A THEFT TOO MANY

42-year-old Alicante man, who is accused of a string robberies on holiday homes across the Costa Blanca and Mar Menor, has been arrested by the Guardia Civil in the Cartagena area. The serial stealer was wanted on an arrest warrant issued by a Torrevieja court and is said to have plundered from at least 30 properties on the Alicante Province coast, as well as the Mar Menor area taking in La Manga, Playa Paraiso, and Playa Honda. His method of operation worked to a pattern where he would strike in the night by forcing a lock to gain entry to an empty house. He then did his his best to make sure that lock was put back together again to avoid any suspicion from neighbours of a break-in having taken

place. The Guardia spotted the burglar in the Playa Pariaso

area and he was collared as left a building that he had just robbed, with a number

of stolen items found to be in his possession at the time of his arrest.

THE SOUND OF SILENCE

here’s been no news over why a tender has still not been advertised to finish the incompleted Emergency Centre for the Orihuela Costa based at La Zenia, despite a promise from Orihuela council’s emergency co-ordinating councillor Victor Valverde late last autumn that the tender for the project “should be advertised and awarded by next summer”. Valverde, along with Orihuela council technical officials, recently held a meeting with the Valencia region’s director general for

emergencies, José María Ángel, with Valverde saying:- “We’ve submitted all the necessary changes for the project which the director general and his team have accepted”. These were announced in May including a helicopter landing pad and better rest facilities for shift workers. Valverde or María Ángel had nothing to say in an Orihuela council news release as to what the new timetable for tendering the work is. It appears to be yet another delay in the project as only last June, María

Ángel visited the site at La Zenia and said that a tender would be advertised last September with a view to finishing the work this year.

Once the tender is awarded, work to finish off the centre should only take around six months, according to officials.

Four hectares of scrubland in the Guardamar area caught fire on Sunday afternoon, with firefighters from Almoradi and Torrevieja supported by a helicopter and two seaplanes to bring the blaze under control.

The fire started after 1.00 pm some 20 metres from the N-332 highway close to the roundabout exit for the Santa Ana industrial estate, though the blaze was far enough away for the road to remain open.

A 69-year-old Russian man drowned when he was having a morning dip at a Torrevieja beach. The incident happened at Playa del Cura at around 8.30 am on Sunday with emergency services unable to revive the swimmer. Also on Sunday, an unconcious man, said to be in his sixties, was pulled out of the water at Playa del Barco Perdido de la Manga

by the Entremares hotel. He was revived and taken to Los Arcos hospital in San Javier. That day also saw a three-year-old girl get in difficulties at Los Narejos beach in Los Alcazares, after she lost conciousness in the water. After being treated by paramedics, she was moved to the Virgen de la Arrixaca hospital in Murcia City.

A Vueling plane about to fly to Rome from AlicanteElche airport ended up going nowhere, as it collided with a service vehicle last Friday. 153 passengers had to be removed from the plane before eventually being transferred, some seven hours later, to a replacement aircraft. The plane was moving away from the terminal

towards the runway when it hit the stationary car just before 11.30 am, with Vueling saying that the vehicle should not have been anywhere near the plane. The collision caused damage to one of the engines, as well as the fuselage, with the incident having a knockon effect that caused delays across the entire airport schedule.

12 kilometres of beaches in the San Pedro del Pinatar area are being patrolled until September by a team of police officers using pedal power. The eight-strong Beach Patrol Unit proved to be a success when it was launched last year, and will

be on duty for ten hours a day dealing with a variety of matters from dogs being illegally on the beach through to illegal hawking and camping. The team assisted nearly three thousand people with inquiries last summer, as well as rooting illegal selling on two beaches.

A two million euro tender has been advertised for converting part of the busy CV865 Santa Pola to Elche road into a dual-carriageway. The Valencian government says that the plans, which have been on the table for some time, should see work start by the end of the year, and be finished within 18 months. The section of the CV-865 to be upgraded will be between La Vereda de Sendres close to the Rio Safari entrance, linking up to the existing dual-carriageway stretch towards Santa Pola, with the project completed by the summer of 2019.

Life Savers A woman was stopped from choking to death at her San Isidro home, thanks to the prompt action of two Guardia Civil officers. The Dolores-based officers were on patrol last Friday when they noticed a large number of people outside the 48-year-old's home, and they asked for medical assistance. The men went inside and saw her on the floor, with her daughter trying to revive her, after she had taken "a large amount" of food to her mouth. The Guardia officers discovered she had no pulse, and so they performed procedures with the help of a family member which got her breathing again. An ambulance then transferred her to hospital.

San Juan Fun

The lifeguard service for Santa Pola's beaches started a fortnight late last Saturday, due to delays in the council awarding a two year contract. The tender was eventually awarded to the Cruz Roja who will provide cover at Santiago Bernabéu, Gran Playa, Levante, Tamarit, Varadero and Playa Lisa between 11.00 am and 7.00 pm. The service will run until September 24th, with an additional weekend service running until mid-October due to the lateness of the contract award. Beaches councillor Mercedes Landa said that the delay in settling the contract was down to the strict demands of the tender. Hundreds of people took to the beaches of the Costa Blanca and Mar Menor last Friday night to celebrate the San Juan festival. As is the tradition, large bonfires were lit around the

coast, as well as inland, with the main concentration in the Torrevieja area being on Cura beach (picture from Objectivo Torrevieja), along with Los Náufragos. Events took a more disturbing turn down south in

Landa claims the quality of the lifeguards is higher than ever, with ten of them speaking excellent English to deal

with the influx of tourists, in addition to two highly qualified nurses being based in the area.

Extensive control work is being carried out to stop insects and rats spreading across the Orihuela Costa during the summer, according to Orihuela health councillor Noelia Grao. Grao said that the council

had a contract with the Lokimica company to deal with pests, with the most common problems being cockroaches and rats, with a greater amount of reported sightings on the Orihuela Costa due to the number of

homes being returned to, after being unoccupied during the off-peak season. Anybody who has a pest problem can call the health department of Orihuela council on 965 305 983 and report the issues.

The largely unused International Auditorium in Torrevieja has been guaranteed at least 50 music and theatrical shows over two years in a one point six million euro deal struck between the Valencian Government and the Cartagena-based company, Sonora Producciones. The deal, reported in the

La Mata's weekly Wednesday market is to move some 500 metres to a new site, after the Coastal Agency ordered the change due to the risk of

Vendors Verdict A Torrevieja judge has handed down nine month jail sentences to three unlicensed street hawkers that injured local police officers, who were trying to stop their illegal hawking in Torrevieja back in the summer of 2013. A group of Senegalese men were detained four years ago, as the police tried to seize items that were being sold on the Paseo Juan Aparicio. The vendors then grabbed chairs from nearby cafes and restaurants, throwing them at the officers, injuring seven of them, as well as damaging several police vehicles.

High Quality

Despite all of the Mar Menor beaches losing their coveted Blue-flag status earlier this year due to water pollution issues, 20 beaches in the area have been awarded the Q- quality mark for being user and touristfriendly. Factors like cleanliness, accessibility; first-aid

access, and tourist information come into play for the awards with the San Javier beaches at Castillicos, Mistral (pictured), Pedruchillo, Colón and Barnuevo all being recognised, whilst the San Pedro del Pinatar awards go to Villananitos and La Puntica beaches.

Guardia Civil officers intercepted some unusual suitcase contents belonging to a Dutch national intending to fly from Alicante-Elche airport to his home country. Without going through a customs check, the traveller was discovered to have the head and parts of the legs of a mouflon wrapped in plas-

tic. A mouflon is a member of the wild sheep family and was the "trophy" in a hunt that the man had taken part in Ayora on the borders of Alicante and Albacete provinces, Officers told the man he was breaking health laws in trying to transport the mou-

flon in its plastic packaging due to the heat, and they handed it over to the Santa Faz sanctuary in Alicante. The Dutchman was also discovered not to have a hunting license, let alone any permission to hunt the mouflon breed, and now faces a variety of charges in relation to his find.

