AIR FARE BATTLE

udget airline Ryanair says that a price war is on the horizon, as it said it could slash prices by up to nine percent on some routes as competition hots up amongst carriers in the next few months. The comment from Europe's largest carrier by passenger numbers follows similar comments about price pressures from Ryanair's rivals in recent weeks. Competition was growing as airlines switched capacity from Turkey and North Africa, Ryanair said, with Spain one of the major beneficiaries. The average Ryanair fare between March and June of this year went up by a percent to just over 40 euros, although Ryanair said this was a blip due to the much stronger Easter trading.

Easter, a peak-time for holidaymakers, fell in April this year, inside Ryanair's reporting period. In 2016, it fell in March. The airline said it expected fares to fall by five percent in the six months to the end of September and by eight percent in the six months to the end of March 2018.

"We expect the pricing environment to remain very competitive", said chief executive Michael O'Leary. EasyJet and Wizz Air have both said that fares will be under pressure this summer. Ryanair executives also repeated warnings of major flight disruptions between the UK and Europe if Brexit

talks fail to agree a bi-lateral deal on flights. The airline has warned it may cancel flights and move operations abroad if there is no agreement well in advance of Brexit. "We need clarity so that we can plan our schedules for 2019," chief financial officer Neil Sorahan told the BBC.

ANTONIO THE HERO

recently -graduated nurse from Murcia University helped to save the life of a British passenger on a flight from Edinburgh to Alicante-Elche airport last Saturday evening. Antonio Cayuela Costa was heading back home to Murcia when he responded to a tannoy call from the captain that a passenger was needed help from any health professional that was on board. Antonio, from Totana, joined forces with another nurse who happened to be on the flight, to help an eld-

erly female Scottish passenger who had suffered an apparent cardiac arrest. “It was difficult to help her in such a confined area”, said Antonio, “but along with the other nurse, we performed a cardio-pulmonory resuscitation, and the passenger’s condition improved”. The captain of the Vueling/Iberia flight asked if the plane needed to make an emergency landing, but with the passenger stabilised, the flight continued for another hour before landing at Alicante-Elche airport, and she was transferred by

ambulance to hospital. The work of Antonio, and the other nurse as well as the flight attendents was rewarded with a round of

applause from the passengers , with Murcia College of Nursing “praising Antonio’s impeccable professionalism”.

Torrevieja's local police have put on show some of the fake goods they have seized from hawkers in the Paseo Juan Aparicio area of the city, as well as in La Mata. Patrols have been stepped up, according to the council, to deal with the sales of bogus items that are mainly targetting unsuspecting tourists, as well as affecting businesses that are

doing everything by the book. The dragnet comes just days after local traders criticised the lack of activity in dealing with illegal hawkers and the goods that they are peddling, with a warning that legitimate stores could have to close because of the unfair competition. Counterfeit shoes, football shirts, and handbags dominated the items seized by Torrevieja's local police.

Keeping Quiet The coastal areas of the Elche municipality, namely La Marina village (pictured) and Arenales del Sol, are quieter this summer than normal, as the council has put the block on most building and demolition work that would disrupt the area for tourists. El Altet is not part of the measure. Based on feedback from residents, the new summer law which runs until the end of August, will see the Elche local police keep an eye out for any transgres-

sions that take in earthwork, demolition, construction, and excavation projects. Some exceptions apply, most notable to roadworks.

Over The Edge Workers with a head for heights are sprucing up some of the cliff faces along the Orihuela Costa. Specially trained staff using harnesses and guide ropes are getting rid of rubbish like plastic and paper that have been thrown over cliff edges by people on the walkways at Aquamarina and La Caleta in Cabo Roig.

Unwelcome Visitors Two North African men were arrested last week in San Pedro del Pinatar and Molina de Segura as part of an on-going Guardia Civil operation against a gang of robbers that are responsible for at least 40 home burglaries in the Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa areas. A total of four people have been arrested over the last few months with two others under investigation, with one of those detained being refused bail. The operation was launched after a series of night-time burglaries were reported to the authorities. Last week’s house raids in the Murcia region uncovered a variety of stolen items including several expensive watches; designer-label handbags; computer laptops; mobile

phones; and SLR cameras. Drugs and drug paraphernalia were also discovered. The crooks struck at night hitting urbanisations and homes that would not have their front door properly locked and would use their own personally-made tools to “slip” the latch to gain entry, with in many cases, the owners sleep-

ing through the incident. Credit card details would be also be taken from some of the addresses and used for them to obtain goods, and if car keys were left around, then the vehicle would be taken as well. The Guardia said that the gang had accumulated around 150 thousands euro from their activities.

Canary Link A new twice-weekly service to the Canary Islands is to be launched this autumn from Alicante-Elche airport by Norwegian Airlines. The budget operator will start the flights to Tenerife North airport on Friday October 27th, with fares kicking in at 27 euros oneway. It will be Norwegian’s first domestic link within Spain from Alicante-Elche airport.

Route Revolt

Traders in Santa Pola are to stage a second demonstration tonight against council plans to increase traffic-free areas in the town, which the business owners claim will badly affect their livelihoods. The fresh protest, organised by the local merchants association will take place this evening (July 28th), starting from El Palmeral park at 9.00 pm and finishing in front of the Town Hall.

The local business community says that the council has not taken account of their views, as well as of residents and tourists in

changing road access around Santa Pola, including some streets being closed off to traffic altogether.

Boat Horror

Pirate Protest Around 200 people, some of whom donned pirate costumes, staged a protest at Cala Ferris in Torrevieja on Sunday over the way they say the area is being neglected by Torrevieja council. The protest (pictures from Objectivo Torrevieja) organised by the Salvemos Lo Ferrís group saw a symbolic beach landing of two kayaks with pirates on

them, who then met up with the other demonstrators who are worried about the state of the beach and the area in general. Berta Tomás Carreño from the group told the Informacion newspaper that Cala Ferris felt abandoned by authorities, with poor maintenance of the beaches, with algae not being cleared and the coves filling up with rub-

bish. Salvemos Lo Ferrís members are planning to send letters to Torrevieja council wanting action, with another group supporter, Loreto Mármol, saying that further protests are planned for next month. Other issues include the state of the childrens playground in Mar Azul and the row over the wall seperating the palm groves and Cala Ferris beach.

A 40-year-old woman and a three-year-old girl were seriously injured when a boat exploded at Santa Pola’s Club Náutico (pictured) on Sunday. Eight members of the same family (five adults and three children) from Elche were on the craft when the explosion happened after 5.00 pm after the engine was started up. The two most seriously injured, namely the woman with 60 percent burns and the child with burns to her arms, were taken to Alicante General Hospital, with the rest of the family going to Elche General Hospital. The boat recently passed a safety inspection, and one theory that the Guardia Civil are working on is that there was a blockage in the fuel pump that caused the explosion.

Gang Detained

Sneaky Peeker A man who put in a secret recording device to record people trying on clothes in a Torrevieja store has been arrested by the Guardia Civil. The unnamed 45-year-old individual from the Murcia region had put in the equipment at a fashion store in the Habaneras shopping centre, and his perverted practice was rumbled by a 14-year-old girl who spotted a device on top of one of the ladies changing rooms that she was using. The teenager told the shop staff about her sighting, and the Guardia were called in, whilst the man obliviously carried on walking around the store, not

Nine members of a infamous gang known as Clan Tote were arrested in Torrevieja on a variety of charges last week, including kidnapping, drug trafficking and the obstruction of justice. Eight of the members are Spanish nationals, with the ninth being German, and all are gypsies, with six males and three females. Three people were released on bail, with the Guardia Civil knowing that he had been rumbled. He was arrested by the Guardia officers and has been charged with a variety of offences including

corruption of a minor and making illegal recordings. His equipment included a Wi-Fi link; a high-end mobile phone; and a video camera.

Beach Death An 81-year-old woman died in the waters of Las Palmeras beach in the Los Narejos area of the Los Alcazares municipality on Monday morning. Swimmers discovered her unconcious in the water, with emergency services called in shortly before 11.00 am, but were unable to revive her. Her nationality was not revealed.

saying they had previously been involved in a variety of violent crimes, with their leader already having been arrested on 17 separate occasions. The gang operated drug dens around Torrevieja, and once they hooked in their customers with free samples of cocaine or heroin, they would make sure they came back for more at a price. They also held some of their clients against

Park Boost Over four million euro is to be invested to improve waste water and storm water treatment in the Rojales area, which will also see an expanded recreational for Recorral park. The investment comes from the Hidraqua water company, who in return for the extra money, will see their franchise with the Rojales council extended to 10 years. The treatment plant at Lo Pepín will get the bulk of the extra money, with improvements slated in for the other four plants at the municipality.

