BRIT IN DOG ARREST

49-year-old British dog walker has been arrested by the Guardia Civil, in the Rojales area, after two unmuzzled dogs were left to roam without a lead and ended up biting the face of a 50-year-old woman in a Quesada park. He has been charged with crimes of serious recklessness and leaving the scene. The woman was knocked down by the free dogs, and she was bit in the face so badly that she needed urgent facial surgery. Rather than helping her, the man

fled the park with the two dogs. The Guardia Civil in Almoradi launched an investigation to discover who the owner was, with local residents identifying a British couple as the owner of the animals. When interviewed about what happened, they said that they knew nothing about the incident as they had employed a dog walker to exercise their pets. The walker was tracked down and though in possession of a license for poten-

hree Orihuela councillors have made pledges for the next year over improvements to the Orihuela Costa area, with a focus on waste collection and the state of the local beaches. The announcements come in the wake of continued criticism from local groups over waste collection in parts of the area, with FAOC (Federation of Associations of Orihuela Costa) releasing pictures of uncollected rubbish strewn next to Cala Capitán beach (pictured) or on Playa Flamenca’s Calle Luis Gordillo (pictured right). Cleaning councillor, and newly elected Partido Popular president in Orihuela, Dámaso Aparicio, repeated previous announcements over the provision of more waste containers for waste disposal and recycling during the summer, along with extra

manpower. He added that more money is being spent, to remove seaweed from local beaches. The Courier has also received a number of recent complaints over the state of rubbish collection on the Orihuela Costa, including one reader Jim McClaren saying that some paths and adjoining areas in La Zenia “are in a disgusting state”, with dog dirt also aggravating the problem. New cabins for the beach rescue services and better

disabled facilities are being promised by beaches and coastal councillor Luisa Boné. She said access improvements would be made and extra toilets for disabled people would be provided, in addition to providing more wheelchairs to help visitors get to the water. Work has also been pledged to make Cala Cerrada more accessible, whilst the cabins for the lifeguards and emergency services will feature a treatment room, a rest area, and

toilets. Tourist councillor Sofía Álvarez talked about a commitment to improve signposting of the beaches, and also about the production of a new tourist guide for the Orihuela Costa (more on page four). The annual inspections have also taken place at the beaches of Punta Prima, Cala Mosca, Cala Estaca, Glea and Mil Palmeras, ahead of them being granted “Q” quality status for the 2018 summer season.

Three fugitives on the run from their countries were arrested by the National Police in Alicante Province last week. Officers detained a 40year-old British man in the Guardamar area who is wanted on child sex abuse charges in the London area, and had him transferred to Madrid’s National Court for extradition back to the UK. A 40-year-old Hungarian was stopped at AlicanteElche airport after the National Police executed a European Arrest Warrant on charges of drug trafficking,

and also took him for an appearance at the National Court. Officers were tipped off about a 33-year-old Irish man, wanted by UK authorities for a violent assault dating back to October 2004. He was detained on the Orihuela Costa before being shipped off for his Madrid extradition hearing. The National Police in Alicante Province has so far executed 16 international arrest warrants this year, with a spokesman saying that fugitives “may run, but they cannot hide”.

Officer Shortage Alicante Province is under-staffed with Guardia Civil and National Police officers according to the national government in Madrid. The revelation came in a parliamentary replay in Congress in response to a call for figures from an opposition PSOE socialist member, Antonio Trevín. The figures put the total in the area at four and a half thousand, which is 500 short of what it should be, with a deficit of 300 National Police agents, and 200 Guardia officers. Alicante Province comes tenth in the national under-

staffing league, with the Madrid area down by almost three thousand officers. Critics say that the Alicante Province figures are down to annual cuts over a number of years, which includes the non-replacing of retiring officers.

77-year-old Charlie Bevill-Warcup was found guilty by a jury in Elche last week of murdering his partner Rosie Broadwell at his San Miguel de Salinas home in September 2014. The jurors voted seven to two in favour of the homicide conviction, and did not accept Bevill-Warcup's changed story that Mrs.Broadwell had fallen in his kitchen in an accident. after they got into a row, and that she banged her head on the kitchen counter. They took the view that he deliberately hit her many times with a walking stick when she lay on the ground, and then dumped the body two days later off the CV-940 road by the AP7 exit in the Algorfa municipality.

Bevill-Warcup then went through the pretence that Mrs. Broadwell had gone missing whilst she went shopping in her home area of Quesada. and he made a report to that effect to the Guardia Civil, after being pressurised to do so by her daughter Cheryl. In March 2015, the 77year-old British pensioner went to the Guardia to confess to what he had done, but gave a different account for the benefit of the Alicante Provincial Court jury last week. They rejected his testimony that the tragic events were fuelled by a mental disorder and the drinking of alcohol. A seperate sentencing hearing is to be held, with prosecutors wanting BevillWarcup to serve 19 years behind bars.

Big Spenders

Big rises in tourists heading to the Costa Blanca is meaning a large rise in money going through local tills. Official figures say there has been a 20 percent hike in tourist spending over the first five months of 2017. Two point seven billion euro have been spent so far

this year in the Valencia region according to the National Institute of Statistics, with UK visitors clocked at spending 868 million euro through till the end of May. That’s a rise of 21 percent in British spending comparred to same period last year.

A 78-year-old moped rider from Dolores was killed in a collision with a car in Catral on Sunday lunchtime. The incident happened at the junction of the Almoradí and Arroba de Hornos roads, known locally as the Camino del Saladar. The car sped off, with the emergency services pronouncing the male moped rider dead at the scene, with the Guardia Civil eventually tracking down the 29-yearold fleeing motorist at his Almoradi home.

Enough Is Enough

Torrevieja shop owners say not enough is being done to stop illegal street hawkers operating in the municipality, and have called on the council to get tough on the law breakers. David Sánchez (pictured) of the Apymeco traders association says that some of his members could be put of business if the illegal and tax free sales of the so-called “Lookie Lookie Men” are allowed to continue. He called on all traders in the Torrevieja and La Mata areas to report any hawkers immediately to the police. The Barrio del Acequión traders spokesperson Noelia Lozano told the

Informacion newspaper that drastic action needed to be taken against the hawkers that were damaging businesses during the high season. Though the local police patrol the Paseo de Juan Aparicio and Cura beach areas, the illegal salesmen are popping up elsewhere, and Informacion reports that they appear to be getting away with it because the courts are lenient on them even if they are selling fake goods, because the overall amounts are comparatively small in value. Complaints about the hawkers have also appeared on the Orihuela Costa, with The Courier recently problems during the evening on the streets in Cabo Roig.

Developers have been told to knock down part of the redeveloped Arenales hotel in Arenales de Sol, as well as being hit with an 80 thousand euro fine. Work on turning the dilapidated structure into a luxury hotel and spa by the Princesol company was stopped 14 months ago on the grounds that unautho-

rised demolition work was going on. The national government says that the area of permitted construction work has been exceeded and has violated coastal laws. They've also ordered twothirds of the "skeleton" of the new building to be demolished. Princesol says that

they've been taken aback by the news and they are considering an appeal as they do not believe that they've done anything wrong. Last year protestors took to the Arenales streets to call for the suspended work to be reinstated saying that it would help to boost the economy of the seaside village.

Vile Schoolkids Two children have been given probation and 40 hours of community work orders after an Alicante court found them guilty of harassing a San Miguel de Salinas teacher. They have also been ordered to pay five thousand euros in compensation, with a teenage girl liable for 70 percent of the figure as she was viewed as the main instigator of the actions. The events dated back to 2013 and 2014, with the pupils making threatening phone calls to the teacher, including the girl calling over 30 times. Verbal abuse, slanderous remarks, and the painting of graffiti in the school car park, as well as on the school building, and across the teacher's car, were some of the things that happened. Words like paedophile were daubed in those incidents.

