BEACH BAR DISPUTE

A

prominent Orihuela councillor claims to have received a “flood of complaints” over the closing down of the Orihuela Costa’s beach bars, which took place last week, with local politicians squabbling over the matter. Tourism councillor Sofía Álvarez of the Partido Popular said that the shutdown was bad for tourism, in what appears to be a broadside against coastal and beaches councillor, Luisa Boné of the Ciudadanos party (pictured together last November, with Boné at the podium). Boné enforced the shutdown last week ahead of the advertising of a new contract, following the end of a four-year deal with Chiringuitos del Sol. Álvarez also pointed out that the lack of a beach bar franchise meant a lack of toilet facilities for beach goers, as well as the supply of umbrellas, sun loungers, and other key resources. There are also concerns over beaches losing their coveted “Blue Flag” status as they do not have the required facilities for the

award. The franchise holder says that they’ve already spent money on hiring equipment and staff, and they are left in the air unable to do anything, with around a hundred workers staging a demonstration at Cala Bosque on Tuesday. The sniping continued between the council coalition partners, as Luisa Boné on Tuesday blamed the council’s contracting department under Partido Popular councillor Francisco Sáez for an error over the contract dates, believing that the current franchise lasted until June this year. Boné added that she would have been willing to approve an exten-

sion to keep the service going, but the deadline had passed. Francisco Sáez said yesterday that as an announcement from Boné had been made in November over the non-renewal, and that his contracts department issued a notice after Easter to Chiringuitos stating that they had to close, as per what he believed had been previously agreed. As reported in The Courier back in November, Boné announced that an option to extend the contract for a further three years would not be taken up after Easter due to concerns over possible legal irregularities, which followed an Orihuela judge’s report suggesting that the awarding of the contract back in 2014 “could lead people to suspect that it may have been criminal in character”. The council is drafting details of a new tender, but even the most optimistic timeframe puts the process lasting at two months as a bare minimum, which means that June is pretty much wiped out for the Orihuela Costa beach bars.

Luisa Boné said that Orihuela council technicians would try and make the tender process as speedy as possible, but the councillor added every single specification would be looked at very closely to avoid any accusations of corruption and rule-bending. Last year, Orihuela’s excoastal councillor Martina Scheurer was interviewed by the National Police over fraud allegations in the beach bar contract process, which she has denied. Officers also talked to Chiringuitos del Sol’s manager Thomas Wolfalng, and Orihuela council’s technical officer with responsibility for contracts. Chiringuitos said they were told to shut down their eleven bars on Thursday April 12th and claimed that “no prior notice” was given. Chiringuitos said:- “It is our desire to return this service to the thousands of people who come every day to the Orihuela Costa. But if this decision-making process takes an extended period of time, the beaches could be left without services during the summer.”

An unnamed British man went on trial this week in Elche after a 40-year-old local resident, Scott Waring, died in January 2016, after his neck was slashed with a broken glass following a fight in a Villamartin Plaza bar. Prosecutors at the Alicante Provincial Court are calling for a 13-year jail sentence for the crime of homicide. The alleged killer, was aged 29 years at the time, and was on holiday. He fled north to Altea, before voluntarily reporting to the local Guardia Civil barracks the following day. The holidaymaker initially declined to answer questions to the Orihuela court after the Guardia brought him down there, but told the judge that he had been partying for several days before the Friday night/Saturday morning Villamartin incident and that he had no clear recollection of that night’s events. The 29-year-old has pled not guilty, and also in the dock is the British owner of the unnamed bar, who is accused of covering up the crime, because the Guardia Civil were told by the owner at the time that the brawl took place outside the premises. Investigations showed that the fight happened inside, and the bar owner is accused of clearing up the glass fragments that were

on the floor, as well as telling friends of the assailant to “leave the bar so that everything could be taken care of”. The owner’s solicitor countered that argument by stating that the owner covered up nothing; tried to help Mr. Waring; and actually called the police. On the homicide charge, the defence case is that a fight broke out, which was started by Mr. Waring and that the defendant grabbed hold of a glass to protect himself, and that what happened was an accident. Prosecutors say that the defendant hit Mr. Waring several times with the glass, causing a fatal injury to his carotid artery and jugular vein, and that he bled to death in a “mat-

ter of seconds”. The alleged assailant’s solicitor said that “there was no intention to kill the man at any time”, and used the fact that he had consumed alcohol and taken drugs as mitigating circumstances. Prosecutors reject the fact that his consumption of alcohol and drugs had reduced his mental capacity at the time. Mr. Waring was a chef in San Miguel de Salinas and father to a baby girl. The jury trial was scheduled to last for four days.

Spanish Leaders

Senior British ex-pats who have settled in Spain make up about one in seven of all British residents living in the EU, new figures suggest. Some 119,400 British citizens aged 65 or over are estimated to be living in Spain - 15% of all British people who have made their home in another mainland EU country. A further 29,300 are in France and 14,900 in Germany. In total, 784,900 British citizens live in the EU, not including the UK and Ireland. The figures have been compiled by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and are based on a 2017 snapshot of long-term residents - people who intend to or have lived abroad for one year or longer. Jay Lindop, deputy director of migration statistics at the ONS, said: "Spain continues to be the most desirable location for the threequarters of a million Brits living in the EU.” The figures estimate the Torrevieja firefighters put out a Sunday morning fire in a garage at the deserted building that was destined to be the Blue Lagoon shopping centre on the Orihuela Costa. The fire crew arrived at 6.15 am and discovered a minor fire which was caused by a homeless person who set some blankets and mattress alight. Nobody was in the building when the team from Torrevieja arrived.

overall number of British residents living in Spain to be 293,500 - 37% of the total across the EU (excluding the UK and Ireland), though that is believed to be based on registration figures on local padróns, with many Brits not bothering to renew despite extensive campaigns. That figure therefore could be considerably higher. Some 152,900 (19%) are in France, 96,500 (12%) in Germany, 45,300 (6%) in the Netherlands and 27,200 (3%) in Italy. The rights of British expats once the UK has left the European Union has been one of the key topics in Brexit negotiations. Both sides have provisionally agreed to allow Britons settling in other EU countries during the socalled transition period from the date of the UK's exit on March 29 2019 to the end of 2020 - the same rights as those currently in place. This will also apply to EU citizens arriving in the UK during the same period.

Mayor’s Forum

Robbers Detained Eleven people accused of armed robberies across Alicante Province and the Murcia region, have been arrested by the National Police. The six-month operation netted the group, who are accused of eight robberies in the two areas, with the gang leader already the subject of three arrest warrants against him. The gang, made up of different nationalities, targetted banks and businesses, and were rounded up in Alicante, Benidorm, and Elda. Firearms, tasers and cash were seized in a series of

Orihuela Mayor Emilio Bascuñana addressed a meeting of Orihuela Costa residents and groups, including the Federación de Asociaciones de Orihuela Costa (FAOC), on the back of increasing disquiet over a variety of issues. Last Thursday’s meeting at the Alameda del Mar civic centre offered little new in terms of fresh announcements, where Bascuñana reiterated previous statements, as reportedly recently by The Courier. Despite recent concerns, the Mayor once again stated that the uncompleted Emergency Centre at La Zenia would be finished by June 2019, and that a feasi-

bility study is being undertaken over the widening of the bridge over the AP-7 which links the Urbanisations at Lomas de Cabo Roig, La Cuerda, and Lomas de Golf with the coast. Flanked by councillors on the top table including beaches and coastal councillor Luisa Boné, Bascuñana’s response to a number of demands was that it all depended on budgets being provided by the regional Valencian government. That included the longstanding issue of the CV-95 road from Orihuela City to Torrevieja being upgraded to a dual carriageway, and the

need for an additional medical centre for the Orihuela Costa. Over the vexed issue of rubbish collection, where the Valencian Ombudsman ruled recently that Orihuela council should provide a better service for the Orihuela Costa, Bascuñana said that four new garbage lorries were going to be pressed into service this year. Repeat proclamations included a road resurfacing project for the Campoamor, Los Dolses, Villamartín, Playa Flamenca, La Zenia, and La Florida areas, and improvements to the promenade between Cabo Roig and Cala Capitán, as well as to the Alameda del Mar civic centre.

Orihuela and Torrevieja taxi drivers have been given the green light to pool resources during the tourist season in a bid to slash long waiting times, by stopping wasted “round-trips”. The Valencian government has approved the scheme, which will run from June 16th through to September 15th. Taxis from both municipalities will drop off and pick up customers from four spots in Torrevieja, namely the Paseo de la Libertad; the Casagrande industrial estate; the bus station; and Torrevieja Hospital. The Orihuela Costa points will be at Playa Flamenca; Zenia Boulevard (pictured); Cabo Roig; and Villamartin. On the back of last year’s censure from the Valencian Ombudsman, Orihuela council has awarded a 300thousand-euro contract to improve the green and play areas on the Orihuela Costa. Play equipment for youngsters is also to be replaced according to Orihuela spokesman, Rafael Almagro, with targeted areas including Lomas de Cabo Roig, Villapiedra, and La Florida. Some of the play areas were branded as “deathtraps” by residents groups last year in their complaint to the Valencian Ombudsman.

Above And Beyond

A Guardia Civil officer risked his life to save a group of African migrants whose dinghy was overturned by rough seas off the coast of the enclave of Ceuta in North Africa (file photo). The heroic officer was on the shore with other members of the force on 'migrant patrol', looking out for boats coming in and attending to their occupants, normally after tip-offs from Moroccan authorities alerting them of the time the crafts set sail and their likely route.

When the dinghy was nearly at the shores of Ceuta's Algarrobo beach, the storms and high tides flipped it over and all eight occupants were thrown overboard. They were dragged mercilessly by the current and battered by waves of over two metres high. Five of them managed to swim ashore, but two men and a woman were beaten back by the tides. Seeing their predicament, the Guardia Civil officer

dived into the sea to rescue them, despite the turbulent conditions that could easily have made him a victim along with the three drowning migrants. He managed to bring all three of them ashore, before they all collapsed with exhaustion on the beach. Red Cross workers on duty attended to all the migrants and to the brave officer, and they are all said to be in good health and none the worse for their ordeal.

