IT’S HAPPENED AGAIN!

A

n intoxicated 41-yearold Finnish woman was arrested by the Guardia Civil after knocking over a cyclist on the CV-920 in the Guardamar municipality on Sunday morning. It’s the latest collision with a cyclist involving a motorist that was either drunk or on drugs in Alicante Province, with five people having lost their lives since early May. A 30-year-old Moroccan cyclist was struck, with the woman driving away from the scene, before she was discovered by the Guardia Civil in the area in the early evening, and was over the drink-drive limit several hours after the collision. The cyclist was taken to the

T

Vega Baja Hospital with early indications that he may have had suffered a severe brain injury. The motorist appeared before a Torrevieja judge on Monday, who charged her with a series of offences including driving under the

influence of alcohol; driving without a license; and causing injury. In contrast to similar recent incidents, she was granted bail and must report to a court every 15 days in addition to having her passport taken away. The

Informacion newspaper said that the woman told the judge that she couldn’t remember anything, with the paper reporting that before the collision with the cyclist, she had been involved in a “minor” accident.

CARRIAGEWAY CHAOS

he long-running story of trying to upgrade the N-332 highway around Torrevieja into a dual carriageway has taken a fresh twist, with the Valencian Government now saying that the project has nothing to do with them, amidst some unsigned documents dating back a dozen years. The Courier reported last week that Spain’s works ministry claimed that a series of concerns that were stalling the project needed to be addressed by the Valencian administration, and that they had not heard anything back from them on those issues for a number of months. Now Torrevieja mayor

José Manuel Dolón(pictured) has revealed that Valencia’s public works minister Carlos Domingo Soler has said that it is nothing to do with them, despite all their previous statements and actions over the stalled plans, adding that responsibility for the N-332 lay with the national works ministry. He said that there was no deal between Torrevieja council and the national ministry that involved the Valencian government, despite a three-way agreement that was apparently made back in 2005, but had not been signed. Dolón is to seek an urgent meeting with Spain’s works minister Manuel Niño

González to press for the project to continue, and has said that neither the national or regional governments had located the documents

that should have been signed 12 years ago. A copy for signing in Torrevieja never appeared either, according to the mayor.

Benidorm local police officers arrested 53-year-old David Grundy in the early hours of Sunday morning, who was wanted for questioning over the stabbing of a 42-year-old woman at Pinar de Campoamor. Benidorm police were tipped off on Saturday by the Guardia Civil in Pilar de la Horadada that Grundy, originally from Bolton, might be in the resort, after a major search for the stolen Hyundai car that he used to flee the Orihuela Costa. Reports suggested that Grundy was spotted in a Benidorm bar and was recognised by a customer who had seen his photograph posted in the local media. Officers spotted the vehicle parked up on Calle Estocolmo, in the Rincón de

Loix area of the resort, close to the Bermudas apartment block, and discovered Grundy inside it, with over four and a half thousand euros in cash in the car. Police sources said that the fugitive was intending to flee Spain. 42-year-old Nicola Houghton was discovered by her daughter lying in a pool of blood with a kitchen knife plunged into her back at her home on the Lomas de Don Juan urbanisation on Tuesday June 13th, and was successfully operated on at Torrevieja Hospital, and it was announced on Monday that she was out of intensive care. A Valencian official said last week that the couple had lived in the area for some time, and that there was no apparent history of violence.

Plans for several highrise buildings in Punta Prima which would be at least ten storeys high, have been delayed by Torrevieja council due to a site of historical interest in the area. Counvcillor Fanny Serrano said that a Civil War bomb shelter needed to be excavated on the ten thousand square metre site and was an important part

of Torrevieja's heritage. She added that the authority were also looking at the legal status of a beach bar next to the site of some 19th century police barracks (pictured) at Punta Prima cove, as they believe it was operating there without appropriate permission including going against soil erosion laws for the coast.

service aircraft to reach the scene, around 70 miles off the coast, with the jerry-built sailing boat towed back to Cartagena. It was the fourth boat to be spotted and taken to Cartagena in the space of four days, with the five victims set to have probably died due to heatstroke.

120 thousand euro is to be spent repairing roads, pavements, signs, and roundabouts in the Algorfa municipality. Algorfa's mayor Manuel Ros along with the urban councillor Fabián Rico signed an agreement with Alicante Provincial Council after a meeting with their technicians. Work is scheduled to start on the four month project shortly and will include improvements to the Lo Crispin urbanisation entrance sign; the main street at La Finca Golf; and enhancing the pavement surfacing at the Montemar urbanisation.

Drunken Brit

Double Trouble

A 43-year-old British man was stopped from boarding a UK-bound flight from Alicante-Elche airport last week because he was heavily intoxicated. The boozed-up Brit, who was planning to return home from a holiday, then started to hang around a car rental area. where he attracted the interest of some National Police officers(file picture). Things turned from bad to worse for him as tried to hit the agents, who then cuffed him and put him in a cell.

More Park

A British drunk-driver has been arrested for the second time in eight weeks by the San Miguel de Salinas local police after hitting a motorcycle with two riders on it, and leaving them lying injured on the ground. The unnamed man had rammed his vehicle into the back of a Guardia Civil car that was waiting at traffic lights in San Miguel back in

mid-April, and was found to be well over the alcohol limit. The latest incident happened at the Balcón de la Costa Blanca urbanisation on Avenida de Levante, where the driver turned right and hit the bike that was correctly waiting at a Stop sign. The drunken motorist then tried to drive away with the bike caught

in the front bumper of his car, and after a serious of manouevres, he sped off, with the two riders lying on the road. The man was found hiding out at a house on the urbanisation and refused to take a toxicology test, but was found to be over the alcohol limit the following day when he went to pick up his car.

San Pedro del Pinatar's regional park is to see a big rise in its area from 856 hectares to nearly 1,200 hectares, according to the Murcia government's environment ministry. The announcement was spurred on the environmental group ANSE that claimed the government was actually looking to reduce the size of the protected area that is home to a variety of birdlife.

Many Thanks

What A Waste

Santa Pola council will to have to answer two charges from the Guardia Civil over dumping beach waste in four woodland protection areas close to the local

sewage treatment plant, and some 500 metres from the Sierra de Santa Pola. The Guardia's environmental division, Seprona, launched an investigation

resulting in them finding evidence of unauthorised transfer of sand, algae, and other beach debris to the site between last summer and this spring.

San Javier council held a special ceremony on Sunday to recognise the work done by everybody last December in helping to deal with the aftermath of the severe storms that hit the area. Dozens of medals and certifi-

cates were presented by San Javier mayor José Miguel Luengo, who paid tribute to what he called “the silent and anonymous heroism” of local people to get things back to normal after the storms struck.

Tagged Up Recently born Audouin gulls were banded with ID rings last Friday, as 30 volunteers took part for the second-year running in a special day involved in tagging one of the world's rarest species of gull. The session took place on Torrevieja's salt flats with around 200 birds getting the tags in an hour allowing them to be monitored via binoculars, with blood samples also being taken to study the gulls, including any diseases they might get, as well as their dietary habits.

Costly Fall The Torrevieja site has seen some 1,900 nesting pairs of the Audouin over the last 12 months.

Torrevieja council has been ordered to pay 10 and a half thousand euros of compensation to a driver who was

injured after a palm tree fell on top of a car that was travelling on the city's Paseo Vista Alegre in August 2014.

A judge ruled that the council had been negligent in not dealing with the poor condition of the palm tree, and said

that the compensation was for the driver's injuries and also to the damage caused to the vehicle.

Death Riddle

On Patrol Torrevieja’s lifeguard service has started on the municipality’s beaches at La Mata, Los Locos, El Cura and Los Náufragos, and will run until September 15th. A surveillance boat will also cover the area from La Mata to Punta Prima, with the beach cover being provided daily from 11.00 am to 7.00 pm, with staff also being assigned to Cabo Cervera, Cala Piteras, and the area around the Juan Aparicio walkway until August 31st. The service is being provided by the Eulen company who won a three year tender last year, which saw the end of a long association between Torrevieja council and the Cruz Roja.

Quick Cops A 67-year-old Torrevieja woman was found dead at her Los Locos beach area home last Thursday Her brother, who lives in La Nucia, had travelled down to check up on her, after growing concerned as he

had not heared from her for a number of days. She was discovered lying on her bed at her Palacio del Mar apartment on Avenida Ruiz Cánovas (pictured) with rope tied around her neck and other parts of her body.

The Guardia Civil said that she suffered from fibromyalgia, and with her medical condition, it would have been very difficult for the woman to have tied the rope herself, and so an investigation was launched.

Walkway Repair

Three Orihuela local police officers are to get special recognition from the Valencian Government for their actions in January 2016, after the death of British resident Scott Waring at a Villamartin Plaza bar, after his neck was slashed with a broken bottle. The officers are to get awards at a ceremony next month for ther quick intervention, which led to the arrest of three suspects who were trying to get away in a car.