When the teacher went to file a report to the Guardia Civil about the vandalism to the car, the girl kept walking in and out of the Guardia offices, shouting abuse until she was spotted by an officer and ran away. The teacher had been previously the victim of a

Over 240 Torrevieja businesses will be taking part in a big push during the high tourist season to boost still further the area's strong commitment to glass recycling. 60 new containers are to made available in the area, along with extra recycling collection points, with

Torrevieja's figures for last year putting the city nearly three times above the national average for glass recycling. Pictured are Torrevieja councillors Fanny Serrano and Manuela Osuna, with Roberto Fuentes, from the national non-profit Ecovidrio recycling company.

smear campaign dating back to 2011. It also involved the same female child, who made a series of abusive posts on Facebook, but the teacher eventually dropped legal action on the back of having to receive medical treatment for stress and depression

More local police officers and civil protection volunteers (pictured) are going to be patrolling the beaches and coastal areas of the Pilar de la Horadada municipality during the tourist season, according to Pilar's public safety councillor, José Tomás Saura. Tomás Saura said that the

increased police presence will help to boost security for visitors and residents alike, and they will also take action against illegal street hawkers. They will also be making sure that bars and restaurants are following the rules over how much terrace area they can take, and, n doubt, noise.

Helpful App A new mobile phone application has been launched that will allow visitors to the Mar Menor the instant facility to let authorities know about any environmental problems. Murcia's tourist minister Javier Celdrán(pictured holding the tablet) says that 'CONECTAmbiental' allows users to send details of any incident, like poor water quality at beaches via a simple on-line form. The app features all kinds of details about the Mar Menor beaches including

weather and UV index information, along with bathing conditions and the latest status of the red and yellow

flags. If the app is a success, it will be expanded to take in other parts of the Murcia region.

The strengthening of resources kicks in this Saturday (July 15th), and will run until-September, and also features civil protection volunteers patrolling in two vehicles to deal with any forest fires, as well as taking part in preventative measures to stop them happening in the first place

Flags Ignored

Costa Guide Orihuela council has published a tourist information guide to the Orihuela Costa. Produced by the authority’s tourist department, the leaflet was officially presented by tourist councillor Sofía Álvarez (pictured right), and beaches councillor Luisa Boné. The guide features lists of all the services available in the area with useful phone numbers and locations of facilities like public toilets and lifts for disabled visitors.

A French man and his son were rescued by Cruz Roja lifeguards on Friday as they ignored red flag warnings not to go into the sea at the central beach in Guardamar (pictured). They did not require medical attention ,but did suffer from shock after their experience. Meanwhile in a bizarre incident at El Campello beach in Alicante, a 53-year-

old local resident was arrested for refusing to get out of the water when the red flags were flying. By-standers called the authorities concerned that somebody might be in trouble, but his response was to make rude gestures at the police, and even take his swimming trunks off and put them on his head. He then came on shore and pushed the lifeguards

out of the way, before proceeding to assault two local police officers, who he decided to punch and bite. The antics attracted a crowd of around 50 people, who witnessed the irate swimmer carted away by the police to face a string of charges including assault, disobedience, attempted murder, making death threats, and resisting arrest.

Healthy Holiday

Health centres in the Santa Pola area will have increased staffing to cope with the tourist demand over the summer period. More doctors and nurses

are being allocated to facilities across the municipality including the main centre in Santa Pola (pictured) and the facility at Gran Alacant for the rest of the

month and August. A doctor is also being assigned to treat patients on Tabarca island in addition to the nurse that is based there all year

Short Break

Bigastro local police got a break from their routine last week when they were called into a house in the town that had been invaded by bats. Dozens of bats had

formed a colony on the outside of the building, with a number finding their way indoors. 30 were collected up by police officers and were then released into the

wild. The home owner has been advised to call a specialist company to make sure that the unexpected An Alicante-Elche airportguests don't make a return bound flight from Glasgow had to make an emergency landing on Saturday before it even left UK airspace to get rid of three rowdy passengers.

Spare A Copper

The Thomson flight to Alicante-Elche airport was delayed by 90 minutes as it landed at Bristol airport amid concerns over the behaviour of three men. A fleet of police vehicles swarmed on

to the concourse to meet the plane and the trio were hauled off and arrested. Images taken from an adjacent plane showed the men sitting on the floor as officers quizzed them.

Rental Push

The left-wing Compromis political party has called on Orihuela council to increase the number of local police officers across the municipality. Local Compormis secretary Martin Borislavov says

that only one officer was on duty to cover the Orihuela Costa on a recent Sunday, and that there seemed to be no logic that at a busy time of year for tourism, fewer officers seemed to be working in a key part of the

Orihuela region. His criticism also stretched to inland areas of the Orihuela municipality, with Borislavov saying that he has had complaints from rural areas over the poor response times to calls to the local police.

The Murcia government and the Tax Agency are combing through internet sites offering holiday lets in the region, which are unregistered with no tax being paid on income that was raised through them. Twelve-hundred holiday lets were registered by Murcia tourist inspectors last year, with the La Manga area a key rental region. The Tax Agency said that they carried out action in regard to eight thousand undeclared rental properties across Spain last year.

Acrobat Death

Tributes have been paid to a British-based acrobat who fell to his death at a Madrid rock festival. Aerial dancer Pedro Aunion Monroy plunged 100ft in front of thousands of music fans at the Mad Cool event in the capital. Paramedics attempted to save the life of the 42year-old performer, but he died at the scene. On Saturday a family member said Mr Monroy had been "doing what he

liked most, a show at Mad Cool", adding: "We're devastated." Mr Monroy from Portslade in Sussex, trained in the schools of Pilar López, Cristina Rota and in the Royal Conservatory of Dance, and had his own performance company, In Fact Aerial Dance, based in Brixton, London. The festival organisers did not initially inform the audience or the bands the

fall was fatal because of "security reasons" and around 40 minutes after, Green Day took to the stage for their set, oblivious to what happened. Organisers of the Mad Cool festival defended their decision to carry on with the first performance, citing "mandatory" security measures. It is unclear at this stage what happened with Mr Monroy's equipment which caused him to fall.

14 Italians ran away from a Pamplona restaurant leaving the owner with an unpaid bill of over 600 euro, but were caught by the police, and ordered to pay a 10 percent tip into the bargain.

The northern town, which has been staging the annual bull runs, has been full of tourists, leading the group to feel they could get away without being paying, but that wasn’t the case.

Police officers quickly found the group on the town’s streets and forced them to settle the bill, plus the gratuity on top as a way of apologising to the restaurant owners.

Home Alone

The Guardia Civil in northern Spain have found a mummified body of a woman. The 50-year-old's body was discovered inside the apartment that she had rented in Culleredo in Galicia. It was reported that the body seemed to have dried out naturally and neighbours

did not detect any kind of smell coming out of the woman's apartment over the years. According to reports, the woman was last seen by her neighbours some four years ago. One of her neighbours said that the woman was suffering from depression after her mother's death.

Olive Fears

The first case of the destructive bacterium Xylella fastidiosa has been found in mainland Spain in Alicante Province, posing a serious threat to crops like olives. It was discovered infecting an almond tree in Guadalest, with Xylella having the potential to affect over 300 types of plants. In Spain, which has 350 million olive trees accounting for half of the world's olive oil production, there are fears from people in the industry that the spread of Xylella could be disastrous. “We should try not to overdramatise, but the situation is worrying,” Eduardo López, a spokesman for the COAG farmers union told the digital newspaper El Confidencial. Mr López and other repre-

sentatives of the farming community want authorities to announce a compensation scheme now, before the disease spreads further and the painful preventive uprooting of trees begins in earnest. The Valencian regional government has followed European Union guidelines when faced by the destructive bacterium, clearing all plants in a 100-metre radius (cordon pictured) around a dozen affected almond trees in Guadalest. But there is no agreement on compensation, with the standard maximum offered by Valencia of 7,429€ for each hectare lost falling well short of the maximum demanded by growers of 27,000€.

