Chasing Par in Paradise

Peninsula Golf & Racquet Club by Joey Johnson

“Peninsula is my best work...God left us a golf course just waiting for someone to grow grass on it”. - Earl Stone, Golf Course Architect That’s high praise from the prolific architect of more than 40 golf courses, quite a few right here on the Gulf Coast. Peninsula Golf & Racquet Club is located on the Fort Morgan Peninsula between Mobile Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. The property is adjacent to the Bon Secour Wildlife Preserve, providing a setting that is filled with an abundance of natural scenery and wildlife.

As you might imagine based on its name, water comes into play on all nine hole on The Lakes. The fairways are fairly generous, though, and overall the greens have fewer undulations than The Cypress and The Marsh. As always, the three nines are in excellent condition and very fun to play. There are never any distractions at Peninsula, just top quality golf in a pristine setting.

Before or after your round, make sure to enjoy a meal in the Peninsula Restaurant. The Distance Tease

by Rea Schuessler, PGA Professional “I need to hit it longer.” When I ask each golfer what they need to work on this is always in the top 3. As I try to learn more about everyone’s individual games it becomes very clear that while distance can be a great advantage if you can manage accuracy it should not be at the top of the list of what will help lower their scores. The top 3 areas of improvement most of the time is getting the ball in play off of the tee, wedge play and putting. The last time I checked when our scores are posted we don’t enter driving distance, we enter total score. In order to play a hole properly our approach shots are much more reliable from the fairway than the rough or trees, so make it a priority to learn how to get in play even if it means sacrificing a few yards in distance. Numerous times I have encouraged my students to tee off with a 3 wood or hybrid when they are struggling with the driver and they report back with lower scores. You may consider trying a driver with higher loft as this can really help find more fairways. The wedge game is of utmost importance as in this magazine I have stated the best players in the world only hit around 65% of their greens in regulation on average, so if we are being honest how many should we expect to be on in regulation. A reliable wedge and short game is a must if you want to turn bogeys into pars! And then finally the putter is the only club we use on every hole, so a determination to become a better putter is a must if you want to shoot lower scores. Most 3 putts are a result of poor distance control so focus on respecting the speed of the greens you are playing on any given day, then get better at making your 3 to 5 footers and you will be well on your way to posting better scores! I hope this helps and enjoy the challenge of this great game!

Research into EFT: Emotional Freedom Technique by Bobby Hall, PGA

I dislike being negative, but my putting has been suspect and I have used about as many putting training aids known to man. I have played on not so good greens and good greens and “great” greens. When in competition, we all must play the same greens, good or bad. As for myself my overall stats lead to 29-34 putts per round and poor scoring. So, I decided to take the mental approach and have found some success with EFT. The article attached is by Dr. Brent Thomson and is informative to this theory of relieving stress and eliminating mental breakdowns during your game. I am still experimenting with Emotional Freedom Technique’s but I do have this to share after beginning my study into emotional stability during play. · Saturday 9/16/2017 Quail Creek Golf Course: 6 birdies and 6 Bogies; even par 72. · Sunday 9/17/2017 Gulf Shores Golf Club: 5 Birdies; 2 over 74 By following the article, I was able to keep my mental stability throughout the round and focus on myself and staying in the moment. As Tiger Woods would Say,” I have to get out of my own way sometimes to make a great round”. We over think, we over analyze and we put to much pressure on ourselves. These techniques work. Often referred to as “Psychological acupressure”, EFT works by releasing blockages within the energy system which are the source of emotional intensity and discomfort. EFT treatment involves the use of fingertips rather than needles to tap on the end points of energy meridians that are situated just beneath the surface of the skin. I encourage you to look at all of the information the Internet provides on EFT! Here’s to better game management, better putting and great self-control. The following is an article by Brent Thompson, PhD summarizing his interview with EFT Founder Gary Craig. Keep tapping! 22 • Tee Time on the Gulf Coast

Keep Tapping By Brent Thomson, PhD My work setting is an exercise and personal fitness training studio in the metropolitan area of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota. At this location I have a private practice where I see counseling clients (children, adolescents, and adults), as well as interact with professional trainers. As a result of this collaboration, I have received many sports referrals through the last four years. Without fail, EFT has proven to be a foundation skill for relieving/eliminating mental and physical stress for athletes. One such referral was my first professional golf client. This proved to be a very rewarding and reinforcing referral as it resulted in this individual winning the Minnesota PGA Senior State Match Play tournament in 2001, of which he attributed his win mainly due to using EFT both before and during the tournament. I also recently worked with a club professional in Minnesota who made the cut to participate in the 2002 U.S. Open at Hazeltine Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota, largely due to EFT. I would like to relate in this article how I worked with these golfers and what areas we worked on. Hopefully, this will provide some useful information for you to use in your own training efforts. The problem that usually needs to be worked on first is to expand one’s comfort zone. Gary has mentioned this in previous posts, and he is right. We have a tendency to build in lots of unconscious self-limits and self-defeating beliefs that certainly can sabotage our performances. GC COMMENT: Amen! One of the most important pieces to the sports improvement puzzle is to widen the athlete’s comfort zone. They must mentally “see” themselves at the new level before they will achieve it consistently. EFT can be used to reduce these limiting mental barriers much more efficiently than conventional sports psychology. BRENT CONTINUES: The way that I addressed this issue with both golfers was to say something on the order of, “Even though I may have barriers to shooting consistently at par or lower, especially in tournaments, I deeply and completely accept myself.” We would continue doing EFT till it registered 0 on a 0-10 intensity scale. I then instructed them on using an appropriate choice statement, such as, “I choose to see myself being confident, relaxed, and powerful on the golf course at all times, especially in tournaments.” I would use a 0-10 scale (with 10 indicating total belief in the statement) in order to find out how much they believed that the choice statement was true for them. With this baseline, I would then have them repeat the choice statement three times (continued on next page)