Free Roaming

Orihuela council iis spending 350 thousand euro to boost cleaning and waste collection services over the high season, according to councillor Dámaso Aparicio. Extra waste trucks are to be drafted into action along with more waste containers, coupled with more resources to keep the Orihuela Costa beaches clean.

Work on repairing the damage done to the La Glea beach walkway during the winter storms should be finished within a week, according to Orihuela’s beaches and coastal councillor Luisa Boné. Boné apologised for

the work going on during the “high season”, but said that the 36 thousand euro project had to go through official compliance procedures involving the provincial coastal service, and that caused a delay.

Mobile phone roaming charges have now ended between European Union countries, along with some members of the European

Economic Area taking in Norway, Iceland, and Switzerland. International call rates will still apply on mobile phones,

but without the premium of a roaming charge that has seen the tariff gradually fall in recent years ahead of last week’s abolition.

Broken Promise

The Spanish government might only get 28 percent back of the multibillion-euro aid package doled out to banks to keep them afloat during the recession according to the country's central bank. That statement goes totally against a pledge from Prime Minister Mariano

Rajoy some five years ago that it wouldn't cost "one euro" to the taxpayer. More than a dozen banks got 76.14 billion euro in capital injections and financial guarantees as the Spanish banking sector struggled due to the financial crisis and the bursting of the

property bubble back in 2008. A central bank spokesman said the final amount retrieved by the government would depend on what the state recovers when it sells its stakes in entities it had to step in and help during the crisis, such as Bankia.

Bus Boost

On the back of their recent production of Noel Coward’s Blithe Spirit, the ACTS (Actors Community Theatre Society) group got special recognition from Benijofar mayor Luis Rodriquez Perez for the six thousand euro raised for the town’s social fund. The group was formed two years ago by Tony and Angela Goddard to provide ‘a professional drama company in the area’, with an array of familiar faces that local theatregoing audiences would recognise. The mayor presented ACTS with a plaque in appreciation of their fund-raising, with the group now working on October’s production of the farce, Key for Two, which will be staged at the town’s Casa de Cultura.

Busy Bash

The Torrevieja Alzheimer’s Association, AFA, have picked up a major donation of five thousand euro as they try to raise enough money to buy a new minibus. The donation came from HELP Vega Baja, with President Michele Masson saying: - “As a charity we are asked regularly to visit families who have someone struggling day after day with this awful condition. Being diagnosed or caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s can be extremely difficult, particularly when you are perhaps living far away from the rest of your family.” Puri García and Matilde Sánchez, former AFA president received a cheque from Carole Jones, Treasurer of HELP Vega Baja and Michele Masson at the monthly HELP charity lunch.

Fair Success

Members of SAMM (Sailing Association Mar Menor) let their hair down earlier this month for their annual three day “Spring Bash” at the Costa Narejos hotel, Los Alcázares. 38 SAMM members enjoyed various activities including a picnic on Isla Perdeguera; a mini golf competition at Golf de Luxe; and a Barn Dance as part of a packed three days of fun.

Perfect warm and sunny weather was the backdrop for this month’s Age Concern Costa Blanca South annual Summer Fair staged at the charity’s headquarters in the La Siesta area of Torrevieja. A bumper sum of nearly three thousand euro was raised, as visitors picked up loads of bargains, as well as being entertained by the Terri Horwarth Morris Dancers.

Puncture Pilferers

A trio of North African robbers, who stole from cars mainly belonging to nonSpaniards in the Torrevieja and Crevillente areas, have been arrested by the Guardia Civil. It's emerged that the detainees have been linked to a total of 182 crimes over the years. The 33-year-old Moroccan ring-leader would go to car parks in shopping centres and rest areas around Torrevieja and Crevillente, and puncture a tyre of a car that he and his companions wanted to rob. They would wait patiently for the vehicle owner to return and would offer some help, and whilst the owner was distracted, another member of the crew would steal items from the targetted vehicle.

After numerous reports of such incidents, the Guardia launched an operation in March, and started sifting through hundreds of hours of CCTV footage, as well as sitting in unmarked patrol cards to pounce on the robbers. The Guardia got what they wanted in Torrevieja last month when they spotted the Moroccan and a 38-year-old Algerian trying to pull off a robbery. The two men were arrested, and charged with nine car break-ins around Torrevieja. The duo were bailed after a court appearance, but the Moroccan was keen to continue his activities, and the Guardia in Lawrenceville spotted him on camera footage operating in that area, this time helped by a 45-year-old Algerian man.

Off he went to court again, this time with his new assistant, for 13 car theft charges pertaining to the Crevillente region. The Moroccan man has used ten different identities over the years and was arrested by the Guardia in Altea earlier this year for 22 robberies using the "tyre puncture" method. The thefts in Crevillente and Torrevieja alone saw the gang take 13 thousand euro in cash, as well as 500 UK pounds; nine thousand euro in mobile phones; fifteenhundred euros in glasses; and fifteen-hundred euros in electronic devices. On top of that. the puncture gang caused two thousand euros in expenses for the hood-winked motorists to replace their damaged tyres.

Better Boardwalk

The newly-refurbished boardwalk at La Mata in Torrevieja was visited by the government delegate to Valencia, Juan Carlos Moragues on Tuesday.

650 thousand euro has been spent on restoring 260 metres of the walk that was severely damaged in last winter’s storms, and which has been deteriorating for

the last few years. Moragues also went to the iconic La Mata tower which he said will have 350 thousand euro spent on emergency repairs over the next three months.

Are Better Interest Rates on Their Way at Last?

11

Keith Littlewood, International Financial Adviser at Blacktower, Costa CĂĄlida The UK has had an unprecedented period of low interest rates. In 2009, we saw the base rate drop to 0.5% and then last August down to 0.25%. That is 8 years of extremely low interest rates. Whilst this has been great for borrowers and has helped keep the business economy afloat, it has been disastrous for those people in or approaching retirement. Annuity rates have been terrible for pension income returns, and the bank rates for the people that have savings have been providing very poor returns. Good news may be on the way for savers now, though, as for the first time in nearly 10 years, the monetary policy committee (MPC) had a split decision of 5-3, when the vote was made, to decide on whether to make an interest-rate increase last week. It was believed the MPC would vote 7-1 to maintain the rate at its postBrexit referendum level of 0.25%. Members

In the minutes of the ratesetting meeting, the Bank said it now expected inflation to exceed 3% by the autumn - higher than it had forecast a month ago having reached an annual rate of 2.9% in May. This announcement had an immediate effect on the Pound/Euro rate. The levels

were dropping alarmingly low again to the 1.1% level, but this announcement saw the rate rise immediately back to 1.4%. This is very positive for the Pound as it would indicate that it would become stronger should the interest rates go up, which, again, could provide expat retirees with some welcome extra cash in their pockets on two fronts (better

exchange rate and better interest rates). I would urge people right now not to lock themselves into the low rates currently offered by the banks, and if you are considering a pension annuity STOP immediately.Come and talk to me at my office based at Cabo Roig if you have any concerns about how your

Adoption Corner

A Firm Grounding

BENJI Benji was found with his sister hiding under a car, near a river. He has settled into kennel life quickly and is a confident, lively seven month old boy, who loves to play with his kennel mate and his toys, but does like cuddles. His sister Betti has already been adopted so it would be great if Benji found his forever home too. For more on Benji, call the SAT kennels in Dolores on 966 7100 47 or email info@satanimalrescue.com

Jumping up is a common behaviour problem facing many dog owners. It's annoying to feel like you're being attacked by an excited and overly exuberant dog the minute you step through your front door. It can also be dangerous for small children. The good news is that you can train a dog to stop jumping. Withhold Attention

JOSIE Almost a year old, Josie was adopted as a tiny kitten with her sister Mollie. Mollie found her loving home, but Josie is still looking and is missing her sister very much. She loves attention and is desperate for someone to give her the love and affection she needs. To arrange to meet Josie and the rest of APAH's cats and kittens please call 630 422 563 or 616 210 850.

Add a Sit Command Once your dog is able to keep all four feet on the floor for a few seconds or more, start asking him to sit. Walk into a room or through the front door, and give the command “sit”. As soon as the dog sits, give him a treat. Practice this over several training sessions. With lots of practice, your dog will be sitting as soon as you walk through the door or enter the room.

The first part of teaching a dog not to jump involves withholding your attention. There are several ways you can do this:

Practice with Other People

As soon as your dog jumps up, turn your back on him. Cross your arms over your chest, and don't make a sound. If the dog runs around to jump again, turn the other way so your back is again to him. Wait for him to stop jumping.

It's not enough that you practice with your dog. You should also involve friends and family in this training. Otherwise your dog may learn only that it's not okay to jump up on you. Having other people help with this training will teach your dog to keep all four paws on the floor no matter who comes into the room.

