Golf Ball Review: OnCore Elixr by Joey Johnson

The OnCore Elixr is a “tour” caliber golf ball using what the company calls “triphase architechture that combines proprietary chemical blends and advanced material elements to create the ultimate radical departure from traditional solid golf ball”. rubber core construction in nearly 30 The Elixr features include perimeter years. The Caliber is and 80 compression ball with a surlyn cover.

The guys at OnCore learned a lot and had some degree of success with their early versions. Currently, the line includes three balls: Caliber, Avant, and Elixr.

“The ELIXR is our most advanced ball to date. We built a ball for golfers who are ready to take their game to the next level. We combined a polybutadiene rubber core, metal-infused ionomer mantle and cast urethane cover to create one of the most exceptional tour balls on the market. Our trifecta of advanced materials provide extraordinary distance, spin, control and feel off the face of the club.”

The Avant is “for the player that wants OnCore Golf was started by two young phenomenal distance, with a super soft entrepreneurs who wanted to make golf feel. The Caliber features a hollow metal core. There were a number of challenges from other companies, but it was deemed to be “conforming” by the USGA. From OnCore: “The Caliber is the most 6 • Tee Time on the Gulf Coast

Performance The OnCore Elixr is consistently long with the driver and irons. It routinely carried a couple of yards longer than the competition. Driver spin is relatively low, but you get plenty of spin on iron and pitch shots into the green. The trajectory was typical of a premium ball and very consistent. Durability There were no issues with durability. You can expect to get several rounds with the Elixr with no significant scuffing or wear.

Review When it’s all said and done, all golfers have two questions about a golf ball. How does it feel? How does it perform? The answers to both of these questions will come with a certain amount of subjectivity. With that said, it’s hard to imagine any golfer not being impressed with both the feel and performance of the OnCore Elixr.

Although I had heard of OnCore for a number of years, I knew very little about the company until trying the Elixr. The results were impressive. Without a doubt, the OnCore Elixr rivals any other ball on the market today. For more information about OnCore Golf, or to purchase a dozen Elixr balls, visit www.oncoregolf.com. Retail Price is $40.00, but the company is currently offering them at $35.00 per dozen with additional quantity discounts. OnCore also sells through golf retailers and green grass facilities.

Feel The best way that I can describe the Elixr is SOLID. At impact, the ball doesn’t feel hard or soft. It just feels right. Off the driver, irons, chipping, and putting the Elixr has the great feel that you’d expect from a premium urethane cover ball. Tee Time on the Gulf Coast • 7

Pointers From the Pros Here are a few tips that you can work on this winter and throughout the year to keep your game at its best!

Practice with an alignment guide! A properly positioned alignment guide will help you set up square to your intended target, fine tune ball position from club to club, and significantly improve the quality of limited practice time. From scratch to beginner, ever level of player can benefit from utilizing this basic practice tool! - Andy Ray, PGA Director of Golf, TimberCreek

One of my philosophies in teaching is that I like all my students -- senior or junior golfer, male or female, to have a great set-up position. A good grip, whether interlocking or overlapping, good posture, ball position, and alignment are imperative in helping the golfer reach his or her full potential. Having a good “fundamental set-up” gives me the best opportunity to help the student make a great, athletic golf swing, without having to make compensating moves. I encourage my students to register for a 3-lesson program, so we can get the student on a regular practice program, best suited to reach his or her goals. -David Musial, PGA GM, GlenLakes

Now that we are into the off season and we might not have time to get out since the days are short. The following tip/exercise might help! Spend up to 5 minutes every day in front of a mirror practicing proper posture with a club in your hand. Place feet approximately hip width apart (inside of feet on outside of hip line) and looking down knees should be in line with balls of feet ( looking down if knees cover shoes you are most likely flexing knees too much). Weight should feel evenly distributed. Bend forward from hip sockets (not belt line). If weight feels toe heavy you have bent too far forward and vice versa. If you feel like you are on heels you are possibly standing too tall which is unusual. One final note: once you feel you are in good posture allow arms to hang naturally from shoulders and if these alignments are good your hands should be just about underneath your chin. -Ray Schuessler, PGA Lead Instructor, Schuessler Golf Academy 8 • Tee Time on the Gulf Coast

