Imagine a place where a child can not only fix a car, but can also plant corn, climb clouds, and visit a life-size tyrannosaurus rex.

No need to actually imagine though because this place is real, and it’s 50 miles north of Sioux Falls on I-29.

At the Children’s Museum of South Dakota, the unique experience of hands-on play and exploration leads visitors from across the country to Brookings where quality time with loved ones is taken to a new level.

With family time at a premium, a “daycation” road trip can be just the ticket to creating memories that last forever.

As a former elementary school and the cornerstone of

historic downtown Brookings, the Children’s Museum of South Dakota is an experience for the young and the young at heart.

Don’t let the name “museum” flood your mind with thoughts of priceless art and the “no-touch” policies found in traditional galleries of displayed treasures.

In contrast, this museum is a destination for the imagination, offering an open-ended experience with both indoor and outdoor fun that even adults will find entertaining.

Upon arrival, museum guests are greeted with KidStreet, a replica of a small town Main Street that recently welcomed a new addition: Whiskers & Tails Veterinary Clinic.

ADVERTORIAL
This “Daycation” Offers Family Fun for Everyone!

With a scale, examination table, and an x-ray viewer, future veterinarians and animal lovers alike can care for plush pet patients.

Additional activities on KidStreet include:

• Under the Hood – be the mechanic under the car, change tires, and repair mufflers

• Post Office – weigh, sort, and deliver mail

• Café Oscar – take orders, make coffee, and prepare sandwiches and sundaes

• Market Fresh Grocery – be a clerk, stocker, and customer in this trueto-life grocery store

It is well-researched that children learn through play. Adults learn through play, too – they learn how the children in their life see the world, the value of taking family time, and they learn it’s okay to relax and enjoy small moments in life.

Give the Gift of Play

A play pass, gift certificate, or membership to the Children’s Museum of South Dakota is a gift that can last all year long. Whether it is for a holiday, birthday, or “just because” taking family time creates memories that last a lifetime.

LOVE THE PROCESS OF BUYING A CAR

Buying a new car can seem like a daunting process but it doesn’t have to be. Finding the right car at the right dealership can make you fall in love with the car-buying process.

The first step in the car-buying process is choosing the right brand. Make sure to do your homework on the different models, features, and colors so you can pinpoint what you want. A brand that stands out in the industry is Subaru. Known for being a safe reliable vehicle with great handling, Subarus hold their resale value. According to the Kelley Blue Book list of 2022 vehicles with the best resale value, the Subaru Crosstrek, Forester, and Outback topped the list as the best SUVs that retain their value.

Now that you are convinced owning Subaru is in your future, there is only one dealership to go to, Schulte Subaru of Sioux Falls. What sets them apart is their commitment to serving you. They honor this commitment by taking sales pressure out of the car-buying equation. Rather than working off commission sales, Schulte Subaru rewards their sales staff with a consistent income and incentives that are based on team performance rather than individual performance. In fact, rather than hiring staff from within the industry, Schulte Subaru usually hires staff without previous car sales experience and provides training to ensure that undesired sales tactics are not used during the process.

Unlike other dealerships that transfer you to the finance department once you have decided to buy the car, at Schulte Subaru you will stay with the same sales representative from start to finish. The need

to renegotiate terms, the fear of being sold unnecessary additional services, and having to spend half your day at the dealership just to buy a car doesn’t exist at Schulte Subaru. By breaking down lines between departments that exist in other dealerships, cross-training staff in all service lines, and investing in their employee’s growth and personal development Schulte Subaru has created a team culture that is personable and fun. For this dealership, selling cars is what they do and not who they are. This is why anyone no matter their age or gender can be confident that they will be treated honestly and fairly whether they are buying a new or used car or trading in their current vehicle. By listening and learning from customer feedback Schulte Subaru’s unmatched customer service makes them confident in their ability to satisfy every customer.

What makes Schulte Subaru even more of an attractive choice is its state-of-the-art facility that was built with the customer in mind. They are open daily Monday-Thursday 7:30 am-7:00 pm, Friday until 6:00 pm, Saturday from 8:00 am-6:00 pm, and Sunday from 1:00-4:00 pm, ensuring they are open at times that are convenient for you to shop. Schulte Subaru has a large selection of new and used vehicles to choose from. The showroom is large enough for at least one of each Subaru, so if the South Dakota climate isn’t cooperating, you can comfortably shop. If you’re bringing your vehicle in for service or bodywork, you get the benefits of their complimentary shuttle service, a loaner Subaru, or Schulte Concierge Service. Plus, you can relax in Schulte Subaru’s comfortable customer lounge with free Wi-fi, an internet bar with a charging station, large-screen TVs, massage chairs, video games, snacks, and self-service beverages.

ADVERTORIAL

Speaking of creature comforts, they recently added an 11,000-square-foot community dog park that is open to the public.

One more equally important reason to choose Schulte Subaru over its amenities is its values. Owners Mike and Sarah Schulte are devoted to the idea that every interaction is a chance to make the world a better place, which is why you can find them in the dealership working alongside their employees most days. Their commitment to their employees and the community is why Schulte Subaru was named The Subaru Love Promise Retailer of the Year for 2020 and South Dakota Auto Dealers 2021 Dealer of the Year. For them, kindness is not just a word, it is a way of doing business. They share the love through their commitment to community, whether it’s supporting 10,000 animals yearly at the Sioux Falls Humane Society or donating custom vehicles to help the B-Squad Dog Rescue team transport thousands of at-risk dogs. Schulte Subaru has been a true friend to animals in need. Their generosity also extends to other organizations as well including Great Bear Ski Valley, connecting families through fun activities; the Mayor’s Veterans Community Project, providing tiny homes for homeless veterans; the Children’s Home Society, providing shelter to children to escape abusive environments, and donating 3 cars to Meals on Wheels ensuring those in need have access to food.

Schulte Subaru truly embodies the phrase, Love. It’s what makes Subaru, Subaru.

Creating an Epically Romantic

Perhaps the most romantic holiday of the year is not Valentine’s Day, and it is conceivably New Year’s Eve. Think about it...you are still on the emotional high that only the magic of Christmas can bring, and those emotions are ready to spill over into a night filled with fun, excitement, and anticipation of the upcoming new year. The opportunity to experience one of the most epically romantic evenings of your life is at its peak. To help you capitalize on the romantic feels of the season we have put together a list of date night options to turn your evening into an epically romantic New Year’s Eve bash.

