A MAN POSSESSED?

British pensioner has told an Elche court that he was "possessed by voices" when he staged a six-month cover up of his dead partner's body, after allegedly killing her in September 2014. Proseuctors have called for a 19-year prison sentence for 77-year-old Charlie Bevill-Warcup, who is alleged to have killed 76year old Quesdada resident Rosie Broadwell with his walking stick at his San Miguel de Salinas home. She had been staying with the defendent whilst her house was being decorated. Bevill-Warcup then dumped her body off the CV-940 road in the Algorfa municipality by the AP7 exit. He told the Alicante Provincial Court hearing in Elche that Mrs.Broadwell was his "princess" and said that she died due to an "accident", and that they had

a very good relationship. Under questioning from the prosecutor, the British pensioner denied that Rosie had told him that the relationship was over after six and a half years. He was said that they had got on well and that he was a "prince for her". Prosecutors say that the defendant had been drinking with Mrs.Broadwell at his house, and when she went to get some ice from the kitchen for a glass of

whiskey, she slipped onto the floor, and was unable to get up because she had a back problem. Rather than help her up, Bevill-Warcup started to beat her with a walking stick, screaming words that he was "stupid" and that "it was going to carry on all night". The jury was told that Bevill-Warcup had changed his account of what happened a number of times, with the defence claiming that it was an accident, and that in fact it was Mrs.Broadwell who attacked her partner with the stick. They say he managed to snatch it back off her amidst claims that in a scuffle he pushed her and she hit the side of a kitchen worktop, causing her to fall to the floor. He tried to bathe and clean the wound, and covered her with a blanket, before going to bed and discovering her dead the following morning. Medical reports said that that Mrs. Broadwell died of severe blows to the head caused by a traumatic brain injury, and a day later, BevillWarcup took her body to an

area off the CV-940, and covered it up with branches. He then proceeded to behave as if nothing had happened, but under pressure from Mrs.Broadwell's daughter, Cheryl Webster, he filed a missing person report with the Guardia Civil, who became suspicious. He said that he was "in panic" and that he had been "possessed with voices in his head telling him what to do" in regard to covering up her death. Neighbours had told authorities that they had heard screams from his San Miguel home the night before Rosie’s disappearance had been reported. Bevill-Warcup said at the time that Mrs. Broadwell had vanished after he claimed to have taken her to an ATM in Quesada, though the Guardia confirmed that she had never used the machine, or visited any of her regular shopping outlets in the area. In March 2015, BevillWarcup made a statement to the Guardia where he admitted to being involved in her death, and he was immediately arrested.

The Alicante Province population figure has gone up for a second successive year, albeit by a slim margin of 730, according to data compiled by the National Statistics Institute as of January 1st 2017. One pound eight million people officially reside in the area, with the rise down to internal migration within Spain, with just over 27 thousand people leaving Alicante Province and Spain altogether last year, up by nearly five thousand on the previous year. British nationals lead the pack of non-Spanish departures, but in a counter-balance some 26 and a half thousand non-Spaniards came to Alicante Province last year, the biggest figure since 2008, and that arrivals figure was also led by the British, followed by Algerian

nationals. At present 345,875 nonSpaniards live in Alicante Province, which accounts for nearly 19 percent of the total population. The figures are calculated on pardon registration, which means that some foreigner residents are almost certainly “living under the radar”. The British resident figure is officially put at just over 74 thousand, some 22 percent of the foreign population, followed by Moroccans at 11 percent. Over a third of foreign residents in Alicante Province live in the Alicante, Torrevieja, Orihuela, and Elche areas, with Rojales having the second-highest non-Spanish proportion of the population in the region, at 70 percent, which breaks down to over 12 thousand foreigners on the padron.

Holidaymaker Held A 34-year-old British holidaymaker has been arrested by the Guardia Civil, after allegedly assaulting a 28-year-old San Fulgencio man who went into a coma last Saturday morning during the Moors and Christians celebrations in Rojales. The unnamed Briton, who was detained in Formentera de Segura, appeared before an Orihuela judge and was remanded into custody. The incident happened after 4.00 am, with witnesses telling the local police that the man was punched hard in the chest by a man of “athletic appearance”, who then ran away. The Guardia Civil identified the British national using CCTV footage and witness reports, and arrested him three days later. The Guardia said that the incident apparently started with a verbal exchange in a kabila tent bar for reasons unknown, with the victim then falling to the ground and banging his head resulting in him becoming unconcious.

Security staff tried to help him, before an ambulance arrived to take him to Torrevieja Hospital. Such was the seriousness of his condition, he was transferred to the private IMED facility in Elche , which has some of the best neurosurgery techniques in the region. At the time of going to press, he was still in a very serious condition.

More In Work

The mayors of Rojales and San Fulgencio, Antonio Pérez and Carlos Ramírez, have both visited the hospital in Elche to provide support to the victim’s family. Ramírez said that the 28year-old victim was a wellknown and liked figure in the San Fulgencio area, who got involved in traditional celebrations like those for Semana Santa.

Unemployment in Spain is now at its lowest level since January 2009, with a 98 thousand drop in June compared to May, taking the total figure to 3.3 million, according to official government figures. Over the 12 months, there has been a drop of 400 thousand people on the dole, with a 16 percent fall in unemployment amongst

people aged 25 years and under. Figures last month for Alicante Province last showed a fall of over five thousand people signing up, bringing the total unemployment figure down to 152 thousand. Murcia’s statistics fell by two thousand last month, with the overall figure standing at 103 thousand people out of work.

Extra garbage collections have been launched across the San Javier municipality during the peak holiday season, which will run until the end of September. Besides extra daily rounds in La Manga, collections every day around Santiago de la Ribera have been doubled, with 16 extra employees hired over the summer period.

Tourist Trends

Russian Targets

A Serbian man who looked to rob newly-arrived female Russian travellers at Alicante-Elche airport has been arrested by the National Police. The 58-year-old was detained by officers who found him in possession of items worth over 20 thousand euro that he pilfered

at the airport. Plain-clothed officers put a track on his movements after reports of a man that was behaving strangely. The reports state that he would normally strike by pinching bags, when his potential marks were ordering food or beverages in one of the airport's catering

outlets. Security footage confirmed what he was up to, and amongst the items discovered were 16 thousand euro in cash and 20 thousand Russian roubles that been lifted from one victim alone, in addition to a highend mobile phone, also found.

The latest international tourist figures show that almost nine million people came to Spain in May, a rise of nearly 12 percent on the same month last year. The Valencia region figures, which include Alicante Province, were even more

dramatic with a 19 percent increase on May 2016, with over 912 thousand foreign tourists, of which 38 percent came from the UK. The increase of international visitors to the Murcia region was more modest in May, as figures went up by

three percent over a year, with the total standing at 64 thousand. Overall, Murcia has seen foreign tourist numbers go up by over 12 percent in the first five months of 2017, in comparison to last year’s same period.

Tree Down

A decaying palm tree collapsed on an Orihuela Costa road on Saturday, but fortunately no cars or pedestrians were close to it at the time, or any parked vehicles

in its trajectory. The incident happened on Calle Quilla in Cabo Roig at around 7.00 pm, with the tree having been infected by vine weevil disease.

programme. Sensors are used to work out the condition of a patient, and it stimulates the damaged area of the brain, with a robotic attachment to the arm.

Water consumption in Torrevieja has gone up by 11 percent over the first five months of 2017, compared to the same period last year, according to a half-yearly report from water company

Agamed. The company bases that figure on the two point three million cubic metres of water that was dealt with by Agamed at the city's treatment plant.

Ring Of Shame Three men have been detained in the Murcia region and one in Alicante Province for being part of an internet child pornography ring that exchanged obscene material via file sharing systems. A total of 27 people were arrested across Spain by the Guardia Civil for their part in distributing the sexually abusive material, with the Guardia running their operation to track them down for nearly two years. Operation Clara saw 24 raids, including two work-

place visits, with a total of 22 and a half thousand files of obscene material involving

children aged up to 14 years being seized by the investigators.

The report also reviewed previously announced or completed projects to improve drainage, sanitation, and stormwater collection around the Torrevieja area.

