CAMPING CANNIBAL

drunken brawl between two British men at the San Javier camping site (stock picture) took a bloody twist last Saturday night, in a scene straight out of a Hannibal Lecter movie, as one of them gnawed off part of the other’s cheek. The cannibalistic twist saw the 47-year-old British national, only identified as JB, being arrested by the San Javier local police, with a receptionist, called Siri, telling the La Verdad newspaper that she spotted what appeared to be a “piece of meat” on the ground and a “pool of blood” amidst false claims that a man had been bitten by a dog. A group of children were walking by and saw the men involved in a brawl and called for help, with the receptionist rushing to the scene.

The man who had been assaulted, identified as 49year-old JD, was discovered as having a piece of his left cheek missing, with his jaw bone clearly visible, and officers immediately summoned an ambulance to take the victim to hospital. Police sources told La Verdad that JD was so drunk, that he had no sense of what had happened in the wake of the attack at 9.45 pm, whilst the assailant managed to run away, before he was eventually caught later, and handed over to the Guardia Civil to face felony charges of assault. The men, who were said to be “friends”, had been drinking with their wives on the terraces of their bungalows at San Javier since the afternoon. The two families had been renting property

on the site for “several months”, according to Siri the receptionist, and had “never caused any trouble”. Siri told La Verdad that one man started an argu-

ment, and as the other tried to calm him down, the assault then took place as they were apparently walking away from the terrace to go to the bar on the site.

MONARCH DETHRONED

M

onday’s collapse of Monarch Airlines led to the UK’s biggest peacetime repatriation at the start of the week, with 110 thousand people being brought back home on specially chartered planes, at an estimated cost of 60 million pounds to the British government. Some of those repatriations include passengers using Monarch on services to Alicante-Elche airport, with the company running up to eight services per day during the high season from Gatwick, Luton, Leeds,

Manchester, and Birmingham. The accountants KPMG announced in the early hours of Monday that Monarch, Britain’s longestsurviving airline brand, had been placed into administration after 49 years of business, and that all further flights from the UK had been cancelled. One implication of Monarch’s collapse concerns a number of British postal courier services in Spain that have used the company to ferry mail to and

from the UK at a comparatively low cost, which will

mean they will have to make other arrangements.

A Valencia judge has started to take oral evidence on a charge of prevarication concerning the ex-mayor of Santa Pola, Miguel Zaragoza, for allowing live entertainment based at a kiosk in Cala Ermita del Rosario, that was only licensed to sell refreshments to beach-goers. Prosecutors are calling for a year-long prison sentence and seven years of disbarment from public office, with Zaragoza currently being a deputy on the Alicante Provincial Council representing the Partido Popular. He is facing charges along with two Elche PP councillors, Justino Delgado and Luis Angel Mateo, over the granting of permission for the extended function of the kiosks in Santa Pola and also at El Carabasi beach in the Elche municipality. The fourth defendant is ex-Elche PSOE councillor, Emilio Domenech. Live concerts and music was pumped out into the early hours of the morning from the two kiosks as late as 5.00 am, especially at weekends, with complaints lodged by Carabasi residents at the time..

The four accused are said to have ignored advice and recommendations over the kiosks from the Valencian Government and the Valencian Ombudsman, and according to the charges, did nothing to stop the operators straying from their license conditions between 2008 and 2014. A lawyer on behalf of the residents, Roberto Batllés, said that rulings that the kiosks were operating illegally and causing major noise problems, were ignored by Zaragoza and the Elche councillors. He claims that they even got their respective authorities to carry out spot checks when they knew that there would be little noise.

Catalan Chaos

Catalunya will declare independence from Spain in a matter of days, the leader of the autonomous region has told the BBC. In his first interview since Sunday's unofficial referendum, Carles Puigdemont said his government would "act at the end of this week or the beginning of next". Meanwhile, King Felipe VI in a television address on Tuesday night said organisers of the vote put themselves "outside the law". He said the situation in Spain was "extremely serious", calling for unity. A general strike brought large areas of the region to a standstill on Tuesday, with the action called by regional trade unions and associations due to "the grave violation of rights and freedoms" seen during Sunday's ballot. 900 people were said to have been injured in clashes involving the police, but local health officials also admitted that over 30 police officers were also hurt.

Public schools, transport, and medical clinics were closed for the day, and even Barcelona’s footballers went on strike, though they had no match. Catalan officials said 90 percent of those who voted backed independence in Sunday's vote. The turnout was just over 42 percent. The anti-independence Societat Civil said there were voting irregularities, including the same people voting twice, whilst independent observers said that the results, given the chaotic nature of the poll, should be taken with a “pinch of salt”, with a number of opinion polls this year putting those who want independence at around 40 percent. In the BBC interview, President Carles Puigdemont said his government would move quickly over independence. When asked what he would do if the Spanish government were to intervene and take control of

Catalunya’s government, Mr Puigdemont said it would be "an error which changes everything". He disagreed with the European Commission's statement on Monday that events in Catalonia were an internal issue for Spain. He was speaking shortly before the king's speech on Tuesday, In his televised address to the nation, the king said the Catalan leaders who organised the referendum showed their "disrespect to the powers of the state". "They have broken the democratic principles of the rule of law. "Today, the Catalan society is fractured," the king said, warning that the poll could put at risk the economy of the wealthy northeastern region and the whole of Spain. But he stressed that Spain "will overcome difficult times". The central government has described the referendum as illegal.

Journey's End Two parts of Torrevieja are to get revamped street lighting thanks to a grant of almost 120 thousand euro from the Alicante Provincial Council. 63 thousand euro is to be spent upgrading the lights on Avenida Delfina Viudes, whilst 57 thousand euros

has been allocated to improvements in the Plaza del Molino area (pictured). Last week the Provincial Council announced that it had budgeted over a million euros to fund lighting projects next year in the La Mata and Barrio Acequión areas of the municipality.

A young driver lost control of his car in the Callosa de Segura area on Saturday and ended up hitting two parked cars outside the terrace of a bar, where fortunately nobody was sitting at the time. The incident happened just after 2.00 pm close to

the Callosa cemetery on the CV-900 which links Callosa and Redován, with witnesses saying that car jumped the traffic lights at speed before hitting a car that was already making a legal manoeuvre. The impact of that collision saw the car that

jumped the light then collide with some parked cars as as well as signs and plant pots outside the Avenida Bar. There were no injuries and the young motorist fled on foot, before being tracked down and arrested by the Redován local police.

Getting Removed Torrevieja council says it will cost up to 148 thousand euro to remove an illegally built roundabout on one of the key roads in the city. The roundabout was built a decade ago by a builder next to the Las Lagunas college on Avenida de las Cortes Valencianas, and as reported previously by The Courier, the council was deemed liable for it by a judge in August because it allowed it to be built in the first place. That's despite a different political grouping, namely the Partido Popular, being in charge of the authority at the time. Councillor Fanny Serrano

said three companies will considered for removal work and described the roundabout as dangerous

to road users and should not have been built, as it did not conform to safety guidelines.

Downward Trend

Unemployment figures are continuing to fall in Spain, with the latest returns for September showing a drop of 8.3% over the last year. The September figure stood at three point four million, an expected seasonal

rise of nearly 28,000, compared to August, but still the best for September in eight years, as the underlying trend is in a downward direction. Local statistics are even better than the national picture, with Alicante Provice showing an annual fall of

8.6%, with the September total standing at over 155,000. The returns are even more dramatic in the Murcia region, with a jobless fall of almost ten percent over a year, with the latest figures for September on 108,000.