Buy those expensive event tickets. Chances are there is an overthe-top party that you have been wanting to go to every year but can’t bring yourself to spend the cash. You know that party that has the best entertainment, 5-star rated food, and is located at a place you rarely go to because of price. Why not splurge on those tickets, get all dressed up, and make it a night to remember?

Dress up for a private party of two. If you have been there/ done that to the glamorous party and found it not to be worth the expense, you don’t have to give up the glitz and the glam. Instead of going out, create a night that is focused on the two of you. Get all dressed up, open a bottle of wine, order in and play the music you can slow dance to in your dining room. The bonus is you won’t have to worry about how you will get home safely because you will already be there!

Ring in the New Year in a new zip code. Why not use that extra PTO before you lose it and hop on a plane to a romantic

New Year's New Year's

Eve Bash!

destination? There are multiple places within flying or driving distance where you can experience New Year’s Eve in a whole new atmosphere. If a romantic getaway is not within your budget, try playing tourist in your hometown. Experience a beautiful Airbnb or hotel to celebrate your New Year’s staycation.

Start New Traditions based on Old Traditions from Around the World. Rather than watching the ball drop in Times Square again this year, why not explore what other countries do to celebrate the new year? Theme your whole evening around a favorite country you have visited or want to visit with your partner. For example, in Spain, they bring in the new year by eating 12 grapes, which represents each strike of the clock. It is a tradition rooted in history and is believed to ward off evil to make way for a prosperous new year.

Become the Ultimate New Year’s Eve destination by hosting a dinner party. Securing a dinner reservation at your favorite restaurant, well actually any restaurant on New Year’s Eve, will be next to impossible. So why not skip the heartache and invite your friends over for a dinner party? Make it super elegant or cozy casual depending on the vibe you are going for. If you don’t feel like preparing all of the food, then go for a potluck, or skip the meal altogether and go straight to an appetizer and wine-tasting party. Ask each guest to bring their favorite bottle of wine, hide the labels and discover together your new favorite wine.

Whichever idea you choose, let romance fill the midnight air of your epic New Year’s Eve bash. n

WEDDING WONDERLAND

THE MEADOW BARN OFFERS A BEAUTIFUL VENUE FOR WINTER WEDDINGS

Living in South Dakota means accepting that winters will be a bit chilly, and because of that, winter weddings are not as popular as summer weddings. But The Meadow Barn, located south of Sioux Falls, offers couples a beautiful wedding experience even in the chilliest of months.

Katie Jones, who owns The Meadow Barn and The Veranda by Meadow Barn with her husband Greg, says that couples interested in winter weddings will have more prime date options available than in the summer months. Saturday weddings are hard to come by in other seasons because they book up first, but in the winter, it’s more likely there will be some great dates still available at The Meadow Barn.

Winter weddings are also more affordable due to the offpeak pricing. Jones says that some vendors may even offer discounts as well during the winter months. Along with the more affordable pricing, there are also special perks available to couples that select a winter wedding date at The Meadow Barn.

“When I think of a winter wedding here in South Dakota, I think of the warmth, all the textures, and the vibrant colors you can play around with,” Jones said. “The Meadow Barn is a venue that has all of that.”

The Meadow Barn is a real post and beam structure, which creates a cozy and warm atmosphere, and has three large chandeliers that add an elegant touch. Some couples will decorate the space with popular greenery and pops of color during the winter months, and because The Meadow Barn already provides a warm and cozy ambiance, some couples find they don’t need as many additional decorations.

Jones shares that another fun element to play around with for the reception is selecting creative and seasonal drinks. Signature drinks have included Hot Mulled Wine and a Spiced Bourbon Old Fashioned.

For couples wanting to have a more formal or black-tie affair, a winter wedding is the perfect opportunity for that. Jones

says because weddings in the winter aren’t as common, guests don’t experience the wedding fatigue they may experience in other seasons.

Another huge benefit to having a winter wedding is the pictures, Jones says.

“I’m always taken aback by pictures outside of The Meadow Barn, especially if there’s a coat of white snow,” Jones said. “They’re just breathtaking. Outdoor pictures can be extremely beautiful and you can get creative with all the great photo opportunities the property has.”

Jones says between Thanksgiving and March is their busiest time for booking weddings. For couples wanting information on available dates, package options, and prices, they can find all of that online on The Meadow Barn’s revamped website.

to Holiday Glamour & Glitz

Do you ever ask yourself, “What am I going to wear to this party?” You may gravitate towards the typical little black dress, but while a neutral-colored outfit is always fabulous to have in the closet, repetition can be boring. Instead of wearing the usual, here are some ideas to make this year’s events from exquisite to casual to unforgettable, while you celebrate the holidays and toast the New Year.

You can never go wrong with a little bit of sparkle:

Make this your year to be a stunning statement by adding sequins, crystal mesh, or crystals to your holiday wardrobe. Seriously, sparkly material or metallic fabric is an excellent way to brighten up the room and add an extra dose of glamour.

Still stuck on that little black dress? Now is the time to notch up the va-va-voom factor. Fashion experts are raving about neutral-colored dresses paired with overlying sequined material. Sequins are the perfect way to dress up pants, tops, and jackets.

Still not convinced? If sequins are not your style, consider using long fringe or feathers to accentuate the length and flare of any outfit.

What about the accessories?

Drop earrings and layered necklaces with two-toned colors are the tickets to enhance this year’s look. Consider metals that feature crystals to accentuate any outfit.

Don’t forget the shoes!

If flashy jewelry or clothing isn’t your thing, consider a jeweled boot or heel to bring on the holiday spirit.

Remember, life is too short to fade into the background –step out in your holiday glam and be the toast of the party this season! n

The blustery South Dakota winter has set in with considerably less sun, which means the majority of the population will become vitamin D deficient. Vitamin D also known as the sunshine vitamin, is manufactured in our skin following sunlight exposure. According to GrassrootsHealth, studies have found that people with low vitamin D experience reduced athletic performance and are at a higher risk of many serious diseases: namely, cardiovascular disease, cancers like breast and colorectal, autoimmune diseases including diabetes and multiple sclerosis, and even infections, flu, colds and much more.