On Patrol

Water Worries

Domestic water supplies have been guaranteed in the Vega Baja region until at least the end of September, but the president of the Segura Hydrographic Confederation (CHS), Miguel Ángel Ródenas, has said there may be problems during the autumn. Drought conditions are worsening according to Ángel Ródenas, with reserves at La Pedrera reservoir falling by a third in the last 12 months. He has however emphasised that home supplies are prioritised over other sectors like agriculture.

Elche’s local police are doubling their patrols over their next two months in the Arenales del Sol, La Marina, and El Altet beach areas, with extra checkpoints to be

introduced to stop motorists from drink-driving or getting behind the wheel with drugs in their system. The amount of traffic increases by up to 40 percent in the high sea-

son in the coastal area of the Elche municipality, and officers will also be checking that speed limits are adhered to, as well as the general rules of the road.

Southern Blaze

More than 1,500 people in southern Spain were evacuated on Sunday as a precautionary measure after flames from a forest fire entered the Donana National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site famed for its biodiversity. Many of those evacuated were staying at a campsite in the park,

according to the deputy head of the regional environment protection authority. The fire broke out on Saturday night near the town of Moguer, and encroached on the park in the southern region of Andalucia by Sunday morning, Several homes near Moguer were also

evacuated. Donana National Park is home to a wide variety of ecosystems and animals, including the highly endangered Iberian lynx and the Iberian imperial eagle. It is also an important stop for migratory birds traveling between Africa and Europe.

A Test Of Honesty

A forgetful motorist in northern Spain left 10 thousand euro in notes on the roof of his car and forgot about it until he set off, with some four thousand euros being blown away and taken by people in the area. The man drove down a road between O Lapido and Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, and it was not until his son told him about the cash that he stopped the car. He got out and retraced his steps, noticing a 'long queue of vehicles' behind his car. Their occupants had got out and stuffed as many

notes as they could in their pockets, with witnesses spotting a coach driver who had got out of her vehicle and scooped up several notes. She and several other people are being investigated by the Guardia Civil since keeping cash or valuables found in public and not handing them in is a criminal offence in Spain. Not everyone who picked up the bank notes was 'dishonest', according to the Guardia, with many people taking them back to the driver, with just over six thousand euro being recovered.

Coming Out

The crooked ex-Mayor of Torrevieja, Pedro Hernรกndez Mateo, is scheduled to be released from Campos del Rio prison in Murcia next month, after completing a three year jail sentence that was handed down to him for criminal corruption charges whilst in public office. Mateo was the Partido Popular mayor for 23 years until 2011, and was convict-

ed of breaking the law over the awarding of a multi-million euro waste collection contract in 2004. The ex-Mayor, who was also barred from public office for 11 years and fined 10 and a half thousand euro, is to be freed on Friday July 28th, though he has been returning to the Torrevieja area recently on day and weekend release passes.

Elaine’s Gift

The Rojales-based Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre is getting ever closer to reaching the target of 20 thousand euro to build a new secure boundary wall, which will protect the animals and the charity’s equipment from unwanted visitors. Tireless fundraiser Elaine Sissons raised the best part of a thousand euros at the gruelling Tough Mudder endurance event in the UK last month, and with other donations coming in, the pot now stands at over 17 and a half thousand euro. Elaine came in person to this month’s Open Day at the centre to make the presentation to the Centre co-founder Sue Weeding, and shows no sign of slacking as she’s now set on climbing Peru’s Machu Picchu to raise more money for the charity.

The Stagestruck Theatre Group has been continuing to hand out the proceeds from their recent production of Carry On Pompeii at San Fulgenio’s Cardenal Belluga theatre. The bulk of what was raised from the show, namely three thousand euro, was handed over to the Alzheimer’s Association in Torrevieja (AFA). As reported in last week’s Courier, a 400 euro donation has been made to Age Concern Costa Blanca South; 100 euros to the Life’s Too Short charity; and 500 euros each to the Cardenal Belluga Theatre and to the San Fulgencio Music School (pictured below). The next Stagestruck production will be their annual pantomime, which this year will be Babes in the Wood.

Squatter Owner

A Barcelona woman has become a squatter in her own home after finding out that her tenant was using the tourism rental website Airbnb to illegally sublet the flat in the city’s fashionable Barceloneta area. Montse Pérez saw the ad for her bijou 32-squaremetre apartment near Barcelona’s beach on Airbnb and decided to pose as a tourist, renting out a night from the imposter ‘host’ and

barring herself inside her own property. “We had no choice but to reoccupy our flat and change the lock,” Ms Pérez told the newspaper La Vanguardia, adding that her lawyer had said that it would take a year to expel her fraudulent tenant through the courts process. Ms Pérez explained that seven weeks ago she had let the apartment to a 26-yearold man with double Russian

and Chilean nationality, who said he worked as a financial advisor with a British company that had relocated to Barcelona. “He showed me a document saying his salary was €3,000 a month, so I thought OK, no problems here. Well, I was wrong,” said Ms Pérez, who was charging €950 a month for the apartment. Ignoring a clause in the contract expressly forbidding

subletting, Ms Pérez’s supposedly bona fide tenant wasted no time in putting the flat up for rent, at €200 a night in June and rising to €250 for the peaks months of July and August, meaning he could make up to €7,500 a month. Ms Pérez said that she contacted Airbnb, but the company said that all it could do was “mediate between me and the host”. In the meantime, she saw

how the name of the contact host for tourists entering the flat – converted into space for four with the addition of a sofa bed – changed three times “from Shairgei to Andrei and Eduard”, suggesting a possible organised network of fraudsters. A spokesman for Barcelona council said inspectors had visited Ms Pérez and assured her that her fake tenant will be

pursued and will face a fine of between €60,000 and €600,000. Airbnb said it had suspended the listing of Ms Pérez’s flat while it looked into the the dispute between landlady and tenant. "We ask all hosts to certify they have permission to list their space and remind them to check and follow local rules before they list,” the company added.

Shark Alert

A Valencia area beach was cleared last Friday after a shark was spotted in the waters. Bathers were ordered to get out of the waters of La Patacona beach in Alboraia, after lifeguards sighted a one and a half metre long shark. Sharks are occasionally sighted in the Mediterranean and survive by eating small fish. British newspapers got

exercised over the subject last weekend about reports over a two-metre long shark that "terrified" bathers on Mallorca. A blue shark came close to the shore in Illetas in the Magaluf area on Saturday, and it popped again up further down the coast at Cala Major the following day. It was then located with a serious head wound,

probably caused by a harpoon, and had to be put down. An 82-year-old Ibiza holidaymaker suffered a two inch gash after getting nipped by a shark last month. Last year The Courier reported on the case of a 40year-old swimmer being bitten by a blue shark at Arenales del Sol.

Early Start

The El Corte Inglés department store chain, with outlets in Alicante, Elche, and Murcia City has brought its summer sale forward for the first time ever. Reductions are set to kick in from today, with the summer and winter sales periods stretching longer and

starting earlier every year. Outlets that have already started their sales include Cortefiel, Springfield, H&M and underwear firm Women's Secret, plus designer chain Bimba & Lola. An extra 155 thousand staff will be taken on by

stores across Spain for the summer sales period according to recruitment agency Adecco, who claim a seven percent rise in temporary positions compared to last summer. The average spend per head is said to be 149 euro according to a retail website.

DEBUNKING THE MYTHS: RESIDENCY By Richard Samuels, International Financial Adviser, Blacktower Financial Management British people make up one of the highest percentages of expats in the world, estimated by the World Bank that between 4.5 million and 5.5 million Britons live abroad - around 7-8% of the UK population. However, Spain has become a firm favourite for people choosing to settle down overseas. The United Nations Population Division found that over 381,025 British official expats were in Spain during 2013, with even more who are unofficially living ‘under the radar.’