Signature Battle

Joint Approach Coastal-based councils, local police chiefs, and the Guardia Civil have decided to communicate more between themselves to help curb crimes in tourist areas during the high summer season. Orihuela, Pilar de la Horadada, San Pedro del Pinatar, and Torrevieja officials met in Pilar to discuss measures to improve contact between the local police forces and the Guardia Civil to help pass on information over criminal activity, like thieves and illegal hawkers operating on beaches and the surrounding area. Leaflets will also be

Health and safety issues that forced Torrevieja council to close down the Teatro Municipal nearly two years ago have been dealt with, according mayor José Manuel Dolón, but there’s still no reopening date due to a stand-off with the building’s architect. The mayor showed a

certificate issued by the Organismo de Control Autorizado that said that all problems had been dealt with, but a final work certification still needs to be signed to get an operating license, and that’s where a final hitch still lies. That document, under law, has to be signed-off by the

building’s architect Antonio Marquerie, but he is said by Dolón to be “uncooperative”, though a letter has been sent to him asking for his signature. If that doesn’t happen, then the Mayor says that other options will be looked at, including taking legal action against the architect.

handed out to tourists, as well as residents, with information and contact

numbers to call if they happen to become a victim of crime.

Change Of Direction Motorists have been getting to grips with a new oneway system on roads around the centre of Santa Pola that has come into operation. Calle del Mar has become a two-way street, whilst Calles Dean López, Almirante Antequera(pictured) and Antina have all had their one-way directions reversed. The local police confirmed that they had got a number of complaints and queries from motorists, with Santa Pola’s infrastructure councillor, Francisco Soler, apologising for any incon-

vience and asking for drivers used to the area to pay spe-

cial attention to the new road signs.

Corvera Name

Plans to move the site of La Mata market have hit a snag, as over 160 traders have written to the council asking them to change the proposed new area. That was followed by a meeting with Torrevieja’s markets councillor Javier Manzanares on Tuesday. Torrevieja council

announced a new site a fortnight ago on various streets around La Mata, after they were told that they had to move from the existing plot due to subsidece issues. The authority said they had taken the decision after consultation with local groups. The stall-holders say that the roads would be too nar-

row for the market to operate on, and would cause problems similar to a decade ago that forced a move to what is now the current site. The traders say that using Avenida de Los Europeos or Avenida de Francia would be far better, and they expressed that view to Manzanares this week.

The still-to-be opened Corvera International Airport in Murcia is to be named after one of the region's most famous inventors, Juan de la Cierva. Born in 1895, De la Cierva died in a plane crash close to Croydon airfield in 1936, when the Amsterdam-bound KLM flight that he was on, was hindered by thick fog and crashed into a house. De la Cierva was the inventor of the autogyro in 1920, a single-rotor type of aircraft. His work on rotor dynamics and control made the modern helicopter

a possibility, and he moved to Britain in 1925 to estab-

lish the Cierva Autogyro Company.

Corruption Quiz

Three companies and seven people, including the Santa Pola police chief JosĂŠ Miguel Zaragoza (pictured left), are being investigated in a corruption case involving the alleged misuse of public money. The issue revolves around the buying of uniforms for the local police and for civil protection officers. Three companies are also being looked at in the

National Police inquiry, which saw Miguel Zaragoza taken in for questioning last week along with two local police officers. A further officer was taken to the National Police in Alicante last Friday, with Santa Pola's former security councillor Antonio PĂŠrez Huertas also brought in by the agents, in addition to local businessmen.

No details about the exact nature of the investigation has been disclosed including the sums involved, but the Informacion newspaper suggests that deals may have been allegedly struck between the police and suppliers without any formal tendering, and that there may have been occasions when uniforms were paid for, and not delivered.

Nice And Easy

A new easy access shower unit designed with disabled people in mind, and the first of its kind in the Valencia region, has been launched at Torrevieja’s Los Nåufragos beach. The unit, built and designed by Recreativos Acuåticos Horadada, cost

some 30 thousand euro to develop, with each one priced at five thousand euro. Users can just come in with their wheelchairs or other mobility equipment, and easily take advantage of a fresh water shower, after being on the beach or in the sea.

Pamplona Protest

Around 400 people staged a protest last weekend against bullfighting in Pamplona, days before the city started to host its famed festival featuring dangerous bull runs, which began yesterday. Holding signs that read in English "Bullfight Is Cruel" and "No Tradition Trumps Reason" in Spanish, the protesters marched on Saturday through the city's

old quarter. The route included a stretch of the narrow streets that is being used for the bull runs that have made the San Fermin festival known worldwide. Tens of thousands of people from Spain and abroad come each year to Pamplona to witness or take part in the early morning bull runs, when crowds of runners risk being gored or trampled.

Campoverde Gives

Legion Changes

The Campoverde Theatre Group has presented 600 euro to the Help at Home, Costa Blanca community bus appeal. The money was raised from last May’s theatre supper show ‘The Good Old Days’, with plans afoot for their next show at the end of September, which will be ‘A Magical Murder Mystery Tour’. The HAH bus appeal is progressing well, with over 22 thousand euro raised so far, as the final target is getting close to being achieved.

Choral Success

Orihuela Costa Community Care was the beneficiary from two concerts recently performed to packed houses by the Melody Makers International choir at the Orihuela Costa Resort. The Sound of the Musicals featured a variety of show favourites with the choir under the regular baton of their musical director Nigel Hopkins. Band members from the UK augmented the choir, along with a variety of solo turns.

The Royal British Legion - District North Spain has a new President in the shape of Nigel Hamilton-Hails (pictured left) who was previously Vice Chairman, who has taken over from Lloyd Milen who had to resign after becoming the British Consul General in Barcelona. Nigel said he felt privileged to be asked to take on this prestigious role. "We have a very busy few years ahead of us, especially as we are approaching the Legion's Centenary in 2021. There will be challenges, but I am looking forward to working to promote the Charity within our District." The new Vice Chairman is Lt Col Pete Lodge MBE, who served for 39 years in the Parachute Regiment, and had previously undertaken the role of District Vice President. Summer Boost

Studio Donations

Over sixteen-hundred euro has been handed over by local entertainer Stevie Spit to the Elche Children’s Home to be spent on the youngsters over the summer holiday. The money was raised at a charity fund-raising night at the Quesada Fish and Chips restaurant. The funds will be used to fund a programme of events for the children for the next three months, including trips to museums, cinemas, theme parks and excursions which they would not be able to normally afford.

Studio 32’s recent production of Mack and Mabel at San Fulgencio’s Cardenal Belluga Theatre raised over three and a half thousand euro for local charities. The group’s chairman Philip Wilson presented a 2,250 euro cheque to Benjamin Villena Rodriguez, President of the San Fulgencio Alzheimer’s Society, as well as 250 euros to Rosa Maria Mira from the San Fulgencio music school, which will go towards buying instruments and music for the students who study there. Philip said: - “In just four years of Studio 32, we’ve raised over 20 thousand euros for local charities, and we will continue to support AFA San Fulgencio and local good causes in the coming year.” The winter production will be the classic Irving Berlin show “White Christmas”, and to get involved with Studio 32 or for advance ticket booking, go to their website, www.studiothirtytwo.org .

Torrevieja’s Alzheimer’s Association recently received a 100 euro donation from the Rojales Neighbourhood Watch Group. Pictured on either side of AFA President Puri Garcia are Pat Philips and Helen Tudor from the group.

A 48-year-old Scottish tourist, who was drugged and robbed during a Costa Blanca holiday, has been told she will not be compensated via her insurance policy, according to a report in the Daily Record. Liz Dowling went to Quesada for a week at the end of February with her husband, and took out insurance cover with Jet2 insurance, after she booked flights with the budget air carrier. A visit to Benidorm with her husband saw a thief spiking her drink, who knocked her to the ground and took her bag. Liz said that she was over three thousand pounds out of pocket, with Jet2 insurance saying that she only had cover for Britain. “I am in shock," said Mrs. Dowling who spoke to the Daily Record. "I’d booked to go abroad so why would they sell me insurance for the UK? I’m stunned their processes did not pick up on this. This has to be made clearer to customers. It’s the final straw after all I’ve been through.” When the Dowlings arrived in Benidorm, they decided to skip the show they had booked at the Benidorm Palace because it was raining and instead went into a bar. “I’d had one drink, a Baileys," Liz told the Daily Record. "There was a Take That tribute band on and I

brought out my tablet to take a picture. I’d just had a couple of sips when I started to feel weird, very unsteady. I got up and walked towards the door to go outside for fresh air." “The next thing I knew someone was trying to grab my bag. I held on to it and put up a fight but he smashed me on the side of the head and made off.”

