MADRID TAKES OVER

pain is to start suspending Catalunyan autonomy tomorrow (Saturday), as its regional leader threatened to declare independence. The government said ministers would meet to activate Article 155 of the constitution, allowing it to take over the running of the region. It is thought the measures implemented could range from taking control of the regional police and finances to calling a snap election by dissolving the regional parliamnent. Catalunya’s president Carles Puigdemont said the region's parliament would vote on independence, backed in a disputed referendum on October 1st, if Spain "continues repression".

"The Spanish government will continue with the procedures outlined in Article 155 of the Constitution to restore legality in Catalunya's selfgovernment," the Madrid government statement said yesterday. "No-one doubts that the Spanish government will do all it can to restore the constitutional order." Article 155 of Spain's 1978 constitution, which cemented democratic rule after the death of dictator General Franco three years earlier, allows Madrid to impose direct rule in a crisis but it has never been invoked. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy (pictured on Wednesday) set the deadline of 10.00 am yesterday

for Puigdemont to offer a definitive answer on the independence question, and called on him to "act sensibly". "It's not that difficult to reply to the question: has

Catalunya declared independence? Because if it has, the government is obliged to act in one way, and if it has not, we can talk here," he said in parliament on Wednesday.

GUILTY AND INNOCENT

T

wo former general managers of the failed CAM bank, Roberto López Abad and María Dolores Amorós (pictured) have been given three year jail sentences for false accounting in a major embezzlement case in Madrid, which also saw two other defendants given prison terms. The ex-CAM president Modesto Crespo and three directors were acquitted, with the National Court judges absolving Sabadell, who took over CAM, as well as the CAM foundation and insurers Caser of any liability. Former CAM bosses and directors were arrested nearly four years ago in a

major fraud investigation into its activities. CAM, which used to be Spain’s 10th-biggest bank and was highly prominent in the Costa Blanca and Murcia areas, was taken over by Banco Sabadell as part of a shake-up to stabilise the financial sector which was hit hard by the collapse of a building boom in 2008. CAM was initially taken over by the Bank of Spain in July 2011, with the management being sacked, and nearly three billion euro pumped into it to keep it going. Bank of Spain inspectors said there were serious deficiencies in CAM’s bosses which led to big losses in

risky real estate operations. The inspectors also noted that the directors had awarded themselves multi-millioneuro early-retirement packages. Before the bailout, CAM’s management had reported a net profit in the

first quarter of 2011 of 38.9 million euro, only for the profit and loss account three months later displaying a loss of over a billion euro. CAM was subsequently sold to Banco Sabadell for a nominal euro.

A refrigerated meat lorry overturned on the Alicante-bound carriageway of the AP-7 last Fridayafternoon, with frozen beef strewn all over the road. The accident happened close to Cox, at around 6.15

pm, forcing the closure of the northbound lanes for approximately 60 minutes, with no other vehicle involved, and the 30-year old driver remaining trapped before he was freed by Orihuela firefighters and taken to the nearby hospital.

actual punch in the face from Gray had not been strong enough to injure Wilmot, but Wilmot did slip and fall as a result of the hit, causing his head to hit the pavement. That, according to the judge, meant that the incident, though tragic, could not be ruled as a homicide. Gray was ordered to pay 110,000 euro in compensation to Wilmot's mother and two brothers, who all live in Javea, and he was given a 22-month prison sentence, which under Spanish law he does not serve, as it is a first offence. Prosecutors have launched an appeal saying that the sentence is too

lenient, and have called for four years behind bars, and want to pursue a charge of homicide. Gray's lawyer Mariana Ivanov is to appeal on the grounds that she claims that Mr.Wilmot fell to the ground purely by a slip, and it was nothing to do with him being punched by her client. Witnesses at the time claimed that Wilmot had been verbally provoking Gray inside the bar and then followed him and his girlfriend into the street. When Wilmot continued his drunken rant and then lunged at Gray, the exboxer delivered a punch, something that he denied during his hearing.

Defence and prosecution lawyers are appealing a sentence handed to former boxer, Robert Gray, who became involved in a drunken argument with 42year-old fellow British national, Terence Wilmot, on a Costa Blanca road in April last year. Wilmot died on Paseo David Ferrer in Javea, after he cracked his head on the pavement outside a bar, with 46-year-old Gray (pictured left in court) being found guilty by a Benidorm judge of punching Wilmot, but on a count of injury, rather than reckless homicide, which is what prosecutors were after. The judge ruled that the

Unions at Torrevieja Hospital claim that there were not enough treatment rooms and beds to deal with the high patient demand in the casualty department last weekend. The unions say that proper procedures in providing extra facilities were not followed, and they claim the service “collapsed” on Sunday, with 23 people waiting for admission. Health managers disputed the claims and commented that the appropriate protocols were put into place with extra staff and an additional 15 beds made available on Saturday in light of the increased weekend pressures.

Appeal Rejected The Valencia Supreme Court has upheld a 12 and a half year jail sentence handed down last year to a 43-year-old Torrevieja father of three, who was convicted of stabbing his wife´s brother eight times during a brawl in the Calvario area of the city in January 2015. The killer, Nizamuddin K, is an Indian national who ran an Indian restaurant on Avenida de La Mancha in the Aguas Nuevas area of the city, whilst the victim also worked in the hospitality trade. The two men had fallen out over an 850 euro debt, and Nizamuddin K man parked up his car and pressed the front door bell of the victim’s home on Calle Clemente Gosalvez(pictured on the night), and asked him via

the intercom to come outside. His brother-in-law, aged 31, came out and a street fight started with the victim being stabbed by a large knife, with Nizamuddin K then fleeing the scene in his vehicle, and being arrested

later in Aguas Nuevas. Nizamuddin K's lawyer had appealed for a reduction of five years in his sentence because had drunk some beers, and also that he had offered the victim's family his restaurant as restitution.

Failed Robbery

A man who tried to rob a Torrevieja bank and escape with six thousand euro was arrested by local police officers on Monday morning. The robber struck shortly before 9.00 am at the La Caixa branch on Avenida de

Gregorio Marañón and used a fake gun to force the manager to hand over the money. The 44-year-old man, who has a history of previous robberies and had only just been released from prison,

was caught in the act by the police, who responded quickly when an alarm was sounded. He was handed over to the Guardia Civil ahead of an appearance in front of a Torrevieja.

A Hero In Death

A Eurofighter pilot from Santa Pola taking part in last Thursday's National Day celebrations in Madrid sacrificed his life, after his plane crashed when he returned to his base in the Albacete area. 34-year-old Borja Aybar was flying back home to Los Llanos after being involved in the flypast in the capital, and he was just metres from the air base when his craft nose-dived to the ground and burst into flames. The jet came down close to La Pulgosa park with his wife and four-month-old baby boy witnessing the tragedy, along with many people in the area enjoying the bank holiday. In a remarkable sacrifice,

it's believed that Borja did not eject from the plane as his only priority was to successfully steer the Eurofighter away from any built-up areas. He was brought up in Santa Pola from the age of 12 when his family moved there from Ciudad Real, and he went to the Spanish air force academy in San Javier in 2005. Santa Pola mayor Yolanda Seva passed on the council's condolences to Borja's family, saying that they were well respected and liked in the community. Meanwhile a member of the Catalunya Left Republican party (ERC) has been suspended for a tweet

making comments about how pilots should be breathalysed in the tragedy. The ERC stressted that the controversial tweet was written by Domingo Mir 'in an entirely personal capacity' and that it in no way reflected the views of the party. Mir said: “If the tweet was unfortunate, I apologise to anyone whom I may have offended, but in no way did I wish to upset the deceased or his family.” “I only wanted to denounce something that is the situation in general and to call for something we consider perfectly normal on the roads to be extended to the air, where it is even more prudent.”

Uncaring Man

A 57-year-old man has been jailed for 12 years by the Alicante Provincial Court for sexually abusing his 85-year-old mentally ill mother in law. The court in Elche handed down the sentence for the assaults that happened two years ago, with the unnamed man acting as

one of her carers because of her disability. The assailant made recordings of some of the abuse on his mobile phone, which he then downloaded onto a computer. He pleaded guilty to the charges and was also ordered to pay 20 thousand euro in compensation, as well as legal costs.