The Dolores-based SAT Animal Rescue charity has started a big final push to build a much-needed rescue centre, as the current premises are far too cramped for the dogs that are being looked after. With that in mind, SAT has relaunched their Buy A Brick fund to help make the new building finally become a reality. Predator Strikes

A British woman was threatened with a screwdriver and attacked by a serial attacker in the resort of Fuengirola on the Costa del Sol. Driving a white van, the man attacked the woman last week, before holding a screwdriver to her neck and told her that she would not be the first person he had

killed if she resisted. He then forced her to perform sex acts on him before he left in his vehicle. The offender targeted the woman, said to be 19, as she got into her car to drive home after leaving work in Fuengirola. Sources close to the case said he attacked her after getting into the back seat of

the car and threatening her with the screwdriver as she turned the engine on. The National Police have linked the attack to two others over the past month which have also taken place in Fuengirola because the modus operandi and the descriptions the victims gave of the man who targeted them were identical.

replace a 21 month jail sentence with a fine over his tax evasion case. Messi and his father had been convicted of hiding image rights royalties in offshore accounts rather than declaring them to the

tax authorities. Messi will now pay a fine of a quarter of a million euro, which if newspaper reports are correct, isn't even half of what he will paid per week on his new contract with Barcelona.

Despite the recent hot weather, sooner or later we will get hit by a storm, with the associated thunder and lightening that could frighten your dog. A Gota Fria over here in Spain may be a spectacular sight, but it can bring problems to your pet. Vets don't know all the triggers but suspect that dogs are set off by some combination of wind, thunder, lightning, barometric pressure changes, static electricity, and low-frequency rumbles preceding a storm that humans can't hear. According to one theory, dogs experience painful shocks from static buildup before the storm. Here are some tips to help them through:-

up to date in case your pet gets lost, and of course micro chipping is the law here in Spain.

Stay Calm

Talk to your vet about getting your dog used to the sound of thunder. You could buy a CD of storm sounds which you could play around your home and play with your pet whilst the disk is playing. This should teach them not to fear the sound of thunder and get them used to hearing it. If your pet is getting too stressed, stop the CD immediately.

If you remain calm and try to act normal, it will help your dog to not get as stressed. Animals can pick up how you are feeling so try not to act overly nervous or worried. Just keep reassuring your pets by staying close and giving them the occasional stroke.

Try medication For dogs that suffer reoccurring stress every time a storm is near, it might be time to discuss medication with your local vet. Medication can be prescribed for dogs to keep them calm. Plan Ahead

A Safe Place You dog might try to hide from the storm whether that's under a bed or behind a sofa, but this perfectly normal. Let them find a space where they feel comfortable and safe to prevent them getting anymore distressed than they are. Safe and Secure

She was adopted, but sadly her new owner returned her back to APAH, so she is back living in the kennels. To arrange to meet Keira, please telephone either on 630 422 563 or 616 210 850.

This applies especially to outdoor pets who may get scared by the loud thunder and lightning. Make sure you all your gates and fences are secure on your patio or garden and that there is no way your pet could escape. The last thing you want to be doing is searching for your scared and vulnerable pet in a storm. Identification If your pet does manage to escape and someone does find him/her, a pet that is micro chipped is much more easily returned to its owner. So make sure your contact details are

Improvement Query

A local environmental group is asking why 400 thousand euros is being spent to improve a stretch of barely used road in the Sierra Escalona. The Friends of Sierra Escalona say that they’ve not been able to get a satisfactory explanation from the Alicante Provincial Council over the investment to resurface and widen up to three

kilometres of the CV-954. which links the eastern part of Torremendo to the Murcia region. The road only attracts up to 300 vehicles on a busy day and the Sierra Escalona group argue that the work could impact on wildlife in a protected area and are calling for an environment impact study on the project, and for the Valencian

Government to stop the project if the study is not carried out. The Informacion newspaper reports that despite the published plans for the work, the project may only stretch to a couple of kilometres and since it is not a brand new road construction, consultation and an environment impact study may not be needed.

Key Matter

The British ambassador to Spain, Simon Manley, has told Spanish reporters in a news conference at the British embassy in Madrid that the UK is “determined “to sort out the rights of Spanish citizens in the UK as well as those of British citizens living in Spain. "We want the Spanish to stay there and the British here. There is no more important issue than citizens in the Brexit negotiations," said Manley.

Extra Cover

Traffic delays in Torrevieja have led to Pilar de la Horadada’s fire station getting an additional crew during the summer high season, which will also provide a service to the Orihuela

Costa. In the absence of the new emergency coordination centre, and the widening of the N-332 main road, the extra manpower in Pilar has been supplied due to crews

struggling to attend incidents on the Orihuela Costa promptly due to jams on the N-332 heading south out of Torrevieja. The extended service will run until mid-September.

Foot Pursuit A 43-year-old Alicante City resident was arrested by the local police in San Vicente del Raspeig after a collision between two cars led to the two drivers then chasing each other on foot. Officers discovered that the detained man had nearly half a kilo of cocaine in the boot of his vehicle, which almost certainly prompted him to make a hasty exit after the crash, though he did not bank on the other motorist deciding to chase him down. Security staff at the university gardens, where the pursuit continued, brought down the offender, who was then subsequently charged with public health offences.

Holiday Fraud War

Plans to clamp down on bogus holiday sickness claims have been announced by UK ministers this week, led by Justice Secretary David Lidington. The move follows concerns from the travel industry that more and more suspected false insurance claims for gastric illnesses like food poisoning are being brought by British holidaymakers, partly fuelled by touts operating in resorts like Benidorm and on the island of Mallorca. Advice from the travel industry shows the upsurge of claims in this country – reported by the industry to be as high as 500% since 2013 – is not seen in other European coun-

tries, raising suspicions over the scale of bogus claims and damaging our reputation overseas. Due to the reported increase in claims, and as many tour operators appear to settle them out of court, the costs to the industry are increasing. This is raising fears of higher package holiday prices for the majority of law-abiding UK holiday makers. A major barrier to tackling the issue is that these spurious claims are arising abroad. Legal costs are not controlled, so costs for tour operators who fight claims can be out of all proportion to the damages claimed. Ministers said they want to reduce cash

966 843 498

incentives to bring spurious claims against package holiday tour operators. Under these proposals tour operators would pay a prescribed sum depending on the value of the claim, making the cost of defending a claim predictable. Justice Secretary David Lidington said: “Our message to those who make false holiday sickness claims is clear – your actions are damaging and will not be tolerated. We are addressing this issue, and will continue to explore further steps we can take. This government is absolutely determined to tackle the compensation culture which has penalised the honest majority for

too long.” A system to control costs already exists for most personal injury claims in England and Wales, but a loophole is being exploited in foreign holiday claims. To prevent this ministers have asked the Civil Procedure Rule Committee, which is responsible for setting rules on legal costs, to urgently look at the rules governing the costs of holiday claims. As a result of these proposed changes, fixed recoverable costs can be extended to cover claims arising abroad, closing the loophole and meaning that payouts for tour operators will be subject to stricter controls.

Time Gentlemen Please!

Torrevieja council has ordered the closure of three beach bars between Cala Piteras and Punta Prima that have been operating for a number of years without a license on land which should have no buildings on it. Torrevieja’s planning councillor Fanny Serrano said that a search of council files discovered no documentation in regard to concesssions in area or that municipal licenses had been applied for.

The authority started to take an interest in the status of the bars when a developer, as previously reported by The Courier, wanted planning permission in the Punta Prima area, but the council paused any authorisation after discovering that building work would be close to, or on a site of historical interest dating to the Civil War. That site also featured a beach bar (pictured) which appeared to have no legal status to be operating there.