As of writing, it is unclear what impact the Brexit negotiations will have on the rights of British Expats both here in Spain and the rest of the EU. Perhaps the best advice for British Expats who intend to stay in Spain would be to ensure you have got your Padron and Residencia in place which will surely strengthen your position as to your rights as a Spanish Resident regardless of Brexit. A review of your financial position would be a sensible option in view of the above or if you would like advice on any of the above issues you can contact me on

But choosing to relocate to Spain can mean new complications for Brits. Knowing the difference between domicile and residence is important for tax purposes, making an assumption could lead to incorrect tax declarations which can lead to penalties and heavy tax bills. Even if you don't need a visa to stay in Spain, you will need an NIE No. (similar to a National Insurance No.) and if planning to stay here permanently then you should apply for Residencia. These make you a legal resident in Spain and are necessary for employment and other matters. Permanent residents will first need to register on the “Padron” at the local Town Hall before applying for their Residencia. The Padron is similar to the Electoral Roll in the UK and allows you to vote in local and EU elections. Until recently “Padrons” were relatively easy to obtain as central government funds are allocated based on the numbers registered to each municipality. The rules have been tightened up since Brexit and qualifying criteria can vary between different Town Halls. Once you have your Padron you can apply for your Residencia. A person who applies for full residency can enjoy many benefits. For example, if you purchase then sell your home in Spain you may be liable for capital gains tax if you have not applied for residency. You will also be able to apply for a Spanish driving licence, Pensioner’s card and a SIP card giving you access to the State Health system. However, the main test for Tax Residency is the 183-day rule. This means that if you are present in Spain for more than 183 days in the Spanish Tax year (lasting from January to December) you will be deemed to be a Tax Resident. A tax resident is liable for income tax on their worldwide income and would also be liable for other taxes including Spanish

richard.samuels@blacktowerfm.com.

Succession (Inheritance)Tax. These days do not have to be consecutive. This rule applies even if you have not applied for or have received your Residencia. It is possible to be liable for tax in both countries. However, there is a Dual Tax Treaty with Spain which your Tax adviser would utilise to ensure you do not pay the same tax twice; although you may be liable for any difference. Domicile is a separate legal term in the UK and, strangely, is not determined by where you live. A domicile is the country in which a person officially has as their natural home, or a substantial connection with, and could eventually return to if residing abroad. When you're born, you're automatically assigned to the same domicile as your father if your parents were married and this is defined as your domicile of origin. Domicile has a huge bearing on Inheritance Tax in the UK as UK domiciles are liable for UK Inheritance tax on their worldwide assets. Of course, there are many questions and worries circulating about Brexit, and what it would mean for tax-paying expats. The term EU Citizenship is used frequently. Citizenship is effectively the same as Nationality and is generally where you were born or hold a Passport. Whilst Britain remains in the EU, British Nationals are afforded EU Citizenship which confers the same rights as any National in any of the EU member states.

UK hospitals should let more dogs and other animals on to wards and even into operating theatres to help patients, the Royal College of Nursing says. The call comes after the RCN collected scores of anecdotes of therapy-animals, and sometimes pets, helping recovery. Some young patients found having trained dogs accompany them to the anaesthetic room reduced their anxiety before and after surgery. The RCN is working on national advice to encourage more animal visitors. In a recent RCN survey of 750 nursing staff, 82% said animals could help patients be more physically active and 60% said they believed animals improved physical recovery. But many nurses said animals were not allowed where they worked. The main reasons behind this, according to Amanda Cheesley, who is putting together nationwide guidelines on animals in hospitals, are concerns that furry companions spread infections and other "myths around the dangers" of allowing animals on wards. But she says she knows of examples where hospitals allowed dogs and other animals on wards safely, making a "remarkable difference." She mentioned one young cancer patient who was too scared to have a life-saving procedure in theatre. The patient finally had the treatment she needed after a therapy dog accompanied her to the anaesthetic room and stayed with her afterwards. Ms Cheesley said: "The dog calmed her down, making it so much less traumatic for her and her parents. Ultimately it allowed the staff to do a life-saving job." Another example involved a man who had had a brain injury that left him with difficulty walking. After he was discharged, he found going for a walk with his pet donkey helped with his balance and, over time, he was able to walk more easily. Ms Cheesley says more trained animals could help with mobility and physiotherapy - for example, by asking patients to walk towards a dog at the end of a walkway and gradually increasing the distance. Dogs could also help divert a patient's attention - for exam-

ple, if a child is scared of needles, a therapy dog could act as a distraction. To collect more evidence on the benefits and challenges of bringing animals on to wards, dog handler Lyndsey Uglow who has worked with therapy-animals in hospitals for five years, has started a research project at Southampton Children's Hospital. Together with Ms Uglow, the Humanimal Trust, infection control specialists and hospital managers, the RCN aims to put together simple rules that could work across wards, clinics and hospices. Concerns that pets might pass on infections for example, could be addressed by making sure animals do not wander from room to room or patient to patient, but are instead booked for a specific patient at a specific time. Owners would also have to ensure the animal's vaccinations were up-to-date. And handlers could clean paws with hospital-grade wipes.

No Surprise Spanish parliamentarians voted overwhelmingly last week to reject the request of the Catalan regional government for permission to hold an independence vote on Sunday October 1st. Over two-thirds of Congress members in Madrid voted down the request and the plea from the Barcelona-based administration for national politicians to "respect the referendum vote". The Catalunya government will next week publish more details of how it plans to progress with the plebiscite, with judges in

An Alicante Province farmer took things to the extreme when he got fed up with his neighbour's cats coming onto his land. A court heard that the unnamed farmer from Polop dressed up in military gear and armed himself Rambolike with a machete and a gun to take action against the intruders. He then took a shot at a cat and killed it on his property in May 2014. He was handed down a three month jail sentence, after he told the court that he never intended to kill the cat, but just to frighten it. Madrid already ruling the

Guardia Civil officers found that the feline had been fatally hit in the chest, and evidence was produced at the man's trial that he was an expert shoot-

er who owned an array of guns. The defendant was also ordered to pay costs, but he did not have to pay any compensation to the cat's owner.

Hot And Distressed A 37-year-old woman was arrested in Almeria city after her leaving her two-year-old daughter in a car for at least an hour last Friday. With high temperatures, the child became distressed, with passers-by reporting the problem to the local police, who broke into the vehicle. She was severely dehydrated with her mother claiming that the car had only been parked up for five minutes, though the car park ticket told a different story. She was charged with child abandonment, with the toddler taken to hospital for treatment.

Benidorm Gripe

A British mother and son who went on holiday to Benidorm have told UK tabloid newspapers that their break was spoiled when the production team on the ITV show Benidorm allegedly banned them from talking while staying at the

hotel where the programme is shot. Lee and Susan Carter, pictured above, claimed they were unable to use half of the swimming pool during their one thousand pound all-inclusive holiday at the Sol Pelicanos Ocas,

because it was sealed off during the programme's location shoot. Office worker Lee, 19, said guests were banned from taking photographs near the poolside set, whilst Benidorm show staff told them off for talking.

The Carters claimed they had no idea that the tenth series of the show was being filmed at the hotel before they booked their first holiday in years. Lee, from Stockport, Greater Manchester, told The Sun newspaper:-

"This has ruined our holiday. After three years of waiting for one it's so unfair that we could not use the full facilities." But according to The Sun, show producers insisted the crew were courteous and requests for silence were

"standard on any set while cameras are turning", while the tape at the pool was needed for health and safety. Also the hotel bar website states the pool bar is only available from July onwards due to filming

Stop The Hawkers

Guilty Brits Two British men have pled guilty at an Alicante court to stabbing two people at a Costa Blanca bar in February 2011, after a latenight argument turned violent. A man, identified as JAF, was given a 31-month jail sentence for attempted murder at the establishment in Alfàs del Pi after he tried to knife a customer in the neck. A second assailant, MF, was given 16 months for causing injury by stabbing another customer in the hand. Both British nationals,

An Orihuela Costa residents group has called for a meeting with Orihuela mayor Emilio Bascuñana over illegal street hawkers operating in the evening at Aquamarina in Cabo Roig. The Cabo Roig Clean Up Committee (CCC) has written to Bascuñana to demand more local police patrols to stop the selling of often fake products which they say is unfairly undercutting legal businesses in the area, as well as the hawkers pestering people at dining tables. The CCC President John Critcher says that the problem is especially bad at night as the hawkers almost block off pavements on much of Calle Cielo, and are a nui-

sance to tourists, as they are disturbed at restaurant tables when they just want to enjoy a leisurely meal. Critcher says he wants the police presence to be extended into evening between 9.00 pm and midnight to help deal with the problem, and says that requests to meet representatives of Orihuela council to discuss the issue has far fallen on deaf ears. The Federation of Associations of Orihuela Costa (FAOC) and its president, Tomás Moreno, is supporting the stand being taken by the CCC. “We have constantly asked Orihuela council to stop these illegal sales which is unfair to local businesses who religiously

pay their taxes, yet the police have not done anything to stop it. They should take a leaf out of Torrevieja’s book on what they’ve done to stop the problem“. “Orihuela council still has not replied to a request that FAOC made last September for additional resources to fund extra police officers operating on foot in the Aquamarina area during the peak summer season”, added Moreno." FAOC has also criticised the lack of action taken against unlicensed Asian masseurs operating on Orihuela Costa beaches targetting tourists, with hygiene issues that cause unsuspecting clients infection or injury.

who fled the scene at the time, had their sentences reduced because of the length of time it took the time

for the case to come to court, along with having agreed previously to pay compensation to the victims.

