The coffee and tea market consists of the sale of coffee and tea by entities (organizations, traders, and partner companies) that produce roasted coffee, blended tea, coffee and tea concentrate, herbal teas, coffee extracts, aromas, and syrups. Companies in the coffee and tea industry process raw materials for coffee roasting, tea blending, coffee, and tea concentrates, herbal teas, coffee extracts, flavorings, and syrups, package them, and distribute them through various distribution channels to both individual customers and commercial establishments.

The main types of coffee and tea are coffee and tea. Coffee is a brewed beverage made from roasted coffee beans, the beans of certain flowering plants of the genus Coffea, and the berries of certain flowering plants of the genus Coffea. According to Business Wire’s “Coffee and Tea Global Market Report, 2020-30: COVID-19 Impact and Recovery,” the overall coffee and tea market is expected to grow from $142.1 billion in 2019 to $148.5 billion in 2020, which is the annual growth rate. 4.6 percent.

The rate is actually low due to the coronavirus shutdown, but the industry should return to an average growth rate of 9.0 percent annually to reach $191.1 billion in 2023. Entrepreneurs in all fields of coffee and tea services can proactively plan for business success by leveraging industry statistics and beverage trends for 2022.

THE CHAI WALAH

Drinking chai is a culture in India, with that traditional sweet milk tea, Indians find a comforting feeling, and it inspires a sense of identity in them. Tea in India is part of mundane lives and connects people to their heritage and is considered a symbol of hospitality. The tea market in India is estimated to see tremendous growth in the period between 2022-2027 and the estimation is based on the consumption of over 1.10 million tons of tea in the year 2020.

The pop-up chai carts dotted around the streets of South India, THE CHAI WALAH (formerly known as THE CHAI WALLAH, which they now spelled differently to ease the brand’s further growth in the Middle East) offers Truly Handmade Artisanal Teas.

THE CHAI WALAH is founded by Faisal Yousaf aka Mr: Chai Walah, while he was living in England, where he worked as a certified Barista in the specialty coffee industry and ran an independent coffee roastery in trendy East London. His love affair with caffeine-filled Coffee, Tea, passion for spices, and herbs, his Indian heritage, and nostalgia for morning chai rituals he used to have in his childhood back in India led him to experiment with chai to find roots back in India.

Coming back home after being an expat for so long and gallivanting around, he was inspired by his travels through hidden tea rooms, vibrant night markets, highland plantations, and nomadic tents, where he discovered real tea. In these distant lands, where traditional recipes are handed down from generation to generation, the knowledge of spices and preparations lived on for centuries. he missed all that since being back and could not find anything similar, so

he brought all that tea knowledge home to bring those old flavors to the new world which led to the humble beginnings of THE CHAI WALAH from a custombuilt market cart in a backwater town called Alleppey in Southern India.

THE CHAI WALAH is exceptional for its use of allnatural & pure ingredients, whether it is the Assam Tea or spices they use in the preparation of their brew, which comes directly from small farmers across the country. THE CHAI WALAH is bringing all-natural, and pure old flavors to new India.

When the SwiftnLift team had an interview with Faisal Yousaf about his venture known as THE CHAI WALAH and how it started, where he envisions it, and its impact and effect on India, Faisal gave some great answers. Here is a list of questions & answers from an interview session that the magazine had with Faisal and how enthusiastically and excitedly he answered those questions about this exceptional yet traditional chai business he started up in India with a twist.

Tell us about how “THE CHAI WALAH” came into existence.

