GUARDAMAR’S BIG BLAZE T

wo hectares of woodland was destroyed in a blaze deliberately started in the Playa Babilonia area of Guardamar on Monday afternoon. Guardamar’s mayor José Luis Sáez said that an arsonist caused the fire, which was reported at around 5.00pm. Crews were brought in from Almoradí, Orihuela and Torrevieja, to supplement the forest brigades based in Guardamar and Tibi.

S

It took crews four hours to bring the blaze under control, which was started in a protected area, with teams working through the night to make sure the fire did not restart. It was a busy day for fire tenders, as teams from Guardamar, Elche, and Crevillente also had to deal with a fire that burnt some six thousand square metres of canes off the Los Vaillos camino linking Catral to Dolores.

HIGH TECH COLLAR

martphone GPS technology was used to track down four violent robbers who broke into a property on the La Florida urbanisation on the Orihuela Costa. An unnamed couple, believed to be British, called the Orihuela local police after four men burst into their home, and stole mobile phones, jewellery, as well as some cash, which the authorities said was around 100 pounds. The woman was in state of shock when officers arrived, whilst her husband suffered an arm

injury as he bravely tried to stop the robbers from getting away. A number of patrol cars started a sweep of the area, whilst the couple were interviewed about their ordeal, as they provided the officers with a detailed description of the burglars. The clincher came though when the man told the police that there was GPS tracking enabled on the stolen smartphones, and he produced his computer tablet, which the crooks had not stolen, and the police noticed that

one of the phones was just 200 metres away. The police then decided to make a bee line for where the signal was coming from, and discovered four men hiding in some bushes, just metres away from the phones, which they had thrown away and smashed their screens. Unknown to them, one of the GPS trackers were still working. The gang (ages and nationalities undeclared) were arrested and made available to the Orihuela courts, whilst the couple's

property was returned to them.

An intoxicated man from the San Miguel de Salinas area faces assualt and battery charges after an Orihuela local police officer suffered a broken leg at Villamartin Plaza earlier in the month. Though the incident happened in the early hours of Monday September 11th, details have only just been released by the Orihuela police. A group of women enjoying a night out complained to a security guard about a drunken man constantly annoying them both verbally and physically. The guard realised that the burly indi-

vidual would be a bit of a handful, and so he called the police. The women were concerned that the drunken lunger might attack them as they waited for a taxi, but as the officers arrived, he turned his attention to them, as he became even more aggressive and refused to identify himself. He then shoved into one of the officers, who suffered a broken right tibia and fibia, but nevertheless the man was arrested. No details of the burly assailant's nationality or age has been released by the authorities.

Construction of a new roundabout on the RM-12 between the La Manga and Cabo de Palos started on Monday, with disruption for motorists scheduled to run until mid-November. The work on a busy stretch of road during the high season months which

carries up to 50 thousand vehicles a day, will see a 242 thousand euros spent on building the roundabout, which will provide easier and safer access to the Las Dunas commercial centre. November 18th has been pencilled in as the completion date.

Short Changed Thieves bungled an attempted robbery on an ATM in a Rojales bank, when they fled emptyhanded after the alarm went off. Guardia Civil and local police officers were at the scene quickly when the alarm was activated at a branch of the BBVA bank on la Plaza de España in the early hours of Sunday morning. The erstwhile thieves had broken through the main door and had started to use specialist tools to trying to get into the ATM, before the alarm frightened them away. The Guardia believe they may be a gang responsible

for other ATM robberies across Alicante Province. The area was dusted down for fingerprints with a

helpful sign printed out and placed on the machine stating that the ATM was out of order.

More Promises Orihuela councillors met with around 100 people living on the Entre Naranjos urbanisation last Friday, and promised to work with the residents group to help improve services in an area often nicknamed as the “Forgotten City”. Health and Statistics councillor Noelia Grao and International Residents councillor Sofía Álvarez discussed subjects like renewing registration on the municipal padron and getting access to the SIP A 59-year-old woman from the San Bartolomé area of Orihuela died last Friday after being involved in a three vehicle collision on the CV-91 Orihuela to Guardamar road. The crash happened at La Campaneta at around 7.10 am, as a car hit a tractor as it was overtaking it, and then went into the path of an oncoming vehicle heading towards Orihuela. Two people were transferred to the Vega Baja Hospital for treatment, with one man suffering from bruising, and another with chest pains.

health card. Amongst the gripes of residents was the long-standing

anger over poor public transport links to and from Entre Naranjos.

A Super Summer

The Orihuela area has had a bumper summer for holiday visitors according to tourism councillor Sofía Álvarez. She's based that conclusion on the number of inquiries received by tourist information centres around the Orihuela Costa and in Orihuela City, which have increased by 30 percent on last year. Álvarez's calculations are also based on 16 thousand more hits on the Orihuela

council's tourism website, along with big hotel occupancy figures in July and August, with nearly 100 percent being reached on the Orihuela Costa at times. She claimed that the increases were down to the work done by Orihuela's tourism department over the last two years, but with record figures hitting all of Spain's tourist hotspots over the last two to three years, the boost in Orihuela does appear to be part of a

national trend, as neighbouring areas like Torrevieja have reported similar rises in inquiries and occupancy rates. Álvarez has also promoted Orihuela's involvement in World Tourism Day this weekend with a series of events, including a Moors and Christians parade this Saturday evening on the Aquamarina urbanisation, and a walk taking in the Cabo Roig tower on Sunday.

Bidders Explore

The two remaining bidders for the contract to run Murcia’s Corvera International Airport have been given extensive tours of the facility, ahead of a deadline at the end of October to provide further details of their proposals for Cruz Roja lifeguards tried in vain to save the life of a British holidaymaker who drowned at a Guardamar beach on Saturday. The woman, said to be in her seventies, got into difficulties in the waters of Playa del Moncayo, and was with her husband at the time. The beach was not on the list of patrolled beaches at the time, whilst other beaches in the Guardamar area had red flags in operation to warn people not to go into the water.

the 25-year franchise. Representatives from AENA and EDEIS have until October 30th to submit their next documents in the second stage of the tendering process. AENA currently run the existing facility at San Javier,

whilst French company EDEIS are the operators at Castellon in the north of the Valencia region. No timescale has been given as to when the Corvera francise will be awarded or when the empty facility will finally open.

Letting Fraudsters Four Spaniards have been arrested by the National Police for running a bogus holiday letting company offering non-existent rentals in the Benidorm area, and subsequently swindling around 40 thousand eurs from at least 160 clients. The National Police in Elda started their investigations in April after a complaint from a customer of the firm, who found out that he had paid for a rental on a property that the scammers had no right to offer. The quartet would use photographs of properties that they saw on the internet, and would then copy them, and advertise them as being on their books. They would pinch identities of people, including those who were no longer alive, to register phone numbers as part of the con to suggest everything was

above board, and to use those names as contacts once customers had paid half of their rental in advance. The majority of the victims found they had been scammed when they arrived for their holiday, and could not contact the agency or get into the property that

they had hired. Further afield, two people were arrested in Valencia City for advertising four bogus holiday lets as they defrauded clients of nearly three thousand euro, with six arrests also being made recently across the Valencia region over similar cases of fraud.

