THE STING Jellyfish victims at record level By SALLY BENGTSSON AN unprecedented number of local bathers are being treated for painful stings following a mass jellyfish invasion of both the Mediterranean and Mar Menor. Many people are refusing to set foot in the water for fear of getting stung, despite the nets around swimming areas. Two years ago the problem seemed to have been resolved after town halls around the Mar Menor clubbed together and employed a jellyfish sweeper to rid the sea-water lake of the irritating creatures. But because the situation seemed to have been resolved, the Murcian government stopped subsidising the clearing boat, leaving the few remaining jellyfish to multiply dramatically. This has led to meltdown in various health centres around the Mar Menor over the past week, with huge numbers of bathers requiring medical attention. A spokesperson for the Socialist party in Cartagena said it was amazing that the government is saying beaches are

VAL AND AUSTIN’S STREET OF GOLD...

THE clocks will go back 50 years in Playa Flamenca tomorrow (Saturday) – for a massive street party to celebrate the Golden Wedding of Val and Austin Cottington. More than 100 guests will toast the popular couple from St Helens, who moved to Spain 12 years ago following their retirement. Austin worked as a long-distance lorry driver and Val as an auxiliary nurse.

The Cottingtons, then aged 21 and 17, met in St Helens while Austin was in the army – and married in the Lancashire town, too. Prior to settling in the Costa Blanca, they enjoyed many holidays in different parts of Spain. Their decision to move here permanently followed a holiday in Torrevieja… at a property which they have never managed to find since!

One of the victims, aged 24, was said to be in a serious condition with injuries to the back, arm and hand. The other stabbed youth, aged 22, was reportedly taken away on a life support machine. Police said the assailants have been detained and are awaiting a court appearance. Meanwhile, Torrevieja police chiefs have recruited six new officers to help monitor illegal street trading on the town’s beaches and boardwalk. The six have completed their first stage of training and take the number of local police in Torrevieja to just over 180.

72-YEAR-OLD Manchester shopkeeper was arrested this week after a man trying to rob his store was stabbed to death. He was detained after cops were called to the shop in Shrewsbury Street, Old Trafford, where a 30-year-old man was injured after a gang had tried to rob it. The suspect, believed to be the shopkeeper and named locally as Cecil Coley, a Jamaican known as 'Papa', was held on suspicion of attempted murder before the suspected raider died later in hospital. Chief Superintendent Mark Roberts said: "We are still trying to establish the circumstances of what has happened. "I would urge anyone who may have seen something to contact us." Resident Manmohan Singh, 57, said the owner had only recently turned the shop from a bric-a-brac store into a florist's.

MEET MISS ENGLAND

(who happens to be Welsh) ALIZE MOUNTER has all the looks, poise and elegance to be Miss England – but she happens to be a Welsh girl from Pontypridd.

22

The 22-year-old student, who even speaks the language of her fathers, was able to claim the prize because she now lives in London. Alize, who grew up in the Rhondda, said this week: “I’m proud to be representing England – but everyone who knows me will tell you that deep down I am very Welsh.” The 5ft 11in blonde beauty, a finalist in last year’s Miss Wales contest, beat 63 English girls to the title in Birmingham. A journalism student who appeared in the Britain’s Next Top Model reality TV show, added: “I’m so excited, I can’t believe it. I never expected to win.” A Miss England spokesman said the rules state that contestants must be British citizens and live in England. Alize won fair and square, she is a worthy Miss England,” he added. Welsh she may be, but Alize does have some cross-the-border heritage. Her father is English and her mother Hungarian. She will now compete for the Miss World title against, among others, the current Miss Wales, Sara Manchipp.

times as many Brits in Murcia as in 2001

By SALLY BENGTSSON

THE number of Europeans choosing to spend their retirement in the Murcia region has risen dramatically over the last 10 years. And especially British pensioners, whose numbers have multiplied an astonishing TWENTY-TWO times lasince 2001. This pattern has been repeated all along the Spanish coastline, to the point that eight Spanish provinces bordering the Mediterranean are

home to 90% of the European residents over the age of 55. These are: Alicante, Malaga, Almeria, the Balearic Islands, Gerona and Murcia plus Las Palmas and Tenerife in the Atlantic Ocean. Ten years ago, there were 1,400 foreign residents in Murcia aged over 65, with just 335 Brits on the electoral poll. Today that figure has rocketed to 13,671 (11,044 of European origin). Of these, 7,450 – more than half -are British. In

second place are the Germans, whose numbers have risen from 216 to 1,368, then French, 97 to 839. Then follow Dutch, Belgians, Swedish, Italian, Irish and Fins. The most popular areas for pensioners are Mazarron (3,172 foreign retirees), Los Alcazares (1,008), San Javier (717) and San Pedro del Pinatar (359). However, many foreign residents don’t register with their local town halls, so the actual numbers may be a lot higher.

RENOWNED UK dog whisperer Peter Singh is to help with re-homing at the Orihuela Animal Shelter. Shocked by the situation at the shelter, which is struggling to cope with the soaring numbers of dogs being abandoned in the municipality, Peter has volunteered his services at the upcoming adoption day and with future re-homing programmes. Peter, who specialises in dog psychology and can help owners to understand and communicate with their dogs, will be on hand at the adoption day on August 3 to offer free advice to would-be owners about the needs of the various dogs. He will also

I was truly moved at how wonderful these animals are.” Although it has only been fully operational for a few months, the shelter is already at crisis point, with more than 200 dogs at a facility designed to take just 98. A mass education and dog sterilisation programme, along with enforcement of chipping laws, is the only way forward, or the crisis we are facing now will become a permanent state of affairs, and can only get worse.” There are also around 30 beautiful cats and kittens at the shelter seeking new homes. English and German speaking volunteers will be available to help with adoptions next Wednesday from 11am until 3pm at the shelter in Partida Lo Arques, San Bartolomé, close to the Vega Baja Hospital. THE MANE ATTRACTION THE final chapter of the Faith Story has been captured on camera as SOL Productions followed the brave little pony’s story from the beginning on her incredible journey. The rollercoaster ride for all at the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre over the past months has been incredible and captured many hearts. Following Faith’s operations and recovery after losing a leg, new additions of rescued horses that were in foal, and the general day to day life at the centre has been busy to say the least. Raising the awareness of this rescue and rehabilitation centre is a priority. You don’t need to be a horse rider to appreciate the place, the peace and tranquility the centre offers is outstanding.

Faith’s a TV star!

Imagine looking after 36 horses, day in day out, feeding, mucking out, welcoming visitors, running the tack shop and the charity shop, the tea rooms, let alone organising the fundraisers. Sue, Rod and the volunteers really do run on horse power! The EHCRC slogan, “You can’t change the world by saving one horse, but you can change the whole world for the horse you save”, is so true at this pioneering rescue centre. Every horse they rescue and save really does now have the chance of a new, happy and safe life. You can visit to see for yourself, every day between 1 and 4 pm. Wednesday and Saturday are open days with the horse tours.

You can sponsor a horse for just five euros a month, you can make a donation of either your time and become a volunteer or a financial one that will go towards the funding of the operation. The SOL Productions documentary on the Faith Story and on the EHCRC

really will open your eyes as to the hard work and dedication that the team put in every single day. It’s now being broadcast on SOL TV and on www.solproductions.tv Log onto www.easyhorsecare.net to keep up to date with the centre.

Jellyfish stings at record level From Page One fit for bathing while the health centres are overloaded with stung swimmers. In a bid to resolve the situation around San Pedro, 36 Town Hall workers were up at the crack of dawn last Saturday to try to rid the waters of the jellyfish around the shores of the town. Armed with jellyfish strainers, they spent three hours pulling the wobbling masses out of the water. The strong winds on Friday had blown the jellyfish to the northern shores of the Mar Menor. Forty containers have been placed on the beaches in which to deposit the jellyfish, with bathers also encouraged to remove them from the water.

Dangerous The majority of the jellyfish are not particularly dangerous. The browny-coloured ones don’t sting, it’s the white and purple ones which do, and despite being much rarer than the brown ones a fair number are still being found in the still waters. The 43 kilometres of nets which protect swimming areas have helped, but the strong winds seem to have blown the jellyfish (which float on the top of the sea) over the nets. To make matters worse, some netting has been stolen, leaving certain areas unprotected. At El Carmoli a product poured into the sea to kill jellyfish

OPERATION JELLYFISH: But the clean-up campaign has not been entirely a success seems to have caused a skin reaction which is as bad as a jellyfish sting. The local government denies this – but another theory is that a machine used to chop up jellyfish had left lethal tentacles floating in the water and still able to cause a serious skin problem. In Orihuela Costa, the situation was no better, with six bea-

ches having to be closed to swimmers due to the high numbers of jellyfish present. The red flag was raised after 90 bathers had to be treated in a period of 40 minutes. The beaches shut were Punta Prima (18 bathers stung), La Mosca (15), Playa Flamenca (12), Cala Cerrada (9), La Zenia (24) and Cala Capitán (12).

Ryanair launch new court battle over Alicante boarding

RYANAIR has taken the Spanish Airport Authority, AENA, to court again - insisting it be allowed to embark and disembark passengers by foot at El Altet and not use the airport passageways to the plane. The airport’s Director, Santiago Martínez-Cava, was called to court in Elche on Wednesday as a witness in the case. It follows the court’s first ruling which considered that AENA should make an effort to allow boarding on foot when possible. AENA contends that on May 27 this year, operative tests were carried out to try boarding by foot in the presence of all the airlines which operate at El Altet. The companies, with the exception of Ryanair, all

concluded that, because of the security risk implied, it is not advisable to embark on foot, and that neither workers nor passengers should face the risk. Ryanair noted in court that the charge to use the airbridges was €97.62 an hour, and claimed that embarking by foot was quicker because two doors could be used simultaneously. They contended that the lack of confidence from clients comes from the lack of punctuality which is ‘distorted’ in Alicante, where their business model cannot be followed. The company’s lawyer demanded that boarding be carried out by foot at 15 of the gates in the new terminal as soon as possible. AENA said they had shown willing, and that after

carrying out tests in the presence of all the airlines, and despite the negative results, they were prepared to allow boarding by foot during the winter on a maximum of six gates. But Ryanair continues to protest, claiming the test on May 27 was not carried out in a real way, as barriers and signs were not erected for it. The airline contends that the of the 313 delays it has suffered since March 24 this year at El Altet, 14.7% of them were due to the airport bridges. After five hours Ryanair called for a provisional ruling which would allow them to operate on all the airport gates, and not only in the winter, while AENA called for Ryanair to observe the regulations like other airlines. The court case continues.