Another method is to remove yourself altogether. If your dog jumps up when you walk in the door, turn around and walk back outside. If he jumps up when you're inside, walk out of the room. Wait a moment, and step back inside. Repeat this until your dog is calm. Reward Good Behaviour

LEO Leo came to the Los Infirernos Perrera in San Javier as a puppy and is now a big boy that’s aged almost two years! It is the perfect time for Leo to move to a forever home and become part of his own family. If you can help in that regard, then please send an e-mail to losinfiernosdogs@hotmail.com or go onto the Los Infiernos Perrera Supporters Facebook page. All adoptions are subject to homechecks.

REX

Rex is around five months old and was rescued from the streets. He is a Chihuahua/ Spaniel cross and will still be small when fully grown. Rex is vaccinated, good with other dogs, cats and children and is a happy, healthy little boy. To learn more about him, then get in touch with Pets in Spain by calling 645 469 253. www.petsinspain.com

It helps when you're working on stopping unwanted jumping if you keep some treats close at hand. As soon as your dog is standing in front of you with all four paws on the ground, throw him a treat. Give him praise, but keep things low key. Too much excitement and attention from you may stimulate him enough to get him jump up again. Practice Makes Perfect It helps if you can set up the situation to practice with your dog. For instance, if he jumps up a lot when you first walk through the door, spend a few minutes a few times a day coming and going. Don't make a big fuss over the dog, and be sure to step back outside if he jumps up. Reward him any time all four feet are on the floor.

SANDY Sandy is a female Lab mix aged around two and a half years, and she’s currently in a foster home with lots of other dogs and cats. Seagate Wealth Management Pension Pot Too Small To Transfer? Think Again! I recently met with a client who had never considered a pension transfer because he had a company pension scheme and was only with his employer for 3 years. He guessed that his pension fund would be worth around 3k to 5k and not worth transferring. After contacting his company and applying for a pension transfer quotation we found out that the value of his pension fund was actually 37,000 pounds. He decided to transfer his pension and take a lump sum. Another client thought his pension was a moderate 25,000 pounds and after investigation it turned out to be worth over 90,000 pounds. I am staggered at how valuable these seemingly small pension pots are. Time and time again I see so called "small pension pots" turn out to be large pension funds. As interest rates are at an all-time low, transfer values are at their highest. If you have a pension fund and you have dismissed the idea of a pension transfer because you consider your fund will be too small, then please think again. Unlike some financial advisers, we do not have a minimum threshold. You may also have a lost pension that you have not pursued because you thought the pension will be "too little to bother with". I urge you to dig out any information that you have on these valuable pensions and come and see us. You may be surprised at how much they are worth. Here at Seagate we are in a unique position and can offer UK Regulated Pensions along-side Internationally based plans, giving our clients the peace of mind that their pension is being regulated under the watchful eye of the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). We will be happy to give you advice on what cash lump sum and income that you would receive if you transferred your pension. Crook Caught

Dockers Fight

Orihuela police officers chased a bank robber to Bigastro and arrested him after he held up a bank in Arneva and walked away with eight thousand euro. The man struck at a branch of Caja Rural Central and demanded money, whilst pointing a gun at the cashier. He even wore a wig as a rudimentary disguise, before making his getaway in a car, with the local police able to chase him down. All of the money was recovered, whilst the robber was handed over to the National Police.

New Recruits

A two-day dock strike is set to start in Spain on Monday, with union leaders saying that 110 million euro of exports could be lost in

the 48 hour walkout. Three other 48 hour strike periods have been named on the back of two days of industrial action last week,

with unofficial walkouts also taking place. Unions are calling for better work contracts and salaries for their members.

In The Money

Torrevieja's local police force have two new members in the shape of Athos and Eko, who passed their training course recently at the Valencia Safety and Emergencies institute recently, along with their two handlers. The two dogs will specialise in sniffing out drugs and will be officially part of a new canine unit that will be created in Torrevieja.

Spain’s traffic authority, the DGT, bagged over 31 million euro in traffic fines in just the first three months of 2017, with 801 thousand penalties handed out over the period. The Madrid area was the most lucrative at just over two million euro, whilst the Valencia region came fourth in the amount of money raised, standing just short of one and half million euro.

Poor Old Torry

were thrown out by a tribunal. A third objection by one of the three bidders for the Corvera franchise, AENA, who currently run San Javier airport, in addition to the facility at Alicante-Elche, is still being considered.

Metal Nickers

Orihuela local police have arrested two men who stole metal and ironwork from the construction site of an unspecified Orihuela Costa commercial centre. Escalator parts were taken, with the robbers spotted by one of the site owners, who reported them to the police, who caught them on a return visit to pick up some of the material they had put aside. Authorities said that the men had a prior history of robberies.

Torrevieja has once again topped the National Statistics Institute (NIE) figures for having the lowest annual income of any Spanish city according to their survey released this week. The study is based on three-year-old Urban Indicator returns under the European Audit project to measure the so-called quality of life in 109 Spanish cities.

The average income of a Torrevieja resident was just short of 14 and a half thousand thousand euro per annum in the new survey, which was a rise of almost 500 euro over the last 12 months, but still not enough to keep Torrevieja off the top of the poor list. In contrast, the Pozuelo de Alarcón area of Madrid once again came out top at 73 thousand euro, which was a three thousand euro

increase over 12 months. As always, the INE produce raw figures with no interpretation of facts or making points that there are vastly higher incomes in costly cities like Madrid and Barcelona, compared to lower cost areas of the country. Nevertheless, the Torrevieja figures coupled with poverty surveys show the city constantly in a poor position, with no change.

The leader of Spain's main opposition party, the Socialist PSOE, said on Sunday that he would launch a new bid to build an alliance with other opposition forces to try to challenge the minority rightwing Partido Popular minority government. Pedro Sanchez made his comments at the annual meeting of the PSOE congress, which rubberstamped his re-election as leader in May, when grassroots members put him back in power some eight months

after he was ousted in an internal party coup led regional presidents and senior figures including Valencian President, Ximo Puig. The PSOE came second in two elections within seven months behind the PP, with their vote severely dented as people switched to the new and more leftwing Podemos party. Sanchez's attempts early last year to forge an alliance with Podemos and other parties fell flat, but on Sunday he urged rivals to unite against Rajoy in a frag-

mented parliament. "We have an opportunity to come together every week with other parties in parliament to reverse and to dismantle a big part of the laws passed by the PP," Sanchez told cheering party members in Madrid. He said he would take aim at planned labour changes which have been criticised by trade unions for weakening workers' rights, and added that the PSOE would form a group with other parties to coordinate which laws to block or reverse.

Manresa and Vilafranca del Penedès reached 40ºC, with no ventilation whatsoever, as the windows do not open. Many passengers got off the train at the nearest possible station and waited for another one, whilst others braved the elements as they pulled the communication

cord to alert the driver about what was going on. An engineer was sent out to fix the problem when the train stopped at a station, with train company RENFE saying that the windows on the Rodalies lines do not open 'so the air-conditioning can work better'.

Refugee Demo Several thousand protesters marched in Madrid on Saturday urging the government to keep its commitment to accept refugees. Spain has pledged to allow 17,300 refugees from such war-torn countries as Syria, Iraq and Libya to settle in the country, as its part of a Europe-wide commitment to do more to help alleviate the continent's migration crisis. Amnesty International reports that less than 10 per-

cent of the promised numbers have arrived in Spain. Protestors held banners with slogans reading

"Enough excuses, no more barriers," "No one is illegal," and "We want to welcome them now!".

Beetroots with Balsamic Vinaigrette and Mint Ingredients 3 cloves garlic, unpeeled 2 large beetroots (about 1 pound) 1/3 cup low-fat plain Greek yoghurt 1 tablespoon low-sodium vegetable broth or water 2 teaspoons white balsamic vinegar 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil Salt and freshly-ground black pepper 2 tablespoons fresh small mint leaves 1 tablespoon roasted or raw unsalted pistachios, chopped

Method Wrap the garlic cloves together in a piece of parchment paper; wrap each beet separately in parchment. Place the garlic and beetroots in a microwave-safe dish and cook for 3 minutes. Remove the garlic and

set aside, still wrapped. Continue to cook the beetroots in intervals of 2 minutes, until they can be easily pierced with a knife, 8 to 10 minutes. Let sit wrapped in parchment to complete the cooking process and until cool enough to handle, about 15 minutes. Meanwhile, whisk together the yoghurt, broth, vinegar, oil and 1/8 teaspoon salt in a small bowl. Peel the garlic cloves, mash completely and whisk into the vinaigrette. Season with salt and pepper. (Alternatively, make the vinaigrette with the microwave-roasted garlic up to a few hours in advance to allow the flavors to blend. Cover and refrigerate. Bring to room temperature before serving. Peel the beetroots using a paring knife and cut into wedges or slices. Arrange on a platter, drizzle with the vinaigrette and sprinkle with the mint and pistachios. Serve immediately, while still warm.

