Silence Over Bar Offer

A

n offer to reopen Orihuela Costa’s beach bars has been made to Orihuela council, as the row continues over the closing down of the area’s 11 beach bars, pending the advertising of a new contract to operate the bars. Previous franchise holder Chiringuitos del Sol has offered to reopen its outlets, ahead of the contract award, describing the move as something in the “public interest”, but that offer appears to have been met with silence from the council. Meanwhile, chemical loos provided by the council have appeared at La Zenia and Cabo Roig beaches, as visitors have been scrambling around to find somewhere to perform their basic bodily functions, as a result of the closures. Besides providing refreshments, the bars offered toilets, sunloungers, chairs, and umbrellas, but this all ended

over a fortnight ago, when they were told to close down. This was because the contract with Chiringuitos was deemed to have ended, with a full extension option not being taken up, because of claimed concerns over the contract award and a judicial investigation into it, which to this date has brought no legal action whatsoever. A public row then ensued between Orihuela politicians of different parties, as to the exact end date of the previous contract and who was responsible for any extensions or terminations, in addition to consequences for tourism in the area. Chiringuitos added that they may well seek financial compensation from Orihuela council, as they had planned and budgeted for their bars to run between February and June (the end of the previous contractual period), and had presented a plan to do so back in

December, as asked for by beaches councillor, Luisa Boné. In a statement, the company said that they were willing to talk to Orihuela council, and criticised the way they had handled the whole issue. A tender for a new beach bar contract is still being put together by Orihuela’s contracts department, but nothing has been advertised as The Courier went to press, meaning that realistically, unless some kind of interim deal is done with Chiringuitos, the Orihuela Costa beach bars will be closed for most, if not all of

June. Local groups have had plenty to say about the matter including the Federación de Asociaciones de Orihuela Costa (FAOC) who blamed Ciudadanos councillor Boné, and Partido Popular contracts councillor, Paco Sáez, in addition to their council officers, for what had happened. FAOC’s Tomás Moreno said that "this is all bad for tourism and the beaches, and the council should get services back to normal as soon as possible”. The CLARO political party has called on Orihuela mayor, Emilio Bascuñana, to take “urgent measures to solve the problem and to sort out the political and legal responsibilities for the matter”. The party also stated that since inspections for the coveted Blue Flag awards take place in May, the beaches are set to lose them, due to their lack of facilities. Orihuela has a total of 11 blue flags, nine of which are for the beaches, putting it second in the list of municipalities across Spain for the number of awards.

A British holidaymaker faces 13 years behind bars after a jury found him guilty of stabbing a British chef to death at a Villamartin Plaza bar in January 2016, whilst the bar owner was also convicted of concealing a crime. A four-day Alicante Provincial Court hearing in Elche last week convicted Benjamin Da Costa, aged 30, of killing 40-year-old father of one, Scott Waring, by slashing his neck with a glass during a bar brawl. Former army medic Scott, 40, who did four tours of Northern Ireland, died within minutes of being attacked after the row with Da Costa, who fled north to Altea, before voluntarily reporting to the local Guardia Civil barracks the following day. Prosecutors stated during the trial that Mr. Waring bled to death after the attack with a 'glass or pint jug' having damaged his jugular vein and carotid artery, as previously reported by The Courier. The jury rejected Da Costa’s defence that it was an accident and any mitigating circumstances put forward by his solicitor that he

that he had lied to the Guardia, including his initial claim that the fatal fight had taken place outside, and not in his bar. Da Costa and Williams are scheduled to be sentenced in the next few days, with Williams likely to get a suspended prison sentence on the recommendation of prosecutors, who have stated they want no change to the 13 years for Da Costa. The victim, Scott Waring, had a three-year-old daughter called Anais at the time that he was killed, which would also jointly be paid by Da Costa and Williams. The UK address of Da Costa has not been made public.

was not in control of his faculties because of the amount of alcohol and drugs that he had consumed. Witnesses said that Da Costa did not seem to be suffering as result of alcohol and drug consumption. Simon Williams, owner of The Hub Sports Bar, was also found guilty of trying to cover up the crime by the nine-strong jury. Williams was accused in the indictment of clearing up the broken glass and telling the Guardia Civil called to the scene that the incident had happened outside his bar 'to help Da Costa and hinder the investigation.' He admitted in the trial

One of Europe’s biggest collection of historic aircraft could be heading to San Javier airport, once the facility closes down in favour of Corvera in the next year, and that could mean some historic sights in the air to enjoy over the Mar Menor. Spain’s defence minister, María Dolores de Cospedal, put forward the initial idea that the 44-strong collection belonging to the Fundación Infante de Orleans (FIO), should consider San Javier as a new location for its aviation museum. It has been based at Madrid’s Cuatro Vientos aerodrome since 1989 with regular fly-pasts (see photo), and now San Javier is very much in the picture, along

with rivals at Getafe and Segovia. The Air Academy at San Javier has backed the proposal, and FIO President, Carlos Valle Torralbo, says a decision will be made within a matter of weeks.

It offeres the tantalising possibility of classic fighter planes from around the world being based in the Mar Menor area, in what would be seen as a big tourist boost, following the closure of operations at San Javier.

Mayor’s Rejection

A call for San Pedro del Pinatar council to hold a public consultation over plans for the redevelopment of the famous but empty, Floridablanca spa at Lo Pagán beach, has been turned down. José Luis Ros of the Ciudadanos party wanted the San Pedro authority to get more views from residents, with opinion allegedly said to be divided as to whether the empty structure should become a restaurant or not. However, San Pedro mayor, Visitación Martínez, rejected the demand because it “wasn’t what the majority of people wanted, and that the development plans were approved unani-

mously at a council plenary meeting”. Earlier this year, Martínez said that work could start on the site before the summer, with a restaurant planned to be run on a franchise, in addition to building a museum, and restoring the spa to a bathing facility. “Not everything on the site will be a restaurant,” retorted Martínez. All that work, though, is now on hold, despite money being provided by the Murcia regional government, because the Costas authority is waiting for an environmental impact study before anything can happen, which would firstly see the dismantling of the original structure.

Windy Tuesday

Strong gusts of wind of over 150 kilometres an hour kept emergency services busy across Alicante Province on Tuesday. Fallen trees, awnings, debris and collapsed aerials were part of the logged incidents that firemen attended, with over a hundred calls being received. Many of those were in the Elche and Santa Pola areas,

plus a handful further south in the Vega Baja region. Classes at two Elche schools were suspended due to collapsed trees, whilst part of the roof at the Santa Pola sports centre was ripped off. The winds were a precursor to the heavy rain that arrived in parts of the region the following day on Wednesday.

Baron On Trial

A British drugs baron, described as 'one of the top ten most investigated criminals in Europe', has gone on trial in Alicante this week, having been arrested on the Costa Blanca five years ago. 62-year-old Brian Charrington (pictured outside court) along with his partner and son, plus six others, are accused of trying to smuggle 192 kilos of cocaine into Albir on a yacht. Charrington, a former associate of notorious gangster Curtis Warren, was arrested with his son in Calpe back in 2013. The amount of cocaine was said to be worth 12 million euro on the open mar-

ket, and the National Police described Charrington as the 'leader of an international gang of drugs smugglers.' A court embargoed bank accounts, property and other assets at the time, said to be worth around six million euro. Spain’s Drugs and Organised Crime Police Unit seized a number of luxury cars and boats, with the Unit boss stating that Charrington used his 10 villas on the Costa Blanca to provide shelter for criminal fugitives. Prosecutors are calling for Charrington to be jailed for 18 years if he is found guilty, whilst defence lawyers have

queried the use of wire-taps to get Charrington arrested. Work on getting Charrington detained started in 2010, and centred on his girlfriend, Isabelle Robert, who had a relationship with French criminal, Alain Coelier, who along with his bodyguard, was shot eight years ago in La Nucia. Charrington is well known to authorities across Europe, as well as in Spain, where he was arrested in Calpe in 1997 in possession of a shipment of four tons of hashish. He also maintains a Wikipedia page where he lists his achievements as an “international drugs dealer”.

Trouble Brewing Air-traffic controllers in Barcelona (control tower, pictured) have announced a series of strikes starting on Wednesday June 20th in protest over short-staffing, which could have a significant impact on services in and out of Alicante-Elche and San Javier airports. The industrial action is set to hit the entire western Mediterranean arc, given that the Barcelona hub manages flights from the whole of the east coast and the Balearic Islands As yet, the full list of strike dates has not been confirmed, but each strike will last for 24 hours. According to the AirTraffic Controllers' Union (USCA), 85% of the membership in Barcelona – or 255 out of 300 – have backed the strike and are expected to join in. They have opted to down tools from the third week in June in order to clash with the peak holiday season

and cause as much disruption as possible. Air-traffic controllers are calling for more staff members, having warned repeatedly that this summer could bring chaos and leave employees stretched to the limits. The air-traffic control team remains insufficient to cope, says the USCA, despite national airspace management governing body ENAIRE having opened a recruitment process for more con-

trollers. “Air-traffic controllers need a period of time to train and get settled, so even if they are taken on now, they will not be available in time for the holiday season,” USCA warns. The union says the Barcelona controllers are working extra shifts – they normally work five days on and three days off, but are having to work six days on and two days off because there are not enough of them to cover flight traffic.

Quite A Buzz

A bee colony had to be removed from a tree trunk in a Daya Nueva school on Monday. A fire crew from Almoradi arrived at the scene at the Colegio Jose María Paternina (pictured), and formed a cordon around the tree, before a bee keeper arrived to remove the colony. It’s the latest in a series of similar incidents in recent weeks across the area, with a swarm of bees removed from a Los Montesinos property at the end of last month.

Fingers Trapped A 10-year-old boy got the fright of his life on Saturday afternoon, when he got three of his fingers trapped in a toy ball vending machine. Torrevieja firefighters were called in to free him from the dispenser on La Mata’s Plaza Encarnación Puchol, after the youngster put his fingers up by the exit chute of the machine, when the ball that he paid for, did

not drop down. The fire crew smashed the glass of the machine to

end the boy’s ordeal and free him, ensuring he suffered no injuries.

A Royal First

King Felipe is set to make his first ever visit to the Vega Baja region some time next month (May), when he will attend the National Congress of Communities of Irrigators in Torrevieja, and go for lunch at Orihuela City’s Santo Domingo Diocensan school. The King’s diary is never

made official until around four or five days before his engagements, but it is believed that he will be involved in closing the Irrigators Congress at Torrevieja’s International Auditorium on Friday May 18th. The gathering is expected to attract fifteen-hundred

delegates, as well as the Valencian President, Ximo Puig. The Santo Domingo school in Orihuela is already said to be making preparations for the royal visit, with Felipe’s mother, Queen Sofia, having opened Orihuela’s Teatro Circo back in 1993.