Putter Review: MLA Tour Classic by Joey Johnson

MLA Golf, headquartered in Switzerland, expanded into the US market in 2016. The company is primarily known for its putters, which feature what they call the Multi Line-detector Activation alignment technology. MLA putter styles include both blade and mallets. They sent us the MLA Tour Classic to test. The MLA Tour Classic is a blade-style putter with a double bend shaft, making it face-balanced. From MLA: The overall weight distribution makes it perfectly balanced and the soft touch gives great distance control. To fully support your different needs the Tour Classic has an interchangeable weight system to benefit from, along with the world leading U.S. patented perceptual alignment technology. Maximize your performance with this 100% full milled precision instrument engineered in Sweden. The MLA Tour Classic feels and looks good. With a head weight of 384 grams, it is definitely on the heavy side, but it is nicely balanced. The milled and grooved face makes for a nice soft feel. Adjustable weights of 5, 10, and 15 grams are included so head weight can be adjusted. The alignment aid is what makes all MLA putters very unique. The theory behind the technology is rather complex, and the alignment aid gives MLA putters a very unique look, but it really does seem to work. The fact is, most of us can use a little help lining up our putts. The putter is not always aimed where we think it is. MLA putters are designed to help with that and it worked for me. Quite simply, it’s easier to aim the putter correctly and get the ball rolling on the correct line. Who wouldn’t want a putter that makes it easier to line up, feels good, and puts a nice top roll on the ball? To check out the complete line of MLA putters, visit www.mlagolf.com. Prices vary be model. The MLA Tour Classic that we tested retails for $299.00.

Quail Creek Says Goodbye to Bobby Hall by Joey Johnson

Bobby Hall, PGA Director of Golf at Quail Creek, recently announce his retirement from the City of Fairhope effective December 31, 2017. Bobby has been at Quail Creek since 2005 and has been a member of the PGA of American for over 29 years. During that time, Bobby has worked diligently with golfers of all skill levels to help them improve their games, to organize groups and events for them to be a part of, and to provide a fun atmosphere in which everyone can enjoy the game. One of Bobby’s lasting legacies is “The Bullpen”, which he started and through his efforts the Quail Creek MGA has grown to be the largest in the area. The MGA conducts “The Bullpen” twice each week; on Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings. It is not uncommon for 40 or more players to participate on Wednesdays with over 100 often showing up for the Saturday morning game. “There’s a game for everybody at Quail Creek”, Hall said. “Our leagues have been very important, the men’s, ladies’, the retirees from the Nix Center. That’s what’s given me the most pride, is for everybody to have fun here at Quail Creek”. Bobby has always gone above and beyond to grow the game and to help all golfers enjoy themselves. Bobby Hall has been one of the most popular golf professionals on the Gulf Coast for many years. His career has been one of dedication, professionalism, leadership, integrity, and good nature. He will be genuinely missed by his peers, friends, and Quail Creek patrons. I know that everyone who knows Bobby joins me in thanking him and wishing him nothing but the best!

Interview With Luke Jones, Author of “The Prodigy” by Joey Johnson

I recently sat down with first-time novelist Luke Jones to talk about his newly published book, The Prodigy. Luke lives in Tuscaloosa and is originally from “The Literary Capital of the South” Monroeville, Alabama. So, tell us a little about The Prodigy. The book is about a kid in the early 70s who is a somewhat of a golf phenom in South Texas. He basically disappeared off the face of the earth and nobody remembers exactly what happened to him. A sports editor in Dallas knows the basics of what happens, but not the details. So, he sends his best sports reporter to south Texas to get the story from the retiring caddie master at a snobby country club. The caddie master knows the whole story and wants the truth to come out. What made you decide to write a book? About 22 years ago I was on the road traveling and selling golf equipment and a story came to me while I was riding down the road. For my own amusement I decided to type it out and three months later I had the original manuscript. Playing golf for 58 years now, I figure that I know a little about the game. I had the ending of the book in my mind and saw it playing out like a movie and then I thought; now how do I get there from here? What made you pick golf as a theme for the book? I’ve been playing golf since I was about six years old and probably know more about that subject than any other. Is the book just for golfers? Not at all. The book is mostly about relationships, fraud, deception, and hidden truths. I had a cross section of people and demographics read the book before I published it and the feedback was good from people whether they knew anything about golf or not. I know that you had a couple of people who inspired you to publish your book. Tell us about them. An old friend of mine in Monroeville, Lawrence Gulley, wrote a book called (continued on next page)

