From The Board of Directors Our MISSION as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.
Motion Made Last November Affects BOD Summer Schedule
by Susan Jakosa Wherever you may be as you are reading the Tipster this month, I am hopeful that every one of you is enjoying all the Crazy, Hazy, Lazy Days of Summer! Many residents of SCOV spend a great part of the summer visiting family and friends, returning to a second home or just vacationing out of state or even out of the country. Prior to this July, members of the Board were not able to plan such a lengthy holiday since a Board meeting and Study session were scheduled for each month of the year. To encourage more residents to consider running for the Board of Directors, a motion was made and approved at the November 2013 meeting to not schedule Board meetings in July and August. However, if certain events occur and a meeting is deemed necessary during these months, a Special Meeting may be called and any Director not in residence at the time may attend via telephone conferencing. This, of course, would allow everyone attending the meeting to hear all participating parties via speakerphone. Having the summer off was not a critical issue in my decision to run for the Board, but I believe it gave each candidate a positive outlook knowing any future summer plans did not need to be altered. So, here I am Sittin’ On the Dock of the Bay, well, really on a lake, not only thankful the decision was made but looking forward to more residents wanting to now get involved with the Board. Please do think about it! In the meantime and even without July and August Board meetings, a number of projects have already been completed and many are still in progress this summer due to the diligence of our excellent Staff. One of those projects includes restrooms being refreshed in a number of facilities. Pickleball and Bocce ball courts also remain in the works. So enjoy the rest of the summer and try to attend a Board meeting this fall. I would certainly enjoy meeting you. Hopefully, I might then See You in September!

The Views Golf Club — Revenue and Reputation Although The Views Golf Club financial condition is far from ideal, it appears that we are beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel. As a result of a sound marketing program, excellent course conditions plus great customer service, golf play has increased at The Views. Revenue from public golf exceeded $300,000 this year for the first time. In addition, sales of annual passes increased after several years of decline. One obvious benefit of this increased golf revenue is that every dollar that is generated from golf is a dollar that does not have to be generated from the annual homeowner dues that you pay. So, whether you golf or not, all residents want this increase in golf revenue to become a trend rather than an aberration. Aside from the benefit from golf revenue as noted above, there is at least one other benefit to SCOV homeowners, which is enhancement of your property values. I will admit that I do not have tangible data that proves this point; however, logical thinking and general real estate principles seem to support my position. It stands to reason that if the SCOV amenities such as the Fitness Center, Pickleball Courts, etc. are in demand by residents and potential residents, that demand will help increase demand for housing in the community. This concept also applies to The Views Golf Club. The more The Views reputation improves and golf play increases, the greater the demand for the golf course. Logically thinking, this demand for a major SCOV amenity will ultimately translate to increased demand for homes in SCOV by golfers and nongolfers which generally results in escalated housing prices. Please keep in mind that the best advertising is word of mouth. So, whether you’re a golfer or you’re a resident that’s never picked up a golf club, take any opportunity that you may have to encourage friends, relatives, business associates and others to partake in golf at your golf course. It’s for your benefit.

