Sioux Falls Summer

Mystery Date Night

A guide to planning a mystery date exploring Sioux Falls and the surrounding area

After you have been with your partner for several years, you may start to feel the love and romance begin to fade. A relationship can become stagnant when the involved parties stop keeping the romance alive. Planning a mystery date might be just what you need to maintain the fun and excitement in your relationship. Sioux Falls is abundant in fun events and outdoor activities to make your summer mystery date-night one that your spouse will never forget!

If you need a little inspiration, scroll through social media and you will find different iterations of the idea where one couple blindly picks between two cards that have different activities on them. Spice things up and consider activities and locations that neither of you has attempted before. If you want to play on the safe side, choose activities and locals that you both love. As you begin to make your list of potential mystery dates, you will want to decide between a day date or an evening date.

Let’s begin with some daytime date options. Sioux Falls has multiple beautiful parks and recreation areas that offer fun activities.

sfw | LIFE

KAYAKING: Try kayaking down Split Rock Creek with a route that runs through northeastern Minnehaha County.

WILD WATER WEST: Another fun water activity would be spending the day at Wild Water West Waterpark to enjoy the swim-up bar and lazy river.

DISC GOLF OR TRADITIONAL GOLF: You could also try disc golf at Spencer, Tomar, or Tuthill Parks in Sioux Falls. Many local retailers sell affordable discs. If you are up for more of a challenge, try traditional golfing as one of your activities. There are several great 9 and 18-hole golf courses in and around the area.

SCULTPURE WALK OR WINE TASTING:

A couple of relaxing options might be to take a stroll down Phillips Avenue and take in the Sculpture Walk that ends at Falls Park, or spend the afternoon wine tasting at a local vineyard.

MOONLIGHT MOVIE OR CONCERT

AT THE LEVITT: If an evening date is more suitable for your relationship, give your spouse the option of watching a moonlight movie at Fawick Park on the 2nd Thursday of each month or catching a concert at the Levitt on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday evening starting in June.

FIRST FRIDAY: Or, take in First Friday Downtown Sioux Falls. On the First Friday of each month local shops, bars, restaurants, and galleries run specials, and events creating an entertaining datenight downtown.

PATIO DINNER AT YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANT: You don’t have to be downtown to enjoy a patio, good food, and entertainment. Sioux Falls has numerous great restaurants that have large outdoor patios for you to enjoy on your mystery date!

We would love to see how you enjoyed a Sioux Falls Summer Mystery Date! Take pictures of the summer mystery date you surprised your spouse with and tag us on Facebook and Instagram with #SiouxFallsWomanCouplesConnection. n

BROOKINGS SummerRoadTrip!

The 52nd Annual Brookings Summer Arts Festival is scheduled to take place on July 8th and 9th at Pioneer Park on West Highway 14 in Brookings, South Dakota. Over 175 regional and national juried artists will showcase their original work in 15 art categories. Visitors can meet artists that design, create, and represent their work during the festival. The art on display ranges from traditional paintings, pottery, and jewelry to functional woodwork and mixed media pieces, providing something for everyone. Shari Avery, a member of the Board of Directors, often describes the festival as an “outdoor extravaganza of art, food, and entertainment.”

The Media Award winner at the 2022 Festival was Doug Hicks from Gem Lake, MN. His business, Faces in Wood, is a reflection of his unique creations. Doug has been a loyal attendee of the Brookings Summer

Arts Festival for over three decades, using Western Cottonwood bark to carve faces and figures. However, with a new supply of basswood, he ventured into creating colorful gnomes that caught the attention of the BSAF Awards Committee. In fact, Doug’s carvings became the inspiration for the 2023 Brookings Summer Arts Festival logo. When asked about his work, Doug stated, “As an artist, I’m always seeking to create something new for art patrons, and I enjoy the challenge.”

To fully enjoy the Brookings Summer Arts Festival, we recommend wearing comfortable shoes, bringing sunscreen, and bringing a hearty appetite! With 38 juried food booths available, there are plenty of options to satisfy your cravings. The festival also features continuous entertainment on three stages, in addition to talented artists and delicious food. Shuttle buses are available on both days, providing

convenient transportation from the South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum parking lot. The cost is just $2 one way, and the buses drop off guests on the park’s east side. For more information, please visit www. bsaf.com

Make the most of your visit to Brookings and the Brookings Summer Arts Festival by planning a full day of exploration in the area. Consider visiting some notable Brookings destinations, such as the South Dakota Art Museum, McCrory Gardens, and the Children’s Museum of South Dakota.

The South Dakota Art Museum found at 1036 Medary Avenue, is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm. It showcases the diverse legacy of South Dakota and offers exhibits, events,

and a store. To learn more, visit their website at sdstate.edu/south-dakota-artmuseum

McCrory Gardens, a botanical garden and arboretum on the eastern edge of the SDSU campus features a living museum of plants and offers education, conservation, and display programs. Open daily from 10 am-6 pm, the last admission at 5:30 pm. Check their website, sdstate.edu/mccrory-gardens for rates, events, facility rental, and schedule updates.

The Children’s Museum of South Dakota provides interactive exhibits and programming for children of all ages and abilities. The first floor resembles a street with a cafe, grocery store, post office, auto shop, and more. Open Tuesday 10 am-7 pm, WednesdaySaturday 10 am-5 pm, and Sunday noon-5 pm. prairieplay.org.

These attractions offer unique experiences and perspectives that complement the festival’s celebration of art and creativity. n

A Summer Staycation! Staycation!

AMidwest small-town presents much more than meets the eye. Sioux Falls and surrounding cities offer several options for fun on a budget. So grab the kids (yes, this includes your fur babies) and your favorite cup of Joe in preparation for a low-stress family staycation!

Start your trip in Centerville, South Dakota. Home of the delicious “Zebra Donut,” stopping at the Royal Bake Shop is a must! After everyone’s bellies are full, head down the street to their retro bowling alley, Mushy’s. With the majority of the interior remaining untouched from when it was originally built, the neon colors and old-fashioned lanes create an incredible atmosphere! You may need to brush up on your score-keeping skills, as this alley requires you to keep score! With tired arms from a funfilled morning of bowling, drive south to Vermillion to visit the National Music Museum on the University of South Dakota’s college campus. With over 15,000 instruments,

this museum is a hidden gem of culture and history. To end the day, spend the night eating smores in one of Yankton’s several state recreation camping areas.

After spending the morning enjoying swimming in the Missouri River, take a road trip to Le Mars, Iowa. Known as the original home of Blue Bunny ice cream, the Blue Bunny Ice Cream Parlor should make a spot on your list. The gift shop is also worth a look for people of any age. For a relaxing, entertaining evening, the Browns Theater hosts live music dinner shows! If you’re looking for an adorable place to stay, the Inn on Central is a boutiquestyle hotel just across the street from the theater.

