inter is a lovely season, especially over the holidays, but as time advances, the cold tends to drag on for what seems like forever. Kids, who flourish with physical activity, can begin to become lethargic finding themselves spending more and more time indoors submerging themselves in electronics. Playing in the snow is great exercise – but only lasts as long as the snow – thus opening the door for video games and scrolling for easy entertainment. With technology being so prevalent in our daily lives, it’s easy to fall into the habit of sitting and scrolling. Our lives are more automated now, although many adults grew up without a cell phone in their pocket, they often catch themselves forming attachments and habits surrounding tech activities. How can we give our children and adults the fire and desire to do other things? I remember elementary school and bringing home the flyers advertising various summer camps in my weekly folder as

springtime approached. I have fun memories from attending Girl Scouts Camp and spending days outside doing group activities, games, and crafts. When we build fond memories, it’s easier for us to build healthy habits because we desire to go back—if our kids find themselves filled with enthusiasm and joy for the outdoors, we might find them rebuilding a healthy balance of activity in their daily lives. Perhaps it’s time to dive into camps! According to the American Camp Association, children develop social skills, self-respect, and community living skills when they attend camp. Camps are designed to instill children with a sense of excitement toward learning, not only getting them moving but also getting them thinking and growing. Attending a camp helps build peer relations, opening up children’s minds to the world around them and allowing them to experience compassion surrounding their community. Camps also provide a positive environment that helps children find their passions and explore

their interests. Camps can give them tools for anticipating options for their future, along with the carefree fun they should be experiencing in childhood. Whether it’s a science camp, a sports camp, a day camp, or an overnight camp, kids forge bonds and memories that will keep them curious, committed to experiencing, exploring, and wanting more. At camp, kids develop a sense of self-respect, community respect, and environmental respect—all incredibly valuable for helping our children become active, wholesome, worldly individuals.

With the chilly wind and traces of snow still on the ground, summer may seem far away, making now the perfect time to start exploring camp options. Perhaps have a discussion with your kids, talk about their interests, and determine what activities or categories of education seem to spark the most intrigue in their young minds. Even if a camp you discover and settle on is educational-focused and indoors, getting your kids involved in an activity that can provide them with positive memories will last them a lifetime and broaden their horizons. Instilling a mindset that is comfortable with trying new things, learning, growing, and exploring will help them develop as individuals. Camps of any kind will allow them to flourish as they grow older. Camping experiences will help them develop resourcefulness and responsibility. Camps are instrumental in shaping them in ways that will reflect on their daily lives. Utilize this winter downtime to explore camp possibilities with your children. Find a camp that fulfills their yearning for more great memories and experiences. n

Winter Date Ideas in South Dakota A playful romp through the snow By Chellee Unruh

W

inter may be the season for cozy nights by the fire, but that doesn’t mean you and your significant other have to hibernate. In fact, there’s a whole world of wintry fun waiting to be explored. So, ditch the Netflix and get ready to rekindle the romance with these playful date ideas:

HIT THE SLOPES: Whether you are a seasoned skier or a novice beginner, a day on the powdery white stuff is guaranteed to get your hearts racing. Shred fresh powder at Great Bear Ski Valley, or make a weekend getaway to Terry Peak and conquer those Black Hills. If Skiing isn’t your bag - both sites also offer tubing, snowboarding, and great viewing and beverage areas. WINTER WONDERLAND HIKE: Revisit your favorite parks in the winter for an amazing hiking experience. Familiar parks like Good Earth are beautiful in the spring, summer, and fall, but during the winter, the park transforms into a sparkling white wonderland. Take a hike along the frozen waters, breathe in the crisp air, and experience nature at its finest. SNOWSHOE SERENADE: Ditch the pavement with just a short 45-minute drive south on Highway 115 and head to Newton Hills State Park. Strap on snowshoes and explore miles of pristine trails, reliving South Dakota’s glacial past. Sticking a little closer to Sioux Falls, you can visit The Outdoor Campus and trek the beautiful and easy snowshoeing trail along the Big Sioux River. 18

FEEL GREAT. LOOK AMAZING. The real solution for real people to take control of their health and well-being. For many individuals, as we age, we experience fatigue, joint pain, difficulty with sleep, decreased libido, and weight gain amid a multitude of other symptoms. We are led to believe this is the “normal” expectations of aging. However, for Mary J. Jordan, a Certified Family Nurse Practitioner, these symptoms are usually given a band aid with prescription medications. At Encompass Wellness, we get to the root cause of the problem with a simple blood test.

GLIDING GRACEFULLY (OR WOBBLY): Lace up your skates and hit the rink! Scheels IcePlex offers indoor elegance, Sioux Falls Parks offers 6 outdoor rinks with warming houses, and the future Ice Ribbon in Downtown Sioux Falls all promise open-air laughter - and maybe a few wobbly stumbles. SNOWMOBILE SYMPHONY: Eastern South Dakota becomes your winter playground. Imagine the engine’s roar with the snow crunching beneath you as you race across 1,500 miles of groomed trails. This is a snowmobiler’s paradise for both speed demons and leisurely cruisers. WINTER GAMES: If you’re not a fan of being out in the cold, don’t worry - there are plenty of ways to stay warm and have a blast indoors. One of our favorite ways to do this is by catching a hockey or basketball game. Sioux Falls is home to two amazing teams: the Skyforce and the Stampede. The Skyforce is a professional basketball team, while the Stampede is a junior hockey team. Both teams have packed schedules during the winter months, so you’re sure to find a time and venue that fits your interests. No matter what activity you choose, the key to a magical winter date is all about spending quality time together. So put away your phones, focus on each other, and don’t be afraid to be a little silly. After all, laughter is the best way to stay warm! n