The police were called and Liz went to hospital. “We never found out what the drug was but my mouth and lips were burned and I couldn’t eat. I also lost teeth", she added. Liz arrived home in Linwood, Renfrewshire three days later after forking out for new flights and an emergency passport. She assumed that she would get

the money back but instead she had to go back and forth with Jet2 for months as they requested receipts and documents. “I sent every receipt I had," Liz said. "I’d lost my smartphone, tablet and jewellery. That, coupled with the £489 cost of dental treatment, £200 for a new flight and accommodation brought the claim to £3,165.

“At every stage they told me they were proceeding with the refund of my expenses." Then towards the end of last month, they told her that she wouldn't get any money back.. “I want my story to be a warning to others," Liz said. "I booked flights to AlicanteElche airport. Why would I want insurance for a trip in Britain?” A spokesperson for

Jet2 told the Daily Record: “We apologise for the time it has taken to handle this claim and for any distress. Our insurance provider acknowledges this has not been handled to the standard we expect." “They have discovered the policy was invalid. However, this should have been communicated to the customer much sooner.”

Best Income for Expats- Update Keith Littlewood, International Financial Adviser at Blacktower, Costa Cálida Here is a brief resume of what is exactly available in the market place for investors, and the rates you can expect to receive. Getting the best income possible from your investments is crucial in the current economic climate. Deposit Accounts – If you are lucky enough to be an existing customer or have an address in the UK, you can have a bank account that offers interest. Currently, the best providers are Hanley Economic Building Society, which is offering a whopping 2.85% on between £100 and £33,000. This is far away out in front of all the providers, but, take note, it is a VARIABLE rate so they could reduce the interest at any time. The strange thing about this is that you must apply online but can only manage your account via post or in-branch – this will be very awkward for many. The best of the rest now is the Newbury Building Society, offering 1.6% on up to £1,000,000 – again, this is a variable rate. If you want a

fixed return and can forgo access, National Savings Guaranteed Growth Bond is paying 2.2% for 3 years. The providers are typically similar and can be compared to suit your needs; I got this information from Comparethemarket.com. If you are limited to a Spanish provider, now you will not be even able to get 1% unless you are willing to tie your money up for 18 months. I saw one client recently who has just had their interest reduced after the 18-month period at 0.5% to 0.01%. Yes, 0.01%, which means you will get the princely sum of €1 interest after one year if you invest €10,000. In the current climate, deposit accounts should be used for emergency money only with the rates offered often not even matching inflation. One way to combat inflation is to put money away for some sort of term. I would be wary of fixing for a long term too, as there is a possibility that interest rates

could soon rise and you might find yourself locked into a poor rate. Spanish Compliant Bonds – Rates vary and depend on the size of investment. Prudential offer a Cautious Fund that is currently paying growth rates of 4.8% for investments in euros and 5.5% for investments in sterling. This type of

investment is great for people wanting medium to long-term income or growth. 5% of capital is allowed to be withdrawn each year penalty-free.These offer very good tax benefits, but are only available if you are a Spanish fiscal resident. Shares – These are a bit of a gamble, but do offer an attractive longer-term approach. Dividends are

paid to give you income (which in the FTSE 100, for example, can get you an average of 2.5%). Growth on your investment can also be provided by the performance of the company of the share you invest in. If you are not an expert, it is often best to use a fund that provides a basket of shares and they have experts to do the picking for you. At Blacktower, we have partnered up with Quilter Cheviot in London to offer the Nexus Dynamic Portfolio. 2016 saw growth on this fund of over 14%.

Painkiller tablets, lilies and chocolate were among the biggest causes of accidental pet poisoning in British homes last year, leading vets are warning. A large increase of incidents involving e-cigarettes and vitamin D supplements were recorded in recent years. Contraceptive pills, artificial sweetener and raisins also harm thousands each year, according to the compiled figures.

DEWY Dewy is a lovely natured ten-month-old dog who is currently in a foster home with lots of other dogs and cats. Dewy is very loving and very eager to please, and is no bother to look after at all in the words of his foster mum. He gets on well with all of the other dogs and cats that he is with, and to learn more, please call PEPA on 650 304 746 or email p.e.p.a.animalcharity@gmail.com

Vets reported almost 11 thousand UK pet poisonings in 2016, mostly involving dogs, cats and rabbits. Gudrun Ravetz, president of the British Veterinary Association said: "E-cigarettes may be harmful if they are ingested by your pet, as e-cigarettes and refills can easily contain sufficient quantities of nicotine to kill a small animal." Some 113 pets were poisoned by e-cigarettes while 148 cases involved vitamin D tablets, figures from the Veterinary Poisons Information Service (VPIS) show - however they remain a small percentage of the overall total.

Animals' bodies break down certain substances in a different way to humans, which can lead to kidney failure. In chocolate, the problem is a naturally occurring chemical in cocoa beans called theobromine. Symptoms can include vomiting, diarrhoea, hyperactivity, tremors, rapid breathing and fits. • Risk assess your home as you would for a baby • Keep potentially dangerous products out of reach such as e-cigarette equipment, drugs, chocolate, grapes, raisins, antifreeze, pesticides and bleach • Do not let animals walk where bleach has just been used • Do not have poisonous plants or cut flowers such as lilies in the house if you have cats inside • Never self-medicate for your pet - a single paracetamol or ibuprofen tablet could kill them • If you think your animal has ingested something poisonous, contact your vet as soon as possible, even if there are no symptoms

Pete Stewart's dog was poisoned after he found and ate "up to four bars of dark chocolate". Mr Stewart, from London, said: "He seemed completely normal until the next afternoon when he started getting quite hyperactive and shaking, so I took him to the vets immediately.

FRANKY Franky is a 15-month- old Maine Coon cross cat who has a beautiful big feather duster type tail. He has been vaccinated, neutered and is negative for feline diseases. JACK

Jack is 10-years-old and apart from a heart murmur, for which he is taking medication, he is a very healthy, active boy. He enjoys walks, lots of cuddles and especially his back scratched. Jack is a very easy dog to look after, is a small crossbreed and is fully vaccinated, micro chipped and castrated. If you think you could give Jack the home he deserves, please contact the SAT kennels in Dolores on 966 710 047 or email info@satanimalrescue.com

"It was pretty horrible, they were really worried - they managed to flush his system but the quantity he had was enough to kill a much bigger dog". There are no official figures for how many animals die from poisoning, although research into about 1,500 cases by the VPIS shows of those brought to a vet, around eight percent sadly end with death.. Fatal poisoning cases are known to have involved insulin, baby wipes, bleach, morphine pesticides and antifreeze.

Seagate Wealth Management Why you should start saving and the three golden rules to make it work Want to beat the pathetic interest paid out on many high street accounts - and turbo-charge your money for the future? Then it’s time to dip your toe into the stock market. You’ll be swapping the relative safety of an ordinary savings account for the stock markets — and to many people this can seem fraught with danger. But it doesn’t need to be. Don't forget to spread your risk Generally, investing means using your money to back something which you think will give you a profit. Most simply, this means putting your money into shares issued by companies that are listed on the stock market. But with all investing there is a risk. That's why many investors tend to hold shares with investment funds. These put your cash into a basket of companies, thereby spreading the chances of share price rises and falls. What is your prime target? Before you start, you need to ask yourself what am I saving for? Is it a rainy day reserve? Or are you hoping to build up a pot of money to supplement your income in retirement? The answers will help you figure out where to put your money - not least because you’ll know how long it will be invested for. As a rule of thumb, you should be looking at 5 years. Then, if you suffer steep or sudden price falls, you give your cash a greater chance of recovery. Don’t be over-zealous Take it steady to start with and don’t be tempted to tinker all the time. If you’re over-zealous, this could lead to you panic-selling your funds if they’re not doing that well in the shortterm. If this all seems a little daunting to deal with on your own, then help is at hand. Torry Fire The main grandstand at CD Torrevieja’s Vicente Garcia stadium which was closed due to safety concerns 18 months ago, has been hit by a small fire that appears to have started in the press area. Local firefighters quickly brought the fire under control last Thursday afternoon, with any flammable materials removed from the area as a precaution. The club said last month that they were planning to return to stadium next season after revamping the dressing rooms, even though the grandstand will be out of commission.

The state of the Torretas area of Torrevieja has been slammed by the opposition Partido Popular on the council, who claim that the mayor José Manuel Dolón and his team have snubbed over 30 letters of complaint during the last two years. PP councillor Sandra Sánchez says that the Torretas have been ignored since Dolón became mayor in 2015, with a long list of issues that needed to be addressed including the maintenance of green areas; signs; communciations; transport; street lighting and rubbish clearance.

