ARRESTING FIGURES

licante Province is the number one region in the world for British arrests since 2015. Spain is also the world leader for foreign British arrests, making it the "Costa del Crime" for some expat law breakers or those on the run from UK justice. Figures released by the British Foreign Office showed that 655 British nationals were arrested or detained in Alicante Province between 2015 and this summer, making the region the number one specific location in the world for British arrests. In total, some 2,590 people from Britain were held in Spain over the last two-anda-half years – more than in any other country, according to the FCO data.

The United States was the second most prolific, with 2,045 arrests recorded, whilst in terms of specific areas, after Alicante Province, Dubai was the destination with the next greatest number of Britons detained at 524, with

Malaga Province on the Costa del Sol fifth at 441. The figures don't offer any analysis, as to how many arrests included fugitives, as opposed to British expats getting into hot water. With both the Costa Blanca and the Costa del Sol having

one of the highest concentrations of British citizens living abroad, there is some inevitability that more expats will figure in local crime statistics, as opposed to other countries where there are fewer resident British citizens.

RESTRICTED WHEELIES

R

yanair passengers will have to shell out for priority boarding from November 1st if they want to carry a wheelie bag on board, as the air-

line attempts to reduce boarding and flight delays caused by a shortage of overhead cabin space. A new policy being introduced by the budget airline

will force people to put bags larger than 35cm x 20cm x 20cm in the hold – unless they cough up for priority boarding. Priority boarders will still be able to carry on two bags, but all other passengers will be allowed to take only one smaller bag on board the aircraft. A second, larger, wheelie bag will have to be placed in the hold free of charge at the boarding gate, to be collected at baggage reclaim on arrival. The budget carrier, who fly out of Alicante-Elche and San Javier airports, is also lowering checked bag fees and increasing the weight

allowance to encourage more customers to check in luggage. From November 1st, the minimum check-in bag allowance will increase from 15kg to 20kg, while the fee for luggage in the hold will be reduced by a third. Kenny Jacobs, the airline’s chief marketing officer, said the changes to its baggage policy still mean passengers will be able to travel with two bags for free, but under the current rules too many passengers were taking two bags on board busy flights, resulting in insufficient overhead space and causing delays.

A 35-year-old Guardamar man was arrested last Friday by the Guardia Civil for leaving his five-year-old daughter alone at home whilst he went for a night out at a karaoke bar. A neighbour called the Guardia Civil at around 3.30 am after hearing the girl screaming and sobbing. Officers climbed the fence onto the terrace of a Guardamar property, and the child ran to them and gave them a hug. The Guardia inspected

the house to see whether anything untoward had happened to the girl's father, with whom she lives alone, but they did not see any sign of him or his car near or in the building. A search led to his car being located outside a bar where a karaoke was being held. The Spaniard was arrested, and put in front of a judge on abandonment charges, but was released on bail, as the court did not want to add further to her distress.

where he is there of his own free will and not under police custody. The incident happened at around 10.00 am when the man, described as stocky, approached an East European woman that was pushing her granddaughter in a buggy. He grabbed the toddler and ran away with her in his arms. Two women witnessed what happened and chased him to outside a tourist office (pictured), with one of them starting a struggle with him, whilst the other female managed to get the

child off him. The snatcher then fled, but the shouts of the on-lookers alerted an off-duty Torrevieja local police officer, who started to chase the man, and caught him outside an ice cream parlour. The officer pushed him to the ground and restrained him, with the Guardia Civil arriving to take the man into custody. The child was unharmed during the ordeal, whilst the grandmother was treated for shock by a medical team, but not require further treatment.

A Spaniard aged in his sixties snatched a twoyear-old girl on the boardwalk of Torrevieja's Playa del Cura beach on Saturday, and was eventually pinned to the ground by an off-duty local police officer. The Informacion newspaper reported that he told officers that he was "helping the child", and has got a history of psychiatric illness. He was bailed by a Torrevieja judge on Monday, and placed into the care of the psychiatric unit of Torrevieja Hospital

Local police chiefs and mayors from across the Vega Baja region met in Bigastro last week to discuss what security improvements need to made locally in the wake of the recent terror attacks in Catalunya. Bigastro mayor Teresa Belmonte said that the key point of the meeting was to make sure that neighbouring

forces and municipalities cooperated more in exchanging information. José Miguel Saval, deputy Valencian government subdelegate for Alicante Province, encouraged everybody in the area not to hesitate to call the local police if they spotted something suspicious in their locality.

The number of foreign tourists coming to Spain continues to rise according to July's figures published by the National Statistics Institute. There was a recordbreaking number of 10.5 million arrivals, a rise of just over 10 percent over a year. The first seven months of 2017 has seen an overall 11.3 percent increase, with 46.9 million foreign visitors, as the British continuing to dominate. Visitors from the UK accounted for over 22 percent of the cumulative total for the year, with two point three million coming to Spain in July, a hike of seven percent on the previous year, suggesting that

fears over Brexit and a poor exchange are doing little to dampen their enthusiasm for coming over. The Valencia region, including Alicante Province, saw one point two million international visitors in July, which is a big 17 percent increase over 12 months, with over 40 percent coming

from Britain. The yearly rise in the Murcia region was even more spectacular, with a record 127 thousand tourists coming in July, a big rise of nearly 36 percent, British visitors made up 43 percent of the figures, which are climbing at three times the rate for the rest of mainland Spain.

Assaulters Charged

Two Spaniards and an Ecuadorian have been arrested by the Guardia Civil, some sixteen months after a British expat was beaten, tied up and raped during an attempted robbery in the Murcia region. As previously reported in The Courier, the 52-yearold woman, from Hampshire, was dragged from a swimming pool area at a property in the village of Gea y Truyols on Friday May 20th of last year. The three hooded men – one of them a minor aged just 17 – then forced their

way in to the home she was sharing with her sister and took her from room to room, beating her as they demanded money and jewellery. They then tied her up and sexually assaulted her. The ordeal only ended because the woman's sister arrived and surprised them, leading them to flee as they stole her car as well driving away in their other vehicle. The sister's vehicle was discovered on the road to Sucina, and was taken away for examination by the Guardia. The trio face charges of

robbery with violence and intimidation and sexual aggression, whilst two of the accused were already in custody for other alleged crimes. The 18-year-old has been released on provisional liberty after depositing bail money to an investigating judge’s court, and has been classified as a minor because the assault happened when he still aged 17 years. The victim who had been living in the area with her sister, decided to leave Spain after the ordeal.

Drunk And Drugged

A 17-year-old teenager was killed in Santa Pola in the early hours of Sunday morning when he was knocked over by a speeding car on Avenida Santiago Bernabéu (pictured). The teenager and a 15year-old boy were hit at around 4.30 am, with the

vehicle driven by a young driver, who then proceeded to collide with another 17year-old male teenager by the access steps to the beach. The motorist escaped on foot, but he was caught by the local police, and was found to be over the drink-drive limit as well

having taken drugs.. The incidents happened during the first weekend of Santa Pola's Moors and Christians festival, with events being postponed and rejigged as a mark of respect, as well flags flying at half-mast at municipal buildings for three days

River Of Rubbish

The End Of Worries?

The Rojales mayor, Antonio Pérez, and a local lobby group have slammed the lack of action to stop waste flowing down the river Segura in the wake of last week's heavy rain. Pérez says that white foam and floating debris have caused

concern and has asked the Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura (CHS) for an explanation, especially into what the foam is, and whether it is dangerous. Meanwhile the Platform in Defence of the Farmland has criticised the CHS for

doing nothing about the thousands of plastic bottles that build up in the Segura, where it flows into Rojales from Benijófar in the vicinity of the commercial area. The Platform claims this is a regular problem on the back of heavy downpours.

A Choice Of Two British pensioners who have retired to Spain and other EU countries will continue to have their healthcare paid for by the National Health Service post-Brexit in a reciprocal arrangement, after a deal in principle was agreed by negotiators in Brussels last week. Any rubber-stamping though of this aspect of the fraught Brexit negotiations would come as part of a complete package once the talking is concluded, and it

would have to be approved by all of the EU member nations. In one of the few advances made in discussions about EU citizens’ future rights last week, the UK Brexit secretary, David Davis, said there had been agreement on four key areas, including reciprocal healthcare for British and EU retirees affected by Brexit. “This is good news for British pensioners in the EU,” he said.

The agreement would also allow a British pensioner who has retired in Spain to travel to other EU countries on holidays and to use the existing European Health Insurance Card should they need medical attention. It is understood the UK was pushing for this EHIC agreement to cover British tourists as well, but the EU said it was not an issue to be discussed in a deal for EU citizens.

