The difference between a non-resident certificate and non-resident taxes In this article I will try and clarify an issue that has caused confusion to a number of my clients. By law, banks are obliged to ascertain the status of their clients -either resident or non-resident- regularly and pass this information on to the tax office. Most banks will do this on an annual basis, some

every two years. For this, the bank sends a form to the account holder’s home address. ALOE VERA

‘There are so many health benefits to using aloe vera gel...’

NATURE’S PORTABLE FIRST AID KIT

Back when I was in my 20's I spent a year living in the Mexican city of Guanajuato. It was there, after a very unfortunate incident with a gas water heater and a naked flame, that I ended up in a hospital emergency room with the top layer of skin burnt off my face and neck. The doctor that treated me didn't seem too concerned, he simply handed me one of the small spiky plants that were growing in pots around the department with instructions to smear the gel inside the leaves over my face for the next week. It worked, within five days my burnt skin was completely healed without a single scar and there began my love affair with the truly wondrous aloe vera plant. All of us heard how effective aloe vera gel is in the treatment of sunburn, in fact, most people think that is all it is good for. In reality though aloe vera is useful for both external and internal use and can indeed be considered a super food. All you need do is snap off a leaf, remove the skin to reveal the jelly like interior and chop it into water or fruit juice, whizz it into smoothies, mix it with yoghurt.... It's not the tastiest thing in the world but the health benefits it offers make up for that. The aloe vera plant grows abundantly in this area of Spain. It is antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal, and is well known by herbalists. It's common sense really, if aloe vera gel wasn't antibacterial every little tear or scrape of the plant would result in the entire thing being eaten up by bacteria. Aloe needs to be antibacterial simply to survive in the wild or its moist, nutrient rich gel would provide a perfect breeding ground for invading bacteria.

Analysis of the plant shows that aloe vera gel contains: • Water • 20 minerals • 12 vitamins • 18 amino acids • 200 active plant compounds (phytonutrients), including: • Enzymes • Triterpenes (a phytonutrient that lowers blood sugar) • Glyconutrients & glycoproteins • Polysaccharides, including: • Acemannan, mannose-6-phosphate polymannans • Phenolic glycosides, including: • Dihydrocoumarins There are actually so many health benefits to using aloe vera gel that I can only go into a few of them in this article. Let's start with the external, topical use of it on the skin. I personally think that we should all throw out our standard first aid kids with all those silly toxic antibacterial sprays, creams, lotions and bandages and simply replace them with aloe vera plants. I've been known to pack small chunks of aloe vera gel inside wounds that have healed in just a few days with zero scarring. As the aloe gel dries it contracts and draws the wound shut while attracting an increased flow of blood to the wound which accelerates healing. At the same time the aloe vera gel kills bacteria, prevents infection and also provides nourishment to the wound tissue. I use it regularly on my dogs and cats, if they lick the wound they're not licking all those harmful toxic chemicals found in most first aid products and it's so easy and cheap to re-apply. Why on earth would anyone consider smearing wounds and injuries with toxic antibacterial creams and sprays? Whenever I go hiking in the mountains I take a leaf of aloe with me. It treats cuts, scrapes, burns, bites, stings, punctures, sprains, sunburns and even bruises. And as an added bonus if you ever find yourself stranded and dying of thirst you can eat the gel for its water content.