ELBULLI TURNS OFF EAT 'ELBULLI, the beachside Spanish restaurant repeatedly crowned the world's best, will close tomorrow (Saturday) after pushing back the boundaries of cuisine for more than two decades under chef Ferran Adria. The remote eatery in Cala Montjoi, some two hours north of Barcelona, will re-open in 2014 as a non-profit culinary think tank that will investigate new cooking techniques and develop new flavours. The elBulli foundation plans to grant between 20 and 25 scholarships annually for chefs to spend a year working with elBulli's core staff. It will share its ideas and findings on the Internet. Adria, whose radical innovations since

he became head chef at elBulli in 1987 include foie grass noodles and potato foam, says he is dispensing with the Michelin 3-star restaurant to spend more time being creative. "elBulli is not closing, it is transforming itself, because its soul is going to remain," he told a group of students in Valencia earlier this month. Under Adria the eatery, known as El Bulli until 2008, has never been a commercial restaurant in the strictest sense. Shortly after becoming head chef, Adria decided to open the restaurant for just half the year to give staff to develop his trailblazing approach to cooking. In 2001, just as El Bulli was becoming well known, he decided to close the eatery for lunch to give staff even more time to be creative in the kitchen. The 50-seat restaurant fields more than two million requests a year for its roughly 8,000 sittings, with tables mostly allotted by lottery. Dinner is a degustation menu of some 40 small dishes and costs around 250 euros ($360) per head.

THE POWER SHOWER

Obscenity of the uncaring empires SOLAR generating ‘farms’, covering the size of up to 20 football pitches, have been springing up in locations in Eastern England, each capable of generating enough electricity to power a small town. Sad, then, that the government is pulling the plug on more of these farms, claiming it doesn't have enough subsidy money for these and also the growing number of people who want to generate electricity on the roofs of their own homes. But that isn't the reason why I'm writing about these solar power farms, which I believe should be encouraged, because each one that comes on stream makes us that bit less dependent on power from the volatile Middle East and also Russia.

on the other side of the Red Sea, and provide them with the same irrigation which has transformed their part of the desert. This last weekend was the first time for weeks that the News of the World saga wasn't headline news. We've all watched the ‘great’ and the ‘good’ (I use those words with contempt) falling on their swords because of their lawlessness, greed, ruthlessness, or incompetence. One fact in particular that spoke volumes for me from the Murdoch parliamentary quizzing was that the News of the World represented just one per cent of the family ‘empire’ which employed 52,000 people - the size of a small town.

Wealth

Famine Just imagine masses of these farms built on the shoreline along the Horn of Africa, where millions of people currently are dying from famine. Just imagine these solar farms generating electricity to run vast desalination plants capable of sending pure water across the desert regions of that part of Africa. Within a few years the troubled continent could become the bread basket for the world, transforming the fortunes of people who live there. Just imagine a time when we don't have the heartwrenching appeals for cash from African countries where millions are at risk and thou-

sands are dying from starvation through a famine, caused by three years of drought. Last week, urgent TV appeals for cash to provide aid resulted in £15m being raised from the public in the UK. Compare that with the recent obscene £160m winnings from the Euro millions to one couple. There really

is something wrong with the world, isn't there? Yes, I know you are about to say how useless it is raising money for Africa because by the time it's been syphoned off by warlords, corrupt governments and crooks, there is precious little left to help the people who desperately need it. It's like shovelling

money into a bonfire. And it is a massive problem trying to help people in the middle of an almost constant war zone. I was moved by a television interview given by a woman clutching a starving child. She was obviously a Muslim because of the way she was dressed, but she questioned where was the

help from other richer countries - and particularly where was the help from other nearby Muslim countries. It is sickening that just over the Red Sea is superrich Saudi Arabia, and in particular Dubai, built in the desert from oil money. Perhaps the Arabs should spend some of their trillions to help fellow Muslims dying

It demonstrates how wrong it is that a company or a few individuals should have so much power and wealth - totally wrong when they have more than some small countries. This is where governments should be focusing in future. These last few weeks we've been working on selling our bricks and mortar UK home and buying a lodge on a holiday park as a base and using the money to up-size in Spain. We've been transporting our garden stuff and hacking at the available land at the bottom of the park lodge site. And every day we've got soaked to the skin in one downpour after another. I'll leave you to be the judge on what's better, the summer Spanish heat or the summer UK monsoon!

Vehicles 2 Drivers 0 SO HOW DID THEY CRASH?

HAVE you ever witnessed a road accident involving two driverless vehicles? Well it happened right in front of my eyes last Friday – and my first reaction was to smile for Candid Camera. Yes, it did cross my mind that someone might have set the whole thing up. I mean, there I was driving into the Gama car park in Doña Pepa when this battered white van starts reversing from the supermarket entrance across my path from right to left and a couple of metres in front of me. ‘‘’Cheeky monkey,’’ I thought. ‘‘It was my right of way, not yours.’’ As the van swung around with the camber of the road I suddenly realised it wasn’t going to stop. And a couple of seconds later, BANG. The van’s rear end crunched into the back of a parked red Honda at around 10mph, perhaps a little less. The van’s momentum caused it to bounce back a foot or so before finally nestling against the now seriously dented bumper of the Honda. As with any other close encounter of the heard kind,

BUMPER TO BUMPER: The Rover and the van after the accident a row of heads quickly appeared at the supermarket entrance, accompanied by a chorus of ‘Madre mia, que pasa?’’ In Spanish. I quickly parked Betty (that’s my own little Kia, named after the large Betty Boop sticker on her rear end), grabbed my camera and waited for the sparks to fly between the two drivers. Only in this case the two people who owned the vehicles involved in the bump were shopping. The Honda driver emerged first – a slim English woman in her forties called Lee (note

to self, perhaps she spells it Leigh). She was not amused. Neither were her three friends, one of whom dialed 112 on her mobile almost as quickly as Ms Courier Editor grabbed her first shot of the embracing bumpers. As we waited for the Guillermo Viejo (my joke rough translation of Old Bill), Lee broke down in tears, clearly in shock. The mystified van driver came out of Gama, bag of shopping in one hand and scratching his head with the other as to why his van was no longer parked right across

the supermarket’s only entrance. He had just sussed out that he’d forgotten to engage his handbrake when I took the photo on the right. Seconds later he was trying to coordinate the art of banging his fists on the side of the van with repeatedly whimpering the Spanish slang for defaecation. Or maybe it was Bulgarian. Within minutes, the police arrived – a quartet of them in two patrol cars. It was like a scene from Four Coppers and a Funeral as weepy Lee (or perhaps Leigh) tearfully

A tin of cat-astrophe I’VE did a quick shop at Consum on Tuesday aimed primarily at topping up my stock of cat food in preparation for my upcoming visit to the UK. My main concern was to silence one of the strays who spends half his life on my back doorstep crying like a baby until he gets his fix. And he doesn’t like the hard stuff...for him it has to be gooey chunks in gravy. You know, the gunk that attracts the slugs and ants. But at least the one he likes is cheap. A dozen tins at 55 cents totted up to €6.60, which I thought no more of until I got home and started to put the tins away. One of them seemed to have a small crack in the lid and on closer examination, I realised that it had been opened. And not recently, either. I can’t describe what I saw when I pulled the top off. Take a look for yourselves. Putrid! It must have been on the shelf, opened and decaying, for weeks.

My first inclination was to take the whole stinking thing back to Consum and demand a replacement in no uncertain terms. But no way was I going to shlep five kilometres for a miserable cents...and then spend 15 minutes trying to make myself understood. Not to mention the fact that the manager might well think I was trying it on. Of course, I could always keep the

shook off the van driver’s humble apology. One of her friends set herself up as an interpreter – refusing to accept that one of the cops understood more English than she did Spanish. And gradually the antagonism melted into an uneasy peace. I like to think I helped a tiny bit by telling Lee (and Leigh as well) of my own experience when a Smart car drove into my Kia a few months ago. Regular readers of this column will recall my surprise at how quickly, smoothly and efficiently the insurance companies dealt with the paperwork and red tape. And how it eased my concerns about coping with future incidents. The positive aspects for Lee are that she could still drive her damaged car – and that the incident happened close to her home. It’s not as if anybody was hurt. There was nobody in either vehicle to BE hurt. Negative points? Inconvenience, that’s all and it is likely to be minimal, particularly if the insurance company provides her with a courtesy car. The van driver was a hugely repentant Bulgarian lad from Torrevieja, while expat Lee was almost within

MOMENT OF TRUTH: Van driver realises he forgot to engage his handbrake site of her home. Both parties were properly insured and once the dust settles, will no doubt live happily ever after. The bump probably rated no more than 0.2 on the Richter scale of motoring collisions. In any case Gama is too high up for a salt-lake tsunami to wash a single expat away. But I can always sit my grandchildren on my knee and tell them about the day I saw two vehicles crash – and neither had a driver.

THE LURVE OF MY LIFE If only the Book of Eric had worked for me‌

THEY say dog is man's best friend. But my best friend was Eric Armstrong. I looked up to Eric particularly during the months of February and August because Eric was a dentist and I literally had to look up to him while I reclined in his chair having my teeth checked. Besides being a good dentist, Eric was a silver-tongued success with the women - he had the gift of both the gob and the gab. Eric could chat up a plank of wood if he had to, although I don't believe that particular need ever arose. One August afternoon I looked up to Eric as he probed my molars and asked him: 'Agaah guhee gernew . . . ?'