Rolling on the River... and everywhere else Proud Vistoso Cyclists keep on rolling Story and photo by Jim Mitchell Ask Jim Johnson, president of Vistoso Cyclists, SCOV’s biking club, about his favorite ride and he’ll quickly tell you it’s from Sun City out to Sabino Canyon, returning along the Rillito River path on the way home. It’s around a 50-mile jaunt. Johnson started riding just five years ago, a couple of years after he and his wife, Bonnie, moved to SCOV from the Portland, OR area. “I was looking for an activity,” Johnson explains, “and with around 350 days of sun and the great infrastructure around Oro Valley, biking was a natural.” Oro Valley offers more than 110 miles of paved trails, shoulders and paths. The club leaves Mountain View Plaza every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6:30 AM in the summer and as late as 9 AM in the winter. They usually break into short and long-ride groups ranging from 25 to 60 miles. Rides get progressively longer each ride-day. They always include a coffee stop at places like Beyond Bread or the popular A.J.’s. Once a month, there’s a 20 to 25 mile breakfast ride. Among the oldest club members are Jack and Libby Melville. “Our combined age is 166,” Jack muses. Libby had quintuple bypass surgery in March of 2013, but couldn’t wait to get back on a bike. Both started riding in 2000 after buying a tandem that now has almost 70,000 miles on it. “We ride around 175 miles a week,” says Jack. He’s ridden the 111-mile Tour de Tucson eight times and they’ve ridden their tandem that distance twice. Both agree that the most enjoyable aspect of the club is the sociability. Libby is also an advocate for a newer segment of the club, WOW (Women on Wheels). That group rides less than 20 miles on Tuesdays. The youngest of the 153-member club, Ted Goode, Jim Johnson, club president, invites riders of all levels, to join the Vistoso Cyclists’ fun. 51, lives in Tuscaloosa, AL, but has ties to SCOV because Johnson explains, “Even if people don’t want to ride, they his parents, Ed and Beverly, live here. “I had hip replacement surgery and had to find some exercise I could do. Beginning August 1 we are implementing changes to the ARC (Architectural Review Committee) submittal process. All submittals must be presented in person to the Community Services Coordinator the Tuesday prior to the ARC meeting. The homeowner or a designated representative must be available to meet in person with a member of the ARC prior to the meeting. If you will not be available, a form must be filled out along with your submittal to designate your representative and provide contact information. For your protection, we are strongly recommending that you or your designated representative be available during the construction process. Recently we have had projects not completed as planned and the homeowner has had to have work redone because the job was left unattended. Communication

Aluminum Can Donations: put those aluminum cans to work for SCOV. Deposit empty, rinsed aluminum cans in the box outside the Activity Center kitchen. For safety reasons, do not deposit unrinsed cans which can attract bees and may become a hazard. Profits fund the equipment for the Loan Room. Please continue to save your aluminum cans because this supports our Loan Room, providing a way to purchase new equipment as needed. In June, we delivered 400 pounds of aluminum cans, for which we received $236. This brings our year-to-date total receipts to $2,489.80 with a total of 4,220 pounds recycled. The Loan Room continues to be open Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8-9 AM throughout the summer. You will no longer be able to make telephone reservations until the Telephone Committee begins again in November, but you can always reserve the items you need by coming to the Loan Room. We have many items to loan, from medical items, to cots and rollaway beds, tables and chairs and some children’s items. Please feel free to visit us when we are open to see what we have. Look for their special work in the front center shop window. Randi is committed to never making the same thing twice. All of her unique pieces are comprised of genuine gemstone beads and quality elements such as Swarovski crystals and other glass beads. She has been creating her jewelry for about three years and truly enjoys the process. Don is becoming famous for his food-safe wooden bowls and platters that feature intricate designs he creates with different varieties of wood. When you actually touch and feel one of these bowls, you get an appreciation for the quality of his work and his meticulous attention to finish and detail. Recently, Don started making beautiful and durable segmented wooden bracelets.

The summer rains come, along with the wind, and we thank those in our community who keep a watchful eye out for their neighbors and report any damage to Administration. With so many of our neighbors away at this time of the year, we need to be especially aware of our surroundings. Please keep an eye out for those pesky weeds which seem to appear overnight with the monsoon season and remove them from your yard as soon as possible. Try to make every effort to stay ahead of the weed situation in your yard in the next few weeks. The project of painting the Weathered Brown color on utility boxes began a few years ago and is continuing this summer at no cost to the individual homeowner. If the boxes in your yard are surrounded by shrubs, they should be cleared away somewhat to make it easy for the painter or the utility company to gain access. We thank you for cooperating in keeping pride in your yard and our neighborhood, even in our extremely hot summer months. Posse

