Ramirez Resigns

arlos Ramírez (file photo) resigned as San Fulgencio mayor at a special plenary session of the council, after being sentenced to eight and a half years of disqualification from public office for prevarication last autumn. Wednesday’s meeting had been called by opposition councillors after Ramírez had not given a statement on November’s court ruling, which he was legally obliged to do so. Susana Ortuño has assumed the role of acting mayor until a new plenary session is convened to choose Ramírez’s permanent successor. Ortuño is one of five ex-Partido Popular councillors that were dismissed from the party in November, and along with one UPYD representative, they continued to prop up Ramírez in office.

The plenary meeting lasted less than three minutes on Wednesday morning, with the now ex-mayor refusing to allow opposition councillors to speak, as he read a prepared statement. Ramírez criticised the sentence handed down by the Orihuela court in November, and said that he was going through an appeal process, and “that if they clear me, I will have been proved to have been innocent”. The court found him liable for prevarication concerning the case of a total of 195 thousand euros being given as 48 grants into a football club that he was actively involved in. Anti-corruption prosecutor, Pablo Romero, has already opened an investigation to find out the reasons why the mayor was still in office, despite being sen-

was it, but one of them decided to follow the couple’s car, and noticed the drunk hitting the woman who was driving the vehicle. The agents stopped the car and helped save the female from further violence, before arresting the man and reading him his rights. He was carted off to the Guardia Civil in Almoradi, ahead of an appearance before a local judge. No further details have been made over the assault and where in Algorfa took place.

per has reported suggestions that the only current sitting PP representative, Manuel Gómez (who refused to join the rebels in November) may be backed by the opposition parties as the mayoral candidate. A plenary meeting to elect Ramirez’s successor is expected in the next week.

Cops Stop Brit Assualt A drunken British man was arrested in Algorfa on Saturday night, after trying to assault his wife whilst she was driving their car, just minutes after he was thrown out of a bar by the local police. The unnamed man was detained just minutes after Algorfa local police were called at around 11.00 pm by the bar manager wanting the customer removed because of his unruly behaviour. Once two police patrol teams dealt with the bar incident, they thought that

Orihuela council’s government team have formally published the tender specifications for a new beach bar contract, after the facilities were closed down at the beginning of last month. The bars were shut amidst a row and confusion over contractual dates between the Partido Popular and Ciudadanos coalition partners on Orihuela council, and the beaches and contracting departments especially. In a piece of symbolism, contracts councillor Paco Sáez (Partido Popular) appeared alongside beaches and coastal councillor, Luisa Boné (Ciudadanos), just days after they were blaming each other over what happened. The four-year franchise, renewable for a further two years, is worth over half a million euros per annum, and interested parties have until mid-May to apply for

Torrevieja's government team has confirmed the switch of the site of the weekly Wednesday market in La Mata, despite opposition to the plans from some traders and residents. The market will move to Avenida de Francia at a yet to be announced date after the current site was ruled to be unsafe due to concerns over subsidence. Formal notification to the stall holders still has to take place, and Torrevieja council will

the contract. Three council officials are to supervise the process, but Luisa Boné was last week unable to give a date when the bars would reopen. The Informacion newspaper reports that the “Q” quality threshold is not present in the tender documents, and that the new tender features a requirement for each bar to have a defibrillator at it, with staff

also have to erect signs and paint markings before the switch becomes effective.

Tower Staffing A jointly-owned SpanishBritish company, Ferronats, has been awarded the air traffic control contract for the new Murcia international airport at Corvera. Ferronats, owned by Ferrovial and British operator NATS, already runs the control tower at several Spanish airports, including Alicante-Elche. Eight controllers would be

used by them at Corvera on an eight-year contract worth a million euros per annum. Corvera operator AENA says that it plans to switch flights from San Javier to Corvera at the start of next year, and low-cost carrier Jet2 are already promoting services to Corvera from Leeds and Manchester airports from the end of March next year.

Safety Concerns

A hundred people staged a protest last Saturday to call for safety improvements to the road that connects between San Miguel de Salinas, the Las Filipinas urbanisation, and the Orihuela Costa. The demonstration(picture from the Informacion newspaper) at the urbanisation was organised by the Neighborhood Association of San Miguel Arcángel and the Association of Friends of Sierra Escalona.

Besides calls to widen the road and to eliminate some of the bends on it , the protest was also about the clearing of forest land and felling of trees in Los Claveles, Las Majadas, and La rambla de la Fayona. As previously reported in The Courier, San Miguel council suspended the erection of fencing along part of the road, after complaints concerning visibiility were made to the authority by the San Miguel Arcángel group.

Poolside Swarm A swarm of bees had to be dealt with by firefighters at the La Marina Campsite on Monday afternoon, following recent similar incidents in Almoradi and Los Montesinos. The crew from the Baix Vinalopó Regional Park station were called in, and cordoned off an area of 20 square metres, after the swarm had gathered in some shrubs next to a swimming pool. Some 500 people had to be evacuated from the pool area, which was especially busy because of the bank

holiday weekend. A special box was installed to capture the queen bee and hive members, with a beekeeper brought in to take charge of the process.

San Pedro Death A 58-year-old San Pedro del Pinatar man died after being struck in the head after a fight last Friday night. The incident in the municipality is being investigated by the Guardia Civil, who arrived on the scene along with the San Pedro local police, and discovered the Spanish national lying on

the ground. Witnesses said they saw an argument between two people shortly after 9.30 pm , with the victim later dying at the Hospital Universitario Virgen de la Arrixaca de Murcia. At the time of going to press, the Guardia were still trying to locate the assailant.

Smoother Surface Pedestrians will no longer have to trip over broken cobblestones or motorists worry over tyre punctures and other problems in Torrevieja's Plaza de Oriente area, as resurfacing work started this week. The long-delayed project saw workers appearing unexpectedly in the area on Monday, with an asphalt surface being installed to replace the stones in and around the Plaza. The lack of notification from Torrevieja council caught people who park around the Plaza on the hop, not helped by a large influx of visitors across the

bank holiday period. The problems around the area have caused Semana Santa processions to use different

routes on the last two occasions, despite earlier promises from the authority that the work was in hand.

Rojales Logjam Opposition politicians are to ask why redevelopment work at the Poeta Miguela Hernández school in Rojales has ground to a halt for the last four months. Partido Popular education spokesperson in the Valencian Parliament, Beatriz Gascó Enriquez, visited the school last week to meet with representatives of the parent-teacher group AMPA. New classrooms were completed in time for the start of the school year in 2017, but nothing has happened so far in regard to work beginning on the sports hall and sports courts. Gascó said she would raise the matter in Valencia

and ask the Education Minister, Vicent Marza, what is going on, and when the building work will be finished. The previouslynamed Prince of Spain

Loyalty Fraud A 37-year-old Cartagena man has been arrested in San Javier for a series of scams where he defrauded a petrol station chain of around fifteen-hundred euro through a dozen crimes by claiming illegally via a series of loyalty cards. The Guardia Civil discovered that the alleged scammer got hold of the loyalty card details for several customers of the company, and then he linked them to a mobile phone app to help get discounts at various establishments.

Guardia officers nabbed the Spaniard when he was filling up at a petrol station in

the San Javier municipality, belonging to the company that he had defrauded.

Decent Figures

Average waiting times for surgery at Torrevieja Hospital and Vinalopó Hospial in Elche are well below the average figures for hospitals across the Valencia region. Figures produced by Ministry of Health show that the overall average wait for the two hospitals stands at 42 days, some 57 days less than the rest of the region’s public hospitals. Statistics for Torrevieja and Vinalopó show that general surgery numbers come in at 12 days, while urology patients expect an average school was the subject of a wait of 47 days long-running campaign to see major improvements, after the old building led to fears about the safety risks posed to pupils and staff. The recorded bells of the church in La Mata square could be silenced by Torrevieja council if the priest does nothing to reduce the volume level. The Our Lady of the Rosary church offers piped chimes coming out of a loudspeaker every hour, but has been the subject of complaints from residents since 2005, and now after a visit from council inspectors to measure the noise levels at a nearby house, an ultimatum has been issued. The council has ordered the parish priest to install a volume limiter, and if he does not comply, then the taped bells will be

Balcony Tragedy

A young British holidaymaker died after falling from a Costa Blanca balcony after popping out for a cigarette, an inquest heard, which recorded an open verdict over her death. Danielle Hall was in Benidorm with her boyfriend Jordan Bevan and his grandmother when the tragedy occurred in November 2016. They were staying at the Bermudas apartment hotel, and Danielle, 21, from Northumbria, had been on a night out at the resort with

Jordan that evening. On her return, she fell over the balcony railing of her apartment and was found on the roof of a garage several floors below, Danielle, who worked as a catering assistant at a Tesco store, suffered fatal injuries. At an inquest in North Shields, it was said that a number of reports, including post mortem and toxicology documents, had been requested from Spanish authorities to help establish what happened. Northumbria Police also

carried out enquiries and Jordan told officers that Danielle had not shown any signs of depression or suicidal tendencies on the night she died. He said that after they returned to their apartment, she went outside to the balcony and he assumed she was going for a cigarette. He then heard a bang or a thud and found Danielle lying on the floor. Coroner Eric Armstrong said there was no evidence to suggest she had taken her own life, and he recorded an open verdict.