Just two bidders are left in the contest to run Murcia’s much-delayed Corvera International Airport, with it down to two-horse race between Spain’s main operator AENA and French company Edeis, who already run the facility at Castellon in the north of the Valencia region. Murcia’s regional government says that a third bidder, Corporación América., which is owned by Argentinian billionaire Eduardo Eurnekian, has failed to meet meet the appropriate standards. The next stage will see AENA and Edeis present further details of their plans

over the next two months. AENA currently run the existing facility at San Javier, and no timescale has

been given as to when the Corvera francise will be awarded or when the empty facility will finally open.

Flight Fist Fight A fight broke out on board an Alicante-Elche airportbound Ryanair flight from Newcastle last week, involving, 42-year-old Nicola Artley from Middlesborough, who then proceeded to be involved in a second brawl at the airport's luggage reclaim area, despite the impression being given that the Guardia Civil intended to detain her on landing. Witnesses speaking to the UK media said she had been seen by officers on landing and waved through, with Artley then involved in a second fight. She told the Middlesbrough Gazette that she wasn't abusive until claiming that she was attacked first. The first incident flared up as the plane was coming in to land last Thursday afternoon. A witness, Lucy Norris, of Blyth, Northumberland, told The Mirror newspaper:-"It was just as we were about to land when the woman(Artley) started kicking off." "She was shouting, screaming and making a show of herself. She had been rude to a few people on the flight and I think she was drunk". Footage recorded by Lucy showed a man arguing with Artley before another woman, who was next to him in a blue shirt, appeared to throw a punch at her. “I’m on a lot of medication. I’m on antidepressants, diazepam for my back and sleeping tablets which I’m

prescribed", Nicola Artley told the Gazette. “I had been awake since 5am. I had had a drink, but all I’d had was two pints and two shots of vodka. “I was probably being loud and I did get into an argument, but it wasn’t me who was violent first.” Nicola claimed that another passenger had thrown a drink over her and hit her - and insisted the viral videos merely capture her reaction. She said: “I was getting attacked.” When Artley left the plane, she was allowed to walk through to baggage reclaim where she she was involved with another fight, this time with another woman. Mobile phone video footage of the fight shows a woman in a green dress straddling Artley, who is then

heard screaming with her legs flailing in the air as the other woman pins her down on the floor. The brawl got so out of control that the two women eventually had to be prised apart by a bystander. Rachel Burns, 35, who had been on the same flight told the Daily Mail that Artley was 'intoxicated'. "It was unbelievable. At the airport the police had already seen her and let her go. When we got into the baggage collection area that's when the violence started." "I was with my family, we'd got our bags and had been walking away and then they got stuck into it. I saw her just go up to a lady who had been one of the people telling her to sit down. Then they were going at it on the floor." “People need to know I didn’t get arrested, the police escorted me to a taxi", Nicola Artley responded. “I’ve never been in trouble with the police over there or over here about this incident. People have it all wrong. I’ve had to come home early. “If you watch all the videos, people are screaming and shouting at me. It was like a mob. People were cheering as I was attacked in the airport." “People have been threatening my family on Facebook . Some have said they were going to publish my address.” Robin Kiely, head of communications for Ryanair said:- "This passenger has been banned from flying with Ryanair and this is now a matter for local police”. “This is exactly why we are calling for significant changes to prohibit the sale of alcohol at airports, such as a two-drink limit per passenger and no alcohol sales before 10.00 am.” “It's incumbent on the airports to introduce these preventative measures to curb excessive drinking and the problems it creates, rather than allowing passengers to drink to excess before their flights.”

Beyond Belief

An eight-year-old boy, named as Dominique, was killed and the pregnant partner of his foster father was raped in a shocking attack at their home in the centre of Elda in Alicante Province last week. Two masked men apparently surprised the boy and woman on the stairwell of their apartment block, with neighbours hearing some

loud cries around 9.00 pm. Emergency services were called and the woman, named as Alejandra, was found bound and gagged on her apartment floor after being assaulted, whilst the body of the child was also on the floor. The autopsy revealed that he had been suffocated, and both victims had

been sexually abused. The National Police said that nothing had been stolen from the apartment and the door had not been forced. The partner’s girlfriend had to be taken to hospital in Elda with severe shock. Investigators have so far drawn a blank as to what the motivations for the attack was.

Illegal Parking Around a hundred cars a day are flouting no parking notices on a car park that is in danger of sinking in the La Mata area of Torrevieja, according to a report in the Informacion newspaper. The area is above the Canal de La Mata, where the weekly market is held and Torrevieja council has been talking to stall-holders over the last few months about moving to a new site because of the dangers of subsidence. Informacion says that the local police have not imposed any parking fines, with markets councillor Javier Manzanares telling the paper that the high summer season with the influx of tourists and a shortage of police officers

has meant that they cannot cover all of the Torrevieja area all of the time. Manzanares also stated that he hopes to make an announcement soon on a new location for the market

which is expected to be in the Avenida de los Europeos area. Traders have expressed their disquiet about some of the site suggestions being put forward by the authority.

Airport Spending

Alicante-Elche airport is to see an update of security systems for its perimeter fencing as well as the construction of four new walkways for passengers

boarding and leaving aircraft. The investment package has been announced by the airport operator AENA who have

advertised tenders worth two million euro for the various projects. Two new toilet areas are also to be built at the terminal.

Donald's Guest

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy is to jet off to America later this month for talks with US President Donald Trump at the White House. The two leaders have already met at a G20 summit in Hamburg, Germany and a NATO summit in Brussels, but this will be

their first scheduled headto-head talks on Tuesday September 26th. The first phone conversation between the two leaders was in February when Trump assured Rajoy that the United States remains committed to NATO, despite his past criticism of the transatlantic military

alliance. Trump and Rajoy then agreed "to continue close security, economic and counter-terrorism cooperation". Rajoy visited the White House in January 2014 when Trump's predecessor Barack Obama was in office, with Obama coming to Spain last year

Happy Ending It all turned out fine for the family of a British girl who went missing last week after a night out at a Costa Blanca restaurant, with Guardia Civil officers finding the eight-year-old, who is called Scarlett, watching television in a room at a next door bar. Scarlett's mother reported her missing at 2.00 am after an hour of searching following her disappearance from the restaurant in Albir where she had been dining with her family. Six hours later Guardia Civil officers spotted that the television in an adjoining bar had been left switched on, even though it was closed and locked up. Inside, they found Scarlett watching it, unharmed and

perfectly calm, after calling the bar owner to open it up. It turned out she had slipped away from the table where she and her family were eating and gone off to explore, wandering into the next door premises. Whilst there, and unseen by staff, she had fallen

asleep, and not woken up until daylight, when decided to switch on the television. It was not made clear whether Scarlett (pictured with the rescuing Guardia officers) had been on holiday with her family, or whether they were local residents.

Top Of The Parks

Visitor numbers to Spain's national parks have climbed over 77 percent since 1997, with the returns for last year showing a record 15 million people enjoying their natural

beauty. Increasing foreign visitor numbers have helped to fuel the rises, with the Teide on Tenerife featuring a dormant volcano proving to be the

most popular of the parks. The biggest mainland draw is the Sierra de Guadarrama (pictured), a mountain range to the northwest of the Madrid region.

Almagro's Pledge

Work is to be done to try and cut down on the backlog of applications for new businesses to open on the Orihuela Costa, according to the recently appointed Urbanism and Planning councillor, Rafael Almagro. Speaking to the Informacion newspaper, Almagro has admitted that dozens of requests for opening licenses had yet to be dealt with, as applications continue to come in, with a number of businesses running without proper authority in lieu of getting the paperwork somewhere down the line.

Almagro said that most of the businesses are in the leisure and hospitality sector, and that a normal process of getting a license which should take a few weeks, has been running up to six months. That would also include an inspection by Orihuela council officials. "As a result of being unlicensed, some premises are not keeping to proper opening hours or noise limits", added Almagro. He pledged that all the backlog of applications would be fully cleared up by the end of the year.

Drugs Bust Brits

A dozen British nationals have been arrested over an alleged cocaine ring operating in Maguluf on the island of Mallorca. The Guardia Civil said they had seized three kilograms of cocaine, more than 100 thousand euro in cash and four vehicles as part of Operation Tatum. Smaller amounts of MDMA tables, hashish and methamphetamine was also found. The Guardia said the

gang were distributing the drugs at popular night spot areas around Magaluf. 12 British nationals, including several women, were arrested last Thursday in the raids alongside one Spaniard and a Dominican national. The Guardia said they were assisted by agents from the UK's National Crime Agency (NCA) in helping arrest members of the alleged criminal organisation.

Row Continues

A senior Torrevieja police officer has said that his team could have provided security cover for the cycle race, La Vuelta, to come into the city centre areas of Torrevieja towards the end of last month. Operations officer Vicente Gutiérrez (pictured) said that he had supplied Torrevieja mayor José Manuel Dolón a report stating that fact over two months ago, with local police chief Óscar Cartón backing up Gutiérrez's disclosure. Cartón said that a combination of police officers, Civil Protection volunteers, and La Vuelta security teams could have covered the cycle race as went through the city.