According to Mary, “As we age, we become hormone deficient.” This hormone imbalance for women leads to a lack of well-being, fatigue, weight gain, joint pain, brain fog, lack of libido, and mood changes like irritability, anxiety, and depression, urinary incontinence, and night sweats. For men, they experience a decrease in libido and sexual performance, sleep and mood are affected, muscle and strength decrease, fatigue, and weight gain. “Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) has changed the lives of many of my patients.” In addition to BHRT, she has a successful weight loss program using the FDA-approved weight-loss medication called semaglutide (Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro) which slows gastric emptying, increases insulin sensitivity, and suppresses appetite. In fact, it has proven to be so effective that it is one of the most popular weight-loss therapies sweeping across the nation. She shares, “One of the most common catalysts for unwanted weight gain is hormone imbalance. Hormone deficiency can make losing weight much harder and recovery time after working out much longer. She continues, after starting BHRT patients start feeling a difference within 2-4 weeks and are amazed at how much better they feel. Paired with the weight loss program patients report feeling like they are 20 again!” Encompass Wellness provides adult primary care services, youth-enhancing therapies including Botox and filler, IV Hydration, and nutraceuticals.

e v i t a e r C Wedding Ideas! By Charlotte Hofer

E

very couple wants their wedding day to be special. From wedding décor to creative ceremony ideas that take your breath away, integrating your own unique ideas to personalize your wedding is a perfect way to create that one-of-a-kind event, and to ensure that your guests always remember the fun they had! Here are some ideas to get you started. THEMES. Let your interests and hobbies inspire you. Think about what you both love. Are there experiences you have had together that you would want to incorporate? If you love travel, theatre, art, sports – these can be a great starting point to help guide you in choosing a wedding theme. For example, a bride and groom that loves fishing might choose to have their wedding on a pontoon, with fishing décor such as centerpieces that have live goldfish swimming in a bowl, a cake topper of the bride catching the groom on a fishing pole, even invitations: “Hook, Line & Sinker, We’re Getting Married.” You can incorporate just a feel for your hobbies and interests, or go big and go bold. A wedding I saw at a Minneapolis hotel had a Star Wars theme – guests were dressed as their favorite Star Wars characters! For the processional, the wedding party walked in to the theme from Star Wars! The bride even carried a light saber bouquet for this intergalactic wedding!

A couple who are movie buffs incorporated a glamorous Hollywood theme for their wedding. They selected a theatre venue and created life size moviestyle posters to line the lobby -with photos of themselves and family. They even starred in their own video and played it during the ceremony to welcome guests! While you don’t have to go to this extreme, incorporating a bit of personality into your special day can make your wedding fun and memorable. Don’t think about what everyone else does or what’s traditional. What can make your day uniquely yours? Genuine moments and shared experiences are what create the strongest bonds. ORIGINAL SAVE-THE-DATE CARDS. You can design your own save-the-date card, with a photo that reflects you and your partner’s personalities. Print as a refrigerator magnet to help people remember the date. Or use a newspaperthemed template to tell your story. Not only can you announce your wedding plans, but it gives you room to add personal details – such as your proposal story, how you two met, or photos of you two as a couple. Or, instead of cards, create elegant coasters for the coffee table – with your monogram or a favorite quote imprinted on one side, and wedding details on the other. Whichever save-the-date format you choose, it’s your chance to make a memorable first impression! GUESTBOOK. Instead of just signing a guest book at the reception, leave a glass bowl and post-it notes and ask guests to write a brief note (such as a favorite memory of the bride and groom, an inspirational thought or SiouxFallsWoman.net

21

bit of advice) that you can read a year later, on your first anniversary. Or ask guests to write short notes directly onto an object - such as a mirror, wall hanging, a wooden heart - that you can later turn into home décor or convert into a cherished keepsake. It creates a wonderful record of everyone who came and their messages to you.

FLOWERS. Imagine a bouquet of gorgeous blooms tied together with black-and-white ribbons, and the words written on the ribbons are taken from wishes and notes from the couple’s grandmothers. Not only would this create a fresh and dramatic bouquet at the event, but heartfelt messages from grandparents would also be a lasting legacy to enjoy through the years. Add unexpected elements to your bouquet - like feathers or accent lights - to give it your own touch. You can even hand out a “tribute bouquet” at the reception – to recognize and toast someone who has made a strong impact on your life. WEEKDAY WEDDINGS. Get married on a Thursday. It comes with big advantages: you can save a lot of money on the venue cost, and there’s more availability. Venues are often booked a year in advance for the weekends. One bride said that having her wedding on a Thursday instead of a Saturday not only meant she could have her wedding a year sooner but saved her HALF the price! CENTERPIECES. Think of experiences you’ve had as a couple that have brought you the most joy. Then, recreate that in the wedding details so guests can have a glimpse into what makes you happiest. For example, a couple that loves to travel used photos from their trips to create centerpieces – from the remote Patagonian wilds to a Tuscany vineyard. Another couple who are wine enthusiasts served wine bottles at each table with custom labels - their own photo was pasted on the label! SEATING. Who says everyone has to sit in rows for the ceremony? How about having guests sit in a circle or semicircle around the bridal party? Not only can it make you more visible to guests, but it creates a feeling of intimacy by making people feel more included in the ceremony. While we’re at it, who says you need folding chairs? A friend told me of a wedding ceremony she attended in an elegantly decorated barn where all the guests sat on hay bales! CREATE YOUR OWN TRADITIONS. Is there a tradition you can start? For example, on the wedding day you could have the bridesmaids and groomsmen write a message to the bride on the bottom of her shoe. The tradition is that whoever’s name does not wear off by the end of the night will be the next to get married! In short, the sky’s the limit. Small and unexpected details can make your day the most memorable. The idea is to make your day customized to you – personalized, romantic, and unforgettable – and to share who you two are as a couple with the guests who have come to celebrate your love. n