Unwelcome Visitors

Portuguese Man O’War jellyfish have washed up ashore on Guardamar’s beaches, with six instances being recorded as The Courier went to press. Their presence in the Mediterranean has been blamed on strong westerly winds over the last few days. The Portuguese Man O’War is often called a jellyfish but is actually a species of siphonophore, a group of animals that are closely related to jellyfish. Their tentacles are loaded with coiled, barbed tubes that deliver venom capable of

paralysing and killing small fish and crustaceans. They are rarely deadly to people but can be dangerous to children, elderly people, asthmatics and people with allergies as they can cause fever, shock and respiratory distress. Sightings have been made all round the Alicante Province coast including at Arenales de Sol, Altea and in the Benidorm area, with Guardamar council advising visitors not to go into the water at local beaches.

Long Time Waiting A 54-year-old man 'stolen' from his parents at birth by nuns has been reunited with his biological mother and four siblings – who believed until the day they met him that he had been stillborn. Lawyer Enrique Vila (pictured), working for several families affected by the 'stolen baby' racket, said the Valencia man's parents had gone on to have three more children and never suspected their son might be alive and living with an adopted family. A victim of the so-called 'stolen babies' scandal, which went on between the 1930s and 1990s, the man took a DNA test and traced his mother, now aged 77. At the time of his birth in Valencia in 1964, his parents, who were 23, had a four-year-old daughter and were married, but were told by the nuns who worked as nurses, as well as their doctor, that the infant had been born dead. In many near-identical cases, the mother was unmarried and the baby was taken off her because she was considered 'loose' and undeserving, but in others, the children were simply sold to families who could not have offspring of their own, taken from completely random couples. During General Franco's dictatorship, many of the babies thought to be stolen were taken from poorer fam-

ilies or from those known to be Republican supporters, or dissenters. Enrique Vila said: - “In the 1950s and 1960s in particular, it was very common for everyone to believe what they were told by doctors and by the nuns who worked as auxiliary nurses in public hospitals. “For this reason, many women did not investigate further, nor did they concern themselves with checking that the death certificates for their babies were genuine, neither did they become suspicious when their children were buried.” Some parents were given their 'babies' in a coffin, and although many in hindsight realise this was very lightweight and may have been

empty, many others were so full of grief that they did not look inside. “Taking advantage of the credibility that the Church, and the medical profession, enjoyed at the time, many cases of deception were easy enough to carry out unnoticed, as we are starting to see now,” Vila continues. “But we have to keep in mind the principle of 'innocent until proven guilty' and we cannot go round accusing or blaming any institution, religious or public, without proof. “The fact here is that a woman believed her son had died 54 years ago and has now met him, alive, and been able to hold him in her arms for the first time.”

Facebook Saver

The daughter of a Murcia region woman saved her mother’s life, despite being

based in the Madrid area, thanks to using Facebook. The victim, said to be

aged between 45 and 50 and living in La Unión, had been suffering severe depression and cut her wrists open with a kitchen knife in the early hours of Friday morning. She then wrote on Facebook that she had done so and said her goodbyes. Her daughter, living in Madrid, saw her mother's Facebook status and immediately rang the emergency services. Police and paramedics had to break the door down to get into the house, and found the woman unconscious. She was still alive, and was taken straight to Santa Lucía University Hospital in Murcia City, where she is expected to make a full recovery.

Finding The Fallen

A team of structural engineers will enter Spain’s most controversial monument on Monday to search for the remains of four of the 34,000 civil war dead who have lain next to the body of dictator General Francisco Franco for more than half a century, unnamed but not forgotten. The basilica of the Valley of the Fallen, a hulking mausoleum 50 kilometres outside Madrid, is ostensibly dedicated to the memory of all those killed on both sides between 1936 and 1939. Only two graves are marked, however, those of Franco and José Antonio

Primo de Rivera, the founder of the Falangist party. Around them lie the bodies of tens of thousands of people, both republicans and nationalists, which were disinterred from resting places across Spain and buried anonymously in the church in an apparent attempt at reconciliation. Efforts to reclaim the remains came to nothing until 2016, when a court finally approved the exhumation of two brothers executed by Francoist forces in the early days of the war. The bodies of Manuel Lapeña, a vet, and his broth-

er Antonio, a blacksmith, were dumped in a mass grave in Calatayud, northeastern Spain and then dug up decades later and reburied in the basilica without their families’ knowledge or permission. The Benedictine abbot who presides over the Valley of the Fallen has repeatedly opposed efforts to exhume the dead, as he argues that the site’s religious status must come before its political significance, but Spain’s national heritage authority has backed the court ruling and ordered the experts to begin work.

Free To Drink

A Scottish couple have been slammed by a holidaymaker as undeserving of children after allegedly leaving their two girls with strangers while they got drunk in Mallorca. The young sisters are reported to have been left with four different families over the course of two days at the Club Palma Bay resort (pictured). One tourist who spotted the girls by themselves has told how the eldest told her she was trying to call her dad back in Scotland, according a report in the Mirror newspaper. The father is reportedly

trying to get custody of the girl who was allegedly forced to look after and feed her four-year-old sibling during the holiday last week. The mother and stepfather then spent the majority of the week at the bar or out on the street getting drunk - leaving their girls behind, according to reports. Holidaymaker Amanda Wignall said she flew out on Sunday and spotted the girls by themselves at the hotel's children's disco the same day. She claimed she asked them if they were okay and the eldest told her it was not the first time their mother

and stepfather had abandoned them on holiday. Mrs Wignall, who was with her husband and fouryear-old son, said she bumped into a friend of hers and realised that she, too, had been looking after the girls. The eldest girl was trying to call her dad in Scotland for help, Mrs Wignall said. She told the MailOnline: "One night we saw them on their own and when we eventually found the mum she was absolutely paralytic. She was so drunk she couldn't even lift her head up to speak to us, let alone string a sentence together."

A fearless group of daredevils videoed themselves base jumping from a Benidorm crane at the big Tempo building construction, as part of their sport of base jumping. One of the group, Carlos Brisceno, who has been skydiving for 19 years said that the group took advantage of the building work in the resort to show off their skills in the resort.

The 44-year-old, who 'dreamt about flying' as a child, has now completed more than 9,000 skydives and 800 base jumps. Carlos said: “There is no better feeling than flying your body like a bird. When you do it, you are 100 per cent present, there are no other thoughts in your mind. This video came about after going to a base jumping competition in the Hotel Bali

in Benidorm. “The Tempo Building is one of the tallest in the area and they were finishing it and had the crane still attached, so we decided to get on the crane and jump it. “It was a Sunday so there were no workers in the building so the party was on. We were giggling like kids from nerves and from how crazy it was. It was for sure one of my favourite jumps.”

The Yorkshire Link

Valencia region-based supermarket chain Mercadona has now launched in the UK with a trading office set up in Harrogate, North Yorkshire to handle purchases of fish from the North Sea. Mercadona, founded by Juan Roig, says that the Yorkshire office will save a considerable amount of travelling. Staff from the North Sea fish-purchasing management centre in Spain have had to fly to the UK every time they needed to sign paperwork or deal with any business issues that cropped up. But now, with the office in Harrogate – led

9

by Gavin Radcliffe - able to handle all this on site, it means Mercadona has a foot in the door in Britain and may later be able to take advantage of its presence there for future deals. Most of Mercadona's produce is locally or nationally sourced, but some of its wares have to be bought in from elsewhere if they are not available, or in scant supply, in Spain. At present, Mercadona has a network of 120 manufacturers and suppliers, and last year alone made over 17.5 billion euro in purchases, of which 85% was from producers in Spain.

Investing Tax Efficiently in Spain

11

Keith Littlewood, International Financial Adviser at Blacktower, Costa Cálida Expats from the UK coming to live in Spain often have investments such as ISAs, Tessas, PEPs or some form of National Savings. Whilst living in the UK, these investments offered excellent tax efficiency helping towards the growth of their investment. Once you live in Spain, the tax benefits offered by these tax-efficient investments disappear and any growth becomes subject to the savings tax rates applied by Hacienda. This means when doing your tax returns in Spain, you may face an unwelcome surprise in the form of a tax bill derived from the growth that these UK investments have made and where no tax has been previously deducted. This is because the double taxation treaty that exists means that you will be taxed at a rate of the difference you would have paid in Spain compared to what has already been paid by the relevant UK institution on your behalf. The amount is usually 19% in Spain, so if your ISA has increased in value by £1,000, then you can expect an extra tax bill of £190 (approx. €220) dropping in your post.

The local Blacktower office address is: 120, Avenida Dr. Artero Guirao 2C, San Pedro Del Pinatar, 30740, Murcia, Spain. Our office suite is easy to find on the main N332 through road of San Pedro del Pinatar with easy parking. If you want more information or wish to make an appointment to discuss your own situation, then call the local office on: 968 187 331 or speak to me direct on: 657 684 094 or email: keith.littlewood@blacktower fm.com

If you have made more than €6,000 in the year, then the tax rate increases even more, so you could be paying as much as 22%. There are investments available to UK expats in Spain that do have taxefficient benefits which can help you control and plan the tax payable and, with careful planning, tax can be avoided

or at least deferred. These investments are called Spanish Compliant Bonds and are provided by large institutions such as The Prudential, SEB or Old Mutual but can only be obtained through an intermediary or financial adviser to make sure the most suitable type is recommended. The Spanish Compliant Bond providers

also have a fiscal representative to Hacienda, which means you do not have to complete a Modelo 720 (asset declaration) if you hold these investments, which can also save you time and money when doing your tax returns each year and also help you avoid fines for non-declaration. If you hold in excess of €50,000 combined in all UK cash

investments like ISAs etc., then you must complete the Modelo 720. In today’s financial climate it is essential you do everything you can to make sure your money is safe and secure and what you want to transpire in the future has the best chance happening and helping your own family members.