The Informacion newspaper reports that two of the bars have been around for five years, whilst a third has been open for a decade. The paper says that besides Torrevieja council, neither the Valencian Government or the Coastal authority had given any permission for the bars to be built on what is classified as non-building land. The three bars do have a period of time in which they can launch an appeal.

Dinky Bagels Served With Smoked Salmon And Cream Cheese

INGREDIENTS 500g / 1lb 2oz strong white bread flour 2 tsp dried yeast 1 tsp salt 1 tbsp clear honey 1 free-range egg, beaten 300ml / 10fl oz warm water vegetable oil, for greasing 3-4 tbsp sesame seeds 3-4 tbsp poppy seeds To serve smoked salmon cream cheese METHOD In a food processor, blend the flour, yeast, salt, honey and beaten egg until well combined. Gradually add warm water until the mixture comes together as a dough. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured work surface and knead lightly until smooth. Place the dough into a bowl, cover and set aside in a warm place for at least an hour to prove. When the dough has proved, turn it out onto a lightly floured work surface and knock back to reduce the volume of the dough. Using your hands, divide the dough into twelve portions

and roll each into a ball, then flatten slightly. Make a hole in the centre of each of the balls using the handle of a wooden spoon. Place a sheet of greaseproof paper onto a baking tray and grease lightly with vegetable oil. Place the bagels onto the greaseproof paper and cover with cling film. Set aside to prove for about 45-50 minutes. Preheat the oven to 230C/450F/Gas 8. When the bagels have proved, bring a pan of water to the boil and lower the bagels into it in batches. Poach for 1-2 minutes, then remove from the water using tongs. Scatter the sesame seeds onto one plate and the poppy seeds onto another. When the bagels are still wet press one side into the sesame seeds and the other into the poppy seeds. Place the bagels onto the lined baking tray and bake for 10-12 minutes, or until golden-brown. Set aside to cool. To serve, cut the bagels in half and fill with smoked salmon and cream cheese.

People taking heartburn drugs could have higher risk of death, study claims Millions of people taking common heartburn and indigestion medications could be at an increased risk of death, research suggests. The drugs, known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), neutralise the acid in the stomach and are widely prescribed, with low doses also available without prescription from pharmacies. In the UK, doctors issue more than 50m prescriptions for PPIs every year. Now researchers say the drugs can increase risk of death, both compared with taking a different type of acid suppressant and not taking any at all. “We saw a small excess risk of dying that could be attributed to the PPI drug, and the risk increased the longer they took them,” said Ziyad Al-Aly, an epidemiologist from the University of Washington and co-author of the study. The team say the study suggests those who take the drugs without needing to could be most at risk. They urged people taking PPIs to check whether this was necessary. Previous research has

raised a range of concerns about PPIs, including links to kidney disease, pneumonia, more hip fractures and higher rates of infection with C difficile, a superbug that can cause life-threatening sepsis, particularly in elderly people in hospitals. But the latest study is the first to show that PPIs can increase the chance of death. Published in the journal BMJ Open, it examined the medical records of 3.5 million middle-aged Americans covered by the US veterans healthcare system. The researchers followed 350,000 participants for more than five years and compared those prescribed PPIs to a group receiving a different type of acid suppressant known as an H2 blocker. They also took into account factors such as the participants’ age, sex and conditions ranging from high blood pressure to HIV. The results show that those who took PPIs could face a 25% higher risk of death than those who took the H2 blocker. “In patients on [H2 blocker] tablets, there were 3.3 deaths per 100 people over

one year. In the PPI group, this figure was higher at 4.7 per 100 people per year,” said Al-Aly. The team also reported that the risk of death for those taking PPIs was 15% higher than those taking no PPIs, and 23% higher than for those taking no acid suppressants at all. Similar levels of increased risk were seen among peo-

ple who used PPIs but had no gastrointestinal conditions, a result which the authors speculated might be driving the higher risk seen overall. Gareth Corbett, a gastroenterologist from Addenbrooke’s hospital in Cambridge who was not involved with the study, cautioned against panic, pointing out that in most cases

the benefits of PPI far outweighed any risk. What was more, he said, while the increased risk sounded high, it was still very low for each person. “PPIs are very effective medicines, proven to save lives and reduce the need for surgery in patients with bleeding gastric and duodenal ulcers and several other conditions,” he said.

The study’s authors said it was important that PPIs were used only when necessary and stopped when no longer needed. Corbett agreed that many people take PPIs unnecessarily. “They could get rid of their heartburn by making lifestyle changes, such as losing weight and cutting back on alcohol, caffeine and spicy foods,” he said. The authors said the study was observational, meaning it did not show that PPIs were the cause of the increased risk of death, and that it was unclear how the drugs would act to affect mortality. They said the drugs could affect components within cells, known as lysosomes, that help break down waste material, or shortening protective regions at the end of chromosomes, known as telomeres. Aly said people on PPIs should check with their GP whether the drugs were still needed, adding: “In some cases we expect that PPIs can be safely stopped, particularly in patients who have been taking them for a long time.”

Can magnesium help depression – or is it just a placebo? "Over-the-counter magnesium tablets significantly improve depression in just two weeks, new research reveals," the Mail Online reports. A small study found that people taking the supplements – on top of their existing treatment – reported an improvement in depression symptoms. However, because the study wasn't blinded (people knew what they were taking) the improvements could have been down to the placebo effect; people get better just because they expect to get better. Researchers asked 126

adults with mild or moderate depression to spend six weeks taking magnesium supplements and six weeks without magnesium supplements. People also continued with their usual depression treatment. Researchers monitored people's depression symptoms with phone calls every two weeks. Half the people took supplements straight away, and half took supplements after waiting six weeks. Depression symptoms improved by an average six points on a scale of 0 to 27 after people took magnesium for six weeks, com-

pared to after six weeks not taking magnesium. The potentially positive effect of magnesium on depression isn't outside the realms of possibility. The element is thought to play a role in many of the biological processes involved in mood regulation. It is therefore frustrating that a more rigorous study design wasn't used to rule out the possibility of a placebo effect. Researchers contacted 1,340 adults identified by their primary care doctor as having mild or moderate depression. Of these, 126

people agreed to take part and were eligible for the study. People continued their usual treatment throughout the study. Half were randomly assigned to start magnesium supplements immediately, followed by a six week 'control period' without magnesium. The other half were assigned to start magnesium after a six week control period. All participants were monitored for symptoms and side effects with phone calls every fortnight, throughout the 12 week study period. People took four 500mg

tablets of magnesium chloride daily. Researchers looked at the average change in symptom score from start to end of the six weeks of magnesium treatment, and from start to end of the six weeks of control. They calculated the net dif-

ference (ie the difference in change in score between the two six week periods) and adjusted the figures to take into account use of SSRI medicines, the order in which people had been randomised, and their response during the control period.

