Clean and Green Tree Stewardship Gowanus Canal Conservancy has a Clean and Green program that meets on Saturdays and Sundays to steward trees and to build monthly compost windrows using 5,000 pounds of food scraps. On Sunday, September 20, 2015, Brooklyn Tech Key Club participated in the Clean and Green Tree Stewardship. To help the environment, we went around the Atlantic Avenue neighborhood and were given the task to pull unwanted weeds from the soil beds around the trees. This gets rid of weeds that would steal the tree’s nutrients. Also, due to cars, garbage, and people walking and stepping on the tree’s soil beds, the soil is compacted and water is unable to sink into the soil or reach the tree’s roots. In order for the tree to receive more water, we used gardening tools to loosen up the soil and move dirt around. At the end of the day, it was a fun and educational event. We even got pizza after a hard day of work! Kristy Tan Member Brooklyn Technical High School

Out of the Darkness Walk On Sunday, September 27, the Brooklyn Tech Key Club members attended the "Out of the Darkness" walk. This walk was to bring awareness and to help prevent suicide. This event was in Coney Island and the walk was from twelve in the afternoon to two, lasting two hours. The Key Clubbers were at the event to

help set up the snake and water stations and help give out refreshments to the walkers. Even though it looked as if very little people showed up for this walk, near the end, it turned out to be many people. Most of the walkers knew someone who is/was in depression and/or had committed suicide. The event had a lot of support from the walkers and the walkers were very enthusiastic about it, taking many pictures and holding up poster boards. Despite not participating for the walk itself, Key Clubbers were still doing their best to help out the walkers, and learned much information about suicide and depression. Key Clubbers also were able to hear of the many backgrounds of the walkers. Overall, the event was informative and meaningful to the Key Clubbers who attended, and the community. Youth Opportunity Fund The Youth Opportunities Fund (YOF) is an endowed fund for Key Club International held within the Kiwanis International Foundation.

YOF grants can help you take action. Look around and identify the things that need to get done in your school, community or world.