The above information was correct at the time of preparation and does not constitute investment advice and you should seek advice from a professional adviser before embarking on any financial planning activity. So you have a new friend in your life with a gorgeous puppy but you straight away have to get down to the business of some toilet training. Initially, you will have to build your routine around your puppy's needs, and these are reliably predictable when they are very young. Puppies need to urinate immediately after waking up, so you need to be there to take your puppy straight into the garden without any delay. Eating its meal stimulates its digestive system, and puppies normally urinate within fifteen minutes of eating, and defecate within half an hour of eating. Puppies have very poor bladder control, and need to urinate at least every hour or two. They can urinate spontaneously when they get excited, so take your puppy out frequently if it has been active, playing or exploring. You may find it useful to keep a record of when your puppy eats sleeps, urinates and defecates. Repeat cue words like 'wee wees' and 'poo poos' or 'be busy' and 'be clean' while the puppy is actually urinating or defecating. Use different words for each action so that you will be able to prompt the puppy later on. Always go with your puppy onto the patio so you are there to reward and attach the cue words to the successful actions! Fortunately, puppies are creatures of habit, so as long as you introduce the garden to your puppy as its toilet area early on, you should be able to avoid most of the common pitfalls. Make sure that you do not make any of the following toilet training mistakes: • Over-feeding; feeding an unsuitable diet or giving a variety of foods; or not feeding at regular times. • Punishing the puppy for its indoor accidents, which can make it scared of toileting in front of you - even outside.

• Feeding salty foods which makes them drink more. • Using ammonia based cleaning compounds (which smell similar to urine). • Expecting the puppy to tell you when it needs to go out which is unrealistic. • Leaving the puppy on its own too long. • Mistakenly associating the words 'good girl' or 'good boy' when they toilet, as opposed to the specific cue words. Guess what could happen the next time you praise your dog? • Laziness on your part, resulting in more wees indoors than outdoors. • Leaving the puppy alone on the patio, so you are not there to reward it for going outdoors. • Submissive or excited urination on greeting (if this occurs, take your puppy outside before you greet it and tone down your greeting). • It is unfair to expect your puppy to go right through the night when it is very young. Owners appear disappointed that their young puppy will not toilet when out on a walk, yet relieves itself the second it gets back home. This is because the puppy has been taught to toilet only at home (hopefully on the patio), and being creatures of habit, they often wait until they have returned home before evacuating their bladder and/ or bowels. To break this habit, you will have to get up very early one morning (when you have plenty of time), and get your puppy out on a walk before it has had its morning wee. You should not bring it home until it has been forced to go out of desperation. If however, you are unsuccessful, and your puppy has not toileted, then take it immediately onto the patio, or you risk it relieving itself indoors.

Prison Protest

Several thousand protesters marched in northern Spain at the weekend to demand that imprisoned members of the militant Basque group ETA be moved to prisons closer to their homes. The demonstration in Bilbao on Saturday came a day after ETA made an unprecedented apology for the killings of more than 850 people during the group’s four-decade armed campaign for the Basque region’s independence from France and Spain. The group, which ceased killing in 2011, is expected to announce it is dissolving next month. Hundreds of members of ETA are kept in Spanish and French prisons, mostly outside the Basque region. The Spanish government has said that ETA’s vow to not return to violence was long overdue and would not be rewarded by easing the conditions of its members in prisons.

NO AND NEIN

Spain’s Foreign Minister, Alfonso Dastis, has refused an offer from German politicians to mediate in the dispute involving Catalunya. Dastis quickly dismissed the idea, telling the Handelsblatt business newspaper: “That’s frankly nonsense.” “Catalunya is part of Spain,” the 62-year-old said in an interview with the publication. “A mediation by third parties would be a victory for [Carles] Puigdemont, which he did not win at the polls.” The former Catalan president was arrested in Germany in late March. Earlier this month, a

German court refused to extradite the Catalan separatist leader to Spain for a rebellion charge. However, he is still facing extradition to Spain under an international arrest warrant. The court in SchleswigHolstein is currently determining whether Mr. Puigdemont can be sent to Spain over possible misuse of public funds. Meanwhile, the Spanish government is ready to negotiate with Catalonia as long as the terms of the Spanish Constitution are upheld, Mr. Dastis said. But the former Catalan regional president Mr. Puigdemont

will not have any part in the talks, Mr. Dastis stressed. “He violated the law, he abused the Catalan society for his own purposes and fled justice,” said the foreign minister. “And now he prevents his own followers from forming a new government because he only proposes presidential candidates who are legally biased and cannot take office. This is not someone you can bargain with.” Nonetheless, he is convinced that the European Union stands behind Spain in the matter: “We protect the values on which the EU is founded – democracy and the rule of law.”

Window Riddle

A patient plunged to his death from an eighth-floor window at a hospital in northern Spain. The incident happened at Gijon’s Cabueñes Hospital (pictured) on Sunday morning, with the circumstances unclear as to what caused the incident involving the man. Adding to the mystery is the fact that the windows at the facility can only be left ajar by a few centimetres, whilst other hospitals in the Asturias region cannot have their windows open at all.

Hillside Horror

A British man was rushed to a Costa del Sol hospital on Sunday, after a car came off the road and plunged 100 feet down a hillside into a riverbed. The vehicle rolled over several times before coming to a stop. A passing local alerted the emergency services around four hours later after spotting the wrecked vehicle. The Brit and another man - a Spaniard who was a pas-

senger in the car - were stretched away from the scene by firefighters. They were taken to the Carlos Haya Hospital in Malaga suffering injuries including serious head wounds and internal bleeding. One of the men was thrown out of the vehicle as it plunged down the hillside. The accident is thought to have happened around 4.00 am on a stretch of road just

off the A-45 highway linking Malaga to the inland town of Antequera. Emergency services received the call about the mangled car around 8.15 am from a passing motorist driving along the same stretch of road in daylight. Dramatic pictures showed firefighters freeing one of the victims from the wreckage of the vehicle before taking him away on a stretcher through the shallow river water.

Productive Partners

Lynne Owens, the Director General of the National Crime Agency (NCA), visited Madrid last week to continue to develop what she described as “productive partnerships with Spanish partners, and celebrating the important successes that they have had together, tackling modern slavery, drugs and illegal immigration.” Owens said: - “Spain is undoubtedly one of our most important partners in the global fight against organ-

ised crime. Every single day, the NCA works closely with Spanish law enforcement agencies, disrupting criminal activity. Such work protects the public in the UK, Spain and beyond. “Our ability to share intelligence, biometrics and other data at speed with our European allies is essential to our shared security. We do this with Spain now, and we will ensure that our cooperation continues productively and effectively after the UK leaves the EU. This

benefits us all.” Some of the key successes of the joint work between the NCA and Spain include the Operation Captura campaign, which has seen the arrest of 80 out of 96 fugitives wanted by the UK arrested in Spain last year by the National Police and Guardia Civil. They were wanted for a range of serious offences, including murder, firearms offences, child sexual exploitation, fraud, and drugs.

Ketamine has 'fast-acting benefits' for depression Ketamine has "shown promise" in the rapid treatment of major depression and suicidal thoughts, a US study says. Ketamine has a reputation as a party drug but is licensed as an anaesthetic. The study found use of the drug via a nasal spray led to "significant" improvements in depressive symptoms in the first 24 hours. The Royal College of Psychiatrists said it was a "significant" study that brought the drug "a step closer to being prescribed on the NHS". The report by researchers from Janssen Research and Development, a Johnson and Johnson company, and Yale School of Medicine, is the first study into ketamine as a treatment for depression that has been done by a drug company. It is being published in the American Journal of Psychiatry.

The trial looked at 68 people at imminent risk of suicide. All patients were treated with a stay in hospital and anti-depressants. In addition, half were given ketamine in the form of esketamine (part of the ketamine molecule) in a nasal spray and half were given a placebo. The study found those using esketamine had a much greater improvement in depression symptoms at all points over the first four weeks of treatment. However, at 25 days the effects had levelled out. The study's authors suggest it could offer an effective rapid treatment for people severely depressed and at imminent risk of suicide and could help in the initial stages of treatment, as most anti-depressants take four to six weeks to become fully effective. The nasal spray is now undergoing phase three tri-

als before it can be licensed for treatment. There were no reports of esketamine dependence or misuse in the trial but the authors warn that more research is needed on the potential for abuse of ketamine and say these should be looked at during subsequent trials. Scientists in the UK are also studying ketamine as a treatment for depression taken intravenously. Dr James Stone, from the Royal College of Psychiatrists, told the BBC the "interesting" US study confirmed the findings from successful studies into intravenous ketamine. "The main reason for its significance is because this is being developed by a drug company and it's potentially quite likely that this medication might become available as a treatment available on the NHS for depression." He said because it was

being given as a nasal spray it was "much easier to administer" than intravenous ketamine and was "potentially quicker to give, so it means more people can be dosed at the same time" and you need less equipment. Dr Stone said if it did go on to be prescribed on the NHS it would be aimed at people with severe depression as a second or third line of treatment if other drugs haven't worked and could be used for people instead of electroconvulsive therapy. Prof Mitul Mehta from King's College said. "All the studies to date have been looking at intravenous use - there are some people who have explored oral ketamine but that doesn't appear to be as successful as intravenous so intranasal seems to be a really good halfway-house. "It enters the body relatively quickly - it's not as fast as

going straight into your bloodstream but not as slow as via the stomach and it's reasonably easy to control how much you give to a person. In that respect this is a really important study." But he said far bigger studies are needed to look out for any rare side-effects. Because ketamine is licensed to be used by doctors as an aneasthetic it can be prescribed off licence for depression. This is happening in private clinics in the US and the UK. But to be prescribed on the

NHS, it would need to be licensed to be used as a treatment for depression. In the UK, doctors have been trialling ketamine to treat depression since 2011. Dr Rupert McShane, who has led a trial in Oxford, says ketamine can work on patients with depression "where nothing has helped before". Last year he called for the use of ketamine to treat depression to be rolled out. However, he called for a national registry to monitor its use.

Wake up tipplers, your nice plonk is not actually doing you any good When are certain drinkers going to realise that they’re just drinkers, consuming alcohol, like everyone else, with no special exemption from health consequences? Research from the University of Cambridge and the British Heart

Foundation, which looked at 600,000 drinkers globally, revealed that drinking more than five glasses of wine or beer a week could shorten your life and that the risks for a 40-year-old drinking over the limit were comparable with smoking.

