DIR. BEBOT MELGAR

Yolanda A. Montifar President Reynaldo “Rey” Bongao Secretary Restituto V. Ramos Editor-In-Chief All Active Rotarians Contributors

The Golden Key was adapted in honor of St. Peter, the patron saint of San Pedro, who is believed to be holding the key to heaven. It is also in recognition at the club’s pioneering effort as the first club in San Pedro, to open the portals of Rotary International to female members. RCSPS was the “key” for the active partnership of both genders in working for the achievement of all the Rotary Objectives. The Golden Key accepts comments, suggestion and contributions from all active Rotarians. RI President—KALYAN BANERJEE June 2012 My dear brothers and sisters in Rotary, June is a time to reflect on the Rotary year that has nearly passed, and to look forward to the one that is soon to begin. We look back at what we have accomplished and measure our progress toward the goals we have set for ourselves. In Rotary, we may pause to reflect, but never to rest on our laurels – for as much as we have achieved, we are always aware of how much there is still to do. The 2011-12 year has been a time of significant progress. Binota and I have been fortunate to have visited different parts of the Rotary world and seen the many ways that Rotarians everywhere Reach Within to Embrace Humanity. In South Sudan, we met with Rotarians who are determined to make a difference despite tremendous challenges. The humanitarian problems in that nation are enormous, and begin with the most basic: At the moment, South Sudan lacks a single functional hospital. I am confident that in the coming year, Rotarians around the world will reach out to our newest Rotary country with the support and help it will need. In Uganda, I was delighted and heartened to discover how many government ministers and officials are Rotarians, and to see them bringing the ideals of Rotary to life in their service. In Kathmandu, I was overwhelmed as countries of South Asia – Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka – came together to vow to make the region 100 percent literate by 2017. In Fiji and Vanuatu in the South Pacific, I was moved by Rotarians who are helping to lower child mortality and provide safe housing. In Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, I was delighted by the statement of Sheikh Nahayan Mubarak Al-Nahayan, minister of higher education and scientific research: “We are looking forward eagerly to Rotary starting its first club here.” And in Valdivia, Chile, as close to the South Pole as Binota and I have been, we were moved by Rotarians’ work with children who have mental disabilities. But most of all, we found our hearts warmed by the welcome we received all over the world – and by the sight of so many Rotarians living the Rotary ideal, and choosing to Reach Within to Embrace Humanity. I thank you for the opportunity to serve as your president, and look forward to working together to build Peace Through Service.

KALYAN BANERJEE

President’s Message.com Good day Fellow Rotarians! This is it...the moment has come for me to handover the leadership to Peacebuilder President Rey... likewise, whether he likes it or not, he has to accept also the responsibilities, accountabilities, and all the "i-ties" of the Club. But before I finally step-down, let me express my utmost gratitude to all of you...from day 1 of RY2011-2012 - the new ones like Rtns. Clemence and Rosa after their induction have shown their enthusiasm and interest in this prestigious organization by getting involved in most of the activities in the latter part of Rotary Year. Rtn. Rosa has not yet attended any District activity and yet she attended already RI Convention in Bangkok. Some members due to reasons beyond their control, have helped half-way of the year...but four members helped and supported me all throughout the Embracing Year. To all of you, in behalf of my family, MARAMING- MARAMING SALAMAT PO from the bottom of my heart! I hope PB Pres. Rey will accept also this unsolicited advice..."You may not get much out of any one person, but your connectedness to the members is going to help push you forward in doing "PEACE through SERVICE." Expect our 100% support - mapa District or mapa International man. For the Embracing Year, i am pleased to report to you that we're able to accomplished 62 projects that the District accepted and approved - this time, I would like to thank Prudence for doing the website reporting - (please refer to the tarp on the wall and page for the list of projects done in Embracing Rotary Year). Thank you and Godbless us all!!! All the way in Rotary Service, EP Yolly