What is ironic about winter is that when people need vitamin D the most, the majority are not getting enough. The question remains: Why is it that we can so easily become Vitamin D deficient in the winter months? The answer is: Because we are confined inside. Between work, the bitter cold, and indoor-focused activities, we get less and less sunlight. “Our bodies have evolved to use the sun to get vitamin D,” shares Carole Baggerly, founder of GrassrootsHealth. “We are just now learning the long-term effects of being Vitamin D deprived.”

The best way to combat a vitamin D deficiency is by educating yourself, testing serum levels, adjusting behaviors such as sun exposure, and finding a good supplement source. “The standard vitamin D serum level that you need to measure, is between 40 and 60 nanograms/milliliter (ng/ml),” says Carole. From an ‘intake’ standpoint, GrassrootsHealth, the world’s leading Nutrient Research Institute, has demonstrated that with their 18,000 study participants it takes about 5000 IU/day of vitamin D3 for a 150 lb person to achieve that level.

Making sure you have adequate vitamin D intake is something you can do to help boost your immunity and protect your health. n

AT LAST! THE PERFECT PRESENT FOR THE PERSON WHO HAS EVERYTHING

We all have them, the people who are incredibly difficult to shop for because they seem to have it all. It can make finding a meaningful gift for them not only frustrating but nearly impossible.

This year, make your shopping a breeze with a gift card from 3 Degrees Infrared Sauna Studio. Not only is it unique, but also something that anyone can benefit from.

Set up to accommodate both individuals and couples, guests can take advantage of a whole-body vibration machine that helps to tighten, tone, and boost lymphatic drainage as well as enjoy cold eucalyptusinfused towels. Unlike traditional steam saunas, infrared saunas provide a dry heat that doesn’t feel as hot and doesn’t cause difficulty breathing. Perhaps the largest difference is that infrared light actually penetrates human tissue up to two inches and offers therapeutic benefits because of its ability to be absorbed by your body. It safely raises core body temperatures by 3

degrees during each 40-minute session! This results in a healthy, deep, and detoxifying sweat similar to a fat-torching workout.

A perfect bonus? It’s an amazing escape from South Dakota’s frigid winter temperatures and anyone who suffers from S.A.D. (Seasonal Affective Disorder)! Each session is 40 minutes of sheer relaxation and a perfect way to unwind after a stressful day. According to 3 Degrees member Margaret, “My husband and I were gifted a couple’s session, and while I expected to enjoy it, I didn’t expect it to be such an incredible experience. It’s so different from steam saunas that I’ve experienced before. I would never have been able to sit in that for 40 minutes but our session was relaxing, private and so comfortable. After our session, we slept better than we have in a long time.”

Beyond relaxation and rejuvenation benefits, the reasons to try this out for yourself or gift one of your besties are too good to pass up!

Shopping Downtown Sioux Falls for holiday gifts is one of the most delightful “chores” of the season, but midway through, a small stop to have a warm beverage by the fire makes it even more fun. Set the bags of gifts down and grab a coffee and lunch at Josiah’s Coffeehouse, Café and Bakery.

“For people that have never been to Josiah’s, they mistakenly think it is a small coffeehouse,” owner Kibbi McCormick, said.  “When they get here, they are flabbergasted to see the large space we have and that we serve everything from pastries, to steak and eggs, biscuits and gravy, and hot turkey on Tuesdays!”

Josiah’s was named after one of the founding fathers of Sioux Falls, Josiah Phillips. Josiah truly got the business community started in the city but died at only 47 years. His wife, Hattie, left with six children and one on the way, continued her late husband’s vision for the city, and helped found the Children’s Home Society, the YMCA, the Women’s History Club and so much more. How apt that their gifts are commemorated in a café that serves the heart of the city they loved.

“What a unique and comfy feeling it is to be in the vibrant downtown area,” Kibbi said. “I don’t think people realize how many nice stores, boutiques and restaurants and bars there are downtown. It’s a safe area, its beautiful, and Josiah’s will help get you in the holiday spirit!”

SURVIVING A BEAR

The current economic environment is testing the discipline of even the savviest of investors. Some may panic and jump ship, while others will ride it out and wait for calmer waters. Which mindset do you have?

All markets move in cycles, including periods of steep contraction. Since equity markets have reached multiple record highs over the last few years a downturn was inevitable. But, if the term “bear market” scares you, here are some facts to put it in perspective:

• Bear markets are normal. Since its inception in the late 1920s, the modern S&P 500 has seen 26 bear markets - stocks lost 36% on average. During that same time long-term investors were rewarded with 27 bull markets where stocks gained an average of 114%.*

• The average frequency between bear markets is 3.6 years. You could see about 14 bear markets during a 50-year investment window. Since 1930, the market has been bearish for a time equal to 20.6 years. This means that stocks have been on the rise the other 71.4 years!*

• Bear markets last for significantly less time than bull markets. Bears last on average 9.6 months. Bulls last on average 2.7 years.

Volatility isn’t likely to go away in the coming months, but you shouldn’t have to handle difficult markets alone. Your financial advisor can be your trusted guide. Here are a few questions to help ensure you’re getting the service and advice you need:

Does your advisor review your investments daily?

Our advisors review fund performance daily, weekly, and monthly. And our Investment Committee systematically tests and replaces positions in advisory accounts that no longer meet our standards. This diligence is especially important in volatile markets.

Do you meet with your advisor at least once a year? What do you talk about?

These meetings should be more than just a chance to catch up. Have market conditions thrown your investment strategy offtrack? How do recent life events affect your estate plan? Do new tax laws affect you? We meet with clients at least once each year, and more frequently based on their needs.

These are challenging times, but the markets have historically proven remarkably resilient over the long term. Stick with your well-diversified, long-term financial plan, partner with a trusted financial advisor, and keep inflammatory headlines in perspective to stay on course toward your financial objectives.

During the holiday season, the kitchen and dining room become the heart of the ho-hohome. Memory-making moments are spent there baking goodies, and gathering with loved ones, making these rooms the perfect places to spread holiday cheer. Just because kitchens are designed to be useful and practical, it doesn’t mean they can’t also be as festive as the rest of the home.

One of the easiest, on-trend holiday looks to incorporate in your kitchen or dining area is dried fruit slices. You can easily transition this decor from fall into winter, and beyond. First off, they’re easy to make as you simply cut oranges, lemons, and/or limes into thin slices, place them on a lined baking tray, and bake at 250 degrees for approximately 3 hours. These little slices are so easy to add to the décor you may already have. You can sprinkle or attach these into a variety of fresh or faux greenery, including your tablescape, or in a garland draped over your kitchen window. Dried fruit slices mixed with cinnamon sticks and pinecones can also be beautifully displayed in a bowl or a lantern.