THE CHAI WALAH started back in 2018 in India when I came back from my international travels. Earlier I was in England working in the coffee industry, I missed having chai there and the nostalgia of morning rituals of waking up to drink the hot cuppa and at that time not knowing how to make a cup of tea. So, I started experimenting with making tea to connect with my roots and while doing so I came up with several recipes for chai. I thought of letting people know about all these recipes and thus commercializing this idea by opening a chai shop. I came back to India in 2017 and in a year, I went along with my idea and started ‘THE CHAI WALAH’. My initial plan was to get into E-commerce selling my blends online, but it required a lot of skills and investments for packaging, marketing, and establishing, but I was lacking all that. So, I went on to brew my blends in a chai cart to introduce the brand and our blends, which was the smartest thing I’ve ever done in my life as I’ve been able to create revenue and much-needed cash flow from day one on such low investment and it helped further growth of the business.

How and why did you call it a ‘Pop-Up’ chai cart?

Because the first model I launched with THE CHAI WALAH was a market cart, a makeshift cart model which we generally see on the streets of India. The concept came from many inspirations from my travel around the world and I have seen people do different things like a van and food carts, so, the thought of having a cart of four wheels with a platform, which can be ridden like a bicycle and designing a stylish version of the street carts often seen in India came to my mind and I went along with it.

I used the combination of black and white colors for my carts, which is something unique and people often questioned this by saying why do you paint your business cart with the color of a coffin, but I went with my instincts and now I can see vendors getting remodeled to a black color and it feels good to see that I inspired that. The cart is mobile and can reach any part of a city very easily, that’s why I call it a pop-up.

Approximately how many types of tea/chai do you make?

We have developed 287 chai recipes so far, and currently, we are brewing around 50 of those recipes. All of these are in-house blends, and we change the offerings according to the season.

On your website, it’s written- ‘Serve a hygienic cup of tea’. Why do you think hygiene is part to be mentioned separately in India?

I believe in Differentiate or Die. When I was starting up, being a very ambitious person I set goals in my mind to differentiate ourselves from others and revolutionize the way how India drinks chai in the street, to be able to achieve that hygiene and provide great customer service as our core focus, as well as the quality of our offerings and we, have been super creative with it… Street side businesses lacked all that. As you know the chai shops in India, how they use milk and tap water, and sugar and the way they handle it. All these differences create a wave and inspired more and more people to follow our path and started copying the way how we do business. That’s when we started franchising our business model to like-minded individuals to grow our business faster while at the same time providing aspiring entrepreneurs and young people an opportunity to get to their first successful business in their local community at a very low investment.

So, since the beginning, I have prioritized hygiene, this is something I loved abroad, especially in the food industry where hygiene is something we lack in India. The aim of ‘THE CHAI WALAH’ is to provide a hygienic and affordable cup of quality chai on the go, price matching your neighborhood chai shop. We only use quality ingredients, as organic as possible which come directly from small farmers and the upper mountains of India. This direct buying all helps the farmers, to ensure

this we follow fair trade policies by working with a fairtrade association that has approximately 300 farmers the association.

What is your position and responsibility at THE CHAI WALAH?

Currently, I work as the Founder and CEO of the company. Now my focus is to expand the company to the Middle-East region and beyond, where we have promoters & investors from Qatar, Oman, and UAE, and we are currently in talks for Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. We are planning to launch ‘THE CHAI WALAH’ in Qatar’s capital Doha just a week before FIFA kicks in!

What kind of challenges or opportunities do you face in running this business?

In India, opportunities are endless, we just have to find the right “Market in the Gap”. Don’t look for the gap in the market, but the other way around. There are plenty of opportunities for setting up a business in India, even in the chai sector, India is a land of opportunities but spotting it is the most difficult part but if you look thru, you will be able to spot them and in other sectors also there are greater opportunities. When it comes to challenges, that is what drives me, every day we hustle and face a lot of challenges. In our business we face many challenges, if I name them, it is mainly the lack of professionalism & punctuality. Time is money, it is very valuable, and people need to understand that.

WALAH

The price point is one thing, it is affordable to everybody, and the second thing is the ingredients that we use, which are organic, and we know where they come from, we make sure that no pesticides go inside while farming those ingredients. We also use a hashtag on social media to spread this message #WhatGoesInMatters, because if I don’t put something in my mouth, I don’t want my customers to have it.

