thank you It has been a year with the odd challenge thrown in but we have made it to Christmas with another new year ahead. long lunch Another year, another Long Lunch. The event that so many locals and visitors look forward to every December went ahead on Friday 3 December. Once again our local restaurants took over the main street and served hundreds of diners at a long table running down the middle of Buckingham Street. Over 650 guests attended. The long lunch benefits the local hospitality businesses at a time when things are a bit lean, but it also benefits the community. Over $7000 was raised for the Arrowtown Volunteer Fire Station through a silent auction. Many thanks to the bidders and folks who donated prizes. A fabulous time was had by all, but you couldn't really say it went without a hitch! The food was to die for, the Chard Farm wine and Emerson's beer were the perfect accompaniment, it was great to catch up with friends for a preChristmas celebration – it's just that the weather wasn't playing nice. But both guests and restaurants rolled with the punches and didn't let a couple of downpours during the afternoon put a dampener on the event!

arrowtown village association news identifying issues in arrowtown

Since its founding in 1862, Arrowtown has always been self-contained. We have our own schools, churches, cemetery, pubs, shops, swimming pool, hall, sports teams, community organisations – and our own local government representation until 2022. Arrowtown is integral to the New Zealand brand. The town has responded to change, created opportunities and grown while preserving and cherishing its past. Enhancing our natural environment has been a priority and in 2020 we were named NZ’s most beautiful small town. Continuing growth has put more pressure than ever on our environment, housing, infrastructure and heritage – yet our ability to shape our own future has been diminished. Now we need to work out the best way for locals to voice key issues with our local councils, QLDC and the ORC. There are four main interest groups: Arrowtown Village Association (AVA), Arrowtown Business and Promotion Association, Arrowtown Planning Advisory Group and Shaping our Future. The AVA aims to be the glue between these groups. It seems that now is a good time to ask what role you want us to play, through a survey that will be circulated to AVA members and also available through our Facebook page and website. Among the issues we are considering: intensification of housing; extension of urban growth boundary; air pollution; electricity supply; Coronet Forest tracks; emergency response planning; Ladies Mile development; heritage preservation; reforestation; Shaping Our Future; wilding trees; council services; road safety; Arrow River flows. www.surveymonkey.com/r/arrowtown22 Taking a few minutes to help us out by having your say will be greatly appreciated. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas from the AVA! web arrowtownvillage.nz email chairperson@arrowtownvillage.nz FB @arrowtownvillage 4

santa's sack is back In 2013 when the town was still a town and not a yet to be envisioned city, a few local entertainers got together and put on an adult Christmas variety show in December at the Memorial Hall and called it “Santa’s Sack”. The idea was to create a comedy and song based variety show taking a look at the year passed and looking ahead to the coming years. The comedy dealt with issues such as traffic lights, roundabouts, housing shortages Pictured: Mike Legge & and 60 hour work weeks. A second Charlotte Graf production was to follow in the following year, but then things got “crazy”, tourism exploded, everyone was run flat off their feet during the silly season or they simply decided to withdraw and relax. Now we are facing the end of a very trying and uncertain year, and over a few wines one night Charlotte Graf, Margaret O’Hanlon and Mike Legge decided what this year really needed was a ‘good laugh!’ Santa’s Sack was reborn. Joining the three veterans will be naturally funny and talented woman extraordinaire, Rebeca Barnes and we will be introducing (as the Gay Nutcracker) Roland Mirabueno. The show will be pulling together some hysterical characters and equally inappropriate and appropriate songs. Santa’s Sack returns to the Blue Door this Saturday and Sunday (two shows each evening; Gift Boxes For All Occasions 5pm & 7:30pm). The production Here to help make your gifting includes some delicious nibbles, experience easier! spirited beverage and raucous HOLIDAY HOMES | ANNIVERSARY comedy pushing our current BIRTHDAY | WEDDING issues to their much needed limit CORPORATE EVENT of humour. present at all times; the Arrowtown Police Volunteer Group was forced to disband. Many locals have missed the reassuring presence of the police station. Longtime volunteer and coordinator, Bob Farrell says that the station was mainly accessed by people who had lost or found property, but often people came in wanting local information. However he sees a police presence in the growing town as vital. The late Jim Ryan and the late Les Rogerson put many volunteer hours into opening the previous station. Bob Farrell comments that they would be delighted to see the station manned again. He credits Otago Lakes Area

Commander Paula Enoka for getting the station up and running once more. Commander Enoka commented that the reopening was “a really positive step.” The station will also be supported by the Queenstown Prevention team and a part time community officer. The Police Station is located in Buckingham Street behind the Avenue cottages. The Police station needs a number of volunteers to enable it to be manned. While over twenty people have put their hands up, more are needed. Volunteers work half a day every second week. Volunteers will be vetted and well trained. Anyone who would like to volunteer can email bob.farrell@xtra.co.nz 11

let’s eat! knowhelp yourlet’s local Kathleen Brentwood has been many things to many people. She was a stunning Sally Bowles in Cabaret, (wearing fishnet stockings and a bowler hat), she played the unscrupulous Madame Thenardier in Les Miserables, was the lead singer for The Queenstown Jazz Orchestra, a member of the Queenstown Ukulele Orchestra and an actor in many of the Remarkable Theatre’s Pint Sized Plays, and these are only a small selection of her achievements. With this much on her C.V you would wonder when she sleeps. Kathleen though, will be primarily remembered for her gig as a teacher. She has taught in the primary sector for over forty years, the last twenty at Arrowtown Primary School. Despite being a busy classroom teacher, Kathleen managed to coordinate and direct many childrens’ choirs. She has also taught many children to play the guitar and two years ago directed a wonderful version of the Lion King. Her attention to detail is legendary, she even insisted that the students learn some Swahili in order to carry off the Lion King songs.

Recently Kathleen has been involved with Maori Language Studies-she often sings in the Waiata Tia ensemble. She has also been involved in teaching the UK-based programme called Charanga. This programme is designed to give children a broad musical education. Life is about to change for Kathleen, she is shifting to Christchurch to explore new horizons. She hopes to pursue her interest in musical education there. She will be very sad to leave The Wakatipu Basin but hopes that the many, many friends that she has made here will visit her in Christchurch. Kathleen’s children now live in Melbourne, so she hopes that she may have more time to visit them. Kathleen thanks the amazing Arrowtown community for their love and support over the years.