g n i c a Embr Your Natural Hair By Amanda Zanger

mbracing your natural beauty and reconnecting to your natural roots is one of the most therapeutic thing you can do for yourself this year. Fortunately, for every hair texture, there are specialized products available that you absolutely need to incorporate into your hair care routine. If you’re like me, I am always getting my hair done at the salon or using heat products that damage my natural hair texture. Check out the following tips, tricks, and products to get you back to your natural hair – no matter your hair type. If you’re trying to restore and repair your hair, follow these steps. First, ask your hairdresser to snip off those split ends. Then, use products that are ultrahydrating and strengthening to keep your strands as strong and healthy as possible. Now let’s get into hair texture and styling suggestions: Straight hair seems easy, right? Those of you who have ultra-fine and straight hair, probably deal with flat and flyaway locks.

3 Eyelash enhancement 3 Classic, smokey or ombré eyeliner 3 Lip blushing or tints, full matte lips 3 A number of different eyebrow styles to include powder, ombré, and combo

An amplifying volumizing shampoo/ conditioner, root lifter, and smoothing cream, combination will keep those straight hair strands perfectly in place. Wavy hair is beautiful and coveted, but can also be super unpredictable and unruly. Frizziness and tangled tresses seem to be every wavy-haired girl’s worst enemy. To combat this, experts suggest pairing an anti-frizz shampoo/ conditioner, hair oil, and dry texture finishing spray, to help tame those curls and enhance your natural texture. Now let’s talk about curly hair! Women with curly hair struggle with inconsistent curls that just never look the same twice. If you’re looking for consistency, anti-frizz shampoo with any conditioner that contains nourishing jojoba seed oil will help moisturize wavy and curly hair achieving that perfect and natural look! Experts also recommend using a defrizzer gel to attain that lightweight and strong-hold definition. Lastly, we have coily hair, which is often the most misunderstood hair texture. The key to nourishing coily hair is moisture. An ultra-hydrating hair regimen is a necessity that includes a moisture-rich shampoo/conditioner, moisture mask or pudding, and twist and coil jelly for softer, smoother, springy curls and coils. This season, embrace your natural beauty and use these tips to reclaim your natural, beautiful roots! n

T

his article is about the hottest trends for the upcoming year, and I hope you are as excited as I am!

Let’s start with shoes. Whimsical and elegant design, namely, satin mules with a pointed toes adorned with decorative embellishment, they will become the most requested shoe style this spring, the perfect choice for an evening out – or dancing! For jewelry - gold and silver earrings, necklaces, and bracelets that range from dainty to bold statement- setting pieces are an absolute essential. Many fashion gurus suggest a ‘donut earring’ set, a fat hoop design with a glittering crystal stacked in the middle. To elevate your aesthetic, try wearing stacks and stacks of rings paired together, like rings having vintage undertones that work harmoniously. If you’re going for a sophisticated look, seek out dresses that are mixes of velvet and silk to achieve a chic, vintage-inspired style. As we know, the Midwest can be very cold for an unpredictable amount of any year. Invest in a faux fur leather trimmed jacket to enhance any outfit and complete your sophisticated flare. To finish your wardrobe, pair the on-trend, small beaded shoulder bag with any outfit. The upcoming styles for 2024 are timeless, affordable, and versatile, and will serve you well through all seasons. n

TO BE (AT HOME) OR NOT TO BE (AT HOME): There are a lot of media messages for seniors designed to convince them that living in their own home is a great blessing and one that should be maintained at all cost. Typically, these messages come from home health companies that are touting their services. For many people, the idea of living out their days in the comfortable and secure surroundings of their home is attractive, especially if there are others around to share their lives. This is where the home health workers come in. A couple hours of care and attention each day can make a difference in the quality of life of seniors and many families have taken that route. What does this service cost these families?

At the low end, about $22/hour. Most services have a two hour minimum, so $44 per visit is typical. In a month this runs to $1,320. If a second daily visit is necessary, this doubles, and some people require much more than that so the costs run up rapidly. Families try to compensate by providing as much help as possible. Kids love their parents, so as the needs grow they step up more and they don’t mind.

Eventually, however, the care of the parents and their home overwhelms the family resources and alternatives are considered. There are always two needs that motivate: One is care of the person, the second is care for the home. Home health workers, as great as they are, don’t mow the grass, clean the bath, scoop the snow, or fix the whatever. We do. Because we do, Washington Crossing has become the home of over 100 happy seniors. Not surprisingly, as much as they like us, their families like us more.