Poor Parenting A British couple have been charged with child abandonment after repeatedly leaving their children alone at a Mallorca hotel to go out drinking. The Scottish couple were arrested after hotel staff alerted police to their drunken antics last month, which were widely reported in the British media, and covered in the last edition of The Courier. The pair had left their 11 and four-year-old alone at the Palma Bay Hotel and were drunk for most of their trip. The couple ignored the hotel staff’s warning that it

was against the law to leave them alone. They claimed another British couple at the hotel had agreed to watch them. Other families reported looking after the girls for hours on end after finding them alone in the hotel, day

and night. Police arrived at the hotel to find the parents as well as a last-minute babysitter, drunk. The mother and stepfather were arrested, while their children were taken into protective custody.

Controversial Verdict

Tens of thousands of people have marched across Spain to protest against the acquittal of five men accused of gang raping an 18-year-old woman at Pamplona’s bull-running festival. The protests erupted after a court last week found the men guilty of the lesser offense of sexual abuse, rather than convicting them of rape. The five men were sentenced to nine years. The victim is appealing, along with prosecutors. The case, which has shocked the country, became known as “La Manada”, or “The Wolf Pack”, after a WhatsApp messaging group in which the men and their friends spoke to each other. Local police estimated between 32,000 and 35,000 people joined the march in Pamplona (pictured) on Saturday, the third consecutive day of protests. Many carried placards with the slogan “it’s not sexual abuse, it’s rape”. Crowds of mainly women have filled the streets in other cities, including Alicante, Orihuela (pictured below), Torrevieja and Valencia, while many also took to social media to share

their experiences of abuse using the hashtag #cuentalo, which means “tell it” in Spanish. More than 1.2 million people have signed an online petition calling for the disqualification of the judges who passed the sentence. Prosecutors had sought 22 years for each defendant on the more serious charge. The protests prompted the government to announce that it will consider reforming the country’s rape laws. The five men, aged 27 to 29, were accused of raping the woman at the entrance to an apartment during Pamplona’s famous San Fermin bull-running festival in July 2016. The men, from Sevilla, filmed the attack with their phones and then laughed about it with their friends on their WhatsApp group. Under Spain's criminal code, evidence of violence or intimidation must exist for the offence of rape to be proved. The judges said in the ruling: “"It is indisputable that the plaintiff suddenly found herself in a narrow and hidden place, surrounded by five older, thick-bodied males who left her overwhelmed and unrespon-

sive." "The videos show the plaintiff surrounded and stuck against the wall by two of the accused... she has an absent grimace, and keeps her eyes closed.” Ana Botin, the head of Spanish bank Santander, said on Twitter that the ruling was "a step back for women's security". Adriana Lastra, a main figure in the main opposition PSOE Socialist party, said the court ruling was "disgraceful". "It's the product of a patriarchal and macho culture”, she commented. An order of Carmelite nuns in the Hondarribia monastery in the Basque country also condemned the court judgement on Facebook. "We live cloistered away, wearing a habit that reaches down to our ankles, we don't go out in the evening, we don't go to parties, we don't drink alcohol and we've undertaken a vow of chastity," the nuns said. "And because that's our free choice, we will defend with all the means at our disposal... the right of all woman to FREELY do the opposite, without them being judged, raped, threatened, killed or humiliated," they wrote.

Pensions Climbdown

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy last week agreed to increase State pensions in line with inflation this year and next as a concession to the Basque National Party (PNV), whose vote will be crucial in the minority Partido Popular (PP) government trying to get the national budget through Congress. Economy minister Román Escolano is said to be planning extra levies on technology firms – known as a 'Google Tax' - to help fund the rises.. Escolano says the tax will come into effect in 2019, but the treasury has already started working on the exact terms. For the last six years, pensions have only risen by the legal minimum of 0.25% every January, sparking mass protests across the country. Now, however, they will increase for 2018 by 1.6%, the average inflation figure, and go up again in 2019 by, probably, a similar amount, depending upon changes in the consumer prices index. Widows' and widowers' pensions will also go up, to

56% of the deceased spouse's income, instead of the government's initially proposed 54%, but will rise to 60% in 2019. Minimum and non-contributory retirement pensions were already due to rise by 3% and will still do so. This 3% increase was the government's response to the street protests, but demonstrators said it was not enough as it would still have left over five million State pensioners struggling to make ends meet as their own middle-income monthly payments would not qualify as 'minimum' and be subject to a rise. The pensions reform, approved in 2013, which links pension calculation to national life expectancy, was due to come into force in 2019 – the year of the next European Parliamentary elections – but will not now apply until at least 2023. Experts estimate that this reform based upon life expectancy would devalue pensions by an average of 5% over 10 years. The PNV, in exchange for Rajoy's compromising over pensions, has agreed to

vote against amendments put forward by opposition parties which could prevent the budget from being signed off, but it is still not guaranteed that the Basque party will vote in favour of the budget as a whole. Its leader Aitor Esteban says it wants the government to backtrack on applying Article 155 of the Constitution to Catalunya, which strips a region of its autonomous governing powers. Article 155 was applied in October in response to Catalunya's regional government calling a 'banned' independence referendum. Applying Article 155 to Catalunya is a particularly thorny issue for the Basque Country, which has long had its own independence supporters – albeit never called a referendum – since, even though those who want the Basque Country to secede from Spain are now very much in a minority, this could change in future years. Mariano Rajoy has always blamed the pension pot deficit for being 'unable' to increase retirees' income by more than 0.25% a year, but now that he has agreed to up it by 1.6%, he says there will be no need to cut down on spending in social programmes such as welfare, education and healthcare in order to fund the higher pensions. Trade unions, who are supporting the pensioners' protests, say the government needs to go even further and increase payments in line with inflation retroactively. They have also signed a petition calling for decent pensions to be enshrined in the constitution and for a minimum 'wage' for retirees of at least €1,000 per month.

Examiner Threat

Driving examiners have threatened to resume strike action, unless they get the pay rise of 250 euro per month that they have requested from the national government. Industrial action last year saw examiners downing tools three days a week between June and December inclusive, leading to literally hundreds of thousands of driving tests being cancelled or shelved and driving schools forced out of business, as pupils decided there was little point in carrying on with their lessons if

they had no idea when they might have a chance at getting their licences. The average first-time fail rate in Spain is around 73%, meaning demand for tests is high as the nearly threequarters of candidates who do not pass their initial driving test are keen to book another as soon as possible. Examiners have been asking for the extra 250 euro for the last decade, since they consider it unfair that they are paid the same as office-based staff when they face additional risks, and

with long-running staff shortages due to cutbacks, often have to double up their shifts. But now the draft annual national budget has been published, the pay rise has not been included, much to the chagrin of Ángela Arias, spokeswoman for the Association of Traffic Examiners (ASEXTRA). If an amendment to the budget does not subsequently go through – which ASEXTRA members expect to hear about by mid-May – they will resume strike action, Sra Arias says.

Dads Get More

Paternity leave spending has exceeded maternity payments this year for the first time ever, according to Spain's Social Security office. In the first three months of 2018, the department handled 62,832 maternity leave applications, a fall of 8.1% on the same period in 2017. By comparison, paternity pay applications grew to 64,505 between January and March inclusive, repre-

senting a 4.8% fall year on year. The ministry of employment, which the National Social Security Institute (INSS) forms part of, says these figures show a 'clear cultural change' in childcare. But the actual amounts paid out continue to be higher for mums, given that they have four months off work compared with dads' four weeks. Maternity pay in the first

quarter of 2018 totalled €363.6 million, whilst paternity pay came to €101.9m. This said, the increase in payments for maternity leave was just 0.9% year on year, whilst paternity pay rose by 28%. Part of this is likely to be because in the first quarter of 2017, dads only had two weeks' leave to care for newborns or newly-adopted children – a period which doubled on January 1, 2018.

Chicago Mama It’s less than a month to go before Studio 32’s latest musical theatre venture at San Fulgencio’s Cardenal Belluga theatre, namely “Chicago”, the raunchy musical set in the 1920s. The character of Mama is a big challenge for any actress. She’s a hard, corrupt individual – the “mother hen” who, for a price, is always willing to do “her chickies” a favour. Francoist Scrappings

Workmen in Madrid started to remove street signs bearing names connected to the rule of dictator General Francisco Franco last Friday, despite opposition from some elements in the country who believe his legacy should be preserved. Madrid’s city council said some 49 streets would be renamed, but the process has been fraught with legal disputes in a show of how Spain still struggles to come to terms with its dictatorship past. A similar process has already been undertaken by many municipalities across Alicante Province and the Murcia region. Many of the names refer to generals who took part in the military uprising against

the Spanish republic in 1936 and the Civil War that followed. Streets will revert to their pre-Franco era names or, if this is not possible, in honour of illustrious women, education institutions or politicians, the council said. Historians estimate as many as 500,000 combatants and civilians were killed on the Republican and Nationalist sides in the war. After it ended, tens of thousands of Franco’s enemies were killed or imprisoned in a campaign to wipe out dissent. With its drive to rename streets, the Madrid authorities invoked the 2007 Historical Memory Law, brought in under the previous PSOE Socialist government, which made provision

for the removal of statues and the changing of place names connected to the Franco regime. The plan was approved in 2015 but was appealed against in the courts by the Francisco Franco Foundation - which campaigns to keep the memory of the dictator alive. This appeal was later overturned by a Madrid court. In area of Madrid last Friday, neon-clad workmen climbed ladders to takedown place names honouring General Romero Basart, a general who fought on the side of Franco during the Civil War, replacing them with a new name in honour of the 20th century Spanish physicist Blas Cabrera.