Magazine Cost Torrevieja council is set to spend up to one point three million euro of public money over the next six years to keep the Vista Alegre magazine going. Last June, the Suena Torrevieja political party described the publication as “propaganda”, after it featured the ten members of the government team on the front cover. The council magazine first appeared in 1955, and two bidders are applying for the contract to produce it, with the cost likely to be lower than published in the tender document. The tender sees tripling the circulation of Vista Alegre to five thousand copies and for it to come out every week, as opposed to fortnightly, with an increase of distribution points across Torrevieja. Back in June of this year, Pablo Samper of Suena

Torrevieja slammed Vista Alegre for bias and also ignoring opposition political party news releases, as well

as querying the costs of publishing the magazine which are "paid for out of local taxpayer pockets".

Cooking Taster

British Drowning Valencian president Ximo Puig visited Los Montesinos last week to check out the municipality's schools and a new vocational training cookery course at the town's high school. Puig (pictured fourth from the left) said that the 15 stu-

dents on the course were part of 78 thousand young people across the Valencia region that were in vocational training, and that there were plans to increase the numbers in the future. The regional president, accompanied by

Los Montesinos mayor José Manuel Butrón (pictured middle back), also visited the Virgen del Pilar primary school, where he announced that his government's education department would fund improvements to the playground.

Journey's End

Spain’s maritime rescue service says it saved 64 migrants from two small boats trying to make a perilous sea crossing from Africa to Europe. The rescue service said one of its boats intercepted 28 migrants last Friday near

Alboran Island, which lies in the western Mediterranean Sea east of the Strait of Gibraltar. The service has an outpost on the small island. It posted photos of African men packed into a small rubber boat. The rescue ship docked at the town of Motril

on Saturday morning. A second rescue boat pulled another 31 men and five boys from another small craft. The service identified the passengers as Moroccans and says several of them were suffering from hypothermia.

Madrid's Move

Free Ride Gripe

A man who got a free train ride across Galicia in northern Spain has decided to complain to operator RENFE about not having to pay for the journey, because he feels a lack of revenue might force the company to close the line. José María Lorza set off from the station in Ferrol and was unable to buy a ticket due to machines being out of order. At his destination in Ribadeo, there was no con-

ductor to check his ticket, with no barriers in use, allowing passengers to pass straight though. He went to the station information office and asked for a complaint form. “A ticket for this journey costs me two euros, but if nobody checks them or you can get on the train without buying one, how long are we going to have the service for before it's disbanded because it makes a loss?” Lorza queried.

“The rail service from Ferrol to Ribadeo is essential for the area, but if this is how it's managed, how long is it going to last?” Lorza's comments about the 'free ride' is just part of his wider complaint about the neglect the route suffers from and the fact that its 'poor management' goes against authorities' ongoing campaigning for people to use public transport more often instead of taking their cars.

Mozzie Patrols

Car numbers will fall by a fifth in Madrid in eight years' time thanks to a new anti-air pollution plan announced by the city council, aimed at attempting to combat the area's severe problems. Traffic restrictions in the Spanish capital will include all private vehicles being banned from the central

Gran Vía, which runs down to the main Puerta del Sol square, from June next year, plus increased hour slots for parking meters and new ones set to be erected All cars which do not have the General Directorate of Traffic's (DGT's) 'environmental kitemark' will be banned from the entire

city from the start of the 2025. This effectively means one car in every five, or 20% of those currently on the road. Petrol cars registered prior to the year 2000 and diesel cars registered before 2006 are those which will not pass the DGT's 'environmentallyfriendly' test.

The Orihuela Costa has seen a big rise this month in mosquito activity due to heavy rain a few weeks ago, followed by high temperatures. These have helpe to provide perfect breeding conditions for the insect. In keeping with neighbouring areas like Torrevieja, Orihuela council has authorised an increase in the service provided by the company responsible for mosquito control. Environment councillor Miguel Ángel Fernández said:- “The number of swimming pools on the Orihuela Costa in now

uninhabited holiday homes coupled with containers filled with water, are ideal breeding grouds for the tiger mosquito. We are aware of the recent problems with mosquitoes and we have

upped the control and elmination work that is going on”. The councillor also appealed for residents to call the authority on 966 742 374 to report any outbreaks.

Airport Agreement The threat of strikes hitting Spanish airports including those at Alicante-Elche and San Javier has been lifted, after a provisional agreement between the unions and the state-owned airport management companies AENA and Enaire. Industrial action due for September was suspended as all bar two elements of workers' requests had been agreed in time by the firms. The only issues outstanding at a meeting on Tuesday were pay rises and unions'

requirement for 600 extra staff to be taken on in addition to those replaced due to voluntary exits and retirements. No details of what

was agreed has been made public, only that the scheduled dates of strike action through to the end of the year have been scrapped.

Falling Factors Spain is no longer in the top 10 healthiest countries in the world, having plunged to number 23 from seventh place in the last year, according to the medical journal, The Lancet. Out of 188 countries, Spain used to be healthier than 181 of them, but has plummeted 16 places in 12 months – largely due to its levels of smoking, alcohol consumption and childhood obesity. Rankings are based upon 37 criteria within the framework of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Objectives for 2030, the first-ever exhaustive analysis of health and lifestyle trends between 1990 and 2016. Since last year, the criteria has expanded and now

includes availability of vaccinations, physical and sexual violence, child sex abuse and the death rate. Spain's overall score is a very creditable 74%, but this has fallen from 82% in 2016 – mainly due to alcohol consumption levels. Last year, drinking issues scored 57 out of 100 – the higher the percentage, the better the situation – but has since dropped to just 10 out of 100. Smoking rates have also contributed to Spain's drastic decline: last year, at

47%, still below the 'pass mark', has got worse and now sits at 25%. Overweight and obese children were responsible for Spain's worst 'grade' in 2016, at 33 out of 100 – and although the ranking in this area is still poor at 36, it has at least shown a tiny improvement. Two other 'fails' or 'nearfails' for Spain are HIV and AIDS, scoring 51 out of 100 – albeit better than last year's 49 points – and child sex abuse, at 49 out of 100.

Hello Sailor The ex-Spanish monarch, King Juan Carlos, became a world sailing champion last week at the tender age of 79. The former king along with his crew including the experienced Dennis Conner, a veteran of the Americas Cup races, won the Six Meter Class World Championships in Vancouver, Canada. Juan Carlos and his crew were the overall victor after a series of eight races organised by the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club.

