From the EDITOR

India is indeed a young country with more than 65 percent of its population under the age of 35. However, there are 110 million seniors in this country who are over 60 years of age, 40 percent of whom live in urban India. From adult diapers, and diagnostic and medical services to senior living complexes and safety equipment, India’s senior care market is worth $1.5 billion.

The coronavirus pandemic has seen a more than 40 percent increase in India’s senior care market. Closures have left older people lonelier and more helpless, blocking home care services. Many of them have also registered on platforms that allow them to socialize virtually. Participating in online house sessions and antakshari contests are highly sought after by senior citizens today.

Today, senior citizens constitute roughly 8% of India’s population and will account for 20% of the country’s population by 2050. This increase in TAM (total addressable market) will drive the growth of the senior care market in the coming years.

The current size of the senior care market is estimated to be around $7 billion. According to a Foundation report, seniors are becoming an

influential consumer segment as most seniors today continue to work past retirement age. They are therefore no longer dependent only on their pension and have great purchasing power. Health care accounts for 31% of their total expenditure. Therefore, there is huge potential in the senior care segment specifically for health/lifestyle/ wellness businesses.

While India’s population is growing at 2% year on year, the senior population is growing at 4% every year. And this is fueling the demand for eldercare products along with the fact that seniors are a diverse cohort, and their needs, wants and affinities are heterogeneous.

Today’s seniors are a far cry from the seniors of 30 years ago who were less experimental and cautious about their spending. Seniors today are fiercely independent, understand the benefits of technology, and are investing in a range of medical and non-medical elder care products that add ease, convenience, and safety to their lives.

As an increased number of seniors will continue to work/consult part-time after retirement, seniors-only networking platforms will emerge that will aim to enable seniors to find jobs that suit their requirements.

In our edition of “Five Most Dynamic Business Leaders, Ruling the Elderly Care Services Industry 2022”, on the cover page, we have Mrigna Nagraj the Founder, of ‘50 Plus Assist’. They take care of all the requirements of their seniors, provide as many services as they would need, and do the best in our capacity as individuals.

SwiftNLift is more than just a business publication. We intend to address all such themes that contribute to the advancement of our society. We always aim to write articles that cover the most recent trends and important themes. We worked hard as a team to bring you this edition for our readers. I hope you like reading this portion of our work!

50 Plus Assist

What is 50Plus Assist?

We are an elder care organization actively working towards improving the well-being and quality of life of the elderly. At 50 plus Assist we believe that while a person’s lifestyle may change as they get older, their ability to enjoy life should not. We provide help and advice to those who want to age in place – and remain in the home they love, for as long as they’d like to.

How does 50 Plus Assist come into existence?

When I started living with my grandmother, who was diagnosed with dementia, I realized that we were not equipped to take adequate care of her. This was an unaddressed healthcare issue in India. it was a gap that I knew I could fill.

Taking First-Hand care of my Grand Mother has helped me to understand the needs, concerns, and problems the elderly across the country probably face as well. We noticed how parents, often of NRI children, were bored. All they required was the company and some basic help in monitoring their health. But children were often clueless about how to provide that support. Recognizing this need is what led to the creation of 50 Plus Assist.

Tell us about yourself. How was your academic and career life before establishing 50 Plus Assist?

I graduated from Subharti medical college, Meerut. I moved to Brazil and did my post-graduation there. I was one of the medical teammates in the commonwealth games, in 2010.

What challenges did you face while establishing it?

The major challenge was and continues to be the lack of

understanding about the importance of elder care that exists in India. The people we call the sandwich generation take up a lot of responsibilities by taking care of their previous and next generations, and most of the time it becomes a little too much, leading them into burnout and breakdowns. Our aim is to sensitize the population of India to make them understand that they don’t have to handle all this guilt and burden as we work along with them in providing the quality of life their parents deserve.

There is a need for a team to manage this kind of industry. How have you formed that team?

Finding the right kind of people to work in this Industry is definitely a long process. We at 50 Plus Assist are a set of trained elder care specialists, who have a background in psychology, physiotherapy, gerontology, etc. For me, the hiring process would involve understanding the aptitude of the person I am hiring, because along with the subject understanding, skills like empathy and compassion play a major role in continuously working in the field of elder care. So, it’s really important that their professional goals are aligned with our vision.