'Hang on a sec, Dave,' he said. 'Your mouth is full of instruments.' I repeated my question: 'How come you are successful with women yet they don't want to know me? All I want is for someone to love me.' Eric shrugged: 'I don't know what the problem is, mate. But have you ever thought about getting a dog?' Anyway, during the summer of 1963, when I was short on experience but long on hormones, I fell in lurve. She was a vision of loveliness. A beauty to behold. A goddess even. Her sleek raven hair hovered tantalisingly over her alabaster shoulders. The scene was a pub in central Manchester. The object of my passion was accompanied by a friend. But that didn't matter because I was with a friend, too -- my best mate and secret weapon, Eric the dentist. We strolled over to the bar. Eric whispered to me: 'Just follow my lead.' He flashed his perfect gnashers at the two girls. 'Hello,' he said. 'Er . . . hello, Eric,' I responded. Eric dug me in the ribs and hissed: 'Not you, you berk! I'm talking to the girls.' Then the adored one's pal piped up as if she were offering a unique selling point: 'My friend is Spanish.' That figured, I sighed to myself. The smouldering dark eyes. The luscious ruby lips. And then those lips parted and a sort of mewling sound emerged . . . 'Ooh, get 'er. Yeah, I yam Spanish but only aarf.' My passion was immediately punctured. My ardour turned softer. Never had I heard the English language so profoundly mangled. Please don't think I was being snooty. I have a pronounced Coronation Street accent but this girl's Mancunian tones were off the scale. Was this creature the product of a union between an exiled bella princesa and a Salford bookie? Not so much a Senorita, more a Send Your Rita. I fled the pub but not before

I heard Eric work his magic on the half-Spanish one's friend. 'Is there a thief in your family?' he asked gently. Now, dear reader, you probably know what's coming next. It's so naff nowadays but 40 years ago that sort of chat-up line was awesome. 'A thief in my family?' answered the girl puzzled. 'Yes,' Eric jumped in. 'Because someone stole the stars and put them in your eyes.' The girl blushed and fluttered her lashes. Then she and Eric shot off to the Odeon to watch Love with the Proper Stranger from the rear stalls. I wended my weary way home and sought some parental advice. 'Tell me, mother,' I said. 'Am I that insignificant that no-one wants to know me?' 'Not just now, our David,' she said. 'I'm watching telly. Why don't you trot off to bed and we'll talk in the morning.' I sloped off upstairs, put on my pyjamas and crawled under the covers. But I couldn't get to sleep. A nagging thought was niggling at me. And then I realised . . . I stormed back downstairs. 'Mother!' I shouted. 'You do realise that it's only five o'clock in the afternoon!' 'I know,' mother mumbled. 'But I was in the middle of Blue Peter . . .' Fate is a funny thing. I thought the day was a write-off but one hour later and I was in lurve again. She was seated alone at a table as I walked into the coffee bar. This girl did not look half-Spanish but still, she wasn't half attractive. She looked at me and said huskily: 'I like my men with an element of mystery.' 'Mysterious? Me?' I gulped. 'Yes,' she said. 'It must be the pyjamas.' Before my courage deserted me I bounded to her side and quoted from the Book of Eric. 'Tell me. Is there a thief in your family?' The latest love of my life leapt to her feet, grabbed me by the pyjama lapels and snarled: 'What's my brother go to do with it? They put him in Pentonville for a crime he didn't commit. Now push off, toerag!

Dog owners take a bow for honesty

Are you ready to be tangoed? FORMER All England professional Latin American champion Lyn Aspden is out to tango local ballroom dancing fans this summer. In their first competition in Spain, her pupils John and Kathryn Hugginson (pictured) came fourth in the Valencian Senior Championships in Alicante last month. And now her Denelle Dance Club is to run Argentine Tango classes every Tuesday at The Club in Quesada. A partner is not essential

ANYONE who doubts the inherent honesty of animal lovers should have a word with the Animal Aid Association’s Linda Lloyd. Because the association’s agreement to fund the kennel fees of cashstrapped dog owners who return to the UK until they find a job has backfired only once. And Linda reckons she’s taken the risk at least 40 times. ‘‘With that lone exception, every single person has paid us back,’' says Quesada-based Linda, who with husband Trevor has been involved with Animal Aid for the last eight years. The organisation cannot afford to finance a shop so its main outlets are stalls on Rojales market and, every other Sunday, in Churchill's Bar in

and singles are always welcome. The classes are at 7:45pm for beginners and 8:30pm for Intermediates - and a Ballroom and Latin American practice session will follow throughout the summer. Ballroom and Latin American classes will recommence on September 8 at The Big Wok, Punta Prima and on September 12 at The Club in Quesada. For further info contact Lyn on 635584431, lynatdenelledance@hotmail.com or www.denelledanceclub.com.

The profits and proceeds of other fundraising efforts finance the rescue and homing of abandoned cats and dogs and cats at Amber Lodge boarding kennels, along with innoculations, surgery and other veterinary fees. Last year, the association, which also provides dog and cat food to needy animal owners, spent an astonishing 57,000 euros caring for animals. But with more and more animals being abandoned, the need for support has never been greater. SWELL RASO! ORPHANS HIT CHARITY JACKPOT By DONNA GEE IT STARTED off as a project to buy a washing machine for the EMAUS orphanage in Elche. But Karen Owen’s plan mushroomed dramatically culminating in a spectacular family Funday at El Raso on Sunday. On an action-packed afternoon supported by Ruby’s Bar and the Hot Stone restaurant, the charity bandwagon rolled on a unique fiesta attended by several hundred revellers. The programme featured elements as diverse as Norma Downing’s belly-dance troupe, a Shetland pony from the Easy Horse Rescue Centre, the youthful dancing of Holly and Friends, and a dazzling designer motor bike. Hosted by the TKO Road Show, it featured continuous live music from a succession of tribute acts, including Phil Collins impersonator Liam Moore, a friend of Karen’s, who flew in from Liverpool especially for the event. With raffles and an auction boosting funds still further, the EMAUS orphanage kids can expect a huge bonus. Said Karen: ‘‘Thanks to the great generosity of so many people, we’ll be buying them a dryer as well as a washing machine – plus a TV, various VETERAN DJ and items of clothing and lots chartster Joseph more. HARD WATER PROBLEMS AS I am sure you are all aware, our water here in the south of Spain is very hard, causing a multitude of problems for us all around the home. Due to the very high level of calcium in our tap water many home owners are suffering from blocked taps, blocked shower heads, and a dramatically reduced life span on their washing machines, water heaters and dishwashers. This is caused by the build-up of calcium on pipes, fittings, heater elements etc. In many properties the electric water heaters are only lasting two years, some of which start leaking and even burst. Washing machine and dishwasher elements have their life span reduced by at least half. And as if electricity wasn't expensive enough, paying to heat through 6mm of calcium before reaching the water, as many of us are doing, will increase your electrical use by at least 35%. Have you noticed the amount of fabric softener needed to get your clothes soft? Skin irritations after showering? Smeary dishes and vehicles after Washing? All this is caused by a high level of calcium in our water.

Up until recently we had very few, and expensive, options available to us, to overcome these problems. One of the most common was the salt softener machines. These cost approximately 1000 euros to buy, require the space of a base kitchen unit and are expensive to maintain, having to buy salt to keep the machine topped up. Then, because of the high salt content of the water, you need an additional reverse

osmosis filter system fitted at your kitchen sink unit with an additional tap, just so you can drink your water. Now we have a far cheaper and more effective method; “The descalcificador universal”. This machine works with 13,000 electronic pulses passing through the pipe-work of your property. It breaks down the molecules that form calcium. Not only will it soften your water, it will remove all calcium from

your water and in the process clean all your existing pipes, heater elements, shower heads etc. extending the life of your appliances, and eliminating burst pipes or water heaters from the corrosion of calcium. With no maintenance and an annual running cost of less than 3 euros, clearly this is the answer to calcium

problems. No Chemicals, no salt, no plumbing necessary, and no need for reverse osmosis systems with an additional tap, as our machine leaves your water drinkable. The

technology

was

designed and developed in a UK university and passes all the C.E. recorded standards. Softened water reduces the use of detergents, shampoos and fabric softeners. Your clothes and fabrics will be far softer and skin reactions will be a thing of the past. We are so confident with the results of “the descalcificador universal” we will refund your money in full within 6 months of purchase if the machine doesn’t meet with our claims. Better still, we cover our machine with a Lifetime guarantee. Also now available: the same technology for your swimming pool. No more calcium deposits on your tiles, or cleaning all your pool’s pipe system, leaving you calcium free soft water for you and your family’s enjoyment. All these advantages can be in your home fully installed for under 350 euros. Please see our advertisement below for further details.

SOLAR ENERGY TO POWER 3,400 HOMES IN NORTH-EAST SPAIN FIRST Solar Inc. (FSLR), the world’s largest maker of thin-film solar modules, has sold a 9.9- megawatt project in north-west Spain to an investment fund managed by KGAL GmbH & Co, it was reported last Thursday. Currently under construction by Gehrlicher Solar Espana, with an expected completion date in December, the 37.6 hectare solar farm will produce an estimated 15,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of clean, green electricity a year, equivalent to the annual needs of around 3,400 Spanish households and CO2 savings of approximately 5,600 metric tons/year. "We are very glad about the successful acquisition of this exceptional solar farm in Spain and the opportunity to collaborate with highly professional partners like First Solar and Gehrlicher," said Dr. Klaus Wolf, managing director of KGAL. "The total capacity of solar farms owned and operated by KGAL's investment funds now exceeds 200 MW." The solar farm is located in Pereruela, in the province of Zamora, about 250 kilometres north-west of Madrid. The Zamora area is one of the sunniest in Europe, with around 1,700 kWh/m(2) of sunlight a year. Guillermo Barea Herranz, CEO of Gehrlicher Solar Espana, said: "We are happy about the successful realisation of this project together with our business partners. Based on our long-term experience and the high potential of the Spanish PV market, we look forward to installing many more PV systems in this region as well as in the rest of the world."