SHINING A LIGHT ON EFFECTIVE AUTISM TREATMENTS FOR CHILDREN WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER In 2023, the CDC reported that approximately 1 in 36 children in the U.S. is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), according to 2020 data. Boys are four times more likely to be diagnosed with autism than girls. Applied Behavior Analysis, also known ABA therapy is a research-based treatment that has shown to be effective for individuals with a variety of behavioral and mental health conditions. Considered more comprehensive than early intervention, it has proven itself a winner, leading the American Academy of Pediatrics to recommend it. InterAct is an ABA provider in Sioux Falls at 1507 E. 69th. Alison Hulshof, co-owner of InterAct, says ABA is one of the best therapies for children with autism and other related developmental disorders. “InterAct believes that early identification and early intervention services are critical in helping kids with autism develop,” said Alison. “Early intervention through ABA focuses on improving skills and shrinking gaps in skill development between your child and your typical peers.” ABA is intense. But providing high-quality, early intervention services using ABA, kids with autism can learn and grow. ABA uses consistency in teaching strategies in a reinforcing and fun environment for kids. In ABA therapy, it is critical to have strong family involvement. An ABA program for your child is developed by a behavior analyst and will be delivered through

a team of registered technicians (RBT’s) to help your child grow and develop skills and decrease barriers to learning. ABA has its benefits. “ABA helps a child with autism increase positive interactions with family members and peers and, in turn, will improve the quality of life for the family,” said Alison. Before seeking ABA services, Alison says it is critical that your child receives a medical diagnosis. “if you do not know how to go about navigating to get the appropriate medical diagnosis, feel free to reach out to us, and we will help you find a provider. A diagnosis helps a family move forward with the right services,” she said. ABA is not a cure and doesn’t try to be, but it makes life better she says. “If you suspect your child is showing symptoms of autism and are concerned, it is important to remember the sooner you SEEK OUT HELP, the sooner your child can start growing and gaining skills.”

t is easy to neglect cooking full meals in the winter. Cooking can be time-consuming and feel like a daunting task in the evenings when the sun sets so early. Finding easy recipes for comforting, warm meals that the whole family can enjoy can also be difficult, but soups provide a simple solution to preparing meals in the winter. Most soup recipes are hearty and palatable for almost everyone. With the right recipes, your comforting soup can also be a healthy mix of vitamins and fiber for your family. Luckily, soups are generally a bunch of vegetables, protein, and spices mixed with a liquid base. Because of how soups are cooked, they easily retain the healthy vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that typically cook out of foods when baked. Options for a large variety of comforting, flavorful soups are endless, but here are a few recipes sure to please your family. n

Recipes for delicious homemade soups By Jayci Holsing

Roasted Vegetable Soup

Recipe courtesy of kitchensanctuary.com INGREDIENTS: • 1 Large sweet potato (peeled and cut into chunks) • 1 Red bell pepper (deseeded and chopped into chunks) • 1 Yellow bell pepper (deseeded and chopped into chunks) • 2 Medium carrots (peeled and chopped) • 1 Red onion (peeled and chopped into wedges) • 3 cloves garlic (left in skin) • 3 tbsp olive oil

• 1/2 tsp ground black pepper • 1/2 tsp ground cumin • 1/2 tsp paprika • 4¼ c vegetable stock • 1/3 c grated parmesan cheese • 1/2 tsp salt

TO SERVE: • 2 tbsp grated parmesan • A few sprigs of fresh thyme Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Place the chunks of sweet potato, bell peppers, carrots, and garlic cloves (skin on) on a large baking tray. Drizzle olive oil over the vegetables and sprinkle on the salt, pepper, cumin, and paprika. Toss together using your hands. Place in the oven for 20 minutes, turning everything over after 10 minutes. After baking the vegetables, add the red onion wedges and toss everything together to coat the onion in the oil. Place back into the oven for another 10-12 minutes until the vegetables are tender and slightly caramelized. Remove from the oven. Put a couple of tablespoons of the roasted vegetables to one side and place the rest in a large saucepan. Squeeze the garlic out of their skins. Pour in the stock and bring it all to a boil and simmer for five minutes. Turn off the heat and blend with a hand blender. Stir in the parmesan and season to taste. Serve topped with the rest of the roasted vegetables, a sprinkle of grated parmesan, and a few sprigs of fresh thyme.

Leah Mahoney

Beautifully Organized How to display your treasures for both form and function Story and photos by Margaret Pennock

M

ixing modern finds with traditional and vintage items into something unique, functional, and beautiful is challenging at best. At worst, it can look like a mishmash of unorganized and haphazard ‘stuff’. For Leah Mahoney, it is one of her favorite things to do.

Blessed with talented skills in styling, Leah has honed her abilities from prior work in merchandising and building displays to organizing her kitchen on an all-new level since moving into a historic bungalow-style home in Canton. “I learned how to balance a display, to consider height and layers in a 3D area, as well as the importance of spacing and proportion.” One of the favorite areas she has decorated and organized is her lovely and original butler’s pantry. She notes, “I didn’t even know what a butler’s pantry was until we looked at this house but it was definitely a selling point for me. I absolutely love it.” Today, it’s filled with family heirlooms and precious finds that Leah and her husband, Patrick, have enjoyed discovering in thrift and antique stores over the years. In addition to being decorative, it is also important that each piece has a function. “I buy things I love. I’m always drawn first to vintage items, but I have no problem buying new items if they fit with the look I want and I have a place for them. It all comes down to choosing items that I love, and items that are also usable every day.” n

Start by clearing as much out of the area you’re working on as you can, even the things that are going to stay. Try to make as much room as you can, because there is always a giant mess before it gets better. Clear the space you’re working on so you can start fresh and see new ways to use what you have. Try to lay everything you may want to use in the same place so you can visualize it all. Then, when you do start putting things together, start with height and bases. I’ve been collecting things like vintage boxes, little cupcake stands, and various risers that people don’t even notice, but they make all the difference. For the kitchen, you can use old cutting boards, cake plates, and cookbooks to change heights. Put the larger items in first, items you know you will need in that space, and add the smaller items in later. If you’re stuck, take a picture with your phone and look at it. It’s the weirdest thing, but for some reason, seeing it on a phone screen enables me to see what I’m missing, or what’s feeling off. Then, when things are close to how you want them, walk away. Come back later or the next day with fresh eyes and see if there’s anything it needs and do some adjusting.