Mayor Fights Back

Orihuela mayor Emilio Bascuñana is threatening legal action citing slander and libel over allegations that he snooped on a fellow councillor's mobile phone via WhatsApp and accessed private messages. That came after he survived a no-confidence vote over the matter in a special plenary session of the council. Partido Popular councillor and Orihuela PP president Dámaso Aparicio made the allegations in public over two months ago, when he claimed that Bascuñana was getting private details that could only have been enabled by phone hacking and that it could have happened on five occasions. Bascuñana (pictured at last Thursday's plenary meeting)has angrily denied the accusations stating that he hasn't been accessing material on Aparico's phone and nobody else has been doing it either on his behalf.

Aparicio informed the Valencian regional section of the Partido Popular of his concerns earlier in the year, but Bascuñana added:- "If Mr.Aparicio suspects that his phone is being tapped, then surely the police and courts should be notified. I don't understand why he doesn't do it?". The mayor said that he's been quiet over the allegations that have been appearing in the media in recent months, but he has instructed his lawyers to study some of the public comments that have been made. Aparicio was re-elected as the Orihuela PP president back in July, and lost his sport portfolio on the authority in June in a cabinet reshuffle, which saw him take on markets, in addition to his existing responsibilities concerning urban waste. Along with education councillor Begoña Cuartero,

Aparicio missed a vote of no-confidence debate in Bascuñana that was held at Orihuela council last week at the instigation of the opposition socialist PSOE, using the hacking allegations as the main issue. Aparicio said that he was pursuing the matter with the PP and told the Informacion newspaper that “his absence from the debate was consistent with the steps he had taken and that the council chamber was not the forum to discuss the issue”. Cuartero, who is a witness for Aparicio concerning the allegations, told Informacion that she had been suffering with migraine for a number of days and that she had to go to hospital. The vote ended as a tie with the PP and Ciudadanos coalition voting against, whilst the PSOE and Cambiemos Orihuela voted for. That meant that the motion was lost.

Testing Strikes

A stalemate that has prevented Pilar de la Horadada council approving a budget has been broken with the news that the Vecinos por el Pilar councillor Francisco Albaladejo (pictured right alongside mayor Ignacio Ramos on Monday, with

council spokesman Alfonso Armenteros on the left) has joined the socialist PSOEled administration. The move will give the new coalition an overall majority over the opposition Partido Popular. Albaladejo will assume a

variety of portfolios including infrastructure, housing and animal protection, and his move will enable projects to go forward like the completion of the infamous La Paloma cultural centre, as featured in The Courier previously.

Murcia’s ITV car testing stations were hit on Monday by the first of a series of one day strikes called by unions against the regional parliament’s decision to impose national rules on ITV stations, which the unions claim is backdoor privatisation. The parliament overturned the Murcia government’s more radical proposals, but that has still left the unions unhappy and they’ve announced a raft of nine strike dates for October at

centres like San Pedro del Pinatar, which include

Monday and Friday of next week.

Parade Posturings Orihuela’s tourism councillor Sofía Álvarez has been slammed by an opposition politician over the late cancellation of last Saturday’s Moors and Christians parade scheduled for Aquamarina in Cabo Roig, adding that it was another snub against the Orihuela Costa. The socialist PSOE councillor María García (pictured) has called on Álvarez to apologise after what she claims has been the third incident involving the Orihuela tourist department and the Moors and Christians Association in two years. That included the late cancellation of an Association costume exhibition at Cabo Roig last year, and the Association being unable to stage a parade at a travel fair in 2015, because of a lack of promised transportation. Media outlets were informed in the middle of last

Friday afternoon by Orihuela council that last Saturday’s event had been scrapped “due to circumstances beyond their control”, with no reason stipulated. The Orihuela Costa parade had been heavily promoted by the authority as part of the muncipality’s World Tourism Day celebrations.

It emerged over the weekend that the council had scrapped the event because there were no musicians, with the Moors and Christians Association claiming that the cancellation was down to Orihuela’s tourism department, and that they were all ready to go ahead.

Knife Giveaway A 41-year-old Spaniard is behind bars after trying to rob a man who was using an ATM machine at a Torrevieja bank, with a knife ending up as key factor in his arrest. The incident happened in July, but the details have only just been released by the Guardia Civil, with the individual using a pair of underpants as mask and a knife to threaten his victim. The unamed assailant has a criminal history and threatened a 30-year-old man with a large kitchen knife prodded into his back when he was withdrawing cash from a bank at the junction of Calle Azorín and Paseo Vista Alegre in the early hours of July 12th. The whole incident was recorded on CCTV with the victim then grabbed by the neck and the knife held to his throat. He ran away with the man’s cash, and then the following day was detained for threatening his father with

Theatrical Farce

In a piece of pure theatre, Torrevieja mayor José Manuel Dolón (picture from the Información newspaper) has put up posters in windows of the city’s Teatro Municipal explaining why it has not reopened, over two years since the council shut it down for essential safety work. The authority says it is considering legal action against the original architect Antonio Marquerie, who is said to be refusing to put his signature after the completion of the work. In June, the Mayor showed a certificate issued by the Organismo de Control

Autorizado that said that all safety problems had been dealt with, but a final work certification still needed to be signed to get an operating license. That document, under law, has to be signed-off by the building’s architect, Marquerie, however, he was said at the time by Dolón to be “uncooperative”. The Mayor subsequently suggested that an attempt to get another architect to “signoff” could take place, but it seems that, that move appears to have floundered, with Dolón now putting up posters explaining the impasse.

the same knife, which Guardia officers matched up as being identical to the ATM

robbery via the bank video footage that was recorded on CCTV.

Two hundred thousand euro of improvements are being carried out to the Teatro Capitol in Rojales. The work will include installing a new security and safety system, and a new stage surface. A stand-by generator is also being installed because of public safety concerns over would happen if there was a power cut during a show, along with lighting and acoustic enhancements. Rojales councillor for culture, Inmaculada Chazarra, said that the work was needed to upgrade facilties at the theatre that were long obsolete.

Missing Motion

The national parliament in Madrid has voted for a motion demanding that the Public Works ministry find the money to finish off the “missing” stretch of the RM1 road in the Murcia region. All the indications towards the start of last year were that work would begin this year with the national gov-

ernment funding the project and advertising for contractors, but nothing has happened. The money ran out suddenly during the recession in 2010, stopping the direct link between San Javier and the A7 Murcia to Alicante highway, with the road, nicknamed the “Highway of the

Bed”, terminating abruptly before some lemon groves at Zeneta. 11 kilometres of the highway need completing, with estimates two years ago that 112 million euro is needed to finish off the project, with some 30 million of it set to be claimed from the European Union.

Smoother Alhambra

Trips to Granada's Alhambra Palace should be queue-free in future, with the ticket-booking system having been overhauled to cut delays for visitors to the attraction in the Andalucian city. Visitors to one of the country’s biggest tourist

attractions can now book between two hours and three months before their tour and even print off their tickets at home. Those who wish to print their tickets but do not have access to a printer at home can do so in special booths set up at the entrance to the

Alhambra. But tickets will still be available for purchase at the entrance as always, for those who do not have internet access. Payment by credit or debit card is now being accepted, and, of course, visitors can still pay in cash.

Crooks Together

The Guardia Civil have arrested four Spaniards at the A-7 service area in Granja de Rocamora who were members of what they described as a dangerous criminal gang that kidnapped a businessman, after he had tried to rip them off. The 58-year-old Alicante-based businessman has also been detained by the Guardia. The businessman was bundled into a car in the San Isidro area, and taken down to Benalmádena in the Malaga Province, where his

office and safe was located. He managed to escape in Benalmádena and returned north and was treated for injuries at Alicante General Hospital a day later. The 58year-old told authorities that he knew nothing about his kidnappers and suggested that they were after his safe. The businessman and the “kidnappers” were allegedly involved in scams involving the sale of high-end cars and commercial properties, with the gang leader based in Molina de Segura in the Murcia region.