Staff Marketing Report for 2013-2014
The following is a staff report on efforts and results of staff’s work on the 2013-2014 Marketing Plan. The Marketing Plan is developed by the Marketing Committee with staff input. Staff has met bimonthly as a team to plan, review opportunities, address challenges and measure progress. Our team includes our General Manager, Bob Mariani; Assistant Manager, Robin Coulter; Controller, Randy Trenary; Golf Pro, Kim Griggs; Café Manager, Vince Hotz; Communications Coordinator, Chris Richard and Administrative Specialist, Kathy Peabody. Each of these individuals brings expertise to our efforts and work together well as a marketing team. The marketing budget for 2013-2014 was $59,000. A marketing budget is developed by assessing the success of previous campaigns. The campaigns are measured through several different mechanisms such as a unique phone number and reporting that will track how many times that number was called, counting the number of coupons turned in for a promotion or using the point of sale system to identify a promotion (i.e., Five to Free in the Café). The Marketing Committee’s Charter and the staff committee mission is to continue to evolve SCOV as an active adult community by designing marketing strategies that target the next generation of SCOV home buyers and by marketing SCOV as a community rich in the amenities desired by active adults seeking a healthy, dynamic lifestyle, includ-

ing a championship golf course, additionally, the goals are to promote our community to the Tucson area and beyond, for the express purpose of attracting new residents, new annual golf pass holders, enhancing property values and increasing Café revenues. Our Most Important Promises are for our three marketing initiatives: 1. Home Owners Association: a. Promote our community, stress location, convenient to retail, restaurants, healthcare and the arts b. Ideal size active adult community known for its excep tional friendliness, c. Breath-taking mountain and high desert views d. Healthy lifestyle II. Golf: A golfing experience that provides beauty, challenge and excellent conditions III. Café: Convenient community Café offering an enjoyable experience in breakfast, lunch, drinks and appetizers, special event dinners and Happy Hours. Goals were set for the homeowner’s association, golf course and café. Each goal had strategies and tactics for achieving that goal. Achievements this year include implementing the changes from the new Identity Manual developed by the Marketing Committee (new business cards, branding the Association vehicles, signage, etc.). We are in the process of trademarking logos and tag lines. As a result of the plan, our entire staff underwent a customer service training program. There has been an extensive advertising program for the HOA, golf course and café resulting in lead and revenue increases across the board. We are building dialogue and partnerships with the Town, chamber and local realtors through participating in chamber events, distributing SCOV information brochures at the Oro Valley Chamber of Commerce and staff meeting quarterly with the Town Manager, officials and staff. Two notable benchmarks include public golf revenue breaking $300k and The Café revenue breaking $600k. Not to rest on our laurels, staff has already begun executing the Marketing Committee’s 2014-2015 Marketing Plan and look forward to another good year. Programs/Facilities Director - Pam Sarpalius

I remember asking for Pickleball courts to be built when I first became employed by the Association. I was told “no one knows what that is, and no one will play.” I knew this game was becoming popular around the country. After a few years, courts were built, everyone took notice, started to play and now we are building more new courts. This is an example of how times change and staff meets new needs. Change is difficult for some people but in order to continue to have more people want to move into the community, changes are always going to be made. Think back and remember the old gym. Many now say I can’t believe how outdated, dark and small the old gym was. With all that said, when a change is made or something is added, realize that all changes benefit all of the residents in some way. Community Services - Katy Mosier