A Uniquely

INTERESTING Home

A young couple works to make a “true home” where family and friends can visit and celebrate their coming home. Story and photos by Margaret Pennock

F

or Mikayla and Brett Heronimus, finding a unique home wasn’t easy. Moving back to the Sioux Falls area in March of 2023, after living in Des Moines for several years, their house hunt was a bit more challenging than they anticipated. According to Mikayla, “When we were house hunting we saw the same layouts over and over again. The moment we walked into this house we could tell this was a completely different layout than the rest of them. It felt like we could really make this house our own in that sense. Plus it checked all the boxes; big kitchen, the number of bedrooms and bathrooms we wanted, and it even had a separate office, without having to compromise a bedroom.” Built in 2000, the lovely ranch home looks fairly typical from the street. However, once you enter the door that’s when typical is off the table. Soaring ceilings greet you in the foyer as a centrally located staircase leads to the fully finished basement. The living area flows around the staircase which means there is hardly a square angle to be found.

SiouxFallsWoman.net

43

A work in progress to update the early 2000s decor, the couple has been mindful of keeping what works and incorporating it into their updated vision. “We really liked the layout and didn’t want to change it. What we did want to do was to cosmetically update some of the features which included the flooring and the kitchen.” Mikayla laughs, “These angles weren’t the easiest when we replaced the flooring but it turned out really beautifully.” The largest change to date beyond the luxury vinyl flooring which is hard to detect from real hardwood is their kitchen. She shares, “Once we were serious about the kitchen we began looking at different contractors in the Sioux Falls area. The kitchen cabinets were in great shape and the layout of the kitchen was very functional. For us, it didn’t make sense to do a complete remodel and gutting. We ultimately decided on working with Kitchen Tune-Up to help us with updating the kitchen.” She continues, “Susan and Steve were very knowledgeable and easy to work with. They explained their process and were there to answer any and all questions we had. It was really helpful to have them discuss the pros and cons of painting versus refacing the cabinets. Steve worked with us to change some minor functional things in the kitchen like moving our garbage pull out to a different area of the kitchen that made more sense, removing an extra shelf in the cabinets that previously housed a microwave, and building a custom range hood. Susan was great with the design and I was happy to have her input when looking at updating the kitchen countertop. It was a large part of the kitchen budget and she offered great insight. I was amazed at all the little details that go into remaking a kitchen. Obviously there were the big items such as deciding on new door styles, and colors, and countertops. But picking out the hardware, the range hood, the new appliances, the sink, the faucet, the tile, the grout color, and the type of grout was at times overwhelming. You spend so much time in the kitchen you want it all to be perfect. At times it was overwhelming as I went down lots of rabbit holes while researching information online about every little detail. I’m ashamed to admit how many different threads I read on ReddIt and Houzz before deciding on tile and grout!”

44

February/March 2024

Directly off the kitchen is a lovely dining nook nestled into a custom bump out surrounded by windows where Mikayla loves to enjoy her morning coffee. A stunning run of cabinets that Mikayla found online and Brett assembled is a perfect complement to their clean design approach at the far end of the kitchen area. A formal dining space continues the circular flow into their main upstairs living space which is complimented by a lovely and muchused gas fireplace. “Now that it’s winter I’m really enjoying the upstairs living room with the fireplace. Nothing beats cozying up in a blanket and watching a movie with the fireplace on. In our last house, we had a wood-burning fireplace which was beautiful but so much work for a fire. We’re enjoying just pressing a button to turn the gas fireplace on and off instead of having to tend to an actual fire,” Mikayla shares. Their dog Noah also loves the fireplace and has made it his favorite place in the home.

I’ve enjoyed slowly making this place our own and incorporating our style throughout it. I enjoy going to different thrift stores around town or searching Facebook Marketplace and browsing for different decor. It’s been fun getting inspired by different pieces. But it’s definitely a slow process which can also be challenging. - Mikayla Heronimus

For Brett who works from home, a large office filled with natural light and custom built-ins was his favorite feature of the home. He shares, “This really made my decision easy when we were looking. It’s a great place to be able to work from.” Mikayla appreciated the fact that it still allowed them to have four bedrooms so that they could grow into the house without having the office infringe on bedroom space. Their primary bedroom is also unique with double French doors leading into the spacious bedroom and large ensuite. Their appreciation for clean and minimalistic design continues in their bedroom with furnishings that are a modern take on mid-century design. Again, the unique flow-through design continues with the ensuite flowing directly into their large and incredibly functional closet. Another bedroom that Mikayla is currently using as her office completes the main level along with a mudroom that connects the home to a large triple-car garage. The basement while lovely and finished, hasn’t been their priority in the 10 months they’ve called this home. Mikayla notes, “The basement layout is definitely interesting; it’s a giant circle of a living room with two bedrooms, a bathroom, and a storage room down there. We haven’t focused too much on it since we moved in but I’m excited to make good use of the living area space in the future.” n

Unraveling the Mystery of Chronic Cough

DON’T IGNORE IT! By Virginia Olson

C

hronic cough can be a persistent and frustrating condition impacting the daily lives of many individuals. A chronic cough lasting more than 8 weeks can indicate underlying causes such as respiratory issues, seasonal allergies, sinus disease, gastrointestinal disorders such as reflux, or disorders of the voice and swallowing. “We routinely diagnose and treat patients with chronic cough,” says Dr. Micah Likness, an ENT physician, at Midwest ENT & Allergy. “Diagnosis often involves a thorough medical history, physical examination, and diagnostic tests that include evaluating the nose, throat, and voice box with a camera scope. This is great as the patient can see exactly where and what the issue is while watching it on the screen.” As we navigate the causes of chronic cough, it is essential to explore the often-overlooked link to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). 18-27% of adults will suffer from reflux during their lifetime. Initial treatment often involves lifestyle and dietary changes, coupled with medications. Four main types of medications include antacids to neutralize the stomach acid, H1 blockers (Pepcid, Zantac) or PPI medications (Prilosec, Nexium) to prevent acid production and then alginates to prevent stomach acid refluxing into the esophagus or voice box. Failure to improve warrants further testing.