Benidorm Pulled Comedy show Benidorm went out for the last time on Wednesday night, with resort-based comedy being axed by ITV after 11 years, though a number of cast members are getting involved in a stage version which hits boards in the UK this autumn. Show creator, Derren Litten, took to Twitter at the weekend to confirm that ITV had pulled the programme. Derren wrote: "I created the series over 11 years ago, wrote it, guest starred in it and ended up directing it. It's difficult to think what else there is to do! Thank you for watching! #MuchasGracias" Fans of the show were devastated by the news and took to social media. One said: "Thank you for giving us 10 cracking seasons! One of the best programs on the telly box and it will go down in history. I do hope this isn't the end. That show is too good to end. But I know what ever you decide to do will be in the best interest of the show". Viewing figures and critics have taken a different stance, with a number of new characters in recent

years failing to grab the same of the originals, like the Garvey family. There’s also been the view that the stories and scripts lacked the humour and freshness of the early days, and in recent years simply have not been funny. The Courier’s TV writer, Alex Trelinski said:- “Sadly, Benidorm has been going through the motions for the last five years, and this final run(along with the last few series) has barely raised a laugh for me. Ironically, last week’s episode with “solicitor” Winter Smallcock and the return of Mr.Wu, showed touches of how funny Benidorm used to be, and was easily the best episode of this final series”.

Irish Ferry First

Brittany Ferries this week launched a new twiceweekly route from Cork into northern Spain making it the first ever ferry link between Ireland and Spain. The service will link Cork and Santander in northern Spain, making two returnsailings a week on a Wednesday and Friday. The MV Connemara has been specially chartered to serve the route.

The ship has a capacity for around 500 passengers with space for a total of 195 cars. Dining options will reflect the Spanish regions served, and there will also be a small shop and cafébar, as well as passenger lounges. Four-legged members of the family will also be accommodated thanks to a small allocation of petfriendly cabins on the ship.

It is a good question, and one worth finding the answer to, as your residential status when living abroad affects the way in which you pay tax and how much you pay. As a rule of thumb, as a Brit living in Spain you will be considered to be fiscal or tax resident if you remain in Spainfor 183 days or more in any tax year. (The tax year in Spain runs from 1st January to 31st December.) Getting your ‘residencia’ rubber-stamps this, as you are registered with both the tax office (Hacienda) and the police, effectively putting you on the radar. However, if you leave Spain and retain a home in the UK for at least 91 consecutive days, you may still be deemed to be tax resident in the UK if you are present in it on at least 30 days during the UK tax year. You do not have to own the property for this rule to count. If you carry out full-time work in the UK for at least 1 year you will also be deemed to be a UK tax resident. Income derived in the UK is taxable in the UK, so that would include rental income from a property in the UK. Also, some income is taxed at source in the UK, such as private pensions via PAYE. However, this does not mean that this is exempt from tax in Spain. From the above, you can see it is possible to be liable to pay tax in both the UK and Spain. However, to avoid this problem, the UK has negotiated double tax treaties (DTAs) with over 100 countries including Spain. Spanish residents can therefore receive tax relief on most types of income that has already been taxed in the UK. As the personal allowances in Spain are generally lower than the UK, there could be a difference or shortfall still to pay in Spain. Basically, if you are a Spanish tax resident, you will need to pay income tax on your worldwide income. However, a nonresident of Spain is only required to pay tax in Spain on any Spanish income. A good ‘asesoria’ or tax adviser should ensure the DTA is used to ensure you pay the correct amount of tax, and not pay tax twice.

Domicile is a legal term which is different from residence or nationality. A person’s domicile is the country which is their natural home, to which they would expect eventually to return if they went abroad. For many retired Brits living here, their country of domicile is particularly important when considering their liabilities under inheritance tax law. Most UK expats consider their domicile to be the country where they were born. In fact, it is usually the country where their father was born. Your domicile can be changed in exceptional circumstances to be the country that you have chosen to make your permanent home, but this involves severing significant ties with your home country and being a permanent resident abroad for at least 15 years. Changing your domicile is not an easy thing, and can prove to be particularly troublesome, especially for UK nationals, as a UK domicile means you could be liable for UK Inheritance tax on your worldwide assets. So that would include a Spanish property, for example. One of the most famous examples of someone falling foul of inheritance tax due to domicile status is that of Richard Burton. Although born in the UK, Burton had lived in the US for 27 years and died in Geneva, where he had taken residence for tax purposes. Upon his death, HMRC pursued a claim for inheritance tax. This may seem unreasonable, as he had not lived in the UK

And this is where Burton’s estate came unstuck. Although he had not lived in the UK for decades, did not have a property there and was buried in Switzerland, during his first marriage to Elizabeth Taylor, Burton had bought burial plots in his home town of Pontrhydyfen in Wales. As such, HMRC successfully argued that he was still domiciled in the UK as he had the intention of returning there, consequently reaping £2.4m in inheritance tax. Although you may not have the same wealth as Richard Burton, it is nonetheless important to understand the implications your residential status has on your inheritance tax liabilities both here in Spain and in your country of domicile, which for most of us is the UK. Are you thinking of getting a dog but afraid your cat won't like it, or vice- versa? While many cats and dogs don't get along right off the bat, there are ways to help them adjust to living with each other. By taking your time and understanding what both of your pets need, you can create a happy, peaceful home with both a cat and a dog. Prepare for the introduction. To begin with, make sure that your home has ample space for the two pets to have some space away from each other for several days, so multiple rooms in your home are necessary. Don't let the first encounter your cat has with your dog be a bad one because of an overzealous and aggressive pup. If you are introducing a new dog to your home or you have a young puppy that doesn't know its commands yet, then you need to be more cautious when introducing it to a cat. Go slow. Do NOT just let your dog chase your cat around. Keep the pets separate at first, waiting three or four days before actually introducing the animals face to face. Animals need time to get to know each other's smells and to get to know new homes before they can deal with getting to know another animal. Alternate the rooms you keep the animals in. This is so they can sniff where each other has been without the other animal being present. Smells are a very important way that animals get to know each other. Let your animals get to know the other's smell before they actually get to know them face to face. Try rubbing a towel on your dog and then putting the towel under your cat's bowl. This will help your cat get used to the dogs smell and accept it. Let the cat and dog smell each other under the door dividing them. This will help them associate the new smells they are smelling with a specific animal, even if they can't actually see it.

Wait to introduce your cat and dog until the cat seems relaxed and ready. If the cat is frightened and runs and hides whenever the dog gets near the door to their room, you need to give the cat more time. When the cat is adjusted to the smell and sounds of the dog, it may be time to let them see each other. Hold your cat in your arms until it is calm and relaxed. Then ask a family member or friend to slowly bring your dog on a leash into the room. Gradually bring the dog closer in small steps, waiting for your cat and dog to both settle down as each step of the way before getting closer. Do not let the animals make physical contact with each other, just get them used to the presence of the other. Be sure to hold the cat only if it is happy to be held. Another option is to have the cat in a crate while you bring the dog in on a leash. This will guarantee that there is not physical contact between them when they first meet. Show your pets equal amounts of love as you introduce them to each other. Animals, like people, get jealous when 'the new kid' gets more attention than them. Show both of your pets that they are loved by you and that the other animal is not feared by you. Separate your pets once again. Don't force them to interact for too long, this will just exhaust them, which can lead to conflict. Make sure the first meeting is a good one by keeping it brief and pleasant. Continue to have your dog and cat interact until they are relaxed in each other's presence. Once the cat seems comfortable enough, keep the dog on leash but let the cat go loose in the room. After several weeks of this, your dog should be trained not to go after the cat, as so you can let the dog off the leash as well, and you now hopefully have the best of animal friends enjoying life together!

Memorable Selfie

A British tourist ended up in hospital with broken arms and legs, after falling down a cliff on Mallorca, while taking a selfie photo on his mobile phone. The unnamed 38-year-old holidaymaker is believed to have fallen more than three metres near the Puig de Ros in Llucmajor. He is believed to have posed on the edge of the precipice when the rock he was standing on gave way. A witness saw the man fall and raised the alarm and while firefighters were able to successfully rescue the tourist and get him to hospital for

treatment. It is not the first time that a walker has got into trouble on the cliffs, as back in January, a 62-year-old Spaniard survived a nine metre fall off a cliff edge in the same area.

Hung Up Boxes Phone boxes could disappear in Spain because they are 'rarely used', according to a draft Bill of Law passed in Parliament. Until now, telephone line providers have been obliged to ensure enough phone boxes are set up in all public areas to cover society's needs, and also to issue free telephone directories to all households and businesses. Now, according to the draft law text, it is likely that neither will be mandatory by the end of this year at the latest. “The generalisation of use and coverage of mobile phone services means usage of telephone boxes has fallen considerably in the last few years,” it reads. Additionally, no 'operator' service has been in use for several years as it is now considered obsolete. And not one single telecommunications provider has bid for the job of installing and maintaining public phone boxes or for drawing up telephone directories, putting both in danger of extinction. Even the National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC) has questioned several times recently whether it is worth keeping either. Spain still has 18,000 telephone booths in operation, but of these, two-thirds, or 12,000, are not financially

viable, says the CNMC, costing more to run than they earn. The Commission carried out a survey which found that 88% of residents in Spain had never used a public phone booth in their lives. Telefónica says around half of Spain's telephone boxes have never been used. Yet the cost of maintaining public telephones has rise steadily over the years – most recent figures, from 2015, show that the taxpayer shells out €2.07 million a year on keeping phone boxes in operation. Given that no companies bid for the job of maintaining telephone booths and print-

ing phone directories, Telefónica was automatically designated by the government to do both for 2017 and 2018.