A woman felt she was ripped off by the price of a drink at a bar in the northern city of Gijón. and called the local police to complain. The customer thought that she was being overcharged at 4.50€ for a Martini, and demanded to see the price list which the bar owners refused to supply, but instead knocked off 50 cents off her drink. The woman refused to be fobbed off, and called the local police who arrived and told off the bar owner who is required by law to have a drinks tariff on display at all times.

Levelling Up Youngsters in Spain will no longer automatically bear their father’s surname before their mother’s, under a new law being drafted by the Justice ministry, which is aimed at gender equality. The law will require parents to decide within three days of the baby's birth which family surname will come first. If they cannot agree, an official will take the decision for them. Yolanda Besteiro, president of the Federation of Progressive Women, welcomed the measure, which she said “fits with the reality of the times.” “It’s an

advance towards equality, there was no reason that justified the prevalence of the father’s surname beyond the sexist tradition." Parents have since 1999 been able to request that the

mother’s surname goes first, but there is a substantial process that need to be taken, with only around three thousand children going through the procedure last year.

Sibling Death

A Murcia region man has been put behind bars for 19 years, after a jury found him guilty of killing his twin brother at the family home in Cehegin.

37-year-old Juan O.M. said both he and his brother were drug abusers, and that he stabbed his brother in what he claims was self-defence because

he saw him reaching into a pocket. The killing happened after the sibling had been out on a drinking spree, and then started arguing with Juan O.M.

Power Pledge The government has pledged to cut electricity bills as "soon as there is a margin to do so", according to Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy. With warnings of a 10 percent rise in prices this year after steady increases in recent months, Rajoy says that once the country's deficit has reached a target of less that three percent of Spain's Gross Domestic Product, he would look at making cuts in energy bills, as well as reducing income tax. The deficit target for this year is three point one percent by the end of 2018, although Spain has as yet failed to comply with its selfimposed targets and narrowly avoided a massive fine from the EU a few months ago. Even if Spain does meet its targets, this will not be until 2019, meaning it will have taken 10 years to resolve the country's recession-related debt. Rajoy also says that by the year 2020, a total of 20 million people in Spain will be in employment, and says the economy has 'experienced an unprecedented transformation' thanks to his government's reforms since it gained power in November 2011, making Spain 'one of the fastest-

growing economies in the Eurozone'. “As a result, in the first half of this year, Spain will recover the GDP it lost during the financial crisis,” Rajoy claims. Opposition parties like the PSOE and Podemos have a different view of matters pointing out that although employment has increased, the security of contracts and what is paid

left a lot to be desired. Over energy electricity bills, Rajoy said that 'past policies' have caused current problems, but that his cabinet is 'working actively' to ensure the 'components of electricity bills which are subject to State regulation' do not increase. “We will progressively reduce these elements as the margin to do so arises,” Rajoy added.

Racket Rumbled Hundreds of allegedly bogus food poisoning claims made by British tourists staying in hotels on Mallorca are being investigated by a judge in Palma. The news follows a series of calls from hotel associations from across Spain, including the Benidormbased Costa Blanca Hoteliers Association (HOSBEC) for something to be done to stop the practice, which saw English-speaking salespeople openly touting in the resort for clients to make fake claims. Carolina Ruiz, lawyer for the Mac Hotels group said there was plenty of evidence of healthy UK tourists being approached by British

nationals on Mallorca to make a claim, and a team of private investigators hired by the company have handed over a comprehensive dossier to the Palma judge. Ms Ruiz said they told tourists “if they purchased medicine at a chemist, specifically Imodium and Calpol, and kept the receipt,

they would contact them when they returned home to process their claim, feigning a gastric illness caused by the hotel." Two Britons, aged 30 and 29, have been arrested in Mallorca on suspicion of trying to persuade tourists to make bogus claims in this way.

Summer Pudding

Ingredients 600g raspberries 600g strawberries hulled and halved if large 600g blackberries 300g caster sugar Juice of ½ lemon 150ml/ ¼ pt white wine 300ml/ ½ pt water 6 slices of thick cut white bread Fresh jersey double cream, to serve Method 1. Put half the fruits in a large saucepan with the sugar, lemon juice, wine and water. 2. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook for five minutes until softened, stirring occasionally. 3. Lift out the fruit into a sieve using a slotted spoon, strain any liquid back into the saucepan, then put the fruit in a bowl on the side. Allow it to cool (this is so you don’t cook the raw fruits in the hot ones). 4. Reserve 200ml/7fl oz of the fruit syrup for painting the bread.

5. Return the pan to the heat and boil the remaining liquid for 20-25 minutes until syrupy. Allow to cool. 6. Combine the cooled cooked fruit and reduced syrup with the raw fruit. (I like the mixture of cooked and not-cooked for better flavour and texture). 7. Line a 1.8 litre/3 ¼ pt pudding basin with two sheets of overlapping cling film (the edges of the cling film should hang over the top of the basin so that they can enclose the pudding). 8. Cut the crusts off the bread and cut each slice into two rectangles. 9. Thoroughly paint one side of each rectangle with the reserved syrup. 10. Cut and paint a circle of bread that fits the bottom of the basin. Put this in the basin with the red side facing the cling film. 11. Arrange the bread all the way around the inside of the basin, overlapping slightly where the joints meet, with the painted side always facing the cling film. 12. Spoon the fruit into the basin and pack down well. Top neatly with the remaining painted slices of bread. 13. Cover with the overhanging pieces of cling film and place a side plate holding a heavy weight on top to press it down. Put in the fridge and leave overnight. 14. When ready to serve, remove the weight, open the cling film and invert the pudding on to a serving plate. Remove the cling film. Should there be any syrup left, using a pastry brush, daub any pale patches with it. Serve the pudding with cream.

White bread just as healthy as brown bread for some people, study finds Processed white bread may be perfect for a chip butty, but is often shunned by health experts due to its low nutritional value. However, there may be little difference in how white and brown bread affects the body, a new study has claimed. Researchers at Israel’s Weizmann Institute of Science monitored the gut bacteria and levels of fat, cholesterol, glucose and essential minerals such as calcium and iron in 20 healthy people. Half the participants were given a higher-than-average amount of fresh wholewheat sourdough bread to consume for a week, and the others were given the same portion of processed, packaged white bread. “The initial finding, and this was very much contrary to our expectation, was that there were no clinically significant differences between the effects of these two types of bread on any of the parameters that we measured,” said the study’s senior author Professor Eran Segal. “We looked at a number of

markers, and there was no measurable difference in the effect that this type of dietary intervention had.” White bread sales have plummeted by 75 per cent since 1974, while purchases of brown and wholemeal bread, perceived as a healthier alternative, have

risen by 85 per cent, according to the UK National Food Survey. The participants in the randomised study, published in the journal Cell Metabolism, usually ate an average amount of bread – amounting to around 10 per cent of their daily calories. After the week of consuming

either processed white or artisanal brown bread for around 25 per cent of their calories, the subjects took a two-week break and then the diets of the two groups were were reversed. The researchers said the similar overall response to the two types of bread could

be explained because different people react differently to the same foods, depending on the blend of microbes in their gut. “The findings for this study are not only fascinating but potentially very important, because they point toward a new paradigm: different people react

differently, even to the same foods,” said senior researcher Dr Eran Elinav. However, experts have warned the study’s small size and the fact participants only ate each type of bread for a week mean the results should not be considered conclusive. “The findings are clear there was no effect of the type of bread on over 20 clinical measurements,” said Susan Jebb, Professor of Diet and Population Health at the University of Oxford. "It may be that this is too small a group to detect potentially small differences but the fact remains that there was no measureable effect on health.” Professor Jebb warned that the lack of control group in the trial meant there may be other contributing factors to the results. “People participating in trials commonly change their behaviour in a host of ways and if we ask people to change their diet by eating a certain amount of bread they may well make other changes in their diet too,” she said.

Scientists claim breakthrough that could lead to cure for all intolerances Scientists in Australia claim to have discovered what could be a life-long cure for potentially fatal allergies to peanuts, shellfish and other food. The researchers said they had been able to “turn off” the allergic response in tests on mice using gene therapy to desensitise the body’s immune system, and suggested this could also be used to treat asthma. They predicted human trials could begin in just five or six years. Commenting on the study, a leading British expert said scientists had managed to cure allergies in mice before

without this leading to an effective human treatment, but added that the new research could lead to the "Holy Grail" of allergy treatment. He was sceptical about the researchers' claims their technique might be effective against asthma, but Asthma UK said it was "a very exciting step forward". Allergies occur when the immune system over-reacts to something that is usually harmless. In the journal JCI Insight, the Australian researchers reported they had used genetic techniques to prevent this from happening in mice who were

allergic to the protein in egg whites. In a video about the new research, Professor Ray Steptoe, of Queensland University, said: “We can actually turn off the response. What that means is the disease is stopped in its tracks. “What we do is we stop the underlying disease that causes these symptoms. That could revolutionise treatment for severe allergies. It would prevent, we think, some of the life-threatening allergic episodes that occur for people who are allergic to foods for instance.

