2017 Equipment Review Drivers

Callaway GBB Epic/Sub Zero MSRP: $500.00 The “Club of the Year” in 2017! Callaway hyped the Epic as something special and they delivered. Flexible faces have been all the rage for some time, but Callaway has taken the technology to another level. “Jailbreak” technology is Callaway’s term for two bars inside the head from crown to sole which add stability to the face. The additional stability allows for a face which is 20% thinner than anything Callaway offered last year and also allows the face to flex across a wider area. The results are increased ball speed on all shots! The frame is titanium and the carbon composite crown and sole panels are extremely light. The standard version has a sliding rear weight to adjust for hooks and slices. The Sub Zero has two weights to optimize ball spin. If you haven’t tried the Callaway GBB Epic, then do yourself a favor and hit one soon! 6 • Tee Time on the Gulf Coast

TaylorMade M1 MSRP: $500.00 Great deal of adjustability with 5,800 setting combinations. Carbon composite in the crown and in half of the sole moves the weight lower and deeper so mis-hits don’t lose much speed.

TaylorMade M2 MSRP: $400.00 Carbon composite crown saves weight which is redistributed to keep the CG low. Slot behind the face allows for flexibility and high ball speeds. Lots of pop and very forgiving!

Cobra King F7/F7+ MSRP: $350.00/$400.00 Both models have lots of adjustability and built in technology. The F7 is larger and offers lofts from 9 to 12 degrees. The more compact F7+ plays from 8 to 11 degrees. Adustable weights in the sole also increase or decrease trajectory as needed and allow the player to tweak directional ball flight. Getting Ready to Play! by Rea Schuessler, PGA Professional

There is an old saying around golf courses that goes something like this: “the longest walk in golf is from the practice tee to the first tee”. While I understand the genesis for it, I have never really bought into this way of thinking. If you are one of those that dread that first tee shot or hole hopefully after reading this you will find your attitude might be more optimistic as you head to the first tee! One thing that is important to remember is truly treat your pre-round routine as a warm up. I say that because some feel they have to have everything working on all cylinders on the range to expect positive results on the course. In contrast, many times I have struggled the most on the course after having a wonderful warm up session and vice versa. As I see it, during your pre-round routine you should do your best to get your body loose and relaxed and try not to get overly concerned with the results on the driving range and putting green before the round. Try to give yourself plenty of time, get your mind right and just go through the session. Try not to judge every shot, chip or putt before play. The object is to see how your body is feeling and just do your best to prepare yourself for the day. On tour some hit odd # clubs and some hit even # clubs. Colin Montgomery hits 2 shots with all of his clubs before each tournament round. Just try to create a routine that gets your mind and body ready to go. Below are few key points to remember. 1. If at all possible, arrive in time so you don’t feel rushed on the first tee. 2. Budget time for putting, short game to include a few sand shots and full swing. It is highly recommended you create a consistent timed pre round routine. Sticking to a nice consistent plan before the round will help your mind set as you head to the first tee. 3. If you find yourself running late I feel it is more important to stretch your body and loosen your muscles rather than rush through 4 to 5 quick swings. Maybe just hit a putt or two and try and stay calm and relaxed. Rushing can be disruptive to rhythm and maintaining a nice tempo. Consult with a local PGA Professional if you feel you need help creating a solid pre round routine. It can be invaluable in helping you play your best golf! Rea Schuessler is the Lead Instructor of the Gulf Shores Golf Academy. He has been named “One of the Top Teachers in Alabama” by Golf Digest. Rea can be contacted at (251) 978-1625 or rea@honoursgolf.com. 8 • Tee Time on the Gulf Coast

Fairway Woods Callaway GBB Epic/Sub Zero MSRP: $280.00 Cupface technology produces high ball speed. Hinging around the edges increases flexing across the face. Light carbon crown lowers center of gravity for high flight and low spin.

Titleist 917 F2/F3 MSRP: $320.00 Cylinder weight in the sole can be flipped to promote a draw or fade. Channel behind face promotes face flexibility. F2 is larger/more forgiving. F3 is smaller/more workable.

Tee Time on the Gulf Coast • 11

Tour Edge Exotics XJ1 MSRP: $450.00 Two thirds of the club’s weight is in the tungsten sole. How? The frame is made of a very lightweight titanium alloy. A 12-gram tungsten weight in the heel helps square the club at impact.