One Hour Waste

Seven members of the Salvemos Lo Ferrís group took part in a symbolic clean-up operation at Cala Ferris in Torrevieja on Sunday, and retrieved over 20 kilos of rubbish from the water in just an hour (picture from Objectivo Torrevieja) . Over half of the trash was

Imprisoned Slave

A young woman forced into prostitution in Valencia City told the National Police that she was held at a disused warehouse, with officers subsequently arresting nine people of Romanian and Polish nationality who were squatting in the building. Two of those detained were women, with four of the group having criminal

records. The authorities moved into action after the young woman escaped from the building where she was held captive, and made contact with the police at Valencia bus station. She said that a man had tricked her at the bus station a few days earlier to go to the warehouse, and once there, she was assaulted

and raped, in addition to being held captive. He also pimped her out for sex. The nine arrests also include a number of people who had been squatting at the deserted unit, and who all are considered as accomplices under Spanish law, as they were aware of what was going on, but did absolutely nothing to help the woman.

Busy Sunday

One hundred and eighteen people were brought ashore in the Mar Menor and Cartagena areas on Sunday, having made dangerous boat journeys from North Afrrica. Two of the boats were

spotted off Cabo de Palos at around 10.00 am on Sunday and were towed in to Cartagena port by a maritime rescue vessel. 31 children, including two babies, were amongst those attended to by the Cruz

Roja, ahead of being taken into custody by the authorities. Further north, seven migrants were taken ashore, also on Sunday, after being spotted in the waters off Santa Pola.

Over 20 exhibitors took part in Guardamar's fourth trade, outlet, and leisure fair last weekend, which was based in the Plaza de la Constitución. Craft demonstrations as well as stands from charities like the AECC cancer charity were part of the event, which also featured the usual quota of food tasting, which caught the eye of Guardamar mayor José Luis Sáez on the opening day.

BEAT THE %%%% BANK

By Richard Samuels, International Financial Adviser, Blacktower Financial Management In today’s financial climate, it can be difficult to decide how to invest your money. Since the banking crisis in 2007, interest rates have hit a record low. The Bank of England last year cut rates by a quarter point to 0.25% to stimulate the economy following the controversial Brexit vote – making it the first rate move since 2009.It now looks like interest rates are set for a modest increase later in the year.

In a nutshell, you can achieve better returns by taking advantage of a bond to invest your money in mutual funds for the medium to long term – which is likely to get better returns in comparison to current saver rates from the banks. If you would like more information on the above or if you would like advice on any of the issues you can contact me on richard.samuels@blacktowerfm.com.

However, with inflation at 2.9% (CPI August 2017) savings in fixed rate bank deposits are still likely to be eroded in real terms. Easy-access rates have now fallen so low that you cannot beat inflation with one, while some high street banks are offering just 0.01 per cent for your cash, making a paltry £1 for every £10,000 saved. As your savings can’t keep up with inflation your ‘buying power’ will decrease over time. For example, £10,000 on deposit with 0% interest will effectively decrease in real terms to £7,450 in ten years with the current rate of inflation.

To achieve a higher rate of growth than inflation investors need to consider other asset classes such as stocks and shares, or property. Most people are already in invested in property by owning their own home and I believe that property should form a part of everyone’s investment portfolio. Building a well-balanced, diversified portfolio may prove to be one the best protections against capital loss. However, property is not a liquid asset, meaning that it is not always possible to realise capital when required depending on the prevailing market. Mutual Funds or collective investments offer access to markets for the typical investor which give inflation beating returns. These can be very tax efficient and offer liquidity. Investments are generally held in a “wrapper” such as an ISA for example which offers tax free growth and tax-free withdrawals. For Expats here in Spain, although you can keep existing ISA’s, you are not allowed to open new ones or add to existing

ones as a non-UK tax resident. The good news is, expat investors can take advantage of a similar wrapper known as a Spanish Compliant Bond. Funds are held in Sterling or Euros outside of Spain. They offer “gross roll up” i.e.Tax-free growth, and you are only taxed on the profit element of any withdrawal. So, for example if your investment had made a 5% profit you are only taxed on 5% of any withdrawal. With current rates of savings tax in Spain at around 20% this means you would effectively pay 1% income tax in this example (20% x 5% = 1%). Spanish Compliant Bonds are available from major international financial institutions via regulated advisors such as Blacktower and allow for a combination of Mutual Funds, Stocks and Shares, Cash to be held in them. It is also worth noting that Mutual Funds, also add better protection because they can be diversified across multiple sectors (including real estate). They are pooled investments which means that individual investors have access to markets that would be otherwise prohibitive. I.e. you can benefit from the buying power of the institutions.

Most people are aware of the existence of zoonoses - those few diseases that pets can pass onto people: examples include rabies, ringworm, But what about the opposite scenario: so-called “reverse zoonoses” which are diseases that humans can pass on to pets? Reverse zoonoses are rare, but they do occur, according to vet Pete Wedderburn, who appears on many British tv and radio programmes, as well as writing for the Daily Telegraph. So what sort of diseases should owners be aware of, so that they can protect their pets from their owners’ maladies? Ringworm, or dermatophytosis, is an infection of the skin affecting humans as well as animals. If you develop suspicious skin lesions, avoid close contact with your pets until your doctor has ruled out ringworm. And if your pet - dog or cat - has signs of skin disease, avoid close contact until you have confirmed with your vet that ringworm is unlikely to be the cause. Ringworm is perhaps the most common two-way human-animal infectious disease. Studies have suggested that exposure - and reaction - to human flu viruses is more common in pets than previously suspected. To be safe, if you are suffering from signs that may be genuine flu, it makes sense to avoid close contact with the family pet. Most cases of Salmonella are linked to food poisoning, but

MARY Mary was brought into the SAT kennels, and was a little nervous as she had always been in a home environment and not used to kennel life. She soon settled down and has become a happy, lively girl. Mary weighs around 11.4 kilos and loves to have a run around, is very affectionate, gets on well with the other dogs and walks well on the lead. For more about Mary please call the SAT kennels on 966 710 047 or emailinfo@satanimalrescue.com

humans can also pick up this bacterial infection via contact with infected animals, and equally, animals can be infected by humans carrying the disease. Dogs and cats are more resistant to Salmonella than humans, but the risk should not be ignored. Giardia infection, or giardiasis, is spread via drinking water, including wells, lakes and streams. The condition can infect dogs, cats, and humans, and can spread from one to the other. The main sign is diarrhoea, so if you are afflicted with this, pay particular attention to hygiene between yourself and your pet in case Giardia is the cause. Strictly speaking, tobacco smoke inhalation is not a disease, and so cannot be transmitted from people to pets. However, inhaling smoke does cause a wide range of diseases, including cancer, cell damage and weight gain. If pets are “passive smokers” in a home where humans actively smoke, they are more likely to suffer from the consequences. If you want to protect the health of your pets, stop smoking, or at least, stop smoking in the same indoor areas as your pets. Pets and humans are generally good for each other, but it’s always wise to take steps to protect the health of your furry companions. So wash your hands before and after feeding, petting, and toiletting. Don’t share your bed with your pet and don’t let them lick your face.