Better Viewpoint

Over 37 thousand euro has been spent by Orihuela council to refurbish the viewpoint at the Punta Prima promenade. The finished work was inspected by beaches and coastal councillor Luisa BonĂŠ, who said the project was important as it was

one of the best vantage points on the Orihuela Costa. The worn-out pavement and broken sections of the balustrades have been replaced, in addition to the building of a wooden pergola and the supply of four benches.

Catalan Protest

Hundreds of thousands of Catalans held a demonstration in Barcelona on Sunday calling for the release from detention of separatist leaders. Police said more than 300,000 people attended, although organisers put the figure at about 750,000. Nine separatist politicians and activists have been detained for their role in October's referendum on independence from Spain -

a vote ruled illegal by the courts. The protesters also want an end to what they see as the judicial persecution of others who fled abroad and are sought on extradition warrants. Meanwhile, the Bank of Spain Governor Luis Maria Linde (pictured below) said on Monday that political tensions over a secession bid by Catalunya could damage confidence in the Spanish economy.

“Internally, political tensions in Catalunya could create a lack of confidence for investors, Linde said in a speech before parliament in Madrid. The Spanish economy has remained mostly unaffected by the Catalan independence push, but it has unnerved investors and prompted hundreds of companies to move out of the Catalan region or review investment plans there.

Counter Measure

A fog-creating machine could be a lowcost solution to traffic emissions and other air contamination – even chemical leaks and smoke from forest fires, according to its inventors from the University of Alcalá de Henares in the Madrid area. 'Counterfog', developed over four years by the team led by Professor José Luis PérezDíaz with the help of European Union funding, was formally launched last Friday at the region's air base in Torrejón de Ardoz. Members of the Armed Forces emergency response unit, who are frequently called in to help tackle major forest fires and other disasters, test-drove the machine on chemical and smoke particles.

It works using a pipe or column with a type of sprinkler system which generates fog made from clean water, and its microscopic droplets adhere to toxic particles in the air and force them to drop to the ground or other hard surfaces where they can be easily cleaned up. Madrid is expected to use it to combat air pollution caused by traffic, one of the city's most controversial and pressing issues, and it could lead to a situation where cars no longer have to be restricted from entering the main urban hub. Professor Pérez-Díaz says it is completely ready to go and just needs to be 'marketed and installed'.

Forgetful Friend A woman ended up being in a parked car for six hours in northern Spain, after her boyfriend forgot about her, locked it and went home. The couple had just come back from a wedding – not their own – and, after parking the car in Bueu in the province of Pontevedra, the man locked it and went back to his house. He had not noticed his girlfriend was inside. She was trapped there until the next morning when a local resident saw her calling for help from inside the vehicle, and rang the authorities. Police traced the carowner and went to his house to pick up the keys. When the young woman was finally freed, she insisted her being locked into the car was not a deliberate act of malice, but that her partner had not realised she was there. For that reason, she declined to press charges. The exact circumstances, and how she came to be in the car without her boyfriend noticing, have not been clarified. It is not thought they lived together.

Loophole Stopped New UK rules will fix the legal costs that can be claimed in package holiday sickness claims, closing a loophole which the travel industry believes has helped fuel a rising number of claims, especially in Spain. This “claims” epidemic, the industry fears, is raising the prospect of higher travel costs for British tourists. The rules will come into effect in the coming weeks - ensuring the curbs will be in place before the next summer holiday season. Up to now, legal costs in overseas package travel claims have not been controlled, which has meant costs for tour operators can spiral out of all proportion to the damages claimed. This has led many operators to settle holiday sickness claims out of court, rather than challenge them. Industry experts believe this has been a major factor in a rise in claims which has sparked concerns that Britain’s reputation overseas is being

damaged and that British tourists will face higher package holiday prices. The UK Ambassador to Spain, Simon Manley said: “The issue of fraudulent sickness claims has rightly caused concern in Spain, and has had a serious impact on Spanish hoteliers. “These latest measures to control legal costs, announced by the British Government, as well as the steps taken at the end of last summer, show how seriously we take this issue, and underline our determination to clamp down on loopholes and fraudulent claims. “Almost 19 million British tourists visited Spain last year and, whilst the vast majority of holidaymakers will not make false claims, these steps will help to deter those that might be tempted to do so. As our travel advice says, making a false claim could result in legal proceedings in the UK or in Spain.” According to the travel industry, there has been a substantial increase in

claims, which some have estimated to be as high as 500% in recent years. While uncontrolled costs have discouraged tour operators from challenging claims, they have also emboldened claims management companies to encourage tourists to pursue holiday sickness compensation, with touts reportedly operating in European resorts. To help tackle this, Ministers asked the Civil Procedure Rule Committee, which is responsible for setting rules on legal costs, to look at bringing package holiday claims within the fixed recoverable costs regime. This would mean tour operators would pay prescribed costs depending on the value of the claim and length of proceedings, making defence costs predictable and assisting tour operators to challenge bogus claims. The Committee has now agreed to this rule change, and will come into effect shortly.

Hairy Condition

A prisoner in Vigo has been told his sentence will be suspended – as long as he grows his hair. Identified only by his initials of A. F. C., the accused was arrested for drug-dealing in the northwestern town and is said to be a repeat offender, but is in the process of rebuilding his life. He faces three years in jail and a fine of 2,800€, and his lawyer is fighting to avoid his having to serve his sentence. Prosecutors have agreed to apply for it to be suspended as long as A. F. C. ensures his hair is never less than three centimetres. In order for his sentence

to be suspended, the accused has to prove he has been off the drugs for a certain length of time. Forensics will test samples of his hair over the next three years, since hair 'stores' information and it is possible to see how long ago a person consumed illegal drugs – or even prescription or over-the-counter medication. As human head hair grows at a rate of around a centimetre a month, A. F. C. will be required to keep his own hair at least three centimetres long so forensics can see, at any time, whether he has taken drugs in the last three months.

Rubbish Removal A quiet drink in a seafront cafe in the La Mata area of Torrevieja ended up in a bid to help the environment, thanks to two expat British couples. It all happened last week when the wind whipped up outside the cafe and a whirlwind developed with plastic bags of all shapes, sizes and colours being hurtled into the air. When they got outside, they discovered a sea of plastic bags on the nearby road where the regular Wednesday street market had been held earlier. The strong winds ended up blowing the rubbish all across a boat park and sand, and into the sea. Eileen & Tony Mayes and Pete & Kate Goodger got busy grabbing hold of the plastic, trying to stop at least some of it from getting into the water.

Three large bags full were collected, but it was only a drop in the ocean compared with all the plastics and other rubbish already in the sea and still along the market road. Tony said: “To leave a road after the market had

gone with so much rubbish in it is ridiculous. “Not one council employee or refuse lorry was to be seen. “Market traders had left loads of plastic bags on the road, all destined to be blown into the sea.”

Mussel Poisoning Smart Solution

39 elderly Costa Blanca holidaymakers went down with food poisoning after eating mussels at an unnamed hotel on based at Jávea’s Arenal beach. The Agency for Consumption, Food Safety and Nutrition (AECSAN), whom the hotel was required to notify of the incident in accordance with standard procedure, says only two of the guests needed hospital treatment. One went to the emergency room with stomach pains and was discharged hours later after being treated, whilst another remained there for two days. The 39 patients, all said to be pensioners, had been staying at the undisclosed

hotel on Jávea's most-frequented beach over the Easter weekend, but details were only disclosed at the end of last week. According to AECSAN, the mussels, designed for freezing, were labelled Mejillón media concha súper – effectively, 'supersized' open-shelled mussels – and were from the brand Estrella Polar. The mussels were caught from the sea in Galicia in northern Spain, with a packaging date of January 19th, 2018 and a use-by date of January 2020. AECSAN released the batch number – 010DOP-18 – as a precaution so supermarkets, restaurants and fishmongers would know to

remove them from the shelves. They have only been distributed in the Comunidad Valenciana and in Navarra, and as a result of AECSAN's recall, have being removed from sale. The agency received the alert last week from regional health authorities after the crisis had passed, and said the food poisoning cases were caused by the norovirus GI and GII, which was found both in the mussels and in stool samples taken from patients. Hotel sources assure that as soon as they became aware of the problem, they removed and destroyed the rogue batches and alerted the relevant authorities.

Spain’s first support centre for teenagers addicted to SmartPhones has opened in Madrid and is expected to treat up to twelvehundred patients per year. Parents concerned about their children's dependence upon their phones report behaviour such as lying to get money out of them for credit top-ups, using their mobiles in secret, a decline in their performance at school and constant tiredness through using it until the early hours of the morning. Madrid's new day centre, catering for youngsters aged between 12 and 17 years, has three full-time mental health workers specialising in addiction and four part-time. These professionals say parents should look out for increased frequency of mobile use, an abnormal amount of time and

9

money spent on their phones, and loss of interest in other activities, all of which could indicate a loss of self-control. As well as treating the teens themselves, the Assistance Centre for New Technologies provides training activities for parents and other relatives and also for professionals working with children and adolescents. Group and one-to-one therapy, family therapy and advice for parents are offered, and the centre runs prevention and awareness campaigns to nip the disorder in the bud where this is still possible. Where it is found that the child's phone use 'generates a significant alteration' in the way they lead their lives, says psychologist José Moreno Ortiz who runs the centre, a tailored treatment plan will be worked out.

Norwegian Interest

IAG, the holding company that owns British Airways and Spain’s national carrier, Iberia, has bought a stake in Norwegian Air and is considering making an offer to buy it altogether. IAG Group, formed through the merger of Iberia and British Airways, has acquired 4.61% of Norwegian's shares and has been in talks with Spain's National Markets and Competition Commission to discuss the possibility of a complete buy-out. The minority investment in Norwegian's shares is aimed at creating a position where IAG can start talks with the carrier. But it has admitted these talks with Norwegian have not taken place, and that IAG as a company has not made any firm

decisions. Norwegian's presence in Spain has grown considerably in the last few years and, in addition to its connections with its home country and its neighbours in Scandinavia, offers regular low-cost routes to a high number of destinations, including London Gatwick, which is well-connected with Spain's most frequently-used airports via Norwegian. Although its flight prices are a long way off being at the bottom end of the market, the service and facilities provided have been highly praised by new users. These facilities even include on-board, free-of-charge Wi-Fi on every flight, something very few economy-class carriers offer.