"Large-scale projects are essential to greenhouse gas reductions and driving economies of scale that make us more competitive with fossil fuels," said Peer Guenzel, Managing Director of First Solar's Utility Systems Business Group in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. "We are pleased to be able to continue to enable a market for largescale solar power plants in Spain." The long-term financing for the Zamora project was structured by HSH Nordbank AG. Jurgen H. RESCUED: 12 puppies thrown out with the rubbish

Road-rage killer set to be freed this week ROAD rage killer Tracie Andrews will walk free from prison this week – as remorseless and unrepentant as the day she went in, 14 years ago. The 41-year-old, who stabbed her 25-year-old fiance Lee Harvey up to 40 times then claimed he had been killed by a vengeful motorist, is due to be released on Thursday, still refusing to say sorry. A source told the Mirror: “She refuses to take the blame. Her attitude is that she has done her time and the slate is now clean. She sees no reason to say sorry to anyone. “Her family are concerned that she will be hounded wherever she goes. They wanted her to make a public statement on her release, for the first time fully admitting what happened and expressing her regret and sorrow over Lee’s death. But she has refused to listen and has said repeatedly, point blank, that she will not say anything to anyone.” In prison, ex-barmaid Andrews changed her name to Tia Carter and had £5,000 plastic surgery to her lower jaw to

Ice-cream vans face meltdown

EU rules could mean the end of the road for the traditional British ice-cream van, campaigners are warning. Van owners fear they will be forced out of business when air quality standards are extended in the New Year to cover a new range of vehicles. The vans are among hundreds of thousands that will attract hefty fines if they do not meet strict new particle emission limits from January 3 next year.

The Ministry of Justice turned down her request for lifetime anonymity – like her prison pal Maxine Carr, 34, received on her release seven years ago after serving time for providing Soham killer Ian Huntley with a false alibi. She will be staying in a secure “approved residence” in the north of England, protected by CCTV. Andrews will be under a night-time curfew. Lee’s family, including his 19-year-old daughter Danielle, who was just five when he was murdered, are outraged at her release. His grieving mum Maureen, 65, will never forgive Andrews for holding her hand during a TV appeal to nail her son’s killer. Maureen said: “All we have left are memories and a grave while she’s ready to carry on as if nothing happened. She is evil.”

Animal welfare workers fear more pets will be dumped as the economic squeeze means people can no longer afford to look after them. The pups — who have no names yet — will be put up for free adoption in three weeks once their strength has built up.

THE INBETWEENERS

How to write an OK CV ...and why you should tear it up and do an amazing one! by Mike

if you’re the wrong fit for the company or job, it’s better to know now then go through a series of interviews to land a job you don’t even want.

SEVERAL times in my life I’ve needed a CV to apply for a job. Inevitably each time I want to refresh my CV, I Google CV writing guide, follow the advice given and an hour later I’m done. Problem? The average generic CV is utterly soulless, rarely shares anything useful, and, as a result is a total a waste of time. Today I’ll give you my advice for writing an average CV and then ask you to tear it up, start again and create something amazing (and useful for the recruiter too).

Prove don’t tell: part 1 It’s easy to tell someone you are capable to do the job. It’s also easy to say you can run a 3-minute mile, hold the World record for most hotdogs eaten in 5 minutes and donate everything you earn to charity. Proving it however, is slightly more difficult. The first thing I look for is PROOF they can do what they say. Proof means, photos, samples, clippings, testimonials and references, it doesn’t mean impassioned pleas or begging.

How to write an okay CV This one’s easy, see. All you need to do is list the following: List your name, DOB, nationality and contact details at the top of the CV. List your work experience, start dates, end dates, job titles and responsibilities. List your interests. Let the person reading the CV know something about you. List the name and contact details of your references These are people who the company you want to work for can contact to find out more about you. It is best you ask these people if they are happy to be listed first. These people should know you professionally – teach-

Prove don’t tell: part 2

ers, your old boss etc.

How to write an amazing CV This one’s a little bit more complex. If you’re looking for a job you’ll love, in a company you’ll love, it’s going to be harder. Well, not necessarily harder, but it will require you to be braver, and forget what you think you

know about CVs. The problem with the CV above is that it totally fails in delivering the aim of the CV – proving to the recruiter you are able to do job, and getting them to call you. These tips below are a starting point to help you write an amazing CV. They’re not set in stone, and not all of them are relevant. But you should find them useful. And don’t forget to leave your own tips below in the comments.

What does the person reading this want from it?

If you want to make any document useful, the starting point MUST be to consider the needs of the person reading it. If you can’t do that, you may as well give up now. If it’s a good job at a good company they’ve just read 50 other CVs – they’re probably feeling sleepy, bored and uninspired. THINK – what does this person REALLY care about when it comes to hiring me and make sure your CV reflects that.

Don’t talk about the basics

Don’t use the CV to prove you can do basic things like being on time, prioritise your workload, or make tea and avoid making generic, subjective sentences like “hard working”. Everyone should be able to do these things, and even if not, they’re rarely that important. The document is to prove you can do the core tasks of the job – and you want to use it to do so.

Be yourself

It’s a bit like dating. It’s easy to say what you like on your profile, but when they meet you in person it’s hard to keep up the act. Make sure your CV is honest and reflects who you:

Yes, we all know stats are frequently open to interpretation. But for the recruiter stats are proof of ability and more engaging then subjective comments about ability. Stats are proof of what you have done, and where. Relevant experience first.. and last Traditionally I would tell people to ensure that your CV has your most relevant experience first. The person reading is likely to make a snap decision whether to spend the next 5 mins reading the rest of your CV, or picking those nose and filing their nails – so it’s important to have something relevant to engage the recruiter immediately. Taking this a step further.. when you start rambling about experience that isn’t relevant are you adding value or just watering down the impact of the rest of your CV? The recruiter doesn’t care that you can sing the alphabet backwards.

Say more with less Stop rambling. Give them reader enough to get them to call you for interview and no more. Remember, they’re busy.

References It’s very unlikely the recruiter will call your references before they see you. So offer references on request.

Give it soul Add personality to your CV.. you’re are very talented, don’t be ashamed to add some bragging comments. For example: “a whiz at turning a dull press release into a hold-thefront-page event”. “A powerful wit that could unite opposing world leaders” etc etc (this is proof)

It’s not a numbers game 10 great, personal CVs is better than 1000 generic ones sent to any job vaguely related to what you’re interested in.

The snails that survive being eaten by birds SOME tiny snails in Japan can survive a trip through a bird's digestive tract. When graduate student Shinchiro Wada and his colleagues at Tohoku University fed the Tornatellides boeningi snails to captive white-eye birds and brown-eared bulbuls birds, they noticed that about 15% of the snails passed through the birds and were pooped out alive! How do the snails survive? Wada isn't sure. The snails are very small, which may help keep their shells from cracking. Wada says that the snails have the ability to seal off their shells with a mucus film, which may help keep the birds' digestive fluids out.

editor@thecourier.es Psychic learning day dampened my spirit YOUR VIEWS ON OUR NEWS

A witness to truth

LAST week, I attended a ‘Psychic Workshop, which I had seen advertised in the local press. I wanted to go as I have always had an interest in clairvoyance and the supernatural. I did not know what to expect as I had never been to anything like this before. We started proceedings by introducing ourselves. There were 12 people present – ten women and two men – plus the facilitator. Everyone seemed nice and normal, but some were more fervent than others. The teacher started by reading to us at great length about what we would get out of the day but I’m afraid most of it did not make any sense at all to me. One of the ladies present was a believing Roman Catholic and she immediately became very upset by some of the things that were said. She went at sat outside all morning.

THANKS to Donna Gee for such a positive article on Jehovah's Witnesses. You expressed your personal opinion without causing offence, and that is the amazing thing about the freedom that Jehovah gives everyone....the right to choose what to believe in. The numbers are growing worldwide and people are finally realising that Bible prophecy is being fulfilled. Hope those ladies keep calling on you, Donna! Thanks again. VIOLET KING I only wrote what I think, Violet. If people listened to Witnesses rather than berating them, the world would be a better place DONNA

Drowsy

Woman, 51, on death charge SPAIN’S national police arrested a 51-year-old Spanish woman on Tuesday on suspicion of murdering her partner. Valencia police said a knife

was plunged into the man’s neck at around 4pm that day in the La Roqueta neighbourhood. The victim had called the police to say he was being stabbed

and the couple’s relationship was said to be “difficult and stormy”.The dead man had a criminal record for violence and sexual assault on the womenX

We were told to close our eyes and repeat different mantras – and then write down what we felt. Except for feeling drowsy, this did nothing for me. After lunch, we were given exercises to discover our psychic and medium powers. Facing a partner, we were to tell them what personality and qualities they possessed. As I had spoken to this person at lunch, I already had a few ideas about her, so I just padded out these submissions – and my partner was very impressed. So much for my psychic powers! Then we went on to mediumship. I was chosen to demonstrate my ability. I had to stand at the front with my

eyes closed and try to be in contact with the spirit world and communicate with a guide. At first I wanted to say that I could not see or feel anything but I decided to play along and using my vivid imagination, I described my spirit guide as being a young man, smartly dressed and of Mediterranean appearance. I said he had a message for one of the group. Continuing on this theme, two other women joined in, saying that they too could see him – and elaborating further. I was very shocked by this as he was purely a figment of my imagination.

Exploited After thinking about this for two days, I am concerned that vulnerable people are being exploited. It had cost me 28 euros, including lunch, and I certainly gained nothing from it. Lots of the folk there had certain deep issues which they are trying to find solutions for – and I feel these excesses could be very dangerous. One of the group, a qualified clinical hypnotist, was also very concerned at some of these procedures, especially trying to find ‘the Inner Child’. Are these people registered in any way with the authorities. Do they pay tax on their earnings? I hope this has not offended any of the genuine, kind people I met. But I for one, did not leave there with any signs of enlightenment. ROSALIND EASTLAND, El Raso, Guardamar

YOU’RE LICKED! MEET Vegas, the police dog who proved a dead loss – because she hates biting people. The 19-month-old German shepherd learnt to jump through windows, ignore gunshots and bark on command. But she put in a paw performance when it came to sinking her teeth into the bad guys. So bosses at the Northumbria force’s Ponteland HQ had to let her go. Trainer Sergeant John Sim said: “Not all dogs find it easy to bite, surprisingly. Vegas was too tentative. ‘‘But she’ll make a lovely pet.”