Quilts Donated

Dave The Captain

Ten handmade quilts have been donated by Barbora Dick to help raise money for some new internal fencing at the Rojales-based Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre. Czech-born Barbora, who now lives in Alicante, doesn’t know Easy Horse Care founders Sue and Rod Weeding personally, but learnt of their work and funding struggles through long-time supporter of the charity, Kate Cammish, and the local media. "I have decided to donate the quilts to Easy Horse Care because I think both Sue and Rod are doing an incredible job with the charity,” Barbora said. “I wanted to honour the enthusiastic work of the charity, and to help a group that entirely depends on donations”

Justice Served

A serial conman arrested on the Costa Blanca nearly a year ago, has pled guilty to nine counts of fraud at Chelmsford Crown Court, after being extradited back to the UK. He will be sentenced next month. Fowler went missing in 2014 after being sentenced to nine months in jail for fraud at Norwich Crown Court, and popped up on the Costa Blanca using a false name and instigated a variety of fresh scams. The 39-year-old, from Colchester, was later arrested by the Guardia Civil for unrelated gun licensing matters, but was released in May last year, with no European Arrest Warrant being executed at the time. After skipping bail from Norwich Crown Court,

Fowler rented an apartment from British businesswoman Betty Inglis in December 2014. In January 2016, he moved to Pedregeur after his neighbours found out about his past. Once there he tried to sell a car to expat Diana Lindsay-Vosper. The vehicle turned out to be stolen. Last autumn an unnamed British expat said he had received a 2,500-euro cheque from Fowler in exchange for goods he had sold him. The cheque bounced. He said: “Nobody believed he could be a fraudster as he was such a sad-looking guy. He had the perfect cover.” Fowler last week pleaded guilty to fraud by false representation. Essex Police said "a great deal of effort and commitment" had gone

into tracing Fowler and bringing him back to the country to face justice. He has been detained at Brockfield House in Essex, a secure mental health facility. Essex Police said he had been wanted for fraud involving at least nine victims in the UK.. He had advertised items, including high value watches, camera equipment, phones and laptops, which he did not possess on the online sites, police said. Fowler initially went missing in 2014 after pleading guilty to a separate fraud in Norfolk. He conned videographer Tom Tailford out of £21,000 worth of camera equipment which he was supposed to have taken on loan but never returned.

Suicide Riddle

A couple found dead in their home in Huelva province are believed to have taken their lives by an overdose of pills, and were not discovered for five days, until the woman's young children said something to the landlord. Mario Peña, the mayor of Calañas, said the children’s mother, aged around 40, and her current boyfriend had only lived in the house in La Zarza, a hamlet in the municipality for around a month, but it was an area she had lived in all her life until a few years ago. A post-mortem found high amounts of prescription and over-the-counter drugs in the couple's system, but no signs of violence, leading the police that they had died in a suicide pact.

The woman's four children, aged between five and 13, said they had been washing, dressing and feeding themselves for five days and had not realised their mother and stepfather were dead. None of them thought to check the bedroom, where the bodies were, because they assumed that their mother was asleep and her boyfriend was playing computer games, something that happened on a regular basis. It was only when their landlord called round and one of the children said their mother could not come to the door as she was 'asleep and very cold' that his suspicions were aroused and the Guardia Civil called out. The landlord immediately noticed

a foul smell and asked the children to open the bedroom door. The mother had recently visited the social services in Calaña to apply for benefits to help her pay her rent, and this was said to be in process at the time of her death. It is thought the appointment was just a few days beforehand, given that nobody had seen her or her boyfriend – said to be 10 years or so older than her – in the village since 'at least Tuesday or Wednesday of last week. The father of the three youngest children has been given temporary custody of all four, and he hopes to keep all of them together on a permanent basis in the future.

Pension Tracing Service

11

Keith Littlewood, International Financial Adviser at Blacktower, Costa Cálida Since the Pensions Freedom Act came into force in the UK April 2015 there has been a huge outflow of money from defined benefit pension schemes and personal pensions in the UK. Many people have taken advantage of the new flexibilities byhaving control of their own pension pots. It is true, it is becoming increasingly difficult to transfer from some schemes now, as hurdles have been put in place by some providers. These hurdles also ensure that individuals are not transferring their pots to unauthorised schemes. They also double check that the advice they are receiving about the pension transfer is from a qualified Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). For you, the pension holder, it is quite an easy process. If you contact a qualified IFA like myself, then we can do all the hard work for you. Here are the steps that you need to take: • Contact the IFA • Complete a letter of authority

keith.littlewood@blacktowerf m.com. The Blacktower office address is: Calle Isla Tabarca, Urbanización Regia Roig, 44,Local 15, 03189 Orihuela Costa; Alicante We can be found on the Cabo Roig strip on the first slip road after the pyramid roundabout if coming from La Zenia, in the La Regia Commercial Centre. The office signage can be clearly seen from the N332. To make an appointment call the office on 965320562 or mobile 657684094. • 4 – 8 weeks later, the IFA should have all the information available for you to make your decisions. The IFA should complete various forms with you, including afact-find and attitude-to-risk questionnaire, and should be able to provide you with a detailed report on all the pros and cons of transferring your pension, and give you all the options available to you now and when you intend to take the benefits.

You should not wait until you are ready to retire to find out what your options are. There are many cases where pension pots built up in the UK years ago are now sat dormant and invested in old funds that are not managed as well as some other funds that are available now. Reviewing your pension pot during the early years on a regular basis can make a huge difference to the size of fund you have when you come to retire. There is no cost to you to

find out about each of your pension pots.Normally a provider will allow you to apply for a transfer value once each year free of charge. They often charge for a second or subsequent application within a 12-month period. I would strongly recommend you find out about your pension pot now; you have nothing to lose and you will be better placed to start planning your retirement. I have been involved with pensions now

for nearly 30 years and can categorically state keeping on top of your own provision will pay you dividends in the long run. In today’s financial climate, it is essential you do everything you can to make sure your money is safe and secure, and what you want to transpire in the future has the best chance of happening. If you need advice or if have any questions regarding the above, you can contact me, Keith Littlewood DipPFS, on 657 684 094 or email

The above information was correct at the time of preparation and does not constitute investment advice and you should seek advice from a professional adviser before embarking on any financial planning activity. Up Close And Personal British pet-lovers now think nothing of kissing the dog goodbye before leaving home, sharing a bath with their pet – and face-timing the cat, according to a new study.

ments to their dogs and cats and the lengths some people go to to ensure their pets’ needs are not only catered for, but, in many cases, exceeded.

Researchers found a large percentage of pet owners are going out of their way to do things for their animals that some may consider loopy as they turn to them for comfort and company amid the stresses and strains of modern life.

“The acceptance by wider society that our pets are an integral part of the family unit has made it easier to indulge in our dogs and cats, enabling us to do things with our pets such as taking them out to dinner that several years ago simply wouldn’t have been possible.”

It also emerged nearly a fifth of cat owners get up to serve breakfast at 4am while another 40 per cent take their canine companion to bed with them at night. Others admitted they have asked a friend or relative to call them so they can hear their cat’s purr while at work. Commissioned by Lily’s Kitchen pet food, the poll of 2,000 dog and cat owners also found a third have let their pet into the toilet at the same time as them or shared a BATH with their pet.

LOUIE Louie was found wandering the streets trying to interact with people, and appears to have been well looked after. Sadly he has no microchip, so he could not be reunited with his owners. “As a social species, we are programmed to seek out relationships with others, human or otherwise. The infantile features common to dogs and cats, such as their big eyes and clumsy movements, can trigger care-giving behaviour.” “This may explain some of the findings of the research, notably why we treat dogs and cats in much the same way as our children; we have simply evolved to love and care for soft, helpless things, human or otherwise.”

Others have let their animals choose what to watch on TV and have read books to them, while a quarter think nothing of taking their dog to the pub with them.