Food & Beverage Director - Vince Hotz I hope everyone is finding ways to beat the heat. Don’t forget to stop by The Café to try one of our new draft beers. We now have two tap beers, one is a rotating seasonal and the other is a rotating local. Another great thirst quencher is our Prickly Pear Lemonade. Also, Try our house-made meat pie. make sure to come by The Café to try our afternoon menu from 3-5 PM. We have had great response to our pastry and coffee special for $4. If you haven’t tried our house-made pastries, you’re missing out. This special is good seven days a week. In our effort to utilize whole foods and to make items from scratch, we have added an herb tower to The Café and we will be using it to produce herbs, fruits and vegetables. We are working with Native Seeds Search and others to grow organic and heirloom varieties whenever possible. Hope to see you at The Café soon. As everything is slowing down due to the hot weather, the Pro Shop staff is gearing up behind the scenes for another fun season. I will be ordering new range balls and scorecards. We will also be changing out the Shoe brushes around the golf shop. Stop by our fully-stocked golf shop to check out our closeout specials and our new summer hat supply. In stock golf shoes are 40% off through September while supplies last. Our current golf rate cards can also be picked up in the golf shop. Stop by and visit with our friendly staff. Remember that the monsoon season is upon us, and the rain brings lightning. Whenever you see lightning, please get indoors as quickly as possible. Lightning is nothing to fool around with (just ask Lee Trevino). Also, drink plenty of fluids and keep your body hydrated. Carrying a wet towel is also a great idea with the triple-digit temperatures that we are experiencing. Superintendent - Michael Kropf In previous years, August Tipster articles were often written to thank golfers for the patience and understanding during the regrassing of overseeded areas. This year the transition has been so good that only two areas on the grass were sprigged and most of the thin areas have enough underlying Bermuda grass that no repairs are required. The weak areas are being spot fertilized with high levels of nitrogen for rapid growth and spot watered to encourage healthy growth. However, this year the aprons overseeded around the front nine greens are very weak. These are difficult areas to repair because they are so close to the greens. Sprigging is not a very good option because sprigs require lots of water which creates very unplayable conditions. Sod is the most viable option, but this year the seed prices are so high, there isn’t really a budget for purchasing sod. The rye grass was chemically removed at the end of June, and that will show how bare the areas really are around the collars. Hopefully, enough Bermuda is present that the same mea-

sures can be taken as with the fairways: increased fertility and spot watering to encourage growth. If the areas end up being too large, then some sod will be used to repair them. With the combination of high humidity, rainfall and warm temperatures, the roughs are usually very thick in August. Normally, sprigging thins them out, but with very little sprigging this summer, they will be dense, so a growth regulator and aerification will be used to control the growth. Golf Advisory

August is a beautiful month to live in Arizona with the onset of monsoon rains. Our course is exceptionally impressive during this season. The fairway grass is filling in exceedingly well after sprigging just a few areas this year. In the chipping area, new fencing has been installed. On hole-17, the first grass bunker on the right side of the green, which was reconstructed in the spring, is now draining the correct way. Once again, the heat of mid-summer is upon us and fewer and fewer members are sticking around to play. The long, hot summer continues and the Men’s Nine Hole Club has independent play with a 7:30 AM shotgun start. Sign up in the Club Book located in the back of The Views Pro Shop. A great deal of work on the course is being performed this summer. Thanks to the efforts and financial support of Buster LaBrie and the Men’s 18 and 9-Hole Clubs and the Ladies 18 and 9 Hole Clubs, new fencing has been installed on the chipping range. It looks fabulous and will do a much better job of keeping golf balls from going into the desert or onto the first fairway. On Thursday, June 5th, Dave Johnson got a hole-in-one on #17 during Club play. Unfortunately, he did not purchase hole-in-one insurance, so no money will be heading his way. Want Additional Landscaping Beyond Your Property? SCOV has a program to do fire prevention landscaping on common areas behind many SCOV properties. This occurs on a schedule. However, if you would like landscaping to occur ahead of schedule or have additional work done on ASSOCIATION land, there is a process for doing that. It’s called the Pre-Qualified Landscaper Program. An application must be submitted and approved before any work can be done. Seasoned Cyclist Tells Tale of Lifesaving Helmet by Rich Bingle, Member, Vistoso Cyclists Club with Paul Mercer
Most of you know that cycling can be dangerous...that’s why we wear those funny-looking helmets. I was enjoying riding by myself in the bike lane on Thornydale Road at 18 mph. My front wheel hit a random chunk of asphalt, hidden in shadows, of the “safe” bike lane. My bike rolled right and I rolled left. Fortunately, I had just upgraded my older, expensive four-year-old helmet for a brand new expensive helmet four months ago. When I went down, my head bounced on the road. My new helmet fit perfectly and that was a good thing as I rolled over three times and hit my head twice, breaking the helmet in several places. I wondered “What the hell just happened?” As an older rider, I have health issues and one of those is eyesight and another of those is using a blood thinner. I have seen riders with perfect eyesight run into the back of a white pickup truck, and I have seen other members with blood thinners crash and face extensive injuries. I got scraped up from foot to hip, with what we call road rash, and was bleeding profusely. When the trauma doctor found that I was taking Plavix, he said, unscientifically, “that is bad stuff; it messes up everything.” I did not require stitches but lost a considerable amount of blood, and that made me dizzy and weak. This all earned me a spot in the UMC trauma center. And riding in an ambulance is no longer on my bucket list. This was my first spill in 30 years. I hope it doesn’t happen again. Here is what we know about helmets. There are major improvements made almost every year. Please do not try and save money on helmets. Buy a cheaper bike, hang on to those clothes another season, cut back on the beer money, but remember: buy the best helmet you can find. As of this writing, even the best helmet cannot protect you from concussion but it can help prevent skull fractures. If you ride bicycles, buy the best helmet and follow the fitting instructions exactly.