The only thing I love more than a Midwest summer day is a day full of fun, FREE activities! Start the morning at one of over 80 Sioux Falls city parks. Located right off Interstate-229, Spencer Park is easily accessible from any part of town. Additionally, Spencer Park has a variety of activities for all types of families. If you have younger

sfw | LIFE

children, they will have a blast on the blacktop playground. Older children can take a shot at the 9-hole frisbee golf course. Dog owners or not, the Spencer Dog Park must be a stop on your list. There is something therapeutic about watching the carefree pups play! To complete the morning, enjoy a picnic under the covered shelter. In the afternoon, take a brief trip up Cliff Avenue to McKennan Park and catch a break from the heat in the free wading pool. If your kiddos are a bit older, McKennan Park accommodates all. Utilize the other McKennan Park amenities by turning the afternoon into a tennis or horseshoe tournament! The final destination to top off your incredible summer staycation is just a few minutes north of McKennan Park at Fawick Park in Downtown Sioux Falls. Each Saturday throughout the summer, DTSF hosts outdoor Moonlight Movies. Snacks are available for purchase, but admission is FREE – just like the theme of this staycation. n

There are a number of reasons why people may avoid going to the dentist, but according to several studies and surveys, the most common reason is fear and anxiety about dental procedures. It is important for dental providers to understand the reasons why their patients may avoid dental care so that they can address these concerns and provide a more comfortable and positive experience for their patients. Here at Karmazin Dental we often recommend Oral Conscious Sedation (ocs) to our patients to help make their dental appointment as easy as possible.

Here are some of the benefits of OCS:

• REDUCES ANXIETY & FEAR: Many patients experience anxiety and fear when visiting the dentist. OCS helps to reduce these feelings and allows patients to feel more relaxed and comfortable during their dental procedures.

• MAKES LONGER PROCEDURES MORE MANAGEABLE: For longer procedures, OCS can help patients stay calm and comfortable, making it easier for dentists to perform the necessary work.

• MINIMIZES DISCOMFORT: OCS can help to minimize discomfort during dental procedures, making it easier for patients to tolerate treatments that may otherwise be painful.

• ALLOWS PATIENTS TO REMAIN CONSCIOUS: Unlike general anesthesia, which puts patients to sleep, OCS allows patients to remain conscious and able to respond to instructions from the dentist.

ADVERTORIAL
DR MOLLY KARMAZIN & DR COREY KARMAZIN

SHORT RECOVERY TIME: OCS typically has a shorter recovery time than other forms of sedation, allowing patients to return to their normal activities more quickly.

• SAFE & EFFECTIVE: OCS is a safe and effective form of sedation dentistry when administered by a qualified dental professional.

Let Pork be Your Passport

It is important to note that oral conscious sedation is not appropriate for all patients. Patients with certain medical conditions, such as respiratory or cardiovascular problems, may not be good candidates for oral sedation. It is important to evaluate each patient individually to determine if oral conscious sedation is a safe and appropriate option for them.

If you’re interested in learning more about oral conscious sedation or have any questions about your dental care, don’t hesitate to contact us. We’re here to help you feel comfortable and confident during your dental appointments!

MEN’S HEALTH MONTH

All too often the adverse effects seen with aging of men are blamed on declining testosterone levels. Men perceive that if they supplement their declining testosterone level, they will once again have the vitality of youth. However, the question that needs to be addressed before testosterone replacement starts is, “Why are testosterone levels declining?” Age alone does not decline testosterone levels. However, a more sedentary lifestyle, a less-than-healthy diet, and an increase in weight gain have much more to do with the decline of testosterone levels. This also increases the risk of diseases, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, Alzheimer’s disease, and erectile dysfunction (ED).

The supplements we have chosen this month to discount are Pycnogenol™ which contains 40 different plant compounds called OPCs (oligomeric proanthocyanidin complexes) that carry strong antioxidant qualities of potential benefit to human health and physical performance. The second item is Prostate Health Support with Saw palmetto and Nettle. In men, conditions such as BPH (benign prostatic hypertrophy) are likely with age. The changes that may occur are increased frequency of urination, disruption of normal flow, and painful urination. The synergistic combination of nutrients and herbs in this product helps support the normal, healthy structure and function of the prostate gland.

Uncovering the Truth for

Flawless Skin

sfw | STYLE

If you’re anything like me, you would love to be able to walk out the door every day with beautiful, perfect skin that outshines the typical daily look. As make-up trends gravitate towards minimal, simplistic, “natural” looks, it’s getting more difficult to achieve when our skin is not cooperating. The first step to this beauty trend is taking good care of your skin based on individual needs. However, skin-care and makeup artists everywhere have a solution that will help you achieve this flawless skin with a simple answer: A FACIAL.

Short-term, a facial will make your face glow for a brief period. The real benefit of getting a facial is to get your skin assessed by an expert to guide you to the appropriate products that your skin needs - far better than listening to an influencer who says they have the same skin as you. The best part? You will indulge in a deep exfoliation, facial massage, and deep pore cleanse, all of which play a role in achieving flawless skin.

Different types of facials are available to meet your skin goals. A classic facial uses a basic technique that combines cleansing, exfoliation, extractions, and hydration to boost your complexion. Anti-aging is also an option that brightens the skin and gives you a youthful glow. Acupuncture facials treat wrinkles and improve elasticity. If you have super dry skin, a hydrating facial that maximizes moisture levels to achieve a soft and dewy feel is your answer. Finally, microdermabrasion facials are specific to exfoliating deep into your skin to give a flawless look.

Talk to your local facialist expert to design the perfect regiment your skin needs, and enjoy the pampering along the way!. n

Beachinware!

As Midwestern women, we love a good summer day with our toes in the sand because we know how valuable and rare those days are! Now picture this, a perfect day at the beach AND the perfect outfit. This article will sum up, in my opinion, the best beach ware that a girl could own for this upcoming summer.

Trends are moving toward bold one-pieces, prints, and soft neutral colors. Experts predict that solid-colored swimsuits will have more textures or fabrics. If you’re trying to stick with the trends, that is the best option for your shopping cart. But, hey! It’s never wrong to pick a swimsuit that makes you feel your absolute best in any style. Every swimsuit is beach ready!

My absolute favorite thing to wear to the beach is my favorite swimsuit paired with a neutral-colored, transparent coverup. Cover-ups elevate your beach attire by adding another dimension to your outfit. The best part is you will still see your favorite swimsuit! Mesh, crochet, or lace fabrics that are neutral in color are versatile to use for every color and style of swimsuit that you own, making the cover-up an essential part of any beach outfit.