Infections like chronic sinusitis may also contribute to persistent coughing. Sinusitis leads to mucus buildup, throat irritation, an increased sensitivity to the airways, and post-nasal drainage. Addressing the root cause is vital for resolution and often involves sinus irrigations, antibiotics, or other targeted medical therapies. Patients who fail medical management can be improved with minimally invasive surgical procedures in-office, or traditional sinus surgery in the operating room. Additionally, environmental factors such as allergens, tobacco smoke, and air pollution can exacerbate chronic cough conditions. Patients can be offered allergy testing to include environmental and food allergens. Treatment can further be directed at the specific allergen through allergy shots or sublingual drops. Chronic cough is not just a nuisance, but a symptom of underlying health issues. Timely and accurate diagnosis, along with comprehensive management, is the key to alleviating and improving the overall well-being of individuals struggling with a persistent cough.

Dr. Micah Likness

“That cough should not be ignored,” says Dr. Likness. “Talk to the doctors at Midwest ENT & Allergy about it. You do have options, and best of all, relief. You don’t have to just live with it. We can help. Call us to schedule a consultation today, so you can feel better this year!” n

Hydrated? Are You Staying

By Jessalyn Holsing

Y

ou’ve seen and heard it everywhere: the best thing you can do for the health and wellness of your body is to stay hydrated. We’ve seen facts and statistics of varying degrees about what it means to be hydrated, how it benefits us, and how much we should drink in a day, etc. But is carrying around a whole gallon-sized jug of water every day necessary? How much water should we be consuming each day, and why? The tried and true (and proven again and again) go-to is that the body needs roughly 8-11 cups of water daily. Some people, depending on their activity level and the size of their body (height and or weight), need up to 16 cups. Typically men need more water than women per day on average, but a taller or more active woman may need more than 8 cups depending on her lifestyle. What are the benefits of water and staying hydrated? We’ve heard that water may help with weight loss—though this is not a guarantee, making sure your body stays clean and doesn’t feel the need to carry water to alleviate “water weight” can help regulate your weight. As well, being properly hydrated helps regulate your body temperature. But of course! We know from the way the ocean keeps coastal temperatures more moderate, our bodies work similarly. Especially during times when it is hot and humid, people require more water to regulate body temperature as well as replace what’s lost by sweating.

So long as your primary drink is water, don’t stress if you have the occasional other beverage. Even tea, sports drinks, coffee, and sparkling water can still provide hydration. As well, be wary of over-hydrating. Athletes run the risk of over-hydrating, which is what happens when your kidneys can’t process the amount of water you are trying to put through them. This is rare, but it’s easy to obsess over drinking water, yet it’s the easiest and most accessible thing that provides a healthy lifestyle! While most of your hydration intake should come from drinking water, remember, you also get daily hydration from foods. Especially if you’re eating a healthy diet of fruits and vegetables, you’re helping boost your body’s hydration levels. For an even more refreshing drink, consider adding fruit or even cucumber slices to a glass of water or two during the day—you’ll add some vitamins and antioxidants this way, too. So pour a glass of water, sit back, and enjoy the refreshment. Your body will thank you! n

A Fertility Journey Trusting and building a relationship with your body By Jessalyn Holsing

O

ne of the many joys of womanhood resides in the opportunity for motherhood. For many, motherhood is a life-long dream. Inevitably, there are a multitude of questions and some confusion when it comes to fertility and reproductive health. With the abundance of information available, it can be incredibly overwhelming when trying to figure out what is best for each individual. The fertility process can be stressful, so we have reached out to professionals in the field to shine some light on steps women can take to improve their fertility health and wellness should they decide to make this journey. First and foremost it is important to know your body and your needs. Erin Vande Lune from Flourish Wellness + Birth Co. advises “reach out to your primary physician to get a fertility exam and labs done to identify your personal needs when it comes to your body’s wellness, before taking any other steps.” Tests like nutrient testing, gastrointestinal, and hormone tests like the DUTCH test (a group of tests that evaluate your sex and adrenal hormones and metabolites) are a great help. It’s important to understand how your hormonal cycle works, the ways you can boost your fertility through it, and know your cycle inside and out. “Build trust and relationship with your body,” Erin says, “so that when the time comes that you are trying to conceive you have that foundation to work off of.” Unsurprisingly, general good health habits can boost your reproductive health. In addition to working with your women’s

health provider, it’s vital to reduce stress, regulate your sleep habits, and fill your body with nutrients. Doing mind-body practices (such as meditation, journaling, and yoga) can help reduce not only the stress on your mind but the stress on your body as well. A better-feeling body is synonymous with boosting your reproductive health. Getting an appropriate amount of sleep helps as well: less than 7 hours a night can negatively impact your reproduction health by interfering with your ovulation and egg quality. For nutrition, professionals recommend adequate proteins and fats as precursors to sex hormones; they may recommend Omegas, Myo-inositol, Vitamins E, C, Melatonin, Pycnogenol, and CoQ10 as supplements. Eating clean, greens, staying hydrated, supporting detox pathways, and avoiding inflammatory foods that could disrupt your endocrines will collectively give you the balance you need to boost your fertility. Erin Vande Lune speaks with enthusiasm stating, “Fertility can be a lonely journey and a very sensitive topic – but it can be fun. Know that you are not alone!” You can choose among many providers who are passionate and committed to walking alongside you, working with you to optimize the pieces of the puzzle and get you to optimal health. For women looking to support their reproductive health in order to prepare for conception – become empowered by learning how to optimize your health and well-being for the birthing journey you choose. n