Rare Turtle Find

A two-metre-long turtle washed onto a beach in Calella, near Barcelona last week. The dead leatherback turtle, which reportedly weighs 700kg, was videoed being removed from the beach with a crane. It is reportedly the second leatherback turtle, or Dermochelys Coriacea, to wash ashore on the Spanish

coast in the past month, after fishermen in Vilanova i la Geltu found a 300 kilo deceased turtle at the beginning of September. Sightings of the giant turtles in the Mediterranean are rare, with only ten being spotted in the last 2,000 years, according to biologists. The giant turtles prefer tropical and subtropical

waters and are usually found in South America. Pere Alzina, a biologist from Arenys de Mar, said:"We could have the great surprise of finding a leatherback turtle nest in the Mediterranean". The turtle that was found in Calella was taken to Barcelona University for research testing.

Centenarians are fastest growing age group in UK, figures show Centenarians are the fastest growing age group in the UK, with the number of 100year-olds almost doubling over a 14-year period, according to the Office for National Statistics. Although they make up a very small proportion of the total UK population (0.02% in 2016), their numbers have grown rapidly from 7,750 in 2002 to 14,910 last year. In 1986 there were just were just 3,642 centenarians. Female centenarians outnumber males by five to one. The ONS figures, published on Wednesday, also show that the number of people aged 90 and over living in the UK last year was the highest ever – 571,245. ONS analyst Ngaire Coombs said the increase was “largely driven by people who were born during the post first world war baby boom reaching age 90 and progressing through the oldest ages, causing both population growth and ageing within this age group”. The rise in centenarians means there are now two for every 10,000 people in the UK. People aged 90 and over make up less than one

in 100 in the population. The ONS said the main driver of population ageing in recent decades has been improving mortality at all ages, but particularly at older ages. Improvements in survival to older ages are due to factors such as improved medical treatments, housing and living standards, nutrition, and changes in the population’s smoking habits, it said. However, data published in a separate ONS bulletin on Wednesday showed that improvements in life expectancy in the UK have slowed in recent years. Life expectancy for a newborn boy was 79.2 years in 2014-16, while for a newborn girl it was 82.9 years. For both sexes, the rise was just 0.1 years more than 2013-15. Since 2010, yearly increases in life expectancy at birth have dropped by more than half for males and by nearly two-thirds for females, compared with the preceding three decades. The Office for National Statistics (ONS), which uses three-yearly periods to offset the effects of fluctuations

caused by seasonal events such as flu, found that improvements in life expectancy at birth for males in the UK slowed to six weeks a year between 2010-12 and 2014-16, compared with 13.6 weeks between 1980-82 and 200911. The slowdown was even more dramatic for females, with the yearly increase falling from 10.0 weeks to 3.6 weeks. The ONS suggested that the reduction in the rate of the increase was due to previous successes in challenging some of the major contributors to early death. A spokeswoman said: “Part of the reason for this could be that some of the factors that have historically driven life expectancy improvements, such as reductions in smoking and circulatory disease, may largely have been realised.” However, a former government adviser on the links between poverty and illhealth has suggested that a drop in NHS and social care funding may be responsible for life expectancy rates stalling. Sir Michael Marmot, who

published a major review of health inequalities for Gordon Brown’s Labour government in early 2010 and is the director of the Institute of Health Equity at University College London, said rates of increase in life expectancy had slowed

across Europe since 2010 but generally by more in the UK than elsewhere. “We have to look at what’s been happening [as rates have slowed] and there was a global financial crisis and we then have to look at what was happening in Britain

and I raise the question could austerity have been playing a part?” he said. He said the UK should be aiming to emulate Hong Kong, which has the highest life expectancy in the world – 81.1 years for men and 87.3 for women.

Stress and social media fuel mental health crisis Girls and young women are experiencing a “gathering crisis” in their mental health linked to conflict with friends, fears about their body image and pressures created by social media, experts have warned. Rates of stress, anxiety and depression are rising sharply among teenage girls in what mental health specialists say is a “deeply worrying” trend that is far less pronounced among boys of the same age. They warn that the NHS lacks the resources to adequately tackle the problem. New NHS data reveals that the number of times a girl aged 17 or under has been admitted to hospital in

England because of selfharm has jumped from 10,500 to more than 17,500 a year over the past decade – a rise of 68%. The jump among boys was much lower: 26%. Cases of self-poisoning among girls – ingesting pills, alcohol or other chemical substances – rose 50%, from 9,700 to 14,600 between 2005-06 and 201516. Similarly, the number of girls treated in hospital after cutting themselves quadrupled, from 600 to 2,400 over the same period, NHS Digital figures show. Rising levels of “body dissatisfaction” – insecurity and low self-esteem about their appearance – have been

identified as driving the unprecedented levels of mental turmoil in young women. “There is a growing crisis in children and young people’s mental health, and in particular a gathering crisis in mental distress and depression among girls and young women,” said Dr Bernadka Dubicka, the chair of the child and adolescent faculty at the Royal College of Psychiatrists. “Emotional problems in young girls have been significantly, and very worryingly, on the rise over the past few years.” Increasing numbers of academic studies are finding that mental health problems have been soaring among

girls over the past 10 – and in particular five – years, coinciding with the period in which young people’s use of social media has exploded. So many girls are now seeking help that NHS children and adolescent mental health services cannot cope, warned Dubicka. “Over the past few years we have seen overwhelming demand from young girls presenting with emotional distress and self-harm. We don’t have the resources to meet the demand.” Mental health data shows stark difference between girls and boys Government-funded research last week showed that one in four (24%) girls

aged 14, and 9% of boys the same age in the UK are beset by such negative emotions – including loneliness, self-hatred and feeling unloved – that they are

depressed. That was double the 12% rate of depression seen in girls, and 5.5% in boys, a decade earlier, said Dr Praveetha Patalay, the lead author of the study.

Understanding Dementia Dementia is certainly not the same as age-related brain decline. In age-related memory loss, the accuracy of the memory remains sharp, instead what declines is the speed of recall. A person suffering age-related memory loss will struggle to remember the name of a familiar face or place, but will eventually recollect the information. In dementia, however, the sufferer is completely unable to recall a familiar face. Dementia is the persistent and progressive loss of normal brain function. The symptoms of dementia will vary depending on the severity of the condition which in turn depends on

age, the presence of other medical problems as well as socio-economic status. Brain degeneration is the primary cause of dementia, and there are some wellknown causes of brain degeneration that eventually gives rise to dementia. Deficiencies of vitamin B complex is one of those causes. The B vitamins are essential for energy production in the brain and for producing brain chemicals and proteins that prevent memory loss. B complex supplements quickly reverse this type of dementia. Vascular Dementia is because of narrowing of the arteries that results from

Parkinson's, associated with dementia. One of the earliest symptoms of dementia is the loss of appetite which progresses to weight loss. The typical symptoms of dementia, however, include memory loss, depression, disorientation, poor judgment, and speech problems, difficulties with reading and writing and social withdrawals. There may also be anger, paranoia, delusions and hallucinations. inflammation of the arteries. Narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to the brain, and without an adequate blood supply, the brain starts to lose its vital functions.