That’s how we stand out in this business, we are focusing on expanding and growing the brand but at the end of the day, it is not about money but about serving a good cup of tea, money comes as a by-product if you follow your true passion. Currently, we are investing heavily in improving customer experience while they visit any of our outlets or virtually by enabling a lot of tech into the business and interact with the customers directly as the brand itself is an individual by shortly launching our POS systems and Mobile Apps which could work like your chai buddy. We have at least 500 customers a day at each outlet and we will see them tomorrow again, so we have to ensure that we are serving them better than any other chai shop and doing a good job the right way.

What is your Vision and Goal for THE CHAI WALAH?

We want to revolutionize the Indian Street-Side Chai experience and monopolize chai by providing the best quality chai to people that is affordable for everyone and provide entrepreneurial opportunities for like-minded people and young individuals by partnering with us via our Franchise Model.

We are also launching new products which can have a high price range, but those who can afford them can buy them otherwise our initial price for a cup of tea will remain the same.

Our initial goal was to have a thousand outlets panIndia but metro cities like Bengaluru, where we are headquartered currently and cities like Hyderabad, Chennai, and Mumbai all have tremendous potential, and we wouldn’t be surprised if we open to double the number of shops than we have initially planned. We are designing our shop models in different formats and also developing designs for mobile, kiosk, and container shops. In near future, we are launching our merchandise line including individual pyramid tea bags, alkaline-based mineral water, Fermented tea called Kombucha, Instant Coffee, Cold brew beverages, etc., and also collaborating and co-branding with lifestyle brands in fashion to attract a younger crowd.

No, not in every city of India at the moment, we are currently focusing on South India- Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhrapradesh, and Telangana. But we are going pan-India and as part of that, we have started the process by getting associated with many companies. We have been investing in IT, mainly in logistics as well as we have developed our next-generation PoS (point of sale) system, which has a lot of features to improve the customer experience and to interact with our customers including a loyalty program that encourages the customers to come back more and more again, and also we have started working on our web platforms, which we are adapting to the latest web 3.0 I don’t think anybody in the beverage industry has used it yet, so, we will be the very first. Also, wherever we have an outlet we are working on developing a delivery system and we will be able to deliver chai and our offerings in 10 minutes.

Why do you think THE CHAI

PRESS RELEASE

Swiftnliftpr/ -- A trade mission of renewable energy-related businesses from Wallonia, a Belgian industrial region, declared plans to expand collaborations with Indian peers. Through a Joint Working Group co-chaired by the Indian Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Belgium and India are having discussions about renewable energy (MNRE). India and Belgium plan to extend their memorandum of understanding in the area of renewable energy for an additional five years this year.

During a week-long trade mission, a group from the Walloon (originating from Wallonia) business cluster TWEED met with Indian colleagues to discuss economic potential, knowledge exchange, and technology collaborations. The goal of the Walloon business cluster TWEED is to support high calibre and industrial-size projects in the fields of the production of sustainable energy. TWEED brings together more than 200 partners, ranging from MNCs to SMEs, through universities and R&D institutes.

Between 26th of September and 30th of September, the Trade Commissions of Wallonia in India programmed B2B meetings, brokerage and networking events. The delegation started the twoday program in Mumbai dedicated to meeting prospective Indian companies and large power generation groups such as Reliance or Tata, and then took part in the Renewable Energy India (REI) Expo in Delhi NCR.

75 years of diplomatic ties between India and Wallonia and Belgium are commemorated, and trade partnerships in renewable energy are expanded.

Belgium was one of the first European countries to establish diplomatic relations with India in September 1947, just a month after India gained independence. In 2022, Belgium and India celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations.

During their last meeting, the two countries decided to foster collaboration in three main sectors: hydrogen, wind and energy storage. In these, Belgium has mature and disruptive projects and worldwide leaders implementing top-notch technologies, whereas India has rolled out important policies and reforms to sustain the growth of the renewable energy sector.