The prestigious sporting event had to by-pass key areas of Torrevieja after the mayor claimed that he did not have enough officers to do patrol duties, along with citing security concerns in the wake of the recent terror attacks in Catalunya. "The final decision over providing cover for La Vuelta was not a police matter", added Cartón. Leading figures from Alicante Provincial Council, including vice-president and ex-Torrevieja mayor Eduardo Dolón had slammed José Manuel Dolón's decision, and his rejection of an offer for security personnel from the provincial authority.

Forward Planner A woman from northern Spain who died last week, has been buried in a coffin (pictured) she designed, bought and took home with her back in 1997. Josefa Rego, known as 'Fina de Rivera' by her friends and neighbours, passed away in Lugo in Galicia aged 99, some 20 years after buying the coffin that she kept ready in her lounge. She is even known to have had pictures of her taken lying inside it whilst still alive to see what she would look like at her funeral during the 'open coffin' session after her death. But none of this was with morbid intentions, say those who knew her – she was a 'fun person' with a 'very black sense of humour', according to José María Teixido, who owned the funeral parlour near her house. Teixido admitted when Fina first went into the shop 20 years ago, just after they had arranged her husband's funeral, asking to buy her own coffin so she could keep it in her house, they refused, thinking she was suicidal. But she 'managed to convince a local carpenter' to make one to her required specifications, and Teixido's company then sourced the material for the inside and

fitted it. Fina then contracted the firm's photography service to take pictures of her inside the coffin, to get an idea of what she would look like at her funeral, and even commissioned them to write her obituary. This was 15 years ago, when she also arranged the fleet of vehicles her loved ones would be transported in to the church of Santa Mariña in Guitiriz where she wanted the service to be held.

Her forward planning meant that last Thursday, the required obituary was published and the alreadybooked fleet and church were duly employed. Teixido said when he went to collect the coffin from inside the flat it had shared with its future occupant since 1997, a note had been placed in a prominent location with a set of keys. The keys were for Fina's niche at Guitiriz cemetery, and the note explained this and indicated where it was.

Tourists Taxed

The Balearic Islands, including Mallorca and Ibiza, are putting up tourist taxes next year, with the average doubling to three euro per person amid growing unease among local residents over the effects of mass tourism. The increases are one of several new measures taken by the regional government to cope with what is viewed as the damaging effects of mass tourism, at a time when other regions like Catalunya have also been experiencing a backlash against an influx of visitors. The islands were the second most visited region in Spain during July, after north-eastern Catalunya, as

they welcomed two point four million overseas tourists in July, according to figures from the National Institute of Statistics. That's more than double the usual population of the islands outside the peak holiday season. Last month, the Balearics introduced new legislation to crack down on illegal tourist rentals, targeting online home-sharing sites such as Airbnb, amid complaints their popularity was driving up rental costs for residents. The increased tourism taxes are expected to raise up to 120 million euro in revenues each year, which will be allocated to helping to protect the environment and helping the islands deal with

the effects a visitor influx, according to the regional government. Tourist taxes will range from one euro per day on people camping or staying in hostels to four euro for those in high-end hotels and apartments. They are to be imposed on anyone staying overnight - even those from elsewhere in Spain - or arriving on a cruise ship. “It will help us to enhance the balance between the impact of tourism on locals and the contribution made by the people who visit us,” Biel Barcelo, the region’s tourism chief, said in a statement. “It will be a tool to help us build solidarity between visitors and residents.”

Out Of Control

Nothing Doing

The new school year starts in the Valencia region this coming Monday (September 11th) but there's as yet been no indication as to when work will be done to help prevent flooding at the CEIP Infant and Junior school at Los Dolses on the Orihuela Costa. Heavy rain caused flooding to the mainly prefabricated structures last autumn and winter disrupting lessons, with the "temporary buildings" erected in 2002 susceptible to rainwater getting through. Orihuela's education councillor Begoña Cuartero said that they were still waiting on action from the Valencian government on building a median wall to reduce the flooding risks, but no start date has been declared.

Quesada Crash A woman was hospitalised last Thursday when a bus hit her after losing control and smashing into a ticket office at Torrevieja bus station. The vehicle belonging to

the Globalia company was operating on the Alicante City to Cartagena route, and for reasons unknown, did not stop at the prescribed point but drove into the ticket

outlet, knocking over the woman who standing out the building. The unnamed female victim was taken to hospital, whilst the driver was treated for shock.

Almoradi firefighters rescued an 80-year-old Swiss woman who was trapped in her car, which collided with a van in Quesada. The incident happened on Monday lunchtime on Calle Onda, with the female driver suffering some pain, and she was transferred to hospital. No explanation was given by authorities for what caused the accident.

UNFREEZE YOUR LOST PENSIONS

RICHARD SAMUELS, INTERNATIONAL FINANCIAL ADVISER, BLACKTOWER FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT The term “frozen pension” can be misleading. This is namely because a frozen pension can be defined in multiple ways.

EQUIVALENT transfer value in order to secure your pension pot. Some of these schemes are looking to reduce their liabilities, and thereby offering enhanced transfer values to get members off their books. In some cases, they could be more than 20 times the value of the annual pension offered on retirement.

For example, a state pension received by a UK expatriate who has retired overseas is frozen on the very day he or she lands in the new country of residence if that country is outside of the EEA. It will not increase with inflation as it would have had the pensioner remained in the UK or EEA. This is true in the case of people who have emigrated to Australia, New Zealand or Canada for example.

You don't have to decide straight away – you can generally transfer at any time up a year before the date that you are expected to start drawing retirement benefits. In some cases, it's also possible to transfer to a new pension provider after you have started to draw retirement benefits.

Another way of defining a frozen pension is related to a workplace pension established through a previous employer. When an individual leaves an employer to take a job with a new one, any pension that is older than two years remains intact unless the employee explicitly chooses to transfer it elsewhere. Leaving a pension behind in this way is sometimes described as a “frozen pension”, although the correct term is a “deferred pension”, as neither the employer nor the former employee continues making contributions. However, it is not frozen as the invested funds can continue to earn returns for as long as they remain invested; or in the case of “final salary schemes” they will increase annually to account for inflation. Over the last few decades, there have been many changes in the workplace including a more migratory and flexible workforce. These days it is common to move between different employers in search of better pay and conditions. However, this has caused people to lose track of their pensions causing them to become “lost”. It is not the employers’ responsibility to keep track of “deferred” members, so if you move address you should inform all your previous pension schemes. The scale of the problem is huge — £400 million is estimated to have been left in lost or forgotten pension schemes. It is also worth noting that pension schemes can continue to exist even if the original employer has gone out of business, changed name, or was bought by another company. The pension scheme is run separately from the company and quite often is administered by a pension administration or insurance

Jumping up is a common behaviour problem facing many dog owners. It's annoying to feel like you're being attacked by an excited and overly exuberant dog the minute you step through your front door. It can also be dangerous for small children. The good news is that you can train a dog to stop jumping. Withhold Attention The first part of teaching a dog not to jump involves withholding your attention. There are several ways you can do this: • As soon as your dog jumps up, turn your back on him. Cross your arms over your chest, and don't make a sound. If the dog runs around to jump again, turn the other way so your back is again to him. Wait for him to stop jumping. • Another method is to remove yourself altogether. If your dog jumps up when you walk in the door, turn around and walk back outside. If he jumps up when you're inside, walk out of the room. Wait a moment, and step back inside. Repeat this until your dog is calm. Reward Good Behaviour It helps when you're working on stopping unwanted jumping if you keep some treats close at hand. As soon as your dog is standing in front of you with all four paws on the ground, throw him a treat. Give him praise, but keep things low key. Too much excitement and attention from you may stimulate him enough to get him jump up again. Practice Makes Perfect It helps if you can set up the situation to practice with your dog. For instance, if he jumps up a lot when you first walk through the door, spend a few minutes a few times a day coming and going. Don't make a big fuss over the dog, and be sure to step back outside if he jumps up. Reward him any time all four feet are on the floor. Add a Sit Command Once your dog is able to keep all four feet on the floor for a

few seconds or more, start asking him to sit. Walk into a room or through the front door, and give the command “sit”. As soon as the dog sits, give him a treat. Practice this over several training sessions. With lots of practice, your dog will be sitting as soon as you walk through the door or enter the room. Practice with Other People It's not enough that you practice with your dog. You should also involve friends and family in this training. Otherwise your dog may learn only that it's not okay to jump up on you. Having other people help with this training will teach your dog to keep all four paws on the floor no matter who comes into the room.