Some extra water will be chanelled to the artificial lakes at Recorral park, where reforestation work will also take place.

their will, after they heard they had made complaints to the Guardia, and would force them to try to retract their complaints. Four addresses were raided by the Guardia in Torrevieja, with money, mobile phones, computers, and cash in addition to drugs and drug paraphernalia being seized. Officers said they also found young children living at the homes in squalid conditions.

Road Robbers The leader of a gang that robbed motorists after staging collisions with them close to service areas on the AP-7 motorway, has been arrested by the National Police in Alicante City. The gang would hire rental cars using false documents and then prang an unsuspecting motorist, forcing them to stop at a service area on the pretext that insurance details would be swapped. The crooks then would look to steal items from their victim’s car and not hesitate to use violence if met with resistance. The police said that they were behind at least eight

A designated sea swimming area has been set up at Torrevieja’s Los Náufragos beach, allowing sports men and women to practice for events like the triathlon. The first area of its kind in Torrevieja, is marked by yellow buoys, is 500 metres long and 15 metres in width, and has been installed by the Recreativos Acuáticos Horadada company at no cost to the council. crimes in Alicante Province, in addition to incidents in the Murcia region and in Valencia Province. The search of the gang leader’s

home found keys to a number of illegally appropriated hire cars, with agents able to recover the vehicles.

Summer Patrols Extra San Javier local police officers are pounding the sandy beat of the Santiago de la Ribera and La Manga areas during the high summer season. Illegal hawkers and pets on beaches are some of the issues that the officers will be looking at, in addition to their increased road petrols throughout the San Javier municipality. That will include targetting pirate taxis operating out of San Javier airport; speeding motorists; and people getting behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

Just The Ticket People caught rummaging through dustbins in the Orihuela council area could soon be hit with a fine of up to 750 euro under new rules set to be introduced by the authority. The council is planning new ordinances which will see around 150 offences punished with fines, which include penalties of up 300 euro for spitting or urinating in a public place, or dumping food on the street, which could attract a fine of 750 euro. The higher end tariff would also be applied to sexist, racist or xenophobic behaviour, as well as motorists throwing out cigarette ends of their car window, in addition to any other material. Taking pets

into play areas and parks will also be fineable offences, as well as street busking. No exact timescale for the

introduction of the new rules has yet been declared, though there will be a public consultation period.

Catalan Concerns

Almost three quarters of Spanish business leaders fear Catalunya's plans for an independence referendum in October could harm the country's economy, according to a survey published in the El Pais newspaper. The central government in Madrid has condemned as illegal plans by the Catalunya administraion to hold a vote on seceding from Spain and, if the yes vote wins, declare independence unilaterally

within 48 hours. Last week, the Spanish government said Catalunya would lose access to some public funds if it used the money to prepare for the unsanctioned plebiscite. Opposition to seceding from Spain rose slightly to 49.4% in June, according to a poll by the regional government's Centre of Opinion Studies, from 48.5% in March. Nationally, 74% of 265 business leaders sur-

veyed believe the Catalan independence movement threatens the Spanish economy, while 43% of those based in Catalonia itself agree, according to the Deloitte survey. Despite concerns about the political deadlock over Catalunya, confidence in Spain’s continued economic growth remains high, according to the poll. Eight out of 10 directors polled said the economy had improved in the first half of the year.

Mystery Deaths

The Guardia Civil have launched an investigation after a British couple were found dead at their Costa del Sol apartment, with the possibility they may have been deceased for up to a fortnight. The bodies of a 71-yearold man and his 80-year-old wife were found in separate rooms last Thursday in Manilva in the Estepona

area of Malaga province. The woman was found lying on her back and fully clothed in a bedroom in the flat, whilst the man’s body was semi-naked and was found next to the sofa in the front room of the top-floor apartment. The bodies were badly decomposed and the alarm was first raised when the couple’s son, back in the UK, called a neighbour in

Manilva because he was concerned he had not been able to contact his parents for some time. The neighbour then raised the alarm. It was not clear if the neighbour entered the flat and found the bodies, or if the gruesome discovery was made by the Guardia. It is understood that no weapon was found in the property

Not Allowed

Health centres across the Valencian region have been sent a reminder that they cannot practise homeopathic medicine. Regional health minister

Carmen Montón said that “good medical practice is linked to evidence”, adding that homeopathic practices along with associated medical products are banned.

Spain’s maritime rescue service says it saved 57 migrants from two boats trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea from Morocco last weekend. The rescue service says that it reached a small boat carrying four Moroccan men in the Strait of Gibraltar after the craft was spotted by the Guardia Civil. The four were in apparent good health and the rescue ship brought them ashore.

A maritime rescue ship intercepted a second boat with 53 migrants of unknown origin near the island of Alboran, where the maritime rescue service has an outpost. Thousands of migrants from Africa attempt the perilous crossing to Europe in small boats that are unfit for the open sea, with landings also taking place in Alicante Province and the Murcia region.

Cancer Donation

Ruby's Golf Society raised a thousand euro to the AECC cancer charity at a recent prize day event held at Ray Bar on the El Raso urbanisation in Guardamar. Ann Bissett, an AECC volunteer at Torrevieja Hospital for the last ten years was there on the day to receive the donation from Diana Davies and the Society and thanked the members for their generosity and

thoughtfulness. The money was raised from a large raffle, an auction and donations in memory of Ivie Davies, a Society member and Courier golf columnist, who passed away with cancer last year. His widow Diana asked that the money be spent on further cancer research, particularly pancreatic cancer that Ivie had died from.

Charity Gift

Over 350 euro was handed over recently to DEBRA, the Butterfly Children charity, by a group called the Mad Hatters who put on a show at the Pint Depot Irish Bar at Blue Lagoon near Villamartin. The donation was presented to Mary Chambers, who is the manager of the DEBRA charity shop at the La Marina urbanisation.

Pets Boost

Over 500 euro was raised for the Pets in Spain charity at a charity fete staged at the end of last month. The event took place at AJ’s Bar on the El Raso urbanisation in Guardamar, with two puppies being adopted by people who came along. Money was also raised for a puppy to get a much needed hernia operation. The annual dog show staged by the animal charity APAH earlier in the month raised just over a thousand euro, as the pets, owners, and visitors had to endure hot temperatures at Pilar de la Horadada’s Carpa Municipal. It was the first time that APAH had staged the show during the summer, and the charity says that will not happen again, as due to the high temperatures, only around of a quarter of the regular turn-out materialised at an indoor venue that came to resembling a hot oven. Despite the low attendance, the charity was delighted with the amount of money raised, and the “Best in Show” award was won by a Spencer (pictured with his owner), a delightful rescue dog owned by a couple who came along to have a stall at the event, and ended up going home with a champion!

Successful Night Torrevieja Stroke Support are better off to the tune of eleven-hundred euro after this month’s sell-out charity night at Quesada Fish & Chips, which saw entertainment provided by Woody & The Peckers. TSS are the only stroke support group in Spain, and help clients from a much wider area than Torrevieja. Consequently, they have now changed their registered name to Stroke Association Spain, and have a new base at Benijofar’s cultural centre. The money raised will be spent on new physiotherapy equipment.

Salvador Exhumed

Forensic experts in Figueres in northern Spain have removed hair, nails and two long bones from Salvador Dali's embalmed remains to find genetic samples for a paternity test - a move that opens the possibility for a woman who says she is the surrealist artist's daughter to claim part of the Dali estate. Officials said that the artist's mummified remains were so well conserved that even his famous moustache had survived the passing of time and remained in "its classic shape of ten past ten," referring to the positions of the hands on a clock. Dali was buried in the Dali Museum Theatre in Figueres, his birthplace, when he died at 84 years old in 1989. The exhumation followed longstanding claims by Pilar Abel, a 61year-old tarot card reader, who says her mother had an affair with Dali in the town. In June, a Madrid judge finally ruled that a DNA test should be performed to find out whether her allegations were true. Forensic experts opened the artist's coffin last week in a sensitive operation that involved using pulleys to lift a one point five tonnne stone slab. Lluis Penuelas Reixach, the secretary general of the Gala Dali Foundation, said Dali's remains - including his moustache - are well conserved, mummified after the embalming process applied 27 years ago. According to judicial authorities, only five people -a judge, three coroners and an assistant- were allowed to oversee the removal of the samples out of respect for the remains and in order to avoid any contamination. Representatives of the foundation managing Dali's estate said that the evidence backing Abel's claims weren't enough to justify the intrusive exhumation, and that it will continue a legal battle to nullify the paternity test. Dali and his Russian wife Gala -whose birth name was Elena Ivanovna Diakonova - had no children of their own, although Gala had a daughter from an earlier marriage to French poet Paul Eluard. . Abel, who for a while made her living by reading tarot cards on local television, was born in Girona, close to Figueres. She has fought for the exhumation because she wants legal proof that the artist was her biological father after an alleged affair between her mother and Dali. If proved right, she could claim one fourth of the painter's estate which is now in the hands of a public foundation, according to her lawyer Enrique Blanquez. There are no

current estimates of the value of that fortune. If she is proved wrong, the Dali foundation will seek financial compensation for the costs of the exhumation. Either way, minimizing the disruption to the museum's

operations and to the rest of Dali's remains is the priority for the foundation managing Dali's estate, according to its secretary. "It's important for Salvador Dali to be returned to rest in the interior of his museum's dome," Penuelas said.