“That would make a huge difference for people with severe allergies … what that would mean is they would no longer be in fear of lifethreatening incidents if they were to go to a restaurant and be exposed to shellfish and they weren’t aware that was in the food. “Kids with peanut allergies … could go to school without any fear of being contaminated from other kids’ food. “We envisage in the future, with this approach, that they could go to the doctors’ rooms, get a single treatment and that would give them permanent protection from future allergic attacks or asthma attacks.” He added that the researchers hoped human trials could begin in five to six years, estimated it would take a similar period after that for the treatment to be available to patients. Professor Adnan Custovic, an allergy expert at Imperial College London, expressed particular caution about the claim the treatment would be effective against asthma as the condition is caused by a “completely different mechanism” to the one behind food allergies. But he added: “This is one of the potentially exciting approaches to treating allergies.

“It’s sort of approach, where you try to switch off the allergic response, is kind of the Holy Grail, but a mouse model is not the same as a human model. “We can cure allergies in mice but we cannot do it in humans … the mechanisms are not identical. Only time will tell whether this approach will be a viable one.” And he criticised the degree of optimism about the technique expressed by the Australian team. “My real problem with this sort of bombastic statements like this is people with asthma … it gives them hope which very often is not realistic,” Professor Custovic said. However Dr Erika Kennington, head of research at Asthma UK, was more optimistic. “This is potentially a very exciting step forward in asthma research," she said. "Allergen immunotherapy – exposing people to small amounts of an allergen in order to build up tolerance – is currently the only diseasealtering treatment available for asthma but it can have significant side effects in some people, and every other existing asthma treatment and medication works

by reducing or relieving the symptoms. "These findings suggesting a novel approach to reversing allergic disease are therefore very welcome. “We also know that there are certain allergy triggers that cause asthma flare ups, which makes this research important in possibly reducing the risk of life-threatening asthma attacks." But Dr Kennington also pointed to the difference between animal and human trials. “A lot more research is needed to see if the same results can be achieved in people before we can say that a cure for asthma is around the corner," she said. In the study of the allergic mice, the researchers inserted a gene into blood stem cells that controls the immune response to the egg white. The genetically modified cells were then injected into the mice’s bone marrow, where they produced new blood cells that were able to “turn off” the allergic response. The researchers hope to create a similar form of gene therapy that works on humans after a single injection.

Over-medication of Seniors The trend today is that the older we get; the more drugs doctors prescribe for us. There is overwhelming evidence that the older retired population are taking a lot more medications than they need. Very often at MedB clinic, we come across people taking 3 or more different types of high blood pressure medications while suffering from effects of low blood pressure. A leading cause of overprescription is the failure of doctors to check a patient's medication list before adding more drugs, a common occurrence when patients move home and change doctors. Most doctors are also reluctant to discontinue a patient's prescribed medications but will instead add to the existing list. Furthermore, when a pre-

scribed drug is not showing results, doctors will typically add on a different drug. Very commonly patients suffering joint pain are prescribed 3 or more different type of painkillers. Older people also have more health complaints,

and since hospitals typically aim to treat symptoms rather than the cause of illness, the resulting outcome is an over prescription of medications. Not long ago, the medical profession condemned the prescription of many drugs to patients, a

practice it called ' Polypharmacy' which indicated a failure to find the cause of disease. The danger with taking unnecessary drugs is that every chemical drug is considered a poison in the body and must be broken

down and excreted by the detoxification organs of the body - the liver and kidney. Too many drugs will put a strain on these organs causing a build-up of toxins in the body which invariably leads to disease. In addition, as we age, the body

slows down, and the rate of elimination of toxins reduces. GP's today may lack the time to review a patient’s medications, nevertheless patients can help themselves by researching their prescribed medications online. One crucial information about prescription drugs is that they usually have two different names a brand name which is the fancy packet name of the drug, and the generic name, which is the scientific name of the drug. The scientific name will remain the same irrespective of the brand name, and it is this name that should be searched for online. 'Painless' flu vaccine skin patch shows promise "A 'painless' sticking plaster flu jab that delivers vaccine into the skin has passed important safety tests in the first trial in people," BBC News reports. Results of a small phase 1

trial were encouraging, with no serious side effects reported. The patch, around the size of a standard plaster, contains 100 "microneedles" – tiny needles contain-

ing the vaccine, which then dissolve after delivering a dose. The trial including 100 people in the US and aimed to see whether the patch was safe and tolerable and

may be able to deliver flu vaccine as effectively as an injection. People who had the patch found it less painful, but were more likely to get redness and itching where the patch had been applied. There were signs that the patch was just as effective as standard injection in

terms of antibody response, but larger studies will be needed to confirm this. Aside from being less painful, another benefit of the patches is that they don't require refrigeration. This means that they could conceivably be posted to people. They may also be ideal for countries in the develop-

ing world where access to reliable refrigeration is often limited. However, we need to see bigger trials to confirm that the vaccine patch works and is safe. Even if the results are confirmed, it's likely to be several years before flu vaccine patches are in routine use.

Calpe

By Julie Day

warning fires when Berber pirates threatened the coastline, and, later on, the rock became a haven to many smugglers in the area. Today it is possible to climb the Peñón de Ifach, but to reach the summit is a tough feat and you must be relatively fit. Part of the trek upwards is carried out on a footpath, yet the latter stage involves manoeuvring through a dark and slippery tunnel and by holding on to a secured piece of rope. Nevertheless, for those who do complete the challenge, the panoramic rewards at the summit are fantastic.

Calpe is a picturesque coastal town situated in the north of the Costa Blanca in the Valencian province of Alicante. It possesses some of the most beautiful sandy beaches along this stretch of the Mediterranean coast, yet is most well-known for the huge craggy limestone outcrop known as the Peñón de Ifach that rises up from the sea to dominate the scenery for miles around. In the height of the summer, Calpe buzzes with activity as it is a popular resort for tourists to visit and offers much in the way of things to do and places to eat and drink. Calpe also attracts visitors during the off-peak season, who perhaps want to escape the hustle and bustle of their busy lives to spend a quiet and relaxed time surrounded by beautiful nature. Good communication links

Property Property in Calpe comes in a wide range of shapes and sizes, and there is generally something to suit all types of budget. It is perhaps most well-known for its stunning luxury villas with magnificent views of the sea and mountains and well-constructed homes that are easy to immediately fall in love with.

The town boasts good communication links asit is ideally located just off the N332 main road and the A7 motorway, which both lead directly to the Alicante-Elche Airport, the sixth busiest in the country.

History

For those that want to explore the surrounding area, Calpe is a great place to set up base during your stay. Nearby towns and cities worth a visit include Benidorm, Alicante and Denia.

Due to its strategic position on the coast, Calpe has long been a settlement for people from other lands and cultures. It has attracted visitors from many ancient civilizations including the Romans, Celts, Iberians, Moors and Greeks, all of whom have left their mark on this old fishing village that was hugely prosperous centuries ago. This is mainly evident nowadays through Calpe’s gastronomy, culture, traditions, monuments and architecture.

Peñón de Ifach The Peñón de Ifach is not only symbolic of Calpe, it is symbolic of the whole of the Costa Blanca region. This rugged mass of rock, which is geologically related to the Rock of Gibraltar, towers 332m above sea level and today enjoys a peaceful role as a nature reserve housing hundreds of different species of wild flowers, plants and wildlife.

Sightseeing Today, Calpe is a hub for tourists and visitors and has plenty to offer those that love to explore. The town centre is a fantastic mixture of the modern and old, as trendy shops, boutiques, bars and restaurants are peppered with centuries-old churches and Roman ruins.