Moreover, while there are some benefits to drinking small amounts, on balance they’re outweighed by other risks. As the new upper safe limit would be around 12.5 units (even stricter than the 2016 guidelines of 14 units a week), the researchers are

confident that the alcohol industry will denounce their findings as implausible. I’m sure they will, but they probably won’t be the only ones. Obviously, it’s far more harmful to drink heavily. However, the part of the study relating to moderate drinking appears to be mainly middle-class territory – the “one (or two) glasses of red a night won’t do me any harm and probably quite a bit of good” self-delusion desperados, who seem to think their alcohol can’t hurt them because they bought it from Waitrose. I don’t mean to sound judgmental about any form of hedonism – given the way I used to drink and smoke, I remain pleasantly surprised that I didn’t end up coughing up my full set of internal organs. This isn’t about morality – it’s about how self-delusion can set it. The politely semi-sozzled culture that decides that having a certain kind of lifestyle (the home, the attitude, the Roberts radio, the organic veg still caked in authentic soil) somehow renders alcohol more benign. These people fool themselves that there’s “nice” alcohol and the other sort and their demurely sipped mid-price plonk is “different” somehow to a slugged-back pint. In truth, while a better, more moneyed lifestyle (good diet, lower stress, more exercise) protects health generally, alcohol remains stubbornly… well, alcoholic and recognised by the body as such. It could be a pricey bottle or a dented can from the budget bin of the supermarket,

but drink too much of it, at the right strength, and it will affect your health. Oddly, this middle-class blind spot only seems to relate to stealth-drinking. As far as I’m aware, nobody is busy pretending that they’re insulated from the health hazards of cigarettes – that, like with the wine, there’s a moderate way to smoke that is “actually healthier than non-smoking”. Nor do you tend to get people sticking a

needle in their arm at dinner parties, arguing: “Heroin lowers my stress levels and gives me a sense of wellbeing, so what’s wrong with that?” Only with alcohol is there this poignant belief that the effects can be waved away with a kind of wand. Just as being comfortably off was never a magic health talisman against the dangers of smoking, neither is it against drinking too much.

Stop being afraid and start travelling: Top tips for solo adventures the perfect place for inspiration too, so you'll be savvy on what you need for your chosen destination before you even set foot on the plane.

Have you always wanted to take that dream trip, but find yourself worrying about when to book, what to pack or not knowing the language? Forget your fears and check out our guide to taking the first brave steps into the world of independent travelling.

2. What if you end up paying too much? The fear: If you go 'all inclusive' everything is done and paid for in one go with – hopefully – no hidden extras. But a DIY trip can leave you worried that you'll blow your budget. You want the best you can get for your money, but don't want to overpay. The solution: Skyscanner is your secret weapon when it comes to getting the best deal on flights, hotels and car hire. You can sign up to our price alerts to make sure you never miss out on the cheapest flights and explore our best time to book tool which tells you when to travel to make sure you get the best deal.

What can you do? Timing is everything, so for stress-free organisation start early. If you want to keep things simple, choose a single destination trip like a week on the beach in Portugal or sightseeing in Rome. Multiple destinations can complicate things, but only you know what you're ready for. You can book flights, accommodation and car hire weeks and months ahead – so, tick! That's three things done. For handy tips on things like travel insurance, what to pack and getting through the airport, Skyscanner's travel news site is the ideal place to help you figure out what needs to be done before you go. Sign up to the weekly Skyscanner newsletter and get all this straight to your inbox.

1. You don't know the language The fear: Not knowing the language makes you feel helpless. You don't know how you'll find your way around, catch a bus, order food, book a room or explain any medical problems. The solution: English is the third most widely spoken language in the world after Chinese and Spanish, so chances are someone will be able to help you. You'll find that people speak some English in most tourist hot spots, but if not, there are plenty things you can do to help yourself get around. What can you do? Download a language translation app such as Google Translate or iTranslate, as well as a map app such as Google Maps to help you get around. If you've got a phone plan that charges you for using your phone and internet abroad, then you need to go old school. Get a printed map, guide book and phrase book to carry round with you, or look things up before you go and keep a handy notebook with you at all times. Knowing key phrases like 'please can you tell me the way to...' can come in very handy when you're stuck in the middle of a busy plaza with no idea which direction is north. If you make the effort to respect the local language and culture, it'll go a long way with the locals. Learning how to say 'please', 'thank you' and 'excuse me' will score you brownie points when you're asking people for help. But if the thought of all that is too much, go easy on yourself and choose an English-speaking country for your first independent trip.

What can you do? Give yourself a budget and stick to it. Use Skyscanner to find the flights and hotel that are right for you. But it's on you to make sure you don't leave yourself strapped for cash. Don't opt for for a five star boutique hotel when your budget is three star B&B, so be strict and you won't overspend. An amazing trip doesn't have to mean you spend hundreds of pounds either, check out you can do for free at your chosen destination.

4. Taking the kids The fear: You're worried that if you bring the brood, you'll never rest for worrying about them. Where are they? What are they doing? Have they got enough sun cream on? What if they get sick? The solution: Not all child-friendly holidays have to be package deals, just check before you book that there's plenty to see and do with the kids. You could leave them at home with a responsible adult, but where's the fun in that? Embrace the challenge; if you want to travel independently there's no reason why you can't do it with the little ones in tow.

3. The thought of organising everything yourself is overwhelming The fear: Any trip, whether at home in the UK or abroad, takes a lot of time and planning to organise. It can be overwhelming to think of the travel, accommodation, insurance, food, drink, spending money, what to see and do... The solution: Luckily that's where we come in. You can book flights, hotels and car hire through our easy search, and the best part is you know you've got a great deal! Skyscanner's travel news site is

What can you do: Plan, plan, plan. It might require a bit more effort than going solo, but if you do your research, budget well and get organised it'll be a breeze. Roasted Asparagus & Smashed New Potato Salad

Ingredients 200g asparagus ½ lemon, juiced and zested 500g new potatoes 2 tbsp olive oil 2 Little Gem lettuces, quartered 50g peas 100g soft goat’s cheese small bunch dill or parsley Method Slice the bottom 2cm of the asparagus spears into thin rounds and set aside in a bowl with the lemon juice. Bring a pan of salted water to the boil and boil the pota-

toes for 10-12 mins until cooked through, adding the asparagus spears for the last 2 mins of cooking. Drain and steam-dry in the colander. Heat the grill to high. Tip the potatoes onto a baking tray and use a spoon or fish slice to crush them a bit. Add the asparagus to the tray and toss in 1 tbsp of the olive oil, season and grill for 10-15 mins, turning halfway through, until the potatoes are crisp and the asparagus is cooked through and a little charred. Add the lettuce for the final 5 mins until

charred. Meanwhile, cook the peas, drain and add these to the lemon juice and asparagus ends. Whisk in the olive oil and season. Pile the lettuce, asparagus and potatoes onto a large serving dish. Top with chunks of goat’s cheese, the asparagus stalks and peas, drizzling the sauce over the rest of the vegetables as you go. Scatter with dill and lemon zest to serve. Prep: 15 mins Cook: 20 - 25 mins Serves: 3

Chicken legs with pesto, butter beans & kale Ingredients vegetable oil, for frying

½ lime, juiced 2 tsp sesame seeds

For the burger 1 peeled sweet potato (200g), cut into small chunks 1 tbsp olive oil 1 small onion, finely chopped 1 garlic clove, crushed 1 tsp cumin 1 tsp smoked paprika 1 tsp garlic salt 225g pack smoked tofu 50g roasted cashews

To serve vegan mayonnaise mixed with ½ tbsp Sriracha vegan burger buns, halved and toasted

For the coating 1 tsp English mustard 150ml soy milk 75g plain flour 50g panko breadcrumbs 1 tsp garlic salt ½ tsp cayenne pepper 1 tbsp icing sugar 1 tsp baking powder For the slaw ¼ red cabbage, finely shredded 1 carrot, grated 2 tbsp chopped coriander

Method Put the sweet potato in a microwaveable bowl, cover with cling film and cook on high for 3 mins until soft. Heat the oil in a non-stick frying pan and fry the onion with a big pinch of salt until soft, around 5 mins. Add the garlic and spices and cook for 2 mins more, then set aside. Blitz the tofu with the cashews in a blender, then tip in the sweet potato and fried onions. Season and blitz again until combined. Shape into four burger patties and set aside in the fridge on a lined baking tray while you make the slaw. Make the slaw by combining the ingredients in a

bowl, then set aside until needed. When you’re ready to fry the patties, mix the mustard with the soy milk in one bowl, then mix the remaining coating ingredients in another bowl. In turn, take each patty and dip into the flour mixture, then into the soy milk mixture, then back into the flour mixture. Repeat this again so you get a really nice crust on the patties. Pour the vegetable oil into a large frying pan over a medium-high heat - you want the oil to come about 2cm up the side of the pan. Once hot, use a spatula to carefully add the patties and gently fry for 1 min on each side until crispy, then leave to drain on kitchen paper. Serve the burgers in burger buns, topped with the slaw and drizzled with the mayo. Prep: 35 mins Cook: 5 mins Serves: 4

Ingredients 1 tbsp olive oil 4 skin-on chicken legs 2 x 400g cans butter beans, drained 4 tbsp good quality pesto 100ml white wine 180g kale, woody stalks removed ½ lemon, juiced Method Heat a splash of oil in a large frying pan over a medium-high heat, season the chicken and add to the pan skin-side down. Brown for 7-10 mins until

the skin is golden and crisp. Meanwhile, mix the butter beans with the pesto, wine and 100ml water. Flip the chicken legs over so the crispy side is facing up and pour the butter bean mix around them (be careful not to pour over the chicken so the skin remains crisp). Turn the heat down to a simmer and cook for 20-30 mins until the liquid has reduced by about half and the chicken is cooked through. Remove the

meat, set aside and cover with foil. Add the kale to the butter beans, along with the lemon juice, season and cook for 3-5 mins until wilted. Add a splash more water if it looks too dry. Split between four plates, top with the crispy chicken legs and crack over some black pepper and add an extra spoonful of pesto, if you like.