PERRY Perry is a beautiful galgo dog who is a recent arrival at the Los Infiernos Perrera in San Javier. He's large but very friendly and gets on well with the other dogs at the kennels. If you would like to meet Perry and to give him a forever home, then please email losinfirernosdogs@hotmail.com or check out the Facebook page Los Infiernos Perrera Supporters. Two major holidays are commemorated next week, but only one if you live in the Murcia region. Valencia Day falls this Monday October 9th, and is classified as a premium red day holiday across the Valencia region, whilst the Fiesta de la Hispanidad is

landed in the Americas in 1492. October 12th is also the country’s Armed Forces Day, with King Felipe presiding over a military parade in Madrid, which will also feature a display by the San Javier-based aerobatics team, the Patrulla Aguila.

The latest blaze came in the zone between the mouth of the River Segura and a line of properties at Playa Babilonia. Two helicopters, a sea plane, and fire crews from Almoradi and

Torrevieja were deployed to deal with the fire shortly after 5.00 pm, with the blaze being contained as the firefighters worked throughout the night to make sure it was completely extinguished.

Painted Insults

A man who painted offensive slogans against Orihuela council and the local police on two buildings in Orihuela City has been arrested by authorities. The poorly spelt insults were daubed on municipal buildings on Calle Arriba used by the Disabled Day Care Association and the Citizen Participation Centre. No details about the offender have been released by the police, or how much it will cost to clean up the walls, but council workers were hard at it removing the slogans last weekend.

Ramped Up

A new elevated pedestrian crossing has been installed in Dolores on the Elche main road, paid for by

the Valencian government. The Mayor of the Vega Baja village, José Joaquín Hernández, said that the

crossing was badly needed in the town to help avoid an accident that might kill a child.

Ramped Up

A new water pumping station for San Fulgencio has been officially opened, which will enable all of the municipality’s green areas to use recycled water from the EDAR sewage treatment plant. The plant produces 800 thousand cubic metres of water a year which had been pumped into the sea, but San Fulgencio

council and the Hidraqua water company set up a joint initiative to reuse the water instead in the area’s green areas. A council spokesman said that recycled as opposed to drinking water would be used for green areas, making the muncipality more “envionmentally sustainable”. This initiative is useful as reservoir levels are low.

Hi Kath, the file history drive is an external USB drive or stick that is used as a backup to save copies of your files so that you can get them back if they are lost or damaged, you can access all of the settings relating to this feature within Windows by using the control panel and navigating to system and security and then to file history.

Hi Lisa, it sounds like you’re using the Microsoft Outlook email client and that you have the folders set not to order alphabetically, luckily you can easily change this. What you need to do is right hand click the folder that you would like to order and select “Sort Subfolders A to Z”.

Salted Caramel & Peanut Butter Billionaire’s Slice Ingredients For the base 225g butter, chopped into cubes, plus a little for greasing 140g unsalted peanut, toasted and cooled 225g plain flour 50g cornflour 85g golden caster sugar For the peanut butter layer 140g butter 225g smooth peanut butter 140g icing sugar For the salted caramel layer 2 X 397g cans Carnation caramel 1½ tsp flaky sea salt or ½ tsp fine sea salt For the chocolate-toffee topping 3 x 100g bars dark chocolate, broken into small pieces 140g soft dairy toffee 3 tbsp milk ½ tsp flaky sea salt Method Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Grease and line a 20 x 30cm rec-

tangular cake tin with baking parchment – the best way to do this is with 2 long strips of parchment. Put the ingredients for the base in a food processor and blitz until it starts to clump together – don’t worry if the peanuts are still a little chunky, they will add a lovely texture. Tip onto your work surface and knead briefly to bring together as a dough. Press the dough into the base of your tin in an even layer. Bake for 25 mins until golden, then set aside to cool. To make the peanut butter layer, melt the butter and peanut butter in a small pan and mix until smooth. Sieve the icing sugar into a bowl, then pour in the hot butter mixture and stir to combine. While the mixture is still warm, pour over the base and smooth out with a spatula. Chill for 2 hrs until set. To make the caramel layer, put the caramel and salt in a pan, bring up to the boil and simmer vigorously for 2-3 mins, whisking continuously, until the colour darkens a shade or two and the caramel thickens slightly. Leave the caramel to cool for 20

mins (see tips, below). Once cooled, pour it over the peanut butter layer and return to the fridge for a further 2 hrs. Melt the chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of barely simmering water. Meanwhile, put the toffees and the milk in a small saucepan and gently heat. They will clump together and struggle to melt at first, but keep heating and eventually they will turn into a runny toffee sauce. Remove the tin from the fridge and pour the chocolate over the salted caramel layer, tipping the tin to spread the chocolate over the surface. Use a spoon to quickly drizzle the caramel over the chocolate in a thin loopy pattern (or see tip, below). If the toffee starts to get too thick, add a splash more milk or cream and pop it back on the heat until runny. Sprinkle over the sea salt flakes and put the tin back in the fridge to chill for 2 hrs before slicing. Prep: 45 Mins Cook: 55 Mins Serves: 15 Slices

Can even moderate drinking increase the risk of cancer? Alcohol may be a social lubricant but WHO and Public Health England say it can cause cancer. Last week the alcohol industry was accused of downplaying the link between alcohol and the increased risk of seven cancers: mouth, throat, oesophagus, liver, breast and colon. A research paper in Drug and Alcohol Review found that “responsible drinking” information funded by the alcohol industry tends to push the message that only heavy drinking increases the risk of these cancers. But the paper says the risk starts with low levels of drinking, even though the risk itself is low. So is the recommended number of alcohol units a week – 14 – too high?

women might still be positive,” he says. “For colorectal cancer, the risk for men and women is low until you reach more than two drinks per day.” There are also individual genetic differences in metabolising alcohol that can increase the risk of cancer. Ethanol in alcoholic drinks is broken down into acetaldehyde, which is toxic to cells, damaging DNA and proteins. Some people have genetic variations that are less effective at getting rid of acetaldehyde, and they may have a higher risk of oesophageal cancer.

The solution Even less than 1.5 units a day – a small glass of wine – can increase the risk of mouth, throat, oesophagus and breast cancer (in women), according to a UK government committee. While the toll of heavy drinking on the liver and pancreas is well known, the link

to cancers, especially breast and colorectal, is less so. There are more than 100 epidemiology studies showing an association between breast cancer and alcohol, the risk increasing with less than one daily glass of wine.

Research at Harvard found that while light to moderate drinking was not significantly associated with an increased risk for men (unless they smoked), it did increase the risk of breast cancer for women.

Edward L Giovannucci, professor of nutrition and epidemiology at Harvard School of Public Health and the lead author of the report, says that the increase in risk is modest. And there are some health benefits from

occasional drinking that make the true risk to health harder to quantify. He points out other research that shows that one drink per day reduces the risk of diabetes for women. “So the overall effect on health for

Giovannucci says that overall he wouldn’t recommend drinking alcohol to improve your health. “But if one enjoys a glass or occasionally two a day as part of a healthy diet, and doesn’t smoke, I think the increased risk of cancer is small,” he says. “For those with a family history of colorectal or breast cancer, I’d suggest not drinking or not exceeding one glass per day.”

Why Is Wheat Toxic? For thousands of years, people have cultivated wheat as food. Wheat is primarily a grass. In many cultures, wheat serves as a staple food, and like every staple food, it provides food in the absence of better quality foods. Wheat has never been a particularly healthy food in human society due to the toxins it contains typically found in grasses. Nevertheless, wheat had been reasonably tolerated by people until the mid1970s when it was genetically modified and became transformed into a brandnew plant species. This wheat from the mid1970s is the commercially available form of wheat found all over the world. It is

used to make bread, pasta, sausages, pastries, pies, cakes, biscuits, snacks, sauces and many other processed foods. This genetically modified form of wheat contains far higher concentrations of toxins than the original wheat called Spelt wheat. Wheat is widely known to contain Gluten, the protein responsible for the glue-like quality of wheat. Gluten damages the finger-like processes in the walls of the intestines responsible for absorbing nutrients, which leads to diseases such Coeliac. But gluten, however, is not even the most toxic compound found in wheat. Wheat contains a highly toxic substance called Lectins which studies

show have a strong link to chronic diseases. Lectins are indigestible compounds that accumu-

late in the organs such as the stomach, intestines, and pancreas to cause diseases in these organs.