Brick Chicken with Apricot Couscous

Ingredients For the brick chicken 2 tbsp. cumin seed 2 tbsp. whole coriander 2 cinnamon sticks 1 tsp. sweet paprika 1 tsp. cayenne 1 tsp. salt 60ml olive oil 1 lemon, juiced 1 whole free-range chicken (1.5kg), split (see directions below or have butcher split chicken for you) Extra-virgin olive oil For the mint yoghurt dressing 375ml natural yoghurt 20g fresh coriander leaves 20g fresh mint leaves 2 spring onions, green parts only 30ml honey 1 lemon, juiced Extra-virgin olive oil Salt and pepper For the apricot couscous Extra-virgin olive oil 1 small red onion, small dice

30g dried apricots, coarsely chopped 30g whole almonds toasted, coarsely chopped 150g couscous 375ml chicken stock, warm 1/2 tsp. lemon zest 2 spring onions, green parts only 10g fresh mint leaves, roughly chopped 20g fresh coriander leaves, roughly chopped plus leaves for garnish Salt and freshly ground black pepper Method For the brick chicken: 1) Toast cumin, coriander and cinnamon in a medium saucepan over low heat until fragrant. In a clean spice grinder or coffee grinder, blend spices until fine. Add the toasted spices to a bowl with paprika and cayenne. Season with salt. Stir in the olive oil and lemon juice. 2) Prepare chicken by splitting it down the back and removing the backbone, breast bone and rib cage. Lay the chicken out flat and rub the blended spices all over. Marinate for up to 4 hours or overnight. 3) Preheat oven to 190 degrees C. Heat a large cast iron pan (or other heavy oven-proof pan) over medium-high heat. When hot, add 10ml of extra-virgin olive oil and

place the chicken skin side down in the pan. Cover it with a second cast iron pan (you could also use a more traditional foil-wrapped brick) immediately so the skin doesn't have time to contract. Reduce the heat to medium and cook for 10 to 15 minutes until chicken is golden brown and has a nice crust. Finish cooking in the oven for a further 20 to 25 minutes. Internal temperature between the leg and thigh should register 74 degrees C on an instantread thermometer, when cooked through. 5) Serve with mint yoghurt dressing and apricot couscous. For the mint yoghurt dressing: Combine yoghurt, coriander, mint, spring onions, honey, lemon juice, extra-virgin olive oil, and salt and pepper, to taste, in a blender. Blend until mixture is fully combined and has a smooth consistency. For the apricot couscous: 1) In a medium saucepan add 10ml of extra-virgin olive oil. Add the red onion, apricots and almonds and saute gently over low heat until translucent and slightly fragrant. Add the couscous, then the warm chicken broth. Stir with a fork to combine, add lemon zest and cover. 2) Let sit for 10 minutes, then uncover and add the spring onions, mint, and coriander. Fluff again with a fork. Season, to taste, with salt and pepper. Toss gently to combine. Serve family-style on a large platter and garnish with fresh coriander.

Coconut oil 'as unhealthy as beef fat and butter' Coconut oil is as unhealthy as beef dripping and butter, say US heart experts. It is packed with saturated fat which can raise "bad" cholesterol, says the American Heart Association in updated advice. Coconut oil is commonly sold as a health food and some claim the fat in it may be better for us than other saturated fats. The AHA, however, says there are no good studies to support this.

do, oily fish, nuts and seeds instead of foods high in saturated fats like cakes, biscuits, chocolate and fatty meat." Low fat tips Grill, bake, poach or steam food rather than deep frying or roasting Trim visible fat and take skin off meat before cooking Spoon off fats and oils from roasts, casseroles, stews and curries When making sandwiches, try leaving out the butter or spread: you might not need it if you're using a moist filling

Healthy myth? The advice around which fats to eat can be very confusing. Animal fats, such as lard, are generally seen as bad, while plant oils, such as olive and sunflower, are seen as healthier options. That theory is based on how much of one particular type of fat - saturated fat or "sat fat" - these products contain. Sat fat Saturated fat is said to be bad for our health, although not everyone agrees.Eating a diet high in saturated fat can raise the level of "bad" (LDL) cholesterol in the blood, which, in turn, may clog the arteries and

increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. According to the AHA, 82% of the fat in coconut oil is saturated. That's more than in butter (63%), beef fat (50%) and pork lard (39%). And, like other saturated fats, studies show it can increase "bad" cholesterol. Some claim that the mixture of fats in coconut oil still make it a healthy option, but the AHA says there is no good-quality evidence for this. It says people should limit how much saturated fat they eat, replacing some of it with unsaturated vegetable oils olive oil and sunflower oil,

and their spreads. Healthy swaps According to the AHA, studies show swaps such as this can lower cholesterol by the same magnitude as cholesterol-lowering drugs. Dr Frank Sacks, lead author of the AHA advice, said: "We want to set the record straight on why well-conducted scientific research overwhelmingly supports limiting saturated fat in the diet to prevent diseases of the heart and blood vessels." In the UK, Public Health England advises people to

cut down on saturated fat: the average man should eat no more than 30g of saturated fat a day the average woman should eat no more than 20g of saturated fat a day Nutritional labels on food display how much saturated fat is in products. But experts stress that fat is still an essential part of a healthy, balanced diet. We shouldn't cut out too much. Fat is a source of essential fatty acids and helps the body absorb vitamins, such as A, D and E. Victoria Taylor from the British Heart Foundation said: "To eat well for your

heart health it is not just about reducing fat but reducing specific types of fat and taking care over what these are replaced with unsaturated fats and wholegrains, rather than sugars and refined carbohydrates. "Any change should be viewed in the context of a whole diet approach. The traditional Mediterranean diet has benefits for a range of risk factors for heart disease, not just cholesterol levels. "We recommend replacing the saturated fats in the diet with unsaturated fats - using oils instead of butter and choosing foods like avoca-

Good fat vs bad fat Cholesterol is a fatty substance that can be found in some foods Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol is said to be 'bad' because it can be deposited in the walls of arteries and cause hard plaques to build up that can cause blockages, resulting in heart attacks and stroke High-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol is 'good' because it carries LDL cholesterol to your liver where it is disposed of. A high ratio of good to bad cholesterol is healthiest

'Seductive names' make vegetables more appealing How do you get more people to eat their greens? Give vegetables seductive names, say US researchers. A team at Stanford tried it out on students in the university cafeteria and found veggie sales went up by 25% when indulgent labels were used. "Sizzlin' beans", "dynamite beets" and "twisted citrus-glazed carrots" tempted diners to fill their plates. Healthy labels, such as "wholesome", were a turn-off, even though the dishes were identical in every other way. Seductive carrot... The experiment took place over the whole of the autumn academic term. Each day, a vegetable dish was labelled up in one of four ways: basic - where the description was simply "carrots", for example healthy restrictive - "carrots with sugar-free citrus dressing" health positive - "smart-choice vitamin C citrus carrots" indulgent - "twisted citrus-glazed carrots" The choice of vegetable - beetroot, butternut squash, carrot, corn, courgette, green beans, sweet potato - was also rotated to make sure there was enough variety throughout the week. Each day, the scientists counted how many of the 600 or so diners selected the vegetable dish and, at the end of the

meal time, weighed how much of the food had been taken from the serving bowl. The indulgent labels came out top and included "twisted garlic-ginger butternut squash wedges" and "dynamite chilli and tangy lime-seasoned beets". Seductive names resulted in 25% more people selecting the vegetable compared with basic labelling, 41% more people than the healthy restrictive labelling and 35% more people than the healthy positive labelling. Pulling power The researchers, Brad Turnwald and colleagues, say the findings, published in JAMA Internal Medicine, make sense when you consider the psychology behind food choices. "When most people are making a dining decision, they are motivated by taste. "And studies show that people tend to think of healthier options as less tasty for some reason. "Labels really can influence our sensory experience, affecting how tasty and filling we think food will be. "So we wanted to reframe how people view vegetables, using indulgent labels." Although most of us know that we should eat plenty of veg, too few of us do it.

People are advised to eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables per day. Roughly a quarter of UK adults actually achieve this, however. Prof Heather Hartwell from Bournemouth University in the UK has been leading a European project, VeggieEAT, designed to get people eating more veg. She says no one strategy works for all, but there are lots of ways to boost intake. For some, selecting healthy food is a considered and conscious choice. But Prof Hartwell is also an advocate of "health by stealth" nudging people in the right direction. "Nudges can work. We have looked at using choice architecture, which is product placement, subliminal cues and descriptive tags, to nudge people." For example, putting a picture of tasty looking fruit on supermarket trolleys could help "nudge" consumers to select more produce from the fruit aisle, she said. Some consumers might buy something "gourmet and healthy" - such as spiralised courgette noodles - simply to impress their friends, she said. "Choice is a really complex thing. But this study suggests that giving vegetables an indulgent tag can help raise their hierarchy."