A build of heavy metals in the brain such as iron, aluminium, and mercury is a cause of brain diseases such as Alzheimer's and

The treatment and management of Dementia will depend on the cause. Avoiding toxic metals including iron is important. Iron plays a vital role in the body and helps prevent

anaemia. However, care should be taken with iron tablets for treating anaemia as they easily become overloaded in the brain and cause dementia. Detoxing the body with effective detox agent will help eliminate toxins from the body and prevent inflammation. Vascular dementia due to narrowing of the arteries can be improved or halted using serrapeptase, a natural enzyme that dissolves plaque in arteries and improves blood circulation. High-precision radiotherapy for prostate cancer 'shows promise'

by Karen Simpson

"Targeted radiotherapy 'cures' prostate cancer that kills thousands," reports suggest. The news is based on a UK study of the use of high-precision radiotherapy to treat men with advanced localised prostate cancer. Researchers wanted to see if they could safely target cancer cells that had spread outside the prostate to nearby lymph nodes without damaging nearby healthy cells, and reduce treatment side effects. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men – more than 47,000 cases are

diagnosed in the UK every year. Some 447 men with locally advanced disease took part in the 10-year study, carried out by the Institute of Cancer Research and the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust. The high-tech radiotherapy, called pelvic lymph node intensity modulated radiation therapy (PLN-IMRT), can modify the shape and strength of its beams to target cancerous cells more effectively. The main aim of the study was to look at the side effects of the treatment, specifically on the bladder and bowels.

Five years after receiving treatment, up to 71% of patients were alive and disease-free. Only 8-16% of patients experienced bowel or bladder complications. This is promising research that suggests PLN-IMRT should be studied further. Laterstage randomised controlled trials would be the best way of confirming the safety and potential benefit of this treatment for men with advanced localised prostate cancer and seeing how it compares with other treatment approaches.

COME AND JOIN US! It’s the perfect time to consider joining Find A Spanish Property as a property associate, as property prices are on the rise, and the market is blossoming. 2016 was a positive year for the real estate market with prices having bottomed out the year before with modest price rises. Things have really kicked in during 2017, in strong contrast to the recession period that kicked in during 2008 and 2009. Official government figures confirm that prices are rising this year, and outside the cities of Madrid and Barcelona, Alicante Province which features the Costa Blanca, and the Murcia region with the Costa Calida tourist area, are two of the biggest areas on mainland Spain which are seeing substantial rises in demand along with price increases. The cranes are back with new homes being built by the coast, and the re-sale market continues to rise, fuelled by low interest rates in Spain. Statistics show that demand for homes from British buyers is still high, despite pessimistic fears last year over the Brexit factor, coupled with purchasers from across Europe, and even further afield. Recent surveys show that the majority of British people living in Spain are aged 65 and over, and website statistics confirm that older British nationals with no mortgage on their UK property are still very much looking at Spain as their area of choice to buy a holiday home, or even somewhere to retire to. It’s a great time to get involved in becoming a seller of real-estate in Spain, especially since most of the cowboys disappeared thanks to the recession nearly a decade ago. TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

Much as I like Doctor Who, my favourite all-time TV sci fi show is Star Trek, from the original sixties show down to the varying spin-offs down the years. The Golden Goose got cooked too much and the last incarnation, called just Enterprise left screens 12 years ago in a whimper and it didn’t cut the mustard for me. The Trek franchise had simply run out of steam. The build up to Star Trek:Discovery and the premiere on CBS in the States on Sunday was almost Game of Thrones-like, and I have to say it has been worth the hype. Check it out for yourself on either Netlflix UK or Netflix Spain. What I loved about Discovery is that it is not a rehash of the old Trek, and the first two episodes (releases to come once a week on Monday) were like a very grand movie set a few decades ahead of the Captain Kirk era. We get some very nasty Klingons wanting a good old fashioned scrap with the federation after Sonequa MartinGreen’s character of first

Live Long And Prosper

officer Michael Burnham (a human raised by Sarek the Vulcan, who happens to be Spock’s dad:- got it?) kills a Klingon who is up to no good at a destroyed satellite. Martin-Green is terrific, as Walking Dead fans can confirm (she was bumped off last season so that she could join Trek), and she

rebels against the captain of the USS Shenzhou over wanting to be tough over the Klingons. That brings tragic consequences and sets us up nicely for the rest of the series. This is new and exciting Star Trek that is offering more sophistication compared to the past, with some great special effects, along

with a compelling lead character that has been wrenched away from being on a ship that she has served seven years on. Trek fans will not be disappointed and totally new viewers can join in from the start and not feel that they are not being allowed to join a club. If you want traditional

Trek, it is alive and well in a curious but enjoyable comedy spoof called The Orville from the mind of Family Guy creator, Seth McFarlane, which will air on FOX UK. The first three episodes offer the odd belly laugh here or there, but essentially I was surprised by the quite serious tone of the stories. McFarlane plays Captain Ed

Mercer, with his first officer just having to be his ex-wife, who he caught in bed with a blue-skinned alien! It is a likeable homage to Star Trek, but because it is neither fish nor fowl in either drama or comedy, I see it falling between many stools and much as I like it, I do not see it lasting beyond the initial 13 episode commission. The divisive American Horror Story is back for another crazy run on FOX in the UK and Spain, and it is bang up to date. The story is called Cult, and features AHS favourite Sarah Paulson as a woman who has had psychiatric issues in the past and has a relapse when Donald Trump wins the US presidential election last November. I will not supply any further details because it is never easy to explain AHS, but the dark humour continues mixed in with obvious divots thrown in the direction of Trump, plus some nasty clowns; gruesome murders; and a killer microwave. Nothing changes in the enjoyable world of AHS!

Channel 4 and AMC have confirmed that filming on the Kudos produced, critically acclaimed series Humans has commenced. With writers Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley leading the writing team, the series is set in a parallel present and explores what happens when the lines between humans and machines are blurred. The eight-episode third series is due to air next year on Channel 4. Joining the cast this season is “Catastrophe” and “Apple Tree Yard” star Mark Bonnar. Mark Bonnar plays Neil Sommer. An intriguingly charming scientist on a government commission with whom Laura develops a strong personal connection. He joins series regulars Gemma Chan, Katherine

Parkinson, Tom GoodmanHill, Emily Berrington, Colin Morgan, Ivanno Jeremiah and Ruth Bradley. One year after the dawn of consciousness, a decimated and oppressed Synth population fights to survive in a world that hates and fears them. In a divided Britain, Synths and Humans struggle to broker an uneasy peace, but when fractures within the Synth community itself start to appear, all hope of stability is threatened. As the synth family, Mia, Niska and Max continue to battle for their right to survival, Joe, Laura and their children struggle to come to terms with the cataclysmic events of the last series and their deeply polarised views on the implications of the singularity.