Other chronic diseases linked to Lectins include Rheumatoid Arthritis, Diabetes, Fibromyalgia, Crohn's, Multiple Sclerosis and Cancer. Another toxin found in Wheat is Wheat Germ agglutinin (WGA). This toxic compound also damages the intestinal villi responsible for absorbing nutrients, resulting in nutrient deficiencies and chronic diseases. A study published in the British Journal of Cancer showed a strong link between wheat germ agglutinin and Cancer of the pancreas. Most people will tolerate some of the toxins found in natural Wheat or Spelt Wheat. But the genetically modified commercial wheat

contains many times more toxins and more people today suffer from abdominal problems resulting from these toxins. These problems may start off as mild symptoms like abdominal distension and cramps and gradually progress into stomach pain, diarrhoea, constipation and food intolerances. People with recurrent abdominal problems such as abdominal pain, should eliminate wheat from their diet and replace with the alternatives to wheat such as Rye and Spelt.

Bedbugs thought to 'hitchhike' on dirty holiday laundry "Dirty laundry a powerful magnet for bedbugs, study finds," is a recent claim. Bedbugs are small blood-sucking insects that live in cracks and crevices in and around beds. They crawl out at night and bite exposed skin to feed on blood. The number of bedbugs has soared across the globe recently, with cheap air flights believed to play a role in their spread. But until now, it hasn't been clear how or why these tiny wingless bugs manage to travel great distances.

The authors of this latest study now think they have the answer: dirty laundry left lying around in hotel rooms, regardless of the presence of a human host. In experiments done on identical rooms, researchers found bedbugs were most likely to collect in bags containing dirty clothes than in bags of clean laundry. The researchers propose that traces of body odour on dirty laundry are enough to attract the critters – the presence of humans isn't necessary. Once in the laundry bag, the

insects can travel in a person's luggage back home and then hide under mattresses, in headboards, or along carpet edges. The researchers suggest a simple way of protecting yourself against the unwelcome hitchhikers: keep dirty laundry in sealed bags. This was a small experimental study with limitations. But as bedbug infestations are so tricky to treat, prevention is key – and it makes sense to try this simple measure the next time you're travelling.

COME AND JOIN US! It’s the perfect time to consider joining Find A Spanish Property as a property associate, as property prices are on the rise, and the market is blossoming. 2016 was a positive year for the real estate market with prices having bottomed out the year before with modest price rises. Things have really kicked in during 2017, in strong contrast to the recession period that kicked in during 2008 and 2009. Official government figures confirm that prices are rising this year, and outside the cities of Madrid and Barcelona, Alicante Province which features the Costa Blanca, and the Murcia region with the Costa Calida tourist area, are two of the biggest areas on mainland Spain which are seeing substantial rises in demand along with price increases. The cranes are back with new homes being built by the coast, and the re-sale market continues to rise, fuelled by low interest rates in Spain. Statistics show that demand for homes from British buyers is still high, despite pessimistic fears last year over the Brexit factor, coupled with purchasers from across Europe, and even further afield. Recent surveys show that the majority of British people living in Spain are aged 65 and over, and website statistics confirm that older British nationals with no mortgage on their UK property are still very much looking at Spain as their area of choice to buy a holiday home, or even somewhere to retire to. It’s a great time to get involved in becoming a seller of real-estate in Spain, especially since most of the cowboys disappeared thanks to the recession nearly a decade ago. We like to think that we’ve played our own small part in helping to seeing them off, by offering an honest business that people are proud to recommend and that we now want to substantially expand.

Getting Started We will remove the pain and hassle of starting up your own estate agency by setting the all-important website that will market your business. TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

Should there be another series of Doctor Foster after an exciting finale to the second season on Tuesday night on BBC 1 that left some big unanswered questions? My heart rules my head and suggests that there is plenty of mileage left here for a return in a couple of years time, especially after teenage Tom made his views clear about what he thought about his parents, and ran away from them. It was all nuts as we wondered whether Simon would take his own life, but gripping nevertheless. Tellingly there was no continuity announcement over the closing credits that Doctor Foster would return, but on Wednesday, creator and writer Mike Bartlett said that “there were conversations to be had”, and that Suranne Jones would be pivotal as to whether there is a third series. One way or another, thanks to everybody for the crazy ride, and if we get another shot at it in 2019, then all well and good. Jessica Raine made a

Foster’s Open Finale

Sunday night TV name for herself as one of the first new faces to become well known thanks to Call The Midwife. I wonder what her Nonnatus House mates in Poplar would make of her Sunday return playing an alcoholic bed-hopping wife of a British military police officer in mid-sixties Aden? Sex and foul language abound in her scenes in The Last Post (BBC 1), which is set a few months before the Brits are sent packing with a flea in their ear from the colony on the Arabian pennisula. It’s very hot there in this interesting tale of a new(and far too good-looking) captain being brought in to join the military police team, with his new wife in tow. I’ll leave it there, but if I tell you that Peter Moffat, the writer of legal dramas Silk and Criminal Justice, is behind this, then there is plenty of intrigue to get your teeth into, as the local rebels plot attacks against the occupying Brits. The new network US TV season continues to unfold, and here’s news of a show that comes form the Marvel

Comics stable, The Gifted, which is running on FOX UK, as well as many other outlets. A whole raft of Marvel shows have appeared on streaming services in the last couple of years, and I have to say that a lot appear to lack humour and good plotting, but The Gifted is miles better. This, like the very different Legion from earlier in the year, is an X-Men spin-off, with mutants being chased around by the authorities. Stephen Moyer, having picked up some pocket money for ITV’s dreadful Safe House, looks miles more comfortable in this, as he plays a prosecutor who runs cases against mutants, and discovers that his two kids are mutants themseles. You really do care what happens when you watch the opener unfold, with great special effects, and the odd bit of humour thrown in, plus the regular cameo appearance from Marvel creator, Stan Lee. This is just good entertainment, which is after all what the Marvel TV shows should be about, in the vein of

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter, as opposed to recent disappointments like The Defenders (on Netflix) or Inhumans (set for Sky One, and regarded as the “dud” of the year). Mr.Selfridge is back with Jeremy Piven now playing a much-more likeable genius tech innovator in the mold of Bill Gates and Steve Jobs who creates a cutting-edge

crowdsourcing app to solve his daughter’s murder. The show, airing on CBS in the States, is called Wisdom of the Crowd, and has a smell of Person of Interest and CSI about it. It does have some interesting things to say about the use of technology and almost a very uncomfortable sort of vigilantism. There was a scene in the opener where a crowd

of app-users surrounded the baddie as he got off a train, and I went, “what the heck?!”. That concept really got some critics worried after Sunday’s premiere, but I’m sure Wisdom will address that issue in a perfectly passable hour that does try to be different, and is clearly aimed at a younger audience. Count me in for more!

David and Shona look on, horrified. David and Shona frantically bang on the car as Dane sits inside with a traumatised Max and Lily.

Later, emboldened by alcohol, Rana calls at Kate’s flat and kisses her passionately. Kate is stunned.

