From The Board of Directors Our MISSION as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

A Gathering Place by Cathy Hartrich Have you visited The Café since our new Director of Food and Beverages took over on April 1? Perhaps you’ve come for breakfast on a Sunday morning, stayed for lunch after a round of golf or attended one of the very successful Happy Hours or Special Dinners. If so, you know that even during the hot summer months, with our seasonal residents far away, seating space has been at a premium. While The Café is making record revenues with new and innovative food and beverage offerings, we are actually unable to accommodate all who want to have a meal, attend a special event or just get a beverage and perhaps a snack after golf. This affects our residents and nonresident golfers alike. Now, with seasonal residents returning, it is necessary for our members to make advance reservations for Happy Hours and Special Dinners. Events are being wait-listed. Potential customers have left when seating has been unavailable. Clearly, demand and capacity have outgrown our present quarters. Your Board has determined that a potential solution is to relocate the Pro Shop so that a lounge can be created in that space. The lounge would serve alcohol, food and provide overflow seating during peak dining hours. The primary purpose of a lounge would be to create an amenity for residents: a place where more of us can gather to socialize and participate in special events. There is no doubt that a lounge would also be good business. Alcohol sales are far more profitable than food; Happy Hours to date have generated a net profit of more than 52%, growing in attendance even during the summer months. Nonresident golfers play an important part in lowering members’ dues; they would also contribute significantly to the success of an expanded Café/Lounge. Finally, a lounge that could be opened to join with the dining room would greatly improve catering opportunities for both small and larger parties. The need for action is immediate. To this end, your Board asked the LRPC (Long Range Planning Committee) to form an ad hoc task team to develop a proposal for relocating the Pro Shop. Capital Funds are available for such a purpose, and no member assessments would be required. The Pro Shop proposal is nearing completion and will be presented to residents on Saturday, November 8, 2 PM, Auditorium. Please plan to attend. The LRPC has promised to consider your questions and input before making a final proposal to the Board.

Association Budget We are only five months into the fiscal year and next year’s SCOV Budget is already in its first stages of development. In some sense, management is always working on the budget by identifying new and more efficient ways to generate revenue and offset expenses. With that stated, the first specific action toward development of the 20152016 Budget was taken recently by starting to organize an ad-hoc sub-committee of the golf advisory, marketing and finance/budget committees for the purpose of developing and recommending golf rates and plans for the Budget. This committee will meet as needed in November and/or December. The next step in the budgeting process will take place after six months of financial reports have been completed which will be in January. At that time, the controller will provide necessary financial information and forms to the department managers who will develop first draft budgets for their respective departments. Once the department managers complete their initial budgets, each budget will be reviewed with the controller and general manager. After review and adjustments to each budget have been completed, the controller will assemble the department budgets, fee schedules, historical data such as past dues and golf rates, the GM cover memo and other miscellaneous information into a packet which is issued to the finance and budget committee. The Finance and Budget Committee will review the Budget at two to four meetings, depending on issues that arise and make recommended changes to the Budget. After the committee has completed its review, the proposed Budget is issued to the Board for review at the April Study Session and approval at the April Board Meeting. Of course, Board Members are provided with copyes of the draft budgets and encouraged to attend the Finance and Budget Committee meetings so that each Board Member becomes very familiar with the Budget prior to the Board review and approval. This lengthy process assures that there is full transparency as all meetings are open to the membership and it best assures that the Budget will be the best and most cost effective budget projection for the benefit of the members.

Keeping up with the changes happening around us is always a challenge. To that end, changes to our Development Standards were recommended to the Board and approved in September. To ensure you have the most current copy, you can access the updates either via the Sun City Oro Valley website or hard copies are available at the Administration Office. The most significant changes made to our Standards focus on windows and roofs. As always please refer to this document before starting any work on the outside of your home. In addition, we are in the process of assembling a paint sub-committee that will be reviewing and updating the colors available for painting our homes. We are planning to present our recommendations to the Board for approval in early 2015.