RICHARD CAVENDER

Bluemoon Solutions www.bluemoonsolutions.es

BlueMoon Solutions is the computer and IT services company on the Costa Blanca, they provide quality computer services at realistic prices and specialise in working with home users and small businesses.

Richard moved to Spain four years ago having left his management background behind in the UK and decided to use his IT skills to help home users and small businesses with their PC problems. Now a relaxed 'computer man' he is out and about in the Spanish sun every day, making house and shop calls and using his vast experience and qualifications to (usually) sort out the problem there and then. Computers are his hobby as well as his work so don’t be surprised to get an answer to your email in the early hours!

ADVICE: Paul was getting frustrated because Hotmail ADVICE: Peita was having problems getting the right setwould not save his password. tings selected for sound and microphone within Skype

My Hotmail account is driving me mad. Whenever I log in I have to put my login name and password every time, there is no facility to remember me. Would you know if this is a general fault on Hotmail, or is there something I can do? It’s so annoying having to log in every time. Appreciate your help, many thanks, Paul

Q A

Hi Paul, you don’t tell me what operating system or web browser you are using so I am going to assume that you are using Vista or Windows 7 with Internet Explorer 9. If you are not yet using IE 9 then the first thing I would recommend you do is download it and install it, if you have a look at your Windows Update settings it should be in there waiting for you to agree to its install. If you already have IE9 installed then have a look inside Tools, Internet Options, Content and click on the "settings" button next to AutoComplete, you should have a tick in the box "ask me before saving passwords".

ADVICE: Derek was having problems with his Microsoft Outlook archive files. Hi Richard, I am having problems with my archive. I get the following error message: Error while archiving folder “inbox” in store Derek.dawkins@Thansa.com Path does not exist. Verify the path is correct. What can I do???

Q A

Hi Derek, the path that your computer is referring to is the location of the archive file for Outlook, you can check where your computer “thinks” this is located by going into the Control Panel and double clicking on the “mail” icon, from there you will click on “data files” and then you will see the locations for the mail files, in your specific case you are looking for the location of the archive file, probably called “archive.pst”. You should make sure that your archive.pst file exists and is in the correct location – this problem has probably occurred because that file has been moved to a different location.

Q A

Hi, we cannot hear our friends on Skype without the headphone/microphone plugged in, can you help please? Hi Peita, this is a common problem with Skype users and usually occurs when the wrong settings are selected within the Skype options.

You can check your settings and modify them if necessary by doing the following… 1. Disconnect any headphones you have plugged into your laptop. 2. Open up Skype by double clicking on its icon 3. Click Tools, Options to open up the options screen 4. Click Audio Settings and the following screen will be displayed 5. Click on the arrow to the right of Microphone and you may have a number of microphones to choose from, select each one individually until you see the volume bar (green squares under the Microphone settings) increase with the background noise. 6. Click on the arrow to the right of the Speakers and you may have a number of speaker options, if you do select each one individually and then click on the green circle with the white triangle in it to the right of the speaker name – when you hear sound you have the correct one selected. 7. Click Save once you have the correct Microphone and Speaker selected.

Don’t forget you can follow me on twitter @bluemoonspain Alternately why don’t you sign up for my newsletter. You can do this by going to:www.bluemoonsolutions.es and fill in the form that is on any page except the front page.

FIXED: Bill writes to confirm a fix we printed a few weeks ago. Hi Richard, sorry I have been delayed in letting you know about my PC regarding the Blue page freeze up. I have been back to the UK for 2 weeks. The solution you suggested about the PC perhaps over heating was 100% correct, I hadn't realised that one of the fans was intermittent, obviously it seems when I moved the PC tower, to check the fan, it must have shaken the fan enough to start it going, so when I checked it was whizzing round. But I caught the bugger by accident idle!! So replaced it with a new one & Pat was checking emails whilst I was away & it never stopped once, so problem solved. Thanks for your long distance diagnostics, did you yourself out of a job lol. Keep up the good work Richard, best regards Bill.

Tamales the easy way

Ingredients

• FOR THE FILLING: • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1 medium onion, finely chopped • 1 small green bell pepper, cored and finely chopped • 4 garlic cloves, chopped • 1 medium ripe tomato, peeled, seeded, and finely chopped • 1 teaspoon each paprika, cumin, and salt • 1/4 teaspoon each red pepper flakes and pepper • 3/4 pound lean ground beef • 1 tablespoon flour • 1/2 cup chicken broth • FOR THE DOUGH: • 2 (15-ounce) cans hominy, drained • 6 ounces Monterey Jack, shredded • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter at room temperature • 2 eggs plus 1 egg yolk • 1 teaspoon each yellow mustard, baking powder, and hot sauce • 1/2 teaspoon salt FOR THE ASSEMBLY: • 10 (10- by 12-inch) sheets parchment paper and 10 (30inch) lengths kitchen twine

Instructions 1. First, prepare the filling. Heat the oil in a medium-size skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and pepper and cook, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables soften, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook 1 minute more. Stir in the tomato and continue cooking until a sauce has formed, about 5 minutes. Stir in the paprika, cumin, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper. Add the beef to the mixture and cook, breaking it into smaller pieces, until the meat loses its pink color, about 5 minutes. Stir in the flour and cook for 2 minutes more. Add the chicken broth and continue cooking, stirring often, until the mixture thickens, about 5 minutes. Remove the filling from the heat and let it cool.

2. Make the dough. Put the hominy in a food processor and pulse it until it's smooth, scraping down the sides as necessary, about 1-1/2 minutes. Add the cheese and butter and pulse until well blended, about 30 seconds more. Add the eggs and the yolk and pulse again. Add the mustard, baking powder, salt, and hot sauce and process until a light, fluffy dough has formed. Transfer the dough to a cake pan, spread it over the bottom, and divide it into 10 portions. 3. To assemble each tamale, place half a portion of dough in the center of a sheet of parchment paper. Flatten the dough into a 3- by 5-inch rectangle, then spread 1/4 cup of filling onto the center of the rectangle. Cover the filling with the other half of the dough and pat it down. Tightly fold the parchment paper around the tamale and secure it with. 4. Fit each of two large pots with a steaming basket or colander. Add water to each pot, filling it to just below the bottom of the basket. Remove the baskets and bring the pots of water to a boil. 5. Loosely arrange five tamales in each basket, leaving space for steam to circulate as the tamales cook. When the water is boiling in each pot, set a basket inside and cover the pot with a clean kitchen towel. Top the towel with a tightly fitting lid and steam the tamales, replacing water as needed (see our "Coin Trick" below), until they are firm to the touch, about 30 to 40 minutes. Use tongs to remove the tamales from the baskets (a parent's job). Let the tamales cool slightly before serving with your favorite salsa. Makes 10 tamales.

Five Minutes for Your Face

IF you think you need to dedicate all your time to applying make-up, think again. While a perfectly prepped face takes time, effort and patience, you can freshen up your face in five minutes with this handy guide to simple beauty. Here's how:

tion, go for the ever-trusted black mascara. Choose your mascara according to the effect you want, however a simple, feathered effect is best of a no-fuss look that looks natural.

Cleanse, tone and moisturise

This should be as much a routine as brushing your teeth in the morning and evening. Good looking skin starts with good skincare, and no matter how much makeup you buy, if your skin is in a bad condition, it will show right through your makeup.

Double up with moisturiser

A tinted moisturiser is a great option to use if your skin is in a good condition. Apply all over your face instead of using a standard moisturiser and if you need more cover up, use foundation only to the areas of your face that need it. Don't forget the golden rule: blend, blend, blend.

Conceal the deal

If you have any blemishes or skin imperfections, cover them up with a suitable concealer. Apply concealer after your foundation, using a concealer brush and dab with your fingertips to ensure it is blended in. A

small dab of powder will help to seal the concealer in and prevent it from lifting.

Brighten up

Apply highlighter to key areas of your face. This will prevent you from looking too drab and washed out. Highlighting pencils and powders can be used and should be applied just under the eyebrows (for that perked up arch), on the inner corners of the eyes (for that extra bit of sparkle), as well as over the tops of your cheekbones (for some simple prettiness).

of your cheeks. Use light strokes to blend the colour evenly and remember to dust off your brush before applying colour. This will help to ensure that you don't overdo it. You can always add more colour later.

Living with Asthma ASTHMA is a common disease of the respiratory system affecting the airways that carry air to and from the lungs. During an asthmatic attack, the airways become inflamed causing a build up of mucous which in turn make the airways narrow leading to breathing difficulties characterized by a distinct wheeze associated with people suffering from asthma.

Love those lips

CAUSES OF ASTHMA

Tie the whole look together by applying a quick slick of lip gloss to your pout. You can further define your lips prior to your gloss application; however, avoid the thick lined lip effect. Instead, define only your cupids bow and lower, middle portion of your lip with a suitable liner and blend.

Although the exact cause of asthma is not known, studies have shown that several factors can lead to the outbreak of asthma. These factors include: hereditary or genetic factors such as a family history of asthma, eczema or any type of allergy; air pollutants such as smoke and dust; household allergens such as house dust, feathers, and animal fur; smoking, studies have shown that children whose parents smoke are more likely to develop asthma in the long run; emotions; infections such as chest infections or common cold; certain drugs; and exercises. Asthma can also be triggered by many factors such as sudden changes in weather especially dust storms; strenuous exercises or other physical activities; smoke from burning wood, plastics or tobacco; laughing or crying loudly; strong odours from perfumes, cleaning agents, deodorants, and chemical fumes; and food preservatives.

Get in line

Blush up

Use a brown eyeliner pencil to define the lower lids and upper lash line and blend the colour with a smudge brush. If you feel you are too white, a light sweep of a pale pink or beige eye shadow applied before the liner might be an option to consider.