(continued from previous page)

at each tapping point, starting at the eyebrow point and finishing at the underarm point. I asked them to take their time saying their statements while utilizing imagery to “see themselves becoming” the statement on the golf course. We would then take a 0-10 rating after each round to see how much they now believed in their choice statement. We would continue this process until they felt a 9 or 10 on the choice statement. I then turned my attention to individual negative feelings (both physical and emotional) that were getting in the way of peak performance. These feelings usually revolve around the following: frustration, anxiety, fears, and physical tensions/ pain. More specifically, common issues are the following: fear of failure (making mistakes), fear of embarrassing themselves, fear of playing in front of a large gallery of spectators, physical tension or pain in the muscles while playing (specify where), frustration after missing a shot, losing focus, anxiety about hitting the distance, mental tension (fuzzy thinking or confusion), and disappointment when playing poorly. GC COMMENT: Although worthwhile results can be gained by tapping on these issues, I think even more efficiency is available if these broader issues are broken down into SPECIFIC EVENTS. An example might be...”The time I felt like a failure when XXX happened at age 10 in Mrs. Johnson’s third grade class.” These SPECIFIC EVENTS are the foundation under the broader issues and thus their precise removal can add value to the process. BRENT CONTINUES: We then proceeded to “chop down those emotional and physical trees” until they no longer presented a problem (0 on the 0-10 intensity

24 • Tee Time on the Gulf Coast

scale). At this point, I would again turn to writing out a coping self-statement for each emotional or physical tree that we chopped down in order to affirm and build the positive. There’s an old saying in cognitive therapy, “what you choose to focus on, you tend to energize.” EFT does such an outstanding job on chopping down the emotional and physical trees, it really helps smooth the way for planting new behavior and thinking choices and makes it much more likely for these behaviors and new beliefs to be realized. An example of this would be, “I choose to see myself maintaining my focus during my round and at the same time remaining relaxed.” We would then continue to plant the positive until this registered a 9 or 10. Finally, I would turn my attention to any problems with specific aspects of the game and start to tap them down. Examples of potential targets would be: lack of confidence with using woods, problems with using irons, problems with putting, problems in using the sand wedge, and difficulty playing in poor weather conditions. An example would be, “Even though I’m having a lot of problems with putting lately, I deeply and completely accept myself.” I would then proceed to set up a 0-10 intensity scale and continue to work on it until it was down to a 0. I would then select a choice statement, such as, “I choose to see myself draining my putts with consistency.” We would take an initial 0-10 baseline on how much they would believe the statement until the statement registered a consistent 10. Brent Thomson, Ph.D., L.P.

The Golfing Gourmet Flounder P i c c a t a

Hello all of my Golfing Foodies. Well, hopefully everyone made it thru summer without melting and are looking forward to a beautiful fall filled with football, golf and sweater vests. After reviewing my recently received Genealogy DNA test confirming that I have approximately 19% Italian/Sicilian blood I felt compelled to share one of my favorite Italian inspired dishes with a little bit of a down South flare to it. Behold the Piccata (simply translated to - sliced, sautéed and served with a butter, wine, lemon sauce) This dish will send your guests over the edge as they say “ Sono abbagliato da te” Ha! Until next time….Addio! • 4 flounder filets (decent size) • Freshly ground black pepper • Good Sea or Kosher Salt • 2 large eggs – (plus 2 tbsp. water) • 2/3 cup seasoned bread crumbs • 3 tbsp. olive Oil • 3 tbsp. good butter • Juice of 2 lemons • 1/4 cup dry white wine • 1/2 cup good chicken broth • 2 tbsp. capers, drained • Sliced lemon, for serving • ¼ cup chopped Italian fresh parsley – Post cooking Preheat Oven to around 225 degrees (This is going to be to keep fish filets warm while you prepare the sauce) In a glass shallow bowl beat eggs and water together. Season Fish with Salt and Pepper. Dip Fish into Egg Mixture removing any excess and dip and coat both sides with bread crumbs. As a good buddy tells me “then you get your grease hot” let’s say about medium high. Add butter and Olive oil into large sauté pan (large enough to cook all four filets at once) If you don’t have one – GET ONE! Once butter and Olive Oil are hot (not smoking – if butter is turning brown, turn the heat down) add the fish filets. Cook on each side for about 2-3 minutes on each side. Remove fish into oven safe dish and place fish in oven while you make the sauce – If you need a little break that is. The secret to this dish is to prepare the sauce right before serving time. 28 • Tee Time on the Gulf Coast

In same sauté pan you did the fish, ( DO NOT REMOVE ANY DRIPPINGS) bring the heat back up. Add the lemon juice, wine and chicken stock and bring to a boil and reduce by half. When reduced by half, add the capers and cook for 1 minute. I sometimes add a little extra bit of butter at this time. Salt and Pepper the sauce to taste. Salt compliments Citrus (remember that) Platter up your fish from the oven, Add a good spoon or two full of sauce on top. Garnish with some fresh Chopped Italian Parsley and fresh Lemon Wheels or peel!

Fun and Easy. Please Enjoy!