Light Sentence

A driver who killed a Welsh tech firm boss by knocking him off his bike on Menorca has received a year's suspended jail sentence. American Bryan Leeds, 25, pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of father-ofthree Phillip Rasmussen, from Aberporth, Ceredigion. Leeds was driving a rental car and was over the drinkdrive limit when he hit Mr Rasmussen, aged 47, April 1st. He agreed a plea bargain deal at a court in Mahon last week. New York-born Leeds was initially banned from returning to the United States after he was arrested and

bailed, but is now free to travel. He had been on a short holiday on the island with friends when his car hit Mr Rasmussen, who was cycling from Alcaufar to Sant Lluis near his holiday home. Leeds failed a breathalyser test with a reading of 35mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath - that is the legal limit in England and Wales but in Spain the limit is 25mg. He also failed a drugs test but had a medical receipt for amphetamine tablets found on him as part of treatment for an unidentified health condition.

Pension Protest

Pensioners went on the march again last Sunday across Spain, including Alicante City and Elche (pictured), as they continue to fight for a fair deal. Since the current Partido Popular government came into power at the end of 2011, State pensions have only gone up by the minimum stipulated by law – 0.25% every January 1st. This means pensioners are now poorer than they were six years ago, because

the increases have not kept up with inflation or rising living costs. Around 100 demonstrations took place throughout Spain on Sunday, with tens of thousands of State pensioners joining in, carrying placards and banging drums. This is the latest in a series of protests organised since September by Spain's main unions, the Labourers' Commissions (CCOO) and General Workers' Union (UGT).

Warship Deal

Saudi Arabia’s crown prince and Spain’s defence minister have signed an “executive summary to facilitate the necessary procedures” for the Saudi Defence Ministry to sign a contract with state-owned shipbuilder Navantia for the supply of warships. Reports suggest that a final deal will be worth something in the region of two billion euro. Prince Mohammed bin Salman and defence minister Maria Dolores de Cospedal put pen to paper at the at the Moncloa Palace in Madrid last week. The Saudi government said another agreement was signed between state-owned Saudi Arabian Military Industries Company and Navantia, but did not provide

11

further details. A Spanish Defence Ministry source said that under the deal, Navantia would sell five small warships, Spain’s army would train Saudi military personnel and contractors would build a naval construction centre in the kingdom. Campaign groups Amnesty International, Spain’s FundiPau, Greenpeace and Oxfam have called on Spain to stop selling military equipment to the Saudis, accusing the kingdom of abusing rights charges it denies. The two sides have been negotiating the warship deal since 2015, and the final contract between the Saudi Defence Ministry and Navantia would take longer to complete.

TO BE or NOT TO BE?

Resident or Domicile? That Is the Question By Richard Samuels DipPFS, International Financial Adviser, Blacktower Financial Management (International) Ltd. One of the most frequently asked questions asked by many of the UK nationals living here in Spain is ‘Am I resident or not?’

for many years and did not pay UK taxes. However, as previously mentioned, under UK law, a person’s domicile is considered to be the place where, although it may not be their home, they have the intention of returning.

It is a good question, and one worth finding the answer to, as your residential status when living abroad affects the way in which you pay tax and how much you pay.

And this is where Burton’s estate came unstuck. Although he had not lived in the UK for decades, did not have a property there and was buried in Switzerland, during his first marriage to Elizabeth Taylor, Burton had bought burial plots in his home town of Pontrhydyfen in Wales. As such, HMRC successfully argued that he was still domiciled in the UK as he had the intention of returning there, consequently reaping £2.4m in inheritance tax.

As a rule of thumb, as a Brit living in Spain you will be considered to be fiscal or tax resident if you remain in Spainfor 183 days or more in any tax year. (The tax year in Spain runs from 1st January to 31st December.) Getting your ‘residencia’ rubber-stamps this, as you are registered with both the tax office (Hacienda) and the police, effectively putting you on the radar. However, if you leave Spain and retain a home in the UK for at least 91 consecutive days, you may still be deemed to be tax resident in the UK if you are present in it on at least 30 days during the UK tax year. You do not have to own the property for this rule to count. If you carry out full-time work in the UK for at least 1 year you will also be deemed to be a UK tax resident. Income derived in the UK is taxable in the UK, so that would include rental income from a property in the UK. Also, some income is taxed at source in the UK, such as private pensions via PAYE. However, this does not mean that this is exempt from tax in Spain. From the above, you can see it is possible to be liable to pay tax in both the UK and Spain. However, to avoid this problem, the UK has negotiated double tax treaties (DTAs) with over 100 countries including Spain. Spanish residents can therefore receive tax relief on most types of income that has already been taxed in the UK. As the personal allowances in Spain are generally lower than the UK, there could be a difference or shortfall still to pay in Spain. Basically, if you are a Spanish tax resident, you will need to pay income tax on your worldwide income. However, a nonresident of Spain is only required to pay tax in Spain on any Spanish income. A good ‘asesoria’ or tax adviser should ensure the DTA is used to ensure you pay the correct amount of tax, and not pay tax twice.

Domicile is a legal term which is different from residence or nationality. A person’s domicile is the country which is their natural home, to which they would expect eventually to return if they went abroad. For many retired Brits living here, their country of domicile is particularly important when considering their liabilities under inheritance tax law. Most UK expats consider their domicile to be the country where they were born. In fact, it is usually the country where their father was born. Your domicile can be changed in exceptional circumstances to be the country that you have chosen to make your permanent home, but this involves severing significant ties with your home country and being a permanent resident abroad for at least 15 years. Changing your domicile is not an easy thing, and can prove to be particularly troublesome, especially for UK nationals, as a UK domicile means you could be liable for UK Inheritance tax on your worldwide assets. So that would include a Spanish property, for example. One of the most famous examples of someone falling foul of inheritance tax due to domicile status is that of Richard Burton. Although born in the UK, Burton had lived in the US for 27 years and died in Geneva, where he had taken residence for tax purposes. Upon his death, HMRC pursued a claim for inheritance tax. This may seem unreasonable, as he had not lived in the UK

Although you may not have the same wealth as Richard Burton, it is nonetheless important to understand the implications your residential status has on your inheritance tax liabilities both here in Spain and in your country of domicile, which for most of us is the UK. Many dog owners are used to their pets wolfing down their meals as fast as possible so when a dog won’t eat it can be very upsetting. This condition can occur for a number of reasons. Most of the time your dog will start eating again after he skips a meal or two. Here are some things to look for if your dog isn’t eating and what you can do to get him back to normal. TEMPORARY UPSET If your dog won’t eat, it’s possible that he could have a temporary gastrointestinal upset. Look for signs that he has some diarrhoea or notice if he has vomited somewhere. Your dog’s body will attempt to get rid of whatever he has eaten that has upset his digestion. In the meantime, he won’t feel much like eating. As long as there is no blood in the stool or vomit, you should allow your dog to expel the offending matter from his system, provided he doesn’t become dehydrated. If the vomiting or diarrhoea lasts more than 24 hours, take your dog to the vets. ROUTINE CHANGE If you change the time you feed your dog, change the time you take walks or potty your dog, or make serious changes in your household such as adding a family member, a dog can easily stop eating. Dogs like routine and anything that upsets what they are familiar with can make them stop eating, at least temporarily, until they feel secure again. It’s best to make any changes gradually and make sure that your dog feels secure and included in what’s happening in your home. BEHAVIOUR PROBLEMS Some dogs may stop eating because of behaviour problems, which are not always caused by the dog who won’t eat. If you have another dog or pet in the home, your dog could be reacting to that pet. . He may prefer to eat alone so he can take his time. If you have multiple dogs, it’s often a good idea to feed them separately – in separate rooms or in crates – so each dog can eat in peace. Dogs will often start eating again when they are left alone with their food. OLDER DOGS Too often owners assume a senior dog won’t eat because he

is getting old when in reality the problem could be something that is easily remedied. For example, a senior dog can have dental problems which make it hard for him to eat his ordinary food. A trip to the vet to examine your dog’s teeth can reveal the problem and allow the vet to fix it. You can also warm a senior dog’s food and heat it to make it smell and taste more appealing to him since the senses begin to fade as a dog gets older. Try topping the food with some stew or something else tasty. PICKY EATERS Dogs are not born picky eaters – owners make them that way. If your dog won’t eat and you are feeding him a good quality food that he normally likes, put the food down and leave it for fifteen minutes. If your dog has not eaten it in that time, pick the bowl up and put it away. Do not give your dog treats or snacks during the day. Do not feed your dog any other food until it’s time for his next meal. Your dog will eat when he gets hungry. If you feed meals at a regular time each day and monitor how much you feed, and how much your dog eats, and keep the treats to a reasonable amount, your dog will stop being a picky eater. If you change dog food frequently, your dog will be picky about his food. It’s better to find a good food and stay with it. The more you change dog foods, the more likely your dog is to suffer from gastrointestinal upsets, which will lead to missing meals. Find a good food that your dog does well on and stick with it, even when you hear about new foods. If your dog is healthy and happy on a food, there’s really no reason to change. Remember that dogs don’t like change! These are the major reasons why a dog won’t eat, barring illness. If your dog won’t eat after 24 hours, you should take him to the vet. It’s possible that your dog could be sick and your vet will need to check him out and start looking for more serious reasons why your dog is not eating. He or she will ask you about any other possible symptoms your dog may be exhibiting, so be prepared to discuss your dog’s overall health.