Škoda Kodiaq Is 2018 Caravan And Motorhome Club Towcar Of The Year • • • •

Kodiaq wins two price and weight categories and is named overall Towcar of the Year Octavia Scout named best £26,000-£30,000 towcar Both ŠKODA models praised for performance, practicality and value for money ŠKODA takes towcar trophy tally to seven for 2017

It’s been pulling buyers in since hitting UK showrooms in March, and now the new ŠKODA Kodiaq has proved itself to be the ultimate towing companion by The Caravan and Motorhome Club. The seven-seater SUV has been named 2018 Towcar of the Year after taking victory in one of the toughest judging processes in the industry. The competition’s 44 entrants were split into seven price classes and two weight categories – under 1,800kg and over 1,800kg. In addition to winning the overall 2018 title, the Kodiaq – tested in 2.0 TDI 190PS SE L 4x4 DSG form – was also named as the best car in the £33,000-£38,000 price bracket, and the best car in the All-Wheel Drive Under 1800kg category. Now in its 35th year, the Caravan and Motorhome Club Towcar of the Year has one of the most thorough testing and judging procedures in the industry. Each car on the shortlist was put through its paces at the Millbrook Proving Ground in Bedfordshire and was judged not only on its towing performance over the testing circuit at Millbrook, but also its practicality in daily use as a caravan towcar. Value for money, ease of hitching and the quality of handbook towing information were also taken into account during the judging process. Awarding the Kodiaq its Towcar of the year title, the judging committee said: “ŠKODA has once again built a fantastic, no nonsense, utterly awesome towcar. The Kodiaq put in one of the best performances of the competition. Relaxing, stable, dependable, comfortable touring at its best.” Not to be outdone by its larger sibling, the Octavia Scout also drove off with the award for Best £26,000-£30,000 Towcar – comfortably seeing off the competition to take the top spot. Tested in 2.0 TDI 150PS 4x4 form, the Scout won praise for its practicality and smooth driving experience. Announcing the Octavia Scout as the winner, the judges said: “The two-litre turbodiesel engine delivered power and acceleration seamlessly all the way. Traction, handling, driver comfort and ergonomics and the ‘confidence-inspiring’ brakes all received high marks.” ŠKODA’s latest haul of towing awards further reinforces the brand’s reputation in the caravanning community. In 2017 alone, the brand has won seven key industry titles, including Best Car (up to 1,400kg) for the Octavia, and Best Car (1,4001,549kg) for the Superb in the 2017 Tow Car Awards.

Motor Village UK Hosts Inspirational David Bowie Art Exhibition Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ flagship dealer Motor Village UK has once again been chosen as the venue for a top art exhibition – this time a presentation of photography and artworks of singer David Bowie.

The Wigmore Street, London site – usually home to FCA cars such as the Fiat 500, Alfa Romeo Giulietta, Abarth 124 spider and Jeep Renegade – was converted last week (21 September) into a stylish gallery and private view drinks reception to showcase this homage to the ‘Ziggy Stardust’ and ‘Aladdin Sane’ performer.

“David Bowie’s sense of subjectivity was the inspiration behind the show. It’s a chance to celebrate both his private and artistic persona, and we are delighted that Motor Village UK has agreed to host us. It’s a perfect and unique place for this type of event,” says Monica Colussi.

Organised and curated for Motor Village UK by artist liaison agent Monica Colussi, the exhibition both salutes David Bowie while adding to his legacy with a collection of existing and commissioned work, including paintings, photographs and sculptures. Featured artists include Guido Harari, Rankin, Lincoln Townley and Louis Sidoli.

“We’re very happy to host this most important exhibition at Motor Village,” says Rob Calver, managing director, Motor Village UK. “The subject of the exhibition is legendary and the featured artists are among some of the greatest available. We were again able to offer a first class reception and a unique showroom environment. I am delighted that the evening was such a great success.”

Motor Village UK was chosen because of its central London position and unique design and space. Situated just off Oxford Street, the showroom was originally created in 2008 with future exhibitions, displays and receptions in the plans, as well as the ability to showcase and sell cars.

This week (28 September) in a related event, the Motor Village UK showroom hosted an exclusive launch of GQ Magazine editor-in-chief Dylan Jones’ new book, David Bowie: A Life.

Local Battles SAMM Racing

The 2017 Línea Directa Valencian lawn bowling championships are moving into the business stage as of today (Friday), after National Director and Valencian Delegate Bob Donnelly formally opened proceedings at a ceremony held last week at the San Miguel Bowls Club. The semi-finals of the various singles as well as the doubles, triples and fours

events take place today, with the finals leading to the end of the championships and the closing ceremony on Tuesday. Amongst the highlights, Peta Rhodes (pictured) from the Quesada club will take on Carol Rudge from the San Miguel club in the ladies singles semi-finals, with San Miguel’s Mary Dyer playing Ann-Marie Stephenson from the Emerald Isle club.

A lack of breeze meant a delayed start to last Sunday’s second Autumn Season Handicap racing organised by SAMM (Sailing Association Mar Menor) at their Los Alcazares base. Once the first race action got going, the single handers of Tug Wilson (Laser 2000) and Julian Singleton (pictured in Topaz Duo) drew away from the rest of the fleet, as Tug went over the line 14 seconds ahead. After Mistral was forced to

retire in the second race, seven dinghies remained in close contention until the Topaz retired after capsizing following a collision during the third lap. The larger, slower ‘Sirocco’ gradually dropped back but still performed extremely well, as Tug Wilson crossed the line first, but after applying the handicaps, John Down in RS Quba won the second race, with Julian Singleton taking the first contest.

Walking Success

The Los Montesinosbased Monte Mentals walking football team recently hosted a one day tournament with visiting Almeria teams Lubrin Leg-Ends and La Alforquia Geri-Hatricks taking on Monte and a side from Lo Crispin. The tournament was played in a good and fair

sprit and the final results saw the winners of the tournament being declared as the La Alforquia Geri-Hatricks, who won on goal difference. The Mentals will be travelling south to Lubrin in October for a tournament involving six teams including the Eastbourne Strollers from Sussex.

Torry On The Spot

Away Day Draw

CD ORIHUELA B 0 CD TORREVIEJA 1

PINOSO CF 2 CD THADER 2

After three successive home matches in the Preferente for Torrevieja yielding two wins and a draw, Torry produced their third one-nil victory of the season in their first away match of the campaign, putting them in a cluster of four clubs with 10 points to their name at the top of the table. The game’s only goal came in the 32 minute when Walid was bundled down in the penalty area by a clumsy challenge from Rafa Canales, with the spotkick

from Manu Amores giving keeper Aitor no chance. Minutes later Orihuela a had decent shout for a penalty for a foul on Lizón turned down, and at the stroke of half-time, a header from Gian went wide, when it looked easier to score, and that brought down the curtain on a fairly unexciting first period of play. Both sides had chances to score in a vastly more entertaining second half which produced a double save from Orihuela keeper Aitor

depriving Dani and then Juanpe on a rebound, and towards the end, Manu Amores, could have doubled Torry’s advantage. This has been an excellent start to the season for Torrevieja with a virtually new squad, and they are back at the Vicente Garcia stadium this Sunday for a clash against UD Ulicitana who are one of two teams to have no points on the board after four matches of the Preferente season. The match kicks-off at 6.00 pm.