Tell us about the services and solutions you guys provide.

☐ Intellectual companionship: For the elderly who live alone or have been diagnosed with an agerelated condition, social support is of utmost importance. Also for someone progressing in age, the need to keep the cognitive functions active

through activities, conversations, and discussions is really important. We meet this need through intellectual companionship.

☐ Dementia care: For Clients who have an elderly parent or spouse with Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, or dementia, we have specialized caregivers. At 50+ assist we mainly focus on improving the quality of life and emotional well-being of the elderly. It’s quite important to know that organically the brain is unable to go through any added pressure because of the atrophy involved. Hence the stimulation provided is something that will arouse the interest of the elderly and will be in conjunction with their current physical and mental abilities.

☐ Physiotherapy care: we provide tailor-made, personalized, and high standards of physiotherapy care. We accurately diagnose the problem, decide the best course of treatment, and create a program that suits the needs of the senior.

☐ Home care management: We help the elderly run their home efficiently, from managing the finances

of the household to checking the hygiene level of the house and staff management, we will make sure that the house runs seamlessly without the elderly having to exert themselves.

☐ Health monitoring: The elderly who have recently returned from hospitals need continuous health monitoring. We provide services ensuring that their needs and requirements are met.

What kind of challenges and opportunities do you see in this field?

The opportunities in this field are really great considering how our country is gradually realizing the need for elder care. Recently, Ratan Tata has provided seed funding for a startup called Goodfellows that exclusively provides companionship for seniors. This gives us hope that everyone would realize the significance of companionship and elder care as an industry would get more recognition.

Our services are something every household can benefit from. The major challenge I have felt is finding, training,

and retaining professionals. As I had mentioned before, there is a certain level of empathy and kindness rather than professional knowledge that makes a person continue working in this field, and finding the right people to form a team with both the skill set and aptitude is a long process. The government policies are also not very supportive. High taxes are levied for our services, which in itself makes it economically challenging.

We would like to know about the success stories you have helped shape.

We help the seniors we work with rekindle or even find their passion. We believe that retirement is really the time everyone would have been looking forward to, to find their own interests but then, a lot of us tend to forget that too, because of age-related illnesses and also because sometimes life just comes in the way. We have helped multiple people we work with go back to their interests and find a purpose that they are passionate about.

We have had one of our clients make beautiful candles and we set up a stall with them on Diwali. This is a

50Plus Assist helped Andre Keith create a passion project of making and selling hand-made candles. He is receiving really good response from people who have bought the candles and this has made a huge impact on his self-esteem.

person whose life got uprooted in so many ways but has that purpose to work towards bringing in significant changes in his self-esteem and motivation.

Most of our seniors have led a very fruitful, successful life. For us, being able to help them maintain the same energy and sense of accomplishment is our success. One of our clients, Mrs. Naresh Luthar has been an independent woman almost her entire life and has helped cause so many reformative changes in society. We have always felt inspired by the amount of sheer willingness she has toward life. As someone like her grows older, there is a personal realization that happens within oneself, that the things one used to do alone, can still be done, with some amount of support. We consider it a privilege that she chose us to be that support. The same goes for every senior we work with.

How would you describe the responsibilities of the position?

As a company working in elder care, the responsibilities are huge. People not only trust us to take care of their parents, but to manage their whole household, to be in charge of medical care, and to take care of emergencies. So, ensuring that the trust is handled well, becomes an everyday responsibility.

What are your company goals and visions?

Our vision is to provide quality service over quantity. So, we always pace ourselves to ensure that the quality of our services is not compromised. Our goal is to take care of all the requirements of our seniors, to provide as many services as they would need, and to do the best in our capacity as individuals.

FIVE MOST DYNAMIC BUSINESS LEADERS, RULING THE ELDERLY CARE SERVICES INDUSTRY

2022

Seva At Home

Gandhi, CEO

Seva At Home was created as a solution to the growing problem of inadequate healthcare facilities and the lack of care providers available for the elderly in India.

Although home health care and other care services are on the rise in both the US and India, the availability of a structure that can facilitate quality telecare services for people who want to care for their families remotely is definitely needed.

This is the main reason why the founders of Seva At Home came together to develop a system that would be able to help family members take care of their loved ones at home even when they are far away or working abroad to ensure the well-being of their family.