In days gone by, the town’s inhabitants used to keep watch from the top of the rock and lit Located in the heart of the town centre, right next to the ancient Moorish quarter, are two of Calpe’s most interesting sites. The IglesiaVieja (old church) was built in the 15th century and is the only remaining example of Mudejar-Gothic architecture in the whole of the Valencia Region. Nearby is the Señora de las Nieves Church, which is also well worth a visit. Other interesting sites to see in Calpe are:  Torreón de la Peca (Moorish towers and town walls)  Moorish Quarter  Museo Arqueológico (Discoveries from 4 A.D. – 8 A.D.)  Museo Fester (Depicts the tradition of the Moors and Christians fiestas)  Casa de la Senyoreta  Banyos de la Reina (Remains of an ancient Roman fish farm)  Castellet de Calpe (Moorish castle remains)  Torre del Moli (One of the old flour mills that used to be a watchtower for pirates)  La Lonja (today’s fish market, which holds auctions every Mon-Fri at 3pm)  El Llavador del Font (Old public washhouse)  The salt flats surrounding the Peñón de Ifach Calpe’s beaches One can’t finish describing the many delights of Calpe without mentioning the town’s several magnificent beaches of golden sand that stretch out for 13km along the coast. Whether you just plan on lazing about and soaking up the sun or partaking in some fun and energetic water sports, the beaches in Calpe are perfect for both. In addition, the harbour and marina are ideal places to sit with a good book during the day or to enjoy an evening drink and exquisite meal just as the sun is setting. Whatever you hope to find in the Costa Blanca town of Calpe, it is certain that your expectations will be exceeded, as Calpe really is one of those gems that you are unlikely to forget once you’ve been here.

TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

Hold that front page, as writer Jimmy McGovern gave us a shock in Tuesday’s final episode of the terrific Broken (BBC 1). We actually got a happy ending in a lovely touching final scene that perhaps was too good to be true in a Hollywood movie sense, but who cares? The threads came wonderfully together as you could see the beaming smile come on pained Father Michael’s face at the end of six terrific weeks and once again a stunning performance from newly-married(again!) Sean Bean. We also got two great cameo scenes from Phil Davis as a bookie shop owner with his fruit machines getting smashed to bits, as we all cheered on! Put simply, this was THE new UK drama of 2017 so far, and I cannot see any other newcomers beating it. The great news is that McGovern does wants to do more Broken and there are still some bits of Michael’s past that I was left unclear over, but McGovern says that he’s not sure

You Can’t Beat This!

whether Sean Bean would want to do any more episodes. He’s suggesting a new setting on the same theme, and I’m certain it would work with this kind of material, but Bean’s return would be the icing on the cake. I loved the Doctor Who finale on Saturday (BBC 1), despite some of the awful sound balance between the background music and the cast. Why does this keep on happening? The top treat

and tease was right at the end as the Peter Capaldi version of the Time Lord saw the first incarnation in the shape of the William Hartnell version, as portrayed by David Bradley four years ago in the very entertaining drama An Adventure in Space and Time. That told the story of who the show came to the screen back in 1963, and we are promised more from Bradley and other star cameos in the Christmas

special, where we sadly have to bid farewell to Capaldi’s excellent version of the Doctor. As the decent dramas wind down for the summer break, ahead of the autumn season, well done to More Four to getting the rights to the UK online hit Outlander, which has started airing on a Thursday night. Shown on the Starz channel in the US, Outlander follows the story of Claire Randall (Catriona Balfe), a married

English combat nurse from 1945 who is mysteriously swept back in time to the Scotland of 1743 and the war against the English. Adapted from the novels of Diana Galbadon, this has a lot of charm, humour, and bedroom scenes, with some gorgeous location shoots around the world. The fact that the producers behind The Crown, Left Bank Pictures are one of the driving forces of Outlander, gives you a clue as why it

looks so good, and why viewers have been talking about it since it premiered internationally in 2014. I loved it, and will not be waiting for series two until next year on More Four, especially with the third series launching Stateside in September! Another online treat is the spin-off from Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, which is shown on Netflix in the UK and Spain, but has just started screening series one from 2013 on AMC BT in the UK. This is hilarious and dramatic at the same time, as we follow the chaotic adventures of lawyer Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) who featured in the wonderful Breaking Bad. Though there are some BB references and a familiar face or two from that show, you can come into Better Call Saul completely fresh and enjoy the fun with a razor-sharp script and a top lead performance. I’ve bingedwatched the first five episodes of season one in one session. It’s that entertaining.

ITV commissions seven part drama Vanity Fair A new adaptation of William Makepeace Thackeray’s, Vanity Fair, has been commissioned as a seven-part drama for ITV by the broadcaster’s Head of Drama, Polly Hill. Written by Gwyneth Hughes and produced by leading production company Mammoth Screen, Vanity Fair is being made with Amazon Studios. Olivia Cooke (pictured) - the 23 year old Oldham-born actress and star of Steven Spielberg’s forthcoming film Ready Player One - plays Thackeray’s timeless heroine Becky Sharp. Gwyneth Hughes’ adaptation of Thackeray’s literary classic is set against the backdrop of the Napoleonic Wars, and follows Becky Sharp as she attempts to claw her way out of poverty and scale the heights of English Society. Her story of “villainy, crime, merriment, lovemaking, jilting, laughing, cheating, fighting and dancing”, takes her all the way to the court of King George IV, via the Battle of Waterloo, breaking hearts and losing fortunes as she goes. Polly Hill says “Vanity Fair feels like the perfect classic to adapt for ITV, and

Gwyneth Hughes’ stunning scripts bring the novel to life in a way that will really connect with a modern audience. The question was always who would be our perfect Becky Sharp and that is undoubtedly Olivia Cooke! So we are thrilled she has agreed to play Becky, in what promises to be a very exciting new drama for ITV next year.” Damien Timmer says "We’re so proud to be working with ITV and Amazon on this most glorious of stories – the combination of Olivia Cooke, Gwyneth Hughes and Thackeray will be an irresistible one, and we look forward to watching Becky Sharp conquer the 21st century!" Vanity Fair will be filmed on location in and around London, with additional shooting in Budapest, from September 2017.

ADVICE: Simon was having some trouble ejecting a DVD from his Mac

Q

Hi Richard, not sure whether you have experience of Mac computers or not, most of your answers seem related to Windows computers? I have a problem with my iMac, its running OS X and I don’t seem able to eject the DVD that I inserted about 2 weeks ago! I have tried pressing the eject button on the keyboard, I have also tried dragging the DVD icon on the screen down to the trash bin but nothing seems to work – can you help?

A

Hi Simon, yes we support Mac’s and Linux in addition to Windows computers it’s just that the large majority of emails that we receive are for Windows related problems and therefore that’s why you see more of them printed. With regards to your particular problem, it’s a strange one; usually the “dragging it to the trash can” works fine even if the keyboard button is broken. Firstly you need to make sure that there are no applications using the DVD drive, if they are then this could be the cause of your problem, restart your iMac to ensure that the DVD is not in use. If that doesn’t work then you could try restarting it again but this time whilst holding down the left mouse button, this should force all of your optical drives to be opened and hopefully will eject you disk. Update: Thanks for the advice Richard, you were right, I restarted it holding down the mouse button and out it popped!

Rock On Tommy!

Tiger Woods says he has finished a programme to help him manage his medications, following his arrest in May for impaired driving. The former world number one said he would move forward with his next round of treatment to ease back pain and sleep issues with the help of his physician and relatives. "I recently completed an out-of-state private intensive program," he wrote on Monday on his Twitter account. "I will continue to tackle this going forward with my doctors, family and friends.” Woods did not provide any details of the treatment or type of program and did not say when he expected to return to golf. Woods was arrested on May 29th near his Florida home for impaired driving. A breathalyser test showed no sign of alcohol but a police video showed Woods struggling to

Tommy Fleetwood fired a bogey-free 66 to claim a one-shot victory at the Open de France on Sunday, with the 26-year-old from Southport striking five birdies in a flawless display at Le Golf National to finish one clear of Peter Uihlein and move top of the Race of Dubai standings. Mike Lorenzo-Vera and Alexander Bjork both secured qualification for The Open by joining Thorbjorn Olesen in a share of third, with Ryan Fox a further shot back at six under. Fleetwood will now head into the Open this month in the form of his life after claiming his second victory of the season. He used to sneak on to the Open venue of Royal Birkdale as a child, was 188th in the world last September but hit a career-high 15th in the latest update of the rankings on Monday. Fleetwood has reaped the rewards of returning to his former coach Alan Thompson and followed his second European Tour victory in Abu Dhabi in January by finishing fourth in the US Open last month. “When it all got talked about last year, everybody knew these were the tournaments you wanted to play well in,” Fleetwood said after collecting the trophy and career-best first prize of £915,000. This eclipsed the £850,000 he won by finishing second behind the world No1, Dustin Johnson, in the WGCMexico Championship in March. “To win a Rolex Series event, knowing how big the stature is of everything now, is a big deal for me. I played great today, felt comfy again and it’s always great to test your game and test what you work on every day under the ultimate pressure. “Life’s just been great. I’m engaged, expecting a baby, my fiancée is my manager, my caddie’s one of my best mates in the world. Thommo, I think, is the best coach in the world – everybody around me I have really strong relationships with and when you enjoy doing your job that’s a massive positive.”

answer questions and he said later he did not realise how prescription drugs he was taking might interact. Woods made a comeback from back surgery in December in the Bahamas but has played only twice this year, missing the cut at Torrey Pines and withdrawing from the European Tour's Dubai Desert Classic in February. In April, Woods announced he had undergone his fourth back operation since 2014 to ease back and leg pain and would miss the remainder of the season. Woods, whose 79 career PGA Tour wins are three shy of Sam Snead's all-time record, has not won a major title since the 2008 US Open and has not won any event since the 2013 World Golf Championships Bridgestone Invitational.