How Iron supplements cause Brain Diseases Iron is needed to transport oxygen in the body. But too much iron will accumulate in cells and cause organ damage, and for this reason, iron in the body is tightly regulated. High levels of iron in the body will damage the brain and is a known promoter of Alzheimer's disease. Clinical studies have identified iron in the brain tissue of people with Alzheimer's. And in recent times scientists have suggested measuring iron levels in the brain as a way to detect early Alzheimer’s disease. The danger with iron is that it is favoured inside the body due its role in transporting oxygen, and in high amounts, it readily displaces other vital minerals such as zinc and chromium. Iron falsely takes the place of these metals and

body. Diseases of the gut can cause increased absorption of iron or a reduced excretion of iron from the body, causing iron overload. Iron cookware can also be a source of too much iron, especially if used to cook acidic foods such as tomato, as acid increases the absorption of iron. Alcohol can also lead to iron overdose by depleting zinc which is required to control iron in the body. A diet that is rich in Wheat-based foods (Bread, Pasta, Pastries, etc.), Red Meat and Alcohol will encourage iron overload in the body. by doing so impairs many chemical reactions in the body, resulting in dysfunctions and disease. Too much iron in the body also encourages the growth of

bacteria. Iron-only Supplements used to treat anaemia are a major contributor to high blood iron. Iron deficiency anaemia responds better to

a multivitamin containing iron as well as other minerals that are also required to prevent anaemia. A diet rich in iron-containing foods such as organ

meat - liver and kidneys will contribute to high iron in the body. Foods fortified with iron especially wheatbased foods may also result in high iron in the

Brain training app used to treat memory condition "Brain training games boost the memory and may reduce the risk of dementia, new research suggests," The Daily Telegraph reports. Researchers used an app called Game Show to treat

people with amnestic mild cognitive impairment. Amnestic mild cognitive impairment, which is characterised by problems with short-term memory worse than expected for a person

of that age, can be the first sign of dementia. But not everyone with this condition will go on to develop fullblown dementia. The app game involved associating different geo-

metric patterns with different locations. The small study, involving 42 adults, found playing games on the app for eight hours over four weeks improved the participants' performance in memory tests. The participants also reported that they enjoyed playing the games and were

motivated to continue using the app after the study ended. This would be important if the game was prescribed to help people with amnestic mild cognitive impairment in real life. This research is in its very early stages. It's not yet clear whether the game would be able to improve the symptoms of people with

this condition in everyday life, or slow the development of dementia. As one expert commentator has pointed out, this type of training is unlikely to prevent or cure dementia, but may help with symptoms. Get more advice on activities that may be useful for people with early-stage dementia.

COME AND JOIN US! It’s the perfect time to consider joining Find A Spanish Property as a property associate, as property prices are on the rise, and the market is blossoming. 2016 was a positive year for the real estate market with prices having bottomed out the year before with modest price rises. Things have really kicked in during 2017, in strong contrast to the recession period that kicked in during 2008 and 2009. Official government figures confirm that prices are rising this year, and outside the cities of Madrid and Barcelona, Alicante Province which features the Costa Blanca, and the Murcia region with the Costa Calida tourist area, are two of the biggest areas on mainland Spain which are seeing substantial rises in demand along with price increases. The cranes are back with new homes being built by the coast, and the re-sale market continues to rise, fuelled by low interest rates in Spain. Statistics show that demand for homes from British buyers is still high, despite pessimistic fears last year over the Brexit factor, coupled with purchasers from across Europe, and even further afield. Recent surveys show that the majority of British people living in Spain are aged 65 and over, and website statistics confirm that older British nationals with no mortgage on their UK property are still very much looking at Spain as their area of choice to buy a holiday home, or even somewhere to retire to. It’s a great time to get involved in becoming a seller of real-estate in Spain, especially since most of the cowboys disappeared thanks to the recession nearly a decade ago. We like to think that we’ve played our own small part in helping to seeing them off, by offering an honest business that people are proud to recommend and that we now want to substantially expand.

15 of the world's best holiday souvenirs Struggling to find the right souvenir? This year, ditch the magnets and opt for more unusual gifts from your nearest and dearest - whether it's a tin of air from New York, or a weird a wonderful can of the beer you fell in love with on that Munich brewery tour.

6. Sake set This one's especially ideal for older relatives. Their beloved sake set will take pride of place on the mantelpiece, instantly putting that Russian babushka doll to shame. Admittedly, they're not the easiest items to pack, but that's why they make such a great souvenir. Getting it home in one piece will earn you even more kudos.

1. Scorpion lollipops You've spent the past six months bragging to your friends how you ate scorpion in some tiny village in southern Vietnam, so why not imbue your loved ones back home with the same street cred? The good news is, the lollipop versions are much easier to pick up - they're especially popular in Nevada for some reason, and can be now be found in most countries even ones which don't have any scorpions, bizarrely.

7. A bit of a volcano So you've been to Iceland and smelled the sulphur. Why not buy a bit of a volcano to take home? Visit volcanic tourists destinations such as Hawaii and Iceland and you'll see plenty of bottles of volcanic ash for sale in souvenir shops. Whether the "ash" is actually dirt scraped from the roadside remains to be seen but that's not the point.

2. Civet coffee Nothing says "foodie" like a packet of this stuff. So what is civet coffee? Otherwise known as Kopi luwak, it's a drink made with coffee cherries which have been eaten then defecated by the civet, a forest-dwelling mammal native to certain parts of Asia and Africa. It's also the world's most expensive coffee, so choose the recipient carefully.

8. Currency This is a another souvenir with multiple benefits. That crumpled note of foreign currency that you didn't get round to spend will make a close friend or family member very happy. The more unusual currencies are best given to those who've travelled the least - they'll either frame it or stash it in a safe place, looking forward to the day they can spend their 50,000 Vietnamese Dong, oblivious to the fact it's actually worth just a few pounds.

3. Bags The best thing about buying bags as presents for friends? If you run out of space in your own handbag you can use the "present" you've purchased as a temporary solution. They're also relatively cheap, and ridiculously easy to come by. That fabric shopper adorned with "I love Seoul" which was presented to you during that painfully boring conference in South Korea? Someone somewhere will cherish that bag as if it was an Hermès Birkin. 4. Sausage Buying exotic sausages for your nearest and dearest is a great idea for several reasons. They're easy to pack, relatively cheap and will instantly upgrade the fridge of the person receiving it. A word of warning - it's a present best purchased on short haul holidays. Smuggle a sausage into countries like Australia or America and you risk being fined for importing potentially contaminated organic produce. France, Austria and Germany have the best pork products. Our personal favourite? The Thuringia Bratwurst, a type of German sausage which dates back to the seventeenth century.

9. Canned air Another way to bring home a little bit of your travels to those stuck back home, canned air is now one of the most popular souvenirs. Canned Central Park air seems to be especially popular, closely followed by Budapest and Paris air. Which we assume smells slightly more of traffic. 10. Weird beer

5. Sand or soil from Area 51 Other people might have snapped a selfie next to the "out of bounds" sign warning people to steer clear of Area 51, but how many people have a bottle of soil from what's known as one of the world's most famous UFO landing sites? Incidentally, if you can't make it stateside, similar souvenirs include tiny bottles of water from the River Jordan and tiny bottles of opal fragments from Coober Pedy, the world's opal mining capital. Suddenly that bottle of Blackpool sand you bought for ÂŁ5 looks rather boring.

Buy your beer-loving friend back home a can of Drunken Spider Canadian IPA and he'll be pleased as punch. It's another souvenir which is easy to obtain. In America, you don't even have to look very hard. Budweiser now produces versions of its famous beer made with grapefruit, strawberries and raspberries, so ticking this souvenir off the list doesn't necessarily require getting too far off the beaten track. 11. A rubber duck Yes, that really is a rubber duck clutching a miniature replica of Cologne's Dom cathedral and a stein of beer. Most of the world's biggest tourist attractions sell rubber duck souvenirs these days. They're fun for all ages, are less likely to smash than a glass replica of the Eiffel Tower, and considerably cheaper, too. 12. Gnomes In the same way rubber ducks have become the ultimate souvenir, country-themed garden gnomes have become equally sought-after mementos of trips abroad. Whether it's a miniature Donald Trump or a pointy-hatted Red Sox player, this is the souvenir nobody else will have. 13. Shoes Clogs, flamenco shoes or geta (traditional Japanese slippers): shoes are always a winner. It's another example of a souvenir which will imbue the receiver with instant travel kudos, even if the furthest they've travelled is Skegness (which we hear is very nice in summer, just to be clear). 14. Christmas decorations The rest of the world has finally cottoned on to the fact that Christmas is a multi-billion-dollar industry and it's now possible to pick up weird and wonderful Christmas decorations from most countries in the world. Gherkin-shaped tree decorations are especially popular in Germany, while irony-loving friends will be thrilled with one of the Trump-adorned Christmas baubles which are popping up in souvenir shops all over the US. 15. Tribal music Whether that recording of the GuajĂĄ tribe singing their ceremonial harvest song will ever get played isn't the point. It's simply a damn cool thing to have. This one's best saved for the type of person who subscribes to National Geographic and has a (mostly unscratched) scratch map of the world on their wall.