Game Improvement Irons

JPX 900 Hot Metal MSRP: $900.00 Steel alloy single-piece casting is used to produce Mizuno’s thinnest face ever. Results rival ball speed of irons with cup face and sole slot technology.

Callaway Steelhead XR MSRP: $800.00 Old meets new. The basic shape of the Steelhead X-14 is paired with a wraparound cupface. Center of gravity is low on medium and short irons. Lots of power here. Cobra F7/F7 One Length MSRP: $800.00 Four different head designs in this progressive set. Center of gravity and face flexibility are altered throughout the set to optimize performance. Available in a onelength option with all irons at a 7-iron length.

Maximum Game Improvement Irons

Callaway Big Bertha OS MSRP: $1,300.00 (8 clubs with graphite) The “exo-cage” alters stiffness throughout the body and allows weight to be placed in the most effective areas. Cup face technology increases ball speed.

Wilson D300 MSRP: $900.00 Urethane-filled holes in the topline and toe which extend into the cavity provide additional room behind impact area so that the face will flex and increase ball speed. Additional weight is placed in the heel and toe for stability.

Tour Edge Hot Launch 2 MSRP: $500.00 Available in all iron, all hybrid, or combo sets. Large heads and low weighting provide forgiveness and make it easy to launch the ball high. Thin face increases ball speed. A steal at this price! 20 • Tee Time on the Gulf Coast

Better Players Irons

Titleist 716 AP2 MSRP: $1,200.00 Tungsten weighting in the heel and toe gives a low center of gravity and reduces shot dispersion on poorly struck shots. Sole is slightly wider than previous models, but with a trailing back edge for crisp turf interaction.

TaylorMade P770 MSRP: $1,200.00 Lots of technology in a sleek design. Forged, carbon steel hosel and face are joined to a 70 gram tungsten sole in the 3 through 7 irons to increase launch and forgiveness.

Mizuno MP-25 MSRP: 1,200.00 Boron-infused carbon steel allow for an extremely thin clubface. That feature along with the slot behind the face produce high ball speeds.

Wedges

Callaway MD3 Milled MSRP: $130.00 3 types of grooves which are dependent on loft to better regulate spin based on shot type. Lower lofts have narrower grooves to reduce spin, higher lofts are wider for more spin.

Cleveland RTX-3 MSRP: $130.00 34 models including both blade and cavity back. Center of gravity is moved toward the middle of the face by shifting weight from the hosel to the clubhead.

Mizuno T7 MSRP: $150.00 Different head sizes, grooves, sole grinds, bounce angles, and toe heights based on lofts. Lower lofts have straighter leading edge for full shots, higher lofts have more rounded leading edge and topline for openface shots.

Titleist Vokey Design SM6 MSRP: $150.00 21 models with 5 sole grinds. Weighting and groove construction change based on loft to optimize distance, trajectory, and spin.

(continued on next page)

Blade Putters

Odyssey O-Works MSRP: $230.00 A soft elastomer insert is used in conjunction with a thin stainless steel mesh insert. Small hinges contract at impact, then launch putts with topspin.

Cleveland Huntinton Beach Collection MSRP: $100.00 Milled face is cut 4 times deeper than normal milled putters which leads to a very soft feel and more ball friction allowing for a nice top roll. A real bargain at this price!

Evnroll ER2 MSRP: $330.00 Grooves are calibrated in a V-shape towards the middle of the club to allow mis-hits to gravitate back to the center. Grooves narrow from the center towards the heel and toe for better energy transfer on mis-hits. 24 • Tee Time on the Gulf Coast

Mallet Putters TaylorMade Spider MSRP: $300.00 Midsize mallet constructed of 13 pieces. Heavy steel which supports a hollow aluminum body equals very high MOI. Two inserts avaiable: Surlyn (softer feel) and milled aluminum (firmer).

Ping Sigma G MSRP: $200.00 Anodized aluminum face is milled at differing depths to create create consistent return of engergy and control distance on mis-hits. Face is supported by a softer material most often used in running shoes.

Odyssey O-Works MSRP: $230.00 Same face system as the blade - a soft elastomer insert with a thin stainless mesh overlayment and small hinges that miniminze skidding and the ball rolling sooner than most putters.