Lemon and Thyme Pork Schnitzel

INGREDIENTS 2 x 180g pork loin steaks 1 large egg 2 tbsp plain flour 75g coarse dried white breadcrumbs (Japanese panko breadcrumbs are ideal) finely grated zest of ½ lemon 15g Parmesan cheese, finely grated 1 heaped tbsp chopped

fresh thyme leaves 300ml vegetable oil 2 handfuls of watercress, to garnish 1–2 tsp extra virgin olive oil, to drizzle flaked sea salt freshly ground black pepper METHOD Place a pork loin steak between 2 sheets of cling-

film and bash it with rolling pin or meat mallet until it is about 1cm thick all over. Remove the clingfilm and cut the flattened steak in half lengthways, then prepare the other steak in the same way. Season the steaks on both sides with salt and black pepper. Beat the egg in a bowl. Sprinkle the flour on to a plate. Mix the bread-

crumbs, lemon zest, Parmesan, thyme and a good pinch of salt in a shallow bowl. Take a piece of pork and dredge it in flour, then dip it into the beaten egg, and lastly in the breadcrumb mixture until it is completely coated. Repeat with the other pieces of pork. Heat the oil in a large frying pan until a breadcrumb siz-

zles and turns goldenbrown when dropped into it. Take care: hot oil can be dangerous so don’t leave the pan unattended. Add 2 of the schnitzels to the pan and fry for 2–3 minutes on each side, or until the pork is cooked through and the coating is crisp and golden brown. Remove them from the pan and set aside on a

warmed plate lined with kitchen paper. Keep them warm while you cook the other 2 schnitzels. Serve garnished with watercress and drizzled with a little olive oil. Some potato salad on the side is just right with these. Prep: 20 mins Cook: 10 mins Serves: 4

Easy Chocolate Molten Cakes

Ingredients 100g butter, plus extra 100g dark chocolate, chopped 150g light brown soft sugar 3 large eggs ½ tsp vanilla extract 50g plain flour single cream, to serve Method Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Butter 6 dariole moulds or basins well and place on a baking tray. Put the rest of the butter and chocolate in a heat-

proof bowl and set over a pan of hot water (or alternatively put in the microwave and melt in 30 second bursts on a low setting) and stir until smooth, then set aside to cool slightly for 15 min. Using an electric hand whisk, mix in the sugar, then the eggs, one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract and finally the flour. Divide the mixture among the darioles or basins. TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

Abi Morgan’s latest drama, The Split (BBC 1, Tuesday) is all about lawyers and divorce, or should that be divorce and lawyers? Her work is always interesting, but to be honest I felt a bit undernourished by the first episode. There’s no complaints about the line up of actors, led by Nicola Walker, who looks almost unrecognisable in a load of make-up and light coloured hair, as she plays one of a trio of sisters who work in a very dogeat-dog world of being divorce solicitors. So nasty in fact, that one of Walker’s clients pinches a big money client off her! Walker, as always, delivers in a role which has seen her quit a firm run by her mother to work for a rival, and there’s no love lost, plus we have her dad (Anthony Head) making an unwelcome return onto the scene, having abandoned his family decades earlier. Despite Walker’s bravura performance, The Split surprisingly didn’t deliver enough on emotion and family matters, and got too bogged down in legal and

Truly Nasty Business

office business/politics, which didn’t do it for me, and it all got a bit boring. Let’s hope there’s a shift in focus over the remaining five episodes, as the foundations are all there for The Split to truly deliver. HBO have been frantically looking around for a blockbuster replacement for Game Of Thrones, once the final series airs next year, and Westworld (Sky Atlantic) has been touted as perhaps fitting the bill. Sorry,

think again! I quite enjoyed the first series some 18 months ago, but this week’s opener left me totally baffled and bewildered in a classic example of style over substance. Not helped by the break between series, I just could not work out what was going on, and more importantly I really couldn’t care less. If you think that Game Of Thrones takes a bit of following, I challenge you to the Westworld test!

Sadly episode one was just an excruciating bit of self-indulgence by the producers and a waste of some fine acting talent. Fortunately for HBO, they have some Thrones spin-off shows in the works, plus in a very different vein, the return of the glorious Big Little Lies (with Meryl Streep) next year. As for Westworld, regrettably just put it in the file and forget column. There’s no doubt that

Britain’s Got Talent (ITV) delivers a highly entertaining package that makes for perfect Saturday night viewing, and the first two outings show that the producers know exactly how to pull the old heart strings. But did you really witness anything so far that could be classified as an outstanding and original new talent that is worthy of being the winner? I didn’t, and I much prefer the American version which is far more creative with the acts and hits the top level for craziness, and has a better judging panel. The latest run of The Good Karma Hospital (ITV), which finished on Sunday, was I think even better than the first series, and the finale had some nice cameo appearances and bags of emotion. There’s no surprise that ITV ordered a third series (ages ago, by the way), but why only six episodes? A Good Karma series is certainly worthy of hitting double figures in an episode order, whilst The Durrells at least gets eight instalments (and a guaranteed and deserved official renewal

announcement next month). Come on ITV, you are not awash in newish drama hits, so make the most of what you’ve got! I think that Kate Oates has done a great job in her two-year tenure running Coronation Street, but that seems to be the average time limit of being the show’s producer before moving onto pastures new, and that announcement came this week. Oates has boosted the ratings for Corrie, and has brought old favourites back to the show (Carla Connor, Peter Barlow, Toyah Battersby) and also rightly put a big focus on the Barlows. I’ll forgive her for the over-long, and at times ridiculous Pat Phelan plot! The main task for new boss, Iain McLeod (who like Oates and his other predecessors, has been producing Emmerdale) is to get some more comedy in there, with things not helped by the absence of Malcolm Hebden (Norris Cole), who is on extended leave at the moment. More Brian please, and perhaps even taking over The Kabin?

28 But what will her answer be? Meanwhile, Charity is driven to obsession.

Friday Daz struggles to contain his emotions after the news about Ali and he ends up sharing a huge secret with Kerry after getting drunk. What has Daz been hiding? Meanwhile, Noah reaps material rewards by playing Joe and Charity against each other. Elsewhere, Vanessa pleads with Charity. Also today, Rishi needs Frank’s unique skills.

Monday Kerry feels burdened by the secret she is guarding for Daz, but he’s keen to offload and explains the full story. A brooding Kerry is conflicted about what to do. Can she keep the secret? Meanwhile, Tracy confesses her feelings. Elsewhere, Frank helps a friend in need.

Tuesday Megan is fearful that Frank has been cheating on her again and she ends up sharing a kiss with Graham during a business meeting. Later, Megan is shocked when Frank explains that he wasn’t cheating and reveals the real reason for his secrecy by getting down on one knee to propose.

Friday 27th April 2018

Wednesday Megan tries to contain her secret and wants Graham to keep quiet, but will it be that simple? Meanwhile, Aaron and Robert are both proud to think Liv is dealing with things as they prepare to leave after their latest visit.

Friday Alya, Imran and new waitress Kayla set up the restaurant with Zeedan. Rana is jumpy, having heard nothing from her parents, but Zeedan says she should set the police on them. Later, Rana receives an anonymous phone call and is shocked when her father arrives at Number 6. He angrily accuses her of having her mother arrested. Meanwhile, as Simon winds up Toyah, she covers in front of Peter as she’s fearful of Simon blabbing her secret. But when Simon’s behaviour oversteps the mark, with him and Tyler skiving off school in the pub back room, she realises it may be time to come clean to Peter.

However, Steve approaches them and soon Aaron is left concerned. Elsewhere, Charity sabotages a secret meeting.

Thursday Noah and Joe share some brotherly bonding time at the edge of a quarry, chucking stones into the water. They share their thoughts and it’s emotional as they bond. Noah dares Joe to jump off the edge and Joe impulsively does it. However, when Joe doesn’t resurface, Noah is left terrified that his brother is dead. Meanwhile, Belle conceals her inner torment.

Rana is furious with Kate for reporting her mother and heads off to the station, where she tells the police there is no way she would testify against her mum. She apologises to Zeedan, who offers her a job at Speed Daal. Kayla walks in to find Zeedan hugging Rana and giving her a kiss. Zeedan tells Kayla that he thinks Rana still has feelings for him. Monday Simon helps Toyah carry a cot from the car into the pub, leaving her keys in the car. Tyler spots this and persuades Simon to let him take the car for a spin. When Toyah makes a video call to Eva and notices she looks unwell, she tells Eva she is coming over but panics when her car keys are missing. Simon returns with the car but says he

found a direct debit inside for a cottage in Lymm. Toyah tells Simon it was a surprise for Peter, but Leanne is suspicious when Toyah covers for Simon with Peter.

Toyah manages to break into the bathroom and calls 999. An operator talks them through the labour and Eva gives birth in the bathroom before being taken to hospital. Eva tells Toyah that they will have to come up with a plan, as her surrogate is supposed to be in Dubai. Eva has avoided holding the baby, but left alone in hospital, she has no choice but to pick up her daughter and she stares down at her little face in awe. Wednesday In the flower shop, Mary coaches the two people she has booked to play Seth and Philippa. Over at the Marine Centre, the real Seth and Philippa are sacking Jude after seeing CCTV footage of him setting off the fire alarm. Jude gets back to The Rovers and tells Mary to abandon the plan, but Angie arrives and ushers them all to Number 3 for dinner. Will the meal go to plan?

Friday Max tries to get his life back together following his return, but how easy will it be? Meanwhile, Mel gets tough with Kat – warning her to return the booze she stole the night before if she wants to keep her job. Later on, Kat manages to get herself a cleaning trial at The Vic and steals some of the Carters’ alcohol to pay Mel back! Elsewhere, all is well for the Ahmeds again now that Harley’s parents are in custody.

Monday Halfway makes a surprise return to Walford and makes up a cover story in front of Whitney and the Carters when they notice that he’s injured. Halfway gets a warm welcome from everyone, with Mick and Linda even offering him Shirley’s room at the pub so he has somewhere to stay. Later on, Whitney tries to seduce Halfway but notices that he’s not his usual self. What is Halfway hiding? Meanwhile, Phil decides it’s time to concentrate his efforts on becoming a successful business owner again. realises that it’s Max. Tuesday Max turns down a cash bribe from Phil, who

Meanwhile, Peter is excited to get a text from Toyah saying the surrogate is in labour. Eva then hides in another room in the cottage whilst Toyah video chats Peter to show him his daughter. They agree to call her Susie.

wants him to leave the Square. Phil’s mood worsens when Henry – the rude customer from yesterday – confronts him over Sharon’s antics. Phil is also unhappy with Keanu for messing up the books while he was away, so he gives him a one-day deadline to prove himself at The Arches or get sacked. Thursday Billy’s birthday gets off to a bad start when Mel angrily confronts him for messing up at work. Seemingly regretting being so harsh, Mel shows a softer side by deciding to organise a surprise birthday party for him.

Abigail is unimpressed when Mikey unexpectedly turns up at Holby on a busy shift and forces Fletch to question where his priorities lie. Can he keep an overstretched ward afloat and still be there for his family?

Determined to impress Abigail on a complicated case, Nicky tries to bury her head in the sand. With time running out fast she reluctantly faces her spiralling money problems.

