Escape From It All At Dancing Rabbit Joey Johnson

From the time you drive down the winding, wooded entrance and approach the stately southern-style clubhouse, you know your experience at Dancing Rabbit is going to be special. Set in a forest of towering pines and stately oaks, Dancing Rabbit offers 36 holes of magnificent golf. Dancing Rabbit Golf Club is part of the Pearl River Resort, which is owned and operated by the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians. The two courses, the Azaleas and the Oaks, occupy more than 700 acres of the resort. Over five miles of spring-fed creeks flow through the property, adding to the beauty and subtly challenging the golfer along the way. Each course plays more than 7,000 yards from the championship tees, with five sets of tees to accommodate players of all levels. For years, both courses have received rave reviews for their beauty, quality of golf, and total experience. They certainly live up to their reputations.

Most courses have a signature hole. It’s truly hard to pick one from either the Azaleas or the Oaks. Course designers Tom Fazio and Jerry Pate created 36 spectacular works of art. If ten players were asked to name their favorite hole at Dancing Rabbit, it wouldn’t be surprising to receive ten different answers. Director of Golf Mark Powell and Head Professional Sean Racki do an excellent job. They make sure that each and every guest is welcomed and has a great experience at Dancing Rabbit! The Azaleas features manicured Bermuda fairways and ultra-dwarf Tif-Eagle greens. The lush, rolling fairways of the Azaleas wind throughout a mature forest of pines and hardwoods. The fairways are relatively generous, but stray too far off line and you’ll be challenged by the awaiting forest. Elevation changes, subtle doglegs, strategically placed bunkers, and subtly undulating greens are all consistent throughout. Each hole truly has a personality of its own, however. Like any great course, the Azaleas has a certain rhythm to it. No two holes are alike and yet they complement each other beautifully. As I mentioned, it’s hard to pick favorites when describing the holes at Dancing Rabbit. Below, I’ve chosen to highlight several of my favorites. Number 3 is a medium-long par-4 with a split fairway. A drive placed in the right fairway will give the player the best angle to the green, while a drive to

Notes From the Senior PGA Championship by Rea Schuessler, PGA Professional

As I reflect on the honor of playing in the 2017 Kitchenaid Senior PGA Championship, first of all what a class job Trump National along with the PGA of America did in putting on the event! The golf course was really strong but very fair as noted by the scores. The practice rounds were great Monday and Tuesday as I played with my buddy and fine player Todd McCorkle who works at Old Overton in Birmingham. Ironically, Peter Fowler who I played with in round 1 and 2 joined Todd and I on Monday. On Wednesday, Joe Durant was kind enough to invite me to play with him and two other Club Professionals: John Lee and Jerry Tucker. John is the GM/Director of Golf at The Imperial Club in Naples, Florida. He grew up in Fort Walton Beach. Jerry is 68 years young and has played in 13 Major. He’s formerly of Bellrieve Country Club in St Louis and now teaches full time in South Florida.

Rea with friend and fellow competitor Todd McCorkle at the White House.

rain delays Thursday plus a 45 minute wind delay on Friday afternoon as gust were pushing 35 - 38 mph! My tee time on Friday was 4:20. I hit my tee ball then they blew the horn for the wind delay. I hit a 3 wood on my first hole Friday to stay short of a fairway bunker 280 yards out! Yes the wind was really blowing!

The course played firm and fast through Wednesday. Wednesday night a pretty good rain soaked the playing surfaces, so Thursday the course played softer. That is why the scoring got somewhat easier Thursday for these great players. They could hit the approach shots with some degree of certainty as in the practice rounds you had to be very cautious because of the run out. Another side bar is we had 3.5 hours of 8 • Tee Time on the Gulf Coast

Rea with caddie and Callaway Representative, Jon-Michael Goins.

The cut went from being at even par on Thursday to 4 over after the 2nd round. Some really fine players had scores in the eighties, so that tells you how difficult the scoring became. As I mentioned earlier I was paired with Peter Fowler of Australia and Gary Wostenholme of England. Peter was quite a fixture on the European Tour and still plays very well on the European Senior Tour and Japan Senior Tour. Peter is a class act. He played well in making the cut, finishing at 1 under for 36 holes. He made birdies on 4 out of his last 6 holes as we completed round two Saturday morning teeing off pretty early at 6:45. Peter shot 7373 on the weekend. Gary plays full time on the European Senior Tour also. He played on 8 Walker Cup Teams for Great Britain and Europe and defeated Tiger Woods in a singles match one year. Gary turned pro rather late in his mid 40’s.