Meanwhile, Max offers to stay with Jane while Ian is busy on the Square.

A Very English Scandal

Filming on Russell T Davies' major three-part drama for BBC One A Very English Scandal has begun. Hugh Grant as Jeremy Thorpe and Ben Whishaw as Norman Scott will be joined by Alex Jennings, Patricia Hodge, Monica Dolan, Adrian Scarborough and Jason Watkins, with Eve Myles, Michele Dotrice and Blake Harrison. A Very English Scandal is the shocking true story of the first British politician to stand trial for conspiracy and incitement to murder. Hugh Grant is to return to British television screens for the first time since the early 1990s as the disgraced MP Jeremy Thorpe, who in 1979 was tried but acquitted of conspiring to murder his exlover Norman Scott, played by Ben Whishaw. Further cast include Fisayo Akinade, David Bamber, Patrick Barlow, Lucy Briggs-

Owen, Paul Hilton, Jonathan Hyde, Alice Orr-Ewing, Steffan Rhodri, Paul Freeman and Susan Wooldridge. It is the late 1960s, homosexuality has only just been decriminalised and Jeremy Thorpe, the leader of the Liberal party and the youngest leader of any British political party in a hundred years, has a secret he's desperate to hide. As long as his ex-lover Norman Scott is around, Thorpe's brilliant career is at risk. Thorpe schemes and deceives - until he can see only one way to silence Scott for good. The trial of Jeremy Thorpe changed society forever, illuminating the darkest secrets of the Establishment. The Thorpe affair revealed such breathtaking deceit and corruption that, at the time, hardly anyone dared believe it could be true.

Celebrity line-up confirmed for ITV’s Gone To Pot

All aboard for the trip of a lifetime. The celebrity lineup for new ITV documentary series Gone to Pot has been unveiled and includes Birds of a Feather actress and Loose Women panelist Linda Robson, exEastEnders actress Pam St Clement, actor Christopher Biggins, retired footballer and TV presenter John Fashanu and darts supremo Bobby George. The group of well-known celebrities will be hitting the road together for a new three-part series, to embark on the ultimate trip across the US on board a magical mystery bus. They will explore the locals use of marijuana, for both medicinal and recreational purposes and meet some truly extraordinary characters along the way. Each of the personalities is motivated by a personal

desire to find out more about the issues involved and the series follows their journey of discovery. They travel to states where medicinal and recreational use has been legalised, meeting people who have experienced both the benefits and downsides of medical and recreational use. The issue of legislation has long been a subject of debate in the UK with marijuana having been reported to ease symptoms of arthritis, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis and several other conditions. However, it remains the most commonly used and trafficked illicit drug in the world and evidence suggests that frequent and prolonged use can be detrimental to both mental and physical health. Executive producer says: “The legalisation of marijuana is a hot topic in Britain.”

VAUXHALL EXPANDS AWARD-WINNING VAN RANGE • • •

New Corsavan Limited Edition NAV added to the Vauxhall model range New black graphic styling and 16-inch black alloy wheels exclusive to latest model Updated Navi 4.0 IntelliLink infotainment with seven-inch touchscreen

Luton – Vauxhall has expanded its popular Corsavan range with the addition of a new top-of-the-range Limited Edition NAV model. Available to order now, the new variant offers some of the latest technology and stylish exterior design features. The new Corsavan Limited Edition NAV model features unique exterior graphics, as well as black wing mirrors, 16-inch Black Alloy Wheels and a Carbon Flash grille bar. The stylish new black accents have been designed to complement the Corsavan’s full range of exterior colours (excluding Royal Blue and Metallic Black). The new model also marks the introduction of the Persian Blue exterior colour, which is offered exclusively on the Limited Edition NAV. As well as a new look exterior, the new model trim will add Navi 4.0 IntelliLink connectivity to an already impressive list of standard technology. The updated system has a seven-inch colour touchscreen for easy navigation, with features including RDS with Traffic Programme, Eco Routing, DAB digital radio, and sat nav with European coverage. The unit’s smartphone integration is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and enables USB connection, Bluetooth connectivity and A2DP audio streaming. “This stylish new Corsavan will appeal to operators who want a small car-derived van that stands out from the crowd,” said Steve Bryant, Vauxhall’s Head of Commercial Vehicle Brand. “It’s exceptionally well-equipped for its size, with features including Navi 4.0 IntelliLink connectivity with a seven-inch touchscreen.”

DATES ADDED TO MOTORCYCLE INDUSTRY TRY OUT PROGRAMME Sessions can be booked beforehand by phoning 02746 408040, or via the website www.geton.co.uk or people can turn up and book on the day (subject to availability). Under 16s must bring an adult or guardian.

More people in London and the North West will get the chance to try a motorcycle or scooter for free this month, with the addition of two weekend-long events to the Get On diary. St Helens in Merseyside (14th/15th October) and Erith in South East London (28th/29th October) have both been chosen for a third Get On visit, due to popular demand. Get On is the motorcycle industry’s free ‘try out’ programme and offers free 45-minute taster sessions with a professional instructor at venues across the UK. All bikes and protective clothing are provided. This will be the third time the Get On team has delivered free taster sessions to people in Erith and St Helens and both events will be held at the town’s driving test centres, which are empty at weekends, so ideal spaces for Get On. Karen Cole, Director of Safety and Training for the Motorcycle Industry Association, which backs Get On events, says this is an ideal introduction to motorcycling: “If you’ve never tried a motorcycle or scooter, but always wondered what it is like, this

is your opportunity to do.” “Whether you are looking for a way of saving time on your journey to work by avoiding traffic queues, or you long for a David Beckham style off-road adventure, Get On will help you discover if motorcycling or scootering is for you, in a safe and structured environment. Dunne And Dusted

Paul Dunne held his nerve to survive a late surge from Rory McIlroy in the British Masters at Close House on Sunday. The Irishman birdied the last two holes to win by three shots and claim a maiden European Tour victory. On a day of low scoring at the North-East England course, Rory McIlroy made a run at the title with five birdies in his last six holes. He closed with a 63 and posted a clubhouse total of 17-under-par. At that stage Dunne had a two-shot lead with two holes to play. He made a birdie at the 17th to increase the cushion to two over McIlroy with just the par-3 last to play and he then sealed the tournament victory with a chip-in from off the last green. Dunne closed with a sensational 61 to finish on 20-under-par, with McIlroy in solo second. Forty-eight-year-old Robert Karlsson carded a closing 66 to end the week in third with Florian Fritsch, David Lingmerth and local boy Graeme Storm tied for

Spring Trophies

Despite being into the autumn series of racing, the Sailing Association Mar Menor (SAMM) recently declared their results for the spring races and presented trophies to the winners. Over the seven completed races, John Down in his RS Quba ‘Lola’ was declared the winner, with the the Sailfish 18 ‘Sirocco’, second. Sirocco had been sailed by different crews during the

season so the trophy was accepted by Julian Perring, pictured to the right of John Down. In third place was Mick Burgess in his Sea Hopper ‘Rosita’, which was the smallest boat in the fleet. The autumn series is in full swing now, and more details and information about SAMM is available from their website: www.sailingmarmenor.com.

fourth. It was a first European Tour win for Dunne who led the 2015 Open Championship through 54-holes when he was still an amateur. “It’s kind of a sense of relief to prove it to myself that I can get it done. I think I’ve improved a lot mentally over the last year in these kind of situations,” Dunne said, “I feel like I’ve got a bit tougher mentally and I get excited to go out and look at the leaderboard, rather than trying to look at position. I went out and really tried to win the tournament rather than have someone hand it to me. That was the focus.” “Once I was in front, just keep pushing, make no bogeys and see how many birdies I can make. Absolutely thrilled. Obviously the money is great. It means I don’t have to worry about getting a job where I have to sit behind a desk. But after all this, you know, I really love playing golf, and I’ve been grateful.”