Britain’s Got Talent

Escape to the Chateau

Saturday - ITV Ant and Dec host the third heat of the nationwide talent search, which sees a wide variety of acts, from comedians to contortionists, singers to spoon players, compete to impress judges Simon Cowell, Alesha Dixon, Amanda Holden and David Walliams. Whomever the quartet choose to send through to the live stages will then be in with a chance of winning a huge cash prize and a coveted slot at the Royal Variety Performance later this year, following in the footsteps of 2017 winner Tokio Myers.

Britain's Most Historic Towns

Sunday - Channel 4 Dick Strawbridge and Angel Adoree continue their renovation of a French chateau, 18 months after the end of the first series. So far, only nine rooms have been renovated and many areas of the 12-acre estate have yet to be looked at - but the project is going to have to start paying for itself soon. They make plans to host weddings on the grounds, while looking ahead to keeping livestock and growing their own crops. Dick takes steps to generate solar power during a hot summer, and turns an old oil tank into a pig roaster.

The Woman In White Sunday - BBCOne

Saturday - Channel 4 Professor Alice Roberts tells the story of Tudor England via the history of another town with a rich and varied past: Norwich. As Britain's most Tudor city, Norwich offers a window into the harsh reality of religious intolerance as it was back then. Alice also uncovers the origins of the town football team's iconic canary, before experiencing the humiliation that goes handin-hand with justice, Tudor-style.

ADVICE: Pauline wanted to know if an Amazon Dot was an ADVICE: Rose wanted to know how to get hold of the latest appropriate present for her grandson version of AVG

Q

A

Hello Richard, Do you think there would be any benefit in buying our 14-year-old grandson an Echo Dot, since he already has an Apple watch? Also, if we do buy one, is there more than the unit itself to purchase? Thank you. Pauline Smith.

Hi Pauline, sorry for the delay in replying. You see, my initial reaction to your email was “yes of course, it’s a great gadget, he would love it”. However, on reflection, it’s probably something that you should discuss with his parents, of course. At the age of 14, he is older than the mini mum age (which is 13) required for the use of an Amazon Dot, however, in order to use it effectively, a credit card is needed (for the purchase of additional services) and, of course, at that age he wouldn’t have one.

Q

A

Hi Richard, It’s Rose. When I type in website for AVG free security cover and click search, a list of sites offering AVG free cover appears. I’m not sure which heading to click on at the moment on my computer. It says I have 28 days left of cover, so I thought I would download the new free version of avg. Thanks Richard.

Hi Rose, You can download the free version of AVG 2013, the latest version, from the link below… http://free.avg.com/eu-en/free-downloads… once down loaded, you just need to run the installation and AVG will automatically remove the previous version and install the new free version.

In terms of what to purchase, you can either go for the more expensive (and much better speaker) Amazon Echo or the cheaper (and fine if you don’t want to play music) Amazon Dot. I hope this helps.

Automobili Pininfarina to launch new electric hypercar in 2020 ‘World’s newest sustainable luxury car brand’

Fabled Italian design consultancy Pininfarina is branching out and building its own electric car brand, it was announced today. The first model will be an electric hypercar and it’s due to launch in 2020. It’s a reflection of how electrification is reshaping the car industry, enabling new players to leapfrog established manufacturers and start selling EVs in quick order. Not that Pininfarina is a newcomer; it’s been designing cars for 88 years and has specialised in low-volume production for quite a few of those. The styling specialists used the Italian round of the Formula E race to announce its new launch, in partnership with Indian automotive giant the Mahindra Group. Automobili Pininfarina is the new company and it’ll be based in Italy, albeit with plenty of financial and business assistance from Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, which brings a slew of electric car know-how. ‘The company will design, engineer and manufacture high-technology, extreme perform-

ance, luxury electric vehicles for the most discerning global customers,’ the statement in Rome said. ‘Automobili Pininfarina will combine Pininfarina’s legendary automotive design prowess with Mahindra’s growing electric vehicle (EV) expertise gained from its participation in the Formula E electric racing car championship. Automobili Pininfarina plans to launch its first model, a Pininfarina-badged electric hypercar, in 2020.’ Mahindra is racing in the fledgling Formula E championship (above); it is currently second in the manufacturers and drivers’ championship. Paolo Pininfarina, chairman of Pininfarina SpA, said: ‘We are pleased to welcome the new company, Automobili Pininfarina which represents an additional client for Pininfarina SpA, joining the list of the many prestigious car makers for which we will be designing cars in the future. This project helps me and my family to realise my grandfather’s dream of seeing outstanding innovative cars solely branded Pininfarina on the roads.’

OFF-TRACK ATTRACTIONS ADD TO THE FUN AT DONINGTON HISTORIC FESTIVAL

As well as an outstanding programme of 19 races from 14 world-class grids of historic competition cars from the 1920s-2000s, the 2018 Donington Historic Festival (Donington Park, May 4, 5 and 6) features a host of off-track attractions to add to the excitement and entertainment. Clouds of tyre smoke will waft across the paddock from the Melbourne Loop as the ever-popular Group B rally cars demonstrate their considerable power and agility. These mighty machines echo back to the 1980s, when Donington Park was an RAC Rally stage and Group B dominated international rallying. These lightweight, 4WD, supercharged beasts, which could command in excess of 600bhp, were all-powerful, but their reign was brought to an end following a series of driver deaths and high-profile accidents. Now the only chance to see Group B cars in action is at demonstration events, when icons such as Audi quattros, Ford RS2000s, Porsche 911 RSRs and MG Metro 6R4s

remind us of just how potent they are. The off-track attractions aren’t confined to the ground - it’s eyes to the skies at Donington Park on Saturday May 5, when a Spitfire and Hurricane from the Royal Air Force Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) will treat DHF visitors to a flypast. And necks will be craning again on Sunday, May 6, when the BBMF Dakota – a rather larger aircraft – flies over the event. Back down to Earth again, F1 car demonstrations on the Saturday and Sunday of the event, plus static displays on all three days will celebrate that famous day at Donington Park in April 1993, when Ayrton Senna fought Alain Prost, Damon Hill, Michael Schumacher and the British weather to win the European Grand Prix by an incredible 80 seconds. ‘WORLD’S FINEST CAR’ COMING TO CONCOURS OF ELEGANCE 2018

The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance ‘Best in Show’-winning 1929 Mercedes-Benz S Barker Tourer ‘Boat Tail’ – arguably the finest car in the world – is now confirmed for Concours of Elegance 2018. This year’s event, hosted at Hampton Court Palace from 31 August to 2 September, represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for visitors to see the award-winning Mercedes as it comes to the UK for the first time since 1958. Based on the 1927 Mercedes S-Type, the unique ‘Boat Tail’ was one of the most powerful road-going automobiles in the world in period, developed as the perfect roadgoing, race capable car. Originally owned by racing enthusiast and British Racing Drivers’ Club co-founder Earl Howe, this car was fitted with a revolutionary body which incorporated a lightweight and aerodynamic shell with unique aircraft-inspired aluminium side pods crafted by English coachbuilders Barker. The car was a regular on tours, trials and competition events in the UK before new ownership in 1958 took it to America, where it has remained, and will remain, until it travels

across the Atlantic for the Concours of Elegance from 31 August to 2 September. When it was first sold to American owners, the car was repainted in a dark maroon colour and the rear of the car was renovated to sport an additional spare tyre instead of its distinctive ‘Boat Tail’. But, its most recent owner has just completed a multi-year project of restoring the car to its former glory. The majority of Earl Howe’s unique specifications were all-but-lost until a host of photographs unearthed aspects of the original vehicles. They revealed the missing ‘Boat Tail’, numerous reflective surfaces, custom touring luggage and a red spotlight which was given to Members of Parliament to alert other road users to their status. Upon disassembly patches of the Earl Howe’s signature Peacock Blue paint were also discovered, which has now been sympathetically recreated. Visitors to this year’s Concours of Elegance will not only be treated to the unique ‘Boat Tail’ but to around 60 other extremely rare or unique vehicles in the Main Concours event. Telling the complete story of the motorcar, the Concours will begin with a 1903 Panhard et Levassor and finish with one of 2018’s most exclusive supercars.

AUTONOMOUS PARKING READY FOR SERIES VEHICLES Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche testing autonomous parking at Hamburg Airport

Using what is to date unique technology, the Volkswagen Group is currently testing autonomous parking at Hamburg Airport: based on a car park map the Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche vehicles navigate their way to a parking space on their own. Orientation is provided for them by simple pictorial markers installed in the multi-storey car park. Its advantage: this can be used in essentially any car park. The function is set to be available for the first customers in selected multi-storey car parks from the start of the next decade. Johann Jungwirth, Chief Digital Officer of the Volkswagen Group, says: “Autonomous parking can make an important contribution to creating convenient, stress-free mobility for our customers. We therefore want to democratise the technology and make it accessible to as many people as possible. The autonomous parking function being publicly demonstrated for the first time in Hamburg has already left the research lab and is currently at an advanced stage of development. It is due to be ready to order for some initial Volkswagen Group vehicles from the start of the next decade. Safety the top priority: autonomous parking to be introduced in stages In the first stage it will be possible to use autonomous parking in selected multistorey car parks in an exclusive traffic flow, i.e. in separate areas of the car park not accessible to people. Before operation in exclusive traffic begins, the autonomous parking system is being

extensively tested: thousands of parking procedures in different places around the world are being performed and analysed. In parallel with this safeguarding of the system through simulations is also taking place. The next stage will be operation in mixed traffic, i.e. vehicles parking and moving autonomously in the same areas of the car park as cars with drivers. And the vision is clear: to have vehicles parking autonomously in all car parks, including public ones, such as outside supermarkets. There are good reasons for gradually introducing autonomous driving functions: "What we offer our customers works absolutely reliably and safely. This is what today's technology for vehicles from the Volkswagen Group stands for, and we will continue to keep this promise – also in the era of autonomous driving," says Johann Jungwirth. The vehicles with the autonomous parking function will all be equipped with an active surroundings recognition system. This is able to recognise objects and react accordingly, be that by going around them, braking or completely stopping. Vehicles are equipped for this with a sensor set, including, for instance, ultrasound, radar and cameras. The data is processed in a central control unit in the car. In the multi-storey car park the car uses map data to drive on its own accord to a vacant parking space. Simple pictorial markers put up in the car park provide the vehicles with a means of orientation.

