gone to seed Gone to Seed is a heartwarming story of a group of ageing friends in a gardening club. Hilarity ensues as the group attempt to fundraise to pay rent to the spiteful Reverend landlord. Remarkable Theatre are proud to bring this funny and poignant story to Arrowtown, on 9–18 September. A stellar cast is directed by Lisa Clough, including three actors from Arrowtown, David Cantwell, Rachel Rose and Kathleen Brentwood. Keen vegetable gardener Nigel is played by David Cantwell. Asked about his own gardening experience, David says he spends a lot of time maintaining a ‘no maintenance' English garden, when not riding his bike by the Arrowtown river. The river walk is also a favourite pastime for Rachel Rose who portrays new club member Sandra. Sandra brings some great fundraising ideas for the gardening club to consider, many stemming from her previous role at ASB, where Rachel has also worked. Rachel finds Sandra easy to relate to as she is ‘fairly normal’ and both have experience getting used to life in new towns. Teacher Kathleen Brentwood brings retired high school principal Maureen to life. Although she doesn't have green fingers Kathleen was attracted to Gone to Seed as she loved the idea of mature actors portraying the story of adjusting to getting a bit older. Gone to Seed rehearsals are going well and a lot of laughter can be heard from the cast. They have a real sense of comradeship which means this ‘great bunch’ will delight in bringing the story of friendship to the stage while also having you cackling in your seats. Gone to Seed, Arrowtown Athenaeum Hall, 9–18 September. Tickets on sale now from Eventfinda

arrowtown village association news trails for everyone

We often wonder where all the visitors are when we see Arrowtown’s car parks full, but we realise our visitors must be enjoying the trails around Arrowtown, trails which cater to all age groups and abilities. Popular with both locals and visitors, we know the trails are very special and are an integral ingredient to Arrowtown being voted the most beautiful small town in New Zealand. For the walker there are easy strolls alongside the Arrow River or Bush Creek, which link to longer walks such as the popular Sawpit Gully track and other trails in the Mahu Whenua covenant including the Te Araroa trail. For bikers, Arrowtown is a good access point to the Queenstown trail, Bush Creek trail and Macetown, as well as a variety of downhill mountain bike tracks. For information about Arrowtown’s trails, pick up a map from Lakes District Museum. The “Things to do” tab at www.arrowtown. com is a valuable source of information

with descriptions of a selection of the more popular walking trails, as well as information for bikers. Information about the Queenstown trail can be found at www. queenstowntrail.co.nz and QR codes can be scanned along the route. Many of the trails are dual purpose which can lead to some conflict between walkers and bikers, so remember you all have a right to be on the trails and be mindful of other users, and don’t forget to keep your dogs under control. More trails are planned for Mahu Whenua and the Coronet Forest site. As a stakeholder, AVA is in consultation with Mahu Whenua, QLDC and QTT, so if you have any ideas or suggestions on how to improve the trails experience we would love to hear from you at chairperson@arrowtownvillage.nz

arrowtown business news Many locals aren’t sure what the Arrowtown Promotion & Business Association (APBA) is, so here’s an overview of your local business association. It’s the organization some locals don’t see but it helps as an economic driver as well as an advocate for the heritage and environment of the town. The APBA works for the businesses, promoting the town and lobbying for solutions to parking, traffic, rubbish, in fact anything to do with the CBD, even workforce issues. The APBA is over 30 years old, creating the “Where History Meets Nature” brand almost 7 years ago which reflects the town’s gold mining past and the beautiful environment around the town, working closely with Mahu Whenua and Tohu Whenua. We are also responsible for the official Arrowtown guide you will see on our main street, which we also distribute around the South Island on your behalf. You may be contacted shortly should you wish to be included for next year (Dec 21 – Dec 22). We also produce the annual Arrowtown calendar, using winners of previous photo competitions. These calendars are available to anyone in NZ to purchase. The APBA is different to both the web arrowtown.com 10

Arrowtown Village Association (AVA) and the Akarua Arrowtown Autumn Festival in that it purely represents businesses. However, it works closely with these community groups as it aims for sustainable growth opportunities, focusing on promotion through our website, guide, social media, advertising and digital campaigns. We support predator control, native planting, wilding pine eradication, street planting boxes and the historical lighting project and we won the 2020 Most Beautiful Small Town award. The APBA also sponsors and drives events into Arrowtown, such as the town’s Long Lunch, Arrow Sounds Music Festival, Autumn Festival, Spring Arts Festival, The Motatapu Race and many more. The APBA is mainly funded by a portion of the QLDC commercial rates, representing retail, activity, accommodation, professional service industry and hospitality. winter exhibition The gallery space at the Lakes District Museum has hosted a succession of amazing exhibitions over the past year and the current Winter Exhibition is no exception. There has been huge interest in works from local artists recently from visitors and locals alike. Featuring recent works from over 20 local artists, the Winter Exhibition is definitely worth visiting. Featuring watercolour paintings, oil paintings, ceramics, cast bronze sculptures, mixed media works, and photography, this is an eclectic collection of work gathered from the remarkable talent we have in our district. There is much to see including a beautiful carved rimu Kingfisher by Luke Anthony, Dougal MacPherson’s delightful depictions of kids enjoying the play house at the Fork & Tap, and several of David John’s stunning landscape series. In other news at the museum, the earthquake strengthening work is progressing well. Under the huge tent that shrouds the building, the roof has been replaced and the reinstatement of the chimneys is under way. The museum is open every day from 10 am until 4 pm. 13