Polluted Waters

A popular Los Alcázares area beach had to be closed off to bathers last Thursday and Friday after a sewage pipe damaged in the winter storms started to spew waste into the water at Playa del Espejo. A lifeguard spotted the waste matter in the sea and called authorities who then cordoned off the area. It's believed heavy rain at the start of last week amplified the problem over the pipe.

Authorities carried out analysis of the water, and deemed it safe to be reopened for swimmers on Saturday, with the green flag being raised to give the allclear. Meanwhile the Neighbourhood Association president José Merino said that a vile stench hit the area caused by the drains flooding in some streets after last week's heavy rain. He said the local drainage system was not fit for pur-

pose, as it was put in years before the mass building of properties next to the beach, and that regular complaints to the local council fell on death ears. In an incident not linked to the sea pollution, up to 30 dead fish hit the area's shore on Friday morning. Experts said that they may have got detached from fishing nets being used by local poachers, or simply discarded by licensed fishermen.

Lengthy Withdrawal

A man who went to use an ATM machine in the inside lobby of a Murcia City bank on Sunday morning got more than he bargained for, because after he withdrew

his cash, he found he couldn't get out. The incident happened at a Santander branch in the city, and the imprisoned customer dialled emergency

services on his mobile phone. After some time, firefighters and the local police eventually managing to open the door to free the man.

Downward Trend

Spain’s unemployment rate is continuing to fall, with the August figures showing an 8.5 percent reduction on 12 months earlier. Over 3.8 million people were registered as out of

work last month, which was a 46 thousand increase on July’s figures, as summer contracts started to come to an end. Some of the most significant rises were in tourist

areas like the Murcia region at 3.6 percent, and the Valencia region at 2.3 percent, though compared to August 2016, the jobless figure has dropped nationally by just over 315 thousand.

Lorry Driver Death A lorry driver, aged in his forties, died on Saturday when his vehicle overturned on a bend on the intersection between the RM-19 exit for San Javier and the A-30 Cartagena to Murcia City road. The accident happened before 10.00 am and despite firefighters able to free the man from his cab, medics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Guardia Statistics The Guardia Civil in Alicante Province have been involved in over five thousand aid and rescue operations so far this year, according to figures released by them a few days ago. There have been over eleven-hundred instances of providing first aid at incidents across the province, mainly on the roads, in addition to operations involving immigrants arriving in boats from north Africa, and a variety of sea rescue incidents. The sea rescues included a total of four bathers being pulled out of dangerous waters at Cala de la Higuera in Torrevieja in June and July.

No Laurel Sitting

Feathered Felonies Eight illegal exotic bird breeding locations and a shop in the Elche area have been raided by the Guardia Civil, with 153 birds being impounded. Some of the birds could fetch up to a thousand euros and had been falsely declared as being kept as "private zoological collections". The store and breeding area owners are being charged with 90 infractions over the illegal breeding and sale of protected species.

Despite record-breaking tourist figures featuring British visitors coming to the Costa Blanca this year, the Valencia Tourism Agency has hired a PR company to promote the region to the UK travel industry. That's because it wants to cushion the impact that Brexit and lower exchange rates may have on British visitor numbers next year.

The Informacion newspaper reports that the Mediaco company is running a campaign aimed at British travel agents, travel journalists, tour operators, as well as potential tourists to promote what the whole of the Valencia region can offer UK tourists over and above good weather and beaches. Activity breaks like cycling and walking are being

pushed along with the history of the region's towns and cities, in addition to the many festivals that take place during the year. The area's variety of dining is also being promoted, along with opportunities for business tourism. Mediaco will also support the promotion of the region during the annual World Travel Market in London

Rotten And Keeling

One of the wooden masts on the Pascual Flores schooner moored in Torrevieja has partially keeled over and sunk by a metre due to decomposition, with a crane having to be brought in by Torrevieja council to prop it up, ahead of its eventual removal

(photo from Objectivo Torrevieja). Over six million euro has been spent on the ship over the years which is regarded as a symbol to the old local tradition of shipbuilding. Earlier this year, the council said they would spend 19 thousand euro to see what repairs are need to

the schooner that was used on the classic BBC TV series The Onedin Line. Tentative suggestions for the municipality-owned vessel includes it being turned into a floating museum or to become a working ship to be used as a marine laboratory or for outreach activities.

Full House Fraud

58-year-old Spaniard from Torre Pacheco who charged up to 200 euro a time for foreigners to illegally register at the same address on the Los Alcรกzares padron has been arrested by the Guardia Civil. His ruse was rumbled after 60 foreigners, mainly from the Indian sub-continent, were all declared as living at the same farm belonging to his mother, who had died earlier in the year.

The Spaniard charged between 100 and 200 euro for his clandestine services, which were uncovered by the Guardia in Operation Simoneti, which was launched after suspicions were aroused over anomalies arising in registrations onto the Los Alcรกzares muncipal register. Officers discovered a flurry of registrations to the same address appearing in the last few months of 2016, with approximately 12 thou-

sand euro obtained by the Spaniard, who has been charged with fraud and misrepresentation. The accused man forged the signature of his mother for the padron registration documents, and contined the process even after she passed away. Obtaining a padron certificate for illegal immigrants meant that it would ease their process in obtaining social benefits and getting a residency certificate

Hi Paul, you should remove MS Security Essentials and then once removed install Panda.

Hello Richard, I hope you can help me with a problem I have got in my Junk emails on my iPad. I have 3 emails which will not let me delete them. I get a message up which says: - Unable to move Message - The message could not be moved to the mailbox Trash. They are from:- Tedswood Working, iBook’s, and Candle Caking. These do not, however, appear on my Laptop, only my iPad. Thanking you Richard. Kind Regards, Pam Hi Pam, it sounds like the automatic synchronisation of your email is having some issues, you can try disabling your email (you do this from within Settings > Mail) and then try to restart your iPad and then re-enabling your email. Sometimes this resolves the problem, in other cases it’s a matter of deleting your email account from within your iPad and re-adding it. Of course, these are both quite complex and scary things to do, by all means get in touch if you want to arrange an appointment for me to do it for you.

You Could Have This Common Skin Condition And Not Even Know It That dark patch on your cheek that you thought was a healing sunburn could actually be the sign of a common, though littleknown skin condition called melasma. Melasma causes brown or brownish-grey patches to appear on your skin ― most commonly on your face, along the forehead, cheeks, upper lip and chin. It’s caused by an overactivity of the skin’s colour-making cells, called melanocytes, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. The good news? It’s easily treatable and rarely dangerous. Melasma can range from mild to severe and affects more than five million Americans, 90 percent of whom are women. It is also more common among people with darker skin tones, including Latinos and people of African, Asian, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean descent, according to the AAD. “Many of my patients aren’t aware their discoloration is a common disorder named melasma,” Lauren Ploch, a Georgia-based dermatolo-

gist, said. “They often attribute it to a previous sunburn or oral contraceptive pills. Many people aren’t aware that it is treatable.” So what should you do if you suspect you’ve got it? What causes melasma? While it’s not entirely clear, researchers suspect sun exposure is the main cause: Ultraviolet light can put the skin’s color-producing cells into overdrive for some people, especially those with darker skin, according to the AAD. Hormonal changes from pregnancy or birth con-

trol can cause melasma to act up, too. Melasma commonly appears during pregnancy, while taking birth control, or after sun exposure. How do I know if I have it? Melasma patches can be subtle and come with no other symptoms. Dermatologists can usually diagnose it just by looking at the skin. Look for brown or brownishgray patches on your cheeks, forehead, nose bridge, above your upper lip or on your chin. Some peo-

ple get patches on their forearms or neck, per the AAD. Melasma is sometimes mistaken for more typical sun spots, or lentigos, said Jessica Krant, a dermatologist at the Laser and Skin Surgery Center of New York. “Since there are many types of brownish skin discolouration, it’s very possible people might have some areas of melasma without realising it,” she told HuffPost. Does melasma put me at risk for other disorders? No, but it may signify other potential issues. Because

melasma often appears after significant sun exposure, it could mean you’re at higher risk for skin cancer, Ploch said. Hormone changes from thyroid problems may also cause melasma, she added, so it’s smart to check with your doctor if the condition doesn’t go away. What can I do to treat it? The best thing to do is start using sunscreen ASAP. “[You] should immediately start wearing a physical sunblock daily,” Ploch said. “Melasma is easier to treat

when it’s new.” Very early melasma can clear up on its own with sunscreen, she added. If that doesn’t work, Ploch usually prescribes a compounded topical cream, then moves on to laser treatments and peels. Pregnancy-induced melasma usually clears up on its own. A dermatologist can help you plan for how treat yours. Overall, it’s important for people to recognize that melasma is an issue, and that it’s treatable, said Anand Ganesan, a melasma expert at the University of California Irvine. Some research has shown that melasma spots can make patients feel frustrated, embarrassed or depressed about their appearance, and treating it ― instead of letting it linger ― can provide an important confidence boost, he said. “There are situations where (melasma) doesn’t adversely affect some people,” Ganesan said. “However [that] shouldn’t be used to discount the fact that others have it and it affects them severely.”