Another interesting use of aloe vera is in its effective treatment of gum disease. You can either rub the gel directly onto your gum line or take the gel mixed with water as a mouthwash, it’s fantastic for mouth ulcers too and don’t forget you can drink it as well. By doing so you’ll be bathing your gums in healing aloe gel and any bleeding, swollen or painful areas you have will begin to heal rapidly. Even severe cases of gum disease can be completely cured in a matter of weeks. So forget about all those chemically flavoured, blow your head off mouthwashes. Bathe and nourish your gums, and general oral area with aloe gel. You’ll not only benefit your gums and oral hygiene but you’ll be cutting down on your body’s general chemical load which is always a good thing! So go on, invest in a couple of aloe vera plants, they grow easily in this climate and you’ll have your own perfect little, portable first aid kit growing right at your fingertips. More to come on the super healing powers of aloe vera in future articles. Happy natural healing everyone! Expat life in Spain: you’ve survived, now THRIVE! O nce you’ve settled in, it’s time to branch out in your new surroundings. Expat Linda A. Janssen offers ten tips to deepen connections and enrich the expat experience in Spain. Settling into life in a new country requires time and energy. You are often dealing with a different culture, language, and climate while getting accustomed to your new home, job, neighbourhood, school and local community. Attention and effort are focused on dealing with mundane issues, learning new things and just trying to survive. But, at a certain point you will begin to feel more settled. You will no longer think of yourself as having recently arrived. MEMORIES OF AFRICA By Malcom Palmer....part three

Amazingly, my recent trip to Kenya was halfway through, as we embarked on a safari which took us around the Great Rift Valley salt lake of Nakuru. Groups of Pelicans stood in the shallows, rivalled in numbers by Greater and Lesser Flamingos, the latter astonishingly pink in the brilliant African sun. Buffalos and the odd little group Zebras stood around, grazing, and Olive Baboons were everywhere, watching us carefully in case we should discard anything edible. A rocky bluff was the site of a picnic place. Confiding Cliffchats fed around the waste-bins, and even tamer, rodent-like Rock Hyrax scampered around the rocks. Their reputed close relationship to Elephants stretches the imagination! Back on the lake-shore, familiar waders included Greenshank, Ruff and a lovely pair of delicate Marsh Sandpipers, while Grey-headed were numerous. A lazy group of Lions, including a proud-looking young male with a half-grown mane, sat around in a big old acacia tree, allowing us to photograph them at will. It was time to move on, and we drove south along good roads to the freshwater lake of

Naivasha, where we were greeted at the super-modern Sopa lodge – its only drawback being the near-marathon you had to partake of from bedroom to restaurant. If it was to be done in the dark, we had to be escorted by a guard, though just what use his truncheon would have been against a charging Hippo, I know not! The great beasts, resembling closely an ex-mother-in-law of mine, ambled about, with Warthogs and Waterbuck, on the lawns. Next morning, we embarked on the lake in canoes, the boatman keeping warily away from the many Hippos. Blacksmith and Spurwinged Plovers, Yellow-billed Stork, Longtailed Cormorants and a gorgeous Hottentot Teal were to be seen, and a narrow creek held Malachite and Pied Kingfishers. The boatman had a party-trick to show us, and, pointing to an African Fish Eagle perched on a distant tree, he whistled and held up a fish. The great bird swooped down and took its prize in midair – twice. We landed on Crescent Island, where there are no carnivores, s o we were, for once, able to walk amongst the many Giraffes, Zebras, Gnus and antelopes of four species. Many birds were there too, including the ubiquitous Superb Starlings, and many Long-tailed Fiscal Shrikes. Back, then to the 4x4, and the long drive to the wonderful Masai Mara, where another Sopa Lodge was to be our home for two nights, and colourful Agama lizards ran along the walls. Sooty Chats fed around my patio, but we were soon whisked off on the first of our four safaris there. Scraggy-looking Gnus and Coke’s Hartebeests were everywhere, as were the inevitable Zebras, and groups of ag-

ile Thompson’s Gazelles bounded away at our approach. Beautiful Lilac-breasted Rollers and three migrant Lesser Grey Shrikes - extreme rarities in Spain – were by the roadside, and the two species of Guineafowl were keeping well away from the Masai villages – they are, our guide told us, very good eating! Charmed, we watched a mother Cheetah teaching two kittens to hunt, half-heartedly chasing a bunch of ‘Tommies’ which had wandered too close. Topi and Reedbuck were two new kinds of antelope for us, but we saw a couple of safari vehicles near a rocky knoll, and when we joined them, saw a magnificent male Lion, basking in the late sun. It had been a great day. The following morning, three of our party left before daylight for a balloon excursion, leaving just Luis and myself with guide for the morning. I was able to concentrate a little more on the birds, seeing beautiful Striped Swallows, Yellow-throated Longclaw, and the wonderful Secretary Bird, that strange, longlegged species that lives on snakes, as well as a tremendous Lappet-faced Vulture. When we stopped at a lodge for a while, I really came into my own, finding a singing Icterine Warbler – bound for Europe in a while, then seeing our only - fantastic – Bateleurs fly over. While us lot at the Jungle Drums team are clearly preparing for a (very) late charge up the table in search of glory others have made the move too this month, but not only upwards. The Blue & White army seem to be doing the best ‘Leeds’ impression so