Who Helps The Horses? A stand-off in north-west Spain as to who should look after a group of abandoned horses has seen the animals left without care, whilst a local council and regional government battle it out. The municipal authorities say the regional government should organise veterinary checks; the Xunta, the Galicia regional government, says it is a municipal affair. In January, passers-by at a roundabout in Lugo noticed five mastiff dogs were eating the carcass of a dead horse. Winesses in the Galicia region town said that famished, abandoned and often injured horses had been on the outskirts of the town for some time, and donkeys have also been spotted regularly on the outskirts of Galician towns. Local residents have repeatedly reported the stray horses to the authorities, who continue to allegedly ignore the problem because the owners cannot maintain the animals. Local sources say the horses belong to owners without a fixed residence and "who are insolvent," making it harder for the authorities to track down the responsible parties, according to El Pais newspaper. Last year, the animal

rights group Libera! filed a motion in the Galician regional parliament for the animals to be protected. A 2017 law passed to protect local animals does not stretch to horses. The municipal and regional governments each say it is the other's responsibility to sort out the packs of stray horses, leaving the animals between a rock and a hard place, or on the edges of a city. Discussing a new law for the protection of animals

in 2017, Rubén Pérez, a spokesman for Libera! told El Pais the animals had legislatively been "left in no man's land" because the new law excludes them. The equine drama has left authorities baffled as to who should take charge and whose responsibility the animals are. The Fundación Franz Weber has apparently documented 160 recent cases of abandoned horses in Galicia.

Young Driver

The Guardia Civil is investigating a video which has appeared on social media in which a seven-year-old boy appears to be driving a car on a public road in Sevilla province. The child is accompanied by both parents, sitting on his father's lap whilst his mother films him. His father, on the video, is controlling the pedals, and

not wearing a seatbelt, whilst his son steers the car. Guardia Civil officers say: “Even though at first glance it looks like a funny anecdote, society needs to be conscious of how serious it really is.” Andalucía's Traffic Analysis and Investigation Group (GIAT) has launched a probe after receiving an anonymous tip-off from a

member of the public who saw the video online. The boy's parents could both be charged with dangerous driving. “Civil education is fundamental in the fight against road accidents, and for children of this age, parents are a basic link in the chain and a strong influence on how the next generation behaves,” the Guardia Civil says.

Dementia risk linked to some medicines A study links the long-term use of some drugs with a higher risk of dementia. In England, 1.5 to two million people are likely to be taking anticholinergics for depression, Parkinson's and bladder problems. University of East Anglia researchers found more cases of dementia in patients prescribed larger quantities of particular anticholinergics. But experts said patients should not stop taking them, as their benefits may outweigh any risk. The study found no risk with other anticholinergic medicines used to treat common conditions such as hay fever, travel sickness and stomach cramps. What did the study look at? The research, funded by Alzheimer's Society and published in the British Medical Journal, looked at

the medical records of 40,770 patients aged from 65 to 99 with a diagnosis of dementia between April 2006 and July 2015 and compared them with those of 283,933 people without dementia. It also analysed more than 27 million prescriptions making it the biggest study of its kind into the long-term impact of anticholinergic drugs in relation to dementia. What are anticholinergic drugs? They block acetylcholine, a chemical messenger that carries signals across the nervous system. Some are available on prescription only. What should patients do if they take any of these drugs? The most important thing is "not to panic", according to Dr Ian Maidment, from

Aston University. "Don't do anything suddenly. Don't stop taking your medication," he said. "As a patient, if you are concerned about it, go and speak to your doctor or your pharmacist. You don't have to see them urgently." Not taking prescribed drugs

could have serious consequences, Dr Maidment said. "Having untreated depression is also a risk as people can die from that, so it is a question of balancing risks," he added. How have experts reacted? Alzheimer's Society head of research Dr James Pickett

told the BBC that compared with the risk of dementia being caused by an unhealthy lifestyle, the potential risk of an anticholinergic drug contributing to the onset of the disease was "quite small". "We don't exactly know within those that are taking these drugs, who is at the increased risk and who isn't," he said. Dementia Research national director Prof Martin Rossor said: "It is important to be cautious about associations as they do not prove causation." Alzheimer's Research UK research director Dr Carol Routledge said: "The study didn't investigate what might cause this link between anticholinergics and dementia risk, and researchers will need to build on these findings in future studies." Rob Howard, professor of

old age psychiatry at University College London, said: "It is possible that use of some of these drugs may have actually been to treat the very earliest symptoms of Alzheimer's disease, which can be associated with low mood and lower urinary tract infections, many years before the development of dementia." Dr Parastou Donyai, associate professor of social and cognitive pharmacy at the University of Reading, said: "This type of study imagines that patients actually take their drugs as they were prescribed for them. "But we know from other research that people with long-term health conditions really only take their medication as prescribed around half of the time - the other half, people either take more or less of their medication or not at all."

120 homeopaths trying to ‘cure’ autism in UK More than 120 homeopaths in the UK are offering a “cure” for autism that involves supposedly detoxing children of the vaccines and antibiotics held responsible for the condition, the Guardian has learned. The homeopaths are accredited practitioners of CEASE “therapy”, which stands for Complete Elimination of Autistic Spectrum Expression.

CEASE was invented by a Dutch doctor called Tinus Smits, who died of cancer in 2010. His book and website, which lists therapists around the world, describe a method of ridding children of toxins – predominantly vaccines and medication – that are said to cause autism. It involves homeopathic remedies and high doses of vitamin C in excess of those recom-

mended by national guidelines. Diarrhoea, which could be a result of excessive vitamin C, and fever in children should not necessarily be cause for concern, say CEASE therapists, because it is the child’s body purging itself of toxins. “It’s absolutely appalling,” said Carol Povey, director of the centre for autism at the National Autistic Society

(NAS), which helps develop best practice. “As healthcare practitioners, homeopaths should still be working on evidence-based practice and looking at national guidelines.” The NAS is concerned by the suggestion that autism, a developmental disorder, could be cured. It is also disturbed by the claim that autism is linked to vaccines, as proposed by Andrew Wakefield – a theory that has been comprehensively discredited. Wakefield, a former gastroenterologist, was struck off the medical register over his claims. Homeopathic cures, like other bogus therapies on the internet, “hoodwink new parents when they are vulnerable” and can cause harm, said Povey. A minority of CEASE therapists in the UK are members of the Society of Homeopaths. Its regulatory body, the , has said the Society of Homeopaths must state by the middle of next month what action it will take to ensure children are safe as a condition of its reaccreditation. The PSA told the Society of Homeopaths that “CEASE therapy contravenes medical advice by apparently advising against vaccination of children, avoiding antibiotics in the case of infection and advocates high doses of vitamins not recommended for children. We are also concerned that the full name of CEASE (Complete Elimination of Autistic Spectrum Expression) strongly implies the ability to cure autism through this therapy,” it said in a statement. While the society had responded that its members “should not be practising the

aspects of CEASE that defy medical advice”, this was not clear on its website, said the PSA. Mark Taylor, chief executive of the Society of Homeopaths, said it was looking into how many of its members practised CEASE therapy and whether they complied with advice on respecting medical evidence. “We are looking at the advice we will offer over the next few weeks so there is nothing more to say at the moment,” said. Many other homeopaths who are also CEASE therapists are not members of the society. The PSA urges the public to choose only those on its accredited register. Jennifer Hautman, a homeopath who is not a Society of Homeopaths member, says she has used CEASE therapy if parents have requested it. Smits’s book, she says, is written for lay people, who then look for a therapist. “I would never promise to cure anything. I do think autism can be treated. It can be improved,” she said. Children often had gut disorders, she said, adding: “I’m not a gut specialist. That’s what Andrew Wakefield was working on. She claimed: “There are a lot of scientists finding similar results to his.” While the causes of autistic spectrum disorder are unclear, she says on her website that “ASD is often linked to vaccine damage” and asks parents to fill in a questionnaire “if you feel you or your children have been damaged by vaccines”. Asked about the CEASE theory that fever and diarrhoea help expel toxins, she said: “Generally speaking in homeopathy, discharge can

be a good thing. If you have infected wounds, you want the pus to come out. If you have diarrhoea you want it to come out rather than be constipated.” A child must not be allowed to become dehydrated, however. Smits, the creator of CEASE therapy, wrote in his book that “all kinds of detoxification reactions may occur” as a result of the treatment. Most common is fever, he said, which “should not be treated with medication, as it is a healthy reaction of the organism and not a disease! ... Eliminations like diarrhea, flu, expectoration, and badsmelling and cloudy urine should also be left alone, because they are a part of the healing process.” One child he treated had diarrhoea that “relieved his system so much that his autism almost disappeared instantly”. After 10 days, however, his mother was so concerned that she took him to the doctor, who gave him immodium to stop the diarrhoea. “Almost immediately the child had a setback and became autistic as before. The diarrhea was a perfect detoxification for his bowels and brain. Neither the doctor not the mother understood this, and the medication interfered with the progress of the cure,” claimed Smits. Ursula Kraus-Harper, a member of the Society of Homeopaths, said she has used CEASE therapy since attending a seminar with Smits in 2010 but that she uses it in conjunction with classical homeopathy. Children started improving after a certain set of detoxes, she said. She did not believe homeopathy was a cure, however.