Sugar Supports Growth of Candida There is overwhelming scientific evidence that excessive sugar in the body encourages the growth of Candida. Candida is a harmful fungus that is responsible for many diseases especially infections of the urinary and genital organs. It will also spread to the lymph system from where it invades the entire body. When sugar levels are high in the body, Candida sabotages the immune system by producing a substance that sticks to protective immune cells and prevents them from attack. Scientists from New Zealand found that sugar more than any other substance in blood acted as a major inducer of Candida infection. Studies also show that sugar facilitates the transfor-

Vegetarian dieting may lead to greater weight loss "Dieters who follow a vegetarian eating plan lose nearly twice as much weight," the Daily Mail reports following the results of a new study. Researchers randomly

assigned two groups of people with type 2 diabetes to either a vegetarian diet or a standard weight loss diet. They found those on the vegetarian diet lost more weight and more body fat.

Both diets involved reducing daily calorie consumption by 500 calories a day. The standard weight loss diet in this study is a diet recommended for people with diabetes. The vegetari-

an diet consisted of leafy vegetables, nuts, fruit, and grains. After six months, researchers found those in the vegetarian group had lost about twice as much weight as those in the other group – 6.2kg, compared with 3.2kg. But this isn't surprising – more people stuck to this diet compared with those on

the standard weight loss diet. The media failed to make it clear that the study was carried out on overweight people with type 2 diabetes, and therefore the findings may not apply to other people trying to lose weight. If you have type 2 diabetes and you're overweight, you should aim to

lose weight as this will help control your symptoms. Some people may benefit from switching to a vegetarian diet, but it's not a magic bullet. The important thing if you're trying to lose weight is to reduce your daily calorie intake and get more exercise. Learn more in the weight loss guide.

Alicante City The city of Alicante is a dynamic and buzzing centre for tourism and business that sits centrallyamid all the other Costa Blanca towns along the Mediterranean coast. While it is a busy port and tourist hotspot, it is also a typical working and thriving Spanish city, one that has maintained its traditional charm and uniqueness and which hasn’t been taken over by mass tourism.

Alicante is the second largest city within the Region of Valencia and is also the capital of the Alicante province. It is a fascinating contrast to the towns that surround it and combines the liveliness of a tourist resort, the elegance of a city and the laziness of relaxing on the beach perfectly. One mustn’t forget, either, that the history of Alicante dates back thousands of years and you can just absorb the ambience of days gone by as you stroll through the old quarter, which is located at the foot of the magnificent Santa Bárbara Castle, the main focal point of the city. Location Alicante is probably the most accessible city on the Costa Blanca. Just 11km north of Alicante-Elche airport, you can easily travel to the city centre and arrive within 15 minutes of leaving the airport. There are regular buses that leave from the departures levelthat will deposit you right in the heart of the city. There is a tram, but this cannot be picked up from the airport. Instead, it runs along the coastal road from Alicante centre up to Benidorm. By car, just take the N332 and this will bring you to the Paseo Explanada de España, the main palm tree-lined avenue that runs along the coast and harbour at the bottom of the city. You can take this road if you are travelling from the north or south of Alicante. The A-7 motorway will also bring you to Alicante. Alicante is also situated on the Renfe railway line. From Madrid it takes just 3 hours, and just 5 from Barcelona.

By Julie Day

The city centre The city centre is simply a hubbub of activity all day long. You won’t be short of things to do through the night, either, if you’re into partying until breakfast time. Alicante is great as it offers something to everyone. Whether it’s culture, history and architecture that float your boat, or trendy designer shops, classy restaurants and cool lounge bars and clubs, Alicante has plenty to keep you occupied throughout your stay. If you like to go out at night but can’t keep up with the late Spanish hours, there’s a new “tardeo” trend in Alicante that you may enjoy. This consists of going out drinking and eating in the afternoon instead of the evening. People start off in the market area and buy food and drink from the stalls then make their way down town to the bars. The area around Calle Castaños is really buzzing from around 6pm.

The Santa Bárbara Castle, which regally sits at the highest point of the city on the Benacantil Mountain, is definitely well worth a visit – as is the climb up to the site for the fittest of visitors. You can also reach the castle by driving up or taking the lift from the footbridge opposite the Postiguet beach. From the Paseo Explanada de España, which sits just off the lovely sandy beach and is filled with palm trees offering shade, market stalls and cafés and restaurants, you can walk up through the maze of narrow cobbled streets that make up the old quarter. Here, you will find many of the city’s old and historic buildings, museums, churches and art galleries intermingled with hotels, restaurants, shops and bars. Property As you can expect from a major city, property in the centre itself is predominantly made up of apartments, flats and studios. You won’t find any detached villas or sprawling chalets in the heart of the city, although there are a good number of townhouses, some of which have been built into the surrounding mountains. Out in the residential parts of the city is a wider range of options, and in these areas you will find many villas, chalets and large houses with pool complexes and gardens. However, if you prefer the hustle and bustle of city life, yet also enjoy relaxing on the beach or in the mountains, you couldn’t really find a better location anywhere in Spain other than Alicante! Click here to view our range of properties in Alicante. History As with many towns and cities located along the eastern coast of Spain, Alicante has a history that dates back thousands of years and is one of the very first places that was inhabited on the peninsula. The Greeks were the first to establish a settlement here in about 1,000 BC, although hunter-gatherer tribes lived there from 7,000 BC, and they were followed by the Romans some 800 years later. The Moors conquered Eastern Spain during the 8th century and reigned in Alicante for 500 years until 1246 when it was recaptured by Christian King Alfonso X. From then on, Alicante was built up to become an important centre for trade, particularly around the port area, yet it was continually under attack, as were many other coastal locations, from the Berber pirates. Alicante’s prosperity declined in the 18th and 19th centuries, yet has been brought back to life through tourism in the last 50 decades or so. Places to visit • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

I'm always suspicious of over-hyped new TV shows, especially if they start appearing in the summer schedules. Take the new BBC 1 Saturday night set-piece Pitch Battle which is essentially a revamp of an old show called Last Choir Standing dating back to 2008, which was undeservedly pulled after one season on the excuse of poor ratings. No hope then for Pitch Battle, which got a debut figure akin to Harry Hill's spectacular flop revival of Stars In Their Eyes over two years ago, and that's despite all the massive pretransmission publicity that the BBC threw at it. Heaven knows what rating it will get tomorrow, which will make the Dermot O'Leary-presented turkey Runaway Car or even Don't Scare The Hare (remember it?) appear to have been hits. Like with so many Saturday shows, Pitch Battle is essentially too long at 90 minutes a throw, with too much”filler” to pad out the programme, probably at the behest of the accountants. The idea is fine

though, with show choirs competing against each other (I'm sure I've seen some of them before on Britain's Got Talent) in what is a tribute to the Pitch Perfect movie franchise. The quality of the choirs was excellent in Saturday's opener and we actually got the judges, led by Gareth Malone, actually concentrating on the acts, as opposed to themselves. The problem with Pitch Battle came down to the length with too many rounds and too intricate a format for the casual non-choir fan viewer to engage with. It was just too much with not enough variety for something that really could have worked at an hour. I suspect the programme duration put off too many viewers from giving Pitch Battle a try, especially with the fun-filled The Voice, Kids (better than the grown-up version?) delivering big-time in a great outing for ITV last Saturday. To make things worse for Pitch Battle, 30 minutes before it started, Channel Five paraded the successful return of Blind Date hosted

Pitch Battled Out by Cilla Black's old chum Paul O'Grady, who did her proud in what was a delightful nostalgia fest and proved there's plenty of life left in the Blind Date format. Eclipsing Pitch Battle in the hype stakes is the new glossy Sky Atlantic thriller Riviera, which I really had high hopes for, based on the pedigree of the writers and the cast. Every ad break on every Sky channel appears to have had a plug for Riviera, similar to that for Jamestown a couple of months ago, but at least Jamestown ended up being an entertaining view, despite the grating line of “from the makers of Downton Abbey”. The strapline for Riveria's PR team was, “this year's Hotel Manager”. What a absolute lie! In my one episode test, Riviera quickly rivalled ITV's The Loch for the drama disappointment of the year, and proved that expensive location shoots in the south of France don't make up for a plodding storyline, which could not be saved by a fine cast. The shocker is that

Riviera comes from awardwinning writer Neil Jordan, who gave us film gems like Mona Lisa and The Crying Game, and TV fun like The Borgias. Riviera sees a youngish woman (Julia Stiles) left widowed by the sudden death of her mucholder mega-rich husband, apparently blown up on a ship with a whole bunch of other people. There's a lot of nastiness from her dead

husband's first wife and kids (and pretty much everybody else), and there are no laughs or black humour to balance things up, which Jordan gave us in The Borgias. I really couldn't care less and I waited unsuccessfully for something to kick in, which it didn't. It's like going to a dentist and being told that after 10 minutes of trying, he can't extract your tooth, and you

have to come back the following day for him to start all over again. It's that kind of pain level. Rivera's a real let-down for what should have been some glossy fun, but at least the Sky hype machine has now turned full-blast to next month's return of Game of Thrones, which hardly needs any publicity, but at least it will stop the endless Riviera promos.

