swingers club A one-woman comedy by Katie Boyle, sets up an old lady in the least likely environment. 87 year old Patricia Goldsack, known as Pat to her friends and lovers has toured New Zealand for the last six decades with her touring swingers club and brothel. Looking to make a dollar in her old age, and lots of new and naked friends, she explores how close two degrees is and whether we can make that separation smaller. The show features anecdotes from Pat's chequered past, audience interaction, and all kinds of tips and tricks, delivered with a sharp grandmotherly wit and accomplished improvisational skills. On Thursday 23 June, 8 - 9 pm at the Athenaeum Hall. Tickets $25 @ eventbrite.co.nz

matariki arrowtown lights Arrowtown’s historic buildings are about to be lit up as you have never seen before. The meaning of Matariki will be explored through illuminations and projections by the South Island Light Orchestra (SILO) and artistic creations from Arrowtown Primary School. The clear evening air will fill with the proud sound of kapa haka from local schools once the Matariki Arrowtown Lights free cultural event is officially opened at 3pm on Friday. There will also be kai from local food vendors, with proceeds going to the Arrowtown Preschool, holders of the original annual Matariki event. The wonders of the Matariki stars, astrophotography, and Otago’s dark night skies will be shared by one of the world’s pre-eminent astrophysicists, Professor Brian Boyle. Bring your own binoculars or camera and learn how to photograph the stars. A Māori film festival at Dorothy Browns, held over the three nights, showcases films ranging from new release - Whina (about trailblazing Māori leader Dame Whina Cooper) to old favourites like Whale Rider. With live music planned, as well as a More FM Market with local arts, craft and produce on the final day – spend New Zealand/ Aotearoa’s first Matariki public holiday in Kā Muriwai – Arrowtown. arrowtown village association news review planned for sof arrowtown community visioning report (2017)

AVA has entered a partnership with the Shaping our Future Board to review this report. If you are interested in being part of the initial panel meeting for 6 weeks beginning Wednesday 29 June 6-8pm please email chairperson@arrowtownvillage.nz A public forum will be held in August. cooper’s terrace – potential for restoration

Since the gold-rush years of the 1860’s, Arrowtown has quite rightly worn its heritage profile with pride, and the restored Chinese Village is now an admired cornerstone to that profile. Almost forgotten, the neglected remains of a European settlement that flourished beside the Arrow River at Cooper’s Terrace, a short 10 minutes’ walk from the Chinese Village, are gradually being uncovered. It appears that this intriguing site has a character all of its own, and human stories reflecting the challenges and tenacity of its inhabitants are starting to surface. Nine miners are already associated with the settlement. The remains of seven huts have been uncovered, and German miner Johnny A Miller built a striking castle-like entrance-way with a vertical rock wall to his enclosure that shows unusual flair.

Viewed both from the road to Macetown and the walking track, imagine the best of these ruins restored and standing proud. Walk through the trees by the river and find more hut ruins. And it was here all the time. Waiting to complete Arrowtown’s own goldmining story. To assist gauging community support for further restoration, ensure you are registered on our website as an AVA member to join a Zoom presentation with Jan Morrison, Project Manager, on Thursday 16 June at 7:30pm.

queens service medal for david clarke In 1990 a fresh face David Clarke became the Director of the Lakes District Museum. A few short weeks later David had the privilege of hosting the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh on the deck of the museum. ‘Pretty overwhelming for someone just starting out.’ He remembers the Queen opening her ever-present handbag and bringing out an ancient parker pen to sign the visitor’s book. As far as he could see she didn’t have a marmalade sandwich stowed away for ‘afterwards.’ Thirty two years later after a full and David Clarke meeting rewarding career at the museum, David has Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip on there visit to been awarded a Queen’s Service Medal the Lakes District Museum for services to Heritage Preservation. He on 10 February 1990 commented that it felt like two matching bookends and a great way to end his career. When asked what achievements he was most proud of, he spoke of the earthquake strengthening of the Museum Bank building. Other achievements included spearheading the restoration of the Arrowtown Miners Cottages, the purchase and protection of the Arrowtown Post Office and the Postmaster’s House, the restoration of Williams Cottage and work on the Chinese Settlement. He also, with the help of the Lion’s Club rescued Arrowtown most photographed building (the Police Office near the Chinese Village): the fire brigade were about to set fire to it as a training exercise. He has been involved in many other projects but they are too numerous to list. David is also involved on many community boards and was Arrowtown councillor for six years. When asked about retirement he is cagey, 20–25 APRIL 2017 “I’m too busy to retire.” your local event guide & directory