Double Podium

Three was the number for the Murcia-based British rider Anthony FordDunn (pictured right on the podium), who finished third in last weekend’s two S4 road class races in the final round of the S4 European S u p e r m o t o Championships in Busca, Italy. That meant he got an overall third position in last

weekend’s event, and he finished in an excellent fourth slot in the final overall championship placings. Both races were keenly contested with just 12 points seperating the top five riders going into Busca. Ford-Dunn was four seconds behind first race winner, Italy’s Kevin Vandi (pictured in the middle),

whilst he was only half a second behind Spain’s Jorge Climent in the second contest. Despite falling in the second race, Honda-rider Vandi got up to complete the course, which was enough to ensure him the overall season title on 123 points, with Ford-Dunn having a final tally of 113 for his fourth placing.

A Very Short Tour

Murcia's Alejandro Valverde underwent a successful operation to fix a broken kneecap he suffered in a crash that knocked him out of the Tour de France on the first day last Saturday. The 37-year-old was taken to a hospital in Dusseldorf after he came down hard on a slippery bend in miserable wet conditions during the opening stage 14km time-trial in Germany. He broke his left kneecap

and suffered a blow to the ribs as well as cuts in the fall. "Valverde was operated on with success at Dusseldorf's University Hospital for the injuries caused by Saturday's fall which forced him to abandon the 2017 Tour de France," said his Movistar team. "He will be off the road for several months whilst he recovers," they added. The team released a picture of a smiling Valverde, who was third overall two

years ago, lying on a hospital bed with two fingers on one hand raised in the air in a V shape. It is the third time Valverde has had to pull out of the Tour following his failure to finish in his first two participations in 2005 and 2006. He was expected to play a pivotal role in helping Tour contender Nairo Quintana in his bid to defeat reigning champion Chris Froome during the Tour's mountain stages.

SAMM Spring Finale

Eight In A Row

Reigning world champion Marc Marquez won Sunday’s German Moto GP for to move to the top of this year's title race, and to win at the track for the eighth successive year. Marquez's run of success at the Sachsenring, near Chemnitz, started in 2010 when he was competing in the 125cc category. He then won in Moto2 in 2011 and 2012 before his streak of five victories in MotoGP. The Spaniard started from pole position and went on to earn his second victory of the season. He held off Germany's Jonas Folger, who was second as he earned a first

podium finish, with Dani Pedrosa third. Marquez has 129 points and becomes the fourth leader of the championship this season, with 10 points separating the top four. Spain's Maverick Vinales, who finished fourth in Germany, is second on 124, while Italy's Andrea Dovizioso dropped from first to third on 123 points after he was eighth at the Sachsenring. Valentino Rossi, of Italy, was fifth and is fourth in the standings on 119 points. “I’m very, very happy”, said Marquez. “I knew before the weekend that this was an important moment in

the Championship and that the Sachsenring was an important circuit for us. It was the place to take a risk if necessary and to try to win. So I’m happy we took these 25 points and the lead in the championship before the summer break.” “The race was very tight. Honestly, before the start I thought I would have to battle with Dani, but actually there was also another very fast opponent. I was very surprised at the beginning to see Jonas there, and I thought he might stay in between with the other riders, but he actually remained there! He was quite a tough opponent!”

The final session of the Sailing Association Mar Menor (SAMM) Spring Series at Los Narejos produced some fine racing, with the first race taking place in gentle six to eight knot winds. Six boats took part, with the winners being Jack, Bob and Jeff in the Gamba ‘Shoestring Cuatro’ (pictured above). The second race offered a slight increased breeze with some close tussles going on, especially between Norman in his Laser Radial; John in his Quba and George and Jack in the Gamba Shoestring Cuatro, who all finished within a minute of each other. The Areaz 20 Levanter, a

new boat to the fleet led all the way and finished first on the water but was placed fourth after the handicaps were applied. That race was

won by John (pictured below) in the RS Quba Lola. The autumn SAMM series is scheduled to start on Sunday September 10th.

Fran Remains

CD Almoradi’s captain Fran Ortiz is to stay with the club after their relegation to the Preferente division, with the new campaign starting in September. The skipper, pictured with club president Francisco Albaladejo, is the latest player to be retained by new coach , Juanan Cases. Momo Outtara has also signed up for another season.

Signed Up

Morata Meeting

Representatives for Alvaro Morata met with Real Madrid on Monday morning to discuss the striker's future. Manchester United wanted to sign the Spanish international to replace Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but the Old Trafford formally dropped their interest yesterday, after agreeing a fee with Everton for Romelu Lukaku (see back page). Morata's agent, Juanma Lopez, and his father, Alfonso Morata, were at the Bernabeu for a 50-minute meeting with Real about the 24-year-old, who has been holidaying in Ibiza and Sardinia after marrying model Alice Campello in Venice last month. Talks between United and Real had been ongoing for over a month but the two sides were unable to agree a fee, with Morata valued at close to 80 million euros by Real. Real coach Zinedine Zidane wants the former Juventus striker to stay but the player is desperate for more game time, which the Frenchman can't guarantee.

Saul’s Super Deal Another raft of players have committed themselves to another season with Preferente side CD Thader, who made it to the play-off’s against Paiporta in May. Amongst those signing up are Josico (pictured above), along with Noe and Arias, in addition to youth player Jose María, who had some first-team experience in the last campaign. The club have also announced plans to create a CD Thader B team.

Life Is Good

Gareth Bale is loving life in Spain and has no intention of leaving Real Madrid and returning to the Premier League, according to Sky Sports. The news comes after renewed media speculation that the Wales winger would be heading for Manchester United should Real be able to sign Kylian Mbappe from Monaco. Mbappe has emerged as a key target for a number of Europe's leading clubs this summer, with Arsenal and Liverpool also reported to be interested in the 18-year-old France international. The La Liga title holders have made it clear that they have no intention of letting Bale leave the Bernabeu, regardless of their other transfer activity this summer. Bale has spent the last four seasons in Spain after leaving Spurs at the end of the 2012-13 season for what was then a world record fee of £85.3m. He has since won three Champions League titles, the most recent when Real beat Juventus at Cardiff's Principality Stadium.

Cut Price Costa

Coming Down

Just 24 hours after a small fire hit CD Torrevieja’s grandstand at the Vicente Garcia stadium (see page 14), Torrevieja council have announced that the unsafe structure is to be demolished. A tender has been awarded for the work, whilst as reported in The Courier last week, the club will be returning to the ground next season after playing at the adjoining Nelson Mandela stadium, with the building of new dressing rooms for the players and match officials.

Saul Niguez has committed his future to Atletico Madrid by signing a new nine year deal until 2026. The 22-year-old has emerged as one of the most exciting midfield talents in Europe over the past two seasons, and was a key player during Atletico's run to the Champions League semi-finals last season. He played 53 games for Atletico last season, scoring nine goals, four of which were in the Champions League. "I am very happy because at Atletico we are a family and there is no better place to be," Saul said in a statement on the club website. Saul starred for Spain at the recent European U21 Championship, finishing as the tournament's top scorer with five goals.

Atletico Madrid are pushing ahead with trying to bring back Diego Costa to the club, as he’s not expected to link with Chelsea for pre-season training. UK newspaper reports suggest that Atletico are only offering around 24 million euros with add-ons, which is less than a third of the 80 million euro that was offered by the Chinese Super League outfit Tianjian Quanjian in January. Atletico are supposedly hopeful that a deal for Costa can be done later this month, with the 28-year-old expected to spend the first half of the season training with the club while they wait for their transfer ban to be lifted in January.

