What’s Hot??

Callaway Big Bertha Alpha 816 Double Black Diamond MSRP: $500.00 Two movable, weighted cylinders called “gravity cores” in the sole can add weight to the heel or toe, as needed. The cores can also be flipped heavy end up or down to match your personal sweet spot. Adjustable lofts.

Ping GS Tec/LS Tec MSRP: $400.00 A large clubhead, but still very aerodynamic due to turbulators on the crown, the shape of the sole, and a trailing-edge cavity. A thin crown makes for a low center of gravity. LS Tec is low spin, SF Tec is slice fighting. Ajustable lofts. 6 • Tee Time on the Gulf Coast

TaylorMade M2 MSRP: $400.00 A carbon composite crown allows for weight from the crown to be redistributed to the back of the club making it more stable on off center strikes. The narrow, deep channel in the sole makes thin shots launch with more speed, more height, and less spin. Adjustable lofts.

Cobra King 6+/Pro MSRP: $400.00 An 18 gram movable weight in the sole allows the player to adjust the center of gravity higher or lower, as needed, effecting both spin and launch. The weights sliding chamber is made of lightweight carbon giving the sliding chip more effect. Carbon-composite crown, and light titanium allow body. Five settings at each of the 8 available lofts means 40 total combinations. Adjustable lofts.

“I Want to Get Better”! by Rea Schuessler, PGA Professional What golfer does not want to see improvement at some level? The obvious answer is we all do! So how do we truly do this? Hopefully after digesting the following information you will have an idea or plan that will possibly make 2016 your best year ever! The first thing we must do is take a realistic inventory of our current golf game. Are we satisfied with the different areas that will take us to the “next” level? So take a few moments and write down and rank the following areas: putting, chipping, pitching, wedge play , sand play and long game. Strategy and mental game have a big impact also on your score. Try to create enough categories that give you a realistic snapshot of trends good or bad relative to your game. Below is an example but feel free to create your own. Putting Short Putts - Up to 5 feet. Medium Putts - 5 feet to 20 feet. Long Putts - Outside 20 feet. Wedge Play 10 - 20 Yards 20 - 30 Yards 30 - 40 Yards and up to your full yardage with each wedge. Sand Game Iron Play 9-7 6-4 Hybrids / Fairways Driver Routine Commitment/Strategy relative to each shot. After each category simply check either: Acceptable or Needs Improvement In the areas that are marked needs improvement rank the areas that need the most improvement and budget your practice time relative to those areas. Be smart when budgeting your practice sessions and your weak areas should become stronger which will lead to lower scores. I would like to add seeking out a PGA Professional to help with evaluating your game would be very helpful. We are lucky to have many along the Gulf Coast that 8 • Tee Time on the Gulf Coast

would love to help out! The best players in the world use an extra set of eyes so why shouldn’t you? There is also an app named ShotbyShot that I use to help my students better evaluate their strengths and weaknesses. It is based on the Strokes Gained Statistic analysis that The PGA Tour uses. The great thing about ShotbyShot is that it will compare your game with other golfers in your handicap range which is a realistic snapshot of what needs improvement. There is a monthly fee but well worth it! Good luck and let’s make 2016 a great year! Rea Schuessler is the Lead Instructor of the Gulf Shores Golf Academy. He has been named “One of the Top Teachers in Alabama” by Golf Digest. Rea can be contacted at (251) 978-1625 or rea@honoursgolf.com.

The Golfing Gourmet by Danny Spybey

S h r i m p & G rits

Hello all my Golfing Foodies! Hopefully by now you have had a chance to get out of the winter clothes and into something a little more suited for enjoying a round of golf. Don’t get me wrong, it still is a little chilly out there especially during those early morning or late afternoon rounds. One thing I have always found comforting after a round of golf during a chilly day is a nice big bowl of Shrimp and Grits. We are very fortunate down along the Gulf coast to get some very good Gulf shrimp during this time of the year so we need to take full advantage of it. Also as any good southerner (ok I know I’m originally from Ohio) knows when it comes to grits you only get that creamy gold goodness from 100% Pure Corn (Yellow) Stone Ground Grits. You will be doing yourself a HUUUUUGE injustice if you go that instant white grit in a box road. So here is my take on a food staple that will always bring a smile to your face and (belly). For Grits: 1 ½ Cups Chicken Broth 2 cups Whole Milk ¼ tsp salt ¾ Cup Yellow Stone Ground Grits (the real stuff) 1 cup cheddar cheese (optional) 2 tbsp. butter For Shrimp Topping 1 cup Diced Bacon ½ thinly sliced yellow onion ½ Cup Green/Yellow pepper 2 tsp Hot Sauce 1lb. 16/20 Peeled and deveined Shrimp Sliced Green Onion for Garnish. FOR GRITS: Bring Chicken Broth and milk to a boil. Stir in Grits and salt and return to a boil. Reduce heat to LOW and COVER. Cook for 20 minutes stirring occasionally. FOR SHRIMP TOPPING: Cook Bacon in skillet until crisp. Remove bacon and reserve 2-3 tablespoons of fat. Add peppers and onions and cook until tender. Add shrimp and cook until Pinkish/Orange. Add back the cooked bacon and add the hot sauce and butter. Add Grits to a nice bowl and add shrimp topping. Garnish with sliced Scallions and eat with some nice crusty bread. Until we meet again, Hit ‘em straight and remember you can always buy cheap golf balls so you can buy good Olive Oil. Your Golfing Gourmet! Max Game Improvement Irons Callaway XR OS MSRP: $900.00 Callaway is going against the trend of stronger lofts, and actually increased the lofts in the XR OS to help players with slower swing speeds launch the ball higher. Face wraps around top and bottom providing more flex at impact.