LAYING A TARMAC RULE

Many golf clubs allow relief from tarmac roads and other hard paths, but not all, writes JOHN FARMER. So should a tarmac road ever be an integral part of the course in the modern era? Pro’s play off Granny Clark's Wynd on the Old Course at St. Andrews but most of them can afford to replace their clubs! There is a number of annoying golf rules that seem to give us a particularly bad deal. But the Rules of Golf’s real ‘two of spades’ is undoubtedly the tarmac, or other distinctly hardsurfaced road or pathway, that for some unfathomable reason the committee, in its infinite wisdom, has deemed an integral part of the course. In other words, if you’re on it, you either play it or take a penalty. It could be argued that this is both blatantly unfair and practically irresponsible in an era where a decent full set of sticks can set you back as much as a nice secondhand family

saloon. Who would feel it fair if, to park your precious motor, you were required by the laws of the road to either first scrape your front wing on a nearby wall or pay a hefty fine. But that’s exactly what golf’s outdated integral road rule asks you to do – damage your five iron or sand wedge, perhaps irreparably, or take a penalty drop and hand your opponent the advantage. Nowhere is this more prevalent than on the Old Course at St Andrews. Knock it through the back of the already devilishly difficult 17th – not hard to do as anyone who’s ever played there will readily testify – and not only do you now face an almost impossible chip up and over a four foot bank onto a downslope, but it’s highly likely you’ll also find yourself having to play it from a rock-hard pathway or road. No wonder the hole is renowned for humiliating cricket scores and fraught tempers.

Title Winning Squalos Final Playas Battle

The youth team (under 19s, pictured) from the Escuela Racing Playas De Orihuela were crowned juvenile league champions last weekend, with a three-two victory at San Miguel de Salinas. Two goals from Esteban and one from Bermudez sealed the title, with three of the squad last week having the experience of doing some training in Madrid with top flight side, CD Leganes. It was an impressive weekend of results for the Payas De Orihuela teams with the Prebenjamins win-

ning three-two at Promesas Torrevieja, whilst the Benjamins thrashed Daya Nueva, five-nil. The cadets put six past La Murada, who got just one in replay, and it was six of the best as well for the girls side, winning with the same score at Bonavtista. The Alevin side drew oneall at Oriol; the Infantil Brave team lost three-four at home to Callosa, but the Infantil Federado players had a three-one victory over La Murada; and the Juvenil side edged out Algorfa, threetwo.

The Mar Menor Squalos (pictured in blue) finished off their season in the Murcia Federation FERRMUR Top Five league, with a battling home performance last weekend against Cartagena University. Though they suffered a defeat at San Javier by 17 points to 7 on Sunday, the Squalos equipped themselves bravely with the visitors already assured of second place in the table, with

the Squalos also guaranteed third position before kick-off. The final table saw the Squalos win four and lose four of the eight matches played over the last few months. A season that has seen the club make significant progress, will now have heads already turning to the next campaign, in addition to all of the summer’s beach rugby events.

Walk to the 18th tee and it’s a similar story – misclub, or misjudge your drive, especially into the wind, and the sparks will be flying as you attempt to pick a clean mid-iron off the neatly tarmacked Granny Clark’s Wynd that crosses the fairway at 240 yards. Even if you do knock it on from here, you’ll be heading straight back to your club pro to get the loft and lie checked, and those irritating scratches and scrapes ground out of your costly seven iron as much as possible. But it’ll never be the same again. Maybe in golf’s earlier, more primitive days, people weren’t overly fussed about the appearance of their golf gear. But in our 21st century world of high-tech and expensive golf equipment, the majority of players most definitely are. So perhaps those more primitive days are exactly where the integral road rule now belongs?

Orihuela’s Victory

ITV Orihuela Vega Baja (pictured in black and yellow) rounded off what was a disappointing season, by their standards, in the Murcia Federation FERRMUR Top Five league, with an expected victory over bottom side Rugby Lorca. Last weekend’s home fixture saw the local Orihuela team roll over Lorca by 57 points to 22, with the Vega Baja side subsequently fin-

ishing fourth in the table, with three victories in their eight outings. Rugby Lorca’s campaign saw them winless in all of their fixtures. The title was won a few weeks ago by XV Rugby Murcia, who lost just one match throughout the whole of the campaign, and that was earlier in the month away to second-placed Cartagena University.

Third Division News

An 85th-minute Rayo Ibense goal denied Orihuela a victory in last weekend’s Valencia Regional Third Division clash, but the point from the two-all scoreline kept Orihuela on top, after second-placed Castellón were surprisingly held nil-nil at home by bottom side Recambios Colon. With play-off status already in the bag, Orihuela got the perfect start at Ibi, as Iván put them ahead in the third minute, only for Rafa Pina to equalise shortly CD Thader’s hopes of making the end-of-season play-offs suffered another major blow last Sunday, when the Rojales-based side went down three-nil to Callosa Deportiva( Thader pictured in their away orange kit). 350 spectators watched the match, which saw Víctor put Callosa ahead in the 21st minute, with Juanjo Manresa making it two in the 68th minute, plus Tono wrapping up matters right at the very end. What was frustrating for Thader was that they dominated large chunks of the match, but with no reward at all, including a Rubén Sanz penalty miss in the 85th minute to sum it all up. Three matches remain for fifth-placed Thader, who have to win them all, and hope for teams above them to drop points. Next up is a home fixture this Sunday against relegation-bound Petrelense with an 11.30 am kick-off.

before half-time. Fran Martínez restored the visitors’ advantage in the 63rd minute, but Jordi got the late equaliser for the home side to get a share of the spoils. With three fixtures remaining, Orihuela return to the Los Arcos stadium on Sunday for a 6.00 pm kickoff against fifth-placed Eldense, who are battling to get into the play-off zone. It wasn’t a happy Sunday for Crevillente, as the midtable side suffered a three-

nil home defeat at the hands of Buñol, who grabbed the welcome three points in their fight against relegation. Crevillente take on another side below them this weekend, as they go to Paterna. A new coach has seen Elche Ilicitano record successive wins, and last weekend saw a fine one-nil victory at Villarreal. The Ilicitanos stand three points clear of the relegation area, and play CD Roda this Bank Holiday Tuesday.

Late Leveller

CD MONTESINOS 2 CALLOSA DEP B 2 With a much changed side and no less than five first team regulars missing, CD Montesinos almost came unstuck again last Sunday in their Valencia Primera Division clash against a Callosa side who were desperate for the points as they try to avoid relegation. The first half performance from Monte was, as it had been the previous week at Cox, totally out of character with their form this season. The players looked tired and unable to play their free flowing game as they have

A goal four minutes into added time deprived CD Almoradi (pictured above before kick-off) of a win against Pinoso CF, with the match finishing two-all at the Sadrian stadium. Two goals either side of the interval from Confi and Saúl had put Almoradi into the driving seat, before Jahiro pulled one back on the hour mark. Victory seemed to be heading Almoradi’s way though when Pinoso’s substitute José was sent off, with four minutes remaining, but Jony did not read the script by getting a 94th-minute leveller to silence the home supporters. Almoradi lie 13th in the table, and go to 11th-placed FB Redovan this Sunday, with the match starting at 11.30 am. After a break last weekend because of Calpe being thrown out of the Preferente, CD Torrevieja return to action this Sunday. 12th placed Torry entertain third-placed Hercules B, with an 11.30 am kick-off. The club has stated via social media that the match will be played at the Nelson Mandela stadium, but in keeping with the lack of news of what is going behind the scenes there, no explanation has been given over the switch from the neighbouring Vicente Garcia stadium.

done for most of the season and found themselves 0-2 down with the visitors scoring from their first two attacks thanks to Alex Monera (10 mins) and Josan (16 mins). The one Monte glint on an otherwise woeful first half came right at the end. Having already had a goal disallowed (as Monte woke up after going 0-2 down), they pulled a goal back right on half time when Daniel Saiz fired past the keeper. The second half held great expectation for Monte, but it was not to be, having

hit the woodwork twice; had another goal disallowed; and a number of goal line clearances. It looked as if all the good work in the second half would count for nothing, when up popped second half substitute Manuel Sanchez who, in the 89th minute of the game, equalised with a truly magnificent effort to give Monte a share of the points. This Sunday, CD Montesinos travel to local rivals Racing San Miguel for a 6.00 pm kick-off, in what will be the penultimate fixture of the season.

BAYERN MUNICH 1 REAL MADRID 2 VALENCIA B 3 ELCHE 3

BARCELONA 5 SEVILLA 0 Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde admitted he would "give an arm" to have had Andres Iniesta's playing career, after the veteran's starring role in the Copa del Rey final thrashing of Sevilla last Saturday. Iniesta's long and decorated career with the club, now comprising 31 trophies, is winding down and he is widely expected to head for China at the end of the season. His performance in the 5-0 success at Madrid's Wanda Metropolitano therefore took on an extra dimension, with a fine second-half goal the highlight and his tearful exit in the closing minutes the emotional peak. Despite Luis Suarez's first-half double, Lionel Messi's 40th goal of the campaign and Philippe Coutinho's penalty, it was Iniesta's night, as fans of both sides came together to hail his contribution. Valverde, whose first piece of silverware at the helm continued Barca's four-year reign in the competition, admitted he withdrew the maestro in the closing moments to maximise what could be his final performance in the spotlight. Let's see what happens. He has to make the decision. See it, enjoy it," said Valverde. "I wanted people to give him a tribute for his party. It is marking an era. "It's a pleasure to see him play. He does easy things that are so difficult. I would have given an arm when I was a player to do what Andres does." Valverde looks certain to end the campaign with a domestic double, the La Liga title requiring only the finishing touch, but still has his critics after a shock Champions League exit to Roma. "I feel good but I am aware that at big teams when there is an elimination there is a cataclysm. You have a failure and it seems that everything goes overboard," he said. Barca could become LaLiga champions with a draw or a win over struggling Deportivo La Coruna this Sunday. They could also be crowned champions before that if Real Madrid fail to beat Leganes and Atletico Madrid fail to beat Alaves. The club have already begun preparations to celebrate doing the double for the eighth time in the club's history, with plans to hold a street parade on Monday.

Real Madrid boosted their hopes of winning the Champions League for the third successive year after seizing control of their Champions League semi-final showdown with Bayern Munich by winning Wednesday’s away leg. Bayern opened the scoring through Joshua Kimmich only for Marcelo to reply for the visitors shortly before half-time and substitute Marco Asensio to conjure a winner prior to the hour mark. A 150th Champions League victory and two crucial away goals ensured Real assumed pole position in the battle to reach the final in Kiev on May 26th, potentially against Liverpool who hold a 5-2 lead over Roma following Tuesday’s first leg. “We were really solid and defended very well. We’ve taken the first step,” said Real captain Sergio Ramos. Real return to La Liga action this Saturday evening with a match against Leganes, which kicks-off at 6.30 pm.