Both nations are in favour of using additional clean technologies. The government of Wallonia, an area of southern Belgium that speaks French, promotes a wide range of circular economy initiatives as well as the advancement of innovative technologies including PV glass, macro-grid, CO2 capture and utilisation schemes, and power-to-gas.

India and Wallonia have already seen successful interactions in several fields. For instance, John Cockerill, who controls more than a third of the global market for alkaline electrolysers, recently announced a JV in India to jointly invest in an electrolyser plant. On the other hand, a significant Indian company is in charge of a Wallonian R&D facility that is working on novel ways to manufacture grey hydrogen.

Wallonia is the best starting point for Indian enterprises wishing to expand operations in Europe and take advantage of an open innovation landscape because of its prime location in the centre of Europe’s industrial crescent (e.g. through the Greenwin or TWEED innovation clusters). Some companies, like PCBL, Jindal, or ELGI Equipment, have already decided to use it as their base. They frequently made their selection in light of the substantial benefits Walloon authorities provide foreign investors in addition to the logistical advantage.

The Walloon delegation is proud to represent a number of innovative, award-winning international corporations with a long history of business in India.

The delegation includes John Cockerill (a multi-industrial company involved in hydrogen, concentrated solar power, and other energy sources), N-Side (data handling for the management of electricity grids), CE+T (multi-awarded pioneers who develop inverters and have long-standing collaborations in India, including an investment in a research lab), Armacell (manufacturing of polyethylene foams for wind turbines, among other energy applications), and chem (worldrenowned in the field of advanced materials). These individuals represent Walloon excellence.

Mr. Fabian Scuvie, Senior Energy Specialist at AWEX (Wallonia’s trade & investment promotion agency), accompanied them and presented Wallonia’s rich innovative ecosystems as well as a mapping of different value chains in the renewable energy sector (companies, research & academic centres, financial and governmental bodies) during two seminars in Mumbai and Delhi. Clearly, collaborations between India and Wallonia are not opportunistic in nature but, rather, the result of mutual recognition of their respective excellence. SOURCE ArctechSam Mathew

Tea is an essential part of their Indian culture and most of them will agree that there are very few things in life as delicious as homemade ‘maa ke haath ki chai’. However, as their lives became increasingly busy, they began to spend less time at home and more time away at work. A typical chai stall, known as a tapri in many parts of India, has turned into a community-building, stressful, and closing landmark. It became more than just another tea stall where they drank tea and disappeared into oblivion... it became a haven of emotions where they found new friendships, discussed ideas for system change, or simply needed to refuel to burn the midnight oil.

Their global and local beverages

That’s why they’ve gone all over the country to bring together the signature chai wallah flavors across India under one umbrella brand. These nostalgic drinks come from their birthplace and the ingredients are purely created by their farmers. The unadulterated and untainted ingredients are used to go through a series of quality checks to ensure perfect hygiene and premium quality When the brand goes to such lengths to bring the essence of India to your doorstep, why not play Cherise TAPRI?

MK Tea Group, a global leader in the production and distribution of orthodox tea, strives to be the epitome of quality tea products. The vision of Mr. Mukundray K. Shah, the group was founded soon after India’s independence: at a time when India was just beginning to experience an industrial and commercial revolution. The company believed that it could carve out a niche for itself in the industry and offer large-scale production of tea based on solid foundations and an effective business plan.

Such precision in a hitherto unorganized industry was new and unique. This has enabled MK Tea Group to become one of the pioneering companies in the tea sector in India. Today, it is a brand dedicated to creating quality tea products – products that are scientifically designed with passion, commitment, and authenticity.

Puneri Gauti Chai

People around the world have been drinking tea for thousands of centuries, and for good reason. Numerous studies have shown that various teas can boost your immune system, fight inflammation, and even stave off cancer and heart disease.