Passenger numbers at Alicante-Elche airport last month have produced another September record, and the facility is only just 100,000 short of reaching and beating last year's record total, with months to spare. Returns for September show a rise of just under 11% compared to a year earlier, with 1.43 million pas-

sengers using the facility, with cumulative figures for the year showing a 13% rise over nine months, compared to the same period in 2016. September was the 34th successive month of number rises at Alicante-Elche, with 10.88 million passengers passing through the airport so far this year, with British travellers accounting for 45 percent of last month's fig-

ures. Over 141 thousand passengers used San Javier airport last month, with increasing services and users leading to a rise of over five percent compared to September last year. Passenger numbers are up by over nine percent this year, with 80% of last month's traffic being to and from the United Kingdom.

Response Home The Torrevieja local police rapid response unit (GRO) consisting of 15 if has finally moved to a new base at the ex-tourist office at Alto de la Casilla overlooking La Mata, and with easy access to the N-332. The move to the building from temporary premises in La Siesta was held up due to an outstanding tax debt of nearly 700 euro, which Torrevieja mayor Jose Manuel Dolón paid out of his own pocket. The GRO had to leave the ex-tourist office in the Plaza de Capdepont nearly two years ago when part of the roof caved in.

partnership with the local councils under the Aigües d'Elx and Agamed brands. Registration can be done by the Hidraqua website (www.hidraqua.es) or by going into any of their offices in Alicante Province.

Valencia’s tourism chief Francesc Colomer attended the official launch of next weekend’s second Vega Baja Gastrocultural festival in Torrevieja, with 18 city restaurants getting involved in the event, which is three more than last year, The festival highlights the region's cuisine, and will run between Friday October 27th and Sunday October 29th, with low-priced tasting dishes, including desserts, available for people to try. Colomer (pictured by Objectivo Torrevieja shaking the hand of hospitality association president, Joaquín Guillamó) said that

the three days was an important important to showcase local food as a way of attracting tourists, whilst Torrevieja mayor José Manuel Dolón (pictured

Arsonists Strike

Three people were killed in the northern region of Galicia at the weekend, where 17 blazes sparked by arsonists have been fanned by strong winds from Hurricane Ophelia. "They are absolutely intentional fires, premeditated, caused by people who

know what they are doing," the head of the regional government, Alberto Nuñez Feijoo, said. “We have not had a situation like this in the past decade. We have never deployed so many means at this time of the year," he added. Prime Minister Mariano

Rajoy, who is from Galicia, expressed his condolences to the victims in a Twitter message. Five wildfires raged near Vigo, Galicia's biggest city, which forced the evacuation of a shopping mall and a PSA Peugeot Citroen factory on the outskirts of the city.

Bankia Boost

State-owned Bankia has processed double the number of home mortgages in the first eight months this year, compared to the whole of last year, in another sign that the property market is improving in Spain, along with the introduction of a new commission-free mort-

gage. Between January and August of this year, Bankia agreed to nearly 11 thousand mortgages, compared with 5,373 over the whole of last year – an increase of 130 percent over a 12month period and 104 percent on the same eight

months in 2016. The launch of Bankia's commission-free mortgage in February has largely helped, as shown by the fact that in the whole of 2016, the bank lent 817 million euro, compared with 1.18 billion euros in the first eight months of 2017.

Avocado Heaven

The Isla Bonita food production company has grown a 'diet avocado', which is 30 percent lower in fat, faster to ripen and slower to go off. The avocado is grown in carefully monitored climate and soil conditions to 'preserve the nutritional benefits', meaning they have just as many vitamins, minerals and other health-giving features as 'traditional' avocados. These new fruits taste the same and their pulp is just as soft and buttery as 'mainstream' avocados, Isla Bonita says. Highly-nutritious and full

of vitamin E, a whole avocado contains about 330 calories and between 20 and 30 grams of fat, so dieticians recommend that anyone who is concerned about their weight or cholesterol levels should restrict themselves to a maximum of half an avocado a day. The lower fat version is due to launch later this month at a trade fair in Madrid. A representative for the company said that the light version could mark the "second big jump in the development of the avocado market".

Expensive Help The Spanish equivalent of the UK Consumer's Association, FACUA, has launched a case against Ryanair, led by chief executive Michael O' Leary (pictured in defiant mood), for its customer service telephone line being a premium-rate 902 number. FACUA's move comes in the wake of Ryanair's string of cancellations due to staff and rota problems, in addition to the way it handled some customers during last week's French air traffic controllers strike. Spanish consumer laws stipulate that all helplines for 'essential' services, such as telephone and internet companies, electricity and gas, must be free of charge, and for all over services may not cost more than the 'basic' tariff. This means they may cost no more than a standard call to a mobile phone and should, ideally, be a national number with a prefix that allows users to identify where in the country it is based. National calls are often free of charge on mobile or landline packages, but where they are not, their tariff is very low. Numbers starting with 902, among others – as opposed to 900, which is a free-phone line – carry a higher cost, which is the case for Ryanair's customer service line from Spain. British and Irish ex-pats have access to the company's UK and Irish number, which can cost a considerable amount, depending on the phone service they use. No email address is available on the Ryanair website and emails sent to customers generally come from a 'no reply' address, although the website does have a 'chat box' option. This means following up complaints or claims can be difficult without making expensive phone calls. The 902 number is also used for bookings and post-booking enquiries. FACUA in the Balearic Islands has filed complaints to 12 regional governments in Spain over

the premium rate line, and earlier this year, Ryanair and another 19 airlines were reported by FACUA for breaking the law by only having customer service lines with highcost numbers or with a foreign prefix, such as 0044 for the UK.

Hidden Secrets A farce, called Key For Two, and set in a Brighton flat is the latest A.C.T.S. (Actors Community Theatre Society) production hitting the stage at the end of the month. A.C.T.S. was formed by Angela and Tony Goddard to provide "a professional drama company for the area", and the latest show is a good old fashioned bedroom farce with load of innuendo but no nudity! Harriet, played by Yolanda Adams (pictured in a strange moment!), is the pivotal character of the show, and she has an arrangement with two gentlemen friends who do not know about the existence of each other. Key for Two will be staged for three nights at the Benijofar Cultural Centre between Thursday October 26th and Saturday October 28th, with curtain-up at 8.00 pm. Tickets cost just eight euro each, with proceeds once again going to the Benijofar Crisis Appeal Fund. Tickets are available by calling 646 277 724 or send an email to tickets.acts@gmail.com.

Studio 32’s production of the Irving Berlin musical White Christmas will be staged at San Fulgencio’s Cardenal Belluga theatre from Wednesday November 29th through to Saturday December 2nd, with curtainup at 7.30 pm. The show contains some all-time classic songs including the appropriately named song “Sisters” - made famous in the UK by the Beverley Sisters. The Haynes sisters, Judy and Betty (played by Suzy Bradley, pictured left, and Ann Bell, pictured right) are a double act looking for their big break. This is Suzy’s second show with Studio32,

and her first in a major principal role. A trained dancer, Suzy is loving the demands of singing, dancing and acting that the role requires. Ann has been with the company for several years, taking on a number of roles including Mrs Scrooge in their winter production of A Christmas Carol last year. Studio32 are once again supporting the San Fulgencio Alzheimer’s Association with this production, as well as other local charities. Reserved seating tickets costing 10 euro can be obtained by calling 602 454 033, or by emailing tickets@studiothirtytwo.org.

Extended Break

A group of friends ended up being stranded in Benidorm after a Ryanair cancellation and the pressing of a wrong telephone button, saw their four-day holiday end up in a 10-day break that cost them an extra thousand pounds. Valerie Smith from Middlesbrough was enjoying a weekend away with 13 friends when on the last night they discovered their Ryanair flight from AlicanteElche airport was cancelled due to last week's industrial action by French air traffic controllers. Instead of making a return last week on Tuesday after a four-night stay, Valerie and two other friends were stuck in the resort until Monday of this week. The three of them mistakenly accepted a £58 refund - leaving them stuck almost a week longer than planned. Valerie, 57, said: “It started on Monday at about 2.00

pm. The girl organising the trip got a text saying the flight had been cancelled." “We tried ringing Ryanair and we were put on hold and then it cut off. We went out for tea, and the next morning when we were supposed to go home we still didn’t know what was happening.” When some of the party tried to search online for answers, they accidentally pressed a button that accepted Ryanair’s offer of a refund. Some managed to book on to a flight from AlicanteElche to East Midlands Airport later in the week, while Valerie and her friends Jan Lythe, 59, and Irene Wake, 63, remained stuck in Benidorm until Monday, when they caught an Edinburgh-bound flight. “It’s cost us a thousand pounds in food, transfers, lost wages and accommodation, and we only got 58 pounds each back.”