In early 2017, one of their Seva At Home co-founders was trying to find a caregiver to take care of his family in India. Unfortunately, he had trouble finding a reliable and trustworthy service that would provide his family with quality care while he was in the US.

This made them realize that many people had the same problem as him. So, they wanted to find a way to help these people take care of their families in India the way they want their own families to be taken care of.

A few weeks after that, their founders, who worked in various healthcare and technology industries, sat down and talked about finding ways to create a reliable and trustworthy remote care service that would provide people living far from their families with the proper care for their loved ones’ needs.

Their goal was to provide an easier and more convenient way for people to hire and track caregivers, giving them peace of mind, security, and knowing that their family members are being properly cared for, even when they are far from home. Their Services

Ways an elderly person should be cared

The pace of population ageing in this decade is much faster than in the past. Population ageing means that people are living longer, it has been estimated by prestige institutions that soon the number of people 60 or older will outnumber the children younger than 5. And the world’s population will be doubled by the end of 2050.

Now, elderly people are more prone to chronic diseases, vulnerable to infections and injuries, risk of an untimely death, and gradual disease in physical & mental capacity. But this is not only related to biological changes but ageing is also related to retirements, relocations, death of someone close or the same age group, and feeling of missing out.

Most of the physical health problems in elderly people can be cured or treated with medications, exercises, or therapies. But it requires much more than that for

an elderly person to remain healthy or be happy and content. Physical and Social environments can affect health directly and bring an impact on elderly people, which can sometimes be a shocking revelation. In being healthy or not, the role of biological parts or genes is no doubt important, but the environment is equally responsible for the way of healthy living of a person.

Ways to care for Elderly People at Home

Keep them (elderly people) involved in decisions of their healthcare as much as possible. Doing the opposite can make them resistant to receiving help.

□ Install safety features or equipment at home. Make the house more accessible and the environment safer by attaching bars or railings to grab for support,

22 OCTOBER 2022 SwiftNLift

installing shower seats, lighting in the corners, antiscalding devices in sinks or showers, etc.

□ Stay involved in their medical care, check for when the condition is worsening, whether they are taking the right medicine, what problems are they facing currently, etc

□ Encourage them to socialize, if they don’t have much of a social network, you can organize some activities or classes for them which will encourage them to meet new people and it can result in making them stay physically, emotionally, and mentally healthy and active.

□ Help them stay active, some people think that being old is all about rest and being in bed, but exercising frequently and doing moderate exercises is a must for a healthier and more active body.

Talk to them about finances, if the elderly person is retired, which is a high possibility, it can be too much to handle all the medical expenses and safety upgrades at the house, or even hire help. Talking to them about finance and the problems associated with it and how you can help in that anyhow can ease their mental stress.

Ways to care for Elderly People at Hospitals

Keep an update on their hospital care, asking the hospital staff about the treatments and medicines being used for your patient and what are the treatment options in case of chronic diseases.

□ Visit frequently, no matter how much fine care & treatment the hospital is providing, elderly people always look forward to meeting their loved ones.

Talk to them about their treatment wishes, if they want to go through the procedure, give them a whole explanation about how the treatment would be done and what impact it can have on them and ask for their decision after that, don’t impose the treatment on them.

Tanvi Mallya’s Elder Care Services

Tanvi Mallya’s Elder Care Services (TMECS) was founded with a dream, a dream to keep loved ones close; to help you build a system - just like you’d find in a nursing home - in the comfort of your own home, within reach of your resources! Research has often indicated the steep decline that individuals with various types of neurodegeneration experience when there is a change in their environment; so, you can only imagine what uprooting their entire existence would do to them if they were moved to a nursing home!

Together with TMECS, you can put together a care plan that addresses all of your seniors’ needs in the comfort of their own home; they help you through services like:

■ Cognitive stimulation therapy (daily/weekly visits)

■ Initial and regular needs assessment

■ Family counseling

■ Training staff

■ Dynamic care plan

They don’t believe in selling care packages in boxes

because they believe the most effective ones don’t come in boxes! They adapt their care to best suit the needs of your seniors. They understand that every individual and every neurological disorder is different and they make every effort to translate that understanding into helping you set up the perfect home care system!