Your pet dog may seldom look happier than when sitting down for a good, long scratch. But a scratching dog may be suffering from depression. One in six trips to British vets are due to skin problems in dogs, with three-quarters of the pet pooches who have dermatological issues also suffering from the blues. Suffering from itchy, uncomfortable skin is one of the biggest causes of stress and anxiety in our pets, according to Dr Anita Patel, one of the UK’s leading veterinary dermatologists. She said: ‘Most people assume that itching and scratching is totally normal dog behaviour. The odd scratch is fine but when you see a dog frequently itching, scratching, nibbling or licking themselves, that’s a strong sign of a skin condition. Left untreated, this can exacerbate the problem and lead to more serious issues.’ ‘What’s not been properly understood previously is how dermatological problems can affect a dog’s wellbeing. What we now know is that skin issues can be one of the biggest causes of depression for dogs. And like people, when a dog is depressed, they lose interest in the things they usually love – like going for a walk, playing, or having a fuss from their owner.’ An estimated one in four dogs suffer from depression or a related emotional disorder, with claims on pet insurance soaring. While this can be caused by being left at home all day, it can also be caused by physical ailments. Animal health company Zoetis analysed more than 80,000 veterinary appointments at more than 200 practices across the UK. The results show itchiness in pets, known as pruritus, is most common around the ears, in 44 per cent of cases, while more than a quarter of appointments are for irritated legs and feet. Experts say consistent itching, scratching, nibbling, biting and licking in dogs is not normal behaviour, as well as a potential telltale sign for depression. Allowing a dog to continue to scratch can lead to skin damage, which may lead to infection which requires antibiotic treatment.

ONIX Onix is a small/medium-sized dog, who is aged around three years. One of the most common causes of pruritis is an allergy to fleas, and the summer is a time at which dogs are most at risk both in the UK and Spain. Depressed dogs often change their eating habits, wolfing down food or leaving it unfinished, while becoming listless and lacking energy or preferring to be left alone. Other signs include refusing water and lying around sleeping all day. However, for dogs already suffering pruritus, combating the condition has historically been difficult because existing treatments are typically steroid-based and can lead to numerous side effects. But a new single injection is targeting the itch signalling in the brain. It works neutralising the protein triggered by the immune system which tells the brain to scratch. Cytopoint has just been granted marketing authorization by the European Commission and is now being launched in the UK and Spain.

Violence Move

Unfair Uber Madrid has asked Spain's anti-trust watchdog to investigate whether Uber's new airport transport service violates fair competition laws. Uber, the mobile ride-hailing service, offers rides from 15 to 29 euro from Madrid's airport to the city centre, whilst the set fare for taxis is 30 euro. Madrid City council said:"Uber's tariffs may violate several articles of the Law of Unfair Competition and consumer rights if they are below the cost of providing the service." Taxi drivers in Spain went on strike in March and May

to protest what they say is unfair competition from Uber and the Madrid-based car service Cabify.

Unions claim these companies flout a law stipulating there should be one private company.

Taking Root The Spanish government has agreed 200 measures and an investment of a billion euro towards the battle against domestic violence. Statistically, violent crime in Spain is among the lowest in the world, but the majority of it happens behind closed doors – in fact, so far this year, 31 women have been murdered by their current or former husbands or boyfriends, double the figure for the whole of 2016.

And that does not include men or women killed by partners or spouses of the same sex, men murdered by their wives or girlfriends, or violent deaths of parents, siblings or offspring. This said, figures show that the overwhelming majority of domestic violence victims – or at least, those who report their ordeal or whose trauma is discovered when it has cost them their lives – continue to be

women, and their perpetrators continue to be men. Opposition parties have deemed the investment of 200 million euro per year for the next five years, to be 'acceptable' and a 'substantial improvement' on previous plans. Some of the measures due to be sorted out include the restructuring of social services and moire help given to victims who are brave enough to come forward.

The Valencian Government is spend almost half a million euro to plant new trees to replace thousands on the Sierra de Orihuela that have been destroyed by the Tomicus disease. Over 70 thousand pine trees have died in recent years, and they will be replaced by more resilient species that should not be hit by the Tomicus beetle. A tender for the project has been advertised and once awarded in the autumn, the repopulating of the trees is expected to take up to three years.

State Sell-Off

Off The Rails

Spanish rail services are set to be disrupted today (Friday) as the main union in the industry, the CGT, has called out its members

today on a one-day strike. The protest is over what the CGT describe as the 'dismantling of the public transport service and jobs in

the industry', adding that employees are suffering from 'a great deal of uncertainty' about the future of their jobs.

Cleaner Costa Spain will look at selling a further stake in the stateowned Bankia later this year, according to the finance minister Luis de Guindos. “We are exploring selling another stake after the summer,” de Guindos said in an interview with the ABC newspaper, estimating that stake would be “around seven percent.” In June, Bankia, Spain’s fourth largest bank,

approved a merger with the BMN bank, which is also partially state owned. The merger and possible sale of more of the government's holding are part of efforts to increase the value of both banks following a combined 24 billion euro bailout at the height of the recession. The government sold a stake in Bankia in 2014 and in December passed a law giving until the end of 2019

to privatize the bank to try to recoup money provided under its rescue in 2012. The minister predicted that the economy would continue growing this year and comfortably meet a three percent growth forecast. Unemployment, currently at 18.8 percent, will fall below 17 percent by the end of the year, de Guindos suggested, and could fall to seven percent by 2022.

Truth Not Rumour

The UK’s ambassador to Spain, Simon Manley, has written an open letter to British nationals living in the country over the latest state of play regarding the Brexit negotiations between the UK and the European Union. It’s a move to allay the usual swirl of unsubstantiated rumours that swirl around local bars, and is part of Manley’s pledge to keep British residents in touch with what is going on. The letter covers important issues of relevance to Britons in Spain, stating the negotiating stance of the UK government, and makes it clear that under the UK position, expats would continue to be entitled to the UK State Pension, and crucially all the upgrades that come with it. On the crucial issue of free healthcare, Manley has stated that the government wants to continue paying the Spanish government for full healthcare access for expats after Brexit, as it does at the moment. Here are some quotes from Manley’s letter:“I know from those conversations that there has been uncertainty for many of you. My teams and I have listened to your concerns about the future, including about your residency status in Spain, the level of your UK pensions, and your access to Spanish health and other social services, and have noted the questions you have about tax, inheritance, right to work and the implications of applying for Spanish nationality.” “Last week, we held constructive and substantive discussions with the European Commission on the bulk of the issues underpinning our respective positions on citizens’ rights. Together we have taken a big step forward. The first key element of the new proposal is residence status and working rights. Until the UK’s exit, EU citizens in the UK will continue to enjoy all the rights they currently have under EU law; they can continue to live and work in the UK just as they do now. The same rights also apply to you, British residents in Spain.” “The second key element is healthcare, pensions, education and access to benefits. It is our intention to treat EU citizens with settled status in the UK in the same way as if they were UK citizens for the purposes of access to education, benefits and pensions. For you, the Government has

announced that the UK will continue to export and up rate the UK State Pension and provide associated healthcare cover within the EU, issues which I know from my conversations over the last year were important to many of you.” “At the moment, those of you who are UK pensioners and resident in Spain access healthcare through the S1 form. This means the UK reimburses Spain the cost of providing medical treatment. After the UK leaves the EU, we want to continue your healthcare entitlements on the same basis. Healthcare in Spain was indeed one of the case studies cited in the

detailed proposals made by the British Government on June 26th”. “Subject to negotiations, we want to continue participating in the European Health Insurance Card scheme meaning EHIC holders continue to benefit from free, or reduced-cost, needs-arising healthcare while on a temporary stay in the EU — and vice versa for EU EHIC holders visiting the UK. We hope the European Commission will agree to this.” The Ambassador’s points reflect the UK’s negotiating position, and are of course subject to being accepted by the EU as part of an overall Brexit deal.