Vueling Strike

Prison Plea

Pilots at Spanish low-cost airline Vueling plan are to go on strike for four days this month and in May in a dispute over contracts, according to the national pilots union SEPLA. The pilots will walk out for 24 hours on April 25th and 26th, and May 3rd and 4th, SEPLA said. A SEPLA spokeswoman said the pilots alleged the company was not fulfilling conditions of their employment agreements.

Open Top Dance Authorities in a Costa Blanca town have launched an investigation after a video of two young women dancing on top of a moving car went viral on Facebook. Footage shows the girls in various precarious positions – on one leg or in semihandstand mode at one point – while the car is being driven out of Jávea towards the Montgó mountain and the road over the top to neighbouring Dénia. Jávea police have passed the video, taken by the driver behind – and which shows the girls dancing to the number one hit single Lo Malo by Aitana – to a judge and investigations are under way. Both women have reportedly been identified, and the driver – a man – has given a statement to the police.

Almeria schoolboy Gabriel Cruz's killer has written an open letter from prison to a Spanish TV show saying the eight-year-old's death was 'an accident' and begging for forgiveness. “I got scared, and fear blocks you and makes you act this way,” Ana Julia Quezada (pictured) said, apparently referring to her having attempted to hide the child's body before he was found in the boot of her car after more than two weeks of searching. Quezada wrote to the Programa de Ana Rosa show on Telecinco, from El Acebuche prison in Almería where she has been remanded in custody without bail. She says she is 'not doing well at all' and has apologised to 'all Gabriel's family' and to 'everyone else' she may have 'harmed'. Quezada, 43, says she is not able to give too much detail since her case remains sub judice, but that she has been 'badly affect-

ed' by the 'lies' told about her. “It was an accident, and I'll always say this because it's the truth,” she stated. “I was not strong enough to tell my partner, or anyone, what had happened and, as time went on, I gradually found myself digging a bigger and bigger hole for myself. “I know I have no excuse for the accident; I've robbed the person I love most in the world of the greatest thing anyone can have – a child. Quezada's daughter, who lives with her father in Burgos, was reportedly hospitalised with a panic attack after learning from the media that her mother had been arrested in connection with Gabriel's death. But Quezada says she 'still needs to be treated like a human being'. “What has been said matches my statement, but what I don't think is normal is for a black plastic doll to be put in a town square and set fire to as though it was me.”

Recently, a group of residents in the town of Judas de Coripe in Sevilla province did precisely that, shouting, “now it's your turn to get killed, and we hope you get killed in prison.” Gabriel's parents have condemned the burning of the effigy, and the mayor of Judas de Coripe has already apologised to them for the incident on behalf of his residents. Gabriel Cruz disappeared just after lunch on February 27 when he left his grandmother's house in a rural hamlet near Níjar to play at his cousins' house 100 metres away. Quezada was the only other person at the grandmother's home at the time, and left minutes after the child did so. He never reached his cousins' home and the postmortem showed he had suffered a blow to the head and that the cause of death was suffocation, within a maximum of two hours after lunch.

Fresh Kirsty Appeal

The family of a Scots woman who died following a Costa Blanca hen party, has appealed for two potential witnesses to come forward after receiving new information. Kirsty Maxwell, from Livingston in West Lothian, died on April 29th last year in Benidorm after falling from the 10th floor of the

Apartmentos Payma hotel. Now the family has called for two potential witnesses to come forward after finding new information while looking for answers about the 27-year-old’s death. They are described as an English-speaking man who was staying at a nearby hotel and a customer at a cafe who said they saw a

woman either climbing or falling from a balcony. A statement said: “As a result of inquiries we have new information about an English-speaking man who saw Kirsty’s body at the pool before the police attended. He was staying on the 9th floor of Hotel Presidente and was checking out that morning.”

Flight Ruling

Passengers left stranded due to flight delays or cancellations as a result of the airline staff being on strike are entitled to compensation, the European Court of Justice has ruled. Travellers who have missed their scheduled services and, although in most cases, who would have been placed on another flight, or given a refund if requested, are still able to claim damages, according to the Court. Carriers cannot legally cite 'circumstances outside their control' as a reason not to pay up – even if the strike itself is illegal. “The risks arising from the social consequences of a company restructure are part of the inherent and normal activity of an air-

15

line,” the verdict, which sets a precedent and reinforces existing EU law, states. In other words, flight companies must expect an unsolved labour dispute may result in a strike, and they are considered to be in control of this, particularly as workers in EU member States have the right to go on strike if the correct procedures are followed. According to consumer advice centre AirHelp, passengers have up to three years after their cancellation or delay to make a claim. They should first apply to the airline itself and, if this is not successful, passengers travelling from Spain when they are affected should make a claim against the State Air Security Agency (AESA).

Pasta Isn't As Unhealthy As You Might Think The research found pasta could actually help you lose weight. Pasta tends to have a bad rep when it comes to healthy eating and weight gain, with people resisting its delicious lure in favour of lower-carb options. But a new study suggests your favourite Italian dish can be enjoyed as part of a healthy diet, as long as it’s eaten in moderation. In fact, people who ate it regularly even lost weight (albeit a small amount). Researchers at St Michael’s Hospital, in Toronto, undertook a review of existing data from 30 previous studies involving almost 2,500 people, who ate pasta instead of other carbohydrates. Participants involved in the trials ate 3.3 servings of

pasta each week on average, replacing other carbs they usually opt for. Within

the trials, one serving equaled around half a cup of cooked pasta.

Not only did the participants not gain weight over the course of 12 weeks, but they

lost around 0.5 kilograms per person on average. Unlike most ‘refined’ carbohydrates, which are rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream, pasta has a low glycemic index (low GI), meaning it causes smaller increases in blood sugar levels than those caused by eating foods with a high GI. The review, published in the journal BMJ Open, focussed on people eating a low GI diet, including pasta. “The study found that pasta didn’t contribute to weight gain or increase in body fat,” said lead author Dr John Sievenpiper, a scientist with the hospital’s clinical nutrition and risk modification centre. “In fact, analysis actually

showed a small weight loss. So contrary to concerns, perhaps pasta can be part of a healthy diet such as a low GI diet.” The study authors stressed that these results only associated pasta with no weight gain when it was consumed as part of a healthy, balanced, low GI diet. They cautioned more work is needed to determine if the results will extend to pasta as part of other healthy diets. “In weighing the evidence, we can now say with some confidence that pasta does not have an adverse effect on body weight outcomes when it is consumed as part of a healthy dietary pattern,” said Dr Sievenpiper.

How To Stop Back Pain Before It Starts Whether you’re sitting at a desk all day, lifting heavy weights on a construction site or rushed off your feet doing the school run, most of us will experience back pain at some point in our lives. But recent research published in the Lancet journal suggests many people may not be getting the best advice when they seek medical help for the problem. Frequently prescribed

painkillers and rest do little to help back pain, the researchers argue. Instead, most cases of back pain are best managed through keeping active. This is also a key principle of preventing back pain from occurring the first place. Both Ashley James, spokesperson for the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP), and Dr Steve Iley, medical director at Bupa UK, say regular

exercise is one of the most important things you can do in order to maintain a healthy back. “Having a strong core can really help support your back. Building strength in your abs and back muscles can alleviate some of the pressure on your lower spine, preventing the likelihood of long-term damage, and helping to correct any postural issues or prevent existing pain getting worse,”

Dr Iley said. “Yoga and pilates are a great way to develop muscles and relieve pressure on our backs, and can also help to soothe existing strain. Building our strength and flexibility can relieve back soreness and improve our mobility.” While James agrees yoga and pilates are beneficial, he notes core stability isn’t “the be-all and end-all of preventing back pain” and other types of exercise, from walking to swimming, to playing football or dancing around your kitchen, are just as valuable. “In fact, there’s no one type of exercise that’s been proven to be better than the other,” he tells HuffPost UK. “The best form of activity to prevent back pain is one that you enjoy, because that’s one that you’re going to stick to. Try to find something you can commit to doing regularly. If you don’t like yoga, there’s no point starting yoga.” As well as taking planned exercise, James says staying active throughout the day via small movements can be key to avoiding the build up of tension in the back and shoulders, especially if you’re desk-bound. “Try not to sit down for too long in one position,” he says. ”Move little and often, if you have the opportunity every 15 minutes, stand up, move around your desk, have a little wiggle and sit back down.” Whether you’re sitting at a desk or completing manual labour, Dr Iley says having good posture can alleviate some of the strain on your spine, muscles and ligaments from day-to-day life, preventing aches and pains. “Try to keep a straight back with your shoulders back

and down, we tend to round our shoulders or hunch them,” he says. In order to have the energy to keep moving during the day, sleep is an essential part of back health. James says a good night’s kip is also important to help the muscles recover from the day. “People who don’t sleep well experience higher levels of

back, which may help prevent bending your back in an unnatural way “which potentially makes the pain worse”. You may feel your body stiffen more in times of stress, such as your shoulders feeling more tight or your lower back beginning to ache. According to James, our mental health can have a big impact on our back

pain,” he says. “There’s really no magic position that can prevent pain, but comfort is key. It doesn’t matter whether you’ve got a hard mattress or a soft mattress to a certain extent, as long as you’re comfortable.” If you can feel back pain creeping in, Dr Iley says making sure your spine is supported in bed can help nip it in the bud. He recommends putting a pillow under your knees and lower

health, and there’s “plenty of research out there to show stress and anxiety change the way we move”. Because of this, he recommends taking some time up to work on your wellbeing and address any underlying issues that may be causing stress in your life. Speak to your GP if you are concerned about your mental health, or see our tips for practising self-care in 2018 for more general advice.

Getting into the spirit: Where to sample the world’s top tipples

Wine has long been a draw for travellers the world over, and we’ve all seen the recent rise in craft-beer tourism, but now travel in search of supreme spirits is booming and with good reason. Let’s face it, to really appreciate a peaty whisky or honeysmooth tawny port, you need to taste them at the source – shaken or stirred with a splash of history and a squeeze of local culture. From pisco sours in Peru to gin infused with hand-foraged botanicals in Wales, get ready to raise a glass to our pick of the distillery crop.