Rea spends a little time on the range with Miguel Angel Jimenez and Jose Maria Olazabal.

Rea with 8-time major champion Tom Watson.

As for my game, it was rather disappointing as I got off to poor starts both days shooting 78 - 77. I hit plenty of good shots, but my putting just was not up to the standards it needed to be to compete with these great players. At 57 years of age, after trying numerous times to qualify for one of these, I take home some great memories. I sincerely appreciate the support I have received from friends, colleagues and of course family. As I tell my students, let’s learn from the good, not so good and do the work to get better! As I write this I look forward to getting back to the lesson tee at Kiva Dunes and Craft Farms and helping others enjoy this great game and improve! nice finishing hole. Avoid the fairway bunkers in the landing area to give yourself the best approach to the large, undulating green. Fit your approach shot between the greenside bunker on the right and the rock-walled hazard to the left to give yourself a birdie putt on this great finishing hole!

Individually, each hole at Dancing Rabbit stands up to the test. Together, they combine into a real masterpiece. Both courses are extremely beautiful, challenging, and fun to play! You are truly “away from it all” when you tee off on either course at Dancing Rabbit. There are no houses and no adjacent roads. Each hole is carved out of the natural habitat to create a one-of-a kind serene setting.

Product Review: Vice Pro Soft by Joey Johnson

Last year we reviewed the Vice Pro and Pro Plus golf balls. Vice offers premium golf balls at a lower price point than traditional manufacturers. How? By selling directly to you, the consumer. We were very impressed with the Vice Pro and Pro Plus (we weren’t the only ones - Golf Digest included both balls on their 2016 Hot List). When Vice released the Pro Soft, we had to give it a try! Most Cast Urethane golf balls are designed for the player with high clubhead speeds. Fact is, the majority of golfers swing the club somewhere between 80 and 100 MPH. With that in mind, Vice decided to design a premium Cast Urethane ball for the average player. With the Vice Pro Soft, you receive the same premium features of a “tour” ball, but at a very low compression of just 35. Additional Features of the Vice Pro Soft: - 3-piece Cast Urethane cover - Newly designed BJ13 resin paint coating formula - Matte clear coating finish - 336 dimple design - Low dispersion

The Vice Pro Soft definitely lives up to its name. To me, if feels softer at impact than any other premium low compression ball on the market. Like the previous Vice balls, the Pro Soft performs very well. Distance, trajectory, and spin were all very good. Ultimately, the determining factor is feel. If you like a very soft feel on full shots, chips, and putts then I suggest you give the Vice Pro Soft a try. Additionally, the Pro Soft is designed with a matte finish. Vice claims that this increases friction for more spin on shots around the green. Again, the finish is all about personal preference. Vice prides itself for being on the cutting edge and the matte finish of the Pro Soft definitely fits into that strategy. Overall, I really liked the Vice Pro Soft. It’s a nice addition to their growing line of products. I’d definitely recommend it for players with swing speeds below 100 MPH and anyone who likes a “soft feel” ball. Checklist for Creating the Correct “Impact Fix Position”

by Bobby Hall, PGA Professional

My goal for this article is to help you achieve a strong impact fix position by reviewing the components required to be more consistent in your practice and re-produce the results out on the course. Teaching you to train into a positive impact position requires “slow” positioning of the body until your muscles and your mind allow the development of these techniques. Teachers want you to get the “sweet spot” of the club at the correct “low point” behind the ball at impact to produce proper ball flight. Use your cell phone and have a friend photograph your set up. Next photograph your “Impact Fix” position and check the following points off the list. Please remember to rehearse these positions slowly. Feel your balance points. Hit short chips at a slow rate. Take pictures along the way and discover your mistakes and get them aligned correctly. Here is your check list. Work on the individually if necessary. Impact Fix Check List: 1) Both arms are fully extended. The left arm and hands are slightly ahead of the ball at impact. The right arm is extended and pointed at the left foot/toe line. The shaft angle is leaning forward of its original address position. I like my students to achieve the “reverse K position”. 2) your shoulders should be slightly open to your target line. 3) your left leg is straight with about 85 to 90 per cent of your weight favoring a Jordan Speith, PGA Tour Professional transfer to the left heel. Impact Fix Position: Notice body weight to the left heel; releasing weight from the right foot.