While some beverages provide more health benefits than others, there is plenty of evidence that drinking tea regularly can have a lasting impact on your health. It’s no secret that drinking tea is good for you. Tea is an integral part of traditional medicine and is revered as a panacea in many Asian countries. The Chinese and Japanese have been consuming this tea for health benefits for centuries. It is even promoted in Western medicine as a way to treat cold and flu symptoms. The benefits of drinking tea go far beyond just making you feel better when you’re sick. Drinking tea can help protect brain health, improve heart health, and may even prevent some types of cancer. Here we show you all the health benefits of drinking tea so you can sit back with your favorite mug and sip your health.

Healthy upsides of drinking tea

Health benefits of tea

Protects heart health: Recent research, including animal studies, shows that drinking tea can significantly reduce the risk of serious heart disease, including heart attacks and blood clots. The tea contains anti-inflammatory properties that help calm the tissue in the arteries. This helps minimize the risk of inflammation, which can restrict circulation and cause clotting.

Drinking tea can also help lower high blood pressure and lower cholesterol. One study found that people who drank four or more cups of green tea each day had a 32 percent reduced risk of heart attack and significantly lower levels of bad LDL cholesterol.

☐ Increases energy: Green tea contains small amounts of caffeine, which can help boost energy. Due to its low caffeine content, green tea is a good choice for people who want to reduce their caffeine intake.

The energizing properties of green tea are further fueled by an amino acid known as L-theanine. This amino acid slows the absorption of caffeine. As a

22 SEPTEMBER 2022 SwiftNLift

result, the energy supply from green tea is longer lasting and more stable than the energy supply from a cup of coffee. You get increased focus and energy without jittery side effects or crashes when the caffeine wears off. L-theanine also increases alpha waves in the brain, helping to increase concentration while offering calming and relaxing effects.

☐ Promotes mental health: Regular consumption of tea is associated with a lower risk of neurological diseases and reduced stress levels. Green tea consumption has also shown promise in preventing the cognitive decline associated with brain diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. Tea offers natural calming effects that can reduce stress and help you relax after a busy day.

Tea contains antioxidants that act to prevent oxidative stress that can damage healthy cells. Antioxidants in tea eliminate free radicals caused by pollution and other factors that can cause oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is associated with dementia and depression. Antioxidants also help cleanse the body of toxins that can cause psychological problems. Tea drinkers have been shown to have lower stress levels and improved overall health when consumed regularly.

☐ It can regulate blood sugar: Drinking tea can help regulate blood sugar levels and prevent or control diseases such as type 2 diabetes. Black tea has been shown to lower blood sugar levels after meals. Effects have been demonstrated up to 120 minutes after eating. Scientists attribute these health benefits

to the polyphenols in tea. These polyphenols boast anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

☐ Aids digestion: Tea helps improve digestion and can treat a range of problems from nausea and upset stomach to diarrhea. Ginger tea is an herbal tea that has long been used in China and India to treat an upset stomach. The ingredients gingerol and shogaol help soothe the stomach lining to prevent vomiting. Peppermint tea also helps soothe an upset stomach thanks to its high antioxidant and menthol content.

Tea also contains tannins, which have been shown to reduce intestinal inflammation. This can help calm stomach cramps and treat irritable bowel syndrome.

Final Thoughts

The potential health benefits of tea go far beyond just improving the health of the immune system. Drink the tea daily to prevent the onset of neurological decline and help protect heart health.

Whether you prefer drinking green tea or herbal tea bags, you’re sure to find a tea you’ll love. Explore the diverse earthy and herbal flavors of real teas or mix them with the floral, citrus, spicy, and fruity flavors of herbal teas. As long as you drink tea. You will definitely take advantage of the health benefits of this delicious elixir.

However, India’s tea exports started declining at a CAGR of -1% from 2011-2020, even before covid-19 added to its woes. When the pandemic hit the nation, India’s tea exports fell by 14%.