Some people in Benidorm stepped in to assist the women, and helped them find a hotel and a new flight. A Ryanair spokeswoman said:- “We apologised to all affected customers, who were contacted by email and text message and advised of their options: a full refund, free rebooking on to the next available flight or free transfer on to an alternative flight." "The customer in this case opted for a full refund which has been processed". Though the case of Valerie and her friends was an extreme one with a wrong button pressed, The Courier has come across reports of people unable to get an alternative flight back to their home airport for up to six days after last week's strike, with the same problem applying to customers looking to travel to Alicante-Elche from the UK and Ireland.

Continuing Arrivals

More boats filled with North African migrants have been arriving on the Alicante Province and Murcia coasts over the last week. Two vessels landed in the Guardamar area early on Friday morning at

the Moncayo and El Campo beaches, with the Guardia Civil being notified at around 8.00 am that a number of immigrants were spotted walking in the area. The two vessels were discovered by the Guardia,

and a search of the nearby vicinity resulted in them rounding up all of the 20 Algerian male nationals that were in them. Three men were taken to Torrevieja Hospital for minor medical treatment.

Clothing Shifters

High street fashion stores are running mid-season sales to help stimulate sales of their autumn-winter 2017 collections, which are not shifting because of the unusually warm weather for the time of year. In general, fashion sales are rising, with a year-on-

year increase of 1.4% seen up to September, but unseasonably high October temperatures are delaying the buying of winter items. Industry federation ACOTEX says the 1.4% sales increase is not such good news as it appears, since last year saw that

month's figures plunge by 7.3%. ACOTEX believes it has more to do with the weather than any financial crisis in consumer spending, as September was warmer than average and beaches are continuing to be busy through October.

New Look Road

Major improvements to the CV-912 road between Almoradi and Dolores were officially inaugurated by the Valencia region’s Public Works director-general Carlos Domingo (pictured second-left) on Wednesday. His department has

funded the 365,000-euro project, which has included the creation of two new pedestrian/cycle lanes, and a new roundabout at the CV901 junction to Daya Nueva. The road surface has also been resurfaced, with up to eight thousand vehicles a

day no longer having to put up with potholes and ruts. Domingo said that the work was a stretch of road that featured many turnings for industrial and business units, and he believed that it would substantially reduce the risk of accidents.

The referendum went ahead on 1st October despite being suspended by Spain's Constitutional Court. The Spanish government tried to stop voting and hundreds of people were hurt in scuffles with police at polling stations. The Catalan authorities claim that just under 90% of voters backed independence - but turnout was only 43%. However, the issue has an impact outside of politics, with the possibility of independence threatening to cause economic turmoil. Spain has had to slash its growth forecast for 2018, following the unofficial referendum, with Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría revealing hotel reservations had also plunged by up to 30 per cent as the crisis bit into the nation’s finances. Speaking after a weekly cabinet meeting, she said: ”The events that we are experiencing in Catalonia make us more prudent. In fact, if there were no quick solution to this issue we should be forced to lower expectations of economic growth for the year 2018.” The government expects Spain's economy to grow by just 2.6 per cent next year, with Ms de Santamaría adding that there would be no “quick solution” to the crisis and this would have to be lowered. Experts have warned that the conditions created by the Generalitat could plunge Catalonia into a deep recession. The dramatic financial warning came amid reports Spaniards were boycotting Catalan products, with sales of some dropping by up to 70 per cent.

The unrest has already had major repercussions in terms of business, with dozens of companies having already moved their legal headquarters from Catalonia, further cementing rising concerns that growth in the region could take a hit, and by extension to that of Spain as a whole.Banco Sabadell, the country’s fourth largest bank, has already announced it will move out of the region to Alicante over fears for its future. CaixaBank, another large bank has also decided to move its registered office to Mallorca in light of the situation in Catalonia. KALI Kali is a small kilo female terrier aged around 18 months, and is currently in a foster home with lots of other dogs and cats. Kali was rescued from a perrera and promptly gave birth to four puppies who have all been rehomed. She is loving and likes to be cuddled, and would be a faithful loving companion, but she is not great with other females but is fine with males! For more about Kali please call PEPA on 650 304 746 or email p.e.p.a.animalcharity@gmail.com.

Last week we talked about your furry friend suffering from all the noise caused by firework explosions, but there is a similar problem (and in some ways less predictable especially in the middle of the night) and that’s a big thunderstorm. It can be heart-breaking to watch: Even before the first clap of thunder, otherwise well-behaved dogs begin to pace, pant, cling to their owners, hide in the closet, or jam themselves behind the toilet. In severe cases, they'll claw through drywall, chew carpets, or break through windows in their escalating panic. Thunderstorm phobia in dogs is real, not uncommon, and shouldn't be ignored, experts say. Most of the time, they don't grow out of it on their own, and many will get worse with time if nothing is done. Veterinarians don't know all the triggers but suspect dogs are set off by some combination of wind, thunder, lightning, barometric pressure changes, static electricity, and low-frequency rumbles preceding a storm that humans can't hear. According to one theory, dogs experience painful shocks from static build-up before the storm. Anxiety often gets worse throughout the season as storms become more frequent. "

MINI Mini was brought into the SAT kennels with her sister, Magic. They had been seen near a very busy road for several days but they were both in good condition. Mini is a sixmonth-old small crossbreed who is now fully vaccinated and micro-chipped. She is more confident than her sister and they both love to play and have cuddles. For more about the girls please contact the kennels on 966 710 047 (leave a message) or email info@satanimalrescue.com.

PEGGY

18-month-old Peggy was rescued in a terrible condition after wandering in a village, having been hit by a car. She had to have her leg amputated and is now fully recovered, with three legs proving to be no disadvantage to her! She is quite a dominant dog and would do well to be with another dog of a similar size as she is happy in the company of another dog. For more on Peggy please call PEPA on 650 304 746 or email p.e.p.a.animalcharity@gmail.com

Dogs with other fearful behaviours, such as separation anxiety, also seem more prone to panic. Some dogs with storm phobia are also frightened of other loud noises, such as fireworks or gunshots, but others are only afraid of storms. There's no easy fix, and unless your dog is only mildly affected, it can be difficult to treat, vets say. But there are lots of tools to reduce your dog's distress during stormy weather. 1. Reward calm behaviour all year Many owners make the mistake of trying to console and pet

a fearful dog that's whimpering or climbing on them, but that just encourages the panicky behaviour. Practice getting your dog to settle on command. During the storm, you can also try distracting the dog by offering its favourite toy, playing fetch, petting it, and feeding treats as long as the dog remains calm. You are trying to get them to forget about the storm and replace the fear with something positive. 2. A safe haven That might be an open crate, a basement where the dog can't hear or see what's happening outside, an interior room with music playing, or a bathroom.Let your dog decide: Notice where he goes during a storm, and if possible, allow access to it.Be sure your dog can come and go freely, since some animals become more anxious if confined. 3. Play your dog some storm sounds Play a CD of thunder recordings at low enough levels that don't frighten your dog, while giving him treats or playing a game. Gradually increase the volume over the course of several months, stopping if your dog shows any signs of anxiety. The goal is to get your dog used to the sound of thunder, and associate it with good things. 4. Ask your vet for help Your vet may have some more ideas and can assess whether medication may also be needed. A study by vets at the University of Georgia found that 30 out of 32 dogs with storm phobia showed significant improvement when given medication combined with behaviour modification and desensitisation. Owners gave some medicine to their dogs at the start of the day, based on a weather forecast, and the results were good.