Barbecued British ribs Ingredients 75 g sea salt 2 tablespoons white peppercorns 6 fresh bay leaves 4 racks of higher-welfare pork loin back ribs , (3kg in total) 150 g radishes BARBECUE SAUCE 225 g HP sauce 300 g tomato ketchup 170 g English mustard 150 ml Worcestershire sauce 100 ml whisky 750 ml fresh apple juice 200 ml runny honey POTATO SALAD 500 g baby new potatoes ½ a bunch of fresh dill , (15g) 1 bunch of fresh chives , (30g) 50 g pickled onions 1 eating apple 1 ripe pear 200 g Greek yoghurt 1 teaspoon English mustard Method Preheat the oven to 140ºC/275ºF/gas 1. Place the sea salt, white peppercorns and bay leaves into a pestle and mortar and bash until fine (or whiz in a blender), then decant into a jar. Rub 2 tablespoons of

flavoured salt over the racks of ribs (save the remaining salt for another day), then transfer to two baking trays and cover with tin foil. In a 25cm x 30cm high-sided tray, mix the barbecue sauce ingredients together. Transfer all the trays to the oven for 3 hours, placing the sauce tray at the very bottom uncovered, adding a splash of water to loosen, if needed. When the time’s up, remove the trays from the oven, adding a splash of water to each of the rib trays to deglaze. Divide a quarter of the sauce (roughly 300g) between the rib trays (freeze the rest for another day), turning the ribs with tongs to coat, then place the ribs directly onto the bars of the oven, with the empty sauce tray directly below. Place a small handful of whisky wood chips into a metal sieve and set them alight. Once smoking, put the sieve into a metal bowl, place at the very bottom of the oven and smoke the ribs for 30 minutes, or until sticky and caramelised. Meanwhile, make your potato salad. Scrub the

potatoes, then cook in a pan of boiling salted water for 15 minutes, or until tender, then drain and leave to cool slightly. Pick the dill, then finely chop with the chives, and

place in a large bowl. Slice the pickled onions, then core and finely matchstick the apple and pear, and place in the bowl. Add the yoghurt, mustard and warm potatoes, then

toss together to coat. Taste and season to perfection. Transfer the racks to a board and slice into individual ribs, drizzling any juices from the tray over the top. Finely slice the

radishes and sprinkle over the top, then serve with the potato salad.

Ingredients 6 cherries in kirsch (and some of the kirsch from the jar or tin) 100ml cloudy apple juice ½ lemon, juiced 100ml vodka 50ml amaretto 1 egg white ice

Method Take six shot glasses and drop a cherry into the bottom of each one along with a drizzle of the kirsch. Put all of the other ingredients, except for the ice, into a cocktail shaker and shake hard until frothy. You can also do this in a

blender if that’s easier. Once frothy add the ice and shake until the outside of the cocktail shaker feels very cold. Double strain the mixture into a jug then carefully share the mixture out between the glasses. Prep: 10 mins Serves: 6

TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

Trust me you will not be disappointed in season two of The Handmaid’s Tale which has started being screened all around the world, including RTE in Ireland, yet UK-rights holders Channel Four have not tipped their hand yet over screen dates. That’s stupid as fans just go elsewhere to get their fix of the show, and the first two episodes deliver big time. This dystopian tale is magnificent, and what I’ve enjoyed is the different direction it has taken, which I did not expect (no spoilers….see below!). Elisabeth Moss as Offred/June Osborne gives once again a killer performance, but we also get some fascinating flashbacks to what happened as it all started to get nasty, and not just with Offred as well. The Handmaid’s Tale was unlucky to have Big Little Lies up against in the US award ceremonies last year, but this time it has a clear run, and is one of the most brutally uncomfortable pieces of television I have ever seen…..check out the first 15 minutes of the first

A Handmaid’s Triumph

episode. But we get some hope as well, and this Hulu subscription show is television drama at the very top of it’s game. It’s just a shame that UK viewers are being treated badly by Channel Four over it. Though listings have been kept under wraps, I optimistically suspect that Channel Four could well slot in season two of The Handmaid’s Tale in the Sunday night Homeland slot, which finishes its

penultimate season for UK viewers this weekend. I’ve watched at US pace, and I have to say that I nearly rose from my armchair and applauded the finale this week. It was that good with some great twists and performances. To think that back in season three, most of us thought that Homeland should have been canned because it ran out of steam! Coronation Street writers Simon Crowther and Chris Fewtrell have done the rare

deed of coming up with a new BBC-1 sitcom that isn’t a total dud. ‘Home From Home’ stars Johnny Vegas as a Potteries-area newsagent who has seen his dream come true of buying a Lake District lodge. He and his wife move up to Ullswater, and discover their neighbours, including Emilia Fox, are southerners with a very different background. You know really what’s going to happen with a “weekly catastrophe”, but

the characters are likeable and Vegas is a fine performer. Just produce a better script guys! What is it the infatuation of the UK press and social media to leak and expose every plot line in soaps and dramas? Leaks in the last few days have spoiled some great surprises coming up later this month in Coronation Street, one of them thanks to the rivals at the old BBC! I’m left to wonder why

people don’t simply want a treat of not knowing what will happen (like in Homeland)? It’s a great shame, and the US shows seem to do a far better job of keeping quiet compared to the Brits. More doesn’t mean good in the world of television, and it so it was in the case of Benidorm (ITV) which aired for the last time on Wednesday. Executives and producers need to have the courage to say that a good idea has exhausted all avenues, and that was the case four to five years ago for Benidorm. No reason though why it should not come back in a few years time with a new cast, and crucially some fresh ideas which could make the viewer laugh. There appear to be no surprises so far from the US networks as to what they are keeping on for next season, as the majority of their newer offerings over recent months have tanked (deservedly). I’ll scream right here if something stupid happens in any favourites being pulled, but so far so good.

With the party in full swing, Aidan gives Johnny a farewell present as everyone raises a toast to Jenny and Johnny. Toyah is happily watching Susie being passed round the pub, but when Sally goes to hand Susie to Aidan, she panics and swoops in. Aidan and Toyah’s eyes meet, and while Toyah quickly looks away, Aidan continues to

look at Susie. Is he piecing it all together? Finding an opportunity, Aidan picks up Susie, battling to make sense of it all. Later at the cottage, Eva is on the phone to Toyah when there’s a knock on the door. She’s shocked to see Aidan. Admitting that he found the address for the cottage in Toyah’s handbag, Aidan apologises to Eva for how he spoke to her when he found out she was pregnant. Eva is confused as to what exactly Aidan knows, but when Aidan brings up Susie, Eva bursts into tears and tells him she’s sorry. Soon afterwards, Eva discovers that Aidan has purposely left her engagement ring. Later, when Toyah video calls Eva at the cottage, she panics on seeing Aidan’s coat on the sofa. Eva tells Toyah about Aidan’s visit and how she thinks he wants to get back together. Back on the street, Toyah goes to speak to Aidan. Wednesday Hour-long episode Eva toys with her engagement ring, hoping it’s a sign that Aidan wants to try again. However, when Aidan doesn’t arrive to open up at the factory, Johnny presumes that he’s slept in and lets himself into Aidan’s flat.

Bake Off: The Professionals

Sunday - Channel 4 Professional duos from across the UK go head to head, aiming to impress judges and celebrated pastry chefs Cherish Finden and Benoit Blin, and

progress to the next round. In the first episode, the teams must finely craft two batches of uniform miniature classics - 24 conversations and 24 tartes aux fruits - in just three and a half hours. This is followed by the

Showpiece, in which a reinvention of the Black Forest gateau is required in five hours. This new show is presented by former Bake Off contestant Liam Charles and comedian Tom Allen.

Tabula Rasa: Spectre

Saturday - ITV Jeremy Clarkson steps into Chris Tarrant's shoes to host the first in a special weeklong revival of the quiz, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.

Contestants sit in the famous chair to answer a maximum of 15 questions, hoping to win ÂŁ1 million and join original millionaires Judith Keppel, David Edwards, Robert Brydges, Pat Gibson and Ingram

Wilcox. As ever, each player has three lifelines - Ask the Audience, Phone a Friend and 50:50, and, of course, there are also some new and exciting twists along the way.

Sunday - Channel 4 First episode of a Belgian crime drama about a woman with amnesia in an institution

who becomes a key figure in a missing person’s case, and must recover her memories to prove her innocence. While visits from her

family bring the past back to light, she remains uncertain if she is constructing fantasies or recovering memories.

ADVICE: Sid wanted some advice on backups.

Q

I have a 1TB hard drive for backing up my computer. I have it set to back up midnight every Friday using the windows 7 backup program. The problem is although the computer is backed up I cannot access any folders or files as it has been saved as a disk Image. What free back up program do you suggest that will run in conjunction with the windows 7 back up program so that I can access files and folders on the Hard Drive?