BBC One announces documentary The Betrayed Girls

In May 2012, the revelation that nine Asian men were guilty of the grooming, rape and sex trafficking of teenage white girls shocked the nation. But the police and social services had known about the abusers for years, and the abuse went far beyond Rochdale. From Rotherham to Keighley, it was happening across cities and towns in the north and beyond. Following the acclaimed drama, Three Girls, this feature-length documentary hears from the real people at the heart of the story, some of whom are speaking for the first time. It features the harrowing testimony of the victims whose stories have not been told before and includes interviews with those individuals brave enough to speak out on behalf of the girls, including

Manager of the Rochdale Crisis Intervention Team Sara Rowbotham (pictured above), former Detective Constable Maggie Oliver and Chief Prosecutor Nazir Afzal. The film reveals how it wasn’t just the professionals whose job it was to protect the girls who ignored their plight. This was a story where many from the police, social services, politics and the Muslim community chose to look the other way. It was commissioned by Charlotte Moore and Clare Sillery. The commissioning editors are Clare Paterson and Maxine Watson. It is being made by Sandpaper Films; the director is Henry Singer (The Falling Man; Baby P: The Untold Story), the producer is Rob Miller and the executive producer is Simon Ford.

Produced by Spungold TV, host and animal lover Caroline Quentin (pictured above) shares her love for ‘fugly’ – fabulously-ugly furry friends. The 60 minute show will feature everything from hairless guinea pigs to one-eyed dogs and will follow Caroline as she journeys to the mecca of muttugly animals: The World’s Ugliest Dog Contest in Petaluma, California. Starting her journey in the UK, Caroline will meet some of the country’s ugliest pets and explores why Brits love

an underdog. She’ll learn about their unique personalities and meeting each pet’s devoted and quirky owners, who’ll share how their unconventional animals have opened their hearts and changed their lives. Along the way Caroline will search for Britain’s ugliest pooch to take to America and represent the UK. After Caroline has selected her favourite and ‘fugliest’ canine, she crosses the Atlantic to California, along with the dog and its owner, to fly the flag for the UK and enter the fugly hound into the contest. Caroline Quentin said “I believe that beauty is only skin deep and I want to find out if it’s as true of pets as it is of people. As the proud owner of five dogs and six cat I reckon I’m the woman to find out”.

Hi Richard. "Remind me later" the most clicked on sentence in Hi Richard, recently, I had a deluge of emails purporting to be my computer! As usual I click on remind me later but have the details of my new one. should I let it happen? All best wishes Shelagh For me it was very easy, as I have never had an account with PayPal.I replied to the first two or three telling them that I do not have; nor ever have had; an account with them. But the mails kept on coming, so I started sending them to the Gmail "report spam" box. They have now stopped. I don't know whether the originator has stopped sending them or whether Gmail is intercepting them. But I thought you might be interested.CheersRobin Haha, your opening line made me laugh Shelagh, yes I think you might be right! In terms of Windows 10 Creators Update, it’s a BIG Hi Robin, sounds like a success story to me, in general it’s not a update, and will take a long time to update (even on a fast Internet good idea to reply (as this reinforces to the spammer that you are connection), but yes, I do subscribe to being “up to date” as being the receiving the emails) but you did the right thing in marking them as spam as this helps Gmail identify these senders and block them, not best approach, so choose a time convenient to you and go for it. only from your email but from everyone else’s too – good man!

Koepka had three successive birdies from the 14th to match the total set by Rory McIlroy when he won in 2011 on a par-71 layout compared to this par 72. His final round was only bettered by Japan's Hideki Matsuyama who posted 66 to tie for second on 12 under with overnight leader Brian Harman (72). England's Tommy Fleetwood, shot a level-par 72 to end fourth on 11 under. The 26-year-old from Southport, playing in just his second US Open, was unable to keep pace with playing partner Koepka on the front nine. "It hasn't sunk in, obviously, yet, and probably won't for a few days," Koepka said after his closing 67. "That's probably one of the coolest things I've ever experienced.” "I felt like I was playing really good. Obviously, the wind picked up and I felt like that played right in my hand, and I felt confident all week. "To feel as confident as I did on a Sunday of a major and coming down the stretch was pretty neat." On joining the likes of Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods as a US Open winner, Koepka added: "To be in the same category as some of the guys on this trophy is unbelievable. This is truly special, it really is."

PICKING UP THE PACE

The subject of the pace in a round of golf is a very contentious one, and one that fills every golf column around the world, writes JOHN FARMER. All golfers have an opinion, with differing views about what should be done to get things moving. For me the four sections below are key factors in the length of a round. Course Design/Layout The time required to play a course is determined by the design and layout. If a course has long distances between green and tee boxes, it will take longer to play all other things being equal. A course designed with well-protected greens, undulating greens, and numerous obstacles will, by nature, be difficult and take longer to play. The time to complete a round of golf is baked in at the start. Some courses simply take longer to play than others and therefore this factor is not in the control of course management. Course Maintenance and Set-up A course can control how the actual course is maintained and set-up. Hazard markings, drop areas, length of rough, and local rules of play are areas that course operators can manage to improve the overall pace-of-play. There are simple things that can be done like keeping the banks around water hazards not too closely mown so that golfers will not spend time looking for balls in the water. Or creating drop areas for certain difficult

hazards rather than requiring golfers to re-tee or hit provisional shots. Marshalling A course that is well staffed with course marshalls monitoring the pace-of-play can help maintain a decent pace. The keys to a successful marshalling programme are clear communication with golfers as to the expectations and following through with consistent enforcement by well-trained people. Implementing an effective marshalling programme is a real challenge. First is the cost of staffing and training. Second, an aggressive marshalling programme runs the risk of upsetting customers. These two issues result in many courses either abandoning the whole idea of marshalling the course or just not putting a lot effort into the programme, and of course the pace-of-play as a result suffers. Slow Players Slow golfers are without doubt the primary cause of long rounds. Telling a slow golfer to “pick up the pace” has little or no effect. Why, because it is the equivalent of telling someone to speak English that only knows Spanish. They don’t know the language. They don’t know how to play at an acceptable pace. They must be taught the fundamentals.

Cracking Encounter

A thrilling game saw La Manga chase down a big target at Torrevieja on Saturday to win by five wickets. Having been put into bat, Torrevieja reached a highly competitive 235 for 4, after a quiet start. The first over saw 12 runs for the home side, but then things ground to a slow pace, with the next 14 overs yielding just 29 runs. Torrevieja tried to up the rate, and after losing Kieran Wood for 30 and Ciaran Guichard for 18, Paul Harvey and Dave Reid put together a partnership of 108. Harvey with 63 was caught on the boundary going for another big hit whilst Reid fell for 36 steadily accumulated runs. Rahul Maini and Paul

Michael then continued to hit out and put on 40 runs over the last five overs to give what Torrevieja thought would well be a winning total of 235. La Manga had other ideas and after getting used to the pitch, they started to score steadily until Dave Williams was bowled. Such was the nature of the game that he had survived to earlier appeals. First a run out; then given out until the wicket keeper admitted dropping the ball before removing the bails; and then an LBW appeal that was confirmed by the umpire until Torrevieja captain, Kieran Wood said the ball had hit the bat first. Robbie James came and went, before 15-yearold Charlie Hunt came in

with La Manga needing 160 runs off the last 20 overs. He and Stuart Simpkins pushed the score along until Stuart was dismissed after amassing a well-deserved 81. Teenager Hunt continued to score and together with his father, Ian, Charlie scored the winning runs off the 38th over, as he walked back to the pavilion with 61 undefeated runs, and an impressive win, with an over to spare. Both sides came out with credit in a fine match, with Torrevieja travelling to Alfas this weekend, before taking on a team from Bonalba in a friendly on Saturday July 1st. Spectators will be made very welcome and there’s more information at torrevieja-cricket@live .com

Torry Triathlon Over 500 people took part in last Sunday’s third Torrevieja triathlon, as the athletes were tested over the disciplines of running, cycling, and swimming. Víctor Moreno Carrillo de

Albornoz of the Alcantarilla club in Murcia was the men’s victor in just over two hours, whilst Mónica Sansano of the Ilicitano Triatlón club won the women’s event.