20 • Tee Time on the Gulf Coast

“ Cora Jean”. If he hadn’t been successful with it I probably would have never published mine. My original manuscript was lost, so I re-wrote it again about a year and a half ago. The basic story stayed the same, but I had to add a lot of detail to make it an actual novel. My now 95 year old father retired when he was 74 and went back to school to study journalism because the Monroe Journal asked him to be a county historian. He still writes and his written four books and is in the process of finishing up the History of Monroe County. He’s also finishing up his memoirs on his time in WWII in Patton’s Third Army. Did you ever get writer’s block? No. Only when picking out some of the character names. What’s it been like to have your first book published? It was very surreal to see my book online for sale and when my hardback and paperback proofs came to the house that was a very surreal moment. Are you going to write another book? Yes. I’m getting ready to start on the second one now. This one is a murder mystery. I already have the ending in my head now I have to figure out how to get there. So, how can everyone read The Prodigy? Hardcover, paperback, and online versions are available at Amazon, Smashwords, Barnes & Noble, and Author House. If anyone would like an inscribed copy, they can email me at lukesnovels@gmail.com Publishers Note: The Prodigy is a very good read and I definitely recommend it, whether you play golf or not. It is full of suspense and keeps the reader guessing right up to the last page. For links to purchase for the retailers listed above you can visit our website: www.teetimeonthegulfcoast.com. Golf Resolutions For 2018 Some of us make resolutions each year, some of us don’t. If you do, here are some you might want to consider.

1. Take an extra club.

Yes, we’re talking to you. Aren’t you tired of coming up short? Come on....hit one over the back one time just for fun!

2. Play ready golf!

We all love the game, but no one wants to trudge through a five hour round. If everyone does their part to be ready we’ll all have a better time.

3. Work on your short game. The quickest way to knock a few strokes off your game is to get better on and around the green. Spend just 30 minutes per week on your short game and you’ll see results.

4. Work with a PGA Professional.

Even if you really know your swing a second site of eyes can really help. A trained set of eyes is even better.

5. Set Goals.

Want to break 70, 80, 90, or 100 for the first time? Lower your handicap by 3 strokes? Win a tournament? Come out ahead on your side bets? Whatever you want to do, write it down and keep track of your progress.

6. Take a buddies golf trip.

Get away for a few days with the boys. Play golf all day, cards at night, good food, cold beer. Life is short. Enjoy it!

7. Play like an amateur.

This one isn’t about score. This is about strategy. Forget distance. Focus on hitting fairways. We know about that one that you hit 306 yards 12 years ago. Sure it was downhill and the wind was blowing 25 MPH at your back. That’s OK. By the way....it hit the cart path....twice. And that flop shot? It ain’t workin’, pal.

8. Repair Ball Marks, Replace Divots. We all have an obligation to take care of our courses. Please do your part.

9. Get in shape.

Break out those dumbells, stretch every day, maybe walk nine holes occasionally. We’re not getting any younger.

“A Quick Nine” with David Musial

by Joey Johnson David Musial is the PGA General Manager and Director of Golf at GlenLakes Golf Club in Foley, AL. He came to GlenLakes in April of 2015 and was previously the Head Professional at Hoover CC and the Director of Golf at Heron Lakes in Mobile. I met with David recently and asked him a few questions. Hope you enjoy getting to know a little more about David Musial. 1

What is your advice for someone just starting out in golf? To take instruction from a PGA professional so that you can develop a basis of fundamentals and practice time. That is one reason that I offer a 3-lesson program. It allows us to develop a program and to chart your improvement and get the most out of your game.

2

Who is your favorite golfer? Phil Mickelson. We’re the same age, we both have three kids, and he’s still able to compete at 47 years old. And, I was always an Arnold Palmer fan.