Holiday Tips for Gorgeous Entertaining

Clear vases and hobnail milk glass containers are timeless pieces. They’re handy when decorating because simply changing out the flowers or greenery is all you need to do to transition from one holiday to another. No one can ever go wrong with fresh flowers as a dining table or kitchen island centerpiece. During the holiday season, insert pinecones or tree ornaments into your floral display, bringing a sense of charm and elegance to the table. Try tucking candlesticks into fresh or faux greenery. Candlesticks abound in a multitude of colors and materials, making them easy to swap out for the current season or holiday. Red candlesticks at Christmas will pop and instantly bring holiday cheer to any dining setting.

It’s wonderful to be able to deck the halls (and dining areas) affordably without sacrificing style. Transitioning from one holiday to another by using a little imagination, being creative, and adding your personal touches, can save dollars and gain you gorgeous holiday decorations and ambiance. n

Holiday Eating

The Holidays can certainly be a challenging time to make healthy choices when it comes to eating and drinking. It’s hard enough to make those choices daily, and even more so when Holiday parties and events are abundant, where decadent food and seasonal drinks abound. It can be especially hard as a guest attending a party. Not to worry, here are some healthy eating and drinking ‘best bets’ when it comes to being a Holiday Party Guest.

Don’t drink all of your calories! Whether it’s alcohol, pumpkin spice lattes, or eggnog, these can be loaded with extra calories and sugar, while being sipped quickly and leaving you hungry. So, when it comes to beverages, choose wisely. As a guest, you can bring your signature, health-conscious drink as a contributing gesture for the party. Bring something you will drink, enjoy, and avoid added sugars.

Best Bets:

• red wine

• cranberry spritzer

• champagne (bubbles make you drink slower)

When it comes to food, as a guest it’s out of your control as to what will be served, but you can always bring a dish to share! Bring an appetizer or side dish that is healthy. This way you can fill up on something you know is good for you and still have a smaller serving of the other foods. If you focus on first filling half your plate with vegetables (not green bean casserole), you’ll have just the right amount of room left to take small portions of the main course and side dishes. The key is to bring a dish that you will eat, and will also make the host thankful for your thoughtfulness.

Best Bets:

cuterie boards loaded with fresh veggies, hummus, and fruit festive veggie-packed salads, brothbased soups, squash soups (made with

Holiday desserts are almost in their own food group. There’s never a shortage of sugar-filled goodies at most parties, so why not bring something different? There are plenty of ways you can make healthier versions of classic desserts. Bonus, no one will know your dessert is the healthy version, but you’ll know the ingredients in your creation pass the test. It’s also fun to think outside of traditional desserts and bring something new and different to experience - everyone will thank you! By bringing a healthy dessert option or alternative, you’ll be able to enjoy the party and not worry about that pecan pie sticking with you throughout the Holiday season.

Best Bets:

• fruit bowl/salad

• chocolate dipped fruit

• stuffed dates

• chocolate or pumpkin pie hummus

• mixed or spiced nuts

So, there you have it - proof that you can attend Holiday parties, make healthy choices with food and drink, and have fun! Plus, the host will appreciate the time, effort, and thoughtfulness you put into your contribution to the party.

Cheers to eating and drinking your way through the Holidays, healthily and merrily all the way!. n

Simply Perfect Style

Among the mature tree lined streets of the well-known McKennan Park neighborhood, sits a renovated craftsman style home proudly owned by Alex Halbach. From the moment you pass through the front door and step onto the beautiful 1 ½” white oak wood floors, it is easy to see he has poured his heart and soul into this home. This homeowner has done a brilliant job of preserving and enhancing historic details like the oversized oak baseboards, glass doorknobs and stunning wood floors, all while introducing modern design elements throughout.

Mr. Halbach, a lawyer and Partner with Cutler Law Firm, was first drawn to the McKennan Park area in 2007 while interning nearby at the Boys and Girls Club of the Sioux Empire before attending law school. Alex says, “I fell in love with this unique neighborhood and began regularly checking Zillow for homes for sale.” This particular home kept popping up in search results, but it needed a lot of work and he didn’t know if he was ready for the challenges of renovating an older home. Eventually, Alex decided to take a look and he fell in love with the thought of what it could be, not necessarily what it was. Alex is the 4th homeowner of this 107-year-old home, and he plans to make it his forever home.

Story by Lisa Marie Blair Photos by Kelly Middlebrooks

Alex closed on this long-awaited home in 2010 and quickly started renovations to make it his own, but project after project brought remodel fatigue and in 2015, he decided to dive head-first into a 2-year renovation to transform the property which was completed in 2017 with the help of Penny Klinedinst from Simply Perfect and Ryan Knutson from Boulevard Construction. Alex lifted the home and installed a new foundation which allowed him to add additional living space on the main floor, lower and upper level. The addition includes a butler’s pantry, mudroom, half bath, covered porch, and almost tripled the size of the original kitchen. The kitchen is very timeless with its white perimeter cabinets, neutral grey subway tile, and large island painted in Urbane Bronze. The addition was so well designed that you would never guess that the floorplan was changed so drastically. Not only is this 1915 craftsman style home larger, but it’s also packed with character and style like apron front sinks that are true to that era.

The butler’s pantry allows Alex to keep his kitchen neat while all the kitchen essentials are nearby. In this beautiful pantry you’ll also find modern amenities like an espresso machine sitting on a beautiful Cambria quartz countertop and a conveniently located beverage and wine fridge. The nearby mudroom and half bath are in perfect harmony as all the cabinetry is painted in Blue Spruce and feature custom Aeroscape tile created by Ryan Knutson, which Ryan manufactures himself. Halbach is quick to give credit to Ryan and Penny for making his renovation vision a reality.

Alex added an eye catching black and white geometric wallpaper that runs the entire length of the home by starting in the main level mudroom and continuing down the staircase to the opposite end of the basement. The established lawyer explains that the wallpaper was picked with the intention of transitioning those walking throughout the home from the white and bright upstairs to the black and moody basement. This tactic works brilliantly in making the upper and lower levels of this 4000 square foot home blend seamlessly.