Elche were caught napping after a crazy start to Sunday’s match saw them go a goal down within just 20 seconds with a Jordi Sanchez goal. Things then got worse, when Fran Villalba doubled Valencia’s advantage within two minutes! Almost straight away, Sory Kaba pulled one back for the Ilicitanos, only for Valencia, through Miguel Merentiel, to restore their two goal advantage on the 15 minute mark. The eventful first half continued to deliver, as Manolin got Elche’s second in the 35th minute, and then Valencia’s opening scorer, Jordi Sanchez, was sent-off before the interval, after a dreadful challenge. Sory Kaba put the Ilicitanos back on level terms eight minutes into the second half, but Elche just could not get the crucial winner against 10-man Valencia, as scoring chances were squandered. Despite what could have been, the away point all but guaranteed Elche a place in the play-offs, with three matches remaining. They remain third in the Segunda Division B table, and are seven points ahead of fifth-placed Lleida Esportiu who come to the Martinez Valero stadium this Sunday. Trying to overhaul second-placed Villarreal is important for the Ilicitanos, as the third and fourth-placed sides may have to be involved in some elimination rounds. Elche’s remaining matches after the Lleida clash sees them at home to local rivals Hercules, and then away to Olot.

Real Targets

Lopez Sacked

Tottenham striker Harry Kane is a transfer target for Real Madrid, according to the club's former president Ramon Calderon. Kane is under contract with Spurs until 2022, but has been touted as a potential signing for Real. Calderon believes Kane is on their wishlist, along with Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski. Meanwhile, Real Madrid have had no contact with Liverpool over a move for Mohamed Salah, according to Sky Sports. Liverpool were reported to have told Real Madrid that £200m would not be enough to sign the PFA Player of the Year. Salah has four years remaining on his contract at Anfield after signing from Roma for £34m last summer. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said earlier this month he "knows" Salah will remain at the club. "It's not the situation where I would even think about it," said Klopp, when asked if Salah could leave.

Barcelona have dismissed Gerard Lopez as coach of their B side after a poor run of form. Gerard has been replaced for the final six league games by Francisco Javier Garcia Pimienta, who recently led the Barcelona U19s to UEFA Youth League glory over Chelsea. Barca B have lost their last five matches and currently sit in 21st place in the Segunda Division, two points from safety with six matches remaining. Lopez was initially appointed to the role in 2015 and oversaw promotion at the end of his second season. He had played for Barcelona for five years and won six international caps for Spain. Barcelona have a history of promoting managers through their youth system, with former bosses Pep Guardiola (20072008) and Luis Enrique (2007-2011) having previously taken charge of Barca B.

Rafa Nadal beat Japan's Kei Nishikori in straight sets (6-3, 62) to take the Monte Carlo Masters 1000 crown on Sunday, extending his extraordinary legacy at the event. The 31-year-old Spaniard won in just 94 minutes to claim a record 11th triumph at the clay-court event. Nadal has now won 36 straight sets on his favoured surface and notched up a record 31st ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title in the process. Nishikori saved one break point in a 16-point second game of the pair’s 12th meeting, then proceeded to break Nadal’s serve with a delicate backhand winner down the line for 2-1. But Nishikori looked deflated one game later when he double-faulted to gift Nadal a way back into the set. Nadal didn’t need another invitation as he won four of the next five games finishing the 56-minute opener with a trademark forehand approach down the line. Once Nadal broke Nishikori in the third game with a crosscourt forehand winner, the second set was one-way traffic. From 0-1, Nadal won five straight games and Nishikori's challenge faded away. Nadal lost just 21 games in his five matches — against Aljaz Bedene, Karen Khachanov, Dominic Thiem, Grigor Dimitrov and Nishikori — at the Monte-Carlo Country Club, where he has a 68-4 record with 12 final appearances. It is the fifth time he has won the Monte-Carlo title without dropping a set (also 2008-10 and 2012). Nadal was competing in just his second tournament of the season, having sustained a hip injury during his Australian Open quarter-final against Marin Cilic in January. His Serene Highness Albert II, Sovereign Prince of Monaco, and his wife, Her Serene Highness The Princess of Monaco, presented Nadal with the Monte-Carlo trophy in front of a capacity crowd on Court Rainier III. Nadal received 935,385 euro in prize money and earned 1000 ATP Rankings points, keeping him at world number one, ahead of Roger Federer.

Gang In Town

Spain’s Marc Marquez overcame a grid penalty to score his sixth straight MotoGP victory at Austin in typically dominant fashion. The reigning world champion annihilated the MotoGP field to win the Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas on Sunday. Pole starter Maverick Vinales came home second while Andrea Iannone was third, holding off a midrace challenge from Valentino Rossi to take his first podium finish for Suzuki. Having been demoted to fourth place on the grid from pole for blocking fellow Spaniard, Maverick Vinales in qualifying, Marquez leapt to second into Turn 1 as Andrea Iannone took the lead. The Suzuki man's time in front proved short-lived however, as Marquez got by at Turn 12 on the opening lap. Iannone was able to stick close enough to Marquez to have a go at the Honda rider at Turn 11 on lap three, but he ran wide and was repassed by the reigning champion on the exit of the corner. Marquez proved unstoppable from that point on, opening a two-second advantage by the end of the fifth lap and doubling that margin in the following two tours. His lead peaked at around seven seconds, and he controlled the gap to take his first win of the 2018 season and his 12th straight triumph on American soil by 3.5 seconds. "My strategy was just start, push and that's it," said Marquez, who shrugged off boos from the crowd reacting to a champion whose on-track clashes with rivals have been a talking point of the season. "I didn't have confidence to battle so I was pushing from the beginning and just go away, open the gap...in Spain they will be happy." After losing touch with Marquez, Iannone soon came under pressure from Vinales, who passed for second at Turn 1 on lap seven and enjoyed an untroubled run to the runner-up spot after that. Iannone managed to hang on to third place for his first podium as a Suzuki rider, ahead of Valentino Rossi, who pressured Yamaha team-mate Vinales in the early laps but couldn't find a way through. Pre-race points leader Cal Crutchlow crashed at mid-distance during a tense scrap for fifth place, which was eventually won by Andrea Dovizioso over Tech3 Yamaha's Johann Zarco. It means Dovizioso retakes the lead of the championship by a single point from Marquez, with Vinales just five behind in third. Marquez's team-mate Dani Pedrosa salvaged seventh in a race he was unsure he would complete owing to the pain from his broken wrist. The world championship heads to Europe now for the Spanish Grand Prix at Jerez on May 6th.

STEVE’S SHOT

THE BATTLE OF BAKU Ex-Liverpool and England captain Steven Gerrard is on a shortlist to become the new manager of Rangers. The 37-year-old, who is currently a Liverpool academy coach, is viewed as a possible replacement for present manager Graeme Murty. Murty was put in charge until the end of the season after the sacking of Pedro Caixinha in October, but is not seen as a full-time contender. The Ibrox side travel to Celtic Park on Sunday, when a victory for Brendan Rodgers' side in the Glasgow derby will secure a seventh consecutive title.

EURO 2024

F1 Championship leader Sebastian Vettel returns to the scene of last year's road rage conflict with Lewis Hamilton this weekend when the title challengers contest the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. One year on from a fierce and defining on-track battle that saw the German Ferrari driver collide with the Briton's Mercedes, after claiming he was 'brake tested', Vettel has a nine-point lead over Hamilton in this year's title race. Hamilton and Mercedes are without a win after three races this year and, on recent form, appear to be struggling to defend their drivers' and teams' crowns against a resurgent Ferrari and threatening Red Bull. Both Vettel and Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo have registered victories this season and Hamilton, notably in China two weeks ago, has not shown his usual elan so far. His former Mercedes team-mate and 2016 world champion Nico Rosberg, however, is adamant that the four-time champion will bounce back stronger than ever. Rosberg said: "When he comes back, he comes back so damn strong that he's almost unbeatable - so let's see when that happens." His belief in Hamilton was echoed this week by Mercedes

team chief Toto Wolff who also noticed that the defending world champion was below his best in Shanghai. "He was, like the car, maybe not in the best place," said Wolff. "He is the best driver, in my opinion, but also the best ones have days where it is just not 100%.” Chasing down Vettel and Ferrari is not a new experience for Hamilton and Mercedes. Last season, the German led the title race for 12 races before he was caught and overhauled when Hamilton reeled off a sequence of five wins in six races that laid the foundation for his fourth title. In that run, Ferrari made errors and Red Bull were not a serious threat. This year, however, it is a different story. Following Vettel's two season-opening wins in Australia and Bahrain, Ricciardo, courted by Ferrari for 2019 and beyond, triumphed in China. He hopes another Baku win could help him cement his future. "I want to be in the best car and I proved in China that if I've got the machinery, I can do the job. If we win a few more races, with Red Bull, that makes it (staying) very attractive, but if not...there's other options."

SHOW ME THE MONEY! Germany and Turkey have both confirmed their bids to host the 2024 European Championship finals. The German Football Association (DFB) submitted its application on Tuesday, with the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) following suit yesterday. Uefa, European football's governing body, will announce the host nation on September 27th. Euro 2024 will return to a single-host format, after Euro 2020 is held in 12 cities across Europe.

Britain’s Anthony Joshua wants to "see the money" before agreeing to Deontay Wilder's $50m unification fight offer, says promoter Eddie Hearn. American heavyweight Wilder posted a video on Twitter showing WBO, IBF and WBA titles holder Joshua, 28, saying he would accept the fight for $50m. But Hearn said he must be convinced the money "exists" before agreeing to the bout "in either London or Vegas". The offer came via an email directly from WBC champion Wilder, said Hearn. In a video interview on Wednesday, Hearn also said: “The offer feels like a PR move" but they are "definitely interested" Hearn said that he would not rule out allowing Wilder's

team to pick the fight's date and location, adding that a meeting between both fighters and their advisors is set for today. Wilder's manager Shelly Finkel confirmed to ESPN that an offer had been made. Finkel also said the offer contains no rematch clause and that it would be the next fight for each boxer, taking place between September and December at a venue of Wilder's choosing. "It's a great move from Deontay. It makes everyone say: 'You've got to take the fight now'," added Hearn. Unbeaten Joshua added the WBO belt to his collection after a unanimous points win over Joseph Parker in Cardiff on 1 April, while Wilder beat Luis Ortiz in his last fight in March.