A

Hi Sid, you are absolutely correct, the data that is backed up by Windows 7’s backup application stores the data in such a format that it is not readable directly, you need to go back into the backup program to read the data. Like you I much prefer to store my backups (space allowing) as a direct copy of the individual files – that way I can see what data has been backed up and access the files directly should I need to. There are a number of applications out there that will allow you do perform backups in this way, one of the best ones that I have used is called “Allway Sync” and you can get a free copy of it at www.allwaysync.com The great thing about this product is that it will, should you require, keep multiple locations in sync – by that I mean if you delete a file from one location, allway sync will remove the file from the backup, keeping both locations exactly synchronised. It has the facility to be scheduled, so you could still run your backups at midnight on Fridays and as I mentioned before it stores the files in the same format as they are in the source location so you can view the files directly in the destination location.

MAZDA MX-5 RF SPORT BLACK ON SALE FROM 28TH MAY Mazda has added another stylish limited edition model to its MX-5 line-up. Marked out by its free-of-charge Eternal Blue Mica paint with contrasting black rear spoiler and door mirrors, the £25,695 RF Sport Black goes on sale from the 28th May. Like the convertible Z-Sport special edition, the newcomer follows Mazda’s long held tradition of producing distinctive limited edition MX-5s with stand-out looks, enhanced equipment and genuine exclusivity. The black rear spoiler, piano black door mirrors and gunmetal alloy wheels contrast attractively with the Eternal Blue Mica paint, while inside unique floor mats, scuff plates and badging further distinguish this stand out MX-5. Based on the 2.0-litre 160ps SE-L Nav, the Sport Black is upgraded with standard leather seats, rain-sensing front wipers, rear parking sensors and automatic headlights, which added to the free-of-charge Mica paint makes this exclusive model great value. In addition, the standard limited slip differential ensures the Sport Black has the dynamic ability to match its looks. Like the rest of the RF range, the retractable hardtop consists of front, middle and rear roof sections, and a rear screen. When the top is lowered the front

and middle portions are stowed together, while the rear glass sits behind the seats, leaving the rear roof section in place to create a unique open-topped look, and a cabin feeling that combines a sense of open air freedom with the impression of being securely ensconced within the car. Commenting on the launch of the new RF Sport Black, Peter Allibon, Sales Director Mazda Motors UK said, “I’m delighted that we can offer an exclusive RF model to our customers. With it joining the Z-Sport convertible in the line-up, we now have an unrivalled choice of MX-5s in the range, which means that anyone wanting to drive a distinctive and stylish roadster can find what they need with one of our special edition models.” On sale since the 1st March, the Mazda MX-5 Z-Sport stands-out thanks to its deep cherry red fabric hood, 17-inch black BBS wheels, and free-of-charge Machine Grey Metallic paint. It will be joined in Mazda dealerships by the MX-5 RF Sport Black from the 28th May. Ahead of its launch, the new Mazda MX-5 RF Sport Black will be exclusively revealed at the 2018 MX-5 Owners Club Spring Rally at Goodwood Motor Circuit on the 29th April.

SEAT’S ELECTRIC eMiis ARE NOW ON THE ROAD IN BARCELONA

SEAT has released a fleet of electric eMii prototypes into circulation to kick off the car sharing service aimed at the more than 1,000 employees of the SEAT Metropolis:Lab Barcelona and the Pier 01 Barcelona Tech City, the benchmark hub for Europe’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. As well as sharing the eMiis, they also share expertise and workspace. We ride along in one to discover the benefits of car sharing and how SEAT’s eMii fleet works: - Sustainable mobility:“It’s practical and ideal for the city. I usually take one to attend meetings in Barcelona. When I return it, another colleague can reserve it and take it out”, says Sergi Vila, who is responsible for Operations and Finance at the SEAT Metropolis: Lab Barcelona and a regular user of the fleet of eMiis. - An entire fleet at a single click: Users can reserve a car from the fleet via a mobile app. “You choose the day, the car and the time you need the vehicle…and you’re done!”, adds Vila. After making the reservation, the system sends a digital key that enables the user “to access the car with a single click, without the need for a physical key”, he explains as he unlocks the door. In the end, “the system is very simple and intuitive”, he assures. - 160 kilometres to go the distance: When he returns the car to the carpark, Sergi plugs

it in to the mains. “Recharging is a simple procedure” and the batteries, located where the petrol tank would normally be found, take 8 hours to charge at the slow recharging points, and only 35 minutes at the fast charge points. Once the process is complete, the eMii has a total range of 160 kilometres. - From having to sharing: Estimations point to over 36 million users of car sharing services by 2025. “People have gone from wanting to own goods to simply wanting to use them, like a service”, says Vila while driving around Barcelona. For this reason it is important “to commit to projects that promote the use of shared cars”. With this pioneering project in Barcelona, SEAT takes another step forward towards the goal of analysing and finding solutions to the challenges facing future mobility. In addition, the data provided by the fleet of eMiis will be added to the research and development of technologies spearheaded by SEAT’s digital lab. SEAT is the only company that designs, develops, manufactures and markets cars in Spain. A member of the Volkswagen Group, the multinational has its headquarters in Martorell (Barcelona), exporting 80% of its vehicles, and is present in over 80 countries through a network of 1,700 dealerships. In 2017, SEAT achieved worldwide sales of nearly 470,000 vehicles.

PAIR OF RARE CLASSIC LANCIAS HEAD TO AUCTION Two rare post-war Lancias both styled by legendary designer Pininfarina

Silverstone Auctions is offering classic car enthusiasts the opportunity to own two rare Lancias at its upcoming May Sale taking place at Silverstone Circuit. A rare Lancia Aprilia Farina Cabriolet and Lancia Aurelia B20 GT Series IV will go to auction on 19th May. “When a car combines luxury, performance, looks and charisma it’s the golden recipe. It’s difficult to look at these two very desirable examples of legendary Pininfarina design without wanting to take them home,” explains Nick Whale, managing director, Silverstone Auctions. Considered as one of the finest examples of Pininfarina’s post-war cabriolets, the supremely elegant Lancia Aprilia for sale is one of just ten chassis to receive the attention of Batista Farina himself. Built in 1946 the Aprilia was first registered on the 1st January 1947 in Switzerland. By the time it reached its second owner, Jean Pierre Baumgartner, a well-known Swiss Lancia enthusiast, the Aprilia was in a sorry state having spent many years in a field, so the decision was taken to restore it, returning it to its original appearance. The restoration was carried out over five years at the hands of a master Lancia specialist and included a bare metal respray and full interior refurbishment. The Aprilia was finished in gleaming white with a wine-red leather interior and a bespoke hood in dark blue mohair. The Lancia was later sold to a Swiss gentleman and is now for sale from its fourth owner, who has transported the car to the

UK to be offered on the open market for the first time in its life, with an auction estimate of £220,000 to £250,000. The second of the Lancias for sale is an Aurelia B20 GT Series IV and is one of just 573 original, UK-supplied right-hand drive models built during 1954. A simply revolutionary car of its time, the design combined both luxury and performance, featuring the world's first production V6 engine. Cared for by just five owners in its time, the Aurelia was restored in the 1990s and finished in beautiful Baby Blue (Azzuro Agnano-Celeste Aurelia) with Oatmeal upholstered interior with Tan leather piping. It and is presented today with superb bright work, new overcarpets and a Nardi wood steering wheel. After recent expenditure of over £7,000 with marque specialist Omnicron, the Aurelia is on the button, ready to enjoy and will be offered with an estimate of £100,000 to £120,000. “Both of these wonderful classics are rarely available on the UK market making this an unmissable opportunity for collectors. “When first built, cars of this calibre were only accessible to wealthy privateers, and today they have a whole new level of appeal,” concludes Nick. St. Albans Super Sixes

The second staging of GolfSixes returns this weekend at the Centurian Golf Club in St Albans, and here’s everything you need to know! With the addition of female teams and the retention of themed golf holes that include holes with a shot clock or nearest the pin contest, Golf Sixes returns for a second year - a week after the PGA Tour held their own two-man pairs competition at the Zurich Classic. Ryder Cup and Solheim Cup captains Thomas Bjorn and Catriona Matthew are the first mixed team to be competing, and are joined by two other female-only teams as Charley Hull and Georgia Hall form an English team and Mel Reid and Carlota Ciganda reprise their Solheim Cup pairing for a European team. Defending champions Lucas Bjerregaard and Thorbjørn Olesen(pictured) have also returned to represent Denmark in the fast-paced competition as the 16 teams go head to head on the specifically designed 6 hole course for a total prize fund of €1 million with the eventual winners

Playas Youngsters

The latest set of matches for the Escuela Racing Playas De Orihuela saw the Pre-benjamin side (pictured) roll over Cox in an away win by four goals to nil. Meanwhile the girl’s team recorded an excellent twoone win over Sporting Plaza Algiers club, in a great example of how they have been developing.

Elsewhere, the Cadet side beat Dream Elche two-one, whilst the Children’s category team thrashed Bigastro, seven-nil. In a cracking weekend, the Alevins won at home to Dolores, four-one; the Cherubs drew nil-nil at Rojales; and the Benjamins had a six-nil away victory at Callosa.

receiving €100,000 each. Matches, starting on Saturday, will be played over all six holes with 1 point awarded for each hole won. The winner of each match will be the player with most points at the end of six holes. The format is greensomes, where both players in each team hit tee shots on each hole. The best tee shot is selected and then the team alternate play of all subsequent shots required to complete the hole. Tomorrow(Saturday May 5th), the 16 teams will be split into four groups of four teams, with the top two teams from each group progressing to the knockout stages. The quarter-finals, semi-finals, 3rd/4th place play-off match and the final will all be contested this Sunday. In the group stages, 3 points will be given for winning a match, 1 point will be given for a draw, and 0 points for a loss.