Nico Honoured

Teenage Torrevieja tennis star Nicola Kuhn was the special guest of Torrevieja council last week at a reception held to honour his achievement of winning the French Open Junior doubles title with his partner Zsomor Piros of Hungary. Kuhn also made it to the singles final in the junior section at Roland Garros, as reported in last week’s Courier, and is now concentrating on improving his ATP tour ranking with a target of getting into the world’s top 200 within six months. That means he will be concentrat-

ing on ATP Futures events in Belgium and Germany in the next few weeks, rather than going onto the grass of Wimbledon for the junior events. Kuhn was welcomed by Torrevieja mayor José Manuel Dolón (right) and sports councillor Víctor Ferrández, and was presented with a salt boat at a ceremony in the council chamber to recognise the 17-year-old’s achievements in tennis. Dolón praised Kuhn’s progress in the sport due to his hard work and for putting

Torrevieja in the international spotlight. “He is a great sportsman and a great person”, the mayor added. Ferrández said that the council were behind the youngster all the way, whilst Nico Kuhn said that Torrevieja was very much in his heart, with his family living in La Mata, and his coaching team based in the city. He said that he was aiming high and wanted to be like one of his biggest tennis heroes Roger Federer, and that means becoming the best player in the world.

In The Water

In the sprint contest, Ángel Montesinos from Orihuela won the male category, with Esther Rico Iniesta from Elche was first over the line in the ladies section.

The recent fourth race day for the Sailing Association Mar Menor (SAMM ) was a windy affair, with the breezes higher than the than the strengths forecast which did not bode well for the competitors. In a 10 knot wind, Sirocco crossed the start line alone at the big boat start time as Mistral had retired a few minutes before. She would

not steer, a re-occurring problem that still has not been resolved. The dinghies followed 10 minutes later. Within minutes the first of many capsizes happened, with a total of six in all, and with so many boats in trouble at the same time, a quick call was made to "Pro Vela Sailing" asking if they could assist with getting people out of the water and getting

the boats back to shore. Although the underlying wind did not increase much above 10 knots, the freak sudden gusts and the many capsizes led to decision to call things off at the halfway point of the four laps. It was certainly a great disappointment to the two crews who had managed to stay upright, but that that’s the way the cookie crumbles.

U-Turn Cris

Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo is said to be reconsidering his decision to leave the club after president Florentino Perez gave a strong public show of support for the star, in the wake of his tax row with Spanish authorities over image rights. Meanwhile reports from Spain’s state broadcaster RTVE and the ABC newspaper suggest that Ronaldo is willing to pay 14 .7 million euro in back taxes - the amount he has been accused of defrauding by a prosecutor - ahead of a court hearing next month. . Broadcaster RTVE said, without identifying its sources, the 32-year-old would make this payment as a gesture of good will. The report added Rolando will reiterate at a hearing on July 31st that he is innocent and has never hidden any income from the taxman or committed any tax fraud in Spain. Representatives for Ronaldo declined to comment. The prosecutor says the Real Madrid forward knowingly used a business structure to hide his image rights income in Spain between 2011 and 2014. Ronaldo has denied the charges. Over his future at Real Madrid, Ronaldo, is said to have been moved by Perez's impassioned defence of him, with sources suggesting that is now said to have begun to rethink his decision to leave Madrid after eight years, on the back of Perez's backing on him on the Onda Cero radio station. Manchester United and Paris St Germain have been alerted to Ronaldo's potential availability following the revelations of his disenchantment with his predicament in Spain, but his former club have played down talk of a return to Old Trafford. Perez who has been re-elected as Real president, claimed the tax issues facing the player were a "misunderstanding" but that he had yet to speak with Ronaldo, who is currently on Confederations Cup duty with Portugal in Russia. “Cristiano has a contract and he is a Real Madrid player. I have not talked with Cristiano,” said Perez. "Life throws up unexpected situations but one has to take them on and find a solution”, he added. "This is all very strange. Cristiano is a good guy, I will have to talk with Cristiano and see what's happening." That conversation may include Ronaldo having a 200 million euro offer on the table to join Paris St Germain which the Marca newspaper suggests he could use as a “bargaining chip”. Ronaldo, who scored the only goal in Portugal's 1-0 win in the Confederations Cup over Russia on Wednesday, was crucial to Los Blancos' success in 2016-17, as they won both La Liga and the Champions League. If Ronaldo tells Perez his desire to move is undimmed, then Marca reports that the Madrid president will look to cash in - leaving Ronaldo to present PSG and their 'money no object' offer as his way out of Spain. PSG missed out on the French title last term and failed to make a dent in the latter rounds of European competition, after throwing away a 4-0 first leg lead against Barcelona at the second round stage. As such, the French club's hierarchy are looking to add more quality this summer, and a mega-money deal to land Ronaldo is at the top of their agenda - having realised that Kylian Mbappe won't be switching Monaco for the Parc des Princes. Former Real Madrid star Luis Figo insists he believes Ronaldo will still be wearing the white of Los Merengues next season however. He told Gol's 'Directo Gol Tarde' programme: "A lot of things would have to happen for him to leave.” "It is a personal decision and if a person really wants something to happen then it will end up happening, but I see it as unlikely."

Diego’s Desire

Diego Costa has told Atletico Madrid he wants to sign for them again, according to UK media reports. The Chelsea striker (pictured playing for Atletico) revealed on June 8th that he had received a message from manager Antonio Conte telling him he was not in his plans at Stamford Bridge for next season. If Costa moved back to Atletico he would not be able to play until January because FIFA has banned them from registering players during this transfer window. The Spain international has always stated a desire to one day return to Atletico where he played between 2010 and 2014.

Big Name Pledge

Barcelona sporting director Robert Fernandez has said the club will make "big-name signings" as they look to strengthen new coach Ernesto Valverde's squad. After missing out on the Liga title to Real Madrid last season and losing to Juventus in the Champions League quarterfinals, Barca want to invest in players who can improve the team immediately. Hector Bellerin, Marco Verratti and Ousmane Dembele are reported to be their three top targets as they look to add a right-back, a central midfielder and a forward. But Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund are not keen to sell, and there are doubts over Barca's ability to afford all three in the same window.

A Club Is Born

A new rugby union club initially aimed at women, has recently been set up and it’s called Bettas Torrevieja RFC. The team is planning to expand and to eventually become a club for all ages and for both genders. The ladies train every Wednesday and Sunday during the summer months on the athletics pitch opposite the Nelson Mandela stadium in Torrevieja, starting at 8.30 pm. Everybody is welcome, irrespective of experience, and for more details about the club and the training sessions, contact Javi on 603 727 179.

Mir In Charge

As widely expected, the ex-Elche player and former Elche Ilicitano coach Vicente Mir (pictured top) has been appointed as the new coach at the club, as he tries to get them back into the Segunda division next season after last month’s relegation. Mir makes a return to Elche after a coaching stint at Real Murcia, and he told reporters that the club has to be ambitious and to win matches. “We aim to put together a good squad of players that is full of variety, and we need to be positive”, Mir added. “We are a big club and our rivals need to know that we will be the team to beat”. Elche also formally unveiled their new sporting director in the shape of another ex-Ilicitanos player, Jorge Cordero (pictured below), who recently has been scouting for Cadiz. “Vicente Mir is a good man who is respected at Elche”, said Cordero. Meanwhile the expected departure of players has started with Pelayo Novo going to Romanian first division side CFR Cluj, after two seasons with Elche, whilst Pablo Hervias who has been on loan from Real Sociedad, is set for a permanent move to Real Zaragoza. On the arrival side, Elche have signed defender Gonzalo Verdú from FC Cartagena, and goalkeeper José Juan who has spent the last five seasons with Segunda division side, CD Lugo.

Just Too Much

The coach of a Valencian regional youth team, Serranos B (based in Valencia City and pictured) has been sacked after a 25-0 win - because the club's management decided the margin of victory went against the spirit of the game. After defeating the Benicalap C team, the Serranos B's under-11 manager was removed from his position. "We believe in encouraging respect for your opponents. After the result, we decided that the manager should leave," said Pablo Alcaide. But the manager’s solicitor insisted his client had not pushed players to score as many as they could. The manager instead instructed his side "to pressure only in their own half" in the eight-a-side game, but Benicalap C "continued to attack and left spaces in behind", the solicitor said. The game was Benicalap C's final match of the season. They finished bottom of the league with zero points and 247 goals conceded from their 30 matches. The El Pais newspaper reported that such one-sided scores are not infrequent in Spanish youth football, but many clubs stop counting once they have scored more than 10 goals.