Losing Finale Sandy Courts

Torrevieja Cricket Club (pictured) travelled down to La Manga last weekend for their last league game of the season, with the home side winning by six wickets, with plenty of overs to spare. Torrevieja won the toss and chose to bat first, as they made 148 for 7 off their 40 overs. It was slow early progress against some tight bowling, but then Torry began to increase the scoring rate. Opener Kieran Wood started to push the score along but wickets started to fall. Eventually Wood was out for 41 but this brought Paul Powall to the wicket and he continued to score at a fast rate until was bowled by Tom Vine for 42. Paul Brimble

with 3 for 31 and Hugh James taking 2 for 17 were the pick of the La Manga bowlers. The home side started their innings badly losing two early wickets, but David Williams came to the crease and made a match-winning innings, finishing on 59 not out. A quick 17 from Rupert James and 15 from Ramu Fletcher plus an embarrassing 47 extras from Torrevieja gave La Manga the win in the 35th over. Torrevieja have two friendly games against touring sides as they entertain Fenwick from Yorkshire tomorrow (Saturday) and Rainham from Essex the following week on Saturday October 15th.

Campoamor's La Glea beach will once again host the Spanish national beach tennis championships this weekend, with the event starting on Saturday morning at 9.00 am and will finish with the finals on Sunday. 64 people from 15 regions will be competing in the tenth staging of the tournament, with eight courts set to be used to accommodate the

88 matches that will be played over two days. The event is being used as an eliminator for the world championships with Orihuela Mayor Emilio Bascuñana inviting sports fans from around the area to catch the action this weekend, and to perhaps look at taking up beach tennis, as it was a sport that would improve fitness.

Clueless Torrevieja

CD TORREVIEJA 0 UD ILICITANA 0 Sunday’s match at the Vicente Garcia stadium was undoubtedly the most disappointing of the Preferente season so far, as coming on the back of an excellent win and performance at Orihuela, Torry toiled against the bottom side in the group, who earned their first point of the campaign. It was feeble fare for the home supporters, though at least it was a point that kept

Torry in the top slots on 11 points alongside Pinoso and Hercules B. The home banker produced the side’s worst football of the season in the first half, with all of the quality from previous matches abundantly missing. The half-time team talk normally does the trick but not in this case from coach Pedreno, who along with the frustrated supporters, saw Torry get even worse as the

strugglers actually produced some chances to score which keeper Buyo had to deal with. There was virtually nothing of any merit at the other end! If that’s Torry’s worst performance of the season truly dealt with, they have the new bottom side in the Preferente in their sights this weekend, as go to Monforte CF for a 5.30 pm kick-off this Sunday.

Another Defeat

CD THADER 1 FB REDOVAN 2 All the goals came in the first half at Rojales, as Thader’s surprisingly poor season continued as struggling visitors Redovan got their first win of the current Preferente campaign. Redovan rocked Thader

with two goals in the space of one first half minute (35 and 36 minutes) through Edu and Guille, with Rubén Sanz to getting one back, before May got onto the scoresheet in added time. That was it for the goals

as Thader through Rubén Sanz dominated the second half, but could not get back onto level terms. For Thader, and just one win to their name, they go to fourth-placed Jove Espanol tomorrow.

Monte’s First Point

ATLETICO CATRAL 3 CD MONTESINOS 3

Bragging Rights

CALLOSA 2 CD ALMORADI 0 Callosa claimed the local scalp of Almoradi in last weekend’s Preferente Group Four encounter, thanks to substitute Regueras scoring just after the interval, and Garci getting a late clincher, with just

a couple of minutes remaining. The first half was undistinguished, and then Regueras put Callosa in front, with things getting worse for the visitors when Angel was sent off in the 66th minute. That

actually spurred them on, but they could not get back onto level terms, and Callosa secured the points. Midtable Almoradi entertain Petrelense this Sunday morning, who are just below them in the standings.

After two straight defeats in their first two matches in the Valencia regional primera division, Montesinos at last opened up their account at Catral on Sunday. The good news came deep into added time thanks to a Vaz header that it went in off the cross bar to grab the first point of the season. Key players were still missing for Monte, but Vaz and Carlos Ventura had good chances to put the visitors in front. However, Catral began to

control more of the midfield, and it was no surprise that the home side scored on the stroke of half-time. Early in the second half, Monte manager Carlos Perez saw that changes were needed and he made a brave call to make a triple substitution with Macan, German and Fran Guirao coming on. In spite of this, straight away Catral doubled their advantage. Monte kept their heads up, and the midfield control missing in the first half went

Monte’s way through Macan and German, with Fran Guirao and then German levelling up the match. With minutes left, Catral got back in front with a free kick that got keeper Dani beat, and the fates seemed to be against Monte, before Vaz got them a deserved point right at the death. Monte return for a home match, which is being played tomorrow (Saturday) as opposed to the regular Sunday, as they entertain Hondon Nieves CF, with a 5.30 pm kick-off.

Isco’s Double

Sport

Early Exchange

REAL MADRID 2 ESPANYOL 0

BARCELONA 3 LAS PALMAS 0 Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde admitted his players struggled to concentrate as they beat Las Palmas at an empty Nou Camp amid Sunday's political unrest. The La Liga leaders hosted struggling Las Palmas behind closed doors after a request to have the game postponed due to local turmoil amid the Catalunya independence referendum was rejected. Sergio Busquets eventually broke the deadlock four minutes into the second half and Lionel Messi made victory certain with two typically well-taken finishes. Valverde said: "It was a weird and complicated situation for everyone and it wasn't possible to postpone the game.” "That is why we played behind closed doors, because it was a consensual decision of the club.” Barca’s next match after the international break is a trip to fourth-placed Atletico Madrid a week on Saturday.

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane claimed Isco was high on confidence and playing without fear after his matchwinning double against Espanyol. Isco scored both goals as champions Real finally secured their first home win of the season in La Liga at the fourth attempt on Sunday. Zidane feels Isco is growing in influence as he becomes more aware of his importance to the team. “He has more confidence. He knows now that he is important but he has always been.” "He plays the way he plays on the street - he has no worries and I like it. When things don't work out, he has patience.” "I hope we can see an even better Isco.” Real’s next match after the international break is on Saturday October 14th at Getafe.

ATL. SAGUNTINO 1 ELCHE 1 Elche maintained their second spot in Segunda division B, four points behind Mallorca, after last Saturday’s draw at Saguntino. Both goals came within the first three minutes, with poor Elche defending allowing Gámez to get the home opener in the first minute, but the Ilicitanos were back on level terms shortly afterwards, thanks to an excellent free kick strike from Edu Albacar. There was little quality in the first half, with the ball spending more time in the air, as opposed to on the grass. Sory had a couple of chances, and a Golobart header came close for Elche. Saguntino had the better chances in the second half, with Elche not really causing many concerns for the home defenders until late on when Iván Sánchez had a long shot saved, but Saguntino also pressed for a winner at the other end. Elche are back with a home fixture this Sunday, as they play ninth-placed Ontinyent, with a 5.00 pm kick-off.

Better Bale

Third Division News

In last weekend’s Valencia regional third division matches, Orihuela maintained their second spot in the table, after thrashing strugglers Recambios Colon four-nil, with Nico, Ivan, Antonio, and Ayo on target (action pictured above). Orihuela travel for a Saturday match at seventh-placed La Nucia tomorrow. Crevillente got a much need one-nil victory against Torre Levante, with Gomis getting the goal in the 69th minute, prompting major celebrations (see below). Crevillente are away to fellow mid-table side Paiporta tomorrow. Elche Ilicitano drew one-one with Novelda, and have a good chance to record a home win this Sunday lunchtime as they entertain Recambios Colon.