Lionel’s Deal

Lionel Messi has agreed to a three-year contract extension that will keep him at Barcelona through to 2021. Messi will sign a new deal "in the coming weeks" that will tie him to Barcelona through to June 30th, 2021, the club announced on Wednesday. The deal will see him paid over half a million euro per week. His current contract is set to expire at the end of the 201718 season. Barcelona released a statement in English calling Messi "the best player in history, who has played his full professional career at Barca and has led the team to an era of extraordinary success, the likes of which has never been seen in world football." The gushing statement added: "Now, at 30 years of age, Messi has completed 13 seasons with the first team and, with his new deal, will remain for a further four.” "But Leo Messi will not stop there - the Argentinian is in one of the best moments of his career and still has a lot more left to give, which is music to the ears of all Barca fans who will get to continue marvelling at his greatness for at least another four years." Messi, who turned 30 last month, has scored a club record 507 goals in 583 matches. His titles with the club include four Champions League trophies, eight La Liga titles and five Copa del Rey titles. Messi arrived at Barcelona's football academy from Argentina at age 13. He made his debut with Barcelona's first team four years later in 2004, and has gone on to establish himself as one of the best to ever play the game, winning FIFA world player of the year five times. He will soon start his 14th season with the club. The announcement came just days after Messi married (pictured below) his childhood sweetheart Antonella Roccuzzo, mother of their two sons.

Cav’s Call

Mark Cavendish has appealed for an end to "vile and threatening" social media comments to him and to his family after his Tour de France exit. The 32-year-old collided with world champion Peter Sagan before hitting the barriers in a sprint finish on stage four in Vittel on Tuesday. Sagan left the Tour after being disqualified for causing the crash which ended Cavendish's race. "Please know that it's sport and I have a family," Cavendish said on Twitter. "Everyone is entitled to their opinions. But vile and threatening comments on social media to myself and my family aren't deserved." Speaking in a video posted on Wednesday, the Isle of Man rider continued: "I'm paying now as a 32-yearold for the attitude I had as a kid. Unfortunately this will never leave me and I'll always deal with the brunt of people's personal opinions. "But I'd ask you all to that respect that and please not send threatening or abusive language to myself and my family. "Thank you to everyone for your well wishes and I hope you continue to enjoy the rest of the Tour de France." Cavendish said Slovak Sagan, 27, elbowed him during the sprint finish to stage four but later said he had "no hard feelings" towards the rider, adding that he had sorted things out with him, and remain friends. “I’ve missed the race that I’ve built my career around. Unfortunately these things happen in cycling, especially in the chaotic finale of the sprint, but there’s no hard feelings between Peter and I. We are friends, he apologised after and called me in the evening as well. That’s a measure of the man he is.” Sagan's Bora-Hansgrohe team protested against his disqualification, but race organisers would not allow an appeal. The Tour continued on Wednesday as Britain's Chris Froome took the yellow-jersey after finishing second behind Italy's Fabio Aru on stage five. There was early drama in Saturday’s opening time trial when Murcia’s Alejandro Valverde crashed out with a broken kneecap (more on page 45).

Rivals Return

This Sunday’s Austrian F1 Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring returns to the site of yet another controversial collision between Lewis Hamilton and a fellow title contender, on the back of Hamilton’s hit by Sebastian Vettel last time out in Baku. Nestled in the hills of Spielberg, Austria, the Red Bull Ring has had several stints in F1, hosting eighteen races between 1970 and 1987 and then seven more between 1997 and 2003, before returning in 2014. Last year at Spielberg, nursing a brake issue and under heavy pressure from Lewis Hamilton, the last lap saw Nico Rosberg run deep into the first corner. This put him at a disadvantage for the long, uphill run to turn two, where Hamilton made up considerable ground and pulled alongside. Taking the defensive line Rosberg braked, looked at the apex, then carried on straight ahead. Figuring Rosberg had made at least an attempt to make the corner Hamilton turned in, only to find Nico Rosberg’s car was there. The pair made contact, with Hamilton running over and breaking Rosberg’s front wing. The battle wasn’t over yet though. Having run wide Hamilton tried to rejoin the track, only to find Rosberg was there as well, blocking him from rejoining. He eventually got back on and passed Rosberg, as did Max Verstappen and Kimi Raikkonen. Rosberg managed to crawl back home in fourth, with the Austrian crowd roundly booing Hamilton when he stepped onto the podium. This weekend’s GP will show if the rift between the fiercely competitive multiple world champions Hamilton and Vettel has really been healed, or whether the pressure of race day could bring it back out into the open on Sunday. Vettel, who has four world titles to Hamilton’s three, escaped further punishment from the FIA this week after they ordered a review of his deliberate collision with Hamilton at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix two weeks ago. An irate Vettel swerved into Hamilton, albeit at slow speed, because he thought the British driver had slammed his brakes on recklessly late, right in front of him, seconds earlier. Having met with Vettel and Ferrari’s team principal Maurizio Arrivabene at its headquarters in Paris, and with the addition of an apology from the German driver on his personal website, FIA president Jean Todt deemed that the time penalty given to Vettel during the race was sufficient punishment. Hamilton may feel that Vettel got away lightly considering that the difference in points remains the same at 14, and race fans will be intrigued to see what happens this weekend.

LUKAKU THE FINAL SHOWDOWN DEAL

Manchester United have agreed a fee of around £75m with Everton for striker Romelu Lukaku. The 24-year-old Belgium international scored 25 Premier League goals last season. United, who have been chasing Lukaku for most of the summer, will not now be pursuing their interest in Real Madrid's Alvaro Morata (see page 46). The move for Lukaku is not connected to talks aimed at taking United forward Wayne Rooney to Everton. The striker was sold to Everton for £28m by Mourinho during the Portuguese manager's second spell in charge of Chelsea in 2014.

CLEAN FARAH

Mo Farah has stressed that he has "never failed a blood test" following the release of hacked documents which appear to show his test results once caused suspicion. Hackers Fancy Bears published documents on Wednesday which state Farah returned a sample which needed further testing. The data goes on to show Farah was then cleared when his results were later viewed as "normal". "We have never been informed of any of Mo's test results being outside of the legal parameters," a spokesperson said.

The British and Irish Lions have a chance to "leave a legacy" by winning tomorrow’s decisive third Test against the All Blacks (kick-off 9.35 am, live on Sky Sports), says head coach Warren Gatland. Victory for the Lions at Eden Park, Auckland would seal a first series win over New Zealand in 46 years. And Gatland says his side are just "scratching the surface" in terms of its potential. "We have got another level in us, and it's incredibly exciting," he said. "We think this team has got better and better and will get better on Saturday. "I think you should all be excited about what should be one hell of a Test match." While Gatland says the players cannot become "emotionally too involved", he says they will be aware of what is stake as the Lions look to match the achievements of the greats of 1971. "They have an opportunity to leave bit of a legacy don't

they? 11 tours of New Zealand and the Lions have only won here once," Gatland added. "It's a chance to do something special. You have those moments in your life and you don't want those moments to pass you by.” "It's a pressure that you relish. It's why you do all those hours of preparation, because you want those big moments in sport.” Gatland has named the same 23 for tomorrow’s Test, and says he was not tempted to make any changes from the squad that won in Wellington, once all the players were declared available for selection. But while the All Blacks assistant coach Wayne Smith says his side "do a lot of work" on the opposition before a game, the Lions have taken a different approach this week. "We haven't even spoken about them," Gatland said. "It feels a little bit ironic, a bit strange, almost like a role reversal.”

THE BEST OF BRITISH There’s a string of British stars on parade at Wimbledon today led by Andy Murray and Johanna Konta, with Heather Watson’s progress making it the first time that two British women have made it into the third round since Jo Durie and Anne Hobbs back in 1986, writes ALEX TRELINSKI. Murrya, the Wimbledon champion and world number one, with no obvious signs of his nagging hip problem, will take on clay specialist and 28th seed, Fabio Fognini. "I have moved well in the first couple of matches, it hasn't affected me. I have been getting good practices in and it feels good. Hopefully it stays that way”, said Murray.

Slovenian-born Aljaz Bedene will be up against the experienced Gilles Muller from Luxembourg, after a Wednesday win in four sets against Bosnia’s Damir Dzumhur. Jo Konta’s epic encounter against Croatia’s Donna Vekic enthralled Centre Court fans on Wednesday, and she has what appears to be a routine clash today against the unknown Greek player, Maria Sakkari. Wild card Heather Watson is showing the class again that she is capable of producing after a poor period for her, and she ruthlessly disposed of Latvia’s 18th seed Anastasija Sevastova on Wednesday to earn a clash today against ex-world number one Victoria Azarenka.