Trial raises Parkinson's therapy hope Scientists have restored nerve cells destroyed by a condition similar to Parkinson's disease, in monkeys. The Japanese team hope their work could lead to stem cell trials in human patients before the end of 2018. Parkinson's disease causes the progressive loss of nerve cells that release dopamine, a chemical that helps control body movement. The researchers triggered a similar loss of cells in macaque monkeys, then used human stem cells to replace them. The animals showed significant improvement in their symptoms two years after having precursor dopamine

neurons derived from human stem cells transplanted into their brains. These cells - known as induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells - are created by genetically reprogramming ordinary adult cells, so that they revert to an embryoniclike state. In this state, they can then be coaxed to develop into many different adult cell types - in the case of this experiment, dopamine neurons. Researcher Prof Jun Takahashi, from Kyoto University, said the work, published in the journal Nature, showed that the artificially created cells were as effective as those created naturally in the brain of the

monkeys. He said: "Because iPS cells are easy to obtain, we can standardise them to only use the best iPS cells for therapy." Brain scans confirmed the cells were functioning as expected and not triggering a damaging immune response, or the growth of cancerous tumours, which can be associated with experimental stem cell therapies. The researchers also found that the quality of the donor cells was the key factor - not how many each monkey received. Dr Tilo Kunath, a Parkinson's UK-funded researcher at the Medical Research Council Centre for Regenerative Medicine at

the University of Edinburgh, said: "This is extremely promising research demonstrating that a safe and highly effective cell therapy for Parkinson's can be produced in the lab. "Such a therapy has the potential to reverse the symptoms of Parkinson's in patients by restoring their dopamine-producing neurons. "The next stage will be to test these therapies in a first-in-human clinical trial." Prof Tom Foltynie, of the National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery, said there would be concerns about how stem cell transplants might pan out in human Parkinson's patients, but the latest work had

addressed some of the previous uncertainty about whether it was safe to use iPS cells. He said "Overall, the results they report in the short term are encouraging and provide some reassurance that these cells can function as sources of dopamine to address those movement

symptoms of Parkinson's disease that relate to dopamine loss. "No-one expects that transplants will address the nondopamine, non-movement aspects of Parkinson's disease such as dementia and falls, which ultimately emerge with very long-term follow up."

Non-invasive diagnostics is the future of healthcare Medical diagnostics have advanced tremendously in the last 20 years, however judging from what is available in the public healthcare system, this may not be apparent. The art or science of modern medicine is largely based on medical diagnostics. Without the accurate diagnosis of a disease, it is unlikely that the disease will be treated. The routine investigations carried out at the primary care level such as blood tests, and X-rays are too rudimentary to provide any useful information on a person's state of health. Blood tests measure the levels of proteins, enzymes and other chemicals in the blood. These chemicals only become measurable

when diseases may have progressed. So, at the start of a disease blood tests may not indicate any changes. X-rays are reliable for identifying fractures. Otherwise, their application elsewhere is very limited. X-rays, however, should be avoided as they are known to trigger cancer. If X-rays are bad, CT scans are even worse. CT scanners are X-ray machines that take thousands of X-ray images to produce a 3-dimensional picture of the body. CT scans expose the body to extremely toxic levels of radiation and are a known cause of several cancers. MRI's are relatively safe, but due to their high opera-

tional cost, their use in public healthcare is limited. Since the 1980s, the trend with medical diagnostics has been towards noninvasive and holistic technologies capable of a full examination of the body in one session, rather than multiple visits to several

specialities. Such modern technologies read electromagnetic frequencies from the brain and other parts of the body, and the computer analysis of these frequencies can determine the state of a person's health. The process is like what happens in a garage when

the engineer uses computers to downloads data from the car to figure out the cause of a problem. Over 100 years ago, scientists established that every cell, tissue and organ in the body as well as the diseases, have unique frequencies or Identities, and these measurable frequencies change when the body becomes diseased. Most interestingly, these frequencies change long before the symptoms of diseases set in and serve as an early warning signal to the body. The best of these medical diagnostic technologies is called Sensitiv Imago. Sensitiv Imago measures and interprets frequencies from the brain and body and provides a detailed

health report of the body. The report from the scan includes information such as the possible diseases occurring, the presence of viruses, bacteria, fungi, parasites and contaminants. Also included are a detailed blood test, food allergy tests, and the impact of negative energy and food additives on the body. Sensitiv Imago is the most advanced diagnostic scan in use today in health centres. Sensitiv Imago is used for the full body diagnostic scan carried out at MedB clinic. To book a Full Body Scan Call 965071745, 966189074 or visit www.medb.es for more information

Having A Beard Is Good For Your Health Beards are considered a must for any Millennial tribe member worth his salt. While those with a more traditional view may not be fans of the bearded look, it’s fair to say this style has found its place in the realm of men’s grooming. Now, there’s even more reason (beyond style) for men to grow their beard. Research has shown that beards can protect you from up to 95% of harmful UV rays. Rearchers at The University of Queensland conducted a study on UV radiation protection provided by beards and moustaches. They found that facial hair reduced the exposure to ultraviolet

radiation to about one third when compared to those without any. Dr Adam Freidmann says: “Sun exposure is the primary cause of photo-ageing and skin damage so it makes sense that if your face is covered by a heavy beard, it may well protect your skin from the signs of ageing.” But experts have also warned that other sun safety precautions should be used. “While beards will never be as sun-safe as sunscreen, they certainly are a factor in blocking UV rays,” lead author Professor Parisi explained in the study. So, in other words gents, more is more.

COME AND JOIN US! It’s the perfect time to consider joining Find A Spanish Property as a property associate, as property prices are on the rise, and the market is blossoming. 2016 was a positive year for the real estate market with prices having bottomed out the year before with modest price rises. Things have really kicked in during 2017, in strong contrast to the recession period that kicked in during 2008 and 2009. Official government figures confirm that prices are rising this year, and outside the cities of Madrid and Barcelona, Alicante Province which features the Costa Blanca, and the Murcia region with the Costa Calida tourist area, are two of the biggest areas on mainland Spain which are seeing substantial rises in demand along with price increases. The cranes are back with new homes being built by the coast, and the re-sale market continues to rise, fuelled by low interest rates in Spain. Statistics show that demand for homes from British buyers is still high, despite pessimistic fears last year over the Brexit factor, coupled with purchasers from across Europe, and even further afield. Recent surveys show that the majority of British people living in Spain are aged 65 and over, and website statistics confirm that older British nationals with no mortgage on their UK property are still very much looking at Spain as their area of choice to buy a holiday home, or even somewhere to retire to. It’s a great time to get involved in becoming a seller of real-estate in Spain, especially since most of the cowboys disappeared thanks to the recession nearly a decade ago. We like to think that we’ve played our own small part in helping to seeing them off, by offering an honest business that people are proud to recommend and that we now want to substantially expand.

Getting Started We will remove the pain and hassle of starting up your own estate agency by setting the all-important website that will market your business. The costs are cut, and you don’t need any experience of running an agency or experience of sales. We can do that for you, but you will need to promote your website and of course to generate new opportunities.

Benidorm Pride on in Full Force

The Region of Valencia is a really, really friendly destination where entertainment is never left out. After the celebration of the Fiesta del Orgullo in June, the event of the community LGBT arrives to Benidorm. A golden closing event to the calendar of The Pride!

Benidorm Pride 2017 is already here. The most important event of the community LGBT of the year, with his terrific and colourful parade on 9th September, will gather thousands of people who will shout and celebrate that love is love. As each year, there are a huge number of events programmed from 5th to 10th September. Benidorm Pride is considered the seventh big gay escape but they aim at becoming the biggest Wow Factor Event in the Costa Blanca in the 2017, will you help them to get it? Let’s speak of the Big Parade. On Saturday 9th September, from 17.00 hours, it will visit the beach of Levante filling the streets with colour, music and emotion. The end of the route will be the stage of the Auditorium Julio Iglesias, prepared for the occasion and with free entry. Besides, there will also be free access and entry to the thematic parties in the open air in the Mirador de Castillo. In Benidorm, they expect 15 000 visitors who will find a city which never sleeps in real terms and where it is always summer. The main attraction for the attendants to the Benidorm Pride is the ancient city, where "the heart" of the gay community is. Nearly 30 bars and restaurants really gay friendly but at the same time small and intimate places, only a jump away one from the other. And when the sun is well up, everybody has to go to enjoy the beaches of golden sand in Benidorm!

TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

The television equivalent of dragging your nails down a blackboard is back, with a fantastic hour of paranoia and excruciating moments. Welcome back to Doctor Foster on BBC 1 with Suranne Jones as the GP now trying to get to grips with her ex-husband moving back to the area with his new wife. It’s been a two year wait for series two, and I’m pleased to say that Doctor Foster delivers. Fans of the show would inevitably wonder where it is going to go, and it’s gone even crazier in a good way, with Suranne Jones in top form as her character clearly has issues, especially when she pops up at her ex-hubby’s wedding party with a date in tow. You could hear a pin drop in a great moment as she appeared, and then after son quits her home to live with dad, the final scene almost reminded me of Lady Macbeth in a Shakespearean scene, as she Foster dissolved her wedding ring in nitric acid. Has she gone Looney

Foster’s Major Foibles

Tunes and Merrie Melodies, or is there another web of deception being weaved against her? It’s a neat twist where on the basis on episode one, your sympathies lay with her ex, Simon (Bertie Carvel), and her son Tom, who seems to have more sense than any of them! Social media was not terribly kind to ITV’s new Saturday night show Cannonball, which is like Total Wipeout in the water. One correspondant suggested that there would be

more fun at a Michael Barrymore pool party! Cannonball isn’t a dud, but it’s hardly something that I would be running centrestage in a primetime schedule. I enjoyed the quickfire pace of the show and the challenges, along with good production values and the use of some great pop tunes as the contestants were put to the test in Malta. Clearly, Bognor or Clacton had nothing to offer, though they would have been rather grim in April and May when

the show was taped. The big mistake is wasting host Freddie Flintoff, who barely appeared on screen for five minutes, and was confined to a post-production commentary booth back in the UK, dubbing on the scripted links, as Richard Hammond did on Total Wipeout. Freddie is good fun, as viewers to his shows on Sky would confirm, and his wit and ability to react with people is a strong card of his, which the producers did not take advantage of. Instead we

got a parade of largely unknown faces (barring exSaturdays singer Frankie Bridge) hosting the various elements, and to be fair they were not bad, but Freddie would have been better. I fear for Cannonball as Strictly returns tomorrow night to “Totally Wipe it Out”, to use a TV pun! The X Factor (ITV) was great last weekend in a double return, and loads of fun from the judges in a complete contrast to the bear-pit atmosphere from a few years ago. There were two

good changes with the singers able to sing their own songs, and a policy decision to cut down on the number of “rubbish” acts, with a pledge that the likes of Honey G will not darken our doors come the live shows. If you’ve given up on The X Factor in recent years, then do try it again, as I think you will be pleasantly surprised. James Martin launched his new Saturday morning cooking show on ITV last weekend, which of course is not meant to be a rival to his old home of Saturday Kitchen on BBC 1. To be fair, it was recorded on location, and perfectly pleasant, but Saturday Kitchen rules with the live element and the excellent Matt Tebbutt, who has made the show his own. James Martin also needs to remember what happened to Antony Worrall Thompson when he went to ITV with his Saturday Cooks show, which disappeared after being bounced around in the schedule, due to Martin taking over Saturday Kitchen.

Double WEDnesday treat for Corrie viewers

ITV have announced the transmission date for the extra weekly episode of Coronation Street - and it is a double WEDnesday treat for viewers. The first extra episode will air on Wednesday September 20th at 9.30pm meaning Corrie fans get double helpings of their favourite soap on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays every week. has decided to still go ahead with the marriage jilted mistress Maria gatecrashes the wedding in truly jaw dropping style. What follows is one of the most sensational stunt-filled weddings the cobbles have ever seen. But the drama is not confined to Aidan and Eva’s nuptials. Things don’t go quite to plan for Jenny and Johnny when Rita’s health takes a turn for the worse. As a concerned Jenny refuses to leave her hospital bedside it looks as though neither of the Connor men are going to manage to tie the knot. Electric cars for a new car-sharing service in Madrid

A new car-sharing service in Madrid will become a reality thanks to the expertise of 2 leading companies.

Renault has no problem selling its all-electric Zoe with a 49% sales jump in Europe earlier this year, but it’s about to deploy a bunch more in a single move through a new car-sharing service in Madrid. The French automaker plans an initial fleet of 500 electric vehicles by October. They partnered with Ferrovial Services, a major infrastructure company in Spain, to offer the new service called ‘Zity’: “This new car-sharing service in Madrid will become a reality thanks to the expertise of 2 leading companies Zity combines Ferrovial Services’ capacities in the area of municipal services and environmentally-friendly solutions with Renault’s experience as Europe’s foremost supplier of electric cars and a leading brand in the field of sustainable mobility. The Madrid car sharing service will use the new ZOE. It is currently the only mass-market electric car on the market to offer an NEDC range of 400km, equivalent to about 300km in real-world conditions, thereby extending range and usage time and adressing an even larger number of users.” That’s a significant electric car fleet and interestingly, Madrid already has a few of those. Last year, Nissan claimed the world’s largest electric taxi fleet deal with 110 new LEAFs and the city and later Uber deployed a fleet of Tesla Model S vehicles through its new ‘UberOne’ service in Madrid. Tesla expanded its retail presence in Spain with new stores in Madrid and Barcelona around the same time. Electric car sales in Spain are on the rise, but they still represent only a small fraction of overall car sales. BMW i3, Renault Zoe, and Nissan Leaf, are the most popular vehicles, but the 500 new Zoes for the new car-sharing service will more than double Renault’s entire Zoe sales for the year with this single fleet.

BMW AT THE IAA CARS 2017 IN FRANKFURT The Frankfurt Motor Show on 14 – 24 September 2017 is your opportunity to experience the new models in action too.

BMW is firing the starting gun on the brand’s forthcoming product offensive with an extraordinary pageant of new models and concept vehicles at the IAA Cars 2017 show in Frankfurt am Main. The company’s stand centres on its expanded luxury class line-up, captivating studies and production models in numerous segments exhibited at a public trade fair for the first time. The new products unveiled at the 2017 Frankfurt show highlight the status of BMW as a manufacturer of vehicles that transmit unrivalled levels of emotional appeal with their inspirational design, trailblazing innovations and the driving pleasure for which the brand is renowned. BMW is also showcasing the latest technological developments for the future of personal mobility, in which powertrain electrification, comprehensive digitalisation and other advances in the field of automated driving will play a particularly important role. Hall 11 at the main entrance to the Frankfurt trade fair site has been prepared for the shared BMW, MINI and BMW Motorrad stand, and serves as a forum for current and future highlights of the product range. This is where the new products and features from all the brands will be presented under the slogan “This is tomorrow. Now. Die Zukunft ist jetzt”. The exhibition space covers an area of over 10,500 square metres and has a circuit running around it that is about 150 metres long. This will give visitors to the Frankfurt Motor Show on 14 – 24 September 2017 the opportunity to experience the new models in action too. Both the BMW Concept 8 Series and the BMW 7 Series Edition 40 Jahre are testimony to

BMW’s expanded presence in the luxury segment. Other facets of driving pleasure are demonstrated at the 2017 Frankfurt show by the BMW Concept Z4, the new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo and the new BMW X3 respectively – including exhilarating open-air fun, elegance and longdistance comfort, not to mention multi-faceted sportiness. The knowhow gleaned from competing in motor sport is a traditional component of the BMW brand’s DNA, and it endows the new BMW M8 GTE with ideal credentials for endurance racing. The new BMW M5 (fuel consumption combined: 10.5 l/100 km [26.9 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 241 g/km), meanwhile, transfers these high-performance genes from track to road to stunning effect. The new edition of the BMW i3 (combined fuel consumption: 0.0 l/100 km; combined electric power consumption: 13.6 – 13.1 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions from petrol: 0 g/km), which is BMW at the IAA Cars 2017 in Frankfurt. Summary. BMW Media Information 08/2017 Page 2 making its debut appearance at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show together with the new and even sportier BMW i3s (combined fuel consumption: 0.0 l/100 km; combined electric power consumption: 14.3 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions from petrol: 0 g/km) illustrates just how closely the company associates driving pleasure with sustainability. BMW Motorrad is also placing the spotlight on the intensely emotional and sustainable sides of mobility in Frankfurt. The BMW Motorrad Concept Link, boasting an all-electric drive system and state-of-the-art connectivity technology, are joined by numerous other pioneering ideas for urban mobility in tomorrow’s world.