Pou Clar (Ontinyent). The name actually says it all: Pou Clar (clear well) is one of the most beautiful natural swimming pools in the area, mainly because of its crystal clear waters which, for thousands of years, have excavated some beautiful pools in the calcareous rock. Don’t be afraid of its 13 degree temperatures, once inside, surrounded by nature, you will have a great time. Los Charcos (Quesa). Rio Grande is responsible for this natural spot, which has given birth to four different natural pools over time. The place is lovely, so come well prepared: a picnic is always a good idea and take a selfie with its photogenic cascade in the background! La Fuente de los Baños (Montanejos). This natural pool is located in Castellón, it´s surrounded by lush vegetation and has warm water, plus several hiking routes in its surroundings which are well worth a visit. El Salto de la Novia (Navajas). With a height of some 60 metres and white like the veil of a bride, this waterfall is really impressive! It is not only beautiful, but is also surrounded of legends. They say that here, long time ago, to ensure a beautiful and durable marriage; the brides had to jump from the top of the waterfall. True or false? We do not know it, but one thing is clear: the natural swimming pool of el Salto de la Novia is one of the places not to be missed in Castellón. Les Fonts de L'Algar (Callosa d'en Sarrià). If you need to rest and charge your batteries with a good dose of nature, this is your place. Les Fonts de l'Algar are only a short drive from Benidorm and they are spectacular: the route along the course of the river will allow you to access to different swimming pools of turquoise water. Relaxation guaranteed, but, in high season it would be better to visit them on weekdays as it is usually a very crowded destination on weekends. This is only the beginning because there are many more natural pools: The Gorgo de la Escalera en Anna, Gestalgar, El Charco, The Gruñidor, Bolbaite… You will love visiting the inland areas as much as the coast!

Eagle Air Displays on the Mar Menor The Spanish Air Force equivalent to the red arrows, the Patrulla Águila, or Eagle Patrol, will be performing two air displays from their San Javier base over the next 2 weeks. The first, on Sunday the 16th of July, will be celebrating the Virgen del Carmen fiesta. Centred on the beach that is next to "La Curva" at Lo Pagán.

Thursday 20 to Sunday 23 July, 2017 Gran Alacant Gran Alacant Fiesta Weekend.

Then, on Tuesday the 25th of July, the attention will be around the Club náutico de Santiago de la Ribera, celebrating the fiesta of Santiago Apóstol. The timings depend on weather conditions, but will take place somewhere between 10 in the morning ant 2 in the afternoon. Of course, because these are air displays, you don´t have to be at the specific locations to watch and enjoy the spectacle, yuo will be able to see it from just about any beach in the Mar Menor area, including San Javier airport where they are based. Patrulla Águila formed in 1985 and is the aerobatic demonstration team of the Spanish Air Force. They are based at San Javier, where the officer academy is located. They fly 7 Casa C-101 Aviojets, with static displays of redundant aircraft placed around the area, including at Cartagena and the Dos Mares roundabout. They are the only team to use yellow smoke, used to create the colours of the Spanish flag, and are also known for their formation landings.

TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

American TV does political dramas well….very well in fact. Just go back to the wonderful West Wing starring Martin Sheen for a wry look at how a positive US president should behave in a series that is beloved and still talked about some 18 years after it first hit the screen. These days we have two very different kinds of White House bosses on screen in two shows available in the UK and Spain via Netflix, and they make for very compelling viewing, especially in this “dry” summer period for quality drama. House of Cards starring Kevin Spacey is absolutely superb and with Netflix recently launching series five, I’m a new boy to the party having just started on the first batch of episodes. Over five years ago barely anybody had heard of Netflix until they boldly announced their first original drama commission based on the original BBC series dating back to 1990, which was adapted from the Michael Dobbs book. Ian Richardson was the villain

Setting A President

that we loved to hate in the shape of Francis Urqhart, and in Spacey as Frank Underwood, you have somebody cut from the same cloth, but even dirtier. At the time when Netflix launched House of Cards there were plenty of doubters (including yours truly) over whether anybody would be interested in downloading a TV drama and paying for it. How wrong everybody was, because if it’s high quality,

then word will get out and people will want to watch. Fast forward to last autumn and check out the Netflix triumph that is The Crown. It would not have happened if House of Cards didn’t set the standard and by gum it seriously does. Just half a dozen episodes in, I’ve become addicted to the concept of “box-setting” wanting instantly to move onto the next instalment, in the tale of Spacey as the

Congressman that was promised the plum job of Secretary of State but ended up being stiffed by the President is wonderful as he starts plotting his revenge, and don’t you just love it. Like in the BBC original, we get Underwood’s witty asides to the viewer which just gets you rolling in the aisles, and his wife, played by Robin Wright, is just as vicious in what she wants. We also have the famous line of “You might

well think that. I couldn’t possibly comment”. I’ve a long way to go before I catch up as Underwood works his way to the very top, but that’s a journey that I’m really looking forward to making over the next few weeks. The ABC drama Designated Survivor has been bought by Netflix for streaming in the UK and other European countries and features Kiefer Sutherland as a low level

housing minister in the US cabinet who ends up being President after a terror attack takes out the whole of the US administration. Once I got used to Sutherland not being Jack Baeur in 24, I liked his initial vulnerability as Tom Kirkman and the mix of politics and conspiracy in the first half dozen episodes that I have watched so far. OK, it may be a bit farfetched but it does raise some interesting issues as to what might happen if terrorists (or perhaps internal plotters?) strike at the heart of a US administration. There’s plenty of quick plot development to keep you on the edge of your seat, and like House of Cards, you instantly want to hit the next episode button. Stand by for the big buzz from Monday with the start on Sky Atlantic (amidst many sources) of the penultimate series of Game of Thrones. The trailers look great and it’s a neat move from HBO in the States to launch it in mid-July ahead of the autumn pack of dramas.

The Doctors will return at Christmas

The closing moments of Doctor Who series ten finale revealed that this year’s Doctor Who Christmas special will be a multi-Doctor adventure featuring the current Doctor (Peter Capaldi) and the First Doctor (David Bradley). The cliff-hanger ending saw the Doctor fatally shot by a Mondasian Cyberman and begin to regenerate. Stepping out of the TARDIS into an arctic landscape, he fought off the glowing regeneration energy and fell to his knees, vowing that this time he would not live on and change into a new Doctor.

This was declared 'ridiculous' by an approaching figure, who mocked the Doctor as he stepped forward through the snow to reveal himself as the very first incarnation of the Time Lord ("The original, you might say") just before the credits rolled. The story will continue at Christmas. Further casting and details for the Doctor Who Christmas special will be revealed in due course. As previously announced, the special will serve as Peter Capaldi's farewell to the series, and will feature the debut of the next Doctor.

RICHARD CAVENDER

BlueMoon Solutions www.bluemoonsolutions.es

BlueMoon Solutions is the computer and IT services company on the Costa Blanca. BlueMoon Solutions comes to you at home or at work. Their personal service covers from Alicante to Pilar de la Horadada.

Richard moved to Spain ten years ago having left his management background behind in the UK and decided to use his IT skills to help home users and small businesses with their PC problems. Now a relaxed 'computer man' he is out and about in the Spanish sun every day, making house and shop calls and using his vast experience and qualifications to sort out the problem there and then. Computers are his hobby as well as his work so don’t be surprised to get an answer to your email in the early hours!

ADVICE: Eric was confused as to why his Internet connection speed varied when using different devices.