Sunglasses are another beachin’ way to take your beach outfit to the next level. I suggest having a gold and silver metal pair of polarized sunglasses to compliment any outfit you put together. Finally, a comfy pair of neutral sandals, an oversized bag, and a floppy straw hat on hand is the ultimate way to complete your look.

I hope you will have the best time at the beach, as I KNOW you will have the best beachin’ outfit this summer! n

Preparing for a Recession

Are we in a recession? Economists have varying opinions, partly because there isn’t an official definition.

Many analysts use the common standard of two consecutive quarters of negative economic growth. But the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), a private research organization which maintains a chronology of the beginning and ending dates of U.S. recessions, defines recession broadly, as “a significant decline in economic activity that spreads across the country and lasts more than a few months.”

NBER records show ten official recessions in the US since the Great Depression in 1933. The last, in 2007 after the housing bubble burst, caused unemployment to reach as high as 9.5% according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

For you and your family, the definition of what’s happening isn’t as important as how you navigate it. Here are five essential tips to help you plan for uncertain times.

Stock your emergency fund. Slowing economy or not, an emergency fund to cover expenses for three to six months will help you manage an emergency or unexpected job loss. Figure out what

you spend each month and get your budget in order.

Re-evaluate your expenditures. Review every monthly expense such as insurance, utilities and cell phone bills and challenge yourself to find savings in each category. Remember even small expenses like monthly subscriptions can impact your emergency fund.

Prioritize paying down debt. Some experts suggest paying down high-interest debt first. Others promote the snowball method of tackling the smallest balance first, then adding that payment to what you normally pay toward the next smallest balance and work your way up to the loan or credit card with the biggest balance. If you are not sure where to start, talk to your financial professional about what might work best for you.

Focus on your long-term plan. Heading into a recession can be a good time to buy stocks because prices can be lower. Tempting if you have savings to invest. But be sure your decisions are based on your overall financial plan. This is where working with an educated, experienced wealth advisor can help you coordinate all the pieces.

Refresh your resume. If you’re still working, refresh your resume and have it professionally edited. Layoffs have impacted thousands of workers since late last year and experts say no sector is safe.

THE IMPORTANCE OF TIRE MAINTENANCE

The experts at Schulte Automotive share advice on tire maintenance and replacement.

Tire maintenance is an essential aspect of car ownership that will keep you safe on the road and save money on car-related expenses. When it comes to car safety, seat belts, airbags, and vehicle lights are usually the first things that come to mind. Tires, on the other hand, are one of your car’s most important safety elements, which is why the skilled technicians at Schulte Automotive stress the importance of proper tire maintenance.

The first step in tire maintenance is to regularly check your tire pressure. Underinflated and overinflated tires can lead to increased fuel consumption and reduce the life of your tires. On the other hand, overinflated tires can be dangerous as they can cause blowouts and uneven wear.

Another aspect of tire maintenance is tire rotation. If you don’t rotate your tires regularly, your tires will wear out faster causing problems like poor handling. When you rotate tires regularly it minimizes the stress on your engine resulting in better performance and saving money on fuel.

You should also inspect your tires regularly for signs of wear or damage. Look for any cuts, punctures, or bulges on the sidewall of your tires, as these can be indications of serious damage. Additionally, check the tread depth of your tires. The

minimum safe tread depth is 2/32 of an inch. If your tires are less than this, you should replace them.

If you are not sure if your tires require maintenance or replacement, take your vehicle to the experts at Schulte Automotive for a tire check. If the tire check results in your vehicle needing new tires, Schulte Automotive has a large selection of tires for all makes and models. You don’t have to own a Subaru to go to Schulte Automotive. In fact, they are ranked 29th out of 635 Subaru dealerships in the nation for tire sales by volume. You can trust the experts at Schulte Automotive to quote you fair pricing to replace your tires. They will provide you with good, better, best pricing along with the education to help you select tires that fit your budget and your needs. They even offer financing options. Every tire purchase comes with free tire rotations and alignment checks for the life of the tires along with free roadside assistance for two years. If you are like many South Dakotans that change your tires from winter tires to summer tires, Schulte Automotive will store your winter tires until it is time to change them again relieving you of the hassle of storing and transporting your tires when they need to be changed for the seasons.

Being a full-service dealership, Schulte Automotive has an advantage over other tire shops when it comes to servicing your vehicle. They provide mechanical, collision, and windshield replacement services in addition to customization

ADVERTORIAL

options including window tinting, upholstery repair/replacement, and auto restoration. With all the services your vehicle could require in one location, Schulte Automotive makes servicing your car hassle-free.

The fact that they have a full-service repair shop is not the only benefit of using Schulte Automotive. They provide a complimentary concierge service. While your car is getting fixed, you may select from one of their 100 loaner cars. They will pick up and deliver your car for free from your home or place of business, and they will deliver it back to you after the job is finished.

If you choose to wait for your vehicle repair you can relax in Schulte Automotive’s comfortable customer lounge with free Wi-fi, an internet bar with a charging station, large screen TVs, massage chairs, video games, snacks, and selfservice beverages. They recently added an 11,000-square-foot community dog park that is open to the public.

Another compelling incentive to pick Schulte Subaru above their competitors is their love promise. You can be confident that when you bring your vehicle to Schulte Automotive, you will receive an exceptional customer service experience with every interaction.

Schulte Automotive is not only the best place to get your vehicle repaired, but it is also an excellent place to work with competitive pay. They are now looking for mechanical and collision repair specialists. For additional information, go to www.subarufosiouxfalls.com.

Top Cooking Trends for 2023 5

If you love exploring ingredients and new ways to cook old favorites, 2023’s cooking trends will delight and inspire you. Top chefs are sharing these trends for kitchens everywhere, along with helpful tools to help make your culinary adventures more successful.

1. DISCOVER PLANT-BASED KINDS OF PASTA

While traditional pasta will never go out of style, plant-based alternatives will be making waves in 2023. Traditional pasta is made from wheat flour (AP flour, semolina or whole wheat), but the world of pasta created from plants is colorful, flavorful, and nutritious — and great choices for those with wheat allergies or gluten sensitivity. These include pasta made from edamame (soybeans), black beans, chickpeas, or chia. Thanks to the popularity of Korean and Japanese cuisines, other options you could try are kelp noodles, shirataki noodles (created from the konjac yam), and cellophane noodles (made from mung beans, potato or sweet potato starch or tapioca). You can also

substitute pasta with zoodles (spiralized zucchini) or spaghetti squash, which naturally shreds after cooking into spaghetti-like fibers that are fun to eat.

Whatever pasta dishes you concoct, you’ll need a great cookware set that can handle anything you throw at it. The perfect 12-piece set will include, 7” and 9.5” fry pans, 1.25- quart and 2-quart covered saucepans, a 4-quart covered Dutch oven, a slotted spoon, spoon, slotted turner, and pasta fork. Look for nonstick cookware, making for healthy, easy cooking and cleaning, and tempered glass lids allowing you to monitor food as it cooks.