Hucha’s Double

Rojales-based Thader picked up their first away point of the Preferente season, with a draw at a Pinoso side that some observers see as being in the end-ofseason mix. Quinho gave Thader the early lead within

five minutes which they held until six minutes into the second half, when Jahiro got the equaliser. Ruben Sanz with a superb curling freekick past the defensive wall put Thader back ahead in the 74th minute, but just four

minutes later Ramon put Pinoso back on level terms. This weekend Thader entertain FB Redovan, who are yet to record a victory from their first four matches, and just have one point on the board.

Third Division News

Orihuela (pictured before kick-off) maintained their second placing and remained undefeated in the Valencian third division after a one-all draw at Borriol on Sunday. The Borriol keeper Sabater played a blinder to frustrate Orihuela, who equalised through an

Antonio header in the 38th minute, five minutes after Borriol through Mario Gallego took the lead. Orihuela are at home struggling Recambios Colon this Sunday, with a 6.00 pm kickoff. Elche Ilicitano’s ropey start to the season continued with a one-nil defeat at

Olimpic, and they now entertain Novelda, who also have five points to their name. Crevillente, also on five points, will be playing at home to four-placed Torre Levante this weekend, on the back of their previous three-one defeat at Levante Atletico.

Struggling Monte

CD ALMORADI 3 BENFERRI CF 2 Almoradi’s summer signing of ex-Villajoyosa hotshot Hucha is beginning to provide some early dividends as he was on target twice last Sunday. He helped Almoradi to win successive matches in stark contrast to their opening two losses in the Preferente season. The clash against neighbours Benferri saw the home side take an early lead after just two minutes through a

Momu header from a corner, whilst Cristian got the Benferri leveller in the 29th minute with a fine volley. Roberto in the Benferri goal earnt his fee in the second half by frustrating good chances for Hucha and Burgillos within two minutes, but Almoradi got a boost when Benferri got David Moya sent off in the 70th minute for a second yellow card.

Hucha then a had a double strike in the 72nd and 76th minutes, but Benferri stayed competitive and pulled a goal back in the final minute from substitute Alfonso. It’s another neighbouring side for Almoradi this weekend, as they travel to Callosa Deportiva, who are a point in front of them in the table, and who lost three-nil at Elda.

CD MONTESINOS 1 SANTA POLA CF 1 It was a frustrating home return after a 43 year gap for CD Montesinos last Sunday to the Valencian 1st regional level, as they lost a game which saw a Santa Pola CF player red-carded after just 13 minutes, when Vaz was pulled down. It was true that Monte were still missing some key

players, but Vaz was back after the opening day defeat, and he scored 10 minutes later, only for the visitors to level up with an excellent goal from José Ángel in the 37th minute. Vaz and Carlos Ventura saw second half chances go abegging and were punished for not taking their

chances as José Ángel got his second to wrap up a twoone Santa Pola victory. Two defeats out of two matches then for Montesinos, with a trip to Atletico Catral to come this Sunday (5.15 PM kick-off), with Monte’s opponents on one point and a place above them in the table.

The Real Deal

SPORTING LISBON 0 BARCELONA 1

BORUSSIA DORTMUND 1 REAL MADRID 3

An own goal by former Liverpool defender Sebastian Coates was enough to earn Barcelona a Wednesday night Champions League Group B victory away to Sporting Lisbon. Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez both wasted excellent chances in the opening 45 minutes. However, Barca never looked in danger once Coates bundled into his own net while under pressure from Suarez. Lionel Messi made his 593rd Barcelona appearance - tying him third with Carles Puyol on the club's all-time list. Barcelona are top of the group with six points from two games. Afterwards coach Ernesto Valverde rejected claims that his side have become boring in their play. "Everyone is free to say what they want," the coach said in his postgame news conference. "I don't get bored -- especially not when we win. "There are times when you win in an exciting way, scoring lots of goals, and then there are other times when you have to suffer to win. That's how it is.”

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as holders Real Madrid maintained their one hundred percent record Group H of the Champions League by beating Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday night. Ronaldo took his tally to 109 in the competition by converting from Gareth Bale's cutback and lashing in Real's third. Welshman Bale had opened the scoring with a superb volley, while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang netted for Dortmund. "It was perfect," said Real coach Zinedine Zidane. "It was a great game from us. We started well. The first half was brilliant as was the second. We had some difficult moments after the break, but we played them out.” "I am delighted for Ronaldo and Bale, but the whole side worked hard, everyone was brilliant and it was a tremendous game." A worrying moment for Real saw Bale hobble off with five minutes remaining, but the ex-Spurs winger was simply suffering from cramp. La Liga champions Real next come up against Premier League side Tottenham.

LEADERS PEGGED

ELCHE 3 ATLETICO BALEARES 3 A last minute leveller deprived Elche of another league victory, after two strikes within ten minutes from the in-form Sory Kaba appeared to have given another three points for the Ilicitanos. The result means they go down to second in the Segunda Division B table, two points behind Mallorca. It was a cracking Sunday lunchtime clash at the Martínez Valero stadium, with the home side getting the early advantage with a Farrando own-goal deflection off a Sory Kaba shot in the ninth minute. Elche chances went abegging and they literally paid the penalty as Xisco levelled from the spot on the stroke of half time. Elche were positive after the interval and Provencio missed a golden chance to put them back in front, before Atletico took the lead themselves through Gerard Oliva. Both sides kept up the pace, and Sory Kaba’s double in the 63rd and 74th minutes seemed to be decisive before some last minute drama. Primi was sent off for a second yellow card and Gerard Oliva levelled up from the resulting free kick, and the match was drawn. Atletico were a good side, but this was certainly a case of two points dropped by Elche, but a second spot in the table at the end of September would have been taken by every supporter. The Ilicitanos finish off the month with a 5.00 pm kick-off tomorrow afternoon at the Camp Nou de Morvedre against Atletico Saguntino, who’ve have two wins to their name this season.

Don’t Panic Plea

Keeping Ahead

Fran’s Sacked ALAVES 1 REAL MADRID 2

GIRONA 0 BARCELONA 3 Barcelona made it six wins from six to keep them four points clear at the top of La Liga, but they were grateful for two own goals in their first Catalan derby against Girona last Saturday. It was a historic night in Catalunya as Girona faced Barcelona for the first time in La Liga - and their first encounter since 1949 - with the hosts backed by a partisan crowd inside the Estadi Montilivi. Captain Aday Benitez and goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz inadvertently steered the ball into their own net to give Ernesto Valverde's side a two-goal cushion. Luis Suarez sealed the victory after 69 minutes as he latched onto Sergi Roberto's long pass to tuck his shot inside the near post for his second goal of the season on a comfortable outing. Barcelona now host Las Palmas this Sunday.

Zinedine Zidane has called for patience as Real Madrid battle to climb out of an early-season slump. Real bounced back from their shock 1-0 home defeat to Real Betis by edging home at Alaves on Saturday, with Dani Ceballos firing a brace on his La Liga debut for the club. Real still struggled however, coming under intense pressure as Alfonso Pedraza hit a post twice in the second half, to add to Manu Garcia's bullet header. Despite his side's patchy form of just three wins in six league matches this term, Zidane still insists Real are on the rise. "There has to be patience. It's not a brilliant time for us, but we have to accept it," said Zidane. "I'm certain that we'll have a better performance next time. We know that it's difficult wherever we go, Alaves needed the points. They had a good game. Sixth-place Real (and seven points off high-flying Barcelona) now entertain mid-table Espanyol in La Liga this Sunday night.

