Lieutenant Governor’s Greeting Hello Division 9! I am honored and beyond excited to serve as your 2015-2016 Lieutenant Governor. With all the energy and enthusiasm I saw at the 67th Annual Leadership Training Conference, I could tell that this year is going to be an extraordinary year! My goals for this service year are to increase membership and strengthen unity both inside as well as outside of our division. In order to accomplish these goals we need to bond together. One might ask how do you create bond without “chemistry?” Well, throughout my service year I hope to plan board member meetings for officers to share leadership skills as well as ideas for events. Additionally, I would like to add more divisional events that Key Club members can attend. To conclude, I would like to congratulate our division in its achievements and thank all immediate past officers for their hard work! Let us keep up the good work, and strive for another year of greatness. Yours in service, Ruoxin Lin Lieutenant Governor New York District Key Club Division 9 Ruoxinlin.ltg@nydkc.org

Service Year Flashback “My service year as Treasurer of Brooklyn Tech Key Club has been an enriching experience. Before I became an executive, I did not realize how much I would learn from my fellow board, home members, and other Key Club members from around the division and state. I've developed leadership and communication skills that I couldn't have gained anywhere else. Being Treasurer has brought my attention to how much change that us, students, can bring to this world. I am proud of my club for raising money for UNICEF, Ronald McDonald House, and Pennies for Patients. As Treasurer, I had the opportunity to advocate the causes that we were to fundraise for. My experience this year has been awesome, and I've met many new friends along the way. I hope to be involved in Key Club by contributing in even the smallest way after I graduate.”

67 Annual Leadership Training Conference (LTC) [Continued] “At first I was quite skeptical on how this conference would impact me as a person, and on my decidable mind. Little did I know, this conference had taught me how to make precise and better decisions. Growing up and still growing, I never really had a solid answer to many choices that was given to me. When I was chosen to be one of the two delegates and vote for the candidates, I represented the decisions of the members of division 9. This gave me an experience on how decision-making can affect others. Long story short, I am grateful to have gone to LTC, this conference has definitely improved my leadership skill.”

Pillow Fight Clean Up

Pillow Fight Clean Up [Continued] “You better hold on to your Tiara girl, or it’s coming right off!” Said a guy swinging his pillow. “Oh yeah? I don’t think so!” Pushing her tiara up, and said “Tiara! Stay on!” As you can see, the pillow fight can get a little crazy sometimes. You can hear people challenging each other to a pillow fight duel or going around with “gentle taps, gentle taps.” Despite the fun, the main goal of the pillow fight is to donate the remaining pillows to homeless shelters. However, after the fight, feathers were everywhere, on the grass, the trees or making their way to land on someone’s head. But thanks to our kind Key Clubbers the park was soon feather free. Ruoxin Lin Lieutenant Governor of Division 9

Cemetery Clean Up

Cemetery Clean Up [Continued] “It was a pleasure to help and give back to the community by cleaning up the Historic New Utrecht Cemetery. Earth Day was right around the corner and I thought this was the perfect opportunity to help the environment. At first cleaning the cemetery sounded weird but it actually was very fun. I met new friends and reconnected with old ones. I live near the cemetery but I never thought about its history until I helped clean up the cemetery. I would like to continue cleaning up the cemetery whenever I can.” Sally Li Key Club Member Edward R. Murrow High School

Re-Boxing Event

Re-Boxing Event Sort, Pack, Ship “Helping kids in Africa is easy as 1, 2, 3. On a sizzling 80°F day in Brooklyn, Key Clubbers sorted donations (mainly soccer T-shirts and cleats), and packed them in boxes for shipping to multiple destinations in Africa. We packed over 70 boxes and arranged them in a storage facility, ready to be sent at any moment. The organizer of this event told us that kids are not able to play soccer because the only clothes they own are their school uniforms and they cannot risk getting them dirty or ripped. He told us of another story in which a girl accidentally ripped her uniform by getting it caught on a branch. As a consequence, her mother made her sleep outside for a week. Aside from the burning sun, we all felt like we were doing extremely meaningful stuff. We felt accomplished after hauling boxes for three hours. Jasper Tangchitsumran As a reward for our hard work, the organizer took us to a wonderful pizzeria Bulletin Editor in Brooklyn. I would do this event again without a doubt. Everyone worked Brooklyn Technical High School efficiently with each other and everyone had a great sense of humor.”

Chili On Wheels

Chili On Wheels “On Saturday April 25th, members met in Union Square Park and got to work right away. We split up into two groups and hit the streets. We walked around and asked homeless people if they would like some chili, although some did not want most said yes with a big smile on their face, they thanked us and said we were doing such a great act. It was nice having conversations with some of them, there was someone in particular who really brought to my attention how important it is what we were doing. As we gave him chili he told us his name and told us to search him up, at first I was a little awkward, but I did. His name is Saravuth Inn. Once I got home I looked at what had come up, it was a video that told his story, it was really moving. These people all have stories behind them, whatever it may be. They need help to overcome homelessness. I know we will be participating with Chili’s on Wheels in many more Saturdays to come. It is heart warming knowing that Key Club can work together to help those in our community, It is definitely something I will do any day, in whatever it may be.”