League Fixtures

Relegated Hull City under new boss Leonid Slutsky (pictured) will begin their 2017-18 English Football League Championship season away against former manager Steve Bruce's Aston Villa side on Saturday August 5th, in one of the early highlights of the League fixtures that were published on Wednesday. Sunderland, who finished below the Tigers and Middlesbrough at the bottom of the Premier League, start at home to Derby on Friday, August 4th. Last season's beaten play-off finalists Reading are away at QPR. League One champions Sheffield United begin at home against Brentford. Millwall, who beat Bradford City in the play-off final at Wembley to join the Blades in England's second tier, travel to face two-time European Cup winners Nottingham Forest in their opening fixture. League One runners-up Bolton Wanderers host Leeds United on Sunday, August 6th, while Middlesbrough, the third team to drop out of the top flight, are away against Wolves. Following Hull boss Leonid Slutsky's first game in charge at Villa Park, his first league match at home is against Burton Albion, a club going into only their second season in the second tier. Middlesbrough manager Garry Monk, another new boss at a club relegated from the Premier League last term, has an opening-day game against a Wolves side which will be managed for the first time by Nuno Espirito Santo, following the departure of Paul Lambert. Monk will return to his former side Leeds on 18 November, a club that appointed ex-Apoel Nicosia manager Thomas Christiansen as his replacement. Christiansen's first match at Elland Road will be against Preston North End - the side that finished just below them in the table as they both missed out on the play-offs last term. Norwich will be another side looking towards the top six in 2017-18, and former Borussia Dortmund II coach Daniel Farke begins his tenure with a trip to Fulham. The final of the three to have been relegated last term, Sunderland, are still managerless after Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes rejected the chance to join, but will hope to have someone in place for the match against Derby County in the opening game of the season. Blackburn will face Southend away in their first match in League One, whilst fellow relegated clubs Wigan Athletic and Rotherham United will go to MK Dons and Fleetwood Town respectively. League Two champions Portsmouth host Rochdale, while play-off winners Blackpool will go to beaten League One play-off finalists Bradford. Doncaster Rovers start at home to Gillingham, while Plymouth Argyle begin the campaign away at Peterborough. League Two newcomers Forest Green Rovers will host Barnet in their first ever league game. National League winners Lincoln will begin the campaign away at Wycombe. Relegated Coventry start at home to Notts County, while Swindon begin away at Carlisle, Port Vale travel to Crawley and Chesterfield host Grimsby.

La Manga Boost

La Manga Club’s popularity as one of the world’s leading golf resort destinations continues to grow after receiving two new accolades, as well as being in contention for three more top golf industry honours later in the year. For the fourth year in a row, the venue was the only resort in mainland Europe to receive acclaim in the ‘Best Golf Resort in the World’ category at the 2017 Ultras Awards, being shortlisted alongside top American venues Pebble Beach and Bandon Dunes, St Andrews and eventual winners The Gleneagles Hotel. La Manga Club was also named as one of the world’s best family-friendly golf resorts in Great Golf magazine’s recent inaugural list of the ‘Top 100 Greatest Golf Resorts’, while the resort is a leading contender for three top awards at the 2017 World Golf Awards – which it will host for the first time in November. As well as being nominated for the accolade of ‘Europe’s Best Golf Venue’, the resort has also been shortlisted for two further honours, with La Manga Club’s South Course in the running to be named as ‘Spain’s Best Golf Course’ and its five-star Hotel Principe Felipe nominated for the title of ‘Spain’s Best Golf Hotel’. Jose Asenjo, general manager of La Manga Club, said: “La Manga Club is one of the most famous names in world golf and to receive these new plaudits makes everyone at the resort very proud. Accolades like these are reward for all the hard work that has taken place over last four decades to establish the resort as one of the world’s top golfing destinations.”

Must Do Better

Spain’s Maverick Vinales says a podium finish is a must at Assen as the MotoGP World Championship battle heats up this week. Vinales is only seven points ahead of Ducati's Andrea Dovizioso, who has emerged as a title contender following back-to-back wins at Mugello and Catalunya. However, the Movistar Yamaha rider is confident of a strong result this weekend at the Dutch TT and feels the circuit will play to the strengths of the YZR-M1. “TT Assen is a good circuit for the YZR-M1 and also for my riding style it's quite good. I've been doing really good races there in the past. I like it and I always enjoy riding here,” Vinales said. “After the difficult race in Catalunya we arrive in Assen extra motivated because we really need to be on the podium and take as many points as possible. We can't afford to struggle in the next races, so for sure we will give our 100 percent.” Vinales' best result in the MotoGP class at Assen was ninth on the Ecstar Suzuki in last year rain-affected race.

Back To Baku

After the thrills of the Canadian Grand Prix earlier this month, the Formula One circus is now back in Europe with Azerbaijan hosting the European Grand Prix this Sunday. Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton won in Montreal to cut Sebastian Vettel's lead at the top of the drivers' championship to 12 points. The Ferrari driver endured an eventful race, fighting back to fourth after having to change his front wing early on. This season is turning out to be a battle between the two drivers who have both won three races each so far. Vettel took the chequered flag in Australia, Bahrain and Monaco, while Hamilton has won in China, Spain and Canada and will be hopeful of success in Azerbaijan, boosted by a dominant showing last time out in Montreal. Hamilton and Vettel look set to continue their battle for the title, with the two drivers now well clear of the chasing pack. Hamilton's team-mate Valtteri Bottas is third and already 48 points behind Vettel after seven races. Mercedes showed in Canada they have worked hard to resolve the problems they struggled with in Monaco, when Hamilton was left searching for the right setup and struggled for grip. Yet Vettel may not be too disappointed, as an aggressive drive in Canada saw him fight back to fourth after dropping to 18th, and his display impressed supporters who named him driver of the day in Montreal. Baku hosted the race for the first time last year, which saw Vettel finish second, while Hamilton was down in fifth after suffering technical problems. Meanwhile, Hamilton is in the "best place" he has been in since joining Mercedes four years ago, according to his team boss Toto Wolff. Wolff said he has been impressed with the way Hamilton is handling the see-sawing nature of the tight title duel between Mercedes and Ferrari. "Lewis is in the best place I have seen him during any of the last five years since he joined the team," said the Mercedes motorsport boss. "Not only because he had a great weekend in Montreal but because he is coping so well with the difficult days. This is what the very best are made of. When the fight gets tough, they get over it quickly and maximise their opportunities." On the back of their first one-two race finish of the season in Montreal, Wolff says Mercedes aim to keep that momentum on the streets of Baku, a race that Nico Rosberg won by nearly 20 seconds last year. Elsewhere in the pack at Baku this weekend, attention will again focus on the growing acrimony between McLaren and Honda, after Spain’s Fernando Alonso was forced to retire with engine failure in Canada. The team are yet to score a point this season, and while the chassis is strong the engine is unreliable and lacking in power, and the team appear to be rapidly losing patience.

BROAD ENOUGH TALKING! DOUBT

England are monitoring Stuart Broad's fitness before the first Test against South Africa after a recurrence of the paceman's long-standing heel injury. Broad left the field on Wednesday after bowling one over for Nottinghamshire in their win against Leicestershire. Fellow bowlers Chris Woakes and Ben Stokes are doubtful for the first of the threeTest series at Lord's from 6 July, but James Anderson is fit again.

ALVES FREED LIONS IN 1ST TEST SHOWDOWN

Juventus have confirmed they will release right-back Dani Alves from the final year of his contract. Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is known to be interested in the 34-year-old, whom he knows from their time together at Barcelona. Juventus chief executive Beppe Marotta said that Alves had "expressed a desire to try a new experience". Marotta said Juventus were attempting to reach a "mutual termination" of Alves' contract and wished the Brazilian good luck for the future.

British and Irish Lions coach Warren Gatland says he wants to end the "trash talk" in the build-up to Saturday's first Test against New Zealand. Gatland wants "rugby to do the talking" when the tourists meet the All Blacks in Auckland tomorrow (9.35 am kickoff). The New Zealander did say he was happy to be "getting up the nose" of All Blacks counterpart Steve Hansen. But he added: "It's not about me - this is about the Lions." Hansen has criticised the Lions' style of play and suggested last week that morale in the tourists' camp could be damaged by Gatland adding six players to his squad. But speaking yesterday, he said: "It's not about the coach. Well, it shouldn't be. "It's got to be about the team and what you're trying to do as a team, and what you're trying to build." Ireland flanker Peter O'Mahony will skipper the Lions at Eden Park after impressing in the back row in the final tour game against Maori All Blacks. Tour captain Sam Warburton is among the replacements. Welshman Liam Williams and England's Elliot Daly are surprise inclusions in the back three, alongside another Englishman, Anthony Watson. England's Maro Itoje misses out to former Lions skipper Alun Wyn Jones in the second row.

Kieran Read has been named as All Blacks skipper after returning from injury. Gatland said: "We know it's going to be a tough encounter. Let's let the rugby do the talking because there's been enough trash talking already. "Let's get excited about what could be a fantastic series. A couple of sideline things have taken the focus away from that." The first of the three Tests between the sides takes place at a venue at which the All Blacks are undefeated in 23 years. But Gatland said his side must take confidence from their victories over the Crusaders and the Maori All Blacks. "We squeezed the life out of those two teams and we won't stop being aggressive defensively," he said. "To play against the All Blacks you've got to have a strong set-piece, you need a platform to be able to work off to start with. "I think we've played some lovely rugby. We struggled at the start of the tour, but we've outscored opponents nine tries to three in the last four games." He vowed not to let his players be goaded into deserting the suffocating tactics that have underpinned their potent wins over the Crusaders, Maori All Blacks and Chiefs. The second Test takes place in Wellington on July 1st, before the teams return to Eden Park on Saturday, 8 July.