19

of fine dining, foraging for ingredients like heather, gorse and juniper on the slopes of Mount Snowdon and a tasting courtesy of the highly innovative Snowdonia Distillery.

You can get the inside scoop on absinthe – and, of course, get a taste of the tricksy stuff in the bar afterwards – at the Maison de l’Absinthe, an interactive museum dedicated to the

Pisco in Ica, Peru On the fringes of the desert in southern Peru, Ica is both the country’s finest wine producer and arguably the true birthplace of pisco (‘arguably’ because Chile also lays claim to the honour). The origins of this feisty, colourless spirit – essentially an unaged brandy distilled from grape must and juice – hail back to the early days of the Spanish colony in the 16th century, when it was distilled on private haciendas (large estates or plantations) and sold to sailors heading through the nearby port of Pisco. Back then it was cheap firewater guzzled in excess despite producing the hangover from hell.

history and heritage of this potent spirit.

Whisky on Islay, Scotland Ask a Scot to rattle off their top whiskies and those produced on Islay (eye-lah) in the Inner Hebrides invariably make the grade. Islay may have mellower beauty than, say, Skye or Mull, but the real drama is in its distilleries, marked out with bold, black letters on whitewash and gazing out to a brooding sea.

The powerfully peaty, multi-award-winning single malts made at Ardbeg are legendary, particularly their smoky, complex Ten Years Old. This southerly distillery has a cracking visitor centre and tours and tastings that include hikes and historical storytelling. Much newer to the scene is farm distillery Kilchoman, which showcases the entire production process, from growing and malting barley to bottling by hand. Award-winning Laphroaig – revered for its richly flavoured whiskies – offers highly immersive tours; the 4½-hour ‘Water to Whisky’ experience takes you from peat cutting to picnic, before you're whisked off to a distillery tour and tasting. Tequila in Jalisco, Mexico Ay, tequila! Few spirits come with such a notorious reputation as tequila, but there’s more to this drink than the usual shotslamming, mouth-twisting, lemon-licking, headache-inducing madness would have you believe. True tequila, made from the fermented juice of the blue agave plant that grows in rocky volcanic soils in Mexico’s Jalisco state, is actually best enjoyed in small sips from larger glasses that allow the flavours to open properly.

Any tequila aficionados worth their salt will know that there are three stages of ageing: blanco (pure, crisp and unaged), reposado (softer, rested in oak barrels for a short period) and añejo (aged and complex). To dive into the tequila world proper, hook onto a distillery tour in Mexico’s eponymous town or in the state capital Guadalajara, which take visitors out to small-batch producers in the sunbaked countryside. Gin in Snowdonia, Wales The global thirst for gin shows no sign of waning and distilleries are popping up all the time with increasingly creative botanicals and bottle designs that deserve pride of place on the mantelpiece. Gin has been much loved by the Brits for centuries, reaching its zenith during the ‘Gin Craze’ in the early 18th century, which (quite literally) brought London to its drunken knees. Times have changed dramatically and gin is no longer a cheap and cheerful staple, but a carefully-crafted, classy spirit. There’s no better example of this volte-face than the recentlylaunched gin venture at Palé Hall, a lavish Victorian mansion on the fringes of Snowdonia National Park. Settle in for a weekend

Nowadays it’s far more sophisticated in its frothy cocktail form: pisco sour (with lime, sugar and egg white). A number of hacienda distilleries open their doors for visitors in the vinestriped Ica region – among them the much-lauded and awardwinning Tacama. In Cuzco, the Museo del Pisco extols the virtues of the national drink and its bar has an encyclopedic list of piscos. Port wine in Porto, Portugal If your idea of port wine is a sickly-sweet, after-dinner tipple wheeled out by your grandparents at Christmas, you clearly haven’t yet tried the good stuff. And for that you really need to head to the port wine lodges that rise high and mighty above the Douro River in the Vila Nova de Gaia district of Porto itself. Here you’ll be winged back to the 17th-century origins of this fortified wine on guided cellar tours (usually followed by a tasting of three different ports). The choice is quite overwhelming, but for our money, top

Jenever in Amsterdam, Holland Jenever may go by the moniker ‘Dutch gin’, but these two spirits deserve individual recognition. Sure, they are both juniper-based, infused with botanicals and contain malt wine, but jenever stands as the original spirit from which gin was derived. It comes in two styles: oude (old-style, with a higher percentage of malt wine) or jonge (new-style, lighter, with a lower percentage of malt wine). In the late-16th century jenever was being sold as a medicine,

and over the years has been concocted will all manner of ingredients from grains to molasses. You can learn about the origins and distilling process of this Dutch tipple at the House of Bols in Amsterdam, and can mull over all your new-found knowledge with a complimentary cocktail post-tour. Wynand Fockink, an intimate tasting house dating to 1679, has scores of different jenevers to try, including the house special boswandeling (secret of the forest) – a tangy blend of young jenever, herb bitters and orange liqueur. Rum in Barbados Barbados draws visitors in with a myriad of amazing attributes – sublime sandy beaches, colourful cuisine, laidbacks locals – but they leave talking (in between hiccups) about the rum! Home to one of the world’s oldest commercial distilleries, Barbados is heralded as the birthplace of rum. And the Caribbean island has never stopped celebrating the delights of its syrupy golden nectar. In fact, its ‘Story of Sugar and Rum’ – encompassing the island's historic sugar plantations and distilleries – now features on Unesco’s tentative list of cultural heritage sites.

billing goes to British-run Taylor’s, founded in 1692, and Graham’s whose aged tawnies are pure nectar. Both lodges have staggering views over Porto from their hilltop perches. For an expertly mixed port-tonic, Diogo at Prova in downtown Porto is your man. Absinthe in Val-de-Travers, Switzerland ‘Brain-warming, idea-changing liquid alchemy’ is how Hemingway so eloquently described absinthe – and who are we to disagree? Dubbed the ‘Green Fairy’ by the literati back at the turn of the 20th century, absinthe was banned and reviled for a century because of its supposed hallucinogenic properties. Now this lurid-green, anise-flavoured spirit, infused with botanicals including native wormwood, is back en vogue in the Val-deTravers, the forested valley where it was invented, which sidles up to the French border in northwest Switzerland.

First distilled in the 17th century by slaves who fermented molasses, a byproduct of the sugar-refining process, rum is now a staple spirit across the world. For purists, however, the real deal is produced in its homeland. For an insight into the rummaking magic, join a distillery tour at Mount Gay, whose aged rums are some of Barbados’ best, or visit the hyper-traditional St Nicholas Abbey plantation house, a Jacobean-style mansion presiding over a lush valley.

Spring Chicken Pie

Ingredients 2 lemons 500 g Jersey Royals ½ a bunch of fresh tarragon 1 bunch of fresh flat-leaf parsley 8 free-range chicken thighs, bone in, skin on, from sustainable sources 6 cloves of garlic olive oil

50 g unsalted butter 2 tablespoons plain flour 400 ml organic chicken stock 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard 75 g watercress 5 sheets of filo pastry Method Preheat the oven to 190ÂşC/375ÂşF/gas 5. Halve the lemons, quarter

the Jersey Royals, then pick and finely chop the tarragon and parsley. Put the chicken, unpeeled garlic cloves, lemon and potatoes in a large baking tray, drizzle with oil, season with sea salt and black pepper, then toss together. Pop in the oven for 45 minutes, or until golden, crispy and cooked. Remove from the oven and allow to cool.

Melt the butter in a large non-stick pan until bubbling. Add the flour and stir for 1 to 2 minutes to form a paste, then slowly pour in the stock, whisking until thickened. bones. Squeeze the garlic from its skins back into the roasting tray and squeeze over all the juice from the lemons and toss well. Pour over the thickened stock and add the herbs and watercress. Check the seasoning, then finely chop the chicken skins and sprinkle over the filling. Lay out sheets of filo on a

.com THE MOORS AND CHRISTIANS FIESTA IN ALCOY

The town of Alcoy, also known as Alcoi in valenciano, will hold its annual Moors and Christians Fiesta between Sunday 22 and Tuesday 24 April. It is an amazing three-day event filled with brilliant costumes, replica weapons, parades, bands, battles and of course the odd firework here and there!

Nowhere is the re-enactment of the Moros y Cristianos festivity as spectacular as it is in Alcoy. The three-day fiesta commemorates events that took place in the XIII century (1276), in the times of Jaime I the Conqueror, when the city was attacked by troops led by the Moorish captain, Al-Azraq. According to the legend, St. George appeared on horseback and came to the aid of the city. To show their gratitude, the townspeople promised to build a church in his honour, and to hold annual festivities. In Alcoy this spectacle has been declared of International Tourist Interest. Between Sunday 22 and Tuesday 24 of April, Alcoy will celebrate in a euphoric explosion of joy, and the city will be adorned with thousands of white flags with St. George's cross on, and just as many green pennants with the crescent moon of Islam. La Diana (a military call to wake up the inhabitants), processions, and ‘entradas’ (entrance processions) all follow on, setting the scene for the taking of the castle by the Moors and the recapturing by the Christians. The constant beating of the kettledrums, the trumpets, the mass firing of the arquebuses (harquebus, a type of oldfashioned weapon like a musket) in the heat of battle, the smell of gunpowder, the smoke... It's very impressive and really not a sight to be missed! The two entrance parades or ‘entradas’ take place on the first day, the Christian troops in the morning and the Moors in the afternoon. There are 28 ‘filas’ (associations) in total and each parade has over 4,500 participants, which is why it takes a whole day! The lavish colours of the costumes, the music, the Baroque style of the banners, and the twirls and turns made by los ‘cabos de escuadras’ (the sergeants of each army division) fill the watching crowds with an air of unreality. The second day falls on Monday 23 April, and is the feast day of St. George. This is a day when the religious aspects are remembered, in the chapel, with the procession of the relic, and in the figure of San Jordiet, a boy who is younger than eight dressed as a Roman soldier. The 24th is el Día del Alardo (the day of the battle). The day starts with a parley, a verbal battle between the ambassadors from the two sides. This followed by a re-enactment of the gun battle with both Moors and Christians firing their booming arquebuses (antique-style muskets) leaving the city submerged in smoke and the atmosphere of a great battle. The Christians wearing armour and the Moors in their cloaks begin to fight a battle that every year, since 1276, ends in victory for the Christians. Then, when peace reigns, San Jordiet appears on the battlements of the castle to the cheering of the public, officially ending the festivities until next year.

TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

No wonder traditional broadcasters around the world keep getting worried at what the likes of Netflix are producing (The Crown, House of Cards, Stranger Things), with the internet streamer coming up with yet another new high quality show. This time we have a big budget remake of the sixties cult classic, Lost In Space, and thank heavens that this is miles better than the dreadful movie version some two decades ago. The original Lost in Space tv show was done on a five dollar budget and was as camp as custard, so don’t expect that in the Netflix revival, but you do get a great story that nods to the Irwin Allen original with the use of the classic John Williams composed-theme and a new “robot” that utters the line, “Danger, Will Robinson!” (No spoilers here). Yes, we do get the Robinsons leaving an environmentally damaged Earth for a new life, but the family is far from cutsie as dad (Toby Stephens….Maggie Smith’s boy) gets back to

Another Netflix Winner

his clan after a chequered past, and things go wrong after an alien attack on a space station. The Robinsons are great characters with the two girls being strong willed and with attitude, plus mum (scientist Maureen, played by Molly Parker) is as tough as old boots, whilst young Will is far from being annoying and has a lot of charm mixed in with common sense. There are plenty of other characters as the Robinsons are not on their own. Most notably Parker

Posey plays the baddie, who takes over literally as Dr. Zachary Smith. She apparently has the manipulative powers of Pat Phelan from Coronation Street, and almost steals the whole show. Lost In Space is first and foremost a tale about family and survival which can be enjoyed by viewers of all ages, as well as by those who don’t really care about science fiction. There’s excitement and touching moments in a series that has the potential to run for a few years, which is exactly what Netflix

wants, and Lost In Space thoroughly deserves to join the regular roster of “mustwatch” Netlfix dramas. One thing that Netflix is absolutely aware, besides keeping subscriptions to frankly peanuts (which is why does so well against other pay options) is the need to keep on creating, which is why in recent months they have bagged the biggest two producers in US television right now, namely Ryan Murphy (American Crime and Horror stories; Glee; Feud; and 911/Emergency) and Shonda Rhimes (Grey’s

Anatomy; Scandal; and How to Get Away with Murder). Their current projects stay where they are, but anything new, backed up by multi-million dollar deals, goes straight to Netflix, but a slight warning here. Even people like Murphy and Rhimes can produce duds, like the new Rhimes legal drama For The People on ABC, which is as dull as dishwater, and certain to be pulled. Netflix has ridden to the rescue of one of my favourite tv shows, The Last Kingdom, which it has totally

taken over from a cashstrapped BBC. The second series featuring the adventures of Uhtred and his relationship with King Alfred was superior fare, yet viewing ratings were mediocre in Britain, with Netflix co-funding that run, which did extremely well internationally for it. The Beeb pulled out (presumably because of money, but they’ve said nothing), and now Netflix has it all exclusively to itself, with a bigger budget and more episodes for series three which is currently in production. There’s also now the very strongly possibility that all of Bernard Cornwell’s Saxon novels will now be adapted, which would not have happened with the BBC. It’s another example of the streaming threat that the old club of broadcasters are facing, and frankly they will struggle to compete, unless they do drama co-production deals in order to defray increasing costs. This is a far deadlier enemy for the traditional outlets than satellite and cable ever was.

Meanwhile, when Arshad discovers that his CCTV has been vandalised, he tells Masood that they should call the police and social services. Elsewhere, knowing her future in Walford is under threat, Tiffany tries to make it up to Whitney by arranging another video call date for her and Halfway. However, Whitney fears for Halfway's safety when he doesn't answer.

Monday Ian and Masood's joint business gets off to a bad start when Ian tries to cut Masood out of an interview he's arranged to drum up publicity. Later on, there's a distraction for everyone when the opening of the new car lot attracts much attention on the Square. Ian is in for a shock when he sees that Max Branning is behind it. Meanwhile, newcomer Chloe arrives on Albert Square and pretends to be injured in order to capture Arshad's attention. When they get talking, Chloe begins asking questions about Harley. Arshad is unsettled by her behaviour, but is unaware that she's actually Harley's mother.

Thursday - Arshad and Masood are horrified to find that Harley has been snatched by his biological parents. Masood is quick to blame Tiffany after she posted a picture of Harley online. When the police get involved and launch a search, there's relief all round when Harley is returned to Arshad. Meanwhile, Tiffany feels terrible over the consequences of her thoughtless behaviour and packs her bags. She receives unlikely support from Keegan, who tries to comfort her at the park. Elsewhere, Sharon warns Max that Phil won't be happy about the car lot, but Max isn't scared.

Elsewhere, Aidan says he is going to get rid of Summer's notebook to avoid any embarrassment. Also, Audrey, Gail and Bethany confront David about Emma and his recent behaviour.

New Ford Focus revealed in London

It doesn’t seem like 20 years since Ford launched the Focus but in truth Henry’s Escort replacement is part of the scenery in the UK, where it has hovered in the top-five best seller list for the last two decades. As well as sales of 1.97 million here, it’s done alright in the rest of the world, too – 16 million have found homes globally, with even the Pope having used one at times. So now we get Mark IV version. Visibly bigger (though we’re to come back to that), 50kg lighter, 10 per cent more economical, and cheaper, this new vision of family motoring was launched in what is, with the possible exception of the Goodwin Sands, the least car-friendly site in the UK. ‘Here East’ in the Olympic Park in East London does at least partially fulfill Ford’s global ambitions to be a modern digital mobility company, but beyond that the choice was baffling. “It’s a unique space for entrepreneurs, tech specialists, businesses and academics to come together in pursuit of new ideas,” waffled Steven Armstrong, president of Ford of

Europe. “We’ve chosen this place to locate our Ford Smart Mobility Innovation Office. He was followed by several more Blue Oval grand panjandrums, not one of which could bring themselves to mention the actual car until eventually Joe Bakaj, head of European product development, called the launch to order and explained that while the new Focus looks bigger, it’s actually about the same size as the outgoing model. New Focus is also a very rare thing; a virtually all-new, non-premium car. Fierce competition in these workaday segments means companies often have to adopt carryover parts, drivetrains and sometimes even doors and windows to make 'new' models economical. Not so the Focus, which is a fresh machine from bumper to bumper.” Bakaj also claims that Focus Four is also as good to drive, though we’d like to try that for ourselves. Even the engines (a 1.0-litre and 1.5 litre petrol, and a 1.5-litre diesel) are uprated and given automatic stop-start and cylinder deactivation systems to save fuel, and there’s a new eight-speed automatic transmission option.

COMFORT IS THE NEW COOL

Citroën has revealed a new advertising campaign for the recently launched New C4 Cactus, the ultra-comfortable hatchback. The campaign, developed with the advertising agency Traction, is inspired by people and their increasingly busy lives. The advert highlights all the benefits of Citroën’s new suspension technology with Progressive Hydraulic Cushions™ (PHC™), which makes its European debut on New C4 Cactus. The film ‘The Mug’ showcases the busy morning routine of a father and his family. Eating breakfast, dropping the children off at school and going to work. Caught up in the morning rush, the father forgets his coffee on the roof of the car. Due to the exceptional performance of Citroën’s suspension with PHC™, the mug remains on the roof for his entire commute, which he then retrieves before rushing into the office. This campaign demonstrates the brand’s ‘Inspired By You’ positioning, because ‘Citroën knows that life is hectic enough’. Benefitting from the Citroën Advanced Comfort® programme, New C4 Cactus

is the first car in the range with all of the Citroën Advanced Comfort® features. The ultra-comfortable hatch is the first model in Europe to feature Citroën’s suspension with Progressive Hydraulic Cushions™, which creates a ‘flying carpet’ effect. It is also the first model in the world to offer Advanced Comfort® seats featuring new high-density foam that improves seating comfort for both the driver and passengers. New C4 Cactus has 12 driver assistance systems and three connectivity technologies available as well as a wide range of efficient engines. The soundtrack used in the TV ad is by French band, Superjava. In line with the French origins of the brand, ‘All in all’ is a bright and sunny electro-pop track, sung by four guys - Archibald, Alexandre, Arnaud and Julian - who express themselves, in a ‘feel good’ dance style. The band also performed live at the New C4 Cactus reveal in Paris. This song is in line with similar soundtracks used for previous campaigns including Part Time Friends (Citroën C3), Blow (New C3 Aircross) and Naive New Beaters (SpaceTourer).

Rahm’s Home Success

World number four Jon Rahm won the Spanish Open to claim his third European Tour title in Madrid last Sunday, after holding his nerve against fellow Spaniard Nacho Elvira and Irishman Paul Dunne in a tight finale. Rahm began the day third on the leaderboard, two shots behind Dunne, who had set the pace in the first three rounds, and one behind Elvira. He signed off, however, with an impressive five-under 67 to win by two shots, finishing with a 20-under-par total of 268, as Dunne and Elvira both carded final-day 71s. Basque Country native Rahm returned to Spain less than a week after finishing fourth in the Masters. He was hunting a first national title as a professional to add to his two previous European Tour wins in Dublin and Dubai last year. He becomes the sixth Spaniard to win the Spanish Open since it became part of the European Tour in 1972, joining some illustrious company including Seve Ballesteros, Sergio Garcia and Miguel Angel Jimenez. “When I made the decision to come straight from Augusta it wouldn’t be to just show up and walk around, I wanted to win this tournament,” Rahm told reporters. “I’ve been blessed to be national champion from 16 to all ages in Spain. To round my amateur and pro career together in this way and win the last one I had to win and join that prestigious list of Spanish winners, it’s hard to explain how good it feels and how satisfying it is.” The 23-year-old sneaked ahead overall after the fourth hole before Elvira got his nose in front with an eagle on the fifth. Rahm, who had birdied three of the opening seven holes, bogeyed the ninth to open up a three-way tie at the top of the leaderboard. Rahm and Elvira were both tied at 19 under on the 15th and a playoff beckoned, but Elvira hit the water with his first shot on the penultimate hole, leading to a double bogey. Rahm narrowly escaped the water on the 17th and made it into the clubhouse in a strong position with a birdie on the final hole, embracing his grandmother after completing the round. That left Elvira or Dunne needing an albatross on the 18th to force a tie but that was too tall an order with Dunne getting a birdie to pip the Spaniard to second place. “It’s been amazing,” added Rahm. “It’s truly been the hardest Sunday I’ve ever had in any tournament that I’ve won because the crowd wanted it so much and I wanted it so much.”