Q

Hi Richard, I have just changed to ISP with Fibre Optic offering download speed of 100 mpbs.I have a Toshiba Satellite C70D-B with a AMD 1.8 GHz processor. I also have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Tablet and Samsung Galaxy J36 phone. The router is in the lounge and the laptop is 20 meters in a bedroom on the ground floor. If I connect the laptop by ethernet cable to the router I consistently get a download speed of 88 and an upload of 20. However, by using it in the bedroom (without ethernet) I get between 4 and 5 download and 1 and 2 for upload. This has sometimes gone up to 33 download and 14 upload. The tablet varies between 48 down and 15 up to 7 down and 10 up.The phone is consistent with 30 down and 19 up. My provider has made changed to the router but tells me there is nothing else I can do. Can you suggest anything please

Hi Eric, this sounds perfectly normal to me, you see there are a bunch of different technologies and standards at play here between your devices.

When you connect your computer via a cable you connect at a speed of usually 100 or 1000 Gigabits per second (these are maximum connection speeds and of course the bottleneck will be your physical Internet connection speed) When you connect via wifi you could be anything from 54 Megabits (a Megabit being significantly slower than a Gigabit of course) depending on whether you’re connecting using 802.11b or g or you might have faster technology with could give you up to 1 Megabit per second. In addition all of the wireless connections have to contend with furniture and people in between them and the router – all of these things affect the speed of your connection. In short, were ever possible connect using a cable, however, if you need to connect via wifi and you find that your signal is poor and its affecting your wifi speed then maybe you should consider investing in a wireless extender, this will improve the signal strength and therefore your connection speed.

Rahm’s Rule Scare

The third of the year’s Majors hits Royal Birkdale on Thursday with the Open being staged there will for a 10th time, and the first since Padraig Harrington lifted the Claret Jug in 2008. Former Open champion and now respected (and soon to retire) US TV golf pundit Johnny Miller has placed Hideki Matsuyama as the early favourite to win next week’s championship and become Japan’s first major winner. But Miller, who won the title at the course in 1976, said on Tuesday that picking a champion was even tougher than usual in view of the poor form of several of the sport’s biggest names. “The real hot shots in golf, like Dustin Johnson and Rory (McIlroy) and Jason Day… they’re not on the top of their game right now,” Miller said, adding Sergio Garcia, Henrik Stenson, Rickie Fowler and Justin Thomas to that list. “So I don’t know what to expect, because majors are a whole different animal but Hideki, I think he’s the best player right now. Tournament in and tournament out his bad shots are really good, which is what you need at Birkdale. And I think that he’s ready to win.” World number two Matsuyama tied for second at the U.S. Open last month behind

Spain’s Jon Rahm overcame a worry over ball marking to earn his first European Tour victory as a closing round of 65 won him the Irish Open by six shots at Portstewart on Sunday. Rahm followed compatriots Seve Ballesteros, Jose-Maria Olazabal and Sergio Garcia in winning the championship. Sharing the overnight lead on 17 under with Daniel Im, Spain's Rahm eagled the fourth as he holed from 150 yards. Rahm was four clear on the 13th fairway when a query over his ball marking on the sixth green caused a concern. But no penalty was imposed and a dominant Rahm, 22, finished six ahead of Richie Ramsay and Matthew Southgate. Tournament referee Andy McFee approached Rahm on the 13th to get the player's view on his ball-marking incident on the sixth green after the European Tour had been made aware of the issue. After moving his marker out of Im's putting line, Rahm had appeared to replace his ball in a slightly different spot as he prepared to tap in from 14 inches but following a long conversation with the Spaniard, McFee elected to impose no penalty. Rahm acknowledged that the episode had affected his concentration in the closing stages. "It really makes me feel bad that my first win on the European Tour is always going to have that little mark on it," said the Spaniard. "I thought I put it back exactly where it was but they came to me and told me it was such a slight difference."

Brooks Koepka, though he has the added pressure of trying to become the first Japanese to win a men’s major. Miller said he does not think Birkdale is likely to throw up an obscure winner. Eight of the nine previous Opens there were won by multiple major champions and, though Birkdale is not the most famous Open course, it is a strong test, Miller believes. “I think Royal Birkdale is one of my favourite courses, especially my favourite links, because we deem it a little fairer, the fairways are a little flatter but the sand dunes are fantastic and very demanding,” said the American, who perhaps is a little biased in view of his victory there in 1976. “I’m excited to go back there and sort of see if my memory resurrects. I believe it’s an accuracy course. The reason why I won the Open in ’76 is my caddie literally made me hit a one-iron. I hit a one-iron 12 out of the 14 tee shots.” That will not be an option this year, as players no longer carry one-irons. “I can see a lot of driving irons and three-woods off the tee like (2016 champion) Stenson did last year,” Miller added.

Coach Stays

CD Torrevieja has announced that Antonio Pedreño Saura "Pedreño" will be continuing as the team’s coach after their relegation earlier this year to the Preferente. Pedreño was brought in during the autumn to try to clear up the mess created by his predecessor Gabi Correa who controversially replaced Pedreño last summer. The team’s awful start, despite a glimmer of hope in avoiding relegation from the regional third division last March, meant an almost inevitable return to the Preferente after a dozen years at a higher level. In statement, the club said that “Pedreño is the ideal person to lead the team in the fight to achieve promotion to the third division. He possesses the experience, professionalism, ability and true commitment to the club. He stands strong in moments of adversity and difficulty.” In turn, Pedreño said that his objective is to form a competitive squad with the largest possible number of local players and to start an exciting project that will give the Torry supporters something to cheer about. No players for the squad have been named as yet, with pre-season training due to start on Monday July 24th. The first set of Preferente matches will be staged over the first weekend in September.

He returned from an unsuccessful campaign on loan at Sunderland and was left out of Mourinho's squad for the preseason tour of the United States. Januzaj, also had a stint on loan at Borussia Dortmund in 2015-16, and joined United from Anderlecht when he was 16 and broke into the first team in 2013 during David Moyes' illfated spell in charge. Deemed good enough to take Ryan Giggs' number 11 shirt, Januzaj signed a five-year contract extension that was not due to expire until 2018. Real Sociedad finished sixth in La Liga last season and will compete in the Europa League group stage in 2017-18. However, just as they did with Memphis Depay, United have included a buy-back clause in the deal that will allow them first option to re-sign Januzaj if he revives his career in Spain. That clause insulates them from the possibility of having to pay a massive fee to bring him back to Old Trafford, something they did not manage when they paid a world-record fee to bring Paul Pogba back to the club. Real Sociedad – ironically once managed by Moyes – finished sixth in La Liga last season and qualified automatically for the group stages of the Europa League.

Fitness Hitch

The former CD Cox coach, Juanan Cases, has raided his ex-club as he strengthens his squad for the new season for CD Almoradi in the Preferente. Cases has signed defender Alejandro Moreno Gómez known as Rojo, pictured being presented with his Almoradi shirt by club president Francisco Albaladejo.

Jordan Amavi's move from Aston Villa to Sevilla has collapsed, after the La Liga side said he failed a medical. The French left-back had agreed personal terms on a fiveyear contract, but Sevilla said that the deal was off, saying the player did not meet their necessary fitness standards, which Villa claim is an excuse to scrap the deal.

Munich Move No Movement

James Rodriguez has joined Bayern Munich from Real Madrid on a two-year loan deal. The Colombia international's future at the Bernabeu had been in doubt after he was left out of Real's squad for the Champions League final win over Juventus last month. Manchester United had been linked with a move for the 25-year-old and his agent is also believed to have offered him to Chelsea, Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Milan and Juventus. But Rodriguez, who joined Real in 2014 for around £71m from Monaco, has opted for a move to German champions Bayern to play under former boss Carlo Ancelotti, who brought him to the Spanish capital. "We're delighted we've been able to complete this transfer," said Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. "Signing James Rodríguez was our coach Carlo Ancelotti's biggest wish, following their successful spell working together in Madrid. "James is a very versatile player. He's a goalscorer himself, he sets up a lot of goals and on top of that he's great from set-pieces. There's no question that this transfer further increases the quality in our team." Rodriguez moves to Bayern on a loan deal until June 30, 2019. A statement on Bayern's website says the attacking midfielder will join his new team-mates on Sunday for Bayern's 12-day Audi Summer Tour to China and Singapore. Rodriguez rose to prominence after finishing top goal scorer at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil with six goals. Those performances caught the eye of Real Madrid and since moving to the Bernabeu he has won the Champions League and FIFA Club World Cup twice as well as the La Liga title. He made 111 appearances for Real, scoring 36 goals and producing 41 assists.