Elche Copa Dates

Real Madrid have confirmed that Gareth Bale's calf injury is not as serious as first feared and he has not torn a muscle. Bale is sitting out Wales' World Cup Qualifiers, having missed Real Madrid's win over Espanyol (see above) due to the muscle strain he suffered against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League. Tuesday. Real Madrid said that Bale has "swelling but no tear in the soleus muscle of his left leg" and that his "recovery will be monitored". He will be out of action for up to four weeks.

Asensio Deal Real Madrid forward Marco Asensio has signed a new sixyear contract with the La Liga champions. The 21-year-old Spain international, who joined Madrid from Mallorca in 2014, has committed to the club until June 2023. Last season Asensio enjoyed his most successful season to date, scoring in the final as Madrid added the Champions League to their La Liga title. So far this season he has scored four goals for the club.

Elche will be rubbing shoulders with the La Liga big boys again as the last 32 draw in the Copa del Rey has paired them with the Primera division’s fourth-place side Atletico Madrid. How much of a full-strength side Atletico will play is open to question with their La Liga and Champions League fixture list, but the first match in the two-legged tie will be at Elche on Wednesday October 25th. The return leg is pencilled in for Wednesday November 29th at Atletico’s new Wanda Metropolitano stadium, with both dates possibly subject to change depending on the demands of television companies.

Ex-Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho has been summoned to appear in a Madrid court next month over accusations of tax fraud, just 48 hours before Manchester United travel to Chelsea in the Premier League. In June this year, Mourinho was accused of defrauding Spain's Tax Office of over three million euros in 2011 and 2012 by state prosecutors. The money in question does not involve Mourinho's salary from when he coached Madrid between 2010 and 2013, but rather revenues from image rights. A judge has now summoned Mourinho to answer questions regarding the accusations in a Madrid court on November 3rd, just two days before United are due to travel to Stamford Bridge on November 5th.

Ronaldo Problems

Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo has been branded as “unbearable” by some of his colleagues at the club, according to reports being published across the Spanish media. The Portuguese striker has struggled so far this season, failing to score in his three La Liga appearances. And Diario Gol report sources from inside the Real dressing room have told them of their discontent with Ronaldo. Some players have apparently described being at the same club as the 32-year-old as ’a constant battle’. The reports claim new Real signing Dani Ceballos has been very surprised with the situation at the Bernabeu. Ronaldo is often seen remonstrating on the pitch if things aren’t going his way and that is said to have irked some Real players. Meanwhile last weekend’s double-scorer Isco (see opposite page) is said to have a grudge against Ronaldo, according to Diario Gol. Isco was snapped up from Malaga in 2013, but initially struggled to establish himself. The Spain international wanted to play on the left flank. But at the time Ronaldo played there and refused to accommodate his team-mate. Diario Gol say Isco hasn’t forgotten Ronaldo’s lack of cooperation as he tried to settle at the Bernabeu. Ronaldo now plays centrally in Real’s attack and Isco is deployed in his preferred role. He has now established himself as an integral first teamplayer and is well liked in the Real dressing room. Diario Gol reckon Isco has become the leader for a group of young Spanish players. Marco Asensio, Nacho, Dani Carvajal and Dani Ceballos all reportedly look up to him.

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has hit out at ‘liars’ claiming he does not get on with his Spain team-mate Sergio Ramos, revealing that the two in fact plan to go into business together. Pique and Ramos, the captains of Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively, have clashed numerous times in derby matches between the two clubs but have formed a formidable partnership in the heart of the Spanish national team’s defence. They have won the World Cup and two European Championships playing alongside one another, and Pique has defended their off the field relationship after some Spanish newspapers claimed they had fallen out over the Barcelona man’s commitment to Catalan independence. “Any talk that we don't get along is a big lie,” Pique said while on international duty this week.”We are even going to be partners in a business that I asked him to get involved with. “Everything is okay, my relationship with him is phenomenal. It is easy to say things but we are very close and there is no problem between us.” Pique, who was jeered during an open training session with the Spain team on Monday over his support for independence, suggested then that he would be open to walking away from international football if coach Julen Lopetegui or his team mates felt uncomfortable with his presence. But he said on Wednesday, however, that he was fully committed to the team. “I considered it (quitting the Spain team) but in the end you have to evaluate every option and after thinking about it for a long time that I decided not to as leaving now would be letting the people who insult me win,” Pique told a news conference. “I believe the people who boo me are a minority and I don't want to give them the luxury of quitting. I have every confidence that there are many people, including in this group, who want me to stay and help the team win matches.”

STOKES DEAL

All-rounder Ben Stokes is set to be awarded an England central contract when the list is announced today. The announcement was due on Wednesday but has been delayed. Test vice-captain Stokes, 26, was arrested on suspicion of actual bodily harm in September after an incident outside a Bristol nightclub. He and batsman Alex Hales, who is set for a renewed limited-overs contract, will not be considered for selection until further notice.

TYSON’S END?

Former world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury says he will not reapply for a licence to fight from the British Boxing Board of Control. The 29-year-old had his licence revoked in October 2016 after allegations of doping emerged in June of that year. His decision not to seek a new licence casts Fury's future as a boxer into doubt again, although he has previously appeared to end his career via social media.

BRITS MAKE BOLD BIDS

The Football Association could bid to host the Champions League final in 2023, according to confidential UK Sport documents obtained by the BBC. The BBC report says the game is one of a number of "hosting targets" and a "strategic priority". The staging of parts of the Tour de France in 2021 and athletics' World Championships "in 2027 or 2029", are also listed as ambitions. UK Sport says it is "actively consider-

ing the feasibility of mega events in a number of other sports". The funding agency has announced it is investing almost ÂŁ30m over the next eight years "to maintain the country's position as a world-leading host of major sporting events". Wembley Stadium hosted the Champions League final in 2011 and 2013, and will stage the semi-finals and final of Euro 2020. The FA declined to comment, but has already announced plans to bid for the

2021 Uefa European Women's Championships, which is also listed in the documents as a "hosting target". Other events already secured include the 2018 Women's Hockey World Cup, the 2018 Boccia World Championships, the 2019 Netball World Cup and the 2019 World Road Cycling Championships. The 2019 Men's Cricket World Cup, 2019 Solheim Cup, and 2021 Rugby League World Cup will also be staged in Britain.

NOTHING FOR GRANTED

Lewis Hamilton says he is "not comfortable at all" with his position in the F1 championship despite a sizeable lead over rival Sebastian Vettel. The Mercedes driver is 34 points ahead of Vettel heading into Sunday's Japanese Grand Prix with 125 available in the remaining five races this year. Hamilton said at autograph session for Japanese fans in Suzuka: "I am under no illusion. I might have the nail a little bit in, but I need to keep hammering it. "It is not done until there is no more to push it in." Hamilton has gained 31 points on Vettel in the past two races after problems for the German and his Ferrari team. "There are so many points available and you have seen other years where things swing," Hamilton added. "The pendulum can swing. I am hoping if it starts to swing the other way we have enough force to push it back to where it should be." Ferrari have been quicker than Mercedes in the past two races but both their cars crashed out together at the first corner in Singapore and Vettel finished fourth in Malaysia after starting from the back because of an engine problem. Asked to rate his chances of overhauling Hamilton, Vettel said: "We have a chance. I tend not to rate many things. I think there is a chance and we make sure we use it.