rugby update Despite a late start and covid disruptions early in the season, Arrowtown Rugby Club have made the most of the 2022 rugby season. In the junior space, the club has again attracted a large number of players and has entered teams in every age group of the Central Otago Junior Rugby competition. Club President Amy Wilson-White puts that down to the time and effort invested by volunteer coaches and team supporters. “It’s never an easy job but always a rewarding one and every year we are so pleased to see our amazing coaches coming back to support the sport and our club”, says Amy. The Arrowtown premier rugby team, known as The Bulls, have also made a great start to the season. With new coach Simon Harper on board, the team have shown great character in both their wins and losses this season and have a good chance of success in the upcoming finals rounds. The team have been delighted to welcome a number of new players and to have the contribution of stalwart player/ coach Aiden Winter recognised by his appointment as the Otago Country Coach for 2022. With culture held in high esteem at Arrowtown Rugby Club, this Saturday 11 June sees the return of both the annual Sponsors Day and Lip Sync night. “Sponsors Day gives us a chance to thank our business community – without whom we wouldn’t have a club”, says Amy. “Lip Sync night was hilarious last year! It brings together our junior and senior rugby clubs and our awesome netball teams and lots of laughs Contact Clint Sanson are had by all”. on 021 444 799 or email Arrowtown Bulls play Cromwell clint@chopperfirewood.co.nz Cavaliers at 2.30pm on 11 June at Jack Reid Park. arrowtown police station are open Police, together with community volunteers, gathered yesterday to officially celebrate the re-opening of the station. The station was temporarily closed in 2016 while Police worked through the results of a nationwide review of front counter safety. It will now once again be open to the public from Monday to Friday between 10am and 4pm. The station will be staffed by an enthusiastic team of trained volunteers and supported by the Queenstown Police Prevention team. “This is a really positive step as it will provide a centre of assistance for this community and offers us the chance as Police to continue the longstanding partnership we have had with our Arrowtown community volunteers,” says Otago Lakes Central Area Commander Inspector Paula Enoka. Arrowtown is a growing part of the Lakes District and prior to its temporary closure the station was seen as a key community hub for not only the locals but the thousands of tourists that visited each year. The volunteers have now been through a training programme which will allow them to support Police by providing general

advice to the public, and guiding them though issues they may have. Volunteers will advise people how to make a complaint that may require further investigation by police staff. They will also manage lost and found property. The Arrowtown community continues to receive a 24/7 policing service for incidents requiring Police attendance. Remember, if it is an emergency and happening now, call 111. If it is a non-emergency please call or report online via 105. "It is important that we acknowledge this would not have happened without the assistance and dedication of Bob Farrell, and the late Jim Ryan," says Inspector Enoka. “It is through the ongoing support of volunteers like Bob and Jim, that we are able to once again provide such a service to Arrowtown." 13

let’s eat! knowhelp yourlet’s local – JEAN & BOB BRITTON Tēnā koutou katoa. Greetings! My name is Cory Ratahi and I’m originally from the North Island’s East Coast. After high school in Gisborne, I had a brief stint in the RNZAF, before working in Casinos in NZ and AsiaPacific. After many years living a busy life, I settled in the sunny Bay of Plenty where I met my new wife Caroline. A yearning to be closer to my children, who live in Christchurch, was the catalyst for our move south. Having lived in Arrowtown previously in 2000, we decided to head back to a place I remembered fondly. Although this region does not have many Māori living here, Te Ao Māori (The Māori world) enjoys amazing support from the locals. This support encouraged me back to learning Te Reo (The Māori language) and together, we created a beginner Māori language class free to the public. I must acknowledge my employer, QLDC, for whom I work full time as a Data System Analyst, they have always supported me in my Te Reo journey. Thanks also to Jess and the team at the Frankton Library for giving the class a home. The foundations of this language class were laid thanks to an amazing group of Arrowtowners who also wanted to come along on this journey. From all walks of life, and nationalities, we have grown into a regional group who support each other in learning Te Reo Māori. Together we formed a Waiata (singing) group and we can be seen performing at events all over town. I love everything about Arrowtown, the quaint buildings on Buckingham Street, the vibrant colours of Autumn and swimming in the Arrow River. It is truly a magical place, not only because of its scenic beauty, but for the amazing locals who opened their hearts to us. nominate a local – email thelooparrowtown@gmail.com 15