2. BE UP-TO-DATE WITH DATES

Have you noticed dates showing up everywhere? This stone fruit from the date palm trees can enhance many dishes and cuisines, with a natural sweetness that’s irresistible in savory or sweet applications. Dates add a burst of flavor to everything from stews and stuffing to salads and more. For dessert, bake them in date nut bars or cakes, or enjoy them on their own.

38 SiouxFallsWoman.net | June/July 2023
sfw | FOODIE

Whether you’re baking treats or concocting savory delights, a great mixing bowl set is vital to be able to mix, measure, and prep ingredients. A good option is a plastic mixing bowl set containing 1.5-quart, 3-quart, and 5-quart bowls with non-slip bottoms for stability.

3. RE-VAMPED NOSTALGIA

While everyone loves their childhood favorites, today’s trend takes them to the next level, adjusting ingredients and/or cooking methods to add a wellness twist. Lovers of everything from pizza bites to mac and cheese will still get those cozy vibes and flavors while appreciating the healthier spin on these classics. Grilling or steaming are just a few techniques that can make your faves better for you by cooking lighter.

Love pizza? You can get pizza parlor perfection at home using the right pizza pan. To create that ideal crispy crust, choose one with perforated construction which allows direct contact between the oven heat and the pizza crust. Select a pizza pan that also has convenient cutting guides to ensure perfect slices.

4. ENJOY THE SAVORY WITH THE SWEET

Combining sweet with savory flavors is another trend gaining steam. For example, if you love baking but tire of eating sweet-on-sweet, add savory seasonings into your recipes, as toppers or in the frosting. Chocolate combined with chipotle or jalapenos can really wake up the taste buds, or try cayenne, chili, Chinese five spice, curry or cumin in your dessert. Too much heat? Simply increase the amount of cinnamon, mace or ginger — or sprinkle a little flake salt or freshly ground pepper — and taste the results. They may surprise you!

Whether baking cookies or roasting veggies, a quality baking sheet is mandatory. Choose a sheet that distributes heat evenly for thorough baking. Look for scratch-resistant, dishwasher-safe nonstick coated sheets which make clean-up quick and easy. This multi-use pan can be used for everything from heating appetizers to baking cookies.

5. BUTTER UP GUESTS WITH BUTTER BOARDS

Similar to charcuterie boards, spread a board with various kinds of butters, hummus and/or other spreads, adding a variety of herbs and seasonings, exotic flake salt, or ground pepper that guests can enjoy on crusty bread or crackers. Better yet, create individual butter boards using marble coasters so guests can stand and chat while sampling tasty bites.

Sound intriguing? These growing trends and helpful tips should inspire you to create wonderful new flavors in the year to come. n

Al Fresco

Dining Dining

Spring has sprung, and summer is right around the corner! With no better way than spending time outside after a long, cold winter, now is the time to update and refresh your outdoor dining area so you can tuck into al fresco-style dining all summer long. Al fresco dining is just a fancy saying for eating outside. Take advantage of the many ways to add charm and functionality in creating a beautiful outdoor eating space.

First and foremost, make sure your patio is in tip-top shape. Winter can be hard on outdoor spaces like wood decks, patio pavers, and cement slabs. Patio furniture and outdoor rugs may need replacing every couple of years as the harsh elements of sun and rain can fade these items quickly. If you don’t already have a covered deck, consider adding shade to stay cool while dining in the open air. Some options to create shade and privacy are building a pergola, setting up an awning using outdoor fabric, or even popping open an outdoor umbrella. When you can stay cool and out of the sun, you can utilize the space any

time of the day. Making your space functional will mean spending more time enjoying food and drink with your friends and family al fresco style.

If you want to maximize your time outdoors, a full outdoor kitchen with a built-in barbecue, pizza oven, beverage fridge, and sink is the way to go. Be sure to use materials designed to withstand the outdoor elements. If built-ins are not a practical option for your space or budget, adding a grill or portable pizza oven can be an alternative investment for your outdoor dining space without breaking the bank. Having built-in cooking accessories outdoors eases the burden of going in and out of the house.

Al fresco dining is a time to create memories, and you may not want to stop the party once the sun goes down, making exterior lighting very important. Be sure to use lights rated for humid and damp conditions. Illuminating your outdoor space is a necessity to create a warm ambiance. Great outdoor lighting options include hanging an outdoor chandelier over the table, running bistro

40 SiouxFallsWoman.net | June/July 2023
sfw | FOODIE

lights over the entire outdoor patio, or lighting up the outer perimeter of your outdoor kitchen. If you have a covered patio, a ceiling fan will help to cool and, more importantly, keep pesky bugs away. A less expensive option to keep bugs away is to have mesh food covers on hand. Chances are you will love dining al fresco so much that you will want to find ways to extend the season as far into fall as possible. Utilizing outdoor portable heaters or fire pits are excellent means to enjoy meals outside through fall.

While dining al fresco is limited to a few months of the year, I believe that when dining-alfresco we all agree that our focus should be on creating memories. Once you create your space to enjoy outdoor dining, setting it up each spring is exciting with the knowledge that you will enjoy the warm weather with loved ones again. Now is the time to start daydreaming about how you will spend your summer evenings! n

MODERN

Teamwork makes the dream work! A Sioux Falls native, Miranda Nolte, inspired by her love of the mountains, had dreams of building a mountain modern home. This homeowner is quick to give her builder, Chad McCoy of McCoy Construction, and his team credit for building her dream home. Along with McCoy Construction, she says she curated the perfect team of local small businesses to help achieve her vision.

Miranda explained, “I visited several homes on the Sioux Empire Parade of Homes for a couple of years and wrote down the names of builders that I liked. From there, I contacted and interviewed a handful of builders and had several meetings before ultimately choosing McCoy Construction. There’s something about Chad McCoy’s character and personality that reminds me of my brother, that felt comfortable. I knew what I wanted, and Chad was excited and eager to build the house design that I envisioned, he let me take the reins.”

From the moment you open the front door into this stunning home, it is clear that Miranda made the right choice in trusting McCoy Construction to make her vision a reality. Miranda said, “I knew how I wanted my floor plan to flow, Chad sketched it on paper while I explained the layout room by room. The two main features that were a must for me - sprawling ceiling heights and as much natural light as possible.” Miranda achieved her goal because all of the windows she added amplified the natural light, showcasing the glistening pond in her backyard.