Add the celery, carrots, and 1/2 teaspoon of each salt and pepper. Saute until all the vegetables are soft, about 10 minutes. Add the tomatoes and bay leaves, and simmer uncovered over low heat until the sauce thickens, about one hour. Remove and discard the bay leaf. Season the sauce with more salt and pepper, to taste.

Fill a small pan with water, place over a medium heat and bring to the boil. Meanwhile, halve, deseed and finely chop the pepper. Trim and finely slice the spring onions. Bash the olives and tear out the stones, if needed, then roughly chop. Halve the cherry tomatoes, then place it all into a large bowl and set aside. Peach and Raspberry Custard Tart

55g, plus 2 tbsp unsalted butter, room temperature 55g, plus 2 tbsp icing sugar, sifted 1 hard boiled egg's yolk 1 large egg yolk 1/2 tsp vanilla extract 310g flour, sifted 1/4 tsp salt For the filling 240ml semi-skimmed milk 1 tsp vanilla pod paste 1 tsp finely grated orange zest 3 large egg yolks 60g sugar 3 tbsp cornflour 2 tbsp unsalted butter, room temperature 1 tbsp orange liqueur or brandy, optional 2 peaches, peeled and sliced 210g fresh raspberries 60g apple jam Method Beat the butter and icing sugar together until smooth. Add the flour and salt to the butter mixture and stir until blended. Shape the dough into a disc (it will be very soft), wrap in plastic and chill until firm, about 2 hours. On a lightly floured work surface, gently knead the dough just a little soften, then roll it out to a circle about 12 inches across and 1/4-inch thick. Carefully lift this and line a 9inch removable-bottom fluted tart pan, press it into the bottom and sides and trim away any excess dough. Chill the tart shell for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 180°C Place the chilled tart shell onto

Food & Drink a baking tray and dock the bottom of the pastry with a fork. Bake the tart shell for about 20 minutes, until the edges just begin to brown. Cool the tart shell to room temperature. For the custard filling, bring the all but 2 Tbsp of the milk, the vanilla and the orange zest to just below a simmer over medium heat. Whisk the egg yolks with the sugar, cornstarch and remaining 2 Tbsp of milk in a small bowl. Slowly pour the hot milk into the egg mixture while whisking and then pour the entire mixture back into the pot. Whisk this over medium heat until the custard just comes to a boil, thickens and becomes glossy, about 5 minutes. Have a bowl with butter in it and a strainer on top ready for when the custard has thickened. Remove the pot from the heat and strain the custard into a clean bowl and stir until the butter is melted in. Add the liqueur (if using) and then cover with plastic wrap so that the wrap is directly on the surface of the custard. Cool this to room temperature, then chill for at least 2 hours. To assemble the tart, whisk the custard to soften it and then spread it evenly over the bottom of the cooled tart shell (leave the tart shell in the pan). Arrange the slice peaches and raspberries over the custard. Melt the apple jelly over medium-low heat, whisking until smooth. Brush the peaches and raspberries with the melted apple jelly and chill until ready to serve. Carefully remove the tart from the pan and place on a serving platter before slicing. The tart is best served the day it is made, but can be stored chilled for up to a day.

Stressful Life Experiences Can ‘Age Brain By Four Years,’ Says Study Stressful life experiences such as the death of a child, divorce, or losing a job could age the brain by at least four years, new research suggests. Experts from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in America found 27 stressful events that could be links to poorer cognitive function in later life. Experiencing just one major stressful event early in life can have an impact on later brain health, the study found. Researchers examined data from 1,320 people who underwent a series of neurological tests examining several areas, including memory. A total of 1,232 participants were white and 82 were African American. All had reported stressful experiences over their lifetime. The average age of participants was 58. The study found that African Americans experienced over 60 per cent more stressful events than white people over their lifetimes. The study has not been published in a peer-reviewed

journal but it was presented at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference in London. The study did not look at the risk of dementia, however stressful experiences are known to impact brain function, which can itself lead to dementia in later life. Other research has suggested plausible links between stress and chronic inflammation, which could accelerate the development of dementia.

Dr Maria Carrillo, chief science officer for the Alzheimer's Association, said: "The stressful events that the researchers were focusing on were a large variety... the death of a parent, abuse, loss of a job, loss of a home... poverty, living in a disadvantaged neighbourhood, divorce." She added that for some children, even the act of moving school could be a stressful life event. Dr Doug Brown, director of

Benefits of artificial sweeteners unclear "Artificial sweeteners linked to risk of weight gain," a recent report says. Researchers looking at data gathered in previous studies reported a link between artificial sweeteners – ironically often associated with diet drinks – and weight gain. They also found a link with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and stroke. However, the results of this review should be treated with caution. They are based on seven small, lowquality trials, and 30 cohort studies, which cannot show cause and effect. There was such a wide difference in the

results and methods between the trials that pooling them increases the risk the results could have occurred by chance. The best way to achieve and maintain a healthy weight

and prevent type 2 diabetes is through a combination of a healthy diet, including at least five portions of fruit or vegetables a day, and regular exercise. And the ultimate diet drink? Water.

research and development at the Alzheimer's Society, said: "We know that prolonged stress can have an impact on our health, so it's no surprise that this study indicates stressful life events may also affect our memory and thinking abilities later in life. "However, it remains to be established whether these stressful life events can lead to an increased risk of dementia.” Dr Brown said that while

studying the role of stress is complex, the findings show that “more should be done to support people from disadvantaged communities that are more likely to experience stressful life events”. The 27 stressful life events identified by researchers are: 1) Repeating a year of school 2) Being sent away from home for doing something wrong

3) Father or mother unemployed 4) One or both parents abusing alcohol 5) One or both parents abusing drugs 6) Dropping out of school 7) Getting expelled or suspended from school 8) Failing at school or higher education 9) Getting fired 10) Being unemployed for a long period 11) Losing a parent 12) Parents getting divorced 13) Spouse or partner having an affair 14) Significant difficulties with in-laws 15) Losing a sibling 16) Losing a child 17) Having a child experience a life-threating injury 18) Losing your home to fire, flood or natural disaster 19) Physically assaulted or attacked 20) Sexual assault 21) Serious legal difficulties 22) Being sent to prison 23) Declaring bankruptcy 24) Suffering financial loss or loss of property 25) Going on benefits 26) Entering the armed forces 27) Experiencing combat

Avoid This Food to Lose Weight The number one food responsible for weight gain in most people is wheat. Wheat eaten today is an entirely different plant from biblical times Wheat. Since the mid-1970s, Wheat has been genetically modified multiple times. The consequence is that today's Wheat has extremely high levels of toxic proteins typically found in grains. Gluten is the best known of such toxic proteins. But as bad as gluten is, the other toxic proteins are much worse and are the leading cause of metabolic imbalances that give rise to weight gain. One of such toxic proteins is Lectin. Lectins have been known to cause weight gain for many years, but it is only in the last few years that scientists have been able to trace how it occurs. One of the key con-

trollers of appetite and weight control is a hormone called leptin. Leptin is known as the ' satiety hormone'. When leptin levels increase, the body receives signals to stop eating. But Lectins found in wheat block Leptin, causing a voracious appetite that weight gain. Furthermore, Wheat contains an opiate similar to

heroin or morphine called gliadin. Gliadin stimulates the appetite and causes a craving for Wheat at the same level of addiction as heroin or opium. The addiction is so strong that some people develop withdrawal symptoms when they stop eating wheat. Even worse still is the fact that wheat contains a highly digestible form of

carbohydrate called Amylopectin. Unlike other carbs that start digestion in the stomach, Amylopectin starts getting digested by saliva as soon as it enters the mouth. And by the time it gets to the stomach it has turned to sugar. The rapid digestion of amylopectin in wheat explains why 2 slices of bread are known to raise blood sugar levels more

than 6 teaspoons of sugar. When carbs are digested into sugar, the body produces insulin which drives sugar into the cells for use as an energy source later. But insulin will also convert sugar into fat when sugar levels remain persistently high due to a diet rich in wheat-based foods. Wheat is the staple food of many people and is

found in many foods such as bread, pasta, pastries, cakes, sauces, biscuits, cereals, chocolate and many other foods and snacks. Avoiding wheat is a vital step for those interested in losing weight, and may even be the only action required. As simple as it sounds, it may not be the easiest tasks since wheat is in a lot of foods. Other grains may be safer alternatives and include Rye, Spelt (original wheat) and Corn and rice. But some people may have to avoid grains altogether to achieve weight loss.