Once you’ve entered the lower level, you are immediately drawn to the show stopping 1800 bottle temperature controlled wine cellar and bar. The wine cellar cabinets, custom made library ladder, and ceiling are all finished in black walnut and were custom built by Ryan in the garage of his home. The back wall of the cellar features Sioux quartzite with a raised beaded joint, which is appropriate for a home built in 1915. The oversized black bar has plenty of space for mixing drinks on the Cambria quartz countertop making it perfect for entertaining. Near the bar is a rustic white oak pool table paired with a large chandelier and modern concrete fireplace. Alex pointed out to me that the pool table light and almost all the other finishes and furniture in the home are from Penny’s store. Mr. Halbach explains, “I met Penny through mutual friends and work connections. I love being the first in line for the Simply Perfect dock sales, even if that means arriving at 3:30 am with coffee and mimosas in hand.”

46 SiouxFallsWoman.net | Holiday 2022

Alex, a self-proclaimed tech nerd, explained that this 4-bedroom, 4-bathroom home is fully automated. The Control4 system installed by Home Definitions in Sioux Falls allows him to control all aspects of the home - including sound, lighting, video, and temperature from the wall-mounted screens conveniently located throughout the home or controlled from an app on his phone. Halbach’s home was approved by the Sioux Falls Board of Historic Preservation. Following the completion of this project, Alex joined the Board of Historic preservation, where he has previously served as its President. ”My home is living proof that older homes can be renovated and reimagined to create a comfortable modern home that can last for another century.”

The magic of what Alex created in his home has inspired the homeowner to partner with Ryan and Penny on more projects. Following the completion of the project in 2017, Alex and Ryan joined forces and together now own Boulevard Companies which includes Boulevard Properties and Boulevard Construction. They recently partnered with Penny to form Simply Perfect Properties where they plan to “reimagine restoration” of other historic, one-of-a-kind properties and recently started a full renovation of a 1930’s cottage on the boulevard. Perfection takes time, and Alex, Ryan and Penny recognize that breathing new life into these older homes is a labor of love and an exercise in patience and are confident that, together, they can recreate the magic all over again. n

Recycled Light Bulb Garland & Ornament

Put your burnt-out pre-LED Christmas light bulbs to good use and add kitschy retro decor this holiday season. This vintage Christmas flair is a nod to nostalgia and brings something bright and playful to your home. While opaque bulbs can be used, translucent bulbs like the ones used here, make wonderful suncatchers in south-facing windows.

DIRECTIONS

Tinsel Garland

1. Cut the tinsel ribbon to length, allowing for a generous drop.

2. Fold the ribbon in half to find the midpoint.

3. Add a pea-sized drop of hot glue to the thread of the bulb and attach it to the tinsel at the midpoint.

4. Working out from the center bulb, repeat with another bulb every 5 inches.

Snowflake Suncatcher

1. Cut a 1 ½ inch circle from a scrap piece of cardboard.

2. Glue tinsel ribbon to the cardboard, starting along the outer edge and winding it in a flat spiral inward to completely cover the cardboard.

3. Add a pea-sized drop of hot glue to the thread of a bulb and attach it to the face of the tinselcovered circle. Start with the two bulbs that will be the top and bottom bulbs of the snowflake.

4. Repeat with additional bulbs to finish out the snowflake shape. n

Backed by Experience and Committed to Exceptional Relationships and Success, First International Bank & Trust Helps You Live First

Although First International Bank & Trust (FIBT) is fairly new to Sioux Falls, it’s been a trusted, family-owned community bank since 1910 when it was founded in North Dakota. Without actual international affiliates, the term ‘international’ actually originated from the early days when some of FIBT’s first customers and ag producers wanted to expand their business into Mexico and Canada. After helping to determine ways to market their certified seed potatoes beyond the US borders, ‘international’ was adopted into their name.

Today, FIBT has 31 branch locations spanning North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, and Arizona and offers a full-service insurance agency *(First International Insurance), an investment brokerage company *(First International Investments) as well as a leading electronic payments processor, Kotapay, that provides services to over 100,000 companies nationwide. It is owned by

the Stenehjem Family who originally founded FIBT and continues to be fully engaged in the organization and proudly has the third and fourth generation holding leadership positions.

Their motto, Live First, extends to serving both their clients as well as their own employees. According to Wendy Wills, FIBT’s Chief Experience Officer, “Live First is something that is extremely personal to each person. It is not something that we define but rather something we encourage our customers to do. Living first means living a lifestyle that places importance on what is most meaningful to you. Wendy shares, “We employ the best fi nancial experts who care. BUSTING the Myths of Midwives

Certified nurse-midwives can care for women throughout their reproductive lives

Midwives play a big role in women’s health care before, during, and after pregnancy care. We’re here to dispel any confusion surrounding midwives and the services they provide.

Considering a midwife? Find one near you

Myth: Midwives only offer pregnancy care

The care a midwife can provide goes beyond pregnancy and  childbirth. Midwives provide a personal, relationship-based approach to a full scope of care needs. This includes family planning, postpartum care, menopause care, and gynecological care.

“We can care for women before puberty, before their first period all the way up not only to but through menopause,” says  Megan Burgers, C.N.M., a certified nurse-midwife at Sanford Health.

A midwife can perform your daughter’s first pap smear and be her healthcare provider throughout her life.

“It’s a beautiful continuity of care,” says Burgers.

Myth: Midwives lack formal training

A certified nurse-midwife has a master’s degree in nursing and has been certified with special training in midwifery. When women choose to receive care from a midwife, they have access to the highest standard of care and a variety of options.

In fact, the care a midwife offers is all about options.

“We come at women’s health from a perspective of wholeness and wellness and education and options. And I would say that we’re passionate about providing education and options,” says Burgers. “I love teaching women about how their bodies work so that they can make personalized choices for themselves.”

Myth: You can choose either a midwife or a doctor – not both

At Sanford Health, that myth couldn’t be farther from the truth.

“We are well integrated into the Sanford umbrella, meaning we have easy access to our colleagues,” says Burgers. “Our offices are right around the corner from the OB/GYNs.”

56 SiouxFallsWoman.net | Holiday 2022 sfw | HEALTH

Midwives work hand-in-hand with physicians through collaboration, connection, and referrals. If necessary, midwives can get in touch with experts quickly and easily. They have access to  maternal-fetal medicine ,  obstetrics ,  gynecology,  and  reproductive endocrinology specialists

In short: You can work with both. This also extends to your primary care. You can see a family medicine provider for your general wellness care and a midwife for your OB/GYN needs.