Dear Peacebuilder presidents and Rotarians, The coming RY is very important for Rotary for it is the last year before all Rotary districts in the whole world shift to the Future Vision Plan (FVP). It is imperative also that all clubs be informed of what is going to happen, what are we supposed to do and what are we supposed to know, thus the need for the 7 Rotarians from your respective clubs to attend the TRF Seminar on July 7. If you all remember that I announced during the PETS that all clubs need to be qualified as TRF rolls out the FVP. I would like to make it clear that this TRF Seminar is "NOT" the Grants Management Seminar the district is required to do this coming RY. This is just one of the many trainings we need to do for us to have a hassle free shift to FVP. During the Business meeting in Dusit, PDG Onye (as incoming DRFCC in RY 13-14) proposed a resolution for the club qualification requirement, which includes the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) which the club leaders need to sign, as a basic requirement of TRF. I was hoping that we had more questions on that resolution during the meeting. Sadly,

nobody asked anything about it. I also

believe the approved resolution has been sent out to all clubs by PDG Onye and the Embracing presidents have discussed it in your regular

meeting. If you have not done so, please do it before your

year ends. This is one act that you need to do before you leave office. We all look forward for all the clubs to be represented in the coming TRF Seminar with all 7 Rotarians listed below in tow. The host club, RC Los Banos will be in touch with you for the Seminar details. Program will be sent to the egroup soon. At this juncture, I would like to congratulate the Embracing Presidents for a great year and we look forward to see the Peacebuilder Presidents start their year full of enthusiasm.

Yours in Rotary Service, Michael E. Lirio, CPA Regional Foundation Alumni Coordinator, Zone 7A, RY 2010-13 Centennial District Governor, RY 2004-05 Rotary International District 3820

What Makes Polio an Emergency? On the 25th of May, the World Health Assembly declared polio a programmatic emergency for global public health. The Global Poverty Project interviewed Bruce Aylward, assistant directorgeneral at the World Health Organization (WHO) Why now?

Bruce Aylward addressing Rotarians at the 2012 RI Convention in Bangkok, Thailand. Rotary Images

Three things were driving the ministers of health of the world in declaring polio an emergency: first – on a positive note – polio eradication has reached a tipping point. India, the country that was responsible for almost half the world’s cases just two years ago, has now passed an entire year without reporting a case, providing incontrovertible evidence that polio can be eradicated anywhere.

However, and this is the ministers’ second point, polio cases unexpectedly – and alarmingly – surged late last year in the three remaining endemic countries, from where it would undoubtedly make a global comeback unless it is completely eradicated. And third, the ministers saw further evidence that when polio spreads to polio-free places, it is increasingly deadly. In Tajikistan and Congo in 2010, and in China in 2011, polio paralyzed adults as well as children in these outbreaks with high fatality rates among the adults, reaching nearly 50 percent in some of these places. This is on top of other research that has recently shown that if we let this opportunity slip through our fingers, we will soon be seeing more than 200,000 children again being paralyzed by polio each year. That’s not just a number, that’s children’s lives changed forever. Many of them would die. If there was a tsunami coming, with 200,000 children in its path, we would do everything we could to get the children out of harm’s way. How can ordinary people help? The first thing you can do is to sign the petition on the Global Poverty Project’s website to let world leaders know that you want them to make good on their promises to get polio finished. Presidents and prime ministers are, after all, answerable to their constituents. Follow End Polio Now on Twitter and Facebook to find out about other simple actions you can take. Then, if you want to get further involved, you can join your local Rotary club. RI is a fantastic organization – it was a couple of Rotarians that started the whole global movement to eradicate polio and they continue to campaign, raise money and volunteer in polio-infected countries today. You can also donate to Rotary’s PolioPlus Fund. You can make a difference. It is everyone’s responsibility to see polio eradicated. Once we do, we will have achieved something extraordinary for all the world’s children forever. Rotary International -- June 7, 2012
