museum fun Exploring, creating, building, imagining, learning, having fun!! Want your kids to spend a couple of hours in a fun, interesting and educational way during the holidays? They can dress up and take a trip back in time, they can get their hands dirty being creative, they can experience the world around them. Remember, to do is to learn. There’s something to pique the curiosity of every child. Find the link on the Lakes District Museum website–museum queenstown.com for more info, or pop in for a programme.

the show will go on With thanks to the Central Lakes Trust (CLT), QLDC events fund, Arrowtown Lifestyle Retirement Village and all our other wonderful sponsors, the 106th Lake County A&P Show will take place at Lake Hayes on Saturday 9th January 2021. It is going to be a great day out and for this year only, entry will be free. Community is at the heart of the Show and as we have all seen over the past few months, it is also at the heart of the Wakatipu. So, with this in mind we want to recognize all the people who worked tirelessly during the lockdown and continue to support our amazing community. On display at the Show, you will see hand shearing and the best selection of fleeces from our local farms and stations. As always there will be the Best Pet Lamb in the pet section, and this year we are introducing a Best Pet Goat class as well. We have four horse and pony rings and also this year our Working Hunter is back, so there is going to be lots happening in our show ring. The Pavilion is always a riot of colour with so many competition entries. We have the usual classes plus, home distilled gin, gingerbread farm animals for the kids and make a garden sculpture, for all the family. There will be a variety of local trade and market stalls, so be sure to come and support them, all the while having a fun day out with the family. Help us bring the community together - it is going to be another fabulous show!

arrowtown village association news doggy manners do matter in arrowtown

With summer underway and more opportunities to walk our four-legged family members, the AVA thought it was timely to remind dog-owners to school up on local rules and regulations, as well as being mindful of other people when out with your dog. • If your dog is off-leash, please make sure you have it under voice control at all times, in consideration of other track users and general public. • Refer to the section on Animal Control on the QLDC Website (qldc.govt.nz), for an interactive map on where you can walk your dog and also where it must be on a lead. • Please dispose of bagged droppings correctly. If there is no bin, take them with you.

• If you lose your dog, or find one, a good start is to post the details on the Arrowtown Community Facebook group and phone QLDC's animal control team. It's also worth trying Remarkable Vets, as people sometimes drop found animals there. • AVA recommends that you check out www.lawa.org. nz/swim regularly for the swimming status of Lake Hayes, remembering that what is good/bad for you, could also be good/bad for your dog.

Finally, the AVA committee wish all Arrowtown residents a safe and happy Christmas and New Year. Thanks for your support this year. Check out our website arrowtownvillage.nz for local issues and information, also remember to follow our Facebook page for the latest news. Here’s hoping for a continuing COVID-free 2021! web arrowtownvillage.nz email chairperson@arrowtownvillage.nz FB @arrowtownvillage 4

breathe easy over winter Buy and stack your firewood now to burn dry and easily over winter. Stacking firewood during summer ensures it will have time to dry out before winter, meaning less air pollution from home heating. There are approximately 984 households in Arrowtown and 95% of the air pollution during winter is from home heating. During winter, Arrowtown often has poor air quality largely because of where it lies and the climate we have during those winter months.. Throughout the evenings, cold air flows down from the hills and gathers in and around Arrowtown, increasing the effects of the inversion layer. In the winter when air temperatures and wind speeds are lowest, and as more people heat their homes during colder weather, the still conditions mean that there is no wind to disperse the air pollutants. It is an issue that affects us all and one we must try and live with. So, as well as being better for the environment, dry wood will burn more efficiently, allowing people to get more out of their wood burner and creating a better, safer environment for everyone. www.lawa.org.nz

let’s help let’sforgotten eat! gone but not – lex perkins Lex was a fantastic community man. He had been a huge contributor to the Bluff community before running motels in Queenstown and then retiring to Arrowtown. It was hardly a retirement! He never sat still. As well as being the Arrowtown Ward councillor from 2010 to 2015, he served on the Village Association, the Autumn Festival Committee and the Planning Advisory Group. He was a hands on councillor and volunteer. He shifted chairs during festival events, pulled weeds, swept streets and mucked in where needed. He was a people person who loved a chat and had a great sense of humour. He relished his daily walk up Tobin’s track. One of his great legacies is the community housing units in Suffolk St which he strongly supported. We are grateful that this generous man had several years of genuine retirement and travelled around New Zealand in his campervan with his wife Wendy. His recent passing is a loss to the Arrowtown community and all who knew him. We will remember the twinkle in his eye and his constant whistling. – David Clarke and Scott Stevens – Two former Arrowtown councillors