Myth: Midwives only work with low-risk pregnancies

If a woman has a high-risk pregnancy or one with complications, she can still have a nurse-midwife on her care team.

Women can work with maternal-fetal experts to get the specialized care they need. After those appointments, they can pop over to a midwife for all their other pregnancy needs. Even for high-risk pregnancies, midwives can still deliver the baby in many cases.

If you choose to or need to deliver via C-section, your OB/ GYN provider will perform the surgery, but a midwife can offer support in other ways. They’ll be by your side during surgery and beyond.

When caring for pregnancies that seem low-risk, midwives are always on alert for signs of complications. If something does go wrong, help is often just down the hall.

“We can seamlessly discuss what’s going on, what needs to happen and help move towards whatever is necessary to help keep her and the baby safe,” says Burgers.

Pregnancy care you can count on

Having a midwife by your side during your pregnancy gives you access to a variety of care options – not fewer.

“We have longer appointment times to be able to have longer conversations. Not necessarily just medical focused but also discussing the holistic whole person,” says Burgers.

When women feel supported, it can affect every aspect of childbirth.

“Making a woman feel comfortable and safe in labor is vitally important for not only her experience but the labor process itself. It actually influences the hormones and chemicals involved in the labor process. And so, we talk during the pregnancy about comfort options,” says Burgers.

Midwives offer all pain relief options, including medications like epidurals. Women can also explore natural alternatives like water births and hypnobirthing.

“I encourage people to bring up questions and ask for alternatives and see what’s out there,” says Burgers. n

During the coming winter months our immune systems will be challenged by the cold and an array of bacteria. We have two products specific to boost your immune system for protection through winter and prevention of viral infections, like Covid. These two products are Immune Daily Support and n-acetylcysteine (NAC). Immune Daily Support is a formulation of nutrients that have been found to be essential for a healthy immune system, but may be functionally deficient in many individuals. NAC is included in Immune Daily Support and is converted into glutathione, a natural antioxidant to help improve immune function and regulate the immune balance during a viral infection. NAC can be more important when the respiratory system is involved. Consider trying one or both products to maintain wellness during the winter months. Both products are 20% off during December and January. Stop in and we can answer any questions you may have.

The Hearing Loss Effect on Farmers

Madison farmer’s hearing loss leads him to Earlens

Farmers readily admit they are exposed to hazardous noise levels during daily farming. Just how bad is it? An enclosed tractor cab exposes you to about 92 dB of sound; the sound of a squealing pig – 100 dB of sound; and a chain saw – 115dB.

According to the National Institute of Health sounds at or below 70 dBs are generally considered safe while sounds about 85 dB are likely to damage a person’s hearing over time.

Hazardous noise on the farm was behind Madison farmer Steve Strom’s hearing loss.

“I experienced my hearing loss probably about 15 years ago due to noise levels from my farming equipment and tools,” he said.

Strom gave hearing aids a try. In fact, he tried twice with two different brands. But neither were adequate to provide good hearing with the tough conditions and lifestyle required in farming. Strom decided to prioritize his hearing needs and visited with Audiologist, Robert Froke at Midwest ENT & Allergy about Earlens.

Froke, who also wears Earlens, knows first hand the huge difference it makes. ”Wearing Earlens myself makes it all the easier to introduce the concept to patients. The sound quality is second to none,” Froke says.

Earlens is an FDA-approved hearing device that is not an implant, nor a conventional hearing aid, but rather a hearing lens. This tiny lens is placed directly

on the eardrum. The ear tip transmits the broadest range of frequencies of any hearing technology on the market today. It sends high fidelity audio signals directly to the lens, gently vibrating the eardrum and creating enhanced sound.

“I started the Earlens process in 2021. The staff at Midwest ENT & Allergy were very accommodating,” says Strom. He has had his Earlens for over six months and loves everything about his new hearing device.

“Since I farm, my Earlens is exposed to all kinds of elements. They have held up to wind, dust, sweat, moisture, heat, and cold, and they keep working. They have been well worth the time and money invested. And they don’t require batteries.”

Not only is Strom happy that his new Earlens can survive the harsh conditions of farming, but he can also hear better than ever.

“The quality of the sound is crisp and clear, and the wind noise is reduced which means a lot for a farmer.”

His wife and family are happy too. “I can hear my grandkids and my family says I don’t say ‘what’ all the time.”

Earlens is only available in South Dakota through Midwest ENT & Allergy. To see if Earlens is right for you, call Midwest ENT & Allergy to schedule your consultation and demonstration today. You won’t believe the difference. n

– Mindy Heuer, SDFMC, citing a 2019 statewide tobacco survey

“Our South Dakota youth are at serious risk for nicotine addiction,” said Mindy Heuer, RN and Program Manager for the Tobacco Prevention Grant, a state initiative led by the South Dakota Foundation for Medical Care (SDFMC).

“Vaping is a particularly concerning trend. Middle-schoolers in South Dakota are using e-cigarettes at an alarming rate – 8x higher than that in 2011,” she said.

Despite all the science that shows the dangers of smoking, many teens still choose to use tobacco. Tobacco companies know this, so they specifically target youth.

THERE ARE WARNING SIGNS YOUR CHILD MAY BE VAPING: • Increased thirst - vaping dries out your mucous membranes • Excessive craving for salty or spicy foods

Sores in the mouth

Unexplained cough • Unexplained scent of a sweet smell on them

Nationwide, 2.55 MILLION middle and high school students use a tobacco product, according to the 2021 National Youth Tobacco Survey, run by the CDC and FDA. E-cigarettes were young smoker’s most popular choice of product.

In South Dakota, 1 in 4 high schoolers and 1 in 16 middle schoolers regularly use e-cigarettes.
Earlens is well worth the time and money.

THE SOLUTION TO TREATING JAW PAIN AND HEADACHES

Botox has traditionally been used as a beauty-enhancing product, but did you know that it has uses beyond wrinkle and fine-line reduction? Botox functions by temporarily blocking the electrical conduction of nerves to transmit muscle movement through the chemical botulinum toxin (Botox). Due to its ability to temporarily reduce the muscle’s ability to contract, Botox can be effective beyond a wrinkle reducer. As such, Botox can be used to relax the jaw muscles that are responsible for clenching and grinding.