Players Punished

Five Spain players have been suspended by Rugby Europe after they angrily confronted referee Vlad Iordachescu following their controversial Rugby World Cup qualifier defeat against Belgium. Spain were one win away from qualifying as 'Europe 1' for next year's Rugby World Cup, ahead of Romania, going into their final game of the Rugby Europe competition against Belgium. The fixture was controversially officiated by Iordachescu, a Romanian, with Spain's players protesting against the number of penalties given against them at the end of the match after losing 18-10 to Belgium. World Rugby has not ordered a replay of the fixture, and Spain as things stand are due to face Portugal for the right to face Samoa over a two-legged play-off starting on June 9 to qualify as the fifth side in Pool A at next year's Rugby World Cup, alongside Ireland, Scotland, hosts Japan and also Romania.

The San Javier Squalos ran out easy winners in their local derby clash with ITV Orihuela Vega Baja last Saturday lunchtime. The Squalos, with home advantage, rolled over the visitors by 67 points to 21, in what is the penultimate FERRMUR Top Five league match of the season for both sides. The Squalos are third in the table, with 20 points, five points behind second-placed Cartagena University, and some 13 points behind title winners XV Rugby Murcia. ITV Orihuela are fourth, with 10 points to their name, with Rugby Lorca propping up the bottom with two points. The final fixtures see ITV Orihuela entertain Lorca this Saturday (6.00 pm kick-off), and the Squalos are at home to Cartagena University on Sunday (noon, kick-off).

Mistral Success

SAMM (Sailing Association Mar Menor) are staging race days every Sunday during this month and May as part of their Spring Series, with the Balaton boat Mistral (pictured) victorious last weekend. Last Sunday’s third race day of the series saw perfect weather for the first race, with a close start seeing the eight battling hard around the first lap with Shoestring Dos just ahead, but on the second lap, Ginetta missed a mark and retired whilst the other boats continued to fight hard with the tactics on the up-wind leg being the key to success. After five laps, only 10 minutes separated all the finishers except Rosita who retired after the fourth lap, with Mistral being the winner. The second race started in near calm conditions but, the wind backed as forecast to WSW and increased to 12 to 14 knots. Challenging conditions brought a very tight race, with the leading four boats Shoestrings Uno, Dos, and Tres, plus the Hartley 12.2, completing laps within seconds of each other, though Mistral was again victorious on handicap, with Dos coming second.

Preferente Group Four

Poor Monte Lose

CD COX 2 CD MONTESINOS 1 CD Thader’s hopes of getting into the Preferente Group Four play-offs seem to be receding week by week, after just a relatively short time ago they had manouvered themselves into third place. Two defeats by teams above them, followed by a shock home defeat by UD Ilicitana left the Rojales-based side needing a home victory last Sunday against struggling Benferri, but this local derby ended up nil-nil (captain Lloyd Dummett pictured-right above at the start). There were not many clear-cut chances for either side, with Rubén Sanz having the best Thader opportunity before the interval, whilst Benferri’s Javi Meseguer was sent off later on for a second caution, in a match where the referee waved the yellow card around at every needless opportunity. All is not lost yet for Thader, as they are seven points behind third-placed Villajoyosa who they entertain next month. Meanwhile, they go to seventh-placed Callosa this Sunday for a 6.00 pm kick-off.

There was no surprise at the Vicente Garcia stadium when CD Torrevieja lost to Preferente leaders Jove Espanol, two-nil (pictured above). The novelty was that the Torry side actually had 11 starting players and the luxury of four substitutes, but the team barely troubled the Jove keeper who was left concentrate on things like the play-offs. The goals came from Cobo (13 mins) and Adria (74 mins), and there is now a break for 11th-placed Torry this weekend, with their next scheduled opponents Calpe kicked out of the league. That means the next match is at home on Sunday April 29th against another play-off favourite side, Hercules B.

Such is the improvement in CD Almoradi (pictured before kick-off) these days that the fact that they could only manage a goaless draw at bottom side Monfiorte came as a surprise, as good fortune did favour the Vega Baja side. Almoradi are 13th in the table, and entertain the team just below them, Pinoso, this Sunday, with an 11.30 kick-off. The big match this weekend sees second-placed Hercules play leaders Jove Espanol this Saturday.

Montesinos slipped to fourth place in Regional Primera Group Eight after looking second-best against their relegation-threatened opponents last Saturday. Though Manu and German were missing for the visitors, Monte should have had more in the tank for this match (Monte pictured in their away blue kit), but they were not helped by top scorer Vaz carrying an injury and getting another

one in the game, which slowed his pace. Cox were the better side, whilst Monte looked lethargic, but substitute Luis did put them ahead five minutes in the second half. That was a false dawn for the visitors, as Cox deservedly got two late goals to secure them a much-needed win. This latest defeat means CD Montesinos drop down one place into fourth position as they are overtaken

by Santa Pola. Despite the defeat, this has still been a historic season for Monte who will need to be at their best for the final three matches this season if they are to claim that third place. Three matches remain in the campaign for Monte to overhaul new third-placed side Santa Pola, starting with Sunday’s home match against 12th-placed Callosa Deportiva, with a 6.00 pm kick-off.

Play-Off Orihuela

Orihuela have booked a place in the Valencia Regional Third division playoffs, with two wins in five days, capped by Wednesday night’s home two-nil home victory over Roda (goals in each half from Benja and Brian). The added bonus was that they went top of the table, after Castellón were surprisingly held to a oneone home draw by lowly

Borriol. Orihuela negotiated a tricky trip to Villarreal last Saturday with a three-one victory, and are now 12 points clear of fifth-placed Eldense, with four matches left, and the first of those is this weekend away to Rayo Ibense. Mid-table Crevillente beat Alzira one-nil on Sunday, but then lost one-nil at Elche Ilicitano, who had just

appointed Fidel Martínez as the new coach as the club is fighting a relegation battle, after a poor one-nil defeat at relegation rivals Almazora. Wednesday’s win gave Elche a welcome three-point cushion above the drop zone, with a trip to Villarreal to come tomorrow (Saturday). Meanwhile, Crevillente will be at home to strugglers Buñol.

CELTA VIGO 2 BARCELONA 2 Ten-man Barcelona held on for an entertaining draw with Celta Vigo in La Liga on Tuesday evening, keeping their unbeaten league run intact. Ernesto Valverde named a much-changed side with an eye on tomorrow’s Copa del Rey final against Sevilla (9.30 pm kickoff), and it was Ousmane Dembele (36) who opened the scoring for the visitors before Jonny (45) deservedly equalised for Celta Vigo on the stroke of half-time. Barcelona reclaimed the lead in the 64th minute after Paulinho tapped home from close range, but they were reduced to ten men seven minutes later as Sergi Roberto - who had come on as a substitute 11 minutes earlier - pulled down Iago Aspas. And it was the former Liverpool striker who got Celta Vigo level once again, scoring with eight minutes of normal time to play, but the hosts could not find another as Barcelona extended their unbeaten La Liga run to 40 matches and took another step closer to the league title.

Record Breakers

Cristiano Ronaldo's 42nd goal of the season prevented Real Madrid from suffering a second successive defeat at the Bernabeu on Wednesday. Iñaki Williams (pictured below) had put Athletic Bilbao ahead with a fine clipped finish. But Ronaldo, who had earlier hit the crossbar with a header, diverted Luka Modric's shot in with his heel to score his 26th goal in 16 games. Madrid stay third in La Liga, 15 points behind leaders Barcelona and three points adrift of Atletico in second. Despite dominating for long periods, it had looked like being a frustrating evening for Zinedine Zidane's team. The hosts, who had 29 shots on goal, appeared as though they were going to be punished for their profligate finishing, until the Portuguese forward came to their rescue again three minutes from time. Real’s La Liga match is a week on Saturday away to Leganes, but they go away to Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final tie this coming Wednesday.

Elche deserved a lot more than a draw in this clash with the league leaders, who frankly did not look that impressive last Sunday lunchtime at the Martinez Valero stadium. The Ilicitanos were also deprived of what seemed to be a perfectly good appeal for a penalty, when Josan was fouled (pictured above), and the anger of Elche coach Pacheta (pictured below departing) was such, that he was sent off by referee Ricardo Escudero Marín, who had a poor match in charge. Mallorca coach Vicente Moreno poured fuel on the fire that Josan should have been given his marching orders for feigning the foul, but the visitors still saw two of their players sent off for double-yellow cards, which Elche could not capitlise on. Coach Pacheta said that Elche were the better side, and they had certainly done enough to secure the three points. Two other taiking points from the match was the appearance of Nino as subsitute, which meant that he wore an Elche shirt for the 362nd time, which was a club record. Secondly, defender Edu Albacar is almost certainly out for the rest of the regular Elche campaign as he went off on Sunday with a torn thigh muscle. The Ilicitanos are getting tantalisingly closer to booking a play-off spot, as they stay third in the Segunda Division B table, with 57 points to their name, and a trip to Valencia 2nds this Sunday lunchtime. Crucially, the Ilicitanos then entertain the team that are fifth in the table and seven points behind Elche in the play-off battle, namely Lleida Esportiu.

Isco Magic

Swap Deal?