The ex-Elche coach Fran Escriba (pictured at the weekend) has been shown the door as Villarreal boss on the back of the side’s 4-0 loss to Getafe, who Escriba managed on his departure from Elche. Escriba was dismissed on Monday with Villarreal 14th in La Liga after six games, having also lost to Levante and Real Sociedad, drawn with Espanyol and beaten Real Betis and Alaves. The 52-year-old was appointed in August 2016 and in May renewed his contract to the end of this season, with Villarreal being one of the surprise packages in the last La Liga campaign, but clearly memories in football tend to be on the short side. Escriba's replacement is former B-team boss Javi Calleja, who steps up until the end of the season. Calleja, 39, was part of the Villarreal squad who reached the Champions League semi-finals in 2006.

13:30 16:00 16:00 16:00 16:00 16:00 18:30 Diego Costa has completed his move back to Atletico Madrid from Premier League champions Chelsea. The two clubs agreed terms last week and the 28-year-old Spain international passed his medical (pictured above) on Monday. However, he cannot be registered to play for the La Liga side until January 1 st, when the club's transfer window ban comes to an end. If anybody wants to prise him away from Atletico, the buyout clause is set at a mere 200 million euros. Costa left Atletico for Chelsea in 2014 and scored 59 goals in 120 games appearances for the Blues. He won two Premier League titles and the League Cup with the club, but found himself exiled at Stamford Bridge over the summer. Costa was told by text message that he was not in boss Antonio Conte's plans for this season and he spent much of August in his native Brazil. Problems between Costa and Chelsea surfaced earlier in the year when he was left out of the Chelsea side for an away match at Leicester having been involved in a dispute with a fitness coach. This followed reports of an offer from China that would have been worth over 30 million euros a year in salary. At the time, Chelsea said they had no intention of selling him. Later in that month, Tianjin Quanjian's owner said a bid to sign Costa had been scuppered by new rules over foreign players in the Chinese Super League. Costa, meanwhile used an Instagram post on Tuesday to say his goodbyes to Chelsea fans and staff. He wrote: “Some cycles begin while others end. My cycle began at Chelsea three years ago – three remarkable years in all aspects – and I will never forget it.” "The wonderful fans of such equally admirable club and all team mates, as well as clinical, administrative and logistics staff will remain forever in my mind and in my heart. "I will bring them with me in the certainty that I will always be by their side as well and I’m sure they will understand the reason why this cycle of mine has now ended – because I could not lose faith in myself. "Thank you Chelsea for everything.”

Marquez's fifth win of the season has given him a lead of 16 points in the championship over Andrea Dovizioso, with whom he was tied prior to the weekend. The Honda rider has won four of the last six races, finished second at the Red Bull Ring after a final-lap battle and was among the contenders at Silverstone before his engine failed. Rossi believes his Yamaha team-mate Maverick Vinales and Ducati's Dovizioso, Marquez's main rivals, will struggle to stop him from now on. "I think the championship now, for the opponents, is very difficult," Rossi said. Marquez's Aragon win is a very big step.” Meanwhile Vinales feels that catching Marquez to win this year's MotoGP title will be "impossible" with Yamaha's current level of competitiveness. Vinales scored a second-straight pole position at Aragon, but his championship hopes were dented in Sunday’s race as he finished fourth while his fellowSpaniard Marquez won again. Yamaha rider Vinales is now 28 points behind championship leader Marquez, with a maximum of 100 still available from the remaining four rounds. "Every race that passes, our options become more and more limited.” "We always give the maximum and more, both me and Yamaha. But with the package we have now, it's difficult to think that we can recover (almost) 30 points." Ducati rider Andrea Dovizioso said overhauling Marquez in the riders' standings had become a more "difficult" task after his seventh place finish, but that the result did not spell the end of his title ambitions. The Italian started the Aragon weekend level with Marquez, but is now 16 points behind after he slipped down the order in Sunday's race having run as high as third. "It's not the best, we lose points," said the Italian. "But we know the points we can gain in four races. It's not a drama.” The next race is in Japan on October 10th.

SORRY STOKES

BATTLE OF THE BLUES England cricketer Ben Stokes is said to be "fragile and devastated" and has apologised to cricket chiefs after his arrest on suspicion of assault. Video footage has emerged that allegedly shows him in a brawl near a Bristol nightclub on Monday. The England and Wales Cricket Board has activated its disciplinary procedures with regards to all-rounder Stokes.

BROWN’S BOTHER

England full-back Mike Brown faces an anxious wait to discover the extent of an ankle problem that could see him miss the autumn internationals. Brown got the injury against Wasps in the Aviva Premiership and then aggravated it against Leicester a week later. Eddie Jones' first choice full-back for the autumn series that starts against Australia on November 11th is waiting for the results of a scan that he took on Wednesday.

Premier League champions Chelsea face the sternest test of whether they can retain their title this Saturday evening when free-scoring Manchester City come to Stamford Bridge (6.30 pm kick-off). The champions did the double over Pep Guardiola's side last season, Eden Hazard scoring three times over two games and the Belgian will make just his second Premier League start of the season, after coming through unscathed in Chelsea’s brilliant Champions win at Atletico Madrid. Chelsea were unable to break down a resolute Arsenal side at Stamford Bridge around two weeks ago but have scored 15 goals in the three games around the visit of the Gunners. Such a goal record is only beaten by Guardiola & Co., who already have 21 goals to their name in their six league games with Sergio Aguero, Gabriel Jesus and Raheem

Sterling sharing 15 between them already. For Chelsea, David Luiz is suspended meaning captain Gary Cahill will likely come in despite concerns over his form seeing him lose his place recently. Alvaro Morata was seen limping through the mixed zone after the win over Atletico, and his condition is unclear. Manchester City suffered a setback in midweek with Benjamin Mendy expected to face lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering a knee injury in the 5-0 win over Crystal Palace. The summer signing will now fly to Barcelona to be assessed by a specialist, with Fabian Delph deputising well at Selhurst Park and Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League.

LEWIS ON TOP Formula One championship leader Lewis Hamilton was handed a lucky break in Singapore nearly a fortnight ago, but the Mercedes driver can take little more than the heat and humidity for granted in Malaysia this weekend. Hamilton needs no reminding of just how fickle fortune can be as he returns to the steamy circuit where his 2016 title hopes suffered a blow that ultimately proved too great to overcome. Hamilton has a 28 point advantage over Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel thanks to the German crashing out on the opening lap in Singapore from pole position and gifting him a third successive win. The gap between the two is the biggest it has been all year and Hamilton will not need to win another race this year to clinch his fourth title if he triumphs on Sunday with Vettel lower than second. But the 32-year-old will still be wary of Sepang, hosting its final race before Malaysia drops off the calendar, after last year's engine failure struck while he was leading from pole. "I think it's going to be very close in the next races," said Hamilton, who has won every grand prix since the mid-season break, after celebrating his 60th career victory. "We've just got to stay on our toes and keep trying to extract everything out of this car."