Having extensive knowledge of the

head and neck anatomy, dentists at Great Plains

Dental have been using Botox injections for both cosmetic purposes and to treat jaw pain and headaches for a number of years. “Some of our patients were struggling with jaw pain and headaches and we wanted to help them,” says Dr. McKinney “Botox has been proven to help relieve jaw pain caused by grinding and clenching and we have seen some great results throughout treatment.”

To aid in jaw pain and headaches, Great Plains Dental has implemented a 3D printer giving them the ability to offer patients a

custom-fit appliance faster than traditional methods. The appliance works in conjunction with Botox treatment by protecting the chewing surfaces of the teeth. Using Botox for therapeutic or cosmetic purposes is safe for anyone over the age of 18 and patients can expect the treatment to begin working within one week after treatment, typically with noticeable effects for three months.

Botox for use in the cosmetic application is a service of choice of Great Plains Dental. “We have a lot of patients who see us every six months for preventative cleanings that were seeing a separate provider for their Botox needs,” shares Dr. Waterbury. “Offering Botox at our practice has allowed our patients to get both their dental treatment and their Botox done at the same time.” In addition to the Botox services, Great Plains Dental offers Snoring and Sleep Dentistry, Orthodontic and Invisalign Treatment, Preventative Dentistry, General Restorative Dentistry, Complex Restorative Treatment, and Cosmetic Dentistry including crowns, veneers, and implant services.

Great Plains Dental originated in Sioux Falls, SD as McKinney Family Dentistry in 1997. From a small 4 chair practice and one dentist, Great Plains Dental has grown to 19 chairs and five dentists. While the practice has grown, its commitment to treating every patient like family has remained the same. They offer services that are designed to provide their patients with the best possible dental experience and highest-rated dental care.

LAWYER

Any time a person gets injured by someone else or at work, that person needs a personal injury attorney.  Insurance companies are skilled at handling claims.  There is a significant disparity of power and expertise between the adjuster and injured person.  Having an attorney that is very experienced with handling car accidents, personal injury, and workers’ compensation claims means that the injured person will not get taken advantage of and will be treated fairly. Attorneys Kim Lanham and Jami Bishop with the Johnson, Janklow, Abdallah Law Firm focus exclusively on helping clients that have suffered from an injury. “We handle the entire case so the client’s only focus is to heal and improve,” says Jami. “They no longer have to talk to the insurance company as all of the communication is through us.”

Unlike a lot of firms that have multiple practice areas, Kim and Jami’s practices are unique as their focus is entirely devoted to car accidents, personal injury and workers’ compensation cases. They are dedicated to their clients and strive to provide them with the highest level of representation.

“The best part of representing clients is providing results that can change their lives for the better,” shares Kim. “We walk beside our clients during the darkest times of their lives.” Attorneys Kim Lanham and Jami Bishop cannot change the past or what happened to you or your loved ones, but they can provide compassion, guidance and be passionate advocates when it is needed most.

Marketing Magic:

SOUTH DAKOTA IN NATIONAL SPOTLIGHT!

The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) has honored South Dakota for its accomplishments with the Project Firstline Program (a national collaborative to educate and train healthcare workers on infection prevention). South Dakota was recognized in the national CDC report for Marketing and Promotion of the life-saving program.

“Bold, dynamic, out-of-the-box ideas helped to draw attention to Project Firstline and infection prevention,” says Charlotte Hofer, Director of PR and Marketing. “It’s exciting to see that creativity in healthcare works!”

To diversify their outreach and better target the healthcare worker, SD Project Firstline built partnerships with local media and developed multiple story angles, created a video, QR code, and bookmarks to build interest. They selected local influencers and healthcare champions, even a local magician to draw attention and create excitement.

“The magician performed a ‘break the chain of infection,’ magic trick with city and health leaders. The magic act was the hit of the event and reinforced visually that we can all help break the chain of infection,” says Hofer. “A magician to promote a health program? That’s different, but it worked.”

This multi-pronged approach resulted in an estimated readership of 200,000.

“The newest promotion includes a scavenger hunt,” says Jess Danko, Program Lead for SD Project Firstline.

“Over 50 healthcare and academic institutions across the state have participated in the scavenger hunt so far! It provides a fun and unique opportunity to educate staff on infection prevention. To participate, visit our website at www.sdprojectfirstline.”

DUNKLEY:Kyrie Kyrie

Ribbons with Intention

South Dakota artist’s work is a form of activism and connection for the Native American community

Han, Mitakuyapi! Wasicu ia Kyrie Dunkley emakiyapi, (Hello My Relatives! My English name is Kyrie Dunkley) Dakhota ia Wichapi Iyoyunpa Wi emakiyapi ye. (My Dakota name is Shining Star Woman)

For Kyrie Dunkley introducing herself is about more than just telling someone her name. It’s sharing where she came from – Oceti Sakowin (The Seven Council Fires) referring to collectively the Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota-speaking people. But where she “came from” isn’t just the location of where she lives, but rather what defines her.

“I start with a greeting, introducing myself in Dakota then English. I provide the name of the tribe to which I am enrolled along with my immediate family origin. It’s a more personal way introductions are done as Native Americans.”

South Dakota is home to nine reservations: Cheyenne River; Crow Creek; Flandreau, Lower Brule; Oglala; Rosebud; Sisseton Wahpeton; Standing Rock, and Yankton. “My mother is Oglala and my father is Sisseton Wahpeton, and Spirit Lake.”

Kyrie is proud to be Dakota/Lakota and sees it as a source of inspiration. The 32-year-old Indigenous stylist, artist, and designer creates ribbon

skirts and shirts – historical and traditional clothing that has symbolized Native heritage for over 400 years. Branded Shinin Star Style, the brightly colored ribbon skirts are traditional pieces of clothing for many Native American women and girls as they honor their heritage. Interestingly, the traditional ribbon skirt was spotlighted when Interior Secretary Deb Haaland wore it for her swearing-in ceremony in 2021.

“The Native clothing is part of an evolution. From the buckskin attire to cloth and ribbons, it is similar to the evolution of the star quilts and buffalo robes,” she explains.

Kyrie’s skirts are mostly A-line, usually satin or cotton, and have layers of ribbons. The ribbons sewn onto skirts are multiplecolored; each color has a special significance to the wearer. Custom pieces sometimes include very intricate applique work.

Kyrie calls her skirts “wearable art.”