Left Alliance

The leaders of Spain’s main left of centre political parties have agreed to work together in a deal which could ultimately see the current Partido Popular minority government under Mariano Rajoy finally ousted from power. After a history of bitter exchanges, the PSOE socialist leader Pedro Sanchez and the leader of Podemos, Pablo Iglesias, discussed possible joint initiatives in areas ranging from youth unemployment to the defence of Spain's pension system. The two parties will form joint committees on these

and other topics, Iglesias told reporters after the meeting. The PSOE and Podemos are now aiming to form a left-wing block in Congress against the PP government, with Sanchez saying: - “My priority is that Mariano Rajoy

is no longer the head of the government”. But he ruled out seeking a vote of no-confidence against the government in the short term, after the failure earlier in the month of a Podemos motion which the PSOE did not support.

lamb’s lettuce

For the fish cakes 500g/1lb 2oz skinned and pin-boned halibut fillet, chopped 1 tbsp Thai fish sauce 1 dessertspoon Thai red curry paste 1 kaffir lime leaf, finely sliced 1 thumb-sized piece galangal, chopped finely 1 stick lemongrass (the soft bit only), finely sliced 1 coriander root and leaves, chopped 1 free-range egg 1 tsp grated palm sugar 50g/1¾oz snake beans, sliced thinly (alternatively use French beans) ½ lime, juice only plain flour, for dusting 3 tbsp groundnut oil, for shallow frying For the dip 2 tbsp rice wine vinegar 2 tbsp clear honey ½ lime, juice only 1 tbsp Thai fish sauce 100g/3½oz cucumber, skinned, cored and diced 50g/1¾oz carrot, finely diced 1 shallot, finely diced 2 birds’-eye chillies, seeds removed (if liked), sliced thinly To serve banana leaves

Method For the fish cakes, place the fish, fish sauce, red curry paste, lime leaf, galangal, lemongrass, coriander root, egg, palm sugar, beans, and lime juice in a food processor and blend to a paste. Alternatively this can be done in a pestle and mortar – pound the ingredients to a jelly-like paste. Remove and, with damp hands, take a piece about the size of a walnut. Roll it into a ball and then flatten it to a thin disc. Lay on a floured plate. Repeat until all the mixture has been used. Refrigerate until ready to cook. For the dip, beat together the vinegar, honey, two tablespoons of water, the lime juice and fish sauce. Taste and adjust the honey and lime juice to get it sweeter or sourer, however you want it. Add the cucumber, carrot, shallot and chilli. Leave for 30 minutes to an hour for the flavours to develop. Heat the groundnut oil in a frying pan and cook the fish cakes until golden-brown all over – this should take a couple of minutes on either side. Serve on a banana leaf with the sauce in a dish to one side. Garnish with the lamb’s lettuce.

English settlers were unable to make their beloved suet pudding due to lack of ingredients and cooking equipment, so instead covered stewed fruit with a layer of uncooked plain biscuits, creating a ‘cobbled’ effect. Finely grate in the orange zest and brown sugar, tossing gently to combine, then pour in the Pimm’s. Cut the butter into cubes, add to the food processor and pulse until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Add about 2 tablespoons of water and pulse again until it comes together into a firm dough. Remove the strawberries from the oven, gently mixing and scraping around the edges to collect any bits that are catching, then use a tablespoon to dollop 12 big spoonfuls of dough on top of the fruit. EU moves to restrict hormone-disrupting chemical found in plastics A chemical found in CDs, DVDs, kettles and water bottles could soon be restricted after the EU authorities ruled that it posed a threat to human health because of its effects on hormones. The European chemicals agency (Echa) voted unanimously that bisphenol A (BPA) was an ‘endocrine disruptor’, linking it to a range of hormone-twisting health effects including cancer, learning difficulties and diabetes. The substance has already been singled out for its toxicity to the human reproduction system. The Green law group ClientEarth, which contributed to a 20-year battle against BPA, said the decision was “historic” and called for rapid action by the authorities. “Now BPA is finally recognised as an endocrine disruptor, the EU and national governments must act fast to limit the irreversible damage this chemical does to people and the environment,” said ClientEarth’s lawyer Alice Bernard. BPA is one of the world’s best-selling chemicals, with

3.8m tonnes of the substance produced in 2006, around a third of which was sold in Europe. Originally developed as a synthetic mimic of the female sex hormone oestrogen, it was marketed as an industrial chemical and, in 1957, kickstarted the plastics revolution when it was polymerised with phosgene

to produce what is today known as polycarbonate. More than 90% of the world’s population are thought to have BPA in their urine according to epidemiological studies with one report by the German Federal Environment Agency finding traces in the urine of 591 out of 599 children tested.

But unease among health professionals grew as a growing body of studies linked the chemical to an increased risk of cancer, cell tumours, miscarriages and birth defects. Natacha Cingotti, a spokeswoman for the Health and Environment Alliance, said that the Echa vote was “long overdue and of crucial

importance so that measures to reduce people’s exposure to the substance can be introduced in the future.” “Endocrine disrupting chemicals that are omnipresent, such as bisphenol A, are one of the defining human health challenges of our times,” she added. NGOs fear that industry

groups are likely to challenge the Echa judgement, with the Plastics Europe trade association already opposing Echa’s earlier finding that BPA is toxic to human reproduction. Jasmin Bird, a spokeswoman for Plastics Europe told the Guardian: “We are highly concerned about this development. We believe that it weakens the strong principle of science-based regulatory decisions in the EU, and will result in further uncertainty without providing benefit to the safety of consumers.” New rules to regulate Europe's hormone-disrupting chemicals Bird cited a previous assessment by the European food safety authority which that BPA was not an endocrine disruptor. Even so, Echa is now expected to recommend constraints on BPA’s use under the EU’s Reach regulation, possibly as soon as next year. “We can’t predict when it will happen,” an Echa spokesman said. “Most probably it will happen, but not very quickly.”

May cause drowsiness: How to make sense of drug instructions Do you read the medicine information leaflet before you take medication? Most of us don’t, probably because the list of side-effects of even the humble paracetamol is scary as hell and the yards of print make you lose the will to live. But given that about 1 in 20 prescriptions contains an error, ranging from the harmless to the dangerous, we should really read the leaflet before popping the pill. And a major new report by the Academy of Medical Sciences that includes a recommendation to improve the information leaflets is very welcome. In the meantime, here’s a guide to speed-reading the current pamphlets. What is drug X and what is it used for? You should already know this. But prescribers can get your name wrong, mix up drugs and give you a drug for constipation when you said you had diarrhoea. Pharmacists are great at picking up errors, but it’s your health on the line, so check. What you need to know before you take drug X Read this, especially the first subsection, “Do not take drug X if ...” It includes warnings about allergic reactions, other conditions such as diabetes or epilepsy that may worsen if you take the drug, and potentially dangerous interactions with other medication. “Warnings and precautions” are less likely to flag up serious problems but are still worth a read.