Encouraging Teenagers Interested in a Healthcare Career Children enthusiastically proclaim what they want to be when they grow up: “A nurse! A fireman! A movie star!” Then they become teenagers and face the reality of choosing a career path. The South Dakota Future Health Professionals (HOSA) has been partnering with the South Dakota Foundation for Medical Care (SDFMC) to educate and encourage high school students interested in healthcare careers. In response to the great need for future health professionals, the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine and the South Dakota Area Health Education Center established a state HOSA chapter in 2012. The initial seven pilot schools and 260 students became 42 chapters, 1100 members, and 2600 alumni. Brock Rops, executive director for South Dakota HOSA, describes the organization as a gateway to becoming a health care professional. “I am able to encourage and nurture students who have an interest in pursuing a career in health care. These students have found a love for what they are doing as nurses, physicians, therapists, social workers, dentists, pharmacists as well as others. With the crisis in health care workforce, HOSA stresses the importance of these careers in South Dakota.” Students experience hands-on learning and gain confidence and understanding about healthcare professions through HOSA’s Competitive Events Program (CEP). SDFMC’s PFL team joins the effort by providing training and resources from Project Firstline (PFL), a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) national infection prevention and control training initiative. “The students we have worked with through HOSA are hungry for knowledge and eager to learn,” emphasized Jess Danko, MHSA, RRT, LTC-CIP, SDFMC’s PFL program director. “We engage youth in the excitement and impact of infection prevention and control and teach them basic practices they can use every day. We share valuable information to keep students healthy and support their career goals in one setting.” SD PFL has provided countless touch points at individual chapters and the HOSA state conference. One training included teaching students how to properly use personal protective equipment (PPE). The PFL team answers pressing questions and emphasizes the importance of infection prevention and control in healthcare and daily life. Danko recognizes the value of HOSA partnership with the PFL program. “Providing opportunities to understand infection prevention work for students in the HOSA program opens their minds to healthcare career options. They may work to offset healthcare associated infections (HAIs), provide infection control education, and identify the location of an infectious disease outbreak. Infection prevention careers save lives.” Students interested in joining HOSA can find more information on local chapters at https:// sdhosa.org/. Those who attend the 2024 HOSA Conference will join the PFL team to test PPE skills and speed in a relay and participate in the nationally recognized SD PFL Scavenger Hunt, which can be found at sdprojectfirstline.org.

Working mom Dana Jackson takes the vital signs of life after infant surgeries, careers, and raising a family. By Jill Funke Photos by Maggie Sweets Photography

H

aving it all is a goal of many people, especially women. Once one of those people, Sioux Falls resident Dana Jackson has realized how difficult that is to achieve. As a partner at the global public accounting firm RSM US LLP, this energetic wife and mother of Joey (almost 7), Tommy (5), and Nico (2) quickly realized that no one human being can perfectly balance the requirements of a demanding career with the needs of a family, community obligations, and necessity of self-care. Dana states, “For both parents to work, each family needs to find the formula that works for them.” That is precisely what she and her husband Pat did to ensure that he could continue to own and manage his 114 yearold family business Haegle’s Western Wear & Tack, while she worked as a CPA. When Dana encounters other working parents with young children like herself, she is quick to reassure them by saying, “Don’t let the influence of others around you dictate how you raise your family. Your situation may look different than theirs, which is perfectly OK!”

February/March 2024

LAUNCHING A CAREER Dana attended the University of Iowa to complete her undergraduate degree. She followed that up with a Master of Accountancy from the University of South Dakota and a Master of Taxation through a cohort program at DePaul Driehaus College of Business in Chicago. An internship at the Sioux Falls location of RSM, the fifth-largest public accounting firm in the United States, led to a permanent position as a CPA, which she has held for almost twenty years. Honored to be named a partner in her firm four years ago, Dana says, “Becoming a partner was a proud accomplishment because it happened despite my need to meet the challenges and requirements of starting and raising a young family.” Dana quickly points out that one of the main reasons she has succeeded professionally is the flexibility RSM offers her to work from home, schedule work around family needs, and flex her time around travel and other obligations. Dana says, “The flexibility provided through RSM benefits me as a mother of three young boys.” As a tax partner, Dana finds fulfillment by optimizing her clients’ receipt of tax credits and incentives that reduce tax liability and increase cash flow. The passion she feels for the services she provides to her clients is vital for her role as the National Leader of RSM’s Federal Credits and Incentives practice. Dana’s leadership position at her firm also requires her involvement in public speaking at internal and external panels, conferences, and other events. FAMILIAL CHALLENGES BEGIN In 2006, Dana and Pat were excited to be starting a family. Yet that excitement was dampened at twenty weeks into the pregnancy when a routine ultrasound revealed that the baby had pulmonary valve stenosis. After hearing how serious the diagnosis of this congenital heart defect was, Dana and Pat were referred to Avera Health’s pediatric cardiologist Sami Awadallah, MD. He helped them understand that a valve in the baby’s heart was almost fused shut, and that created additional issues as the other parts of the organ were required to function that much more to compensate for the defect. Dana comments, “Knowing about the heart defect for the second half of my pregnancy was both a blessing and a curse.” The expectant mom found comfort while researching the condition and connecting with others who shared similar experiences. Yet, the knowledge of the struggles her baby and family were sure to face prevented her from freely enjoying the happy expectation that accompanies a typical pregnancy. After the diagnosis, Dana underwent weekly echocardiograms and ultrasounds throughout the remainder of her pregnancy.