A pop of colour will help to bring your face to life. Using a blusher brush, smile and apply a small amount of blush or rouge on the apple

Finish the eyes with two coats of brown mascara, or for more depth and defini-

ASTHMA SYMPTOMS Asthma presents with early warning signs that happen just before or at the very beginning of an asthmatic attack. These signs are usually not very severe, but if recognised early can prevent a full blown asthmatic attack. These signs include: shortness of breath; feeling tired or weak during exercises; frequent coughing especially at night; signs of a cold or allergy such as running nose, itchy eyes, sneezing and sore throat. Severe asthma attack presents with coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness and an inability to talk in sentences without stopping for breath. Still not everyone with asthma has the same symptoms all the time. Symptoms present differently at different times, and vary from one asthma attack to another. Some people with asthma may go for extended periods without any symptoms. Others may suffer from asthmatic attacks every day. In addition, some people may only have asthma during strenuous exercises, or when suffering from a viral chest infection.

WAYS TO PREVENT ASTHMA

It is generally believed that many asthma attacks are reactions to certain triggers, so the best way to prevent an asthmatic attack is to identify individual triggers and avoid them. However, certain irritants tend to worsen asthma symptoms in most asthma sufferers. These include tobacco smoke, dust mites, cold air, chemical fumes, spores, pollen and strong emotions such as anger. l Place covers on pillows and bed covers on mattress to reduce dust mites. lReplace carpets with vinyl floor covers or hard wood floors. If this is not possible on all floors in your home, consider doing so in the bedrooms. lAvoid exposing your chest to cold air, and keep warm during the cold season. lAvoid smoke and fumes from cigarettes, burning plastics, cleaning agents etc. lMost importantly, always have an inhaler, and anti allergy medication at home. World's daftest car names ANYONE who has travailed the path of rock stardom knows exactly how difficult it is to find a good name. Would Kurt Cobain have become as influential had he decided kept Nirvana's original name, Fecal Matter? Perhaps not. Mind you, Hootie and the Blowfish have done all right for themselves... So it is with cars. It's a fine line between memorable and just plain stupid. The following fall firmly into the latter camp.

Suzuki Cappuccino

Kia pro_cee'd

Picked partly because it's a sub editor's worst nightmare, but mostly because it's plain ridiculous. Firstly, it should be capitalised because it's a proper noun; secondly, there's the superfluous underscore; thirdly, there's the superfluous apostrophe; fourthly, it sounds daft. Decent car though.

Ford Pinto

Any car that allows you to legitimately use the phrase "this is my Fairlady" gets our vote (assuming it is actually your car and you've not stolen it, that is). That said, it's a joke that will wear thin more quickly than saying "you are the weakest link" did. Then all you're left with is a car with a silly name.

Mazda Bongo Friendee Mazda's answer to the Volkswagen Type 2 camper van was first introduced in 1966, but it took until 1995 for the Friendee to arrive. We once saw a fly poster advertising the services of a man called Bongo Friendee, offering jazz drum lessons for ÂŁ7.50 an hour. Bongo Brawny was a fitness instructor (another genuine variant).

Back in 1991, way before there were four Starbucks on every street, a Nescafe with froth on top was as exotic as hot beverages got. So, what better way to add pizzazz to a tiny Japanese convertible than calling it Cappuccino? GM cancelled the Vauxhall Bovril as soon as the Cappuccino appeared, though rumour has it an Opel Ovaltine is still being developed for the German market.

Daihatsu Naked

Imagine a Skoda Yeti but much smaller and without any exterior body panels. You've more or less got the Daihatsu Naked. Its exposed bolts and door hinges were supposed to make it look rough and ready, but instead they made it look like an abandoned kit car.

Nissan Fairlady

All kinds of slang exist to describe the male and female genitalia, as you're no doubt aware. Usually it's not too difficult to avoid using one of these slang words as the name of your car - but what about foreign languages? Well, Ford USA evidently missed the telegram from Ford Portugal in 1970 that said, 'Pinto means penis over here'. Oops.

Volkswagen Thing The Thing was a modified VW Type 82 Kubelwagen sold in America from 1969, and looks sort of like a Mini Moke with a convertible fabric roof. As car names go it's about as lazy as you can get, although we suspect it was so named because Texans struggled with the word 'Kubelwagen'.

Mitsubishi Carisma This car couldn't have been named less appropriately if it was called the Mitsubishi Awesum. Trying to attach the enigmatic quality of charisma to a car this dull is one thing, but spelling it without the 'h' is quite another. The only thing it would have been acceptable to remove the 'H' from in the late Nineties was 'Steps'.

Volkswagen Touareg Touareg, if you can pronounce it, isn't too bad a name in most parts of the country. Go to Newcastle, though, and you'll find yourself at the mercy of every Geordie that wonders why you've bought a new 'toe rag' - a toe rag being the lowest form of human life up north. Don't feel so cool in your big SUV now, do you?

DOH! A DRIVER pulled up beside a rundown farmhouse. He got out and knocked at the door. A very old woman answered the door, and he asked her for directions to Defynnog. "Don't know," the woman said. He got back in his car and pulled away. Then he heard voices. He looked in his rearview mirror and saw the woman and an equally old man waving for him to come back. So he made a U- turn and drove up to them. "This is my husband," the old woman said. "He doesn't know how to get to Defynnog either."

Police officers who copped it USING exhaustive searches of the internet, we've unearthed some of the most high-profile cases of police officers receiving punishment for motoring offences or being accused with no case being proved (there is no suggestion of wrongdoing in the latter cases). The payback for those who were punished ranged from points to bans and even jail terms.

Jeremy Lowe – 37mph

DETECTIVE inspector Jeremy Lowe received three points for doing 37mph in a 30mph when he claimed he was rushing home for a bath after dealing with a dead body. Lowe already had nine points on his licence from previous speeding offences when he was caught in August 2003. Under totting-up rules, he would now have 12 points and an autonmatic ban, but he escaped disqualification on this occasion.

Sir John Evans – 66mph SIR John Evans (pictured), former chief constable of Devon and Cornwall, was fined £500 for driving at 66mph in the A30's 40mph zone in November 2003. He pleaded guilty and was also given six points on his licence. At the time, he already had three points taking his total to nine. An automatic ban is enforced at 12 points.

David Mayes – 73mph

DAVID Mayes, a copper who gave a thumbs-up sign on two 999 calls as he drove through a speed camera, was banned

for six months. Mayes, driving a Peugeot 307 patrol car (pictured), was also fined £400 after admitting driving without due care and attention. He had been clocked at 68mph and 73mph in a 40mph zone in July 2007 in Sheffield.

Helen Chamberlain – 79MPH

NOTTS Police Superintendent Helen Chamberlain (pictured) was caught speeding at 79mph in a 50mph zone on the A6097 bypass near Oxton in July 2009. She was initially given a verbal warning by the officer who stopped her but a more senior copper asked the Crown Prosecution Service to review the case and she was given six points and a £1,500 fine.

Meredydd Hughes – 90mph

MEREDYDD Hughes (pictured), former chair of roads policing at the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO), was banned for 42 days after being caught at 90mph in a

29

60mph in his Audi. The offence occurred on the A5 near Wrexham in May 2007. He was also fined £350.

Meurig Jones, Geraint Jones and Ronald Winterson – 110mph

THE above trio of police officers were banned from driving for 28 days and fined £380 each after admitting riding their motorbikes at 110mph on the 60mph-limit A470 in north Wales. They were caught in June 1999 when their force was in the middle of a high-profile motorcycle safety campaign.

Colin Yates – 110mph

POLICE driving instructor Colin Yates (pictured left) pleaded guilty to speeding at 110mph in his Peugeot 206 on the M1 in April 2005. He claimed he was speeding to allow his girlfriend a good night's sleep before work in the morning. Yates was banned for two months and fined £265.

PC Mark Milton – 159mph IN ONE of the most high-profile police speeding cases, PC Mark Milton (pictured) from Shropshire was cleared of dangerous driving and speeding at 159mph in his unmarked Vauxhall Vectra patrol car on the M54 in December 2003. The court heard he was an advanced driver and was familiarising himself with the car. He was caught by the patrol car's onboard camera.

Super Stevie steps into the breach ENTERTAINMENT changes a lot out here on the Costa Blanca. Artists retire or go back to their homelands - some really great talent is being missed. The likes of Jack Clayton, Charles Cole, BJ Stevens, Kinni Lee and Andrea Marshall all left and this year Jo Sutherland and Cathy Carson have both retired. I’m sure there are plenty of others I have missed out, too - but then we are always getting new talent of all ages which is great. I met quite a few new faces at the charity show last week, including Dave E Moss, Samantha Jones and a great guy called Stevie who is a professional guitarist/ vocalist and has worked for six years on the Costa Blanca. And I had never heard of him

before! Stevie is a professional entertainer who has served his apprenticeship in the larger clubs of North England, the Midlands and Scotland and this is reflected in his confident stage presence and easy-going manner with the audience. Trust me I’m from South Yorkshire and have been in quite a few clubs up north myself. If that is where he started, he can cope with any crowd!!!! He is very popular because he plays and sings a wide variety of music covering most styles. There’s always something for everyone and what I like about him is that you can see he enjoys himself on stage as he’s always smiling and laughing and encouraging the audience to join in with a sing-along. If you ask him what his favourite kind of music is he will tell you ‘anything with a bit of guitar in!’ He considers his Dire Straits songs to be a crowd pleaser at his gigs, however ballads aren’t left out either and after doing a fantastic rendition of ‘Sultans of Swing’ he can go into ‘Hello’ by Lionel Richie and always get the audience back on their feet with his fine vocals. He changes his styles all night so people never get bored, switching between Johnny Cash, Garth Brookes, Eric Clapton, ZZ Top, the Shadows, Chris Rea and even to the Drifters plus loads more classics. He also does what he calls Free and Easy sessions, where he lets members of the audience come up and sing if it’s something they have always fancied doing. And he will do

some backing on the guitar for them!. Stevie plays quite often at Tony G’s in Torettas II, so make sure you pop in sometime to see his show. Also this week I have been talking to the guys at Ticketplanner and they have some fantastic shows coming up in the next couple of months. In September they have the brilliant Michael Jackson Tribute all the way from his sell-out West End Show. That’s happening on the 18th and then on the 30th they have ‘A Night with the Stars’ - a Multi Tribute Night with five top entertainers all in one show. This will hopefully be earning money for a great local charity too. I think my personal favourite up coming show will be in October, when they are holding the biggest ladies night around with top male strippers and great warm-up act - hopefully with me in their changing rooms doing their make-up! As soon as I have more details of these shows, I will let you guys know. If you’re a bar or an entertainer and want to appear in the gig guide or have any events coming up that you would like me to tell everyone about, then please contact me by email on mandy@starsinbars.org or call me on 685302529 or just visit my website www.starsinbars.org

Horoscopes By Pandora Aries March 21 - April 19 Spreading lies about colleagues or friends may see dwindling relationships with those around you. And, yes, of course I know that's obvious - but you're the one who's going to do it! Money is a source of evil you can't do without. Credit card companies may seize on your lack of self-control.