There are one-of-a-kind features everywhere you look that make this home truly unique. The kitchen range hood adorned with the hide of an Axis deer is a prime example of Miranda’s noteworthy style. Miranda had never seen this done but once she dreamt it up in her mind, she said she just had to have it. She proposed the idea to her cabinet designer, Shelly with Sioux Falls Kitchen & Bath, and together they made it happen. The end result is showstopping and makes for a kitchen style that is second to none. Miranda has a knack for creating special moments in spaces. The purpose of the Axis hide in the kitchen was to tie in the carpet on the staircase landing that has an Axis deer print design. The round black iron hand-railing made by Jesse with JG Metal is wrapped in a cognac leather strap that is typically used for bicycle handles. Miranda and her parents spent two afternoons meticulously wrapping the entire top rail. The leather wrap will patina over time and that look is what Miranda is eager to create. JG Metals also fabricated the suspended iron shelving that Miranda designed for her wine and whisky bar as well as a wall hook for hanging throw blankets. Miranda says she loves to mix and match prints and textures. She incorporates several different textures throughout and they all add warmth to her home.

Another team player that Miranda talks highly of is Justin with Banking Barns from Hills, MN, whom she met at the Sioux Empire Home Show. She hired Justin to make her 9ft long black walnut live edge dining table that features black epoxy down the center. She fell in love with the beauty of black walnut, so she asked Justin to make her floating shelves, stunning black walnut cabinets on each side of the fireplace, a mudroom bench, and butcher block countertops in the pantry and laundry room. His wood creations helped her achieve that warm cabin feel while keeping the modern touch.

The half bath is sophisticated with 3D geometric black wall tiles, three offset black granite vanity shelves, a black vessel sink, and a black toilet. The black and white wall design in the Jack-and-Jill kid’s bathroom was hand-painted by Jillian with Jillian Artistry. The hand-painted walls tie in beautifully with the ‘Good Vibes’ art deco tile inlay in front of the vanity.

Not one detail has been overlooked in this home, even several of the ceilings and walls have special treatments. The great room boasts 22 ft ceilings with expansive wood beams, the center beam measuring 28 ft long. Miranda pulled JG Metals in again to add black iron details to the beams. The primary bedroom has black textured wallpaper and a suspended cloud ceiling finished with black car siding and up-lighting.

The dining room and boy’s bedroom have 3D wood-looking wallpapered ceilings. Bold and eye-catching wallpaper treatments are in almost every room of this home. They add additional depth and personality to spaces. The modern pink and gold marble mural in her daughter’s room is fit for a princess of any age. Jillian with Jillian Artistry was able to showcase her talents in Miranda’s garage where she handpainted a large rustic American Flag and an edgy version of Mount Rushmore.

When asked if she hired an interior designer, Miranda shared, “I did not. My personality in general is very detail oriented in just about everything I do and I love designing. My grandma was a seamstress specializing in custom drapery, she worked a lot with high-end homes and had a store on Phillips Avenue called Rita’s Décor for most of my childhood. My aunt, Mary Ellen Taylor, is an outstanding interior designer and lighting specialist here in Sioux Falls. Mary Ellen took the lighting in every room of my home to the next level; she is very knowledgeable and an excellent resource. She introduced me to the Buster and Punch light switches which turned out to be one of the most talked about design features in my home, who knew! She and I like to say, it’s ALL about the details!” n

Upgrades that Add Value to Your Home Exterior

From the front stoop to the backyard, outdoor remodeling projects can add tremendous value by boosting curb appeal and function — factors that have a big impact on how much money prospective home buyers are willing to pay for a home. To pique the interest of potential buyers before they even walk through the front door, here are five eye-catching exterior upgrades sure to pay off in the long run.

1. UPGRADE YOUR DECK

Recently, outdoor living has propelled to the top of homeowner and homebuyer wish lists. Installing a new deck can add $12,000-$15,000 to a home’s resale value equating to an ROI of 62- 65%, depending on whether the deck is built with wood or composite material.

A composite deck offers long-lasting beauty and low-maintenance benefits that appeal to today’s time-stretched consumers. Unlike wood, high-performance composite decking requires minimal upkeep as it is engineered to resist fading, scratching, and mold, and won’t rot, warp, crack, or splinter. With no sanding, staining, or painting required, composite decks attract homeowners looking to spend more time enjoying their outdoor spaces rather than maintaining them.

2. REPLACE RAILINGS

One of the most visible aspects of a deck, the railing is often the first thing prospective buyers notice and has the power to set the tone for an entire outdoor space. If the existing railing is beginning to show signs of wear, replacing it with something new and modern can give a deck an instant facelift that will boost curb appeal and perceived

value. For a custom look, consider infill options like contemporary rod, mesh, or glass inserts that optimize sightlines and deliver a modern flair.

3. CREATE AN OUTDOOR ROOM

Another value-add upgrade to any deck or yard is a pergola. This relatively easy addition creates the look and feel of an outdoor room with structural prominence that adds architectural appeal. Today’s pergolas offer customizable shade options to provide shelter from the sun and elements, extending the livability of an exterior entertaining space by offering cool relief on hot days.

4. ENHANCE PRIVACY

The past few years have left us craving safety and serenity. Thus, privacy is more important than ever. To enhance the sense of seclusion in an outdoor space, incorporate decorative privacy screens. Made of sturdy, lowmaintenance materials, panels are offered in both permanent and moveable options. They are available in multiple patterns and colors to complement the aesthetic of any outdoor setting, and are ideal for enhancing privacy around decks, patios, and pools.

5. HIGHLIGHT THE HOME WITH OUTDOOR LIGHTING

Landscape, string, railing, and deck lighting are simple and cost-effective upgrades that can highlight the eye-catching features of a home’s exterior after the sun goes down. Outdoor lighting can also add value as a wayfinding tool to enhance the safety of an outdoor space and extend the amount of time homeowners can spend enjoying the outdoors after dark. For easy, DIY-friendly assembly, look for plug-and-play components that are durable and waterproof. n

MOTORIZED WINDOW COVERINGS FROM BUDGET BLINDS ELEVATE YOUR STYLE WHILE PROTECTING YOUR HOME AND FAMILY.

In an era of smart homes, technology has done wonderful things to help not only simplify everyday life but has also allowed us to live better as well as more safely. So when it comes to upgrading your current window coverings to motorized window coverings, the advantages are absolutely worth considering.

At Budget Blinds in Sioux Falls, the trend for motorized window coverings is substantially gaining in popularity, not only for new construction but also for homeowners who are looking to update their current window coverings. The reasons for the growing demand are simple: they elevate style, are a breeze to use, increase safety for small children and pets because there are no cords to become entangled in, and they protect your home and belongings from damaging UV rays.

According to Kyle Wiese, Manager of Budget Blinds in Sioux Falls, “Not only do new window coverings deliver a stunning visual impact, but there is also an environmental factor to consider. If you choose the correct window coverings, they will protect your other investments. Specifically, when it comes to motorized options, you reduce cold and heat that comes in from intense west sun which can really damage your floors and furniture.”