In anticipation of what Dr. Sami and the medical team foresaw would need to happen when the baby was born, it was recommended that the birth be in Omaha, close to Omaha Children’s Hospital. When Dana reached 39 weeks, delivery was induced at Bergan Mercy Hospital. And then - minutes-old baby Joey was immediately transported to Omaha Children’s Hospital. A mere twelve hours after giving birth, Dana left her hospital bed to hold Joey just before he would undergo his first heart surgery. Looking back, Dana says that although the experience was harrowing, she didn’t fully realize the gravity of the situation, as she comments, “This was my first child, and I didn’t know what to expect.” At the same time, she knows now what a great experience it was as the medical teams came together wonderfully. Not long after they realized the first surgery had not been entirely successful, one-month-old Joey had a second procedure that also failed to correct the issue. Because his heart still wasn’t functioning properly at three months old, Joey had open heart surgery, which was so concerning that Dana said, “You know it’s serious when they bring you to your own private waiting room.” Luckily, this surgery was successful, and Joey was on his way to being a healthy four-month-old when Dana became pregnant with the family’s second son, Tommy. The pregnancy and delivery went fine, but at four weeks old, the parents were stunned to learn that sutures in Tommy’s skull had fused together early and he would also need surgery. This time, the family was only required to endure one surgery and returned home with a healthy sixmonth-old boy. The family welcomed their third boy three years later when Nico was born healthy and complication-free. 62

February/March 2024

Over the years, Joey’s condition has been monitored closely by Dr. Sami and his team at Avera Health, and the healthiness of his heart has pushed his appointments with the pediatric cardiologist to every two years. Today, Dana and Pat are grateful that managing medications, frequent procedures, and visits to medical facilities have been replaced by the everyday challenges that most young families face. Especially around heart month, Dana considers how far their family has come, saying, “As parents, this journey moved us from despair to utter joy. Now it is almost easy to forget Joey’s heart condition when you see him with his brothers or playing basketball, soccer, and flag football.” Although they are unsure when it will be necessary, Dana knows that he will need valve replacement surgery in the future. Facing early challenges before settling into the many roles of her life, Dana says that her most blessed experiences are spending precious time with her family. They enjoy their stays at their house on Lake Okoboji, where they boat, fish, and partake in all the activities the lake has to offer. She says, “I grew up spending my summers in Okoboji, so it is amazing to share that with my own family.” Dana fills any leftover time cheering on her Hawkeyes, golfing, reading, and participating in hot yoga. Watching her boys grow a little more every day, she reminds other moms to give themselves a little grace along the way, saying, “Don’t be too hard on yourself. Resist the urge to compare yourself to others as you find the path that keeps you and your family healthy and happy.” n

T

he Jorgen Yde (JY6) Foundation’s Nurses Dinner returns for the 13th time on Saturday, March 23 at the Downtown Hilton Garden Inn. The event celebrates oncology nurses and their efforts while raising funds and awareness for pediatric cancer and leukemia research. Avera RN Mary FitzGibbon and Sanford RN Sarah Antonson will be honored this year. Mary and Sarah say it takes a specialized passion to be a nurse, especially, in oncology. Mary has been in nursing for 21 years and cares for cancer patients at Avera Cancer Institute. Mary shares, “I started working with hospice and cancer patients in 2014 and never looked back. I love my job - God definitely placed me in this position.” In her job, Mary says she not only cares for cancer patients, she is also there for the families. “You need to care for the ‘whole’ to help just one.” “A patient is not ever alone and ‘family’ consists of all different members. You need to treat the ‘whole’ emotionally, mentally and physically. I read, write, paint, crochet, and, most importantly, pray, a lot. For me, being a nurse is not just a job but a calling from God.”

64

February/March 2024

Sarah Antonson has been a nurse for 28 years and an RN in Pediatric/ Hematology Oncology at Sanford Children’s Specialty Clinic since 2004. “Working with children has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember,” she said. “Once I started my nursing career in Pediatrics, I knew that was my true calling.” Sarah admits working in pediatric oncology comes with a mix of feelings and challenges. “I have learned that I have to be okay with knowing that we have done everything we can do for each and every patient, regardless of the outcome.” “Connecting with children and their families is one of the best parts of this job,” she says. “While the children are going through their cancer journey, I get to spend a lot of time with them and their families. I have met so many wonderful people through this job and am forever grateful for that.” “Focusing on the positives of life is important,” she says. “There are always going to be good days and bad days; this job has truly made me realize that you cannot take anything for granted in your life.” The Jorgen Yde (JY6) Foundation is a non-profit organization, formed by the Yde family in 2011 after their 16-year-old son Jorgen died from acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The family created the foundation as Jorgen’s final wish to pay forward the kindness and expert care he received from the nurses who were by his side as he battled cancer. The Jorgen Yde (JY6) Foundation’s Nurses Dinner celebrates these extraordinary nurses and is open to everyone. For questions, call (605) 274-3388 or email events@jy6foundation.org. n