The menace of gambling Dear Rose, Please help me as I am at my wits end not knowing what to do.We have been living in Spain for four years and I am very happy here. I have made a lot of friends and enjoy a good social life. My husband on the other hand is not as gregarious as me and does not have the desire to meet new people. As I am out a lot I did not realise that he has started to gamble over the internet. If I come in unexpectedly he closes the door and turns the computer off. Recently we received a bank statement and I was horrified to see the amounts he has been spending. We are not wealthy and cannot afford to lose these kind of amounts. I cannot tell my friends about this so please try and help.

Taurus April 20 - May 20 Today is not your lucky day. It's tomorrow instead! So that's something to look forward to whilst your picking up your teeth with your broken arm. Old wives tales aren't smutty recollections of sexual conquests. Try to absorb plants into your skin in order to make yourself into some kind of Marvel Super Hero.

Gemini May 21 - June 20 Although 9/11 still makes you feel like crap, stop moaning on about it. Shouting "30 milligrams, STAT!" in a crowded place is probably not going to win you any friends today. Take a coat today as you'll need it if it rains or becomes slightly colder than usual.

A fat chance of happiness

Waiting for important email will take precedent over waiting for junk mail for the first time today. Although you will still be interested when you get an email declaring "George Bush falling over!!1". You will be plagued by happy people, but don't be swayed by them, stay miserable.

Leo July 23 - August 22 You will be glad of a loved one's ability to almost painlessly remove splinters from your backside. The medical degrees you claim you possess were not worth the 70 euros you paid for them through PayPal. Remember that water dissolves alien beasts and some witches.

Virgo August 23 - September 22 Correlating facts is an awesome responsibility. Are you sure you're up to it? When the fish wander home cooking gently, who'll be there to open the froth?

Libra September 23 - October 22 Hobbies may have to take a back seat this week as your spleen dissolved into your gastric juices. The colours you see around you are intended to give you an idea of three dimensional space. Close your eyes and you become a dangerous walking buffoon.

Scorpio October 23 - November 21 Most of your ideas will turn out to be excellent ones today. Avoid having too many ideas, otherwise you may fall from your station. If you can fit in this week, you'll know that your work is done. For what it's worth, today is going to be very short. Which is a very good thing for you.

Sagittarius November 22 - December 21 All that you are may be called into question today when someone calls you a "nancy". The morning will be full of fun and sunshine. Kissing horses in an otherwise empty paddock is fair game today. Enjoy yourself and try not to go too wild.

Capricorn December 22 - January 19 You are at a point in your life where you feel you are only there to serve. So get moving! Serve away! Don't let others stifle your creativity. It's alright to make paintings out of their droppings. Massaging figures is something that both Accountants and Masseurs do. But they are NOT the same thing. Honestly.

Aquarius January 20 - February 18 The perceived wisdom of freaks will today begin to all-of-a-sudden make a great deal of sense. Cups of tea and coffe will start to rack up around your desk today as you try to get everything done under the heady influence of a bucket of caffeine.

Pisces February 19 - March 20 The day's events will make you want to move abroad. Complete the sentence: "My day will be really crap today because my boss will find out that I surf the internet for ________ hours daily."

WHAT’S ON THE TELLY..?

If you must go indoors this week (escaping the heat maybe?) at least there’s a great line-up on TV and with TV listings you’ll get to catch the best programmes all week - as ever!

The Rob Brydon Show

John Bishop's Britain

Grumpy Guide to Food

Saturday 30 July 9:10pm - 9:40pm BBC1 New series. Former England cricketer Andrew Flintoff joins the host for his entertainment show which delves into subjects and themes that touch everyone's lives. Filmed in front of an audience in Manchester, the programme features stand-up, sketches and real-life stories from the British public and celebrities.

Sunday 31 July 10:00pm - 11:00pm BBC2 Famous faces discuss their leastfavourite things about modern cuisine, including celebrity chefs, the rise of food allergies and the price of organic crops. Featuring contributions by Neil Morrissey, Mark Radcliffe, Shappi Khorsandi, John Moloney, Sarah Parish, John Thomson, Mark Steel, Ronni Ancona, Alistair McGowan, Russell Kane, Shobna Gulati, Jon Culshaw and Katy Brand.

Friday 29 July10:00pm - 10:30pm BBC2 Rob Brydon's cheerful dismantling of the chat-show format continues. After a chinwag with the audience, culminating in a couple being presented with a tin of biscuits for their anniversary, Brydon welcomes Bill Bailey. He's not plugging anything, and Brydon barely interviews him at all before moving on to musical japes: a punked-up show tune, a fantastic Elvis cover with Bailey on Swiss cowbells and, later, a massive horn.

Horrible Bosses (2011) R 98 min - Comedy | Crime - 16 September 2011 (Spain) Three friends conspire to murder their awful bosses when they realise they are standing in the way of their happiness. Director: Seth Gordon. Writers: Michael Markowitz (screenplay), John Francis Daley (screenplay)/ Stars: Jason Bateman, Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis NICK hates his boss, mostly because he's expected to work from before sunrise to after sunset and his boss, Mr. Harken, calls him out for being a minute late and blackmails him so he can't quit. Dale hates his boss, Dr. Julia Harris, because she makes unwelcome sexual advances when he's about to get married. But Dale is on that pesky list of child offenders so he can't quit. Kurt actually likes his job and his boss, well, up until his boss dies and the boss's coked-out, psychopathic son takes over. But who would be crazy enough to quit their jobs in such poor economic times? Instead Nick, Dale and Kurt drunkenly and hypothetically discuss how to kill their bosses, and before they know it, they've hired a murder consultant to help them pull off the three deeds.

Did You Know? Vince Vaughn, Owen Wilson, Matthew McConaughey, Dax Shepard, Ashton Kutcher, Paul Rudd, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jeff Bridges, and Tom Cruise were all rumoured for roles at some point. While director Seth Gordon encouraged most actors to improvise their lines in various scenes, Jennifer Aniston stated she did not need to because her lines were "beautifully choreographed". Jennifer Aniston wore a brown wig to make her character a brunette and more oversexed, a departure from her usual lighter roles.

The Ninth Gate

Monday 01 August 9:00pm - 11:45pm Channel 5 This largely successful return to the horror genre by Roman Polanski features sardonic wit, subtle suspense tricks and razor-sharp irony. Johnny Depp plays the rare books expert hired by billionaire Frank Langella to authenticate his copy of an ancient tome that was supposedly written in conjunction with the Devil.

THE INTERNET ROMANCE SCAM Tonight a crisply told, touching story about British women who have fallen for a confidence trick based on internet dating. It's one of many scams perpetrated by fraudsters in Nigeria, who first strike up an online relationship under an assumed identity, then skilfully parlay that into an appeal for money.

DIY SOS: THE BIG BUILD New series. Nick Knowles and the team head to Cirencester, Gloucestershire, to help the Beasleys finish work on an incomplete extension to their ex-council house. The project has taken a back seat to ill health and loss of work over the past five years, leaving the family on the brink of despair, so local traders, members of the community and guest designer Charlie Luxton are enlisted to help with the build.

GREEN FOR GO GO GO! Record-breaker Cav is triple tops

BRITAIN’S Mark Cavendish secured the green points jersey after winning the final stage of the Tour de France while Australian Cadel Evans sealed overall victory. Cavendish, 26, took his career total to 20 stage wins as he became the first cyclist ever to take three successive victories on the Champs-Elysees and the first Brit to clinch the green jersey. His HTC-Highroad team came to the fore on the final lap and put their lead-out train into motion to deliver their sprinter to the line for the biggest victory of his career. Edvald Boasson Hagen (Team Sky) and Andre Greipel (Omega Pharma-Lotto) rounded out the podium places on the stag., A delighted Cavendish said afterwards: "It worked out exactly as we wanted it to; we wanted an escape group to go, with ideally someone in there. Then we put the whole team on the front for the last 5km. The guys timed it perfect.

"Going round the last corner there was a block headwind finish and I left it until 170 metres to go and knew it would be tough. But I just gave it everything to the line. I jumped and noticed Edvald was there so I just kicked again and accelerated away. "I'm so, so happy and incredibly proud of the guys. It's a great way to finish the Tour. "This green jersey means so much, we've worked so hard for it. They changed the rules this year and, while it's worked out, we really had to fight for it. But it's so, so worth it. ‘’I've been trying to get this for the last few years and it's a super-emotional day for me."

Cadel, wizard of Oz CADEL EVANS savoured the taste of champagne and his day in the yellow jersey as he became Australia's first Tour de France champion. The 34-year-old BMC Racing team leader secured victory when he turned a 57-second deficit

into a lead of one minute 34 seconds in Saturday's 42.5-kilometre time-trial in Grenoble. That left Evans ahead of Andy and Frank Schleck (both Leopard Trek), who became the first brothers on the Tour podium in Paris. Wearing the yellow jersey for the first time on this year's Tour, Evans rolled around the 95km, 21st stage from Creteil to the Champs-Elysees in a celebratory procession, but not without a hitch. The two-time Tour runner-up had to swap his special yellow bike for the team issue black and red version 11km into the stage.