Lots of drugs are labelled as not being suitable for kids and pregnant or breastfeeding women – often because they haven’t been tested in those groups rather than because they are known to be dangerous. Ask the pharmacist or visit the British National Formulary website for detailed, accurate information. Read the bit about “driving and using machines” because to ignore it is dangerous and potentially illegal. There’s one more little bit about “drug X with food and drink”; some drugs need to be taken with or after food to avoid stomach ulcers; others need to be taken on an empty stomach to make sure they are fully absorbed. How to take drug X This tells you when and how often, but this information is written on the packet so you can skip this section. If you take more drug X than you should ... You don’t need to read this unless you do. Possible side-effects This is the section that deters many people from taking the drug. I wouldn’t read it at all unless I developed unexplained, new, worrying symptoms after starting the drug. If it seemed clear to me that the symptom only began after starting the drug, with no other likely explanation, I would assume it’s a side-effect, whether it appears on the list or not. How to store drug X

Most drugs should be in a cupboard, out of reach of kids and pets. Not in the fridge, or oven or wet place. Give surplus stuff back to a pharmacist. What drug X contains The chemical composition; for chemists, geeks and the bored.

Are Potatoes Fattening?

Studies show that Potatoes on their own do not cause weight gain unless they are consumed as fat fried potatoes or mash with a lot of oil and mayonnaise. Boiled Potatoes are three times more satisfying than fried potatoes.

The carbs in Potatoes digest very quickly just like bread, but unlike bread, potatoes contain a different carb called resistant starch which is digested very slowly in the body. Studies show that foods rich in resistant starch help maintain normal blood sugar levels. Bananas, oatmeal, beans, lentils and then potatoes are the top 5 common foods that have high amounts of Resistant Starch. Potatoes do not contain any fat or cholesterol but contain over 70% water which makes them very filling. Potatoes are a rich

Potatoes even contain more potassium than bananas.

The capacity of potatoes alone to sustain life is demonstrated by the documented account of 2 Polish scientists in 1925 who for 167 days ate nothing but potatoes mashed with butter, salt and oil, and at the end they reported no weight gain, no health problems and no craving for change in their diet. 'Contaminated air' on planes linked to health problems "Toxic fumes in aircraft cabins could cause serious health problems, scientists warn," reports suggest. This is based on a UK study investigating air contamination on aircraft and its possi-

ble effects on the health of pilots and cabin crew. The researchers say the air supply on planes can become contaminated by leaks of oil or other chemicals from the engines and

they wanted to find out if this was associated with any health problems. The study, published in the World Health Organization journal, found there is a link between expo-

sure to contaminated air and short-term problems such as drowsiness, loss of consciousness, headache and tremors, and longer-term issues such as problems with memory or concentration and fatigue. This is mainly worrying for pilots and staff on aircrafts,

but could also be a concern for passengers if exposure to highly contaminated air causes a pilot to feel drowsy or pass out. However, only a few case studies of serious air contamination were investigated in this study, suggesting these events are rare.

The study didn't look in detail at whether exposure to contaminated air on planes was harmful to passengers, so it's not possible to draw firm conclusions about whether there's a health risk for people who fly regularly or only occasionally.

10 things you should never do at the airport Airports can be stressful, alright. While there's a lot of advice out there for what you should do at an airport, forget there are lots of things that you should never, ever do - from gate lurking to chatting up staff.

4. Lose your temper The airport experience offers many opportunities to lose your rag in style, but even though it’s socially acceptable to drink six pints of lager before midday in an airport, the rules of social decency are not entirely suspended. Thus, nothing gives you the right to give any member of airport staff a hard time just because your flight is delayed, they’ve run out of almond croissants at Costas or the 12€ offer on a litre of Bombay Sapphire is only open to travellers outside the EU. It’s not their fault, so don’t take it out on them.

1. Get drunk "I’m just getting in the holiday spirit!" Tempting as it is to start your fortnight in Fuengirola as you mean to go on, it is wise to exercise restraint in the alcohol department until arrival at your destination. As well as the need to keep a clear head to deal with last-minute gate changes and the possible operation of emergency exit doors, it is inevitable that you’ll be needing the loo and won’t be able to go until you’ve reached cruising altitude .2. Sleep You’re tired: you got up at 3.30am in Christchurch. It’s now 4pm in Abu Dhabi. Your head says "must… stay… awake", but your body is saying "float me down the lazy river, I’m off to curl up with a large chamomile tea". But whatever you do, don’t give in. One minute you’ll be thinking about catching 40 winks, the next, you’ve missed your flight.

5. Chat up the check-in staff You don’t normally make queasily lecherous comments to your colleagues at 7am (or maybe you do?) so don’t think that just because Sonja on the check-in desk smiles at you, it is an invitation to sleaze over her. All Sonja wants is to get through another day without bashing someone like you in the face with her court shoes, and share her woes with her man over lasagne and a bottle of Rioja. Leching certainly won't get you an upgrade. 6. Jump the queue

3. Be a ‘gate lurker’ You know the type. Resist the almost irrepressible urge to hang around the gate waiting for your flight to be called, like it’s some twisted game of musical chairs. ‘Flight 243 to Barcelona is now boa…’ and the queue already stretches all the way to Wetherspoon’s. A tough one this, even in our brave new world of ‘allocated seating’ - you’ve still got to get on that plane as soon as possible to get your bag in the overhead lockers.

The epic journey through the airport is fraught with possible stress, especially if you haven’t given yourself enough time to allow for delays caused by the failure of the airport’s computer systems or an unscheduled toilet trip. But lose your manners and you lose a little bit of respect for yourself. Remain courteous, don’t sigh audibly when the person in front of you fails to understand the necessary technique for scanning their boarding pass, and don’t push in front of the 80-something couple in the security queue. Karma will find you. 7. Try to be funny The airport is not an appropriate arena for humour. When the check-in person asks if anyone else has packed your bag, resist all temptation to respond: "As a matter of fact, yes, now you mention it, this shady-looking man approached me..." While it may put a smile on their face, it may also backfire as you are wrestled to the ground by security staff and your bag blown up in a controlled explosion. 8. Play videos really loudly on your phone This especially applies when your fellow gate waiters are already really annoyed because your flight is delayed. There are already enough annoying things at airports - and annoying passengers - so don't become one of them. Young kids are exempted from this, because they’re kids, and that’s what they do these days rather than climb trees and fish for tadpoles, and because if they didn’t occupy themselves watching Peppa Pig V: Faster and Furiouser, their poor parents would have to entertain them playing Airport I-Spy rather than occupy themselves reading ’10 Celeb Bikini Body Diets THAT REALLY WORK’ / ’10 Ways To Get Massive Arms In Just Six Weeks’ .9. Believe the sudden change in status on the departure board from Delayed to BOARDING! Do not down the pint of lager you’ve only just ordered, don’t go to the loo, sprint 15 minutes to the gate, and then be stuck in a sheep pen for another hour because your flight isn’t really boarding. They just do it for a laugh. 10. Take this list too seriously While they are very much worth taking on board, these points are not hard, fast and watertight. Apart from number four. Losing your temper at people who are just doing their jobs is unacceptable. And of course, it is possible that a friendly flirtation with a member of the check-in staff will lead to a whirlwind romance, or perhaps even marriage. Or an arrest.

TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

The fabulous Hugh Lawrie is back in Chance, along his famous American accent as he takes up the role of a doctor again, this time as a forensic neuropsychiatrist who has a few skeletons in his cupboard. Airing on the Universal Channel UK and the Hulu streaming service, Lawrie’s character is very different from that of House which made him an international star. Hey, it even got him advertising shaving products for the Spanish and Latin American markets! As opposed to House, we have Dr. Eldon Chance, who is much more vulnerable and has more of a human side to him. Based in San Francisco, Chance is semi-willingly pulled into his patient Jaclyn Blackstone's dangerous life of police corruption, manipulation, and abuse. While dealing with a divorce of his own, and secrets he has been trying to hold back for years, he has to save Jaclyn, as well as himself, from her abusive partner, who just happens to a be a very nasty copper. Lawrie makes this very

Hugh’s Super Chance

watchable fare producing a sympathetic lead character. Once you get past a slowish first episode, you get drawn in by a mixture of drama, some humour, mixed in with some surprise developments. There’s a great subplot involving an auction dealer (played by Clarke Peters) that Chance has dealings with, along with an ex-army guy that works with

him that is as tough as nails, and deal with a group of thugs on his own. All Lawrie fans will enjoy this as an intelligent piece of television featuring a great performer that could even make reading out loud a phone book sound interesting. I love Tracey Ullman and her impressions, though her sketch shows for BBC 1 were too variable in terms of

quality and getting consistent laughs. Last Friday’s one-off pilot for a possible topical political sketch show, Tracey Breaks The News, was promising, though I was not convinced by her take on Theresa May, though I doubt whether she will need to worry about perfecting that character for long! Again the issues were with the script which was just not

funny enough over the 30 minutes. That’s a shame because Ullmann is a rare talent and needs to be served better, or perhaps this just another indicator of the malaise of British TV comedy and satire which just doesn’t appear to have the quality of writers who have something witty and biting to say. This ought to be a golden era for satirists

who are not making the most of what is being served up on a plate for them with so many stories to go at. Is it just me, or are you getting really irritated by the constant stream of back announcements on virtually every British TV drama and documentary that goes along the line of “….and if you have been affected by the issues raised in this programme”, or “…if you have been moved by Grizelda’s story of descending into a horrific spiral of deprivation ”. It pops up every time and I’m bored with it . I’m surprised that at the end of Mrs. Brown’s Boys you don’t hear the words, “…and if you have been affected by the way that Grandad has been treated by Mrs. Brown”. The one type of show that hasn’t got this babble afterwards, and it really needs it, is the news. That needs the contact details for every advice and help-line going to deal with the constant lies that we are fed from every politician of every shade of opinion from around the world!

However, she soon realises that she needs to destroy the footage to be on the safe side.

BBC One commissions My Grandad Was Innocent Chalkboard TV has been commissioned by the BBC to make historical-crime series My Grandad Was Innocent, which will broadcast on BBC One in early 2018. The innovative 10 x 60’ format sees two top criminal barristers Sasha Wass and Jeremy Dein investigate historical murders where the convicted went to the gallows pleading their innocence. They join forces with a living member of the convicted criminal’s family to reexamine the crime and evidence, employing modern forensic techniques to ask whether the original conviction was safe. Between 1900 and 1964, 845 men and 18 women were hanged in the British Isles and a further 5,960 people found guilty of murder and given life sentences. Of these cases, 2,738 were referred to the Court of Appeal. Going back over original police files and trial documentation, the barrister-presenters of My Grandad Was Innocent identify crimes that bear the hallmarks of miscarriages of justice. The pair examine every detail of the case, piecing together the evidence to cre-

ate a complete picture of the crime and a profile of personalities involved. They then draw on the knowledge of medical and forensic experts, the police, local history experts and crime writers to interpret their findings and prepare a final submission for the courts. Dan McGolpin, Controller BBC Programming says: “This series is based on an ambitious and powerful idea. Ten families who believe that their relative may have been falsely convicted of murder and hanged will get the opportunity to clear their name." Lindsay Bradbury, BBC Commissioning Editor Daytime and Early Peak, says: “It’s not often that an idea like this one comes along. It’s got a real sense of public service, stacks of emotion and a huge pull through to the end.”

Michael Portillo embarks on a new adventure in India BBC Two has commissioned Great Indian Railway Journeys, a brand new series from Boundless. This follows the success of Great British Railway Journeys, Great Continental Railway Journeys and Great American Railroad Journeys, all presented by Michael Portillo. With a century-old Bradshaw’s Handbook Of Indian, Foreign And Colonial Travel tucked under his arm, Michael will embark on a brand new railway adventure through a land of majestic mountains, scorching desert and plains watered by holy rivers. Published at the height of the British Raj in 1913, Michael’s guidebook will steer him towards ornate palaces and golden temples. He will meet Maharajas and Mughals and ride some of the world’s most exhilarating trains. Along the way, Michael will discover how imperial railways designed by British engineers inadvertently spread ideas of independence among hundreds of millions of Indians, who today live in the world’s largest democracy. Michael Portillo comments:

"British-built railways in India helped the British to make money and maintain order; and as a by-product served to unite the country, ripe for independence. Exploring the subcontinent by rail today exposed me to its extraordinary vivacity, colour and noise; and introduced me to the new hightech India too." Taking in the extraordinary variety of the Indian landscape, journeys in the series include Amritsar to Shimla, Lucknow to Kolkata, Mysuru to Chennai and Jodhpur to Delhi through India’s famous ‘Golden Triangle’. John Comerford, Head of Boundless West and Executive Producer, says: “We are particularly excited for Michael to be taking to the tracks in Asia for the first time. Airing this Autumn.

Q

Hi. Hoping you can help me I have a Toshiba Laptop with Bluetooth I cannot get it to recognise my phone or if it does my phone doesn't recognise the computer I have tried with Dongle that says it works with Vista plus another one that includes a Disc, but I just cannot get Photos from my Phones to the Computer. Hoping you can help. Thanks in anticipation. Regards Ray

A

Hi Ray, it “sounds” like you are missing the software that is specific to your phone? I.e. Nokia PC Suite for a Nokia phone? Have you “paired” your phone and your “bluetoothed” PC already? If you have then do a search on your phones manufacturers website for your phone’s computer software and you should be home and dry.

Q

Hi Richard, I read your article regards changing the display language on a brother printer bought in Germany. I have a Brother printer model MFC-240C bought in Germany can you change the display language if so how? Thanks

A

Hi David, I have had a good look through the user manual for your machine and I am afraid there doesn’t seem to be an option to change the language. You can of course install the English language software available free from brother.co.uk so that all the functions on your PC are in English.

Romero’s Return Argentinian Andres Romero celebrated a "lifechanging" victory at the BMW International Open after his outstanding final round earned him his first title for nine years in Munich on Sunday, yet he was lucky to be there in the first place. Romero was hugely grateful to be granted a sponsor's invite to the event having lost his card on both the PGA Tour and European Tour, and he began the tournament a lowly 837th in the world rankings. But the Argentine has now accepted European Tour membership after claiming his second win in Germany almost 10 years after his first. Romero birdied seven of the last 11 holes in Munich to complete a flawless 65 and clinch a thrilling one-shot win over Sergio Garcia, Richard Bland and Thomas Detry, and the 36-year-old can now look forward to a more secure future. "I'm really happy, after ten years without winning on the European Tour, and especially here in Germany," said Romero, who had not posted a top-10 finish on Tour since the BMW PGA Championship nine years ago. Sergio Garcia came within inches of chipping in for eagle at the 72nd hole as he was denied his third win of the year, but the Masters champion was full of praise for Romero. "It was a good week and I obviously fell just short, but I felt like I played well enough to win for sure," said the Spaniard. "Obviously there were a couple of missed putts here and there and some really good putts that didn't want to go in, so it was difficult to get anything going. And that chip on 18 looked pretty good but it just missed on the right side. "You have to give credit to Andres. With no status, he's neither here on the European Tour or the PGA Tour, so to go out and shoot 65 today, I'm happy for him and we'll just keep trying.”

Keep Them Clean

There are several ways that you can clean your prized golf clubs, from making the most of vending machine style devices found at modern driving ranges, through to a good old fashioned bucket of soapy water on your patio, writes JOHN FARMER. Here are some time old tips that seem to have done the trick for me over the years, so happy cleaning! What do you need to clean your golf clubs? To clean your golf clubs I recommend you start with a simple plastic bucket, but a bathroom or kitchen sink will do the job just as well. You’ll also need lukewarm water, a splash of washing up liquid, an old towel, and an old toothbrush, nylon brush or brush with plastic bristles. Step 1 Squirt a little washing up liquid into your bucket or sink and fill it with enough lukewarm water to cover the heads of your irons without the water coming up over the ferrules if possible. Be careful you don’t run the water too hot, as you could risk loosening the ferrules, which join the shafts to the heads. Step 2 Set the bucket down (ideally outside if possible) and place your irons and wedges in

with the clubheads submerged and allow them to soak in the warm water for a few minutes to loosen any dirt in the grooves. For the time being leave your woods and putter out of the water. Step 3 After a few minutes soaking time, take each club in turn and use an old toothbrush, nylon brush or sharp tee peg to clean out their individual grooves. This is the most important step in cleaning your clubs, as removing dirt and debris from the grooves will help increase surface area contact with your golf ball at impact, which is how the grooves impart spin to give you added control. Step 4 Once the grooves are clean, run the brush across the sole of the iron and over the back of the clubhead, removing any mud, sand and grass. Step 5 Once all the mud has gone, use a hose or tap to rinse off the clubhead, checking the removal of any suds hasn’t revealed any remaining dirt. Next use your old towel to dry off the clubhead and give the shaft a quick wipe down to ensure it doesn’t go back into your bag wet.