La Liga Loss

Sky have lost the live TV rights to show La Liga matches in the UK and Ireland after Eleven Sports secured an exclusive threeyear deal. It brings to an end Sky's 20-year association with the Spanish league's top flight. Founded in 2015, Eleven Sports is owned by Italian Andrea Radrizzani, who became Leeds United chairman in 2017. The partnership will begin from the start of the 2018-19 season and run until the end of the 2020-21 campaign.

"Eleven Sports are an excellent partner for us in various markets across Europe and we are delighted to have the opportunity to work with them in the UK and Ireland - important markets for us in which La Liga is very popular," said Javier Tebas, president of La Liga. Eleven Sports also holds La Liga rights in Belgium and Poland. It’s likely that Eleven will launch an internet channel as well as sub-letting coverage to other broadcasters.

Farewell Andres

Barcelona legend Andres Iniesta will leave the La Liga champions at the end of the season, as widely anticipated. The Spain midfielder, 33, has made 669 appearances in 16 seasons, winning 31 trophies with Barca and three major tournaments for Spain. Iniesta, who has been linked to a move to the Chinese Super League, has

not said where he will play next season. "I said I would never play against Barca so it is not going to be in Europe," he said. It is a difficult day for me to be here saying goodbye when I've spent my whole life here," he said in an emotional news conference watched by his family, teammates and manager Ernesto Valverde.

Third Division News

Play-off chasing Eldense sprung a one-nil victory at Valencia third division leaders Orihuela last Sunday, with Levante overhauling them at the top, with both sides on 78 points. The visitors won for the first time at Los Arcos, with Five new players lined up for CD Torrevieja as they were thrashed 5-1 by Preferente play- the goal coming in the 53rd off contenders Hercules at the Nelson Mandela stadium last Sunday lunchtime. minute from Terol. The match had been switched because of demolition work at the Vicente Garcia stadium, and it proved to be a demolition job by the visitors who were three-nil up by the interval, and five to the good by the 64th minute. Torry’s problems deepened when Greuchi got his marching orders in the 70th minute for a second caution, and with Hercules looking forward to their remaining crucial fixtures, Torry actually contrived to put the ball into the back of the next through Manuel just two minutes later! Three matches remain in Torrevieja’s wretched season with the only interest being the margin of defeats they have to endure. After defeat to second-placed Hercules, Torry travel this Friday evening to third-in-the table Villajoyosa, who must be licking their lips in anticipation. Torrevieja remain 12th in the table, a place above CD Almoradi (pictured pre-kick off), who drew nil-nil in their local derby at FB Redovan on Sunday.Almoradi’s Achilles Heel in recent

Getting back to the top is not going to be easy for Orihuela, as they look forward to the play-off matches, and there are two fixtures left including the next clash, which is a trip to thirdplaced Castellon this Sunday. 11th placed Crevillente drew nil-nil at Paterna at the

weekend, and now entertain struggling Almazora on Sunday. Elche Ilicitano remain too close to the relegation area for comfort, not helped by their May Day holiday loss, one-nil to CD Roda. Elche go to the tean above them in the table this weekend, namely Rayo Ibense.

Lacklustre Monte

RACING SAN MIGUEL 3 CD MONTESINOS 0 Montesinos have gone from being unable to stop scoring to being unable find the net in a matter of weeks, and the squad almost seem looking forward to the summer break. It is clear that the pre-season objective, following last season´s promotion to the Valencia Primera Regional Division, Group Eight, has been more than achieved. A top five finish in the group would have been hap-

times has been their inability to score goals away from home, and this was again the case at Redovan where they had a lot of the play but were unable to create chances into goals. Almoradi return to the Sadrian stadium this Sunday morning, as they welcome league leaders, Jove Espanol. A last minute leveller killed off any outside mathematical hopes of CD Thader making it into the play-offs, as a string of disappointing results has seen them slip down the table to seventh place, some seven points behind third-placed Villajoyosa. Thader captain Lloyd Dummett put the home side in front in the 59th minute, having had keeper Ortega sent off in the 22nd minute. It looked like a battling three points were in the bag, only for lowly Petrelense to get an 89th minute equaliser through Miguel, and now Thader just have two games left for the season to fade out. That’s because this weekend’s scheduled match with Calpe was scrapped when the team were thrown out of the league a few weeks ago.

pily accepted by both club and supporters, but the players appear to have stopped doing the things that got them to the third place they held up to a couple of weeks ago. Last weekend Monte (in their away blue kit) made the very short journey to San Miguel in a massive derby game, and has been the case in the past few seasons, those bragging rights went to Racing who won this

game comfortably. Antonio Sanchez with two goals, and Antonio Erineo were the scorers. This result also means that San Miguel go above Monte into fourth place with just one match left of the campaign this Sunday, when Monte entertain Sporting Guardamar with a 6.00 pm kick-off. The visitors will have all to play for as they are in 14th position and trying to avoid relegation.

Barca Champions

Real Nailbiter

REAL MADRID 2 BAYERN MUNICH 2 (AGG 4-3) DEPORTIVO 2 BARCELONA 4 A hat-trick from Lionel Messi sealed the La Liga title for Barcelona as they beat Deportivo La Coruna on Sunday evening. It was not an easy win at the Riazor for the newly crowned champions, although they took a two-goal lead with Philippe Coutinho (7) and Messi (38) netting before Lucas Perez (40) deservedly pulled a goal back for Depor in the first half. The hosts got themselves level through Emre Colak (64) before Messi netted a quick-fire double late on (82 and 85) to round off his hat-trick and ensure that the La Liga trophy returns to the Nou Camp. The title win means more success for Barca, after securing the Copa del Rey the previous weekend against Sevilla. Coach Ernesto Valverde was relieved more than anything as his side finally sealed their 25th La Liga title at the weekend with four games to spare. "When you're chasing something for the whole season, it's more a feeling of 'finally' when you eventually get there," Valverde said, playing down the euphoria of his first-ever league title in Spain. "At the end of the day, the league is such a long competition. You have to make sure you get through autumn and through the tough winter, and we have come through it all. We have got there with room to spare. I think we have been the best team." Next up is the small matter of El Clasico, at home to Real Madrid this Sunday evening.

Reigning European champions Real Madrid reached their third successive Champions League final as they edged out Bayern Munich in a thrilling semi-final second leg. Trailing 2-1 after the first leg in Germany, Bayern needed a win at the Bernabeu to reach the final but it finished 2-2 as Real clinched a 4-3 aggregate victory. Joshua Kimmich scored early on for the German champions from six yards out, before Karim Benzema headed in for Real from Marcelo's fine left-wing cross eight minutes later. A second for Benzema, after a horrendous mistake from Bayern goalkeeper Sven Ulreich, put Real in control, although Bayern's on-loan James Rodriguez then scored against his parent club to set up a dramatic finale. Bayern had chances to win it, but Corentin Tolisso and Thomas Muller's efforts were saved by Keylor Navas and Mats Hummels headed wide as the Spanish side held on. Real will face either Liverpool In the final in Kiev, Ukraine, on Saturday May 26th.

Play-Off Place

ELCHE 2 LLEIDA ESPORTIU 0 Elche booked their place in the Segunda Division B end-ofseason play-offs on Sunday by beating a potential rival to their spot at the Martinez Valero stadium. The victory guaranteed the Ilicitanos at least third place in the table, and they remain a point behind second-placed Villarreal, wih two matches remaining. If Elche can overhaul Villarreal, their route through the playoffs will be less complicated as they would avoid the possibility of any early elimination matches. As for last Sunday’s match, watched by nine thousand spectators- the biggest home league attendance of the season, Elche looked a bit disjointed until an excellent goal from Nino (pictured above) just before the interval calmed the nerves down. Gonzalo Verdú got the second goal for Elche in the 66th minute, and it should have been three, a couple of minutes from time after Lolo Plá missed a penalty. Coach Pacheta admitted that Nino’s goal came as a relief for him, but added that the side kept another clean sheet at home. The next game is the final home match of the regular league season, as rivals Hercules make the short journey this Sunday for a 6.00 pm kick-off. The match will be all-pay, even for season ticket holders.

Relieved Zidane

No Move Neymar Forget It!

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos says they will not give Barcelona a guard of honour in El Clasico at the Nou Camp on Sunday. Barca full-back Jordi Alba has suggested they should be given a guard of honour by their rivals prior to kick-off to acknowledge them winning La Liga last weekend (see above). But Ramos has rejected the idea with Real Madrid head coach Zinedine Zidane instructing his side not to respect Barcelona's league triumph. The defender said:- “What Zidane says is gospel. We're making too much fuss out of all this.” "Barca have the title, which is what they wanted, but there will be no guard of honour full stop.”

Zinedine Zidane (pictured on Tuesday) admitted it was not good for the heart and that Real Madrid had “suffered” to reach a third successive Champions League final in a row but said: “It’s better this way.” “It was a mad game but a lovely one,” Zidane said after Real withstood intense pressure from Bayern Munich to get a one goal aggregate win. “You have to suffer in football. You can’t reach a final without suffering and it’s even better like this. Well, maybe not for the heart. But it is.” Asked what his team have that means somehow they always find a way through, Zidane replied: “It’s not just the team, it’s the club. It’s a history that comes from a long way back and now it’s a history we are writing, just as those other teams did. This team never surrenders. We know it is hard but we believe in what we do and keep fighting.” “I feel very good, because when you do something like this it’s very nice. We like football because of this kind of emotion. We still haven’t won anything, but we’re in the final and that’s enormous. We can be happy because it’s not normal to be in the final for a third year in a row.”