They are primarily based in Mumbai and offer all their services here, but ideas are limitless, so if you or a loved one is based outside of Mumbai, feel free to drop them an email - they might be able to work something out for you.

Their Services

At TMECS, they provide a wide range of services. Each of these services is tailored to the last seam to perfectly meet the needs of your seniors and your family. Some of their services are:

■ Cognitive stimulation therapy/regular visits: Their Elder Care Professionals/CSTherapists regularly visit seniors and try to engage them and provide them with cognitive stimulation. Sessions, in addition to medication, aim to stabilize neurological decline.

Tanvi Mallya - Founder

Creation/modification of care plans: Every individual is different and neurodegenerative disorders manifest differently in different individuals. One care plan cannot fit all, which is why they go to great lengths to create tailormade care plans for seniors, taking into account all relevant aspects.

■ Physical therapy: Physical fitness is often compromised, especially when older people lose the confidence to walk or are exposed to physical problems. Their physiotherapists will help you keep them active and fit!

■ Nutritional counseling: Nutrition is a very important element in care. An unbalanced diet can lead to malnutrition, mood swings, and other health problems that can impair quality of life. Through nutritional counseling, they help you ensure that seniors eat well!

■ Family counseling and resource sharing: They understand that caring for the elderly can be challenging and can be a challenging task for a family. They offer counseling services to help you through this process and share resources that will better equip you to deal with this disorder and help you maintain a loving relationship with your seniors.

■ Counseling for staff/carers: Caregivers are at increased risk of developing stress/anxiety/mood disorders. During long periods of caregiving, vicious circles are created that reduce the quality of care provided to seniors. Their counseling sessions help staff/caregivers better deal with conflicts/ emotions and improve the overall quality of life for your seniors.

Common health issues in elderly people

Traditionally elderly people fall in the category of 65 years of age or more than that. And at this stage people start feeling physical problems, illness, and chronic diseases. Old age is when people are nearing the life expectancy of their life and at this time or stage, they don’t have stronger immunity and limited regenerative abilities which makes them prone to injuries, wounds that won’t heal easily, catching infections, etc.

Sometimes elderly people experience several health issues at once. Old age is not a definite biological stage, it can vary from place to place but if ageing is described in biological terms, it means that there is molecular or cellular damage over time that is the impact of ageing. The health changes in elderly people are not linear nor consistent, sometimes they get diagnosed just within

a regular checkup and come like a blow, other times a health problem that was there for a long time keeps on getting worse and critical with age.

With all the fitness regimes and self-care awareness, global organizations have concluded through surveys that people are living longer now. But still, can’t be ignored the emergence of several health problems that comes with old age.

Common Health Problems in Elderly People

Some national and international councils have estimated through their research and studies that at least 92% of elderly people have one chronic disease and 77% have

two. Common health issues in old age are also widely associated with organ-related problems like hearing loss, cataracts, neck & back pain, arthritis, etc, other than organ-related there is diabetes, blood pressure, dementia, depression, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, etc.

■ Diabetes: This means having high blood sugar levels in the body, where people can’t process the amount of sugar they intake. It can be diagnosed early & easily and actions to control and manage diabetes can be started soon. Diabetes can lead to kidney or heart diseases as well.

Some of the most common health issues in old age are

■ Arthritis: Probably the number one problem in elderly people. This is a bones and joints related disorder that can result in pain and lower quality of life for senior people. In Arthritis, it’s a high probability that people suffering from it would like to make negligible movements or discourage them from being active, but it is important to have a personalized activity or exercise plan given by doctors or experts.

■ Heart Problems: Heart Diseases are responsible for close to 2/3rd of deaths in elderly people. These issues differ in men and women and are not easily diagnosed. Eating well, exercising, and cutting down on alcohol can reduce the chances of a heart condition in elderly people.

■ Cancer: After heart disease, cancer is probably the second leading cause of death among elderly people. Early diagnosis or screening can help in getting cancer treated, but not every type of cancer has a treatment yet. So, it can’t be prevented completely but the quality of life can be improved by adopting certain habits and controls in life.

■ Respiratory Diseases: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is the third most leading cause of death in elderly people. It can make older people vulnerable to infections, and pneumonia, and increase senior health risks in many aspects.

COPD has Asthma, Emphysema, and Chronic Bronchitis, which can be managed with regular lung function tests.