Seagate Wealth Management

Keeping It Local Many people think that once they have signed on the dotted line for their pension transfer, savings plan or investment portfolio, that is the end of their relationship with their financial adviser. Nothing could be farther from the truth as far as we at Seagate are concerned. This is where the relationship starts. If you were one of the many thousands of people who took out an endowment mortgage in the eighties with a promise of the mortgage being paid off and a Porsche on the drive, only to discover twenty years’ later you were in fact not going to be able to clear the mortgage, then you will understand why investments of any type need to be nurtured. As a result of the lack of supervision and management, what looked a good investment to start with proved unsuitable over the long term. Independent financial advice is vital in all stages of managing your finances, but on-going support and monitoring of the investments is the only way to ensure the results you are looking for can be achieved. Ideally, your financial adviser should be local to you, with an office complete with a team to support them, and in turn their clients. We believe our success is a result of two fundamental principles: the strength of the relationship between our advisers and their clients and our distinctive approach to investment advice. We offer regular review meetings in a professional environment to ensure you are kept up to date with how your pensions and or savings and investments are performing. This ensures you can work towards and achieve your financial goals, and of course the peace of mind that comes with being in control. If your financial adviser does not offer this level of service, or you are thinking of transferring your pension or investing, then give us a call on 965 704 338 or e m a i l : Contact@SeagateWealth.es

Case "Shelved" A tourist who claims she was drugged, stripped and robbed in Benidorm is considering suing the Spanish authorities after it emerged the case was shelved after just two days, according to the Daily Record newspaper. Lucie Armstrong believes she and her husband Scott were attacked after their drinks were spiked during a night out in the resort back in June, as previously reported in The Courier. The couple came round at different locations, wearing only underwear and miles from the bar where they had been. Lucie also fears she may have been sexually assaulted after bruising was found on her thighs. It has now emerged that police made their report to a judge within two days of speaking to the couple and the case was effectively abandoned at that point. Lucie said: “It’s disgraceful. Our recollection of that evening is very clear one moment and then completely gone the next. I’ve travelled the world and have never become unconscious and then woken in the open air wearing only underwear. It’s obvious we were drugged. They haven’t done any investigation. I’ll consider a legal challenge over the

way they’ve dealt with this.” The couple believe they were attacked on June 18th. The pair, both 29, say they had their drinks spiked, possibly by two English women, at the popular Western Saloon bar. They were rushed to hospital the next morning where they were given treatment

and had blood samples taken. Lucie claims they’ve never been told the test results. The college lecturer took photos of her injuries, including scratches on her thighs and what appears to be a footprint on her lower back. Despite this, the police

filed a report to the investigating judge saying they could find “no evidence of a crime having been committed”. It was handed to Benidorm’s Juzgado de Instruccion No3 court on June 20th. A source said: “The judge would have shelved the

case. The report would have been archived so that, should any other evidence emerge later, the case could be reopened.” A police spokesman in Alicante confirmed that officers found “no evidence” to stand up the couple’s claims..

He said tests showed both had consumed “a very large amount of alcohol”. The results of drugs tests are unknown. The boss of the Hotel Ambassador complex, which includes the Western Saloon pub, said in July that police had not been in touch to request CCTV footage.

Closing Appeal A Halloween First

The owner of two of the three beach bars closed by Torrevieja council in the summer for operating without a license has launched an appeal against the ruling. The shutting down of the popular bars located in the

Cala Piteras area of Punta Prima came after a search of council files revealed that no municipal licenses had been applied for, with the premises being open since 2009. It was previously reported

that besides Torrevieja council, neither the Valencian Government or the Coastal authority had given any permission for the bars to be built on what is classified as non-building land.

the Orihuela Costa, we wanted to do something like a childrens parade,” he added. Mar Ezcurra said:- “We hope as many youngsters from the area as possible will get involved on the day and we encourage every family from the Orihuela Costa to take part.” Leaflets promoting the day have been printed in English and Spanish, and are being distributed around the area.

Some time ago now, on my Lenovo laptop, I downloaded what I believed to be Malwarebytes free. Then a couple of weeks ago I started getting popups telling me that my free trial was coming to an end, and offering me a "special price" to continue. These counted down to the end date. Now every time I switch on there is a pop up with three options:

Hi. Richard you helped me before can you tell me how to get rid of attached screen that keeps coming on. Hope you can help me as annoying every time I switch on I have to swipe screen away then not enough time to put my pin in before tablet screen blanks and I have to start again.Regards.Ray.

Hi Ray, the screen that you’re referring to is the lock screen – the one with the pattern of dots on it. It’s a security feature, designed to help you keep the tablet safe, however it can be removed, you need to unlock the tablet and then go to Settings > Security > Lock and from there you can select the method that you I always click the middle one to stay downgraded, and then OK it.But the next time I prefer (either none, swipe, pattern or pin). switch on (which may be later the same day, or the following day), the box with the three choices is there again. Please advise, CheersRobin

A

Hi Robin, Malwarebytes is not a free program, you can use it, in its free trial mode for 14 days and then after that you can continue to use it but the real-time protection will be disabled. Personally, I think it’s a great tool and a good backup to any antivirus program you’re using and is well worth the money, but you don’t have to buy it, you can continue to use it manually and put up with the nags. Remember in its “degraded” state it will no longer protect you automatically, so you should perhaps do a scan weekly or monthly to ensure that you have no bugs lurking around.

Spanish Lamb With Sherry, Honey & Peppers

Ingredients 1kg lamb shoulder, trimmed of excess fat, then cubed 1½ tbsp olive oil 1 large onion, roughly chopped 1 red pepper, halved, deseeded and sliced 1 yellow pepper, halved, deseeded and sliced 1 green pepper, halved, deseeded and sliced 2 garlic cloves, grated to a purée ½ tsp paprika 250ml medium sherry 250ml lamb stock generous pinch of saffron threads 1 tbsp sherry vinegar 1½ tbsp honey 1 tbsp finely chopped parsley, or chopped toasted

blanched almonds cooked couscous, to serve

Method Make sure your lamb isn’t too damp – pat it dry with kitchen paper if you need to, otherwise it won’t colour well. Heat 1 tbsp olive oil in a large casserole dish and brown the lamb over a high heat in batches (if you crowd the pan the meat will sweat and not brown). Remove with a slotted spoon as you go. When all the lamb is browned, add the remaining oil and cook the onion and peppers over a medium heat until the onion is golden and the vegetables are softened. Add the garlic and paprika, and cook for a further 1 min, then add the sherry and bring to a simmer.

Put all the lamb back in the pan, along with the stock, saffron, sherry vinegar and honey. Season and bring to just under the boil. Turn the heat down, cover the pan and leave to cook very gently for 2 hrs, turning the meat every so often. In the last half hour of cooking time, remove the lid so that the sherry and stock can reduce. You want to end up with completely tender meat in a flavoursome gravy – how long this takes will depend on how wide your pan is so you may need to give it longer than 30 mins. Check the seasoning. You’re unlikely to need to adjust the vinegar or honey but you might want to sweeten the dish slightly. Scatter the parsley or almonds on top (or use both). Serve with the couscous. Prep: 15 Mins Cook: 2 Hours 30 Mins Serves: 4 - 6

Treacle Tart

Ingredients

honeycomb, broken into shards (optional)

For the pastry 250g plain flour, plus extra for dusting 125g unsalted butter, chilled and chopped 75g icing sugar 2 egg yolks For the filling 700g golden syrup 50g honey 250g breadcrumbs ½ grapefruit, zest only 100ml red IPA beer 3 medium eggs

Method To make the pastry, put the flour and butter in a bowl and rub together with your fingertips until it resembles breadcrumbs. Mix in the icing sugar followed by the yolks. If the pastry feels too dry, add 2 tbsp water. Shape into a ball, flatten it out into a disc, wrap it in cling film, then chill for 30 mins. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface until big enough to line a 23cm fluted tart tin, about 3cm deep. Line the tin with the pastry, allowing the edges to overhang. Chill for another 30 mins.

Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Line the tart with baking parchment and baking beans. Bake blind for 20 mins. Remove the beans and parchment and bake for 10-15 mins more until the pastry is golden and crisp. While the pastry is cooking, mix the golden syrup, honey, breadcrumbs, grapefruit zest, beer and eggs together in a large jug or bowl. Lower oven to 160C/140C fan/gas 3. Use a small serrated knife to trim the pastry edges, then fill with the treacle mixture. Bake for 55 mins-1 hr until golden. Scatter over the honeycomb shards before serving, if you like. Child and teen obesity spreading across the globe Child and teenage obesity levels have risen ten-fold in the last four decades, meaning 124m boys and girls around the globe are too fat, according to new research. The analysis in the Lancet is the largest of its kind and looks at obesity trends in over 200 countries. In the UK, one in every 10 young people aged five to 19, is obese. Obese children are likely to become obese adults, putting them at risk of serious health problems, say experts. These include type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke and certain types of cancer, such as breast and colon. The Lancet analysis, released on World Obesity Day, comes as researchers from the World Obesity Federation warn that the global cost of treating ill health caused by obesity will exceed £920bn every year from 2025. Although child obesity rates appear to be stabilising in many high-income European countries, including the UK, they are accelerating at an alarming rate in many other parts of the

world, lead researcher Prof Majid Ezzati from Imperial College London says. Researchers believe wide availability and promotion of cheap, fattening food is one of the main drivers. Charts produced by the World Health Organisation show how weight gain is measured in boys and girls, according to their BMI (body mass index). The largest increase in the number of obese children and adolescents has been in East Asia. China and India have seen rates "balloon" in recent years. Polynesia and Micronesia have the highest rate of all around half of the young population in these countries is overweight or obese. The researchers say that if current world trends continue, 'obese' will soon be more common than 'underweight'. The number of underweight girls and boys worldwide has been decreasing since a peak in the year 2000. In 2016, 192m young people were underweight - still significantly more than the number of young people who were obese, but that

looks set to change. East Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean have seen a shift from underweight to obesity within the space of a few decades. Globally, in 2016 an additional 213m young people were overweight although still below the threshold for obesity. Obesity researcher Dr Harry Rutter, from the London