Mrs Ireland has gathered more points than the Irish GDP and leapt up the table form 13th in March to 6th so Adam Parkin may be wise to take a look over his shoulder – although he has been one of the season’s top performer. OT Dreamteam are still up there

The Translator looks to be heading for the ‘most consistent performance’ award of 2011 having grabbed bottom spot and sat on it for most of the season, and no real sign of him pulling away, at least he’ll have Paul Payne and his Blue & Whites for company soon… But it’s at the top we should be looking and

LEAVING THE OFFICE EARLY Three girls all worked in the same office with the same female boss. Each day, they noticed the boss left work early. One day the girls decided that when the boss left, they would leave right behind her. After all, she never called or came back to work, so how would she know they went home early?? The brunette was thrilled to be home early. She did a little gardening, spent playtime with her son, and went to bed early. The redhead was elated to be able to get in a quick workout at the spa before meeting a dinner date. The blonde was happy to get home early and surprise her husband, but when she got to her bedroom, she heard a muffled noise from inside. Slowly and quietly, she cracked open the door and was mortified to see her husband in bed with her lady boss!! Gently, she closed the door and crept out of her house. The next day, at their coffee break, the brunette and redhead planned to leave early again, and they asked the blonde if she was going to go with them. “No way”, the blonde exclaimed. “I almost got caught yesterday.”

TSI Removals getting your goods there safely You may have thought that there is an exodus of people returning to the UK from Spain but we had a chat with removal company TSI Removals who run a service from Spain to the UK and vice versa on a monthly basis and it seems that there are just as many, if not more, Brits coming out here than there is going back. TSI tell me that because of that expansion has been rapid in recent years for example the company is now expanding to cover a larger area of Spain and they are also one of the few removals companies who deliver to the north or England and Scotland.. They originally set up 6 years ago as a small local service called the water geezer, helping with small deliveries from shops, door to door for those how didn’t have their own transport. That then grew into removals from and to the UK, then into pet transport and now that have had such demand from people wanting to bring/return with their pet that they are investing more in the pet transport side of things. Another string to the TSI bow is the regular visits back to the UK to collect items for customers from Argos and Screwfix - customers simply order from the catalogue which they will supply and for a small fee they will bring the delivery back to your home in Spain. Along with all this TSI also cater for light removals and a personal service that is fully insured. They are animal lovers, so no worries whether Fido or Fifi, and they are fully insured so you can relax and only worry about getting yourselves to the destination.

TSI can be contacted on 96 679 5842 or email them at: tsi_removals@hotmail.co.uk

WHY PAY MORE for ADVERTISING?

APRIL 2011 Drinking to excess and being thrown off a plane are your lucky ‘the authorities are on their way’ activities this month. Your new year pledge to try new meats will be aided by Jupiter this month as Koala Bear, Egyptian goat and chicken that died of a natural heart attack, become available in your area following some sort of accident. In any reality tv show you are taking part in tend towards the Lazy Tool end of the scale rather than Point Jumping Tool. The stubbing your toe on the bedpost advisory we forgot to mention last month continues. Favor the small fluffy bunny rabbit type animal in any extreme Disney situation, including in dreams and drug induced hallucinations, until well into May. Your vague ideas for some sort of financial restructuring is in need of some expert advice. Turkey Trots, waltzes and The Lithuanian Prance are your lucky dance styles. Bright yellow is your lucky pet lizard color for just about half of the month then it reverts back to green. Aches, creaks and small cracking sounds coming from your joints, are all a sign from the planets this February. Rejoice that you are alive to feel these cracks and small bangs when you walk up stairs or kneel down to pick something up. Charlie Sheen continues to be your preferred method of partying this month and until at least May this year. Microphone feedback with giant speakers in a small room is to be preferred over nails scratched repeatedly down a blackboard when you want to audioalise your feelings this month. Check that any temporary face paint or face pen does come off with a quick wash as there is a dubious consignment delivered to your area. Your ability to accidentally pull down web sites, to hack them without even knowing it, is about to become a problem for governments around the world. Those people who were hacking sites on behalf of wikileaks the other month are now looking for you. Avoid going on the internet at night for your own protection and for that of others. Change all your passwords five times a day.