Co-Chairs Julie Holtry 825-4473 Elaine Deeter 825-5388 Gift Shop 917-8051 Shop Hours: Monday-Friday, 9 AM-4PM, Saturday, 9 AM-12:30 PM www.orovalleygiftshop.com

The holidays are fast approaching, a perfect time to visit the Gift shop to find unique gifts. Featured November artists are Barbara Gioioso and Juliet Williams. Barbara trained at the Rhode Island School of Design in Interior Design. She has an interest in all forms of art and has been silversmithing since 2006. She works with semiprecious stones and lost wax casting, using Barbara Gioioso Juliet Williams lapidary and other techniques to make lovely earrings and necklaces. She also helps teach newcomers to the club. Juliet has been creating stained glass since 2000. Taking many hours to complete, the glass pieces have to fit a pattern exactly, then are foiled and soldered to hold the glass together. More recently she has been learning the art of fusing glass which she feels gives her more room for creativity. The Gift Shop welcomes new consignors and volunteers. Check in to see how you can join us. Government Affairs

Chair Debra Arrett 825-5703 debra@myfastmail.com Second Wednesday, 3:30 PM, WC1

With the 2014 election season behind us, your Government Affairs Committee has shifted from sponsoring political candidate forums back to hosting informative events. The first will be on Friday, November 7, 1 PM, Auditorium. EMS Battalion Chief Josh Hurguy from the GRFD (Golder Ranch Fire Department) will explain two new programs. With changes in health care plans, GRFD’s Mobile Health Service insures against any out-of-pocket expense for ambulance service for a reasonable annual fee. Their more recently added Community Integrated Healthcare Program supplements transitional care to reduce hospital re-admissions for patients with congestive heart failure, heart attack and pneumonia. Karn Boyce, Water Conservation Specialist for the Oro Valley Water Department will discuss strategies for conserving water and the water-use audit available to SCOV residents free of charge. Come to learn and stay for the cookies and coffee. Loan Room - Community Assistance

Aluminum Can Donations: deposit empty, rinsed aluminum cans in the box outside the Activity Center kitchen. For safety reasons, do not deposit unrinsed cans which can attract bees and may become a hazard. Please continue to save your aluminum cans because this supports our Loan Room, providing a way to purchase new equipment as needed. On October 22, we made the trip to the recycling center and delivered 620 pounds of aluminum cans, for which we received $365.80. Bringing our fiscal year total to $708 for 1,200 pounds of cans. The Loan Room is operated by the Community Assistance Committee and is a free service to SCOV residents. It is

funded by recycling of aluminum cans throughout our community and the annual Pancake Breakfast. The Loan Room provides medical equipment such as walkers, wheelchairs, toilet risers, shower seats, etc. We also loan rollaways, cots for children, tables and chairs, car seats and some children’s toys. We are open from 8-9 AM, Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the year. Reservations can be made at the Loan Room and, beginning in November, by telephone. Long Range Planning Committee/Ad Hoc LRPC Task Team

Chair Leslie Platt 818-1963 Vice Chair Debra Arrett 825-5703 Second and Fourth Monday, WC3, 2 PM

The LRPC is working on Board-assigned ad hoc tasks involving development of proposals relating to the Café, Pro Shop and Activities Center. The intent of the Café proposal is to provide space for a lounge that would provide a much-requested amenity for residents while making a significant positive contribution to Café revenues. To accomplish this, the Pro Shop would have to be relocated. Therefore, we first developed a proposal for the Pro Shop project. LRPC minutes describe our process in great detail. Find them on the SCOV website under Committees. Then, make suggestions or ask questions by sending an email to proshoptaskteam@suncityorovalley.com. We will present our proposal to residents on Saturday, November 8, 2 PM, Auditorium. A Happy Hour in the Café will follow, with architectural renderings available. After we have presented the proposal and considered residents’ feedback, we will present it to the Board. We invite your presence at our meetings and involvement in developing proposals. Marketing and Publicity

Chair Jim Mitchell jtmitch45@gmail.com Fourth Thursday, 3 PM, WC1

The SCOV marketing plan is on schedule and on budget. The Marketing Committee is working on recommendations from the Long Range Planning Committee that the Board has assigned to Marketing. Details are on our SCOV website. Because the fourth Thursday of November is Thanksgiving, we will meet on the third Thursday, November 20. Neighborhood Pride

Chair Tempe Johnson 825-6994 Third Tuesday, 2 PM, WC3 Thank You

Neighborhood Pride issues sincere thanks to all homeowners who: • keep trees trimmed so stop signs are visible • keep trees trimmed up high off sidewalks • keep plants trimmed back off sidewalks • keep their yards weed-free, neat and tidy • make sure all lights are burning in house number plates Not often enough do we say thank you to the people around us. Perhaps, as homeowners, we should say an occasional thank you to our neighbor who borders our personal property. If, when he has his own yard cleaned up by a landscaper, he includes part of yours which may have a problem caused by his foliage, it just might deserve a thank you. Thanksgiving is a good time to sincerely thank all homeowners who take pride in their own personal property and work diligently to keep our entire community a beautiful place in which to live.

