autumn festival cancelled The 2022 Akarua Arrowtown Autumn Festival is cancelled due to the ongoing threat of COVID and the risk and uncertainty it poses for the Arrowtown community. Autumn Festival spokesperson Carole Watts stated: ‘We are truly gutted by this decision and realise that many people will have already booked their travel and accommodation. We feel for our loyal sponsors, talented performers, contractors, stall holders, awesome volunteers and local businesses who were all looking forward to being a part of our festive 5-day event. However, the safety of our amazing community must come first and so now we will shift our focus to 2023 (20-25th April, lock it in) and ensure we put on a festival to make you all proud.’ ‘The committee wishes to thank everyone involved in supporting us and for their patience and understanding around this difficult decision.’ David Clarke, director of the Lakes District Museum is hoping that the Akarua Autumn Festival Art Exhibition may still go ahead. ‘It is a tough time for artists at the moment and our exhibition is an excellent platform for artist recognition and sales. The decision as to whether or not it will go ahead will depend on support from sponsors,’ he stated today. He hopes that there would still be some awards for winning artworks if the exhibition goes ahead. Artists will receive more information as soon as a decision has been made.

arrowtown village association news AVA survey

Thank you to the many people who have responded so far to our survey. The top three issues are currently sitting at Arrowtown Ward Representation, Heritage Preservation and Infrastructure. If you would like to contribute, the survey is open until Monday 21 February. Have your say! https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/arrowtown22 winter air pollution

Have you already taken some measures to help relieve the winter air pollution situation in Arrowtown? Maybe you have taken up a grant to upgrade your old burner or simply replaced it anyway; put in another form of heating, or insulated your home, or stored firewood well ahead. Whatever you have done AVA would like to hear your story to use as a promotion of what is possible. We need to work together to solve this problem. Please send your story to chairperson@ arrowtownvillage.nz snap send solve

Have you downloaded Snap Send Solve yet? Snap Send Solve has become an effective way for members of the public to alert their local council to community issues. Reports might include a fallen tree, damaged footpath, vandalism, an abandoned trolley, an illegally parked car, flooding or a pothole. All you have to do is upload a photo of the issue and the appropriate local authority is immediately alerted to the report. Feedback on this app has been positive, with reports that Council is very responsive. Infrastructure ranked highly in our

survey - perhaps you are aware of a problem around the community such as a footpath that requires maintenance? We encourage you to send in a snap to get these problems solved!

arrow sounds Like many events throughout New Zealand, when the government moved the Country into the red traffic light setting The Arrow Sounds committee were devastated. Shelley Rhodes from Arrow Sounds writes ‘We tried to see how we could make the Festival work for all venues, however with the number of restrictions and various hospitality rules and regulations it just became far too difficult to navigate. We have such fantastic talent here in Arrowtown and we 100% want to showcase it in the best way possible, so to offer the

festival at anything but it’s potential was just not an option. Our vision is to have Arrow Sounds as an annual event, to celebrate our brilliant musicians and to recognise the strong and committed groups and individuals coming through our schools. We want to support and fundraise towards the education and importance of music in our youth, and we will absolutely continue to work towards this. Keep updated with Arrow Sounds on Facebook or Watch this space in the Loop for Arrow Sounds new dates announcement soon. 9

let’s eat! knowhelp yourlet’s local If you have ever tasted the sticky buns, the Bombay bowl, the blueberry muffins or in fact any of the food at Provisions cafe, then in a way you know something of Becks O’Malley. She and her fellow chefs work their magic in the tiny Provision’s kitchen. Becks certainly knows how to cook. Becks, a native of Adelaide was first lured to Arrowtown by Jimmy, her now husband. She and Jimmy both worked at Millbrook, she as executive sous chef and he as an apprentice greenkeeper. Jimmy is now the Millbrook Golf Superintendent and Becks, looking for a slightly ‘less full on’ job when she began a family (Bridget and Ned), joined the team at Provisions on their first day of opening. Becks and Jimmy are community people. Jimmy initially played for the Arrowtown rugby team and has been club captain for many years. Becks has been on the Pre-school committee and has served on the Arrowtown School PTA for nearly a decade. She remembers the first week she joined was the week of the

school fair. She spent all day making candy floss! Since then she has been an integral part of the PTA team. Whenever food is to be cooked, served and sold, Becks is sure to be behind it. She also makes a mean cake and often burns the midnight hours whipping up an amazing confection for a special occasion. If Becks is not working, running her children to their many sports events or exercising (she goes twice a week to Fitness for Life) then she may be found volunteering at Baskets of Blessings. Baskets of Blessings is a voluntary organisation that donate food to families that for various reasons may need some support. To say that Becks has energy to burn is an understatement. Her kindness and generosity are legendary.
