of Arrowtown remaining a ‘living village where people from all walks of life interact to form a community that preserves and protects the heritage, character and environment of the area.’

If you care about issues such as the village boundary, affordable housing, clean air, energy efficient homes, wilding control, revegetation, please put your hand up and help us make a difference.

We express our thanks to Chairperson, Susan Rowley, who will be stepping down after 2 years as Chair and many more as a loyal committee member. Our thanks too, to those residents who gave valuable time reviewing our guiding SoF report over the past few months.

all the fun at the fair!

It’s been six years since Arrowtown School held a school fair, and the children are excited!

“The children are excited, and have already started making things to sell” says Arrowtown Principal Chris Bryant. “Its been a long time since we had a fair due to construction of the new buildings, and then COVID, so they are really looking forward to some fun.” Funds raised are going to be put towards upgrading some muddy playing fields, and also to improve the food tech and cooking facilities. This will allow for more students to get more time in the kitchen which is something they have been asking for.”

Stalls already confirmed include Mrs Fergs Gelato bike, Royalburn Station gourmet burgers, Francescas pizza, bouncy castles, facepainting, dunk the teacher and the much loved Playhouse build and auction.

Collection for the jumble sale has already started and the school is also on the lookout for pot plant containers, plants, coathangers, and shopping bags to use on the day.

“To make our fair successful, we need people to come along, and of course we always rely on the generosity of school families and the local business community to donate goodies for auctions and prizes. Bayleys have very generously come on board as our main sponsor which is a great start for the fundraising,” said PTA Chair, and one of the team organising the day Euni Borrie. “We would like to invite everyone to join us, have some delicious food, be entertained by the school bands, and make it a real community day out.”

Any items for donation be dropped off to the school, or email arrowtownpta@ arrowtown.school.nz if you would like to donate a prize, or sponsor a stall.

spring swing

On behalf of the Arrowtown Preschool we would like to say a huge thank you to you of our incredible sponsors and supporters for "The Bayleys Arrowtown Spring Swing Dance". What a night!

The event was a huge success and we were delighted with the big turn out, with over 140 people from our local community attending. Special thanks to Todd & Walker Law, Chard Farm and Amisfield for there support and to local Arrowtown businesses who supported our raffles.

The grand total from the event was a WHOOPING $18,086.29, we are over the moon. We could not have achieved this without the incredible community sponsorship and support, thank you!