Ping Gmax MSRP: $1,000.00 Heat-treated face on the 4 through 8 irons is very thin leading to flexibility and increased ball speed. Circular structure in cavity increases stability on off 窶田enter hits. Long irons have lighter swingweight to help square the club at impact.

Cobra Max MSRP: $600.00 Half-hollow heads (up to the 8-iron) place weight low and around the perimeter. Wide sole lowers center of gravity and helps with errant strikes. Three hybrids can be substituted for the long irons for an additional $100.00.

20 窶「 Tee Time on the Gulf Coast

Better Player’s Irons Callaway Apex Pro 16 MSPR: $1,200.00 Two tungsten plugs are inserted into holes in the cavity in the long irons to provide a higher launch. A lightweight stainless steel is inserted in the middle irons to keep ball flight down. The holes are empty in the short irons for a piercing trajectory. A great choice for the better play who still wants some forgiveness.

Titleist 716 AP2 MSRP: $1,200.00 Traditional look with forgiveness. Tungsten weighting in the low heel and toe areas provides stability on off-center hits and give these irons a solid feel at impact. Great balance of looks, feel, and forgiveness.

Mizuno MP-25 MSRP: $1,000.00 Classic styling with forgiveness. The same boron-infused carbon that is used in the JPX EZ forged iron is used here. The boron allows for a thinner clubface and a hidden cutthrough slot behind the face increasing ball speed. Tee Time on the Gulf Coast • 21

Wedges

Titleist Vokey Design SM6 MSRP: $150.00 Weight distribution is loft dependent. Low center of gravity on the lower lofts help distance progression from the short irons. Higher center of gravity on the higher lofts tightens distance dispersion. Grooves also change with loft to optimize spin.

Ping Glide MSRP: $130.00 Dyla-wedge grip is extra long for gripping down to control distance and trajectory. Four swing-specific sole grinds, two types of grooves, and a chrome finish that helps repel moisture and increase friction when the rough is wet. 22 • Tee Time on the Gulf Coast

Callaway MD3 MSRP: $130.00 The MD3 line has 15 models, 14 degrees of loft, 3 types of grooves, and 3 sole grinds. The robust product line offers something for just about every swing type and all playing conditions.

Cleveland RTX 2.0/CB MSRP: $130.00 Available in traditional blade and cavity back options. Three layers of spin enhancers, Cleveland’s sharpest grooves ever, and two different milled roughness between the grooves. Thirty-six total variations.

Better Golfers Are Better Strategists! by Bobby Hall, PGA , Quail Creek Golf Course

Ray Floyd said “Weekend golfers are poor strategists.” Pros play optimal or nearly-optimal strategies. In contrast, amateur golfers hit four to seven times more shots out of bounds than they would if they chose an optimal strategy. Some individual golfers hit 25% of their tee shots out of bounds, more than 10 times the optimal fraction! Optimal strategies change with a golfer’s skill level. Hole #15 at Quail Creek Golf Course intimidates the best players. One of Golfers derive more pleasure from a the longer holes on the course; it is up drive in the fairway with the possibilhill with a dog-leg left generally playity of a par or birdie, even if it carries ing into the wind. The hole has out of a greater chance of a double or triple bounds both left and right and a fairbogey. The lesson is that when out of way bunker that looms on the right side. bounds is in play off the tee, and there is Over a period of time, I have found that a safe play away from the out of bounds; I have played the hole better by taking choose a target so that the chances of the driver out of play and using a hybrid hitting the ball out of bounds are slim. off the tee to position the ball in play avoiding both the out of bounds and fairway bunker. My strategy also takes into consideration that # 15 is a larger green without a green-side bunker. My strategy off the tee takes the risk of out of bounds out of the equation and puts me in a comfortable position to play this hole and make par most of the time! Of course the long drive up the middle and wedge to the green allows a better opportunity to make birdie. But I prefer the ball “in play” over the ball “Out of Bounds” and adding Two Strokes to my score! Improving your strategy may be the 24 • Tee Time on the Gulf Coast

quickest, easiest way for amateur golfers to lower their scores. Conservative strategy is not the same as optimal strategy. On most holes, choosing an iron off the tee instead of a driver, gives away strokes. Unless there is danger, close to the hole, or the pin location dictates otherwise, data shows that more golfers score better by laying up closer to the hole than by laying back to 80 or 100 yards.

Choosing an optimal target and swinging aggressively can be a better tactic, but consider what gives you the best chance of success: 1) your shot pattern and 2) the hole’s features. Consider several strategic situations and learn how to develop an optimized game plan to shoot lower scores. A golfer’s best strategy is to choose a target that maximizes the chance of success on that hole for his skill level. Improving ones strategy may be an amateurs best and quickest road to a lower score. This series of informative thought was obtained from the book, Every Shot Counts, by Mark Broadie, Gotham Books, 2014. The book relays the insight of using the revolutionary “Strokes Gained Approach” to improve your golf performance and strategy.