Improve “Your” Swing Plane with Aiming Sticks by Bobby Hall, PGA Professional at Quail Creek Golf Course with his student Kris Johnson of Lakewood GC

My definition of plane as it relates to teaching the golf swing is founded on the simple principle that the golf shaft should point to the ball line or should be parallel to the ball line throughout the swing. Assuming there are no body restrictions, injuries or physical handicaps, this principle allows for all golfers of different heights and body types to apply a repeatable pattern. Please learn “your plane” and don’t try to correct something you don’t need too. The patterns endorsed here are correct and proven. The following steps will help present a pattern for you to practice. Be very slow in the beginning positioning the club at each step. As you practice the patterns of setting the shaft at each step, slowly work your swing into precise easy rhythm. Too fast will reduce your learning curve. Slow and steady precise positioning is more effective. This positive method has helped many students find a better repeatable swing. This method of learning the swing plane I consider geometric in thought, relying on regular lines to guide your shaft. It is most important to get our junior golfers off on the right foot and this pattern is fundamental. #1) Your address position points the shaft of the club at the ball line at address. The ball line runs from horizon to horizon through the ball to your intended target. #2) As the club swings, back in the take away the shaft should follow the ball line to the horizon. In the picture notice how Kris uses the aiming stick and his driver shaft to work upwards and the club stays on plane. This allows the club head and shaft to now become parallel to the both the ground and most importantly parallel to the ball line. #3) As the club shaft leaves the parallel position and the wrists begin to hinge the club up-ward, the shaft shall remain pointed at the ball line. The “butt” or the grip shall point to the ball line. Kris’s shaft is now pointed down the aiming stick. If someone feels that this is to low or flat, then you do not understand plane. His shaft is pointed at “His Plane Line.” Reference Matt Kuchar on the PGA Tour vs. Colin Montgomery, both different, both on plane and both proven to succeed. #4) As the shaft is positioned at the top of the swing the shaft must now become parallel again to the ground and to the ball line. His shaft is now pointed to his intended target.

#5) One’s timing must rely on the left hip and body weight beginning to move to the target with weight transferring to the left foot. The right knee begins to transfer left; the core muscles of the body begin to turn to the target and we are off to the races! There are many fascinating firing mechanisms going off in the brain and the body during this moment but to simplify and stay on task it is your responsibility to point the shaft to the ball line or allow it to become parallel to the ball line. This is where you must keep it simple and allow your body and hand path to stay with the geometry. When you cross the line, you’re asking for trouble! The “butt” of the club or grip must return to pointing the shaft at the ball line. Notice how Kris’s club shaft is pointed down the aiming stick remaining on the plane to the ball line. #6) Working down to impact Kris is using the aiming stick to guide the shaft and club head path returns “underneath” the aiming stick, towards the ball. The shaft should now become parallel to the ball line and to the ground keeping with geometry. #7) “Release” happens with part body rotation and par forearm rotation. The radius and ulna bones play a part in the timing of the clubface becoming square to the ball line. Those who seek the exact definition should watch You Tube video of James Leitze, DPane explanations, which are most fascinating and informative. Kris has the ability to straighten the right arm which helps his club face becomings quare to the ball line and impact improving solid contact. #8) Kris has shifted his weight to the left heel. Left leg straightens. Club shaft remains on plane; posture and balance assure proper form. I really like the fact that his right knee is” underneath” his body weight allowing great posture and spine angle tilt. Accompany that with a very positive attitude and the need to succeed and Kris becomes a favorite competitor and great partner to have in any Four-Ball! This information is nothing new. It is simple geometry applied to physical body rotation. I watch a lot of high school students with their video phones trying to help each other on the range. They should have knowledge of swing geometry before guessing at what may be too up-right or too flat. Knowing your plane line is effective to establishing your goals. Everyone has physical challenges they must overcome to better ball striking. The last three points of this article are the most important: 1) Please seek the help of a qualified instructor. 2) Please seek the help of a qualified instructor. 3) Please seek the help of a qualified instructor. I think that says enough. Grab a stick and let’s all get on “D-plane boss”!

Hello Friends, (Now just pretend that was just spoken in Jim Nance’s voice) and you are instantly transported to the soothing medley of the Master’s song and hours of commercial free golf. Oh yes the Masters, the first Major of the year. I get pretty excited about Augusta National and Bobby Jones’s Infamous Tournament and just as I try to use my Golf Etiquette on the golf course when I am playing, I try to use my Culinary Etiquette when preparing a dish during such a prestigious event such as the Masters. So, break out the Pimento Cheese recipe as well as my Egg Salad recipe (given to y’all last year) and pull out the wallet for this recipe below because it is a classic. Sit back, relax and let the grazing begin.