4) your hips are between 30 and 45 de- 80% to 90% of body weight should transfer grees open and your right knee points to the left foot and predominately to the heel. There are players that “jump” onto the toes and should be turned towards your target. Your job as a student is to train for the “Impact Fix” position when ball-striking. Make certain that you produce the components of impact as you swing through to your finish. 24 • Tee Time on the Gulf Coast

have their heels up in the air at impact. My approach is to stable the sweet spot of the club and stabilize balance for control and better ball striking. Notice the left hip slide produces weight shift. Shoulders and hips are “Open” to the target line. The Reverse K position is so important to reproduce through the full swing motions.

Hank Minor – Fairhope, AL. Hank’s short term goals are to improve foot work and balance. Hank enjoys thinking his way through issues and is currently improving game management skills. In 2017 Hank’s short term goals are to compete at local events and on the Southeastern Junior Golf Tour. In the 2018 season Hank would like to compete on the Varsity Team at Fairhope High School.

Tiger Woods, Part Time PGA Tour Professional Although we do not see Tiger very much due to injuries, this picture is from the past and taken at the time he was the #1 Player in the world. His Impact Fix position is still widely copied and you can see all of the points from the article that are in alignment. Notice the positive spine angle tilt from head to belt buckle and the right knee moving down the target line.

Alison Lee, LPGA Professional Tour Player The reverse K alignments are solid at Impact Fix. Alison has her hips and shoulders slightly open to the target line. Left Heel is stable on the ground and weight releasing off of the right side moving to the left. Notice the right knee is starting to point to the target. Head is slightly back from the ball line creating positive spine angle tilt. The left arm is slightly ahead of the shaft creating positive shaft lean. Tee Time on the Gulf Coast • 25

The Golfing Gourmet Gazpach o

Hello once again all my Golfing Foodies, Chef Danny Here! Well it is Summer Time and by now we have gotten use to Sergio now being a Major Champion and we get ready for the rest of the Major golf Season. You know what else I am getting ready for? Those beautiful plump delicious Summer Garden Tomatoes!! I hope all of you got a chance to plant a variety of these delectable treats and probably by the time you read this it will be time to pluck them off the vine and consume. If not, no worries, you can find them on just about every corner of a county road being sold by someone who will be more than happy to tell you their life story. This versatile beauty can be used in so many ways but one of my favorites that is always a hit when I head over to a friend’s house is a cool refreshing Gazpacho. He said what??? You don’t have to be Michael Corleone to enjoy this. It is basically a hearty cold tomato soup. If you can chop and mix, you can make this dish. As always, nothing is better for a bad day on than course than a good meal. Until next Time….. Buon Appetito!! 1- Hot House cucumber – Seeded but not peeled 1- Red Pepper – Cored and Seeded 4- Very Ripe Plump Tomatoes of your choice – I like Hot House 1- Red Onion 2- Minced Garlic Cloves 2- (12 ounce) Cans of Tomato JUICE!!! - Hey spice it up and substitute with your favorite Bloody Mary mix ¼ Cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil ¼ Cup Apple Cider Vinegar- Yes, you can use the organic stuff ½ Tablespoon of Kosher or Sea Salt Fresh Cracked Pepper to taste Garnish with Fresh Basil or Parsley *Blow them away and also garnish with some Boiled Peeled Gulf Shrimp Medium Fine Chop in processor the Cucumber, Red Pepper, Tomatoes, Red Onion, Garlic. In Big Bowl add chopped Ingredients then add Tomato Juice, Olive Oil, Vinegar, Salt and Pepper. Mix and then Cover Bowl Tight!! Put in Fridge for at least 8 hours. Serve with Crusty bread. P.S. Put in a Freezer Gallon Ziploc for later!
