Sun isLife

By Chellee Unruh

The blustery South Dakota winter has set in with considerably less sun, which means the majority of the population will become vitamin D deficient. Vitamin D also known as the sunshine vitamin, is manufactured in our skin following sunlight exposure. According to GrassrootsHealth, studies have found that people with low vitamin D experience reduced athletic performance and are at a higher risk of many serious diseases: namely, cardiovascular disease, cancers like breast and colorectal, autoimmune diseases including diabetes and multiple sclerosis, and even infections, flu, colds and much more.

What is ironic about winter is that when people need vitamin D the most, the majority are not getting enough. The question remains: Why is it that we can so easily become Vitamin D deficient in the winter months? The answer is: Because we are confined inside. Between work, the bitter cold, and indoor-focused activities, we get less and less sunlight. “Our bodies have evolved to use the sun to get vitamin D,” shares Carole Baggerly, founder of GrassrootsHealth. “We are just now learning the long-term effects of being Vitamin D deprived.”

The best way to combat a vitamin D deficiency is by educating yourself, testing serum levels, adjusting behaviors such as sun exposure, and finding a good supplement source. “The standard vitamin D serum level that you need to measure, is between 40 and 60 nanograms/milliliter (ng/ml),” says Carole. From an ‘intake’ standpoint, GrassrootsHealth, the world’s leading Nutrient Research Institute, has demonstrated that with their 18,000 study participants it takes about 5000 IU/day of vitamin D3 for a 150 lb person to achieve that level.

Making sure you have adequate vitamin D intake is something you can do to help boost your immunity and protect your health. n

AT LAST! THE PERFECT PRESENT FOR THE PERSON WHO HAS EVERYTHING

Share the Ultimate Gift of Health, Wellness, and Relaxation with 3 Degrees Infrared Sauna Studio

We all have them, the people who are incredibly diffi cult to shop for because they seem to have it all. It can make fi nding a meaningful gift for them not only frustrating but nearly impossible.

This year, make your shopping a breeze with a gift card from 3 Degrees Infrared Sauna Studio. Not only is it unique, but also something that anyone can benefi t from.

Set up to accommodate both individuals and couples, guests can take advantage of a whole-body vibration machine that helps to tighten, tone, and boost lymphatic drainage as well as enjoy cold eucalyptusinfused towels. Unlike traditional steam saunas, infrared saunas provide a dry heat that doesn’t feel as hot and doesn’t cause diffi culty breathing. Perhaps the largest difference is that infrared light actually penetrates human tissue up to two inches and offers therapeutic benefi ts because of its ability to be absorbed by your body. It safely raises core body temperatures by 3 degrees during each 40-minute session! This results in a healthy, deep, and detoxifying sweat similar to a fat-torching workout.

A perfect bonus? It’s an amazing escape from South Dakota’s frigid winter temperatures and anyone who suffers from S.A.D. (Seasonal Affective Disorder)! Each session is 40 minutes of sheer relaxation and a perfect way to unwind after a stressful day. According to 3 Degrees member Margaret, “My husband and I were gifted a couple’s session, and while I expected to enjoy it, I didn’t expect it to be such an incredible experience. It’s so different from steam saunas that I’ve experienced before. I would never have been able to sit in that for 40 minutes but our session was relaxing, private and so comfortable. After our session, we slept better than we have in a long time.”

Beyond relaxation and rejuvenation benefi ts, the reasons to try this out for yourself or gift one of your besties are too good to pass up!