3

4

Who is the best golfer of all time? Jack Nicklaus. His overall record in the majors speaks for itself. Not just how many times he won, but how many times he came in second and third. He was so dominant for so long. What is your favorite golf course? I’ve been fortunate enough to play a lot of different great courses, but one of the most beautiful pieces of property and great layouts is Shoal Creek. I like Jack Nicklaus golf courses. For the average golfer he gives you a chance to get the ball in play off the tee and the holes narrow as you get to the green.

24 • Tee Time on the Gulf Coast

5

6

7

8

9

What is the course that you’d most like to play? I’d love to play Pebble Beach and Augusta National. I’d definitely say Augusta National. What’s your favorite golf movie? I guess I’d have to say Tin Cup. Just about every time it comes on I usually find myself watching the rest of it. What do you like to do for fun? Spending time with my kids whether we play golf, or basketball, or go fishing. I just love to spend time with my kids. What advice do you have for someone thinking of becoming a club professional? If you love the game and love being around the game it is a great profession. The sacrifice is that your hours and holidays and weekends are spent at work. But, I knew from when I first starting playing that this is what I wanted to do. What are some of the events coming up at GlenLakes in 2018? We’re going to host the National Junior College Division II Championship in May and the AGA Junior Championship in July. We’re also excited that most of the local amateur tours play here now and have committed to play in 2018. All of that is a testament to the condition of the golf course, to our superintendent and his crew, and to our owners who have really been committed to giving us the resources to have the best golf course conditions.

Publisher’s Note: For more information about GlenLakes Golf Club, or to schedule a tee time, visit www.glenlakesgolf.com. GlenLakes is one of the best golf values on the Gulf Coast. The course is consistently in excellent condition and is one of the most enjoyable courses to play in the area. I highly recommend it! To schedule a lesson with David Musial, email musialgolf@yahoo.com. Individual lessons are $60.00 and David’s 3 Lesson Program is just $100.00. That’s a great deal! Tee Time on the Gulf Coast • 25

The Golfing Gourmet

Black Eyed Pea Soup Wi t h Co lla r d G r e e n s & Co n e c u h S a u s a g e

Hello once again to all my Golfing Foodies. As we get into the New Year we reflect on the past one and I hope that all your golfing goals were achieved and you were able to get out during these winter months, dust those clubs off, and enjoy a quick round. As in a round of golf, in life we need a little luck and blessing to get us thru tough times. For me, time honored tradition’s in food bring such great comfort and perspective. Many of these traditions have become a very big part of my life, especially during the holidays. As I grew up in Ohio, one of traditions for the New Year was to have a meal consisting of Sauerkraut and Pork. As I moved down south (now for over 30 years) that tradition switched to black eyed peas, collard greens and a type of pork sausage. I have had this combination every which way but would like to share with you a recipe that has become a staple of the Spybey house. I hope this simple meal begins a tradition in your house and brings luck and comfort to you and your family in the New Year.

Ingredients: 2 cups chopped yellow onion 2 cups baby carrots 1 cup chopped celery 1 heaping tbsp. of minced garlic 2 sprigs fresh thyme Little bit of olive oil 2 pounds of sliced Conecuh Sausage 6 cups good Chicken Stock 1 (28 ounce) can of Chopped tomatoes 2 cans (15 .5oz) Black-eyed Peas, rinsed and drained (you can use your own Peas but make sure they have soaked overnight and are ready for cooking) 8 cups of chopped thoroughly cleaned Collard Greens (preferably stems removed) Salt and pepper to taste. 28 • Tee Time on the Gulf Coast

Directions: In a large Dutch oven and a little bit of oil. Add Sausage, onions, carrot and celery. Cook until some of the fat is released for the sausage and vegetables begin to soften (about 7 minutes) add thyme and garlic gently stirring. Add Tomatoes and Chicken broth and bring to a boil. Cook for about 5 minutes then reduce heat to a simmer. Add Peas and Collards. Gently stir and then let simmer for about 15-20 minutes. This goes great with Corn bread and tastes even better the next day when reheated so you can make it ahead of time if you would like.