Motorized window coverings can be directly wired into new construction or installed with a battery pack in existing homes which allows you to operate them with a voice-activated smart home hub, an

app, or a handheld remote. Kyle notes, “We like to work directly with contractors so that we can create a plan for electricians to follow so that everything works seamlessly. However, window coverings can operate equally as well with a battery pack.”

Budget Blinds provides complimentary in-home consultations within a 50-mile radius of Sioux Falls where they will measure precisely and provide professional design advice for you. In addition, clients are encouraged to visit their gorgeous showroom to envision and operate the custom window products they are considering. On top of excellent design and installation services, Budget Blinds also offers an incredible five-year no-questions-asked warranty on their products. Kyle shares, “No matter the reason from dogs or kids breaking blinds to paint splatters from when you repaint we will replace your window coverings within five years of purchase. It’s an incredible warranty, and our clients absolutely love this service.”

Always Getting the Little Things Right

Committed to collaboration, success, and authenticity, Ashton Hess has found her true passion as a Treasury Management Portfolio Manager at First International Bank & Trust (FIBT). Originally from Huron, SD, Ashton has always loved to learn, travel and meet new people which helps her to excel at building exceptional relationships. As a Treasury Management Portfolio Manager, she works to identify and onboard new business clients offering online business products to safeguard and manage their funds. In addition, she partners with business bankers to provide a well-rounded relationship that meets her client’s needs and expectations. Ashton shares, “I take the team approach and work hard to provide help in all areas, just like our Sioux Falls team does. I am not just going to help with an online product to help your business be more efficient, but I will assist in other areas. We involve our entire business banking team right from the start.”

Ashton lives in Sioux Falls with her husband and two children and has enjoyed fully immersing herself and her family into the community that she now calls home. Fortunately, her position at FIBT has allowed her to become involved in the same way professionally. “My role allows me to be involved with so many amazing organizations and events. It feels great to be able to spend time with great employees as well as business owners and staff. One of my favorite things is to meet businesses to get to know their industry on more of an in-depth level. This way I can help them with their current needs and advise them in the future as our technology and products evolve.”

FIBT’s ‘Live First’ culture is extraordinarily important to Ashton as a manager but also as an employee on a personal level. “Many times, we are spending more time with the people we work with than our families at home, so why not make it personal? We need to work hard, but we also need to enjoy it here and the people we work with. It is easy to do this when we know each other well and spend time out at non-work events also.”

Children’s Health

What are ear tubes - why do some kids need ear tubes?

By age five, most young children will have had an ear infection. Ear infections can be the source of frustration for children, babies, and parents alike. They can be painful, persistent, cause high fevers, and sleepless nights making them a common reason for families to visit a care provider.

Most ear infections will resolve without surgical intervention with a dose of antibiotics. But in some children, ear infections may become chronic. If your child gets an infection every other month, ear tubes may be the answer. We caught up with Dr. Thomas Tamura, an ENT physician at Midwest ENT & Allergy, to get the scoop on why some kids need ear tubes and what ear tubes do.

According to Dr. Tamura, there are two primary reasons that children need ear tubes. “One reason is recurrent middle ear infections; the other is a problem with persistent fluid in the ear, which is usually discovered because a child is experiencing hearing loss.”

Children become candidates for ear tubes when they have had three to four infections in a 6-month period of time, or the ear fluid does not resolve over a 3-month period.

“The bottom line is that; there is fluid trapped behind the eardrum,” Dr. Tamura explained.

“Typically, the Eustachian tubes in the ears work by allowing air in and fluid to drain out. If the Eustachian tube doesn’t open, the fluid can’t get out, which causes an infection or hearing loss, or sometimes both.

“By placing a hole in the eardrum with a small stent, air pressure is allowed to not only come in but

58 SiouxFallsWoman.net | June/July 2023 sfw | HEALTH

provides ventilation and allows the fluid to drain out,” Dr. Tamura said.

Ear tubes are tiny cylinders that allow air to move into the middle ear. The tubes are implanted during a short surgical procedure. The procedure itself takes about 5 to 10 minutes.

Following the procedure, children are usually back to normal the next day. The tubes stay in place for about six months to a year and generally fall out on their own. Most children outgrow the problem as they get older.

According to the most recent data, there are commonly two times that children need ear tubes: between the ages of 15 months and three years (usually because of recurrent ear infections) or between the ages of four and six (typically to treat hearing loss due to fluid build-up).

Ear tube surgery is the most common childhood surgery performed with anesthesia. The American Academy of Otolaryngology reports more than 500,000 children’s ear tube surgeries are performed yearly.

If your child struggles with recurrent ear infections, hearing loss, or ear pain this summer, you may need an ENT checkup. You can schedule a consultation any time with one of the ENT experts at Midwest ENT & Allergy. No referral is required. n

Be Aware of Basal Cell Skin Cancer Signs

There are clear-cut indicators that mean basalcell carcinoma is affecting you. This common skin cancer shows up in certain ways, and anyone can get it treated in a timely fashion if they know what to look for.

“Basal-cell skin cancers are the most common skin cancer, and while they are rarely fatal, they are often disfiguring,” said Jenny Nelson, MD, Avera Medical Group dermatological surgeon. “When they develop and are not treated, it can lead to the removal of a nose, an ear, or the development of a large ulcer on the skin.”

LOOK FOR LINGERING PIMPLES

Skin inflammations, especially those that will not heal for weeks or months, or ones that seem to return again and again, could indicate basal cell skin cancer.

“If you have a tender sore that always bleeds or a bright pink patch of skin, you should have it examined,” Nelson said.

She said something that almost looks like a rash should also be checked out; this condition can appear as a shiny spot on your skin or a color change that never seems to go away.

TENDER OR SORE SPOTS CAN BE SIGNS

Basal cell skin cancers can appear as mild injuries, such as a small cut or a bug bite that itches.

“They can be a problem if they never seem to heal. They were likely a basal cell development that was then injured,” Nelson said. The lack of healing is a telling sign the skin lesion is something more serious, she added.

PEARLY BUMPS ARE ANOTHER INDICATOR OF TROUBLE

Some basal-cell skin cancers will not bleed but instead form a crusty surface. In other cases, they will develop into a clear, almost pearl-colored bump that sometimes has red streaks.

“Those streaks are blood vessels, and usually are tell-tale signs of a basal cell condition,” said Nelson.

TREATMENT AND RECOVERY FROM SKIN CANCER

Nelson said that when caught early, this troublesome skin cancer can be treated. But timing is vital.

“If they are left untreated, they can lead to significant damage in the area where they develop – in some cases leading to surgical removal of surrounding skin or tissue,” she said.