Justin’s Boston Boost

Justin Thomas fired a closing round of 66 at the TPC course in Boston to secure a three shot victory over Jordan Spieth in the Dell Technologies Championship on Monday. Australia’s Marc Leishman finished third and England’s Paul Casey tied for fourth with Spain’s Jon Rahm. Former major champions Adam Scott and Bubba Watson were among their players to see their Fed ExCup hopes end at Boston. Only the top 70 players in the FedExCup standings after the tournament progressed to the BMW Championship - the third of the PGA Tour's season-ending four play-off series next week - with both players failing to move inside that bubble. Watson dropped three places to 75th spot after ending the week in a share of 69th,

while Scott slipped to 79th position with a missed cut and Branden Grace also failed to progress. Three players jumped in to the top 70 to extend their seasons, with former Open champion Stewart Cink rising 24 places in to 57th after grabbing 12th spot. Spain's Rafa Cabrera Bello fired a bogey-free 65 to finish the week inside the top 20 and move from 80th to 60th, while Emiliano Grillo finished 22nd to jump 15 places in the standings to 62nd. Russell Knox and Kelly Kraft both slipped out of the top 70 and were eliminated from the remaining events, with Knox struggling to tied-61st and Kraft not progressing beyond 36-holes.

Half Century For Westy Defending champion Alex Noren headlines the field for this weekend’s Omega European Masters at Crans-sur-Sierre win in what will be a special tournament for Lee Westwood. Noren is joined on the start list by Race to Dubai leader Tommy Fleetwood and past winners Danny Willett, Luke Donald, as well as Westwood. It’s a big week for Westwood as he makes his 500th European Tour appearance. The former World Number 1 finished in the top-10 at last week’s D+D REAL Czech Masters and will hope to build on that performance this time out. This is one of the European Tour’s oldest tournament venues and has been a fixture on the circuit since the Tour’s inception in 1972. Past winners include Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo, Lee Westwood, Luke Donald and Sergio Garcia. Last year, Alex Noren claimed the second of the four European Tour victories he racked up in 2016. The Swede came through a playoff against Scott Hend at Crans-sur-Sierre. Crans-sur-Sierre has, perhaps, the most spectacular backdrop of any course on the European Tour. With the towering Swiss Alps surrounding the layout, this event makes for a stunning TV spectacle. The layout dates from 1908, though it was redesigned in the late 1920s then altered by Seve back in 1999. It’s not a long layout but it requires accurate hitting. If a player can keep the ball on track, good scores are possible. Back in 1992, Jamie Spence shot a 60 in the final round to force a playoff (which he then won) against Anders Forsbrand.

Marc’s Marino Test

The Moto GP circus turns its sights on San Marino once again, returning this weekend for Round 13, minus local favourite Valentino Rossi, who badly broke his leg last week. Ducati’s Italian rider Andrea Dovizioso leads the now diminished 2017 chase pursued by three Spaniards Marc Marquez (pictured top), Maverick Viñales and Dani Pedrosa. Reigning MotoGP World Champion Marc Marquez has intimated he will only go for the win at this weekend’s Misano MotoGP round if it is possible while also keeping an eye on the championship standings. Spain’s Repsol Honda man lost his series lead to Andrea Dovizioso after blowing an engine at the British GP in Silverstone and now says victory is not the only target in the upcoming races.

“We’ll try and have a great weekend in Misano, putting the last race behind us. The important thing is that lately we’ve been competitive at all kinds of tracks, so now we go to Misano, which has a twisty, tight layout, with the same approach and mentality that have worked very well for us so far,” said Marquez. “We’ll look to be as strong as possible, not with victory as the only target but ready to fight for it if we have the opportunity to do so. “We’ll work to get the best result possible. We had a positive test there in August, so we’ll go there ready to start well beginning this Friday morning.” On Monday, Yamaha announced it will not replace the injured Valentino Rossi for this weekend's Misano MotoGP race. Rossi has been ruled out of action for at least a month

after the Italian broke his leg in a motocross crash, putting him out of Misano and the following round in Aragon. But, instead of fielding a replacement for the 38-yearold, Yamaha has confirmed it will run a sole factory bike for Spain’s Maverick Vinales this weekend. It remains to be seen whether Yamaha will replace Rossi for Aragon, should the seven-time premier class champion remain unfit for the Spanish race as expected. Yamaha test rider Katsuyuki Nakasuga, a veteran of seven MotoGP races since 2011, would be available to race alongside Vinales at Aragon as there is no clashing All-Japan Superbike race that weekend. The 36-year-old cannot be at Misano as he will be competing at Autopolis instead.

Pirates Crush Torry

Local rivals Pinatar Pirates rolled over local rivals Torrevieja Cricket Club cheaply in the latest ECCL Division Two match at Torrevieja last weekend, as the visitors romped in to win by 76 runs. Pinatar batting first were dismissed for 135, with only

three players making double figures. Vikash Singh top scored with 29 whilst young Robin Singh took four wickets for only nine runs. Another of the home side’s senior bowlers, Neville Harris (pictured next to Robin) chipped in with three wickets as Torry looked to

be on top at the innings break. However, the home side’s batting struggled even more than the visitors and they were skittled out for just 59 in the 30th over. Gopi Singh took five for 18 in an excellent spell of bowling.

Rugger Appeal

The Bettas Torrevieja rugby club has been progressing in recent weeks with a handful of enthusiasts growing to around 12 to 14 female players joining in the training sessions. The club was only formed a couple of months ago with

the aim of getting a ladies team together, but now their aim has changed and they are looking at junior teams as well. This is due to the amount of interest from the parents and youngsters coming along and seeing the training.

The club is appealing for more players to join in the training sessions at the Torrevieja athletics track on a Wednesday evening and Sunday morning, be they juniors, ladies and men. More details are available from Javi on 603 727 179.

Fred’s Trophy Match CD Montesinos will be taking on CF Alicante this Sunday evening (September 10th) at the Montesinos Municipal ground with a 6.30 pm kickoff in a contest for the Frederick Griggs Trophy. Fred Griggs was the president of the Full Monte supporters club and died two years ago at the age of 82, with the annual Full Monte cup being renamed in his memory.

CD TORREVIEJA 1 CD ALMORADI 0 A fortunate first-half goal directly from a Manu Amores corner secured the win for Torrevieja at the Nelson Mandela stadium on Sunday in a repeat staging of last season’s opening fixture between the two Vega Baja sides. The difference this time is that both were relegated from the Valencia third division last spring, and have been rebuilding their squads to begin life in the Preferente Group Four, though for Almoradi it was an immediate return after just one season at the higher level. It was a close contest and Almoradi started the brighter of the two sides creating a number of chances through with exTorrevieja player Saul and Angel causing particular problems for the Torry defenders, and Nemo squandering a good opportunity. Fortune favoured Torrevieja in the 23rd minute when Manu Amores stepped up to take a corner and it sneaked past everybody to go into the back of the net. As the match continued, Almoradi squandered a number of chances to at least go back home with a point, whilst Torrevieja’s defence held firm, whilst the home side’s best chance saw Beltran have a second-half shot well saved by Almoradi keeper Beltran, with Saul and Tranche coming close to putting the visitors on the scoresheet.

There were positives for both sides from this match ahead of the long season ahead, with Almoradi creating chances , whilst pretty much a brand new Torry side offers some promise. CD Torrevieja have another home match as they return to their old Vicente Garcia stadium this Sunday (6.00 pm kick-off) to take on Villena CF, who recorded an excellent opening day win over CD Thader (see below), whilst Almoradi will entertain the University of Alicante.

Losing Start

VILLENA CF 2 CD THADER 0 Thader started their Preferente campaign strongly at Villena but the home side began to get into gear after 20 minutes, and Chema took advantage of a poor Thader defensive clearance to beat keeper Pazos in the 38th minute. In contrast to the first half, Villena started the second period in dominant style and created a string of chances but with no success until Wilson got their second on the hour mark. Javito got his marching orders with three minutes remaining for a second booking, and Thader came away with nothing, who now look to open up their account against Orihuela CF B this Sunday.

DEPORTIVO ARAGON 0 ELCHE 4 Two games gone in the Valencian third division this season, and two draws for Orihuela, as they picked up a point at promoted Paiporta CF last Sunday. It was looking good for Orihuela (team pictured above before kick-off) as Benja netted on the stroke of half-time, but at the death, Paiporta levellled through Jordan in the fifth minute of second-half added time to earn their first point of the season. Orihuela return home to the Los Arcos stadium this Sunday evening to take on a side that struggled last season, Silla CF, with a 6.00 pm kick-off. Crevillente are also looking to open their winning account and they also got stung in injury time, as they went down two-one at CD Roda. Arias got the leveller for Crevillente on the hour mark (pictured below), but the home side struck to get the winner at the death. Crevillente now entertain Rayo Ibense tomorrow evening (Saturday), with a 7.00 pm kick-off. Elche Ilicitano prop up the bottom of the table, with no points to their name, after a two-nil defeat at Atletico Levante. They’re at home this Saturday against Torre Levante, in a match that starts at 6.00 pm.