Some types of vegetarian diet can raise heart disease risk "Being vegetarian isn't always healthy: Plant-based diet may raise the risk of heart disease," the Daily Mail reports. A US study found a vegetarian diet based on less healthy food

options, such as refined grains, could increase the risk of heart disease. The researchers behind the latest study made the point that many previous diet and health studies

"lumped together" all types of vegetarian diets as plantbased, without considering the actual content of specific diets. And not all plantbased diets are healthy and nutritious.

The researchers looked at data involving 200,000 health workers from the US and tried to analyse any link between diet and coronary heart disease. Overall a high plantbased diet wasn't linked with a clear benefit for heart disease risk compared with a low plant-based/high meatbased diet. When the plantbased diets were broken down and analysed further, the researchers found inter-

esting differences. Those eating a "healthy" plant-based diet high in wholegrains, fruits, vegetables and healthy fats were less likely to get heart disease than people eating "unhealthy" plant-based diets including foods like potatoes, refined grains and sweets. While the study can't rule out the possibility that other health and lifestyle factors such as stress, job type and

education could have influenced the links, the association between unhealthy plant-based diets and heart disease is plausible. The diet advice for vegetarians is the same for everyone else: eat a balanced diet with at least five portions of fruit and vegetables every day, eat less sugar, salt, and saturated fat, and choose wholegrain carbohydrates where possible.

COME AND JOIN US! It’s the perfect time to consider joining Find A Spanish Property as a property associate, as property prices are on the rise, and the market is blossoming. 2016 was a positive year for the real estate market with prices having bottomed out the year before with modest price rises. Things have really kicked in during 2017, in strong contrast to the recession period that kicked in during 2008 and 2009. Official government figures confirm that prices are rising this year, and outside the cities of Madrid and Barcelona, Alicante Province which features the Costa Blanca, and the Murcia region with the Costa Calida tourist area, are two of the biggest areas on mainland Spain which are seeing substantial rises in demand along with price increases. The cranes are back with new homes being built by the coast, and the re-sale market continues to rise, fuelled by low interest rates in Spain. Statistics show that demand for homes from British buyers is still high, despite pessimistic fears last year over the Brexit factor, coupled with purchasers from across Europe, and even further afield. Recent surveys show that the majority of British people living in Spain are aged 65 and over, and website statistics confirm that older British nationals with no mortgage on their UK property are still very much looking at Spain as their area of choice to buy a holiday home, or even somewhere to retire to. It’s a great time to get involved in becoming a seller of real-estate in Spain, especially since most of the cowboys disappeared thanks to the recession nearly a decade ago. We like to think that we’ve played our own small part in helping to seeing them off, by offering an honest business that people are proud to recommend and that we now want to substantially expand.

It is located on the coast and is a vibrant, colourful, busy port and coastal resort. It is a very popular location for Europeans of all nationalities to settle or purchase a holiday home and an ideal destination for a perhaps more relaxed and chilled out family holiday. Dénia is situated approximately 100km from Alicante-Elche airport and an hour’s drive, and just 15km from the popular resort of Jávea, located further south. Spain’s third largest city, Valencia, is located to the north, and Benidorm and Alicante are located to the south. Dénia has excellent communication links being a port and major town along the Mediterranean coast and is easily accessed by car (N332 national road and A7 motorway), boat, air and train. For those who fancy hopping over to the Balearic Islands, you can easily do so by catching a ferry that runs to Ibiza, Palma de Mallorca, Alcudia, Formentera and other locations. Property While the streets in parts of the town are narrow andshaded, the majority of them are wide, elegant and lined full of palm trees. The buildings are heavy and well-constructed, unlike some of the poorer quality constructions in tourist locations further south along the coast. During the boom years, there was a huge demand for real-estate in Dénia, particularly from wealthy Europeans who had money to spend, and who expected the best quality. There are properties of all types in Dénia to suit all preferences, whether a luxury villa in a secluded area or a townhouse or penthouse apartment right in the heart of the town and all the activity. History Dénia’s history dates back to prehistoric times and evidence has been found indicating that the Iberians once settled there thousands of years ago. In the 4th century BC it became a Greek colony, yet was named after the Roman Goddess Diana when the Romans sailed to the coast and made Dénia their home. During the 11th century, towards the end of the Muslim reign over most parts of Spain, it became the capital of a short-lived Muslim kingdom that extended to Ibiza and ran along part of the Valencian coast. The Christians reconquered Déniasome time during the 13th century. Places of interest in Dénia

El Castillo de Dénia One of Dénia’s main attractions is its castle – the Castle of Dénia – which was built during the 11th and 12th centuries. Located right in the centre of the town and high atop a rocky crag, the splendid castle boasts magnificent views of the sea, city and surrounding mountains.

Iglesia de San Antonio

The castle, which is accessed after finding your way through a maze of narrow and windy streets, was the home to the Marquis of Dénia, and it is the most important symbol of Dénia’s heritage. Dénia is blessed with a mild climate and good weather practically all year round. This means that the streets and outside spaces are generally busy all the time with people enjoying themselves and carrying out one activity or another. The town has many stylish cafeterias and bars with outside patios and terraces for those that just want to unwind and watch the world go by with a cool drink or a coffee. For the more active, this is a great place to cycle, walk, or practise any form of outdoors activity. The local beaches are very popular for snorkelling and other water sports. For those that like to explore, here is a list of some of Dénia’s best sites to visit. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

I can scarcely believe that is nearly 20 years since the death of Diana, Princess of Wales in the Paris tunnel car crash, and ITV produced a captivating documentary this week looking at her life as a mother, featuring her two sons William and Harry. “Diana, Our Mother:Her Life and Legacy” was a moving piece of work as it was essentially about two boys that lost their mum far too early. The guys opened up and at times rightly got emotional about a woman that was dubbed “The People’s Princess”. In one moment, William was asked about his last phone conversation hours before she died and said that he remembered her last words to him. There was a telling pause that showed that it was a secret that he would forever keep to himself. We did learn a lot about her fun nature, in addition to the already-documented work that she did with homeless and AIDS charities, plus her campaign to ban landmines. It was as if she had produced the 90

The Wills And Harry Show

minutes herself, and that’s not meant to be a critcism. as I enjoyed every minute of it. There were however some “no-go areas” in terms of talking to the princes, but perhaps the documentary as a whole should somehow have worked them in. For example, there was no mention of Camilla (dubbed the “other woman” by Diana); Diana’s various relationships including James Hewitt or Dodi Fayed; or her infamous Panorama interview with

Martin Bashir. I’d have loved to have known what Wills and Harry felt about those topics(they do like Camilla a lot), but the documentary did push out the boat big time, and I suspect The Queen must have been shuffling uncomfortably as she watched it (you bet she did!). Wills and Harry once again came over as top people cut straight from their mum’s cloth and part of a new modern generation of Royals that have a natural

touch, but they also made it clear, that they do have a strong distrust over certain elements of the media, especially with what Diana went through. 20 years ago in the wake of her death and the mishandled reaction from the Royals, the monarchy was in trouble, but Diana’s legacy is that her sons are making it stronger than ever. What a let down for BBC 2’s new satirical show, The Mash Report, which I actually gave up on after 15 min-

utes because it was devoid of laughs. It’s a TV version of the satirical Daily Mash website which publishes spoof articles, and I suggest it should stay on the internet. Fronted by Nish Kumar, this is clearly an attempt to ape some of the bitingly funny US shows of a similar format, but fails miserably. The lamely fronted spoof newsreading, reports, and correspondants had me hankering for the days of Pamela Stephenson and Mel Smith on Not the Nine

O’Clock News, and Christopher Morris for his work on The Day Today and Brass Eye. I cannot believe this has been commissioned for a ten-week slot, and I can’t wait for the return of Mock the Week in the Thursday slot come September. Amazingly I read a couple of UK reviews that described The Mash Report as “amusing” and “promising”. Were they watching the same programme? If you live in Spain, then I think you should make an effort to learn something about the country’s history. A perfect example is a twopart Michael Portillo-presented series about the Spanish Civil War, using colourised footage from the late thirties. Airing on the Quest satellite channel, this is strongly recommended to learn something about a dreadful event with horrific abuses on both sides, as Germany, Italy, and the Soviet Union almost used it as a training ground for the Second World War, whilst the rest of the world did nothing.