BARCELONA 2 VALENCIA 1 Barcelona broke La Liga's all-time unbeaten record with a win over Valencia at the Nou Camp last Saturday. La Liga leaders Barca, who went 39 games without defeat in the league (and stretched it further on Tuesday, see above), broke Real Sociedad's 38-year record thanks to a goal in either half from Luis Suarez and Samuel Umtiti. Valencia were allowed back into the game late on as substitute Ousmane Dembele fouled Gaya in the box. Parejo stepped up, Ter Stegen guessed the right way, but it squirmed under his body.

MALAGA 1 REAL MADRID 2 Real Madrid moved up into third in La Liga by beating bottom side Malaga. Real rested several regulars, including Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale, after last weej’s dramatic 4-3 Champions League aggregate win over Juventus. Isco scored an excellent curling free-kick to give them the lead at his old club - and then assisted Casemiro (pictured below) for a tap-in. Diego Rolan scored a consolation for Malaga with the last kick after Jesus Vallejo's error. Real - who moved above Valencia in the table – went to four points behind second-placed Atletico Madrid, who beat Levante 3-0 earlier on Sunday.

Real Madrid have allegedly have offered Karim Benzema (pictured) in a swap deal for Liverpool talisman Mohamed Salah. The Egypt international has been tipped to quit Anfield at the end of the season, despite only joining the Reds from Roma last summer. Real Madrid are said to be tracking Salah, 25, with Real President, Florentino Perez desperate to sign him. According to the Don Balon website, Real are keen to include Benzema in a player-plus-cash deal for Salah. They say Perez wants to offload the France international and the striker would reduce Liverpool’s asking price for their star man. However, Don Balon add that Jurgen Klopp isn’t keen on the swap deal, despite Perez being persistent with his offer.

Trophies Back

Wimbledon winner Arantxa Sánchez Vicario has managed to get her trophies back from her ex-husband, Josep Santacana, from whom she is undergoing a messy divorce. According to the report in the El Pais newspaper, a van collected the retired tennis star's medals, cups and even her wedding dress from a warehouse belonging to the Santacana family in Fontrubí in the Barcelona area last week, along with other valuables and personal effects such as works of art and cutlery. Josep Santacana reportedly signed a document in front of a notary agreeing to allow Arantxa to recover the possessions which were of most sentimental value to her, and which would include her Wimbledon trophy. These goods were taken to a property owned by Arantxa's brother, Javier Sánchez Vicario. Arantxa's relationship with Josep Santacana never ran smoothly from the start – her family fell out with her over her choice of partner, saying they did not trust him, and even resorting to hiring private detectives to trail him. The detectives found out Santacana had massive debts and no assets to his name at all – information Arantxa's family confronted her with. In response, the tennis star settled Santacana's debts herself and allowed him to manage her own finances, which included, at the time, around 17 million US dollars in prize money earnt throughout her career. In February this year, it was revealed that Arantxa's husband had filed for divorce, taken all her remaining assets and applied for custody of their two children, claiming she is an 'unfit mother'. Josep Santacana says the ex-sportswoman is 'not mentally fit' to care for Arantxa, nine, and Leo, seven. As a result of her husband's having taken all her remaining wealth from her, the one-time multi-millionaire now lives on the very healthy but much-diminished sum of three thousand euro a month from her job as sports director at the Metropolitan School of Miami and from freelance work with various Latin American TV channels as sports commentator. Arantxa Sánchez Vicario, along with the Czech Republic's Jana Novotná, won the women's doubles at Wimbledon in 1995, beating the international duo comprising Belarus' Natasha Zvereva and the USA's Gigi Fernández.

Walking OIdies

The Gran Alacant Oldies Walking Football club is going from strength to strength, and a recent weekly session produced an equal-best attendance of 16 players. The frustration for the club is that they only have a concrete pitch to play on locally, which means that they’ve had to decline offers from teams from the UK and Holland to play them. The good news is that they are trying to sort out their first match against a team out of Gran Alacant, and that hopefully will be away to a side from Algorfa, who in contrast have perfect astro turf surface to play on. If you are interested in joining the club and to learn more, get in touch with organiser Barry Lane via email, laneinspain@hotmail.com.

Kuhn Setback

Nicola Kuhn's relentless march towards tennis stardom has been halted for at least six weeks by a freak on-court injury, writes DONNA GEE. Spain's top teenage talent has been forced to pull out of ATP World Tour tournaments in Barcelona and Madrid after breaking a bone in his right foot in a freak on-court accident during the Barletta Challenger event in Italy, as reported in last week’s Courier. In-form Kuhn was coasting towards a place in the last 16 at Barletta, Italy when he twisted his foot in a baseline rut as he chased a service return from Portuguese opponent Goncalo Oliveira. And although the blond-haired Torrevieja star bravely attempted to continue following a lengthy spell of courtside treatment, Nico - who was leading 6-4 2-0 at the time - had no choice but to retire. Although he hopes to have the knee-to toe strapping removed next week and begin light training, the injury could not have come at a worse time. 18-yearold Kuhn's scintillating form suggested he might well have won the Barletta title and with it, rocketed 30 or 40 places up the ATP rankings. Instead, he had the scant consolation of achieving a highest-ever world singles ranking of 194. Ironically, the injury came as Nico approached the biggest challenge of his career to date. He had been given wild-card entries to the main draw in the upcoming Barcelona and Mutua Madrid Opens - and had genuine hopes of a big breakthrough at the French Open in Paris in May. He will now miss all three tournaments - and is turning his thoughts towards the grass of Wimbledon in July. "The problem is that I'm going to drop down the rankings while I am sidelined, which will make it more difficult for me to meet the entry requirements,'' he told me this week. "I have around 150 ranking points to defend over the next few months and instead of moving up towards the top 100, as I had hoped, I could now find myself down around No.250 through non-activity. But that is something I am sure I can deal with as and when it happens.''

Marc Fancied

After the controversy of the Argentine Moto GP, the tour heads off to the United States for this Sunday’s race at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, with Spain’s world champion, Marc Marquez, going in as a hot favourite. The Texan track is one of the Spaniard's kingdoms, a track at which he's won all five editions of the GP of the Americas held so far, so it appears that 25 points are as good as in the bag for Marquez. In Texas, Marquez certainly flies, but the Honda is also very comfortable, securing three of the top four spots last season. Brit Cal Crutchlow leads the standings after his Argentine win, with Andrea Dovizioso just three points behind, with Johan Zarco third, followed by Spain’s Maverick Vinales in fourth spot, followed by Marquez who is 18 points behind Crutchlow.

ALONSO BANNED

Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso has been given a three-match ban for violent conduct after a tackle on Shane Long in Saturday's 3-2 win at Southampton. He will miss Sunday's FA Cup semi-final against the same opponents at Wembley, plus Premier League matches at Burnley on Thursday and Swansea on 28 April.

SCREEN REPLAY

Replays of incidents reviewed by video assistant referees (VAR) will be shown on big screens at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. VAR will be used at a World Cup for the first time despite criticism of its use in domestic competitions. So far, fans have been unable to see replays that referees use to make their decision, leading to confusion, but the World Cup will see spectators be told when a decision is being reviewed and why a decision has been reached. But the replays will not be shown inside the ground while the referee is making a decision, to avoid the crowd influencing him.

WEMBLEY’S DOUBLE TREAT

It’s FA Cup semi-final weekend with Chelsea, Manchester United, Southampton and Tottenham just one game away from reaching the final. The four clubs boast 28 FA Cup titles between them, with tomorrow’s match – between Manchester United and Spurs (kick-off 6.15 pm, live on BBC 1) – representing 20 of those triumphs. But eight-times winners Spurs have not reached the final, let alone won it, since 1991, while Southampton only success in the competition came back in 1976, when they had their shock win over Manchester United. The Red Devils have been in the better run of form over the past week but Spurs should have the slender advantage in the game, having played their home matches at Wembley this season. United after a broadside from boss Jose Mourinho, recovered from their West Brom defeat to play much better in their midweek win over Bournemouth, but Spurs have

Premier League form to refer to as the last meeting between the sides was at Wembley in January, where they claimed a comfortable 2-0 win. Chelsea take on Southampton on Sunday (kick-off 4.00 pm, live on BT Sport 1), with Chelsea hoping to end the season with some silverware after a disappointing campaign saw them lose their Premier League crown. The former champions are languishing in 5th place behind Tottenham in the Premier League and have been knocked out of the Champions League leaving the FA Cup their only hope of a trophy. If Chelsea have had a poor season then Southampton’s season has been disastrous. Having sacked their manager and brought in Mark Hughes, the club currently sit in the relegation zone just three points off Swansea, the club above them. They’ll be hoping that an FA Cup final spot will give the team the lift in confidence they need to get out of the relegation zone.

PRESSURE-FREE FARAH

Four-time Olympic champion Sir Mo Farah says he is enjoying not having the "pressure" of being the favourite for this Sunday's London Marathon (live on BBC 1). Farah, 35, retired from the track last year in order to switch his focus to road running. He has not won a race over the marathon distance but is targeting a top-three finish in London. "It's going to be different, but every race I go into I aim to fight for a podium place," he said. "My aim is to stick to my own plan. The team at the London Marathon have put together an amazing field with guys like Eliud Kipchoge and Daniel Wanjiru." Kenyan Wanjiru won the 2017 London Marathon while compatriot Kipchoge is a two-time winner of the event, as well as taking marathon gold at the Rio 2016 Olympics. Farah last ran the London Marathon in 2014, when he fin-

ished eighth. "I've definitely prepared differently this year compared to 2014. When I ran the marathon in 2014 I had to think about saving energy for the track but this year I've gone hard at it," he said. "It's a great feeling not to have the same pressure as I do on the track. I'm just going to stick to my plan. If the guys set off at world-record pace, I'll go with them - why not?" Farah said he watched the 2018 Commonwealth Games on Australia's Gold Coast - at which he could have added to his medal collection in the 5,000m and 10,000m - but is standing by his decision to retire from the track. "I watched and I wondered whether I could have done that double," he said. "Maybe. But as an athlete you have to set yourself new challenges. You have to enjoy what you do."