Italians In Charge

Nine-time world champion Valentino Rossi claimed victory for Yamaha last Sunday at Assen as Andrea Dovizioso took the lead in the MotoGP title race. It was the Italian's first win since May 2016 but Ducati's Dovizioso, winner of the previous two races, was fifth to open up a fourpoint overall lead, whilst it was a never race to forget for the previous leader, Spain’s Maverick Vinales. He began 11th on the grid, and crashed his Yamaha with 14 laps remaining. Italy’s Danilo Petrucci came second whilst Spaniard Marc Marquez finished third. Britain's Cal Crutchlow was fourth for Honda, whilst Rookie Johann

Zarco, in pole position for the first time, finished 14th on his Yamaha. Rossi's 10th win at Assen - eight of which have been in MotoGP - lifted him to third in the standings, only seven points behind Dovizioso. The 38-year-old's 115th grand prix win - and his 89th in the top class - put him in contention for a first world title since 2009. He passed Zarco to take the lead with 15 laps left and was unscathed when the Frenchman, winner of the Moto2 Championship for the past two years, clipped his rear wheel with an immediate attempt to regain the lead. "This place is always special. The track is fantastic. I'm so happy for me

and my team," said Rossi. In Moto3, 17-year-old Aron Canet followed up his breakthrough victory in Spain last month with another triumph, hitting the front on the last lap to beat Italy Romano Fenati and Briton John McPhee. Canet is second in the series with 110 points, only 30 behind leader and fellow Spaniard Joan Mir, with McPhee fifth on 83. Franco Morbidelli of Italy edged out Thomas Lueth to win in Moto2 - his fifth victory in eight races - and he leads the Swiss rider by 12 points at the top of the overall standings. Alex Marquez, younger brother of MotoGP champion Marc, is currently some 35 points adrift in third place.

Ant On Top

Murcia-based British rider Anthony Ford-Dunn (pictured above in secondplace) had a great weekend this month in the S4 road class of the European Supermoto Championships, with an excellent display of hard racing to come away with the overall win at the Albaida circuit in Valenica. That put him into fourth place in the Championship, with more action to come this weekend in Italy. Anthony qualified in second position on the grid for the first of his two races, and whilst qualifying on the front

row of the grid was a great advantage, Anthony had a disastrous start to the first race and after much jostling he emerged ninth from the first corner. Then the pressure was on and Anthony had to put some hard moves in to overtake other competitors as quickly as possible. The racing was tough with a few overtakes even involving running onto the grass but Anthony came through the pack to finish in third position at the flag. The second race start was better with Anthony in fourth

place and then fighting to second position but unable to catch the leader. However after the second race, the leader’s bike was found to breach technical rules and he was penalised two places which gave Anthony the race victory and the overall win from the two races. It meant that for the first time ever, a British rider stood upon the top step of the S4 Supermoto championship rostrum, and Anthony is now looking forward to the next round this weekend at Busca in Italy.

Mini Champions

A Torrevieja team has been crowned as Spanish Mini-Football champions after winning the national tournament at Oviedo on Sunday. Electricidad Perseo, who play on Torrevieja Sports

Centre’s Gabriel Samper field, beat off all-comers in an event that featured 32 teams involving over 500 players, and saw off BCP Malaga three-one in the final. The Perseo team coached by Enrique

Sánchez now carry the flag for the Spain in a Champions League-style format contest this September in Slovenia, which could then see them qualify for the world finals in Tunisia.

Almoradi Boss

CD Almoradi’s new coach is to be the former CD Cox coach, Juanan Cases, who last year looked after the Cox youth team. Picked by Almoradi President Francisco Albaladejo to lead the side back into the National League third division, Cases (pictured above with Albaledejo) said that the new Preferente season will be tough with sides like CD Torrevieja and CD Thader set to offer stiff competition, in addition to the likes of Muro, Benidorm, Villajoyosa, and Jove Espanol. “I want to put together a squad with a mixture of players who were here last season, along with people who have Preferente experience”, said Cases. His first two signings were unveiled as midfielders (pictured below), with the ex-Almoradi player Benja rejoining the club from Albatera, with another Albatera player Ángel also putting pen to paper. Both men played for Cases when he was in charge of Cox.

Thader’s Squad

After making it to the Preferente play-off’s in a successful season, the Rojales-based CD Thader side has been busy sorting out of the squad for next season, with one of the first players to be resigned being defender Lloyd Dummett (pictured top), who has been involved in the Thader set-up from his youth days. Not surprisingly a string of players have so far been resigned for the new campaign including Adri, Villa, Rafa, Quino, Ruben Sanz, Miguel, Chema, and Juan, as well as one of last season’s top scorers, Valentin. Leading the new signings for Thader is striker Mario Lozano "May", who has spent the last few seasons at Albatera, many of which saw him ending up as the team’s top scorer. 22-year-old goalkeeper Millán Domingo joins the club with experience of the Hercules youth team in Alicante, as well as third division experience with Jove Espanol and Muro. Ex-Thader player Nino returns from Callosa Deportiva, whilst defender José Vicente Córdoba Cámara "Piti" (pictured below), joins from Redovan.

Work Ethic

Elche’s new goalkeepr José Juan has said that only hard work will get the Ilicitanos out of the the Segunda division B next season. The ex-Lugo keeper who spent five years at the club said that he comes to Elche knowing how tough it will be next season. “Lugo got promoted from division B down to eleven committed players who took to the field every week. We have to work hard and be solid defensively and have a quality squad”, said José Juan at his official presentation at the club with sporting director Jorge Cordero. The list of departures continues with Guillermo signing a three-year-deal with Numancia, whilst midfielder Jony Ñíguez is joining Mallorca. Albert Dorca has turned down the offer put to him by the Ilicitanos and will be an Alcorcón player for the next two season, with the side just avoiding relegation to Segunda B back in May. Real-Madrid Castilla are said to be showing interest in Liberto Beltrán (pictured below), with the striker currently under contract to Elche for another three years. Meanwhile at the time of going to press, Jorge Cordero was waiting to hear from Nino and Sergio Pelegrín over offers that were made to them a fortnight ago.

Torry Return

CD Torrevieja say they are planning to return to the Vicente Garcia stadium for the new season in September, after the council shut down the facility after major safety concerns over the main grandstand and the changing rooms. The club, who were relegated to the Preferente in May, played nearly all of last season at the adjoining Nelson Mandela stadium, but the Torrevieja President Vicente Boix has launched a project to build new changing rooms for the teams, as well as for the match officials. No details have been given about the grandstand, which presumably will remain closed. Torrevieja council stated in February 2016 that they planned to “put forward a major redevelopment project for the stadium”, adding “that it deserves to be maintained as a symbol of local sport”, based on getting external funding and grants. 18 months on, nothing has come to fruition.

Favourite Stays

Ilicitanos Retreat

CD Montesinos’s preparations for the new challenge of being in Primera Regional Group Eight this autumn have been given a boost by the news that their popular striker Vaz (pictured with supporters last season) has verbally agreed to stay with the club. Carlos Ventura has also given a verbal undertaking to President Felipe Paredes Aldeguer to stay with the promoted club, despite overtures being made by Almoradi in the Preferente. The club have verbal agreements, ahead of official registration with the Valencian FA, with half a dozen new players, whilst Aure has asked to be released for personal reasons due to family and work commitments.