Suranne Jones to star in Gentleman Jack Suranne Jones will lead the cast of Gentleman Jack, in the forthcoming BBC One/HBO drama series created, written and directed by Sally Wainwright. The Bafta award-winning Suranne Jones will star as Anne Lister, the remarkable landowner who - after years of exotic travel and social climbing - returns to Halifax, West Yorkshire in 1832, determined to transform the fate of her faded ancestral home, Shibden Hall. The series will be the latest collaboration between Suranne and Sally, following their previous work together on Dead Clever, Unforgiven, and Scott & Bailey. Suranne Jones says: “I first worked with Sally 10 years ago and I remember the feeling of reading her scripts like it was yesterday. They were scripts for women; fresh, daring and bizarre in a wonderful, modern, fun, complex and challenging way. Now I once again get to speak the words of an almighty talent on a show I know she holds close to her heart. "To have Sally direct me on this feels like I'll finally get to work on a project with her where the connection will be

immediate, exciting and new each day, and we can enjoy that amazing ride together! I'm thrilled to be back at the BBC with this role and to be joining the Lookout Point and HBO family.” To restore Shibden Hall to its former glory, Anne must reopen her coal mines and marry well. But this isn’t just another Regency romance. Charismatic, single-minded, swashbuckling Anne Lister who dressed head-to-foot in black and charmed her way into high society - has no intention of marrying a man. True to her own nature, she plans to marry a woman. And not just any woman: the woman Anne Lister marries must be seriously wealthy. Gentleman Jack will begin filming next year, with further casting to be announced in due course. Suranne will next be seen in the second series of Doctor Foster.

Corrie releases first look picture of Vic on the cobbles

Coronation Street has unveiled the first picture of Vic Reeves on set, ahead of his exciting guest stint on the show. It was announced back in May that the comedian – whose real name is Jim Moir – would be joining the soap on a temporary basis, playing a television presenter called Colin. Colin will arrive in Weatherfield to film with Norris and Mary after they are chosen to make an appearance on his series. But as always on the cob-

bles, it's not long before Colin finds himself embroiled in the lives of other street residents. To mark his first day at Corrie, the soap tweeted: "Welcome to Coronation Street Jim Moir," alongside a picture of him on set. Following suit, Vic/Jim posted a Weatherfield selfie from own Twitter account, saying: "Had a brilliant first day on the cobbles. Everyone was so welcoming." Colin will be on our screens from late summer.

Hi guys,I have a Spanish Lenovo laptop, and have got used to the Spanish Hi Richard, I am not technically minded, I had a Toshiba which was about 3 keyboard. Plus there was a simple way to switch from ESP to ENG, but I years old which crashed, my neighbour bless him, said I can fix that for you always used the ESP. When I got back from holiday there was a message from and then said oooohhh there is no reset button inside and handed back my Lenovo saying that it needed to be updated. I did this and am now in a fix. It laptop, which cannot be repaired at all................it is in such a has assumed that I have a UK keyboard, and so when I press AltGr plus 2 which used mess...............so I was wondering, this may be a stupid question, but can I remove the to give me the at sign for e/mail addresses it doesn’t, and I don’t know where the at sign hard drive and connect the hard drive via a USB cable to another laptop, will this work? is on UK keyboards. It also doesn’t give me the option to switch like it used to. How can Keep up the good work. I get the machine to treat the keyboard as Spanish? Thanks Robin

Hi Robin, I assume that you are using Windows 10? In order to switch between Hi Garry, yes its certainly possible, and pretty easy, to remove the hard drive UK and Spanish keyboards you need to have both loaded within the Windows from your laptop and place it in a ‘caddy’ for use in any USB port as an external settings (this also puts the little ES/EN symbol in the task bar at the bottom of drive, most computer shops will sell the kits to do this for around 25 euro, alterthe screen), in order to add an additional keyboard (you already have the natively, if you are not confident in removing the hard drive from your laptop you English one loaded), click start, settings, time and language, region and language, then should ask a computer technician to supply the caddy and fit the hard drive into it for click on the “English United Kingdom” display language and choose options. From here you. This sort of recycling is a great way of re-using parts of a failed computer. you can add an additional keyboard by clicking on the plus sign. Once complete you will have both of the keyboards you need.

Super Spieth’s Finale

The start was not what anyone expected out of Jordan Spieth, but all that mattered to him was how he finished the Open at Royal Birkdale on Sunday, and that was how he finished the Open. The record books will show that Spieth took a three-shot lead into the final round at Royal Birkdale, closed with a one-under 69 and won by three shots over Matt Kuchar. giving him the third leg of the career Grand Slam. ''Seventeen pars and a birdie would have been fine, too,'' Spieth said, the silver claret jug at his side. ''But there's a lot of roads to get there.'' The road less travelled? This was more like blazing a new trail. Seve Ballesteros won the Open at Royal Lytham & St. Annes by making birdie

from the parking lot. Spieth was spared at Royal Birkdale by making a bogey from the driving range when he was expecting no better than a double bogey. Henrik Stenson finished with four birdies over the last five holes at Royal Troon last year to pull away from Phil Mickelson in one of golf's greatest duels. Trailing for the first time all weekend, Spieth went birdie-eagle-birdie-birdie to overcome his own doubts and win his third major just four days before he turns 24. ''He's a fighter. He's shown that the whole way through his short career,'' Rory McIlroy said. ''He can dig himself out of these holes. He's an absolute star.'' Mc Ilroy’s words sum up Spieth perfectly.

Spain’s dreams of golfing glory on home soil were ended in dramatic fashion as Denmark defeated them on the final hole to win the recent 2017 European Under18 Boys’ Team Championship at La Manga. The venue hosted the prestigious event for the first time in its history, with players from 16 countries gathering at the resort for the chance to succeed France as champions. Spain’s six-man team – who last won the title in 2011 with a side that included one of the new stars of world golf, Jon Rahm – made an impressive start on La Manga Club’s acclaimed South Course and, having qualified for the quarter-finals in first place, they then comfortably beat Ireland and Italy to book their place in the final. Standing in their way for the title was Denmark, who recorded narrow 4-3 victo-

ries over England and Sweden in the last eight and semi-finals, and it was the Scandinavians who started the final the better, taking an early 2-0 advantage to leave Spain having to win four of the final five matches to claim an unlikely win. Cheered on by a patriotic home crowd, the Spanish fought back bravely to level the tie at 3-3 with just one match remaining between Gonzalo Leal and Rasmus Neegaard. Leal holed a courageous putt on the penultimate hole to take the match down the last, but Neegaard held his nerve the best on the par-five 18th hole to close out victory, much to the delight of his teammates. Eduardo Ruiz, director of golf at La Manga Club, said: “It was a pleasure and privilege for La Manga Club to host some of the best young players in European golf, and what an amazing finish.

Froome’s Spanish Bid

Chris Froome has confirmed that he will be looking to make history on the back of his fourth Tour de France triumph at the weekend, by taking part in La Veulta in Spain, which starts on Saturday August 19th. Froome, who has been runner-up three times at the Vuelta, had previously said he wanted to see how he recovered from [the Tour] “and how I back up in training going into the Vuelta if that remains the plan”. However, speaking to Sky Sports on Monday after travelling over to the UK , the 32 year-old said that he would "certainly" be going for his second grand tour of the season where he will attempt to become Britain’s first ever winner of the race. “The Vuelta is a race I love racing,” Froome said. “It’s a vicious race but it’s three weeks that I enjoy. I’ve come second three times now and I’d love to win the Vuelta. To win the Tour and the Vuelta in one year would be absolutely incredible. I’ve got that opportunity now and

45

www.thecourier.es

I’m certainly going to go for it.” Victory would make Froome - who trained to peak late in the Tour, partly with the Vuelta in mind - not only the first Briton ever to win Spain’s national tour but only the third rider in history to manage the Tour-Vuelta double after Jacques Anquetil in 1963 and Bernard Hinault in 1978. Both of those men did it when the race was held in April, though, rather than having just ridden it the Tour. The official Vuelta start list has yet to be announced but Froome’s major challenge for the red jersey is likely to come in the form of some of the riders he has just beaten at the Tour, including Romain Bardet (AG2R), Fabio Aru (Astana), Rigoberto Uran (Cannondale-Drapac) and three-time champion Alberto Contador (Trek-Segafredo), who finished 10th in France but looked surprisingly sprightly in the final week. Tom Dumoulin (Sunweb), defending champion Nairo Quintana (Movistar) and the

injured Murcia rider Alejandro Valverde (also Movistar) won’t be racing, but Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida) and Ilnur Zakarin (Katusha-Alpecin) are also believed to be targeting the Vuelta having ridden the Giro d’Italia in May. While aside from Froome British interest will be piqued by the presence of both Yates twins, Simon and Adam, on the start line in Nimes. The Bury-born Orica-Scott pair have not ridden in the same grand tour since the 2015 Tour de France. On Sunday Simon Yates finished the Tour in seventh overall, winning the white jersey for best young rider 12 months after his brother had won it in finishing fourth. Orica-Scott are planning a three-pronged attacked with Esteban Chaves also due to ride. Pictured below is the official presentation earlier this year of the route which will run between Nimes and Madrid, and will pass through the Murcia region and the Costa Blanca.