Neck ties, cravats and scarf’s tied like a neck tie are your lucky neckwear this month. Teflon will once again be your lucky non-stick frying pan covering especially when cooking eggs sunny side up around 23rd of the month. Carrots are about to become your vegetable of choice this month, finally replacing cauliflower from the number one position in your vegetable pick of the pops. The joys of Spring, including cleaning out your bedroom before Dad tells you to do what Mom told you, again, are about to provide you with moments of cleaning introspection this month in a Toy Story 3 kind of way. (You should have stopped playing with toys called Woody and Shaggy when you were 14, you know it, but it just felt so right how could it be wrong?)

‘Oink-ing’, ‘Moo-ing’ and ‘Cock-a-doodle-do-ing’ are your lucky farm yard sounds this month. Test tubes less than half filled with blue chemicals are your preferred mad scientist experiment this month, especially when you have red or green bubbling liquids under the bunsen burner nearby.

Walking is about to become particularly lucky for Sagittarius this month, running a bit more so, as Jupiter attempts to neck Neptune in a rare display of interplanetary affection. Talking without thinking what you are saying continues to be your preferred method of social intercourse this month especially in conversations over derivatives and options with bankers.

Singing is well starred this month (particularly traditional hand-up-to-ear folk and head banging punk with red mohican) in public places including bus stops and waiting in line at the post office. Favor the Jason Stathem in The Transporter or Jake Gyllenhaal in Prince of Persia look in any muscular shirt off displays this month, especially in any beach walks after heavy lunches on Thursdays.

A magic trick where a person disappears and then reappears will be your only chance for escape in some sort of traffic violation where a police officer pulls you over this month. Make sure you have enough magic cabinets, cloaks and hats on hand at all times.

The cuticles on your right hand are set to provide an important message this month, as Saturn and Jupiter pivot in a North Easterly direction flatly, the first time that has happened for 5 million years. Avoid applications of nail varnish in the north easterly direction until well into the second half of the year. Tennis and ping-pong are your lucky ball sports with a net, from 3rd April until 18th June.

PREGNANCY Q&A Q: Should I have a baby after 35? A: No, 35 children is enough. Q : I’m two months pregnant now. When will my baby move? A: With any luck, right after he finishes university. Q : What is the most reliable method to determine a baby’s sex? A: Childbirth. Q: My wife is five months pregnant and so moody that sometimes she’s borderline irrational. A: So what’s your question? Q : My childbirth instructor says it’s not pain I’ll feel during labour, but pressure. Is she right? A: Yes, in the same way that a cyclone might be called an air current. Q: When is the best time to get an epidural? A: Right after you find out you’re pregnant. Q : Is there any reason I have to be in the delivery room while my wife is in labour? A: Not unless the word ‘child support payment’ means anything to you. Q: Is there anything I should avoid while recovering from childbirth? A: Yes, pregnancy. Q : Do I have to have a baby shower? A: Not if you change the baby’s nappy very quickly Q : Our baby was born last week. When will my wife begin to feel and act normal again? A: When the kids are in university. ‘OESTROGEN ISSUES’ 10 WAYS TO KNOW IF YOU HAVE ‘OESTROGEN ISSUES’ 1. Everyone around you has an attitude problem. 2.