Elche have backed down from complaints from fans and local polticians, and switched the date of August’s traditional Festa d´Elx trophy fixture. It had originally been scheduled to be played on the actual night of the firework celebrations on Sunday August 13th, sparking controversy. Club officials posted via social media that they had to decide the change the date of the clash against this year’s opponents Levante “taking account of the wishes of the Ilicitanos supporters”. One of the most vocal critics of the original date was Elche mayor Carlos González and his fellow councillors who slammed the club for arranging the match just hours before one of the most iconic events in the municipality. The fixture will now be played a day earlier on the Saturday evening kicking-off at 8.00 pm.

Getafe Back

Getafe earned an immediate return to the La Liga Primera division top flight after beating Tenerife in the second division promotion play-off final last weekend. The Madrid-based club, whose 11-year stint in La Liga came to an end when they were relegated last year, lost the first leg of their final 1-0 in the Canary Islands, but they turned things round on Saturday with a 3-1 home victory. Alejandro Faurlin's 10th-minute goal wiped out Tenerife's first-leg advantage and Daniel Pacheco's strike three minutes later put Getafe in charge at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez. Anthony Lozano got Tenerife back into it with a closerange goal in the 18th minute but Pacheco's second of the night just before half-time proved decisive for Getafe, whose 3-2 aggregate win sees them join Levante and Girona in going up.

Tweaking Around

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has promised the La Liga giants will make some "tweaks" to their squad during the summer transfer window in order to build a team capable of fighting for the Champions League, La Liga and the Copa del Rey titles next season. However, he refused to speak about certain targets amid the recurrent reports linking them with Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Marco Verratti and Arsenal right-back Hector Bellerin. The Catalans appointed Ernesto Valverde to replace Luis Enrique following a disappointing 2016-2017 season, with Real Madrid winning both the La Liga and the Champions League crowns. However, they are yet to make any major additions to the squad, having only agreed to make Marlon Santos' loan move from Fluminense permanent amid the expected departure of Jeremy Mathieu. Verratti and Bellerin have been earmarked as the two main targets to lead Valverde's revamp while it recently emerged that the Catalans are also trying to sign former Tottenham Hotspur flop Paulinho from Guangzhou Evergrande. The Barcelona president refused to reveal the state of negotiations with PSG over the 24-year-old midfielder, but did confirm that the Catalans are working hard to bolster Valverde's squad. "I can't say too much about certain players. Verratti is a PSG player and has a contract with that club. I just trust in Robert Fernandez's work but without speaking about certain names. They know what we need for next season and are working hard on it," the Barcelona president said to BeIN Sport.

Cooling Down

Cristiano Ronaldo is "angry" but Real Madrid president Florentino Perez says he expects him to stay at the Bernabeu. Ronaldo has been summoned to a hearing at the end of July over accusations of tax fraud, which he has denied, and he was reported to be so outraged over perceived unfair treatment by the Spanish authorities that he was considering leaving the country. The 32-year-old, who is under contract until 2021, has been linked with a return to Manchester United but while Perez has spoken openly about the Portugal star's outrage, he has played down talk of a summer exit. "He has a contract with Real Madrid and, when he stops playing at the Confederations Cup, we will talk," Perez said on esRadio's El Primer Palo. "He's angry, that's for sure, because he is an honest person who fulfils his obligations. "I have not talked to him but we are delighted that he is in Madrid. I think he will continue in Madrid." Asked further about Ronaldo's tax affairs, Perez added: "We all have to fulfil our fiscal obligations. Madrid is not responsible for the players' declarations, but there has never been a concealment. Cristiano does not have to deny anything he has not said." Perez also discussed speculation linking Monaco forward Kylian Mbappe(pictured below) with a move to the Bernabeu but hinted that the 18-year-old may have to wait a little longer to join the Champions League and La Liga winners. "He is a very good player, it reminds me of last year of when they said that we would sign Pogba," the Bernabeu chief said of Mbappe. "The summer is very long, Zidane has had a close relationship with him for several years. "But very few players play at Real Madrid at the age of 18. He should have patience, the coach has it in his mind. It's not worth saying if we are going to bring in players who could be on the bench."

Top Ranking

Britain's defending champion Andy Murray has been named top seed as the 'big four' in men's tennis head the rankings for Wimbledon, with the draw taking place today, ahead of the tournament starting on Monday. Novak Djokovic is second, Roger Federer third and Rafael Nadal fourth seed. It is the first time since Wimbledon 2014 that the four players have been named top seeds for a Grand Slam and keeps them apart until the semi-finals. German Angelique Kerber (pictured below) is the top women's seed with Britain's Johanna Konta sixth. Murray, who won Wimbledon for the second time last year, pulled out of his scheduled warm-up match at the Hurlingham Club on Tuesday with a sore hip but the 30-yearold Scot still plans to play an as-yet-unnamed opponent today. With the men's seedings taking into account recent grass court form, Djokovic and Federer move up two places from their world ranking, with Nadal and fifth seed Stan Wawrinka dropping two. The Queen's Club champion Feliciano Lopez is ranked 25, but will be seeded 19th for Wimbledon. Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas has withdrawn with a knee injury, meaning Spain's Fernando Verdasco is now seeded 31st. Cuevas will be replaced by a lucky loser. Women's seedings reflect the world rankings, with Simona Halep second behind Kerber, while 26-year-old Konta looks to get further than the second round for the first time. Defending champion Serena Williams is absent because she is pregnant. Briton Jamie Murray and his partner Bruno Soares are the third seeds for the men's doubles, which are headed by Henri Kontinen and John Peers.

LAST CHANCE SALOON

Johnny Sexton and Owen Farrell(pictured) will start together for the British and Irish Lions in the second Test against New Zealand in Wellington(9.35 am kick, live on Sky Sports). Sexton comes in at fly-half with Farrell at inside centre, the first time the combination has started in New Zealand. Captain Sam Warburton replaces Peter O'Mahony on the blind-side flank, with Maro Itoje preferred to George Kruis. Wales second-row Alun Wyn Jones keeps his place in the starting XV despite a difficult outing in the first Test with strong midweek performances from Courtney Lawes and Iain Henderson giving Gatland "food for thought". Lawes, CJ Stander and Jack Nowell are among the replacements after playing in the midweek draw with Hurricanes on Tuesday. Ken Owens, Jack McGrath, Kyle Sinckler, Rhys Webb and Ben Te'o also make the

bench. The Lions lost last Saturday’s opener 30-15 in Auckland, with Lions head coach Warren Gatland citing a lack of physicality in the forwards, which he has sought to address with the inclusion of Saracens lock Itoje and Warburton. "You have to make the tough calls," Gatland said. "We saw Maro's impact in the first Test and he will bring an edge and a physicality, as will Sam Warburton in terms of pressure on the ball." But while those changes were expected, Gatland has been reluctant to field Sexton and Farrell in the same midfield in the tour matches. "Both have played well and it gives us that attacking option in the 10-12 channel," Gatland continued. "We created opportunities in the first Test and there were a few that we didn't finish."

FROOME’S FRENCH QUEST The 2017 Tour de France starts tomorrow outside French borders again, this time with a 14 kilometre time-trial in Dusseldorf, Germany, with Britain’s Chris Froome going for a fourth win, writes EDDIE WHITE. It will be an interesting test for the top contenders, who have got used to plenty of lengthy climbing over the years. This year's race is low on iconic climbs and lengthy ascents, with the organisers hoping the spread of major climbs combined with more open stages designed around attacking cycling will give the riders a new challenge. Speaking at Team Sky’s pre-race press conference, three-time Tour winner Chris Froome said this year’s course could lead to an ‘open race’ and highlighted the

form of his key rivals. Froome said: “This is definitely going to be the biggest challenge of my career to date. The level of my rivals and the course we’re racing on this year means it could be a very open race.” Meanwhile, Murcia’s Alejandro Valverde says he believes his Movistar team-mate Nairo Quintana will come into the race stronger after his Giro d’ Italia campaign, as he prepares to ride in full support of Quintana at the Tour. Quintana finished second in the Giro d’Italia in May behind Tom Dumoulin, falling at the first hurdle in an ambitious Giro-Tour double. “He’s training well, he’s keeping his mind fresh”, said the 37-year-old from Las Lumbreras.