“Each is one-of-a-kind, handmade, and a form of highly expressive art. I use lots of monochromes, and the colors are intentional. The skirt is meant to inspire confidence and offer identity and connection. The Indigenous ribbon work always tells a story. Each collection has a particular theme. Her off-the-rack items can be found at Sweetgrass Soapery/All Walks Trading Post in downtown Sioux Falls where she sells her ribbon skirts, shirts, and DIY ribbon skirt kits.

“The ribbon skirt today for me represents strength and resiliency.”

Kyrie says her upbringing played a big part in her passion to maintain this traditional craftwork. “I come from a large family of aunts and uncles. My Hunka (adopted) Mom, Robin Bowen, raised me until I was 14. I moved many times, and I attended a new school every two years. Robin encouraged Oceti Sakowin teachings and history at every school we attended through exhibitions –storytelling, songs, and dance. I learned a lot about my Native culture and the meaning of having a tiospaye (extended family) by gathering consistently with other indigenous families in the area. I danced at powwows, participated in drum ceremonies, watched my aunties put together regalia and I learned how to bead pens.”

Though Kyrie watched others create traditional clothing, she didn’t start sewing until she “entered motherhood.” “It was then that I realized I wanted to pass on to my child the same cultural experiences and provide him with a strong foundation of selfidentity to fall back on. As a traditional Native mother, I started nesting by making his baby moccasins and a star quilt.”

While her Hunka Mom Robin influenced Kyrie to embrace her Native roots, it was her late husband Matthew, Sr. who inspired her to be bold and follow her passions. “Matthew was a Red Lake enrolled tribal member. He was an artist, musician, actor, activist, and 10-year war veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. He always told me: ‘Stop hesitating, nothing changes if nothing changes.’ When my husband passed away in May of 2018, I suddenly became a widow with a two-year-old son. I turned to sewing to help me work through my grief. During this time, I

learned a lot about mental health, historical trauma, and intergenerational trauma. Matthew’s inspiring words always stayed with me, pushing me to get out of my comfort zone.”

Looking back, Kyrie now realizes it was Robin and Matthew who together showed her the deeper meaning of the Indigenous culture. Their influence guided her determination to preserve its history and pass it along.

Before COVID-19, Kyrie was the afterschool Native Youth Club activities teacher for the Multi-Cultural Center in Sioux Falls. It was during the quarantine in May of 2020 she put together her first clothing collection and presented a Virtual Fashion Show Fundraiser dedicated to Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) in partnership with South Dakota Urban Indian Health (SDUIH) with the funds going to a local Indigenous women’s leadership group.

These days, Kyrie is finding more ways to bring attention to the longstanding craft and Native culture by instructing ribbon skirt-making workshops along with sewing for Native high school seniors as a way of celebration. “I consider myself involved in ‘Indianpreneurship” as my eye for design isn’t limited to just ribbon work.”

This last year she has immersed herself in everything Native. In May, she organized a pop-up round dance in Sioux Falls sponsored by the A.I.M. Medicine Wheel COVID Prevention and Healing Project. She was an emerging fashion designer and model for the 1st annual First American Museum and Teton Trade Cloth Fashion Summit this past summer. She modeled again for the “Walking in Beauty” Fashion show at the Black Hills PowWow 2022. She is also a board member of the Indigenous Nations United 501 (c) non-profit as well as a teaching artist for the South Dakota Arts Council. Recently, she played a part in the ITN film “Uprising” directed by Christopher Forbes, and was the Indigenous stylist for most of the native actors on set.

She views this new stage of her life as a form of activism and connection for the Native community. “Everything I now do is a physical expression of who I am,” says Kyrie.

From fashion shows to teaching basic cultural skills outlined in the SD Office of Indian Education Essential Understandings and Standards, she embraces her Dakota/ Lakota culture as it ribbons through her life. “I now teach sewing and ribbon skirt class presentations and share cultural stories. I especially enjoy working with schools and the community to provide sewing services to preserve our culture and encourage our current generation to continue indigenizing their spaces through expressive art. Sewing is everything; it helped mend my soul.”

For Kyrie the ribbon art carries a metaphor of intention –that happiness is a tight ribbon that holds life together. Her advice: “Do what makes your soul shine.” n

What's New: Creator's Kids Daycare Center

Christian daycare prioritizes quality staff and personalized care

Creator’s Kids Daycare Center is one of the newest Christian daycares designed to help meet the growing need for quality daycare services in the Sioux Falls area.

Located near 77th and Minnesota, Creator’s Kids opened in October 2021 with a mission to provide exceptional childcare in a Christ-like environment through qualified teachers, personalized care, and nutrition. According to Molly Okerlund, founder, and active managing owner, the vision for this childcare and learning academy came a few years ago after many years of serving the community as a foster parent.

“I was provided a lens into the many different childcare options and thought there must be a better model for

childcare and early childhood learning. My vision is honestly from God and He has put my hands to use in building a better model. My career in accounting told me the numbers just don't work at the current price model of the typical childcare facility. So, we designed something different.”

Molly describes Creator's Kids as a daycare with better education, better nutrition, and more personalized care.

“We have more qualified, educated, and experienced teachers facilitating an organized and professional curriculum in a Christ-like learning environment. Our modular design supports small classroom sizes and higher teacher-to-student ratios to create an environment for more personalized care,” she said.

Merry Christmas!

And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God. And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.

DURING THE MENTAL

HEALTH

Holiday Season

Stress and depression can ruin your holidays and hurt your health. Being realistic, planning ahead and seeking support can help ward off stress and depression.

Don’t over-commit.

As we prepare for the holiday season, we tend to set the bar impossibly high for ourselves. Reassess your to-do list to focus on what really needs to be done. Enjoy this time – don’t expect perfection. It’s also okay to say “no.” Your friends and family will understand.

Ask for help.

The holiday season is packed with a number of activities and responsibilities, which can leave a person feeling overwhelmed. Asking for help can do wonders for your stress levels around the holidays.

Remember what really matters.

As the holiday season picks up momentum and starts to become hectic, be purposeful in reminding yourself what really matters. Whether you volunteer for your favorite charity or go out of your way to give a compliment or smile to another, remember what is most important to you.

Maintain healthy habits.

Holiday weight gain is common and can be stressful. Be purposeful in continuing to eat healthy, drink water, exercise, get plenty of sleep, and engage in other healthy activities.

Acknowledge your feelings.

The holiday season brings up a lot of mixed emotions. It is important to be honest, both with yourself and others. If you are feeling upset or overwhelmed, tell someone. Trying to force yourself to be happy will only lead to feeling worse as the days go by.