Take a bus to the ballgame. The bus leaves from behind the Welcome Center no later than 9:15 AM. Bus departs stadium one-half hour after the game ends. Seats are in the Diamond section of Chase Field and are wider, have better views, more leg room and include food service. Concession stands are nearby, and the stadium is domed and air-conditioned. American Red Cross Blood Drive People come in all different shapes, sizes and blood types. The vast majority of blood types fall into one of the major ABO groups. However, for a small percentage of the population, finding someone else with the same blood type can be as difficult as looking for a needle in a haystack. You could be that needle. The SCOV Emerge! Auxiliary wants to thank the many folks who have donated cell or smart phones. We are still looking for used phones with chargers. Phones will be set for 911 calls only and will be used exclusively by participants in cooperation with Emerge! Center for Abuse. Unused phones will be recycled and the money donated to Emerge! Donate Your Used Computer Ink Cartridges
Don’t throw away your used ink cartridges. Put them to good use by depositing them in a basket in the Welcome Center outside the Computer Learning Center. The Vistoso Computer Society delivers them to Coronado K-8 school‘s PTO (Parent Teachers Organization). The PTO recycles the cartridges to fund a multitude of projects. Your used ink cartridge donations are appreciated.
Veterans History Project In 2000, the United States Congress created the Veterans History Project within the Library of Congress. The VHP’s mission is to collect, preserve and make accessible the personal accounts of American veterans so future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand the realities of war. Among the many hikes featured for the summer months was one led by Clive Probert which included trails along Middlegate, the Sutherland Wash and the Deer Camp Trail. The hikers spotted a horned toad lizard pictured in this article. Many such creatures are only seen during the warmer seasons of the year which is a good reason to join a hike now. During August we continue to look forward to monsoon rains which change the landscape, dramatically greening up the desert and mountains. Additional benefits are the packed surfaces in the washes, as well as pools and flowing waters in the canyons. People are always asking, “Is Pilates good exercise for seniors?” The answer is definitely “Yes.” Group mat classes with professional instructors like ours make all the difference. Now that summer is here our classes are smaller and more personal. Often the dance bar is used for specific balancing exercises, and more strenuous routines are modified for those of us with limitations. We all agree that the following benefits for senior men and women can’t be beat: increased core strength (abdomen and back muscles), balance, flexibility, muscle tone, stamina and well-being. Poet Aimee Nezhukumathil answers the question that forms the title of her poem “Are All the Break-Ups in Your Poems Real?” by allowing the reader to see that the answer is a confounding yes and no. “If by real you mean as a shark tooth stuck in your heel, the wetness of a finished lollipop stick, the surprise of a thumbtack in your purse, then yes, every last page is true, every nuance...” However, she later interjects a “Wait” and goes on to state that “I have made them up, all of them, and when I say I am married, it means I married all of them, a whole neighborhood of past loves...” Thus the reader is led to believe that there is a reality buried within the invention and a foundation of truth that informs the poem without constraining the poet’s imagination. Poetry never requires strict adhesion to fact, yet poets rarely attempt to hide real feeling or honest opinion, proving perhaps that “yes and no” is the best answer to this question. Poker

Since Pet Beds has so much fabric and polyester scraps, we do not need any more at the present time. Everyone has been very generous for which we thank you. We could use larger pieces of fabric (at least 22” by 28”) for the outside pillow cases. Please mark these for Pet Beds.