Surgical treatment, such as Mohs surgery, can help people avoid disfiguring procedures.

Act if you notice any of the signs of basal-cell skin cancer; you can do so by scheduling a skin check with a dermatologist at Avera.org/ Dermatology. n

Protecting Our Loved Ones and Their Caregivers

MANY SOUTH DAKOTANS LIVE IN A LONG-TERM CARE FACILITY

and trust the healthcare workers to become their primary caregivers. The South Dakota Project Firstline (SD PFL) team recognizes the value of that relationship and joins in the effort to ensure residents are safe and protected by providing infection prevention education. As infection control practices evolve, ongoing and updated training is essential to prevent spread and reduce harm.

Dow Rummel Village recognizes the value of infection control education and is taking a proactive approach to offer training to those working within their facilities. By partnering with SD PFL, the healthcare team will have the advantage of first-hand training and resources specialized for their departments and settings.

“We are excited to join Dow Rummel Village in their infection control training education platform,” Jess Danko, RRT, LTC-CIC, SD PFL lead shared. “Having a new face share infection control at a facility continues to be a successful education method.”

Protecting all from infection control risks is a daily and ongoing task for every healthcare worker.

“At times we get so caught up in the complexity of care, we forget the basics of infection control and how much just those steps help prevent the spread of disease,” stated Marie Opheim, infection control preventionist at Dow Rummel Village. “I am hoping to utilize the online courses as well as in-person training with the PFL team to give our staff a different voice to listen to.”

The South Dakota Project Firstline team offers many training opportunities, onsite or virtually. Training videos and resources are available on the website www.sdprojectfirstline.org, and health care facilities interested in learning more about infection control training options can contact the SD PFL team.

We are here, there, everywhere.

MORE THAN JUST STRAIGHT TEETH

The Many Benefits of Orthodontics

If you ask someone what orthodontic treatment is, most will reply, “Braces to straighten teeth.”

The word orthodontics comes from the Greek language. Ortho means straight, and dontia means teeth! Although straightening the teeth is what most people desire, they may not realize many additional benefits to orthodontics. Orthodontic treatment will help improve your bite, reduce the risk of tooth fracture due to bite trauma, and avoid gum problems and the premature wear on enamel. Straight teeth also allow for better speech and chewing ability. When teeth are in proper alignment, it is easier to keep them clean since the toothbrush and floss have better access to clean the surface of plaque, bacteria, and

food debris. As a secondary benefit, people with straight teeth tend to be more committed and motivated in keeping them clean and healthy!

When children are young and don’t yet have all of their adult teeth, orthodontic treatment is typically geared towards addressing specific problems to help avoid later complications. Treatment can be as simple as a space maintainer to hold space for permanent teeth that have yet to come in. Also, when the teeth erupt and are crisscrossed or biting improperly, it’s necessary to move them early to avoid enamel damage or gum problems. Jaw issues often can be better addressed with an orthodontic appliance during growth stages, having an orthopedic benefit making future treatment more effective.

ADVERTORIAL

In teens and adults, we can treat the teeth more “comprehensively” since all the permanent teeth have erupted in the mouth. Modern orthodontic techniques can involve braces or clear aligners like Invisalign. What is best for you? That depends! Some bite issues are more effectually treated with traditional braces versus aligners, but often both are practical options. Aligners work great for many people, but you should consult your dentist or orthodontist to see which would be best for you. Aligners are heavily dependent on compliance. If you wear them, they are effective, but if you have them in your pocket more often than in your mouth, they will not be effective. I always tell my patients that it is a commitment. If you are willing to wear them properly, they may be the right choice! If you think you may lose motivation or want the process out of your control, traditional braces may be a better option. The same applies to teens! Some are great rule followers and will fully comply during treatment, while others may have trouble being 100% dedicated to the process leading to longer treatment times or a compromised outcome.

If you think you or your child could benefit from orthodontic treatment, make it a point to ask your dentist! There has been a lot of marketing recently with self-managed clear aligners available online without the supervision of a dentist. Always be aware that orthodontic treatment is safe and effective when done correctly, but problems and complications can occur! The goal is to make the teeth straighter and the mouth healthier for a lifetime. Unsupervised treatment may not be as effective and has the opportunity to cause unintended consequences that can damage tooth roots, and gums, and cause bone loss. When professionally managed, orthodontic treatment can give you the healthy, beautiful smile you deserve!

Staci Staci

MARTINEZ

Fate favors the fearless

Staci Martinez has blazed an unconventional path as a female welder in an industry comprised mostly of men. Recently achieving a personal goal of adding a piece to the Sioux Falls Sculpture Walk, this driven lady hits life head-on as she throws herself into raising a family, working as a health coach, and pulling out all the stops to lift her businesses to success.

Staci was born and raised in Sioux Falls. As a young adult, she resided in Phoenix, AZ, and returned to Sioux Falls shortly after starting a family with her husband, Joe. About nine years ago, when this enterprising woman was working at Twin City Fan, she was responsible for inventory, shipping, receiving, and even learned to use the forklift to transport items to the welders. At one point, the company experienced a shortage of welders, and Staci’s boss asked her if she wanted to learn how to weld. Her initial reaction was to decline the offer. Yet she is not one to let a lack of experience or background keep her from trying, and when she found the courage to try welding, she got hooked. “I fell in love. I was addicted.”

June/July 2023 | SiouxFallsWoman.net 65

WELDING AT HOME

When Joe launched their flooring business, Phoenician Wood Floors, Staci quit her job to work with him. Three years ago, she returned to welding when her husband bought her a welder and grinder. Fortunately, Staci already had most of the tools needed. She has been accumulating clamps and other items along the way, including a CNC plasma cutter machine that offers more possibilities for fabrication art and more extensive projects and sculptures. During this time, Staci also used her creativity in wood burning and restoring furniture. Along the way, Staci launched her welding company, 605 Shield Maiden, and under that business, she completes odd and custom projects that come her way. Allowing the business to grow gradually kept her from borrowing funds upfront, as she says, “Starting slow, I avoided spending money for tools and equipment that I hadn’t earned from projects.”

In addition to working as a fitness coach, caring for her three children, and creating everything from handrails to sculptures in her home garage welding shop, Staci also helps her husband with flooring installations whenever he needs an extra set of hands. On the administrative side of the businesses, Staci is responsible for many efforts, including social media. Understanding that opportunity is often disguised as hard work, Staci gladly rolls up her sleeves to tackle whatever each day might bring. She has also learned to embrace the unknown and utters a motto “Fate favors the fearless.” Staci continues, “If I am scared to do something, that’s what I know I need to do.” Yet in the middle of coaching clients, helping Joe with projects, and taking care of her family, she longs for the occasions when she is in her garage shop, using her imagination to dream up new creations as she says, “Welding allows me to bring out the creativity in me.” Losing herself in her art, Staci can block out everything else in her life at the time. “When I put my hood down and have my headphones on, there is no one in the world but me at that time.”

