beeswax wraps Patrick Edwards is a 12-year-old student at Arrowtown Primary School, he is the founder and owner of Apis Beeswax Wraps. Patrick’s story started with a desire to reduce the use of plastics in his home. He came up with the idea of beeswax wraps to lower the use of plastic wrap for food. He experimented and found a method that suited his needs. His handmade wraps are reusable, sustainable and offer a natural alternative to plastic, made by infusing cotton with food-grade beeswax and coconut oil. They allow food to stay fresh for longer, reduce food wastage and reduce plastic pollution. Just the heat of your hand is needed to mould the wrap around sandwiches, fruit, cheese or slices. Patrick is operating his small business from home and has created a website for customers to view and purchase his products. Apisshop.bigcartel.com

aperture Arts on Tour NZ and Creative Queenstown present 'Aperture', The life and work of Ans Westra, on Friday 23 July 8 pm at the Athenaeum Hall. Martine Baanvinger returns in this creative and innovative one-women play about Ans Westra. (Ans Westra is a NZ Arts Foundation Icon photographer). Anna Jacoba Westra was born in the Netherlands on the 28th of April 1936, emigrating to New Zealand in 1957. With a love of photography Ans (as she was known) began taking photos of New Zealand life, particularly Māori Culture with which she had developed a lifelong fascination. Her prominence as an artist was most amplified by her 1964 piece, 'Washday at the Pa'. This work along with her other publications offered an insight into the Māori way of life around this time. Martine Baanvinger was trained at the Theatre Academy in Amsterdam. She is the founder of DramaLAB and creates performances in a direct, transparent, and intimate way. The audience becomes part of the journey, with Martine exploring a creative approach to lighting, sound, digital imaginary, transformation of set and costume. Martine captures the era and the struggles of the times beautifully, enabling the audience to appreciate the feelings and thinking of the time. Tickets – $25 book at www.eventbrite.co.nz 3

arrowtown village association news Ward Representation Review

It never pays to become complacent. The current threat of losing our dedicated Arrowtown Councillor in the current Ward review, being conducted by QLDC, brought our two key organisations, AVA and APBA, into instant action. We discovered that an Advisory Panel had been formed to make a recommendation to QLDC without any representation from Arrowtown, after a significant lapse in communication. The recommendation put forward to Council would create a new ward, called Kawarau, putting Arrowtown within an area incorporating Lake Hayes Estate, Shotover Country, Jack’s Point, Hanley Farm, Kelvin Peninsula and Kingston. After a flurry of meetings, both organizations were well represented at the QLDC monthly meeting on Wednesday 30 June and successfully put our case forward. We considered that Arrowtown had very little in common with these communities as we are a stand-alone town with a special character.

We draw your attention to AVA’s guiding document – the Shaping our Future Community Visioning Report (2017), SoF – where among many recommendations for continued support and protection directed at QLDC is that: “Arrowtown continues to have a dedicated representative to influence council decision making…” AVA, as your community voice, perceives the need for the Arrowtown Community to influence council decision-making in order to protect our valuable local and national asset. We believe this should be a significant consideration in the current representation review and urge you to submit your support on the consultation by Friday 6 August at www.letstalk.qldc.govt.nz/ representation-review.

Clean Air and Moisture Meters

In the midst of winter we are again noticing numerous smoky chimneys around our small town and urge residents to practise good burning in solid fuel burners. Check out our website www.arrowtownvillage.nz/environment/clean-air/ Firewood moisture meters are available at the APBA office on Arrow Lane on a $20 bond basis. You can report excessively smoky chimneys to the ORC Pollution Hotline 0800 800 033 or email pollution@orc.govt.nz web arrowtownvillage.nz email chairperson@arrowtownvillage.nz FB @arrowtownvillage 4

the new school block After a long wait and lots of patience from staff, students and the community, the new school block has been opened at Arrowtown Primary School. The new block will house the Year 0-4 students and is a wonderful addition to the school. On this important day, the students, staff and members of the community were joined by speakers, Kaumatua Darren Rewi, Julie Anderson from the Ministry of Education, Chris Bryant the Arrowtown School Principal, Scott Evans from MoE and Andrew Wall the Board of Trustees Chair. The school choir sung, with a Haka led by Odhran and Jed. As Arrowtown grows, providing dedicated facilities, like the new school block, enable Arrowtown Primary School to continue to provide the educational amenities that fulfil the needs of our communities’ children.