The Season of Thankfulness

Typically, my articles are operational in nature. They share with you what is new, coming or happening in SCOV. This month this article is reflective in nature. My father was a university president and when he retired, I remember one of his speeches included a statement about how so many of the good things that were a part of his life (and mine) was because of that university. I’ve often thought of that statement in relation to my work at Sun City Oro Valley. So many of the good things in my life are because of this community. And there is so much to be thankful for in SCOV. We have a thoughtful, qualified, dedicated Board of Directors who attend at least 18 Board meetings a year, many over three hours long. They come prepared on the subject matters, listen to fellow residents and take action. There are 20+ committees at work on our behalf studying various issues, assisting the Board and providing expertise in a multitude of areas. Examples of this are the Long Range Planning Committee who is studying the Pro Shop/Lounge/Café and Activ-

ity Center/Auditorium issues or the Properties Committee who worked on the Auditorium’s audio visual system this past summer or the Marketing Committee’s work on promoting our community. The list is long of the time, effort and expertise provided by these committees. We benefit greatly from them. I’m still excited about the AFC and thankful for the opportunities provided by that facility for our residents. It makes us healthier, it makes us proud. Even the smaller projects like the Catalina restroom refresh or the exterior building light replacement adds to the things we can be thankful for in SCOV. But most importantly, it’s the people of SCOV that make this season of thankfulness special. I watch you work together, reach out to each other when encouragement or help is needed. You challenge each other to think and improve. You treat each other and staff with respect and kindness. So I reflect on this season of thankfulness with a full heart, grateful to be a part of SCOV. Take A Class or Start a New Hobby

The way we all communicate has changed. New residents moving in and other residents find little need for a land line phone when they have a cell phone. This means that their phones have a different long distance area code. I personally know of no one under 45 who has a land line, including my family. As more of you are purchasing cell phones, iPads, tablets etc., you may want to take a class from our computer club in the near future. Isn’t it great that this is available to you? Ever wanted to start a new hobby? Our Artisan Center offers an area of many things to choose from. Why not join a club; you may find out that you have a hidden talent. Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis

Do I need different types of exercise?

Different types of exercise benefit your health in different ways: Aerobic activities like running, biking and swimming strengthen your heart and increase your endurance. Strength training like weight lifting or resistance training builds muscle and bone mass, improves balance and prevents falls. It’s one of the best counters to frailty in old age. Flexibility exercises like stretching and yoga help prevent injury, enhance range of motion, reduce stiffness and limit aches and pains. At first, just focus on getting any kind of exercise, whatever it may be. As exercising becomes your habit, try adding variety. If you keep at it, the benefits of exercise will begin to pay off.