School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said: "This is a huge problem that will get worse. "Even skinny people are heavier than they would have been ten years ago. "We have not become more weak-willed, lazy or greedy. The reality is the world around us is changing." Dr Fiona Bull from the World Health Organization called

for tough action to crack down on "calorie-dense, nutrient-poor food" and promote more physical activity. So far, just over 20 countries around the world have introduced a tax on sugary drinks. Dr Alison Tedstone, chief nutritionist at Public Health England, said: "Our sugar reduction programme and the government's sugar levy

are world-leading actions, however, this is just the beginning of a long journey to tackle the challenge of a generation. "The evidence is clear, that just telling people what to do won't work. Whilst education and information are important, deeper actions are needed to help us lower calorie consumption and achieve healthier diets."

Magic mushrooms 'reboot' brain in depressed Magic mushrooms may effectively “reset” the activity of key brain circuits known to play a role in depression, the latest study to highlight the therapeutic benefits of psychadelics suggests. Psychadelics have shown promising results in the treatment of depression and addictions in a number of clinical trials over the last decade. Imperial College London researchers used psilocybin – the psychoactive compound that occurs naturally in magic mushrooms – to treat a small number of patients with depression, monitoring their brain function, before and after. Images of patients’ brains revealed changes in brain

activity that were associated with marked and lasting reductions in depressive symptoms and participants in the trial reported benefits lasting up to five weeks after treatment. Dr Robin Carhart-Harris, head of psychedelic research at Imperial, who led the study, said: “We have shown for the first time clear changes in brain activity in depressed people treated with psilocybin after failing to respond to conventional treatments. “Several of our patients described feeling ‘reset’ after the treatment and often used computer analogies. For example, one said he felt like his brain had been ‘defragged’ like a computer

hard drive, and another said he felt ‘rebooted’. “Psilocybin may be giving these individuals the temporary ‘kick start’ they need to

break out of their depressive states and these imaging results do tentatively support a ‘reset’ analogy. Similar brain effects to these

have been seen with electroconvulsive therapy.” For the study, published in Scientific Reports on Friday, 20 patients with treatmentresistant depression were given two doses of psilocybin (10 mg and 25 mg), with the second dose a week after the first. Of these, 19 underwent initial brain imaging and then a second scan one day after the high dose treatment. The team used two main brain imaging methods to measure changes in blood flow and the crosstalk between brain regions, with patients reporting their depressive symptoms through completing clinical questionnaires. Immediately following treat-

ment with psilocybin, patients reported a decrease in depressive symptoms, such as improvements in mood and stress relief. MRI imaging revealed reduced blood flow in areas of the brain, including the amygdala, a small, almondshaped region of the brain known to be involved in processing emotional responses, stress and fear. The authors believe the findings provide a new window into what happens in the brains of people after they have ‘come down’ from a psychedelic, with an initial disintegration of brain networks during the drug ‘trip’ followed by a re-integration afterwards.

Why coconut oil is great for you

Coconut oil is probably the best cooking and eating oil available to us. There are a number of reasons why coconut oil is healthy

and contributes to good health. Coconut oil is packed full of healthy saturated fats. Saturated fats, as the name suggests, are

stable and saturated hydrogen, leaving no bonds that may react other compounds. Saturated fats, for

with free with this

reason, have a high cooking temperature and can withstand very high temperatures without decomposing into toxic compounds. By contrast, other oils, such as vegetable oils like sunflower oil, canola oil, or safflower oil, contain unsaturated fats and have free bonds that can react with tissues inside the body to cause inflammation. Perhaps the important benefit of coconut oil is that it contains one of the most useful fats for maintaining and repairing the brain. This is called Medium Chain Triglyceride (MCT). MCT fats are crucial for preventing the formation of plaques and tangles, the toxic proteins that are known to precede

Alzheimer’s diseases. The presence of these unique MCT oils in coconut oil makes it a recognised oil for preventing and even treating Alzheimer’s disease, as well as other neurodegenerative brain diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease. MCT also has the added advantage of bypassing the normal digestive system and provides the brain with a ready-made source of energy. This is important because glucose, another brain food, may not be accessible to the brain due to glucose intolerance. MCT can bypass this problem and provide the brain with the nutrients it requires to function effectively. Another significant bene-

Hormonal fertility tests 'waste of time and money'

"'Fertility MOTs' are a waste of money," reports suject after researchers in the US found hormones tested in "ovarian reserve" fertility test kits bear no relation to how likely women were to get pregnant – at least, in the early months of trying to conceive. These tests usually measure the levels of three hormones: anti-mullerian hormone

(AMH) follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) inhibin B All of these hormones have been linked to measures of a woman's "ovarian reserve" – how many viable eggs she has left in her ovaries. Researchers analysed hormone levels from 750 women aged 30 to 44 who had previously been trying

to get pregnant for three menstrual cycles or less. The doctors followed the women for 12 cycles to see how many of them got pregnant. After taking account of factors including the women's age, they found hormone levels didn't affect the women's chances of becoming pregnant in any given cycle. Levels of AMH decline

COME AND JOIN US! It’s the perfect time to consider joining Find A Spanish Property as a property associate, as property prices are on the rise, and the market is blossoming. 2016 was a positive year for the real estate market with prices having bottomed out the year before with modest price rises. Things have really kicked in during 2017, in strong contrast to the recession period that kicked in during 2008 and 2009. Official government figures confirm that prices are rising this year, and outside the cities of Madrid and Barcelona, Alicante Province which features the Costa Blanca, and the Murcia region with the Costa Calida tourist area, are two of the biggest areas on mainland Spain which are seeing substantial rises in demand along with price increases. The cranes are back with new homes being built by the coast, and the re-sale market continues to rise, fuelled by low interest rates in Spain. Statistics show that demand for homes from British buyers is still high, despite pessimistic fears last year over the Brexit factor, coupled with purchasers from across Europe, and even further afield. Recent surveys show that the majority of British people living in Spain are aged 65 and over, and website statistics confirm that older British nationals with no mortgage on their UK property are still very much looking at Spain as their area of choice to buy a holiday home, or even somewhere to retire to. It’s a great time to get involved in becoming a seller of real-estate in Spain, especially since most of the cowboys disappeared thanks to the recession nearly a decade ago. We like to think that we’ve played our own small part in helping to seeing them off, by offering an honest business that people are proud to recommend and that we now want to substantially expand.

The costs are cut, and you don’t need any experience of running an agency or experience of sales. TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

British TV, thanks to mainly BBC Four and Sky Arts, have made a stack of great pop and rock music documentaries over the years, and Channel Four entered the fray this week with the George Michael biographical film Freedom. The timing, of course, is touching after the singer-songwriter passed away far too young over Christmas, and this project, put together by him and his manager David Austin, had largely been completed. What we learnt was something about his frailties and his titanic battle in the nineties to be released from his Sony Music contract, in addition to his first gay relationship. There were great pieces from the likes of Stevie Wonder and Mary J. Blige in addition to shock and corking contribution from Liam Gallagher who turned the air double blue! Nothing though from George's Wham partner Andrew Ridgley, which was a shame, and Freedom seemed to be selective in forgetting George's arrests in California and London;

A Wonderful Talent

his relationship with Kenny Goss; and how he cheated death in an Austrian hospital. Those gripes aside, it was still a very moving documentary that had George been still alive, would have repositioned him in terms of answering the questions about why he valued his privacy. Freedom also did not address why we've had no new songs for many years, though David Austin said this week that an album with new material was in the offing. I watched Freedom reflecting on what might still have been from George Michael in the future and wishing that this programme had been made a decade ago to have given him a boost. Did you see the end of ITV's Liar coming? I didn't as nasty Andrew was well and truly dead, and we have a Broadchurch-style “guess the killer” quiz coming for series two, mixed in with flashbacks. I reckon his son did it, but we'll have to wait a long time to see it, as production does not start for another 14 months!

