Lieutenant Governor’s Farewell Hey Sharks! It has reached the time of the year for me to retire and say goodbye. I want to thank you guys for an amazing service year and I hope it gets better ever year. I

also want to thank my executive assistant who is also our LTG-Elect for all the help that he provided me. Another person I wanted to thank is Mr.Gioia, he’s the one that chose me and took me on an unforgettable journey. Beijing a Lieutenant Governor definitely improved my leadership, and time management skill, but it also changed the way I view the world because i am surrounded by innovative people like you.

Yours in service, Ruoxin Lin Lieutenant Governor New York District Key Club Division 9 Ruoxinlin.ltg@nydkc.org

Executive Assistant’s Farewell Ah, the service year passed as quickly as it came. I remember it was just yesterday that Clifford left and Ruoxin took office. And I remembered how honored I was to be chosen as her Executive Assistant. Although I do regret not interacting with much of the division, I enjoyed seeing all of you guys during events and divisionals. The division events, especially the ice skating fundraiser, were wonderful. I'm glad to have served as the EA for the division and I had a lot of fun working alongside Ruoxin! Even though I wasn't that active of an EA, I believe the position was a great stepping stone into my term as the next Lieutenant Governor. I plan to interact much more with all the members of this division and beyond. I hope we can all strive for another great service Yours in service, year! Firecracker Ceremony & Cultural Festival

On February 7th, Midwood Key Club worked with Hunter Key Club and Better Chinatown Society to

set up Sara D. Roosevelt Park for the Lunar New Year Firecracker Ceremony. This was the first year that New York City kids were off for the Chinese New Year, which opened up new opportunities and gave us more time to volunteer. In order to prepare for the ceremony, we set up tents with chairs and tables, which would serve as booths for sponsors such as McDonald's and Delta. During the ceremony, some of us worked the booths while others walked dressed as popular mascots like Minnie Mouse and Elmo to interact with the children in the crowd to create an exciting experience for everyone. Towards the end of the festival, which showcased lion dances, traditional Chinese vvvcvperformances, and a children's choir, the volunteers twisted their poppers and someone lit the strands of firecrackers so that everything went off all at once. It was very loud but also exciting at the same time, and I hope our club gets to participate in the event again next year. -Najah Thurston Midwood High School Key Club Vice President

Chinatown Parade & Festival

Chinatown Parade & Festival

The Lunar Year Parade was cruel to my limbs. It was hosted in Chinatown, Manhattan (Hester

Street & Mott Street), from 9am-4pm. The weather was harsh, icy winds and a cold temperature that touched hands with the negatives. I felt as if we were tossed around like rag dolls, people in charge unsure of where to place us to make efficient use of our slowly dying bodies. We stood around, admired cars, played with spin wheels, and nearly froze to death. What a pleasurable experience. And as soon as we had all agreed to leave, we were denied the gates to freedom. Finally, after an hour or so of waiting, we got to do something: stand and pass out flags and roses to passersby while the parade was going on. Kelly was chosen to become a mascot (Minnie Mouse) and I had escorted her throughout the entire parade. This I consider the best moment of the day as the pain of being cold faded away from my body. The warning to dress in layers was not enough.

Brooklyn Lantern Festival

Brooklyn Lantern Festival

Brooklyn Lantern Festival

On February 28th, Key Club members from Divisions 9 and 11 took part in the Better

Chinatown Lantern Festival. This event took place in Brooklyn along 8th Avenue, between 53rd and 55th St from 11:30 AM to 3:30 PM. Volunteers arrived at the location at around 8:30 AM and helped the organizers set up booths, carry supplies, make lanterns, and work the booths. At this event, Key Clubbers were able to immerse themselves in the celebration of Chinese New Year while enjoying cultural music and helping out the community.

Brooklyn Lantern Festival

The 2016 Chinese Lunar New Year Parade was a very spectacular event. Complete with floats, lanterns and red envelopes, celebrating Chinese New Year by viewing this event must be a wonderful experience Volunteering to make this event possible is much more than seeing it in action. From my experience as a volunteer for the parade, it was an amazing event unlike any others. Growing up in the asian american community I had always seen the parades year after year. Finally being in it after all these years has made me realize just how much work is required to make the parade happen. From hauling boxes of materials to being a mascot every bit of effort helped us make this parade happen. Even with all the work we had to do I would do it all over again as many times as possible if it wasn't so cold. Seriously, it was cold that day. Besides the weather I wouldn't change anything. -Kira Li Member of Brooklyn Technical High School Key Club