Real Madrid have given up chasing Manchester United goalkeeeper David De Gea, while Eden Hazard has told the club he does not want to join them. The Champions League winners have been linked with moves for the Manchester United keeper and Chelsea’s winger for a number of months. But, according to Spanish sources, Real have decided to ditch plans of a bid for De Gea, 26, as Jose Mourinho is furious over their handling of the Alvaro Morata negotiations. United wanted to bring the out-of-favour Spaniard to Old Trafford with a deal looking likely at one point. But talks stalled and Mourinho opted to spend 80 million euro on Everton forward Romelu Lukaku instead. And now Mourinho is allegedly refusing to do business with the La Liga champions. Meanwhile, Diario Gol are reporting that Eden Hazard, 26, called Real boss Zinedine Zidane to tell him he has no intention of moving to the Bernabeu. Real have been heavily linked with a move for Hazard this summer with Zidane admitting he is a big admirer of the Belgian international. But now it seems he will stay put at Stamford Bridge this summer as he continues his recovery from an ankle injury. But the reports also claims Hazard refused to rule out a move to the Spanish capital in the future. Hazard — who joined Chelsea in 2012 for £32million — has spoken before about his desire to move to Real. When asked about interest from Real last month he said: “Of course, that’s all. “We all dream. Of course, I would consider it if Madrid made an offer. I am keen to win trophies. It would be great to win the Champions League." “But Chelsea’s goal is to win the Champions League as well. Honestly, I do not know what will happen. I only know that I still have a contract with Chelsea for three seasons and that we just had an amazing campaign". Meanwhile coming to Stamford Bridge from Real is right-back Danilo(pictured below). He has made 55 appearances since joining Madrid from Porto back in 2015 but the 25-year-old defender is expected to complete a move to Stamford Bridge ahead of the 2017/18 campaign. It is suggested that the Premier League champions have seen off competition from Juventus for the highly-rated Brazil international this summer. It’s understood Antonio Conte wants a deal for Danilo finalised before Chelsea’s squad jets out for their pre-season training in the Far East next week.

Helping Jordan

A charity football match is being staged in Los Montesinos this Saturday(July 15th) to raise money for 18-year-old Jordan Payne, who was badly injured in a car crash over the Pyrenees when he was travelling back to Spain from the UK. Jordan, who besides being a keen footballer and Everton supporter, also coaches the youngsters at the Costa Cobras rugby club, and suffered a fracture to his spine in the accident. The crash happened during a foggy night, and the car that Jordan was in went some 40 metres down the side of one of the hills, rolling down towards a river. Luckily the car was stopped upside on a tree just feet away from the river, and emergency services began a difficult operation to rescue Jordan and his uncle. Jordan knew that his back had gone and was in severe pain, with crews having to cut down trees to make a pathway to be able to get him up the embankment on a spinal board . He was taken to a hospital in Huesca where the spinal problems were diagnosed amongst the cuts and bruises. His family then had to pay nearly a thousand euros to have him transferred by ambulance to Torrevieja Hospital where he has been undergoing a course of treatment, and he has been in a spinal brace for the last three months. It will be a long time before he can start playing football again, or pick up his rugby coaching. He will have to have a monthly check for at least the next year, and will be seeing an orthopaedic trauma doctor next week again to discuss the possibility of surgery. Jordan has had to have many changes made around his home to help him on his long road to recovery, and though he can walk a little, currently he has to lie flat on his bed for most of the time. The match kicks-off at the Los Montesinos municipal stadium this Saturday evening at 6.00 pm, with the “Tuesday” team playing the “Thursday” team.

Dele Please Spanish newspapers are claiming that Barcelona stars Neymar and Messi want their club to sign midfielder Dele Alli, as the squad started pre-season training on Wednesday. The La Liga runners-up are looking for a new midfielder this summer in Ernesto Valverde’s first year in charge. They’ve been heavily linked with a move for Paris StGermain star Marco Verratti, along with Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho. But a move for either player has yet to materialise, and despite the speculation, it seems unlikely that Tottenham would be willing to sell one of their brightest young stars. They’re under no pressure to let Alli leave as he signed a new deal at Spurs back in September, but of course money always talks!

ALVES SNUB

Manchester City have missed out on one of their summer transfer targets after Brazil full-back Dani Alves joined Paris St-Germain on a free transfer. Alves, who has signed a two-year deal, has opted against joining up with his former Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola. City were prepared to give the 34-year-old a two-year contract, but would not match the £230,000 a week it is understood he will receive in France.

The British Grand Prix is the latest Formula 1 race this Sunday, and after a controversial trip to Azerbaijan and a somewhat dull affair in Austria the fast, sweeping, circuit of Silverstone promises close and competitive racing up and down the grid. It could also be day that Lewis Hamilton achieves a bit of British F1 history. But the track so far has been making the headlines rather than the race itself, with Red Bull team principal Christian Horner accusing Silverstone of "serious misjudgement and mismanagement" after the circuit owners gave notice of their intent to pull the plug on Formula 1 because they cannot afford it. The British GP is now in danger of being chalked off the calendar following the decision taken by the British Racing Drivers' Club, which owns the Northamptonshire circuit, on Tuesday. The gambit is that the BRDC can arrange a more financially viable contract with the F1 owners, but with an F1

race being touted around the streets of London, Horner believes their decision could backfire, with F1's owners not guaranteed to cut them a more financially-viable deal. "I am amazed that they have triggered their break clause," Horner said. "Silverstone signed a contract in 2010, and they knew what they were entering into at the time. "They have now realised that they can't afford it despite having a full house every year. They either should not have signed it in the first place or they got their maths wrong”. Local favourite Lewis Hamilton trails championship leader Sebastian Vettel by 20 points after finishing only fourth in Austria last Sunday. Hamilton will be bidding to match his late compatriot Jim Clark as the only driver to have won four British Grands Prix in a row and five in total. Vettel, like Hamilton, has won three races so far this season and will be looking for Ferrari's first win in Britain since Fernando Alonso in 2011.

MORE OF THE SAME Mesut Ozil says he wants to stay at Arsenal and will discuss his future with the club after a pre-season tour of Australia and China. The midfielder, 28, is under contract with Arsenal until 2018 but speculation over his future has been widespread. "It is definitely my preference to stay," the German said this week, who joined Arsenal from Real Madrid for 42 million pounds in 2013.

England will pick from an unchanged 12-man squad for the second Test match against South Africa which starts today at Trent Bridge. The hosts took a 1-0 lead in the four-match series on Sunday with a 211-run win at Lord's, with spinner Moeen Ali taking 10 wickets. Middlesex bowler Toby Roland-Jones could miss out again as seam trio James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Mark Wood bowled just 10 overs between them in the second innings in London. Only twice in eight Tests against England have South

Africa won at Trent Bridge and both of those wins came in another era. Dudley Nourse, with a double century, and Athol Rowan, with a second innings "five-for", were the heroes when South Africa won for just the second time in England in 1951. The 1965 triumph at Trent Bridge is among South Africa’s most famous Test victories, with many of a certain vintage still vividly recalling Graeme Pollock, who was a guest of the MCC at Lord’s last week, scoring 125 off 149 balls with 21 fours. His elder brother Peter took a "ten-for" as South Africa claimed victory by 71 runs