Back To Form

Alicante Province veteran tennis player David Ferrer won his first title in 20 months after beating Ukraine's Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-4, 6-4 at Bastad, Sweden at the weeknd. The Jávea-born 35-yearold last won a tournament in Vienna in October 2015, and the victory in Bastad is the 27th of his long career. Seven match points, three aces, four break points out of five saved and just an hour and 26 minutes were enough for Ferrer to net the SkiStar Swedish Open for the third time – something he seems to achieve once every five years, with a win against his compatriot Nicolás Almagro in 2007 and again in 2012 – making him the only non-Swede to achieve a Bastad hat-trick.

Magnus Gustafsson still holds the record with four titles in his home country tournament, whilst Mats Wilander and Björn Börg have each matched Ferrer's three. This season is proving to be the second in the Open Era that at least four players closer to age 40 than 30 have won major titles, as Feliciano López and Víctor Estrella Burgos have also netted ATP victories, along with Switzerland's Roger Federer who scooped up the Wimbledon crown recently. Ferrer, who has a main seafront esplanade named after him in his native Jávea, is not overly confident of getting back to his personal best of ATP world number three because of his age, or even into the top 10 again, but says he is still having fun

trying and fully expects to still be on the circuit next year, at 36. Meanwhile, he soars from world number 46 – which he dropped down to after over a year and a half without winning any titles – up to world number 33, having leapfrogged 13 places with his Bastad victory. Ferrer told reporters in Sweden that he was 'really happy for this win', although admitting he had been 'a little nervous up to 5-1' in the first set and had been 'thinking too much' when he 'had all those match points'. The player, who married last year in the Jávea area and had its mayor José Chulvi among the guests of honour, was said to be on the verge of tears as he was handed his trophy, overcome with the emotion of the moment.

La Liga Dates La Liga has published its full fixture list for the 2017-18 season, but the date for one of the two Clasicos is likely to change. The first Clasico of the La Liga season is scheduled to be at the Bernabeu just before Christmas on Wednesday, December 20th, but as Real Madrid will be in action at the Club World Cup, as Champions League holders, the game will likely be moved. The final of the Club World Cup is scheduled for Dec. 16th in the United Arab Emirates, and La Liga may not force Real Madrid to face Barcelona just four days later. The return at the Camp Nou comes with just more two games to go before the end of the season, on the weekend of May 6th. The two giants are already due to play each other three times before the La Liga season begins -- in the International Champions Cup tomorrow, and in the two-legged Spanish Super Cup at the Camp Nou on August 13th and the Bernabeu on August 16th. Real Madrid begin the defence of their title away to Deportivo La Coruna on the weekend of August 20th, before facing Valencia (h), Levante (h), Real Sociedad (a), Real Betis (h) and Alaves (a). They will finish the campaign at Villarreal on May 20th, while Zinedine Zidane has been given a tough trio of away games in the run-in as they must also go to Sevilla. Barcelona's first game will be against Real Betis at the Camp Nou, and they then play Alaves (a), Espanyol (h), Getafe (a), Eibar (h) and Girona (a). Barca's final game is at home against Sociedad. Atletico Madrid's campaign was due start at home to Girona, but the game will take place at La Liga debutants as work is completed on their new Wanda Metropolitano stadium. They close the 2017-18 season at home to Eibar. The first game at their new ground will be against Malaga on September 17th. Atletico are at home first in the Madrid derby on the weekend of Nov. 19, while Real host on April 8. They play Barcelona at home on Oct. 15, and go to Camp Nou on March 4. Villarreal were also due to host Levante on the opening weekend, but like Atletico they will have the fixture reversed due to works on their Estadio de la Ceramica home.

Suspended Chief

Spanish football federation president Angel Maria Villar, in custody following his arrest last week on corruption charges, was suspended for a year on Tuesday by the country's sports ministry (CSD). The suspension was decided during a meeting of the CSD executive committee in Madrid, after the Spanish administrative sports tribunal opened disciplinary proceedings against Villar. The 67-year-old, a former acting president and current vice president of UEFA, which runs European football, has headed the Spanish federation since 1988. The decision can be reviewed, according to the CSD spokesperson. Villar, who is also a senior vice president of FIFA, and his son Gorka were detained by police on July 18th in a series of early morning raids on federation headquarters and other sites as part of a fraud probe launched last year. Also arrested were the federation's financial vice-president Juan Padron and Ramon Hernandez Baussou, general secretary of the Tenerife federation. They face charges including falsifying documents, misappropriation of funds, collusion and administrative breaches linked to skimming profits from international friendly games and channelling the funds to Gorka Villar. A Madrid court ordered Villar and his son Gorka to be held in custody without bail following their arrest.

Deal Or No Deal

A Real Stayer

Cristiano Ronaldo has told the Marca newspaper that he is not quitting Real Madrid, thus ending weeks of speculation about his future. "To win important trophies with my club and the personal honours last season was brilliant, to do it again would be nice," Ronaldo told Marca on Tuesday in an interview from Shanghai. Ronaldo's declaration of intent to remain at the Bernabeu for the upcoming season comes despite rumours of his departure which surfaced last month in Portuguese newspaper O Globo. Those reports were founded on his apparent feeling of abandonment by his club over his run-in with the Spanish tax authorities. Ronaldo, 32, has been summoned to appear before a judge this Monday to answer four counts of evading 14.7 million euro in taxes. The four-time Ballon d'Or winner has protested his innocence with O Globo saying he had threatened to leave Real over the investigation. Since extending his contract last November until 2021, Ronaldo is the highest paid sports star in the world with 83 million euro, according to Forbes magazine.

Stalemate Again

Elche’s pre-season friendly away to Orihuela on Wednesday evening ended in a goaless stalemate at the Los Arcos stadium, in an exact repeat of what happened last year. Ilicitanos coach Vicente Mir said that it wasn’t the result that mattered but the fact that the players are working hard, creating chances and are doing the right things. Last Saturday, the Ilicitanos recorded a one-nil victory against Crevillente in their meeting at Santa Pola, with Primi scoring in the second half. Elche now go to Yecla in the Murcia region tomorrow evening (Saturday) to play Yeclano Deportivo in a match that will have an 8.30 pm start. The fixture list has been announced for Elche’s campaign in Segunda B, and the Ilicitanos will kick-off their campaign away to Sabadell on Sunday August 20th, with the first home match the following weekend, with Badalona the opponents. Vicente Mir commented that he expected Elche’s first two opponents to be challenging for promotion, and that it would be a tough start, but they would have to take them on sooner or later, so the timing was irrelevent. The final game will be away to the Girona area side Olot on May 13th, before hopefully the Ilicitanos concentrate on their play-off campaign, Fans will have to be patient for the eagerly awaited clashes with Alicante rivals Hercules. The first meeting will be away at the Rico Pérez stadium on December 10th, and then the return fixture ends up being Elche’s final home match of the regular season on May 6th. “We know it will be a hard fought derby against Hercules”, added Mir, “but we hope to be in a good position in the table when we meet play them in December”.

Monte’s Matches Promoted CD Montesinos will open up life in Primera Regional group eight with a trip to Alicante side CD La Vox over the weekend of September 19th. Monte start their home campaign the folllowing weekend with a tough looking fixture against Santa Pola CF, who finished fourth in the group last season. The final match before the Christmas holiday break will see Montesinos entertain old local rivals Racing San Miguel, whilst the return fixture will be the penultimate of the campaign. The last game of the season will be at home to fellow-

promoted side Sporting Guardamar over the first weekend of May.

Thader Friendlies Monaco have denied agreeing a world-record 180 million euro transfer fee with Real Madrid for Kylian Mbappe. The sports newspaper Marca reported this week that Real will pay an initial 150 million euro for Mbappe with a further 30 million euro in bonuses. The reported fee would eclipse the 110 million euro fee that Manchester United paid to Juventus for Paul Pogba last summer. The 18-year-old forward scored 26 goals and added eight assists last season as Monaco were crowned Ligue 1 champions and advanced to the last four of the Champions League. Real Madrid head coach Zinedine Zidane gave a glowing assessment of his young compatriot when asked about him last week. "He is very good," Zidane said. "He is a talent, he is 18 years old, he has personality.” "He is very good, very good as a player and has shown it all year."