Now that overseeding is complete and the course has been marked, we are ready for another great season. Just a reminder, that the driving range is open to the public and range balls are now $5 for a small basket (approx. 25 balls) and $7 for a large basket (approx. 50 balls). The other option is to buy a range card. Please see the staff in the Pro Shop for more details. Lessons are available from Rick Sample or myself. We are both PGA members and our rates are $45 for ½ hour and $55 for 45 minutes. We also offer packages, so please call us for more information 825-3110. Please stop by the Pro Shop and check out the new merchandise that has arrived for the season. Residents will receive 15% off their purchase and pass holders will receive 30% off. This excludes sale items, clubs and balls. Walkers and course riders, please abide by the walking signs that are provided for you on the golf course. We want you to enjoy the beautiful scenery and at the same time be careful that you do not get hit by a golf ball. Pro Shop will close at 2 PM on Thanksgiving Day. Happy Turkey day to all. Superintendent - Michael Kropf Last year, the area surrounding the front nine greens was overseeded in an attempt to improve playing conditions. It was an experiment to determine if golfers liked the playing conditions the overseeded rye grass provided, as well as to determine if the extra water necessary for this grass would be detrimental to the sand traps and areas surrounding the greens. By January, the comments from golfers were overwhelmingly positive, so the decision was made that the experiment was a success and this year all the greens will have an overseeded apron. Last year, with the back nine aprons not overseeded, golfers were often sent off the back nine tees during frost delays. With no rye grass to freeze around the greens the frost delays were shorter because the maintenance staff could get on the green quicker to move the pins and mow the greens. This year the frost delays could be longer because it will take longer for the greens to thaw before workers or golfers can access them. Another issue with overseeding aprons around the greens is that the traps will be wetter than in previous years. Last year, extreme efforts were used to reduce the water going into the traps from irrigation, to the point that the grass was really stressed. During the summer months the transition back to Bermuda grass was disappointing in these apron areas. This resulted in poor playing conditions in the summer and required extensive repairs. This year the aprons will be hand-watered more often to decrease the stress on the grass. Golf Advisory

It’s still challenging to land a ball on the green and it drains the correct way now. Remember on league day to check in at least 30 to 45 minutes ahead of schedule. Loan Room Community Assistance and YOU by Paul Mercer We have a wonderful asset right here in SCOV dedicated to providing temporary help when unexpected medical needs arise, or even when unexpected house guests arrive. The SCOV Board of Directors started the Community Assistance Committee in 1990 as the need for certain items on a temporary basis became known. The Loan Room has medical equipment such as crutches, transport chairs, wheel chairs, plus household items and children’s items available for you when you need them and at no cost. Medical devices are the most popular items borrowed. There are also rollaway beds and folding tables and chairs, which can be handy for guests. For very young visitors, there are some toys available, along with car seats, high chairs and cots. There is a two-month limit on equipment loans, with extensions available if needed. Everything is clean, in excellent condition, and ready to go. Just call 917-8052 on Monday or Wednesday mornings to make reservations for items and then pick up the items on Tuesday or Thursday, 8-9 AM. Pick-ups without prior reservations can also be made on Tuesday or Thursday mornings. The CAC phones are answered by your SCOV neighbors who are volunteering to help you. The Loan Room, operated entirely by volunteers, is located in the rear of the golf cart barn with signs in place to help guide you. Gay Russell is current committee chair, with an eightmember board that manages the operations of this yearround amenity. To finance this operation, the committee raises money by sponsoring a pancake breakfast each year in January and also harvests aluminum cans that are collected in two large bins outside the kitchen of the Activity Center. All proceeds are used to refurbish or replace equipment. Find them in the Tipster listed under Association Committees, Loan Room - Community Assistance.

Folk Dance Club of SCOV

Harvey Gardner 308-5616 Savear@cs.com Friday, 10-11:30 AM, AFC/Studio 2

The Folk Dance Club of SCOV provides instructions for every dance at our sessions in the AFC/Studio 2. No prior experience or partners required. Experienced dancers, including those willing to teach, are welcome. A typical session offers 10-14 mostly easy-to-learn international folk dances, holding hands, in a circle, with a few requiring twirling. Please wear non-scuffing gym shoes. If you do a Google search with the words Folk Dance SCOV Youtube, you will find some videos of our Folk Dance Club in action. Most of the dancers you will see are new to folk dancing, so don’t let inexperience keep you from joining us. Rock ‘N Roll

Pres. Earl Cohen 818-2582 Dances in the Auditorium

Mark your calendars. Local merchants and SCOV artisans have donated items for our Member Appreciation/Fundraiser Sunday, February 15, 2015. The prize raffle, silent auction and cash raffle will benefit YOTO (Youth on Their Own), the Tucson organization which supports the high school graduation and continued success of abandoned and homeless local youth (homeless through no fault of their own), by providing financial assistance, basic human needs and guidance. At the last event we raised over $25,000 for YOTO with your help. Our goal is to beat that amount by February 15. More details to follow. What are you doing New Year’s Eve? Come celebrate with the Rock and Roll Club and dance to Heartbeat playing your favorite rock and roll tunes on December 31 in the Auditorium. Watch your emails for details. Line Dancing - Sunliners

Want Additional Landscaping Work Done Beyond Your Property?