The Great British Bake Off has been magnificent on Channel Four, and who would have said that over a year ago? Tuesday's ending when host Sandi Toksvig could not hold back the tears when likeable Liam was voted off showed how much everybody cares. I loved how the BBC quietly shunted the awful Partners in Rhyme show out of the Saturday schedules without anybody noticing, mainly because nobody was watching it. The bad news is that there are episodes still left to be shown, and my guess is that they will resurface during the daytime as fillers over the Christmas and New Year. What's the best new entertainment show that would have worked on a Saturday night but airs first on a Friday instead? It's Sky One's Sing: Ultimate A Cappella hosted by Cat Deeley and it runs rings round the rubbish Saturday flops like Pitch Perfect and Cannonball. Gimmick-free, we have great performances dominating the show,

and envious BBC and ITV executives must be annoyed that they missed out on this one, plus Deeley (a big name in the US) is a superb presenter. There must be a private contest going on between Graham Norton and Jonathan Ross as to how many guests they can cram

onto their sofas on their shows. Norton had Jane Fonda “squeezing up” last Friday on BBC 1 (no time even for the Big Red Chair), and I so badly wanted to hear more from her, as she was on top form, but only appeared in the last ten minutes. What a waste! Incidentally, I think Ross has

been as sharp as a button in his current ITV series and I loved grime artist Stomzy having a game of The Chase with Bradley Walsh and The Governess. Norton and Ross are great at what they do, and long may they continue, but fewer guests does mean better in my book.

Tuesday Max tells Fi that he’s breaking up with Carmel, not wanting to manipulate her anymore. Fi urges him to reconsider and puts more pressure on him to get the bids. Later, Max makes his move when Carmel is asleep, looking at her laptop for the crucial information needed. However, Max still seems to be at the end of his tether when he demands another meeting with James WillmottBrown.

ITV commissions new drama, Cheat

ITV’s Head of Drama Polly Hill today confirmed commission of gripping, psychological thriller Cheat. At the heart of the drama is the dangerous relationship between university professor Leah, and her student Rose, when, what begins as a seemingly open and shut case of academic deception, quickly spirals out of control, ending in fatal consequences, and triggering a devastating sequence of events that threaten to engulf them both. With two fiercely intelligent minds unwilling to back down, Cheat will keep audiences guessing from the start, exploring just how far we’re prepared to stand up for what we believe, and at what cost. Commented Polly Hill: “Cheat is a fiendishly engaging four part drama

David Tennant leads an allstar cast in The Highway Rat

Magic Light Pictures, the Oscar-nominated entertainment company, brings to life another magical world from the UK’s number one picture book duo, Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. The Highway Rat airs on BBC One as a festive family highlight this Christmas. This enchanting half hour animated special will be voiced by a stellar cast of British acting talent, featuring David Tennant as the Highway Rat, Rob Brydon as the narrator, Nina Sosanya as the Duck, Tom Hollander as the Squirrel and Frances de le Tour as the Rabbit. First published in 2011, The Highway Rat is about a ravenous rat who craves buns, biscuits and all sweet things. Tearing along the

highway, he searches for sugary treats to steal, until his sweet tooth leads him to a sticky end. “Give me your pastries and puddings! Give me your chocolate and cake! For I am the Rat of the Highway, and whatever I want I take.” A swashbuckling tale of bandits and biscuits the whole family will enjoy! The Highway Rat marks the fifth adaptation by Magic Light Pictures of a Donaldson/Scheffler title. The most recent, Stick Man, premiered on BBC One on Christmas Day 2015 to achieve record ratings of 9.3 million viewers, with an overall 41 percent audience share, the fourth highest rated programme of the day. The film also won critical praise and a raft of global industry awards.

HONDA COMES OUT ON TOP IN WHAT CAR? •

Honda has been the world's largest motorcycle manufacturer since 1959,as well as the world's largest manufacturer of internal combustion engines measured by volume, producing more than 14 million internal combustion engines each year.

Honda has won What Car? magazine’s inaugural Servicing Satisfaction Survey, with the Japanese manufacturer receiving widespread praise for the quality and value of its comprehensive road car range. New for 2017, the poll – published in the November issue of Britain’s leading consumer automotive magazine – canvassed readers for their views on key criteria, from quality of work to politeness of staff and value for money. Honda is the only manufacturer to be rated inside the top three in both categories, placing second in ‘Best franchised dealers, 0-3 years’ – to reflect a typical new car warranty period – and third in ‘Best franchised dealers, 4-20 years’, indicative of how dealers perform as a car ages. Honda’s strong scores across the board earned the brand top honours in the overall ‘Best franchised dealers, 0-20 years’ rankings. “What Car? is an esteemed publication, and to be the only manufacturer to score so highly in all three age categories is testament to our unstinting commitment to offer the very best in customer service,” said David Hodgetts, Managing Director of Honda UK. “It is immensely satisfying to be recognised in this area. “At Honda, we pride ourselves on the quality of our products and our attention-todetail, the value for money we offer and our ethos that the client relationship begins the moment consumers set foot in one of our showrooms. For us, every single customer is unique and that is why we create bespoke sales experiences from beginning to end.” "Most people get their cars serviced at a franchised dealer during the warranty period, making the experience you can expect an important consideration when buying a new car,” added What Car? editor Steve Huntingford. “The What Car? Servicing Satisfaction Survey shows that Honda dealers score well in every area – and while the level of satisfaction with many brands plummets as cars age, Honda owners can expect attentive behaviour from staff and a high standard of workmanship throughout their cars' lives."

Fleetwood’s Late Flourish

Tommy Fleetwood was proud of the way he battled back from a poor start to the Italian Open as he extended his lead at the top of the Race to Dubai standings to over a million points. With extra points on offer at Monza in the fifth of the eight Rolex Series events this season, Fleetwood faced a tough task just to make the cut after opening with a disappointing 71 in the company of Sergio Garcia and Jon Rahm - his two main threats in the race to be European No 1. But the Englishman fought back with rounds of 66 and 63, and a flawless finalround 67 earned him a tie for sixth place on 17 under par - two clear of Rahm and five strokes ahead of Garcia. Fleetwood now has a commanding lead with just five events remaining this season, although the Spanish duo will have high hopes of reducing the deficit on

Benidorm Success

Local mother and daughter swimmers Vicki and Zoe Connolly from Club Natación Elche, had a rewarding end to the year’s open water swimming season, by producing two great swims at Sunday’s World Oceanman championships in Benidorm. Over a thousand competitors took part in three race distances around the rock, with Mal Pas beach used as the base for the action. Zoe and Vicki qualified for this year’s competition after

success in the Oceanman five-kilometre Isla Tabarca event back in May. Zoe came first on Sunday to become the Junior World Half Oceanman female champion for the second year running. And, she was also the second overall best female across all age categories in the 5.5 km race. Her mum Vicki was placed third in the 50-59 years category in the same race and finished as 16th best overall.

home soil at the Andalucia Valderrama Masters which started yesterday, in which Garcia is tournament host. Fleetwood is looking forward to the challenge of trying to hold off Garcia and Rahm to be crowned European No 1 for the first time, no matter how his rivals perform in Spain this weekend. "It's a strange scenario where you've got to stay away from looking at what Sergio is doing or what Jon is doing or whoever wins this tournament, maybe they get close," he said. "You have to just keep your eye on what you're doing. I think it's challenging mentally to make sure that you keep going, there's no doubt about it. It's a massive dream of mine to win the Race to Dubai and it always will be, whether it happens this year or not.

Mar Menor Games

A beach rugby tournament at Santiago de la Ribera’s Playa Barneuvo featuring junior and women’s teams (including the San Javier Squalos) from all over the Murcia region was just one of the highlights of the second Mar Menor Games that

were staged last weekend. Over three hundred people of various age groups participated in over 30 different sports held in different outdoor and indoor venues across the area, which also included a half-marathon in San Javier.

Volvo Victory

Xabi Fernàndez’s MAPFRE boat was a popular local victor when they won the first In-Port Race of the 2017-18 Volvo Ocean Race in Alicante on Saturday. Fernàndez and his team made a bold call at the start to duck behind the entire fleet in order to sail up what turned out to be the favoured right-hand side of the course, coming from behind to earn a narrow lead at the first gate. “It was pretty clear from Joan (Vila) and Rob (Greenhalgh) that we wanted to hit the right side of the course in the first upwind looking for more breeze,” explained Fernàndez.