Matariki Celebrations on Buckingham Green Arrowtown Preschool had the pleasure of hosting Matariki celebrations on Buckingham Green and would like to thank all those that made it a success. Matariki is an event organised and facilitated by Arrowtown Preschool since 2012. The celebrations swiftly grew from an event that just involved immediate whānau of the Preschool, to the wider Arrowtown community, and has been a landmark feature of the Arrowtown calendar ever since. This year Arrowtown Preschool invited kapa haka groups from schools throughout the Whakatipu Basin to be part of the event, in recognition of the significance of Matariki as an event of national importance. Support from our neighbouring schools was overwhelming, and we were able to put together a solid afternoon of Maori cultural performances. We were so pleased to be able to welcome: Kāmuriwai Tuakana Kapa Haka from Arrowtown Primary School; Te Kura Taumata Rau o Te Kirikiri from Remarkables Primary School; Tuakana Kapa Haka from Queenstown Primary School; and Te iti o Tāhuna, Kapa Haka from Wakatipu High School. The tamariki of Arrowtown Preschool also made a stellar performance! This legacy event for Arrowtown Preschool ensures strong links to Te Ao Māori and demonstrates key Preschool values of whanaungatanga – Whānau

Tangata (Family & Community) and Ngā Hononga (Relationships). We could not have pulled this event off without the help of our whanau and community as well as: Cory Ratahi and Waiatatia, Bendix Stables for providing fabulous music with Thomas Brinsley, Ray White Arrowtown, Chard Farm, Lake and Wood Brew Co, Bernie Caravan Bar, Arrowtown Volunteer Fire Brigade, QLDC and Bidfood. 9

arrowtown business news Kia ora I’m Nicky, the new Manager of the Arrowtown Promotion & Business Association (APBA) and have taken over from Sue Patterson who retired in April. It has been a pleasure to meet so many of you over the last few months but please do continue to make yourself known and let us know how we can better represent you and your business. We have a little office at 12 Arrow Lane (behind e3 Scientific) and we’re always happy for anyone to pop in for a chat/cuppa. It has been a busy, but exciting few months with submissions on the QLDC & ORC 10 year plan, the draft ORC transport plan and we are continuing discussions in many areas on your behalf for the betterment of Arrowtown in relation to CBD safety, waste management and workforce challenges. We are currently seeking expressions of interest from local community and volunteer groups to nominate themselves for the profits of this years long lunch. Nominations came be made on our website and will be voted on at our AGM. The next members evening will be the Annual General Meeting web arrowtown.com 12

We’re delighted that both Jim Boult & Ruth Stokes will be speaking along with the APBA, providing an update on their upcoming infinitives and winter marketing activity and we hope to see many of you there. I can’t finish without talking about the Representation Review – After a small win in maintaining the Arrowtown ward when it went out for public submission, we now urge all business to submit on the recommendation in order to maintain the Arrowtown voice at the council table. Submissions are now open and close on 6th August. Ngā mihi. – Arrowtown Promotion and Business Association

councillor comment The Queenstown Lakes District is made up of three separate and unique wards, each in place to represent the needs of their residents. These wards are reviewed regularly to ensure the representation needs of our residents are adequate across the district. Arrowtown is the smallest ward (by population) and every time these reviews come around we face mounting pressure over our ward status and Councillor elect due to the significant growth elsewhere in the district. On a purely statistical measure the resident population of Arrowtown struggles to justify our own Ward, however it is short sighted to only consider the numbers. The other test considered by the electoral commission when determining appropriate representation is “Communities of Interest”. In this category

Arrowtown punches above our weight. With 150 years of historical relevance, a robust local economy, a proud and engaged community and a unique visitor experience, Arrowtown needs dedicated representation at the Council table. Arrowtown problems require Arrowtown solutions. Without dedicated representation from a Councillor who lives local AND loves local, Arrowtown’s unique nature will be eroded. Poorly thought-out signage spoiling our photogenic CBD or inappropriate architecture in our historical management zone are some of the real risks our village face, and we need a champion with a voice on Council to protect these interests. Now is the time to have your say. Please get involved in the QLDC representation review currently seeking public consultation and make a submission. I know our community is engaged; we just need to prove it. – Heath Copland, Councillor, Arrowtown Ward

It was approximately 50 years ago that Jim Ryan’s association with Arrowtown began. It was in the early 70’s that he purchased his first home in joint ownership with a close friend. Jim and his wife Irene eventually moved to Arrowtown permanently and it was from then that Jim began his lifelong involvement with the town and the people of Arrowtown. Campaigning on behalf of Arrowtown appears to have been Jim’s battle for over quarter of a century. Jim fought for a long time to stop Arrowtown’s

Borough Council being amalgamated with Queenstown Lakes District Council, and once again it was at another meeting where Jim was once again battling for Arrowtown’s independence, that he passed away. Along his journey, Jim was involved with many town projects. The APAG, the setting up of the CTV Cameras in Arrowtown and the Heritage Lighting to name but a few. As we mention journeys, it was in 2015 that Jim and Irene, on a journey from Christchurch to Akaroa, came within seconds of being killed when a large macrocarpa tree fell across the road hitting their car, resulting in a cracked windscreen, dents and scratches. Campaigning and lobbying for the rights of Arrowtown was what got Jim out of bed each morning and as fate would have it, he was continuing those battles right up to the day he died. if you know an interesting local email thelooparrowtown@gmail.com 15