CD Thader started their pre-season training this week, with the Rojalesbased Preferente side announcing a list of their friendly matches for August. The side will entertain FC Pinatar on Saturday August 5th, and then entertain CF Celtic Elche on the Wednesday evening. A premium home friendly against third division Orihuela has been arranged for August 12th, and then a Wednesday clash, also at home, against Sporting Guardamar CF. Other matches arranged

for next month include fixtures against CFI Alicante, UD Abanilla, and Racing San Miguel CF. Full details of the times of the games will be released nearer the time.

Backdoor Deal

Barcelona have reportedly agreed personal terms with Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho, though the Reds reportedly are said to be in the dark. The 25-year-old, who extended his contract with the Reds in January, is apparently the Blaugrana's main transfer target for this summer window. According to Catalan radio station RAC1 and as reported by the AS newspaper, Barca have already agreed personal terms with the player and now need to negotiate a fee with Liverpool. It has been claimed that Barca are prepared to offer up to 90 million euro for the Brazilian, but it remains to be seen whether or not Liverpool will sell. Reds boss Jurgen Klopp recently ruled out a transfer for one of his main stars at Anfield. "That's an interesting question, because you know my answer before," Klopp said during Liverpool's tour of Asia, in an interview with Sky Sports.. "I have nothing to say about this, I'm sorry but obviously these stories are without my saying, so why should I disturb this process?” "Do whatever you want with this news, I am not interested. But what I can say, keeping the group together would make sense."

Pep Swung It

Manchester City's new 30 million euro signing, Danilo, has admitted that it "wasn't difficult" to turn down Chelsea in favour of a move to the Etihad Stadium. The Blues had appeared to be the favourites sign the Brazilian right-back from Real Madrid, but saw their approach hijacked by City. And Danilo has revealed that the words of Pep Guardiola inspired him to join City over their Premier League rivals. "It wasn't a difficult decision to choose City over Chelsea," he said, quoted by the Daily Mail. The moment City called me and Pep called me, I knew what I had to do. Pep's words motivated me to be ready for this. "It was very fast. I was training with Real Madrid and Pep called me and I was very motivated to make this change and start to work with him.” "Zidane tried to make me stay but I was sure I needed to change. I needed to think a bit more about myself and find a place where I had more options." He added: "I have no doubt we can win the Champions League, that’s why I chose this team. In all the teams I played for in my life, the objectives have always been the same.” "I’m going to try my best to adapt as soon as possible. I see the potential in this side and I am going to do my best.”

Nelson’s Reason

Good Squalas

Nelson Semedo claims Barcelona legend Ronaldinho was a big factor in his decision to join the club earlier this month. The Portuguese international became the Catalans' third signing of the summer transfer window following a 35 million euro move from Benfica. The 23-year-old, who will likely be the new firstchoice right-back at the Nou Camp, says he was a fan of Ronaldinho from his five-year spell at the club from 2003 to 2008. The Brazilian, who won two La Liga titles and a Champions League with La Blaugrana, also seems to be one of the reasons Semedo always liked Barcelona in his younger days. "I've been a Barça fan since I was little, I always liked them," Semedo told El Mundo Deportivo. "It was Ronaldinho that influenced me because back then I was playing as an attacking midfielder and he was, no, he is my idol. I watched all his games and he had a massive influence on me." "At the moment, Barcelona is one of the best sides in the world. Lionel Messi and Neymar are otherworldly players, but the whole team has great quality." Semedo rose to prominence for Benfica in 2015 following the departure of Maxi Pereira but has had to adapt since his move to Spain. However, Semedo claims the adaptation process has been going well as he tests himself with the "best team in the world". "The first few days have been very good," Semedo explained. "My adaptation is going well because of the help of my team-mates and everything has been very easy." "I came to the best team in the world. It's a side with a great structure and has players of the highest level." One of the big talking points is whether Neymar will leave Barcelona, with Paris Saint-Germain reportedly closing in on a move. However, Semedo is willing to bet on him staying. "I hope (Neymar stays)," Semedo added. "He's a great player and for me, it's a pleasure to be able to speak with him, due to the fact that we both speak Portuguese." "I haven't asked him (if he will stay), but I am sure that he will. I would bet on him remaining at Barca."

New Signings

CD Thader of Rojales returned to pre-season training this week ahead of a number of friendly matches (see over on page 46). Thader’s sporting director Adrián took the opportunity to have a picture taken with the club’s new signings for the new Preferente campaign. Pictured from left to right are Nino, Piti, Adrián, May, Javi, and Millán.

A team from the San Javier Squalas made the long journey to Andalucia last weekend to take part in 7th beach rugby tournament to be staged at Punta Umbria on the Huelva coast. 32 teams took part in the event which was saw Sevillabased teams take the men’s and women’s title, namely Cajasol Ciencias and the Cocodrilas. The Cocodrilas (Crocodiles) beat the San Javier Squalas in the first round of matches, but the Squalas impressed well in their performances, and have set themselves up nicely for their home tournament next weekend (see below).

Sevens Time

The San Fulgencio-based Costa Cobras rugby team (pictured) are fielding a men’s side in next weekend’s popular Mar Menor sevens event organised by the San Javier Squalos (poster below). After sessions at La Marina beach, the Cobras are back training at the San Fulgencio sports stadium every Monday and Wednesday evening at 8.00 pm, with the junior sessions starting at 6.00 pm. Besides the Cobras in the men’s event at Santiago de la Ribera, the Squalos, XV Rugby Murcia, and CRUC Cartagena will be represented. The women’s section will feature the Squalas, XV Rugby Murcia and CRUC as well, and there are under-16 and under-14 competitions as well.

VILLAR QUITS

Suspended Spanish Football Federation president Angel Maria Villar has resigned from his roles as vice-president of Uefa and Fifa. He and his son Gorka were arrested last week as part of a corruption investigation (more on page 46). "Villar will no longer have any official functions at our organisation," Uefa said on Thursday. Meanwhile Juan Luis Larrea has been named as interim president of the Spanish Federation.

CONTE’S DOUBT

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has questioned Tottenham's ambition, suggesting they have lower expectations than their Premier League title rivals. Spurs chairman Daniel Levy this week defended a lack of signings and railed against "unsustainable" spending. They were runners up to Chelsea in the Premier League last season. “If Spurs don't win the title, it's not a tragedy," said Conte.

LEWIS ON A ROLL

This Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix marks the teams’ last chance to bag a big result before Formula 1’s traditional summer break - and things couldn’t be more finely poised. With just a single point separating the leading title contenders – Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel and Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton – there is everything to play for in Budapest. The last round at Silverstone was a huge blow to Ferrari, to be so far off Mercedes’ pace and to suffer tyre problems which cost Sebastian Vettel a podium finish and all but eradicated his points lead. Heading into Hungary, he has 177 points to Lewis Hamilton’s 176. Notably, Hamilton - winner here at the Hungaroring last year - will be aiming to equal Michael Schumacher’s record of 68 pole positions this weekend.

“Our drivers have been one of our biggest strengths so far,” said Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff. “Lewis has delivered some consummate performances this year, in China, Canada and Silverstone in particular. The win in front of his home crowd was emotionally charged and I am sure he is carrying that energy with him right now.” “As we see almost each weekend, he is equalling and matching new records in our sport's history - and building a legacy as one of the sport's greatest drivers. Budapest has always been a good circuit for him but, as he knows better than anybody else, the past is no guarantee of future performance. It's all about the right preparation, hard work and delivering on the day.”

CARL’S SHOWDOWN Carl Frampton has said defeat by Mexican Andres Gutierrez in Saturday's WBC world featherweight title eliminator at the SSE Arena could prove "career-ending" (10.45 pm, live on Channel Five). Frampton, 30, has not fought since his loss to Leo Santa Cruz in their WBA featherweight title fight in January. Gutierrez, 24, has lost one of his 35 bouts and has earned 24 knockout wins. "What happens if I lose this fight? There is no future," said Frampton, also a previous IBF world super-bantamweight champion.

Santa Cruz's victory over the Northern Irishman in Las Vegas six months ago avenged Frampton's triumph in New York last July. Despite that first career defeat, Frampton believes he can re-establish himself as the planet's best featherweight. "I lost a close fight with an under-par performance to a three-weight world champion.” "If I'm performing, I still believe I'm the best featherweight in the world and I believe I can beat guys like Leo Santa Cruz.”