SCOV has a program to handle plant encroachment on common areas behind many SCOV properties. This occurs on a schedule. However, if you would like landscaping to occur ahead of schedule or have additional work done on ASSOCIATION land, there is a process for doing that. It’s called the Pre-Qualified Landscaper Program. An application must be submitted and approved before any work can be done. Also, there may be some days that the courts will be closed, but we will try to post this information as soon as we know. Keep checking the bulletin board for updates. You may email Judy Cornelius with your thoughts or ideas on these matters or others that should be brought before the board. Pilates

Mary Ayers 638-7916 mary.pilates@gmx.com Monday, 3 PM, Thursday, 1:30 PM, AFC/Studio 2

It’s been one whole year since we welcomed our two terrific new instructors. They are still with us, and we’ve all been working closely to get the classes just right. We start with warm-up exercises, stretching and deep breathing. Both instructors are careful to modify the most strenuous exercises for those of us with limitations. It seems like we are always having people ask us “is Pilates good exercise for seniors?” Our answer is always “yes”, especially with group mat classes conducted by experienced instructors like ours. The benefits can’t be beat and include increased core strength (stronger abdomen and back muscles), better balance, more flexibility, more muscle tone, increased stamina and well being. Joe Pilates, the founder, practiced well into his eighties. Please join us or just come by and watch. Cost is $8/class with annual club dues $20 pp. Call Mary Ayers for more information. Pinochle

Barbara Matthies 825-4891 Wednesday, 6 PM, Desert Oasis/Ocotillo

We play single deck and rotate partners every four hands. Bring 50¢ for your tally. The first Wednesday is treat night. The third Wednesday is birthday night. If your skills are a little rusty we will get you up to speed quickly. Annual dues $6 pp. Poets Corner

Sharyn Rafieyan 825-6762 Monday, 9:30-11:30 AM, Welcome Center/WC1

British poet Kathryn Simmonds says of her recent switch in genres, “I’m attracted to the short story because, like a poem, it can’t tell you everything and doesn’t seek to. Like a poem, the short story taps you on the shoulder and then leaves.” While Simmonds has aptly captured their similarities, she deftly displays their differences in a poem that uses form as well as language. In the Woods is carefully constructed with short, simple phrases that repeat with slight changes: “The baby sleeps...The baby frets...The baby feeds...The child is grown...The child is gone.” Changing seasons are cryptically hinted at: “The leaves are lightly tinkered with.” With a mere five stanzas, three lines each, Simmonds captures the essence of a lifetime. As we critique our poems, we often consider form as well as content. We encourage experimentation and value others’ opinions. Even established poets enjoy the support of workshops as well as newcomers. Poker

Men’s Friday Poker George Rose 520-303-2019 tucsonroses@live.com Friday, 5:45-8:45 PM, Desert Oasis/ Saguaro

Playing poker with your neighbors can be most enjoyable. We play high only, five draw, five stud, seven stud, Omaha, Texas Hold’em and iron cross (criss cross). No dues. Bring your own refreshments. The dealer will ante for all players which gives him control of the game. The cards speak for themselves. Absolute requirements are to leave politics and religion at the front door, and come with the intention of having three hours of enjoyable, no-hassle, understandable poker.

With each annual return, the rackets seem to become smaller and the balls come off the walls faster but we love this game because it develops good eye/hand coordination and offers high quality exercise. We encourage new players and offer lessons for those interested in learning this sport. Early Music Recorder Ensemble

Thank you for helping us find our perfect Arizona home. From the very first time we communicated, we were impressed with your willingness to help when asked, offer suggestions & respect our changing priorities. Our original plans for a home in Tucson were for an established condo/ townhouse in the foothills. Our final destination was in the northwestern part of the area. From the very first meeting, you were able to understand our needs/dreams/realities & lead us to a full range of homes that met our criteria. After we made that critical decision, you led us through the offer & inspection phases, making the process easy & comfortable. We really feel that we got our money’s worth from the purchase. The inspectors were excellent & made us very secure in their recommendations. Your suggestion we ask for home warranty was spot on & saved us considerable money when the A/C unit needed attention. Kathe & I would be happy to offer our enthusiastic recommendation of your services to any folks looking for help with a home purchase.