Two goals from Javi Flores helped Elche to go second in the Segunda Division B table on Sunday lunchtime, and though it is extremely early days, at least the Ilicitanos have found out how to score goals, a skill that they have been woeful short of in their disastrous previous season. It was Elche’s third victory in a week, and Vicente Mir’s side dominated from start to finish, as they lie second in the table, two points behind Villarreal B. A top quality goal from in-form Sory Kaba, as he beat two defenders, opened up the Ilicitanos account in the 29th minute, but despite running the show, it took until the 54th minute for Javi Flores to double the visitor’s advantage. The home side had little to offer, but Elche did’nt sew up the game until the last 10 minutes, with goals from Benja (83 minutes) and a second from Javi Flores two minutes later. “We had a good game”, said coach Vicente Mir, “…and we dominated the match and we were the better of the two sides. We created chances and also kept a clean sheet, which is important”. The Ilicitanos have perfect opponents for their next league match when they are at home to CF Peralada this Sunday evening with a 7.00 pm kick-off. The visitors have no points to their name so far this season, but as Elche fans will well remember from the last campaign, part of their undoing was their inability to deal with teams at home that they should have beaten.

Orihuela Out

Extra Time Victors

ELCHE 3 SDC DURANGO 2 (AET) A one-goal advantage for Orihuela (in yellow kit) from last week’s first leg of the Copa RFEF tie against Ontinyent was not enough, as the Vega Baja side were beaten three-nil away on Wednesday night. The Copa RFEF is a tournament for teams from the Segunda División B, the Tercera División and sometimes from the Preferente Regional who have failed to qualify or have been eliminated in the first round of the Copa del Rey. Orihuela’s first leg advantage disappeared after just two minutes as Tito levelled the tie, with Feita (51 minutes) and Russo (63 minutes) ensuring Ontinyent’s progress in the competition.

For the second successive Wednesday, Elche saw a Copa del Rey tie go into extra time, but this week they did not need a penalty shoot out, as two extra time goals took the Ilicitanos into the third round. The Basque third division team were worthy opponents and were clearly the better side in the first half against an in-form Ilicitanos outfit. The visitors deservedly took the lead through Abasolo in the 16th minute and he should have doubled the advantage 10 minutes later when Elche’s defenders gave the ball away, with the Durango striker squandering an excellent opportunity as he shot wide. Such was the worrying quality of the Elche performance that coach Vicente Mir made a double substitution with barely half an hour on the clock, and Lolo Plà equalised with a cracking goal just before half-time to ease the Ilicitanos worries. The second half saw Elche far more positive but no real chances were created as the Durango defence held firm, with Lolo Plà producing the best opportunity to force a save from Durango keeper Errasti. Two goals in the first period of extra time put Elche in the ascendency with a Sory Kaba header (94 minutes) and secondhalf subsitute Collantes getting the third (100 minutes), though Josu pulled a goal back at the end of the first period to produce a nail-biting final 15 minutes for Ilicitanos fans. The Elche supporters, relieved at the victory, applauded the gutsy Basque players as they trooped off the field, but safe in the knowledge that their side are in today’s third round draw, with the tie set to be played on Wednesday September 20th.

Simeone Deal

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has signed a twoyear contract extension with the La Liga club, who are very early leaders of the Primera division after two matches. The 47-year-old Argentine, whose previous deal was due to expire at the end of the season, has committed to the club until June 2020. He is the longest-serving current La Liga manager, having been appointed in 2011. Also a former Atletico player, Simeone led the club to the La Liga title in 2014. His side finished Champions League runners-up twice - in 2014 and 2016, both times losing to city rivals Real Madrid - but also won the Europa League in 2012 and the Spanish Cup in 2013. Atletico began this season with a 2-2 draw at newly promoted Girona, before thrashing Las Palmas 5-1. They next play away to Valencia tomorrow. Simeone originally agreed a deal that ran until 2020 two years ago, in March 2015, but he and the club agreed to a twoyear reduction in September 2016. There was talk last year that Simeone would move on from Atletico at the end of his current deal, but the new extension ends the speculation on his future.

Odegaard Extends

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has reassured his club's supporters that Lionel Messi's new contract has been signed, albeit by the player's father. The La Liga side announced an agreement with Messi, their all-time leading goalscorer, in July to extend his stay to 2021 but the Argentine has not yet put pen to paper, prompting fears he might leave at the end of the season when his previous contract expires. In an interview with newspaper Diario Sport, published on Tuesday, Bartomeu said Messi's father Jorge had signed the contract and the only outstanding matter was to take a photo of Messi doing it himself. "It's all agreed and signed. There are three contracts," said Bartomeu. "One with the Messi Foundation, which is signed by its president and the player's brother, an image rights contract with Messi signed by his father, who is the administrator of his company, and his employment contract, which his father signed - he has the power to do so. "(What remains is) that Leo arrives and we have the official photograph and the protocol of the signature. The contract is signed and it's valid from the month of June, June 30th, the same day he got married." Bartomeu also spoke about Andres Iniesta's new contract(Iniesta pictured below), with Barcelona's veteran playmaker on a deal which expires at the end of the season. "We have the basis of a deal to renew and we hope to seal it in the coming weeks," Bartomeu told Mundo Deportivo. "The idea is that he has an indefinite contract which renews automatically year on year until he thinks he wants to retire or change." Barcelona return to action after the international break, with a home fixture against Espanyol this Saturday evening.

Martin Odegaard has confirmed he has agreed a new contract with Real Madrid beyond 2018. Speaking after his involvement for Norway's under-21 side in their 0-0 draw with Israel, the 18-year-old attacking midfielder said little about his contract other than that it had been extended:-"A little more than 2018, at least. I don't want to say much more at the moment." Odegaard's original contract, signed when he joined Real as a 16-year-old in 2015 after much interest from Europe's top clubs, was set to expire at the end of the 2017-18 season. The Norway international is on an 18-month loan spell with Eredivisie club Heerenveen, which began in January, and he has made only a single senior league appearance for Real since moving to the Santiago Bernabeu from Norwegian side Stromsgodset. Real have a rare Saturday lunchtime La Liga fixture tomorrow as they entertain Levante with a 1.00 pm kick-off.

BRUM WINS

THE BLUES V THE REDS!

Birmingham has been chosen over Liverpool for England's bid to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games. The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport has backed the West Midlands city which would have to convince the Commonwealth Games Federation it should stage the event. Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia is likely to be the main rival after Durban was stripped of the event in March.

NIC’S DATE

Just for a change, and no offence to some Premier League club fans, most of the big boys are playing on a Saturday on the back of the international break, writes ALEX TRELINSKI. There’s a cracker to get things going tomorrow lunchtime as fourth-placed Manchester City take on Liverpool (1.30 pm kick-off) at the Etihad Stadium, with last season’s meeting in Manchester producing an entertaining one-all draw. Both clubs have started the season with two wins and a draw in their opening three league fixtures, but Liverpool lie second in the table having scored eight goals in those matches. Manchester City will be without Raheem Sterling, suspended after his controversial red card in the Bournemouth side, whilst the German international midfielder Ilkay Gundogan could be back in the squad, with the 26-year-old not appearing for Pep Guardiola’s side in the Premier League since

December, when he suffered a cruciate ligament tear in a win over Watford. Liverpool will probably start Phillipe (Forget Barcelona for the time being) Coutinho on the bench where he may be joined on the bench by new signing Alex OxladeChamberlain, with the £35million man unlikely to be handed his debut ahead of Emre Can, Jordan Henderson or Giorginio Wijnaldum. Adam Lallana and Nathaniel Clyne are still out injured, but Simon Mignolet is expected to return in goal after being rested for the win over Arsenal. Leaders Manchester United have to wait until 6.30 pm for their tricky trip down the M6 to Stoke City, whilst surprise package Huddersfield will drag their heels around until Monday night with every chance of inflicting more misery at West Ham United where a home defeat would probably spell the end for manager Slaven Bilić.

DOUBLE BECKONS

Britain's Nicola Adams will fight on the Saul Alvarez v Gennady Golovkin undercard in Las Vegas on Saturday September 16th. The double Olympic champion, who turned professional in January, is making her debut in the United States and takes on Hungarian Alexandra Vlajk. She beat Virginia Carcamo and Mexico's Maryan Salazar in her first two bouts.

Barring disaster, Chris Froome is still on to course to win La Vuelta this Sunday (as The Courier went to press), when it finishes in a largely ceremonial stage in Madrid. An almost foregone conclusion for a Froome win changed on Wednesday as he suffered a tough

mountain stage to finish 14th, as his lead was cut to one minute and 16 seconds. The Team Sky rider and Tour de France champion is aiming to become the first person to win the Tour de France and La Vuelta in the same year since Bernard Hinault did it in 1978.