“Our intention was to start on port but Pablo (Arrarte) saw the gap himself when Brunel did a poor tack and they couldn’t accelerate so we went for the cross and we had plenty of room. Once we hit the right everything went well.” MAPFRE then managed to stretch out to a lead of nearly one minute at the bottom gate, giving them a lead they would enjoy the rest of the way. It was an enjoyable taster for the first leg of the Volvo Ocean Race, which is due to start this Sunday and which will extend over approximately 700 nautical miles from Alicante through to Lisbon in Portugal.

Early Strike Counts

All-Square Thader

CD THADER 2 CD HERCULES 2 CD TORREVIEJA 1 BENFERRI CF 0 A ninth-minute goal from Manu Amores (pictured above making his move) gave Torrevieja a win against the third struggling side they have met in their last three matches, having been held to two disappointing draws in their last two outings. The three points for Torry mean that they go onto 15 points with Hercules B at the

top of the Preferente Group Four, after they drew at Thader (see right column). The Manu Amores strike was set up by an excellent ball from Ramiro, with the winger then dinking his way past Benferri defenders to beat keeper Roberto. Benferri belied their lowly position in the table, and had ex-Torry player Dani Meseguer in the ranks, who

could have scored early on to inflict misery on his former club. Benferri gave as good as they got, with both sides producing opportunities in an exciting second half that just lacked goals, as both keepers Roberto and Buyo were kept busy. Torry now travel to play seventh-placed Pinoso this Saturday at 5.30 pm.

All the goals came in the first half hour of this clash at Rojales last weekend, with Hercules on top of the table, and well known to Thader from their meetings last season in the Preferente. On the back of a good draw at Jove Espanol, Thader were involved in an excellent match against their Alicante-based opponents, with the only surprise being

that only four goals were scored. Rafa put the table toppers in front after just two minutes, but Dani Lucas put Thader back on level terms five minutes later. The home crowd had plenty to cheer about when Rubén Sanz put Thader in front in the 33rd minute, only for Hercules to quickly respond through David Ibarra.

A thrilling first-half led to an equally intense second period, but no further goals came, though Thader had a good late shout for a penalty turned down by the referee. They lie 14th in the Preferente with just six points, but the quality of their play is getting better all the time, and they have a Sunday lunchtime clash at Elda to look forward to.

Paying The Penalty

CF RAFAL 2 CD MONTESINOS 2

Early Almoradi Double

CALPE CF 1 CD ALMORADI 2 After a poor start to their Preferente campaign, Almoradi are beginning to get their act together, and they backed up their seven goal thrashing of Petrelense with an away at Calpe that lifts them to fifth in the table, just three points behind leaders Hercules and Torrevieja. Calpe were caught asleep as Almoradi went two-nil up

within 11 minutes with goals from Benja and Saúl, and thoughts of the Petrelense slaughter came straight to mind. The home side woke up and got a grip on things though, and Osorio pulled a goal back in the 35th minute. The second half was a more physical affair and Calpe dominated so much that only subsitute Semi (on

for the injured Benja towards the end of the first half) produced the one Almoradi strike of danger that was well saved by Calpe keeper De Jesús. Almoradi return to home action this Sunday morning as Villajoyosa, just above them in the division, are the opponents. Kick off for this match is at 11.30 am.

A 92nd penalty miss from German, who has missed two spot kicks already this season, deprived CD Montesinos a second successive win in Valencia Primera Regional Group Eight , after largely dominating this match at close neighbours Rafal. The home side started well but Monte came more into the match, and in the 20th minute, following a long ball into the Rafal half, a Manu Sanchez shot was parried by the keeper into the waiting chest of Carlos Ventura, who knocked the ball in to give Montesinos the lead.

Monte dominated, but were hit twice within a few minutes as in the 35th minute against the run of play, Rafal were given a dubious penalty to level up the scores, and then took the lead before the interval. The visitors continued to have better chances and more of the play in the second half, but it wasn’t until the 79th minute that an excellent solo goal from Carlos Ventura levelled up the score. It was end to end stuff towards the end and when Vaz was brought down in the penalty area in added time, German flunked the

resultant penalty, and the referee, who was the worst seen in the division so far this season, called time on the clash. One of the gripes from the Monte fans was the treatment handed out to Vaz, with the match official seemingly needing an urgent appointment at an eye clinic. Montesinos entertain the runaway leaders UD Horadada this Sunday, with the visitors winning all five of their matches this season, and are yet to concede a goal. The match kicks-off at the Montesinos municipal ground at 5.00 pm.

Spurs Hold Real

REAL MADRID 1 TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 1

BARCELONA 3 OLYMPIAKOS 1 Lionel Messi scored his 100th European goal as Barcelona made light of Gerard Pique's red card to brush aside Olympiakos in the Champions League on Wednesday. The Argentine, 30, whipped a free-kick through goalkeeper Silvio Proto's gloves to score the hosts' second after Dimitris Nikolaou's own-goal opener. Messi then set up Lucas Digne for a third before Nikolaou's fine header grabbed a last-minute consolation. Pique had been shown a second yellow for a handball just before the break. The central defender instinctively bundled the ball into the Olympiakos goal with his forearm when Gerard Deulofeu's shot was parried into his path five yards out.

Hard Fought Point

Tottenham made the 12-time European champions fight back for a draw at the Bernabeu in the Champions Legaue on Tuesday. The Premier League side led when Kane's clever run forced Real defender Raphael Varane to divert Serge Aurier's right-wing cross into his own net. The La Liga champions equalised before half-time when Aurier's rash challenge on Toni Kroos was punished with a penalty, which Cristiano Ronaldo drilled in to extend his tally as the leading scorer in Champions League history. The result moved Tottenham ahead of Real at the top of Group H at the halfway stage, having now scored more away goals than their opponents who also have seven points.

First-Time Losers

UE LLAGOSTERA 2 ELCHE 1 The Ilicitanos suffered their first defeat of the season as lowly Llagostera came from behind to get the three points, with coach Vicente Mir blaming poor Elche defending for both goals. Last weekend’s result meant Elche dropped to third in the Segunda Division B table, and are seven points behind leaders Mallorca. It started so well for the visitors as Sory Kaba scored in the first minute, and Elche dominated the first half, with good chances from Golobart and Provencio being well saved by home keeper Marcos. Llagostera hit back shortly after the interval as Elche’s defenders fell asleep with Moha putting back on level terms, and then Gabarré getting what was the winner with nine minutes remaining. Elche coach Vicente Mir said that his side were much the better team in the first half, but after Llagostera got the leveller, the match could have been won by either side, adding that the Ilicitanos looked vulnerable from setpieces and defensively. “There are a lot of matches left,” said Mir. “It hurts to lose, but I’m still happy with the efforts of my players.” Elche entertain midtable Alcoyano tomorrow with a 6.00 pm kick-off.

Ronaldo’s Late Show

Third Division News GETAFE 1 REAL MADRID 2

ATLETICO MADRID 1 BARCELONA 1 Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde said his side put on a "great show" in their clash at Atletico Madrid last Saturday. Luis Suarez's late header earned a point for the unbeaten Catalans, whose one hundred percent record ended, after Saul Niguez (pictured below) had put Atletico ahead in the capital. "It was a good dinner for everyone, because there was a great show," Valverde said in his post-match press conference. "I said that we were going to adapt and we did adapt. I have a positive feeling from the game. "We must value a point against a great rival who had taken the lead, Atletico normally manage their lead very well." Barcelona now entertain bottom club Malaga tomorrow evening with the Costa del Sol side just have one paltry point to their name.

Cristiano Ronaldo's first La Liga goal of the season five minutes from time handed Real Madrid a win over Getafe in Zinedine Zidane's 100th game in charge of the club last Saturday. Karim Benzema had put Real Madrid ahead in the first half with a well-taken finish before Getafe drew level after half-time when Nacho inadvertently diverted a cross into his own goal under pressure from Jorge Molina. With time running out, Ronaldo somehow missed an open goal from just a couple of yards out, before making amends on 85 minutes by firing substitute Isco's pass into the bottom corner. The result meant that Real Madrid have moved to within five points of Barcelona, who drew at Atletico (see left column). Real’s next match is at home to Eibar this Sunday, with the northern side having had a disappointing start to their campaign, as they lie fifth-bottom in the table.