Former Brazilian international, Ronaldo de Lima, has stated that his compatriot, Neymar, won’t be joining Real Madrid from PSG at the end of the current season. Ronaldo said the 26-year-old forward is happy with life in Paris. Neymar shocked the footballing world when he quit Barcelona for PSG in a world-record deal worth over 200 million euros last summer. The Brazilian international’s first nine months in France have been surrounded by speculation that he will return to Spain one day with Real Madrid. But Ronaldo, a former Real Madrid star, told the newspaper, AS, “I’ve heard a lot of that that Neymar can end up at Real Madrid but the truth is that I think it’s very difficult.” “He just recently signed for PSG for a lot of money, I do not think that money is a problem for PSG.” “Even if Real Madrid puts [forward] a very large number I do not think that PSG will change their mind. “I see it quite complicated that some day Neymar can play at Real Madrid; right now I think it is impossible. “He will still be young, but now I think it is impossible”.

Battle Resumed

FIXTURES Friday 4 May English Premier League 21:00 Brighton and Hove Albion V. Manchester United Scottish Premiership 20:45 Partick Thistle V. Ross County

A spectacular performance on home turf saw Spain's Rafa Nadal clinch his 11th Barcelona Open title on Sunday after dispatching Stefanos Tsitsipas in two straight sets. The 'King of Clay' was already celebrating his 400th win on his favourite surface the day before, and a week earlier netted another 11-times title after clearing up at the Rolex Monte Carlo Masters. Now, the Mallorca-born world number one has joined legendary John McEnroe in snaffling his 77th trophy since the start of the so-called 'Open Era', and is only beaten in title totals by Jimmy Connors, Roger Federer and Ivan Lendl. Unseeded Tsitsipas (pictured below), who is just 19 and already sits at number 63 in the world, had never played his hero Rafa before, but put up a good fight in the Conde de Godó Cup final before falling to the unstoppable Spanish ace, who has now won his 55th clay tournament. Despite the rain and wind, which led to the match at Barcelona Royal Tennis Club being stopped several times – or perhaps because of it – Nadal displayed a clear advantage over his young rival, who was no match for the star's famous forehand, sharp focus and relentless authority, leading to a 6-2 6-1 victory. The Barcelona Open final was Rafa's 19th match win on the trot, having not dropped a single one of his last 46 sets.

Carolina Conquers

Spain’s unstoppable Carolina Marín won her fourth consecutive European Championship at the weekend – the first female in badminton in history to achieve the feat. Carolina, who will be 25 in June, took the gold in just 35 minutes after dispatching Russia's Evgeniya Kosetskaya by 21-15 and 21-7. Even more special than beating the record of three European championships on the trot set by Denmark's Camilla Martin in 1996, 1998 and 2000 was the fact that Carolina's swift victory took place in the stadium named after her in her native city of Huelva in Spain's far south-west. The Olympic gold medallist has always dreamed of winning a major championship title in front of her local people on home turf, although she had never imagined this would happen in the Carolina Marín Stadium, which was packed out with over 4,000 spectators. She thanked 'everyone who came along' and said she hoped they had 'enjoyed the whole of the European championship tournament'.

MotoGP returns to Europe this weekend at Jerez, the Spanish circuit renamed to Circuito de JerezAngel Nieto in honour of the MotoGP great who sadly passed away last year. The 4,423m layout has not only been renamed, but it has also undergone a complete resurface. Although it is one of four races held in Spain, it is the only one given the title of Spanish Grand Prix and this highly charged event always attracts a huge crowd which fills the hillsides surrounding the track. With the stunning stadium section always packed to the rafters and the final ‘Jorge Lorenzo’ corner sure to provide some fireworks, everything is perfectly placed to go down to the wire as five riders arrive at the track within eight points. After his sixth straight Americas GP win, Spain’s Marc Marquez(pictured above) comes into the Spanish GP off the back of a big statement in the title fight and only one point off the lead – but now it’s back to Europe and the Circuito de Jerez. With only one win in Andalucia, in 2014, it’s a track that the number 93 often picks out as one he finds tougher – will that be true this season? The man he’s chasing down in the standings is currently Italy’s Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team). After winning the opening race of the season and then taking two solid top six finishes, ‘DesmoDovi’ is back on top. He came fifth last year at Jerez, but was a good haul of points below where he is at this point in 2018. A good omen? Consistency is the Italian’s calling card. His teammate, Jorge Lorenzo, was top Ducati in 2017, however – taking his first podium in red. And what of Marquez’ teammate Dani Pedrosa? After breaking his wrist in the Argentina GP, the threetime World Champion put in a stunning ride in Texas to – somehow – come home seventh on one of the most challenging tracks on the calendar.

Humble Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton believes other Formula 1 drivers would celebrate an inherited victory more than he did in Azerbaijan on Sunday, because he is "wired differently". Hamilton took the lead in the closing laps after Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas suffered a right rear puncture, and he delayed the podium ceremony to seek out the Finn to commiserate with him postrace. The reigning world champion believes he has been on the receiving end of races determined by luck in the past, with other winning drivers being more exuberant in their celebrations. "This is a lottery race, and whether or not you use 'gifted' as the word, I don't know if I would use that, but it was a fortunate race for me," said Hamilton. "I was standing on the podium believing that Valtteri should have been standing there, because I felt that he had earned it. "There have been days I've been on a podium where I've lost a grand prix, and it's been gifted to someone else, be it a couple of the drivers that are here, or one of the drivers that have left.” "The happiness they've had, doesn't matter whether they've earned it or not, fingers up in the air... I'm just wired differently.”

NO GO RIO

Former Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand says he is "disappointed" after being refused a professional boxing licence. The 39-year-old, who retired from football in 2015, launched his new career in September. The British Boxing Board of Control (BBBC) said they would not be reviewing his application, Ferdinand said. "It is with a heavy heart that I am hanging up my gloves," he wrote on Facebook.

MIAMI DATE

Formula 1 is planning to hold a grand prix in Miami, Florida, next year. The Miami City Commission will vote next week on a proposal to conclude a deal with F1, with a view to the first race being held in October 2019. If the event comes off, it would be the first street race in the US since a grand prix in Phoenix, Arizona in 1991. The Miami race would be the second F1 race in the United States, in addition to the US Grand Prix in Austin, Texas.

FIGHTING THE DROP The Premier League moves into the final stages, with most of the interest generated by the battle against relegation, as we look at the runners and riders ahead of this weekend’s matches. 15th-placed West Ham are looking nervously over their shoulders after just one win in eight. Confidence is low after consecutive 4-1 defeats to Arsenal and Manchester City, and a training ground row between David Moyes and Andy Carroll points to unrest behind the scenes. Saturday's game against an out-of-sorts Leicester might be their best hope of claiming a vital victory from their last three games. They then face Manchester United and Everton at home. Their old boss Sam Allardyce is unlikely to go easy on them on the final day. Huddersfield, level on points with West Ham, have tough games to come and the second-worst goal difference of the bottom seven sides behind Stoke. Getting any kind of result from their final three games would be an impressive feat. Manchester City will be eager to lift the Premier League trophy in style at home on Sunday, then there is a trip to Chelsea before they face Arsenal in Arsene Wenger's final Premier league game in charge.

Swansea in 17th place have not won in six Premier League games, leaving them just one point above the bottom three with three games to play. The meetings with Southampton and Stoke, the two teams directly below them, are likely to be decisive. Carvalhal's side will need to make their home advantage count. Southampton blew the relegation battle open with their 2-1 win over Bournemouth on Saturday - their first in the Premier League since the start of February - but there remains a big job ahead. They face Everton at Goodison Park before the vital trip to Swansea next week, and with Manchester City the visitors on the final day of the season, they might need to have their safety already assured. Three points adrift of safety and with only two games left to play, Stoke's prospects look bleak, and they entertain a buoyant Crystal Palace tomorrow. West Brom's resurgence has surely come too late, but they remain five points off 17th-placed Swansea with only two games to play. They will hope to continue their upturn in form against Tottenham this weekend and then Crystal Palace, but it would take a minor miracle for them to escape the drop.

CHAMPIONSHIP FINALE The Football League Championship reaches its final day this Sunday afternoon and five teams can still join first relegated club Sunderland in League One next season, with Reading, Birmingham, Barnsley, Burton and Bolton all in the mix. There are stacks of permutations but a lot of neutrals will be marvelling at a potential Houdini escape act that tiny Burton Albion have produced from a seemingly doomed position. After three wins on the trot for the Brewers, they now have a final match to come at Preston North End, as the Lancashire side are trying to sneak into the play-offs.

Burton though also need other results to go their way. Bolton must beat Nottingham Forest to stand any chance of survival, and they may need to win well. Barnsley will stay up if they win away at Derby, but the Rams have their own priorities as well to guarantee themselves a place in the play-offs. A win over Fulham would mathematically secure Birmingham's place in the Championship next season, whilst Reading are still technically in trouble, but many permutations would have to go against them if they lose at Cardiff. A point in Wales would secure their status.