Hamilton’s conquest LEWIS HAMILTON won the German Grand Prix on Sunday after a tight battle with Fernando Alonso and Mark Webber at the Nurburgring. The McLaren driver scored his second victory of the season having taken the lead at the start before then losing it to Red Bull driver Webber during the first round of pit stops. However, Hamilton regained the lead after pitting for a second time just past half distance and remained there for the remainder of the race's 60 laps. It was an aggressive, yet faultless, display from the Englishman, who has come in for plenty of criticism since his win in China back in April - but who served notice of his intent on Saturday with a fine qualifying performance. Alonso also got ahead of Webber during the second round of stops, with around three seconds at most separating the trio as they fought each other during the most crucial phase of the race. But his home Grand Prix proved a disappointment for defending world champion Sebastian Vettel, who spun early on and also relied on smart pit work from Red Bull to get him into fourth place ahead of Ferrari's Felipe Massa. The top five finishers all ran three-stop strategies, with Force India's Adrian Sutil the leading two stopper in sixth place. McLaren's Jenson Button had also been running a twostop strategy, but retired just past the halfway point after his car developed a mechanical problem. Mercedes GP duo Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher finished seventh and eighth respectively, while Sauber's Kamui Kobayashi and Renault's Vitaly Petrov rounded out the point scorers.

$487,000 giveaway AI MIYAZATO clinched her first golf title of the year at the Evian Masters on Sunday - and pledged to share her prize money with the people still suffering in the aftermath of the disasters back home in Japan. Miyazato shot a two-under par 70 to protect her two-shot lead and hold off a surge from Stacy Lewis of the United States. The 26-year-old Miyazato will now donate at least part of her $487,500 first prize to the relief efforts in Japan. "I haven't decided yet whether it will be all of the amount or some of it," she said. "This year I was playing for Japan." Miyazato played with consistency throughout the tourna-

ment, dropping shots on just five of the 72 holes overall and finishing with a 15-under total of 273. Lewis also shot a 70 to finish two shots back in second, with a trio of players another stroke behind.

Stoner yanks US title AUSTRALIAN Casey Stoner roared to his fifth MotoGP victory of the season in front of 52,000 passionate fans at the Red Bull US Grand Prix in California. Yamaha Factory rider Jorge Lorenzo had a great launch from pole position, leading into turn one with the three Repsol Hondas tracking close behind, led by Dani Pedrosa. But behind Lorenzo, Stoner picked up steam, first passing his team-mate Pedrosa on lap 18 of the 32-lap race, then ticking off fast laps to reel in the race leader. The Australian caught the Spaniard and proceeded to pressure him for several laps, finally making his move around the outside of Lorenzo and driving out of the last corner to take the lead with six laps to go. Stoner immediately put down the hammer and pulled away, crossing the finishing line with a five and a half second lead. After a poor start, local hero Ben Spies (Yamaha Factory Racing) ended the race in fourth position, the highest placed American on home turf.

Think You Can Drive? OVAL /Short Circuit racing is coming to Spain - that’s official. For those of you who didn’t spend your teenage years at circuits like Bovingdon, Wimbledon and the occasional visit to Ipswich, then here’s a bit of an insight into the action planned by Velocity Racing and Circuito Cartagena. Oval/Short Circuit racing is motor sport performed within a flat circuit of up to around 500m circumference which differs from a road course in that it turns in one direction only. And as the turns are all very fast, standard road tyres would not last long with the extreme pressures forced on them. Oval circuits can vary dramatically in length and physical layout and therefore each track presents its own unique challenges and demands on the driver. Different forms of Oval circuit racing have been around almost as long as there have been cars to race as this was and still is the simplest form of motorsport. Many categories of vehicle have been used, from the monster NASCAR V8’s of the States to the very British minstocks. Here on the Costa, Velocity Racing intend to bring a range of formulas, including 1300 Stock Cars, 2.0 Hot Rods, Lightning Rods, Junior Rods, Rookie Rods and National Hot Rods. The guys from Velocity racing will be holding a drivers meeting on August 7 at 7pm at the Meroil Garage on the Cv913 off the Ap7 junction 733 towards Callosa de Segura , with details of the circuit and a list of meeting dates.

THE REAL STORY Aguero doesn’t want to be at Man City By FREDDY JUPITER FIRST off, congratulations to Manchester City and their fans for signing the man that many, including myself, consider the best forward currently in world football. Sergio Aguero leaves Atletico de Madrid still only 23 years of age with the world at his feet. That is his dream, his ambition, to play at a football club that can guarantee European competition and titles. Atletico could not assure the player of such competition, so he moved on. But why sign - with my utmost respects - with Manchester City? Perhaps soon the REAL story behind Aguero leaving Atletico will come clean and be aired. Perhaps the player himself will go public, or a representative or a journalist will reveal the facts behind the chain of events that took Aguero to a final destination not in his plans nor wished for at all. If the objective was to make a "quantum leap" from Atletico, Manchester City (again with respects) is a sideways move, not a leap. The player has been naive, badly represented, badly advised, shown poor judgement, been lied to and betrayed. They may make a movie one day on this transfer and you may be shocked at the dark Shakespearian undertones present. l Aguero renews contract with Atletico in 2010, before becoming a "free agent", with the agreement to lower his contract release clause from €60m to €45m that he can leave the club the following season. This way Aguero gets his wish nd Atletico can get money which would not have been possible as a free-agent. l Aguero gets a verbal agreement that he can go "to any club of your desire". Not written. First mistake! lIn the January 2011 winter market, Real Madrid approach Atletico de Madrid and offer to pay €45m for Aguero. His club says no, to avoid a fan backlash during a period were President Gil Marin and others are under fire for the team’s poor performances and even threatened with court action by a sector of their fans over club ownership issues l Real Madrid (I cannot prove this at all) tell Aguero to be patient and that they will go after him at the end of the season. Some media observers say that there is a "verbal agreement" between Real and Aguero, not written. Second mistake! l Aguero puts in a superb

second half of the year, single-handedly saving Atletico to put the club in a Euro position. He feels he has done his part. At season end, he announces unilaterally that he wishes to leave the club, that the club have to do as they have promised, and that he has done his part and is not coming back. This takes the club and the Atletico fan base completely by surprise as the player disappears to Argentina for duties with his country in the Copa America tournament. Third mistake! Too risky a move without something solid. l However, apparently advised by his representatives (all three later split up in an in-house dispute), Real Madrid assured them that they would now act and called for the player to make a "strategic" public move. l Real did not expect or calculate the fierce reaction from Atletico and their under-fire President. The club "rooked" itself against any selling to Real Madrid, it became a prohibited thought. Here Atletico go against the promise of allowing Aguero to go to "any club of his choice". The club’s reaction was so fierce that it is said (but cannot be proved) that President Marin begged his opposite number at the Bernabeu, Florentino Perez, not to pay the 45m contract release clause because he could not negotiate and risk be humiliated in front of the fans. Apparently, Perez accepts not to enter into a ‘war’ with Atletico’s city neighbours. lReal Madrid began then to look at Brazilian Neymar and, "leaving options open", tell Aguero to hang tight and see if "things cool down". l With Aguero nervous, along with his representatives, the latter fly around Europe putting Aguero on sale. Why? Create a Plan B and put pressure on Real Madrid to make a move, thinking they would lose out on Aguero. l Juventus asked ,

Serene Saurine: Las Vegas without people SAURINES, near Roldan, is a desert course that is apparently based on a course near Las Vegas. The course may be similar but that’s where it ends, writes BOB GALLARD of San Javier Golf Society. There are almost no practice facilities and no bar for a drink before or after the game. In fact the only place you can sit down after your round is in your car. I’ve been to Las Vegas and there are millions of people around and the golf courses are packed and you have to book in advance to play. At Saurines you have to look hard to see anyone else on the course. These are not really bad points because its nice to have a golf course all to yourselves. We played a Texas Scramble on Wednesday in perfect weather conditions.

THE WINNERS: Ian Smith, Paul Hamlin and Roy Herbert

but did not have the money l Real Madrid did not make a move l FC Barcelona had shown interest early in the season and they were approached. But Barça do have enough budget to get Aguero and say they cannot buy l Real Madrid did not make a move lChelsea FC asked, but smelled something rotten as they took a step back l Real Madrid did not make a move l Manchester City saw a chance, asked, and put the money upfront. All 45m of it. l Real Madrid still did not make a move l Aguero held out, waiting for a last-minute rescue by Real Madrid, and it did not come Sergio Aguero and his people had driven themselves into a dead-end street. Their continuous public comments, inappropriate behaviour and disrespect to the Atletico fans - and, most importantly, the non-fulfilment of the verbal promise from Real Madrid, has forced the player to end up at Manchester City (again with respect), against all his desires. It has been said (cannot be proved) that Argentina team-mate and Man City player Carlos Tevez explained to Aguero all the "disadvantages" of going to City and adapting to the English lifestyle for a Latin. In fact, Aguero said publicly that he wished to stay in Spain as he had just bought a multi-million house in Madrid to expand the family. In conclusion, this is a tragic story for Sergio Aguero. A story of lies, betrayal and dirty tactics that could be made into a movie on how the football world operates. The player now has no choice but to accept his badly-managed fate and adapt to the circumstances with a smile and good words. But I hope this doesn’t turn out to be another Tevez story for City.

COSTA CHEAPER!

Premier League giants ready to put Elche, Hercules under microscope STEVE BOTT reports LOCAL teams Elche and Hercules could benefit as English clubs look to Spain and elsewhere after the revelation that foreign players are cheaper to sign than the best from UK club academies. Former Manchester United player Chris Casper, who is now working to bring more home-grown players through into top Premier League teams has told of the increased interest in young players from abroad.

Over the past 12 years, Arsenal and Manchester United have been the top two clubs for bringing through home-grown players from the youth academies into the first team but money is holding back development in a big way.