66 SiouxFallsWoman.net | June/July 2023

ADDRESSING OBSTACLES

A woman in a male-dominated field like welding can experience various challenges. The scrap metal and wood used for many projects can be heavy. Luckily, Staci’s fitness coaching helps keep her in prime shape and able to lift most of the materials for projects. The satisfaction she feels from creating new works from materials left over from other projects is an added benefit of her craft. Even though women make up a tiny percentage of welders, this number is growing. Staci feels blessed to have a network of other female welders that reach out to each other and offer support, technique suggestions, and solutions to problems. Collectively, they realize what they are up against, yet they unite under a simple philosophy; as Staci says, “There are challenges we face being in a man’s world, but we just let the work do the talking.”

Called to respond to the needs of others whenever possible, Staci is incredibly passionate about giving of herself. She was humbled when asked to donate an art piece to the Compass Center Gala that raises funds used for services provided to sexual and domestic violence survivors. When presented with opportunities to speak about or demonstrate welding for students and particularly young ladies, Staci gladly lends her time and encouragement. She has even judged welding competitions, created the welder’s choice award for a local high school competition, and is part of the Hooded Heroes Foundation, which helps struggling welding students purchase the personal protective equipment and other items required in that line of work. Realizing the impact a solid start can have on the career trajectory in welding, particularly for young ladies, Staci advises young adults, “This is your road to independence.”

On the artistic side of her business, Staci has participated in conventions and networked with other like-minded welders. These experiences have helped her find belonging within the welding art community; she says, “I finally feel like I fit, and I never really felt I fit with other groups.” Staci also auditioned three times for the Tough as Nails TV series and created the emblem for the grill of the truck presented to the winner of season one. Staci’s most noticeably prominent work is the metal gnome displayed on the Sioux Falls sculpture walk. Being on the walk was one of Staci’s goals on her vision board, alongside other goals and dreams, including travel. As she checks items off the board one at a time, she looks back on a life of bravely confronting new experiences that propel confidence to face whatever the future will bring. n

Enhancing Natural Beauty: The Art of Permanent Makeup

One local artist’s passion for enhancing natural beauty

Changing careers can be a daunting prospect for many people, but for Marcy McQuitty, it was the best decision she ever made. After experiencing allergies in her previous business of floor covering and design, she knew it was time for a change. Her friend Sue suggested that she would be good at permanent makeup, and the idea of helping women feel more confident and beautiful resonated with her. Despite having never heard of permanent makeup before, Marcy’s artistic ability, medical background, and training made her an excellent fit for the industry.

Marcy made the brave decision to leave her career and enroll in a permanent makeup training program, spending months learning the art of microblading, tattoo eyeliner, and lip blush. She honed her skills until she was confident

enough to start her own business, Marcy’s Permanent Makeup. Starting a business from scratch is never easy, and Marcy had to work hard to build a client base and establish herself in the industry. However, her hard work paid off, and soon she was booked out for weeks in advance with locations in Sioux Falls, Platte, and Rapid City.

“Being able to help women feel more confident and beautiful is such a rewarding experience,” says Marcy. Her services include microblading and tattooing for eyebrows, eyeliner, lips, and nipple/areola. Microblading is a semipermanent makeup technique that utilizes a handheld tool to create hair-like strokes in the eyebrow area. The result is perfectly shaped and defined eyebrows that can last up to two years. Tattoo eyeliner is a similar semi-permanent makeup technique that involves depositing pigment into

the upper or lower eyelid area, eliminating the need for daily application of traditional eyeliner.

Permanent makeup for brows and eyeliner has become a popular solution for enhancing and defining natural features in the beauty industry. These semi-permanent makeup techniques offer long-lasting results that can eliminate the need for daily application of traditional makeup. Whether you’re looking to create perfectly shaped eyebrows or define your eyes with a precise line, microblading and tattoo eyeliner offer safe and effective solutions that are suitable for a wide range of people.

“I feel incredibly blessed to be able to do what I love every day,” says Marcy. “I’m so grateful that I took that leap of faith and pursued my passion.” Marcy’s Permanent Makeup offers safe, effective, and longlasting solutions for enhancing natural beauty. Backed by 20 years of experience, Marcy’s story is proof that it’s never too late to follow your passion, and with hard work and determination, you can achieve anything you set your mind to. If you are looking to enhance your natural features, Marcy’s Permanent Makeup can help you feel more confident and beautiful every day. n

What's New: Getting to the Root of the Problem

Radiant Health and Hormone Therapy offer a new option for women seeking answers to chronic conditions

“We are a comprehensive women’s clinic that specializes in unique issues women face throughout their lives from the teen years through menopause. Our specialties include hormone balancing, GI issues, adrenal and thyroid issues, food sensitivities, and preventative health. At Radiant, we believe health is beautiful,” said owner Jessica Morrell.

The clinic opened virtually in December and will have its Grand Opening in June. It will be located at 4928 E. Rosa Parks Place and has two providers on staff. Amy Thompson will work alongside Morrell. Both women are nurse practitioners with a combined 15+ years of experience.

Radiant develops personalized, patient-focused care plans in an intimate setting.

“We know that healthcare has become difficult to navigate and can often leave people feeling unheard and with more questions than answers,” Morrell said. “Our mission is to provide customized treatment plans to help patients feel their best, so they can live their lives to the fullest.”

Radiant’s philosophy involves using a functional medicine approach to get to the root cause of a woman’s problem, focusing on lifestyle influences,

sfw | PROFILES

genetics, and the environment to determine what is causing her chronic condition.

“It’s all about really listening to patients to find out what is going on in their bodies and their world, then taking the time to understand their health concerns. It begins with a thorough history,” said Thompson.

Each patient receives a comprehensive assessment of their situation followed by in-depth testing and a customized solution.

“Our testing is quite varied because there is so much interplay between the GI, the adrenals, and thyroid and their effects on hormones.”

When it comes to treatment plans, Radiant presents multiple options that can include supplement recommendations as well as dietary and lifestyle recommendations. The clinic also offers hormone evaluations, wellness visits, thyroid management, advanced functional testing, acupuncture, and IV therapy.

Experience is an important consideration when looking for a provider of women’s health services. For the last 15 years, Morrell has been a women’s health nurse practitioner. She started her career in the Air Force and has been in Sioux Falls since 2011.

Thompson spent most of her career in women’s health and urgent care before completing her training in medical acupuncture and functional medicine.

“Radiant’s goal is to help women take control of their health and feel their best. We are a place where women are heard and have input into their treatment and how they move toward their health goals. Most importantly, we will work with you on the path to health and wellness every step of the way.”