Goals from Antonio (38 mins) and Iván (53 mins) saw Orihuela (action above) roll over Alzira last Sunday, after Orihuela had lost the previous weekend at La Nucia. They lie third in the table, three points behind leaders Levante, and have a Sunday trip (11.30 am kick-off) to Elche Ilicitano, who themselves lost their last fixture at La Nucia, twoone. Crevillente drew two-two at Olimpic (pictured below in their away red kit), and are now at home to Novelda this Sunday, who have had a mediocre start to the season.

Marcelo’s Woe

Real Madrid star Marcelo has been accused by authorities of tax fraud totalling almost half a million euro. The alleged irregularities are linked to the use of foreign firms to handle the earnings of his image rights, Madrid's public prosecutor says. The 29-year-old Brazilian player has yet to comment. He is the latest in a string of footballers to be pursued by the tax authorities. In the complaint, the public prosecutor said the defender, who joined Real Madrid in 2007, had used the tax structure seeking an "illegal fiscal benefit". The case dates back to 2013.

Italian Andrea Dovizioso snatched a dramatic lastgasp win at Sunday’s Japanese MotoGP in Motegi to cut Marc Marquez's championship lead to 11 points. With rain falling on a saturated track, Ducati rider Dovizioso and Honda's Marquez battled on the final lap. Dovizioso pulled away on the final straight to win by 0.249 seconds for his fifth victory of the season. There are three races remaining in the series, the next of which is at Philip Island, Australia this weekend. Dovizioso made a blistering start from ninth on the grid as he and Spaniard Marquez reeled in the early leader, Italian Ducati rider Danilo Petrucci. Dovizioso twice roared past Marquez and twice the Spaniard defiantly recaptured the lead with some audacious overtaking, the triple world champion entering the penultimate lap ahead. But Dovizioso wrestled the advantage once more, and though Marquez almost went ahead again on the final bend, the Italian's extra speed on the final drag proved decisive. "I knew the Ducati was faster on the back straight, even in the braking point," Marquez said. "At this circuit I knew he would be very, very strong." Petrucci finished third, ahead of Suzuki riders Andrea Iannone and Alex Rins, with former champion Jorge Lorenzo's Ducati sixth and Aleix Espargaro seventh on his Aprilia. Italian seven-time champion Valentino Rossi, continuing his return from a double leg fracture, spun his Yamaha into the gravel early in the race. Dovizioso emphasised the fact that, even if he falls short of beating Marquez to the crown, he will still be judged to have had an excellent season, with Motegi being his fifth victory of the year. "To fight for the championship we will have to be fast in all the remaining races," said Dovizioso. "This is the real challenge, not so much the fighting and the strategy in the races.” "I do not think we are the favourites, but I must say that we are working in a very relaxed way, because we are in a strange situation.” "If we win the championship, it's something unreal, and if we don't win it, until we now we've done a great championship.” Dovizioso admitted that Marquez will be tough to beat this weekend at Phillip Island, a track where the Spaniard traditionally excels, but remains optimistic of a strong showing in Australia. "For sure it will be a bit different (at Phillip Island)," he said. "It's one of Marc's favourite tracks. It will be difficult, because in the long left-handed corners Marc is always able to make a difference. It's his speciality and not ours.” "But last year we did a good race (finishing fourth, less than 10 seconds behind winner Cal Crutchlow), and this year we are more competitive."

Torrevieja Cricket Club entertained Rainham last weekend and lost by 20 runs in an enjoyable encounter, with the Essex side promising to make another visit next year. Both teams had an extra player each so it became a 12-aside counter, with the tourists reached 154 for 10 in their innings. After losing the first wicket in the second over, Tony Stouchberry and Steve Crotch slowly pushed the score along. As the runs crept up , so did the number of wickets and with only four people reaching double figures it was extras that top scored with 14 byes and 25 wides. It was only excellent catching (five in all) that kept Rainham to a chaseable score with the pick of the bowlers being Ciaran Wood with his six over spell producing 2 for 10 and on loan from Sporting Alfas, Adam Algar’s impressive six overs had a return of 3 for 19, had not been for him conceding 13 extras. Torrevieja’s reply saw Rahul Maini, Robin Singh, Adam Algar, and Kieran Wood all reaching double figures, only to get out before making a telling contribution. It was left to Paul Harvey to score a very good 42 but once he had went there was very little resistance, as the home side were dismissed for 134, with four players being bowled first ball. La Liga has delayed putting out to tender their international television rights amid uncertainty over what the Catalunya could mean for Barcelona, La Liga president Javier Tebas said on Tuesday. It is unclear what would happen to Barcelona and other Catalan clubs if the north-eastern region of Spain did declare independence, and so the league's governing body have decided to delay opening up the bidding for television rights by two weeks. "We have had to delay the tender process that we often do around these dates in order to wait and see what happens in Spain," Tebas said at the World Football Summit in Madrid.

WRONG TIME

GUARDIOLA’S GOAL MACHINE Sam Allardyce appears to have ruled out taking the vacant Leicester manager’s position. “As big a club it is and as much as I would love to manage Leicester (see right for more speculation), I don't think it is time for me,” he told Talksport. The ex-England boss has been linked to the USA coaching vacancy after the side failed to qualify for next year’s World Cup finals in Russia. He kept Crystal Palace in the Premier League before resigning in the spring.

BOSS BAN

Don’t expect too many major changes to the top of the Premier League tomorrow afternoon, as the Manchester City goal-getters get ready to welcome their latest victims in the shape of Burnley, writes ALEX TRELINSKI. Just who can stop Pep Guardiola and his team? They literally are on fire and nobody in their right minds can be realising a trip to the Etihad, and that’s the way a side want their home park to be, namely a fortress. I felt sorry for Stoke City last weekend! Give Burnley their due. They’ve really surprised the pundits with what they’ve done under Sean Dyche, but that’s a double-edged sword for the fans, as Dyche is being targetted by Leicester City, who terminated their contract with Craig (I didn’t stab Claudio Ranieri in the back) Shakespeare on Monday. Huddersfield are getting a bit of a reality check after hitting the Premier League ground running early doors, and now they welcome second-placed Manchester United, with Mourinho’s men involved in last weekend’s bore draw at Liverpool, and then getting that Benfica Champions League

win on Wednesday. That particular pairing certainly brought back those European Cup final memories form 1968! Another surprise package comes in the shape of fourthplaced Watford entertaining Chelsea in the Saturday earlykick off, with the Premier League champs form all over the place at the moment. Third-placed Spurs must be feeling good after that Real Madrid draw (see page 46), and they don’t play until Sunday as Liverpool come to Wembley stadium, after Spurs actually won a league match there last weekend. At the bottom, can Crystal Palace build on that great win (first goals, first points) over Chelsea last Saturday? It’s Newcastle for them tomorrow, with the local fans at last getting their wish that owner Mike Ashley has decided to sell the club. Second-bottom Bournemouth will not be relishing a trip to Stoke City, who having had the audacity to try to give Manchester City a contest last Saturday (and then getting thrashed), might well be in the mood to unload on Eddie Howe’s boys.

THEY THINK IT’S ALL OVER…… Northern Ireland football manager Michael O'Neill has pleaded guilty at Edinburgh Sheriff Court to drink-driving. The court heard he was caught by police in the early hours of September 10th at three times the drink-drive limit. He had been stopped while driving on the outskirts of the city. Sheriff Thomas Welsh QC fined O'Neill £1,300 and banned him from driving for 16 months. O'Neill was breathalysed and he was found to have a breath alcohol level of 65mcg compared to the legal limit of 22mcg.

The 2017 F1 Drivers’ championship could be done and dusted this Sunday at the US Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, if Britain’s Lewis Hamilton wins and rival Sebastian Vettel has a poor race. It could mean that Hamilton wraps it all up with three races still to go, something that looked unlikely a couple of months ago. It's a long shot as Hamilton needs to score 16 more points than Sebastian Vettel to do it - but the way things have been going for Ferrari in recent races, it cannot be ruled out. Vettel and Ferrari's season has collapsed in spectacular fashion over the three Asian races in Singapore, Malaysia and Japan, and the team and driver have only themselves to blame.

The German triggered the start-line crash that took out himself, team-mate Kimi Raikkonen and Red Bull's Max Verstappen at the start in Singapore, and then Ferrari's reliability went south in Malaysia and Japan. The good news for Vettel is that if he can just get through this weekend and stay in the game, the next race in Mexico could give him a chance to keep things alive for even longer. The bad news for him is that, unlike Mexico City, the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, is not a track Mercedes especially fear. They don't expect to dominate, but they feel they should at least be competitive - although if the weather remains as forecast at around 30C ambient, that might change.
